Background :
Aaron James Flanigan is the only child of Fleet Admiral Robinton Flanigan and Rear Admiral Janice Flanigan-Riley. During his childhood he had often wished for a brother and/or sister but his mother time and again told her that their busy work-schedule didn't allow for more children. Only when he graduated from highschool in tactical training and applied for starfleet academy, did he learn that his own conceiving had been trouble enough for his parents. They had, like him, yearned for more children but his mother was unable to beget more.
Learning this inspired him to go into counseling, much to his parent's dismay who had rather seen him put his tactical knowledge to good use. Being the only child of a flag-officer's couple never was easy on James, as he was always reminded during his teen years at how well his parents had been at their studies. James was a hard worker during his school and academy years, but he never seemed to be able to live up to this father's expectations.
Yet, during his academy years he grew very close to one of his fellow students, who eventually admitted to being in love. James had never been so surprised in his life, though he didn't quite know what to think of this. His parents had firmly imprinted the notion of a wife and family in his mind, he had never thought about other options. However, gradually James had come to terms with his friend's feelings and eventually even started returning the small affections. A year later, at age 22, James and his friend Tony Adams were married.
This action further alienated James from his beloved parents, but as counselor James believed that eventually they would come to terms with it. Tony appealed to James about his child wish, and eventually James consented to having a woman carry their child to term. The woman delivered two healthy girls, and the couple's happiness couldn't have been better. Tony and James Flanigan (for Tony had taken on James' last name) moved to Darwin to raise their daughters, while James took up a position as junior counselor on the USS Comet, which patrolled the Sol system.
Just before James' 26th birthday, disaster struck when their family home was subject to arsony, killing Tony and one of the 3-year old twin girls. The other girl had been out to a friend that evening, thus escaping the fire. James immediately returned home, grieving for his husband and daughter. His daughter Jamey and Tony himself were buried in the Flanigan family grave, which was consented by James' parents.
James moved back to live with his parents, taking his daughter Antoinette with him. His parents did everything they could to console their heart-broken son, and eventually James started seeing the good things of life again, and even started taking up his job as counselor again. Never again did he answer the advances of prospect suitors (both male and female), and he lived only to work towards living up to his parent's expectations, and the happiness of his surviving daughter.
After barely surviving a brief tour as first officer on the Tiger Shark, James and his daughter moved back to Starbase Assaillant. A few months later, James receives orders to report to the Black Tulip to serve as counselor. Naturally, his daughter Antoinette moves with him.

Commendations
(to be filled in)
Reprimands
Commander James Flanigan has a spotless Starfleet record.
Medical Record
James suffers from an uncanny fear of large open fires and he will withdraw into himself if he gets close to open fire. He still suffers nightmares from the fire that killed his husband and daughter, though he has never openly or comfortably spoken to anyone but the USS Comet CMO and counselor about the incident.
During an away mission with Rear Admiral Keztrek, while assigned to the Tiger Shark, James was severely injured after their shuttlecraft had crashed. His injuries were further compromised when a pack of wolves attacked both him and Keztrek. He fully recovered, though he still suffers from a slight limp, especially when he is exhausted or severely stressed.
Stardate 2384.0402, recorded by Doctor Sevel, CMO USS Comet
Ensign Flanigan has suffered severe trauma upon learning about the death of his spouse and child. It is recommended that the ensign is released from his duties for now to deal with his loss, though I would recommend that he does not do so alone. His parents have been contacted, and it is recommended that he and his surviving child stay with them to complete the mourning term.
Interests
abseiling, cooking, astronomy
Additional Notes
Due to him being the child of two flag officers, he hasn't had an easy youth. He's a perfectionist and as a consequence can be hard to work with. In addition he doesn't make easy contact with fellow officers and is a little hard to get along with until one gets to know him.
stardate 2384.0330 - Lost his husband Tony Adams and their daughter Jamey as their house was subjected to arsony. The arsonist was caught and sentenced to the mines of Rura Penthe. James eventually learned that the arsonist was killed while in transit to Rura Penthe.
In 2392, James learned that he was promoted to first officer of the USS Tigershark, to where he moved taking his 11-year old daughter with him, against his parent's wishes. His parents appied for custody of the child, but James wouldn't hear of it, and the child wished to remain with her father.
