Jason walked along the Promenade, looking for some diversionary activity. There didnt seem to be many Cadets around the Starbase currently, so Jason felt slightly lonely.
He wandered along, but for some reason, nothing seemed to quite appeal to him. He found himself at the very end of the Promenade. It was almost devoid of people down here. But then he caught a wiff of what smelled like freshly-baked bread. It was coming from a little shop at the very end, "Tante Maria's Bakery." He walked in.
Behind the counter was an Andorian woman, who was just pulling something out of the oven. As he walked over, she put it down and noticed him.
Maria: Ah, a customer! Welcome to my Bakery. They call me Tante Maria.
Jason: Jason Black. Tante Maria? How did an Andorian end up with a Terran name like that?
Maria: People coming in here said it sounded like that, so I have chosen to keep it. Plus no one could pronounce my Andorian.
Jason sat down at the nearest table. She came over with a tray of assorted baked goods.
Maria: Now, what would you like?
Jason took an eclair from the tray and began eating it.
Jason: Mmmm, this is excellent.
Maria: Good. I hope you dont mind the temperature in here. The oven makes it warmer, and my husband and I prefer it that way.
Jason: Oh, its fine. I am from a rather warm part of Earth, the American Southwest. Very hot and very dry.
An Andorian male walked out from the back
Maria: And speaking of my husband, here he is. His real name is Mehyatkumthn, but since few here can pronounce it. So they call him Uncle Max.
Max: Welcome to our little bakery.
Jason: Pleasure to be here.
Max: So what brings you to Starbase Conquerer? You're wearing a Cadet's uniform so I assume the Academy. By the color, either Science or Medical.
Jason: Medical. I'm training to be a Chief Medical Officer.
Max: Excellent choose. The Section always need them. Did you just arrive?
Jason: About half an hour ago.
Max: And you already found your way here. You certainly have excellent taste, my boy. Excellent taste.
Jason smiled. He was liking these two already.

The morning had been busy. Busy and productive.
Xin-Ling had made plans to meet her friend, Dr. Barbara Johnson, councilor for the USS Hepta, for dinner later that evening, but there was still much to track down – and purchase, as long as her credits would last – before their appointment together for dinner later that evening.
She had purchased several new Ti Chi uniforms for her workouts aboard the Hepta and in the gymnasiums of Starbase Conqueror.
Hunger summoned her from her pleasurable pastime to Decks 24 through 26, where the majority of the dining establishments of SB Conqueror were located.
Thinking at first to find her meal at the Heather on the Hill, where she, Barbara, and TJ often ate while on Conqueror, she bypassed it this time to explore other culinary treats that might be waiting at the other businesses. Ah, where to go? she thought.
She noticed Chu Hsiu-P’ang, the gardener for The Starquake, as he rushed by on his way to Deck 25, and nodded a greeting to him.
Further down the Promenade’s Deck 24, she caught sight of her goal, Tante Maria’s Bakery, and picked up her pace. She would eat quickly, then return to shopping before meeting Barbara later.
Xin-Ling entered the bakery and greeted Maria, who was standing by the counter.
"Hello, Tante. You have maybe fresh char sui bao for me now?" asked the petite Asian.
"Always, for you, Xin-Ling," the Andorian answered. "Will that be all?" she asked as she retrieved the large, white, steaming bun from the counter.
"Yes, that is all."
The Asian noticed Uncle Max standing at a table conversing with a young man with light brown hair who was sitting there enjoying one of the éclairs that Tante Maria’s was famous for. The man seated at the table looked to be in his mid-twenties, and his uniform identified him as one of the new cadets at SB Conqueror.
She had wanted to just get something to eat and hurry back to visit the various retailers of Conqueror, but something intrigued her about the newcomer to the starbase, and she wanted to meet him.
"On second thought," Xin-Ling said to Maria, "Maybe you bring a coffee over near this young man’s table; <Xin-Ling indicates Cadet Black> I eat there, okay?"
The Andorian smiled and nodded her agreement, and Xin-Ling made her way toward the cadet.
"Hello," she greeted him, smiling and extending her hand. "My name Xin-Ling Chan, assistant security chief of USS Hepta. May I sit here with you?"
<Cadet Black>
"I not see you here before," Xin-Ling asked to open a conversational flow. "You are new to Starbase Conqueror?"

Jason stood and clasped her hand.
Xin-Ling: I not see you here before, You are new to Starbase Conqueror?
Jason: Indeed I am. Jason Black, Medical Cadet. But my friends call me Jase. I am very new, in fact. I arrived at the Starbase less than an hour ago.
Xin-Ling: Welcome to Starbase Conquerer, Cadet Black. You get here well?
Jason: I did. The temperature in the transport I arrived in was a little cool for my taste. But when you're from the deserts of Arizona, just about everything seems cooler. It was a little to crowded for my preference as well. But then, I'm used to very wide open spaces. You are from Asia, I see. I spent a summer in China when I was 18. Beautiful landscape, in the rural areas.

For a portion of her life, she had lived in the New Territories of Hong Kong, and so was familiar with the beauty of the countryside.
"You say you from Arizona desert. Then you are familiar with beautiful sunsets, and, if you go out of city, fabulous night skies?"
"Oh, yes," answered Jason. "Very familiar."
"I spend time a few years back in Gobi Desert. Every night, sky is like artist's canvas; night sky inspire awe."
Tante Maria came to the table with Xin-Ling's coffee, then, seeing the two involved in conversation, left the table again. Uncle Max had left the service area to work in the kitchen. The Asian girl picked up her char siu bao and tore the baking paper off its bottom. Passing it under her nose, she inhaled the aroma of the freshly-baked bun and closed her eyes in satisfaction before taking her first bite. She blew on her coffee and took a sip, placed the mug on the table once more, and turned her attention back to the young cadet.
"Have you receive your ship assignment yet?" she asked.OOC ...

Trenia placed the sword down next to her bag and took out a towel and swiped her face with it. Then she walked over to the wall and placed her weapon back up on one of the hooks. She felt her stomach rumbling and began to wonder how long it was since she’d had anything to eat. She placed her towel back in her bag.
“Computer end program,” she requested. Her gym like surrounds disappeared revealing the normal holodeck walls. She walked over to the door and had a craving for one those pies that are made at ‘Tanta Maria’s Bakery’. She had never really eaten pasties and pies until she was assigned here and now she had one fairly often when she was on the station.
She headed onto the promenade towards the bakery. She could smell the bread being cooked and seems to attract her more to the shop. She walked in.
“Hello Trenia,” said Uncle Max, who had quickly come to know her since she was posted here. Max headed into the kitchen. Trenia waited while Tanta severed two customers at the table.
“May I have a steak and kidney pie,” she requested.
“Sure, I’ll bring it over in a minute,” she said as she head back towards the counter. Trenia walked over to the two officers.
“May I join you?” she asked.

Xin-Ling: Have you receive your ship assignment yet?
Jason: Not yet. I requested the Hepta, but have not recieved my Assignment from Command yet.
Xin-Ling: You will like it there. Jordan Mackler a good Doctor and Instructor.
Jason: So I've heard.
Jason turned his head and saw a female Trill in a Command Uniform coming over to them.
"May I join you?"
Jason: Of course, Commander. Have a seat.
She seated herself and he extended his hand.
Jason: Jason Black, Medical Cadet.

Actually since in this cause Tante is French, Uncle would become Oncle.
But lets not get complicated.

“Welcome to starbase conqueror,” responded Trenia, “Trenia Torban, Navigation instructor on the Hepta.”
She placed her bag down next to the seat.
“Are looking forward to your assignment?” asked Trenia as Tanta Maria came over carrying Trenia pie. She placed it down on the table.
“Thankyou,” Trenia said as she tucked into her pie.
“Would anyone like anything else?” asked Tanta Maria.

“Would anyone like anything else?” asked Tanta Maria. Xin-Ling set down her coffee and began thinking how delicious one more char siu bao would taste. "Maybe one more teacake like you just get me at counter?" she answered Tante Maria.
"Jason, you maybe like something else? My treat, since you new on base," the Asian smiled.

Jason: Thank you, Xin-Ling. Maria, do you know of Bavarian Chocolate Cream?
Maria: I do in fact. Theres a Lt over in Engineering that loves it, so I keep it in stock.
Jason: Excellent. Could you do an eclair topped with it?
Maria: I sure could. I'll get right to it.
Jason: Could you make that three?
Maria: Certainly.
She walked back to the kitchen.
Jason: In answer to your question Trenia, yes I am. The idea of practicing medicine out in the vastness of Space excites me. I am very much looking to it.
Maria returned from the kitchen. She carried the Bavarian-topped eclairs on a tray. She placed it on the table
Maria: Here you are, Jason.
He took one and took a bite out of it.
Jason: Mmmm, this is excellent. Thank you, Maria. ::he turned to Trenia and Xin-Ling:: Either of you want one?

"No," responded the petite Asian with a smile. Char siu bao here pretty big size. This enough for me." Tearing off the baking paper again from the base of the teacake, she began working on the steaming white bun.

“Yes, I would like one,” she responded as she finished her pie. Then she picked up one from the tray. She had never had Bavarian Chocolate Cream before in her five lives, but she was always up for trying new things. She picked up the chocolate cream from the table and took a bit.
“This is delicious,” she commented to Jason, who had also picked one of the chocolate creams. He smiled back and Trenia took another bit out of the chocolate cream.
“What made you join Starfleet?” she asked Jason.

"My brother Mark, who is 10 years older than me, is also in Starfleet. I've always been the kind to look for a challenge, and Mark said that a Starship is one of the most challenging places to practice Medicine."
"As you well know, a Starship Doctor deals with Engineering accidents, Plasma Burns, previously unknown ailments, neurological damage; a huge challenge. Thats the kind of challange I want."

Time was slipping away.
There not being any takers for the holosuite adventure he was considering, and with the arrival of the USS Hanson back into Starbase Conqueror, he thought it best to prepare for being summoned back to duty on his own ship. Having heard that Captain ONE was unavailable for this training mission coming up so soon, he wondered who would be filling in for him.
There was a little packing to do, but once that was done, he could move into his new quarters aboard the Hepta for his initial cruise as its First Officer.
First, however, urgent necessity was calling. It was getting late, his stomach was growling, and the "restaurant sector" of the starbase was beginning to sound very good.
Within the space of thirty minutes, he caught sight of Heather on the Hill, one of his favorite restaurants on the Conqueror. Not understanding why, he passed on by, and walked toward Tante Maria's Bakery, singing as he went, listeners again swearing they could hear the Tuatha de Danaan providing the ancient musical accompaniment to the Irishman's voice. It was if their ears had been touched by the Lehaunn Sidhe herself.<There is an MP3 using a similar voice to what I envision as TJ's. If you would like to hear TJ's approach to Tante Maria's Bakery, then click here: www.celticmusic.org/Songs_Of_Ireland.shtml?source=Overture&OVRAW=Irish%20song&OVKEY=irish%20song&OVMTC=standard and select "An Irish Lullaby" (located about half-way down the page on the left)>

“I joined Starfleet because I loved to fly ships and what better than a starship to fly,” Trenia responded thinking back, “My parent didn’t agree with my decision they wanted me to a politician or lawyer, but I enjoy the adrenalin rush of flying and I also never did what my parent’s said.”
“I’d been flying small old ship with my neighbour and his sons since I was young behind my parent’s back,” she continued, “Me and my mother haven’t spoken since I left the academy.”
She finished of her chocolate cream. Trenia heard someone singing and looked to the door of the shop to see TJ walking in.
“But it was one of the best decisions I have made,” Trenia concluded.
“Is Mark a medic?” she asked.

Jason looked over and saw a Officer in a Command uniform coming up to them
"May I join you?"
Jason: Certainly, Commander. Have a seat.
He seated himself, and Jason extended his hand.
Jason: Jason Black, Medical Cadet.

As his song neared completion, TJ entered the bakery and saw the three sitting at the table: Xin-Ling, Trenia, and a new cadet. He made his way toward them.
The Irishman took the hand of the young cadet, shaking it firmly.
"Ten thousand welcomes t' ye, cadet; but let me be startin' right off by sayin' that until we're officially on our mission on th' Hepta, 'tis TJ I am." He smiled, and there was something infectious about that smile; perhaps his flashing eyes relayed the friendliness to those who were nearby. It was difficult to analyze.
His attention moved next to Commander Torban, greeting her, then to his close friend, Xin-Ling, who only momentarily took her attention from the teacake she was devouring to briefly acknowledge her friend.
Tante Maria came to the table and asked, "Welcome, Commander; may we get you something?"
"'Tis certain I am that ye can," TJ responded. "I've been hearin' o' some wondrous éclairs ye be servin' here, an' am wonderin' if I could sample a couple?"

Zhuk had reported in, and finally settled in. His quarters were spars, but of course he was a fresh cadet instead of the Commander he was used to being. Then again he had reminded himself that he had been alot worse off on many of his field missions with his soldiers. Sparse quarters on a Starbase beat being out in the elements any time on any world. Being on a Starbase also had the added bonus of access to a variety of good interplanetary food.
It was a chore getting to the Promenade decks, where most of the eating establishments were. Zhuk was busy side-stepping cadets that had just arrived from a training mission aboard the USS Hanson. If he remembered correctly, his training was to commence on board the USS Hope. The status of the USS Hepta was unknown to him. She was docked upon his arrival.
The marine training was a new venture for this section of Starfleet. Zhuk was hoping that it wasn't so new to cause any uneccessary delays due to logisitics. 'Ahh, logistics!', Zhuk was thinking, remembering his many deployments that became a "Hurry Up And Wait Mission".
Zhukarak had finally made it through the the Promenade of deck 24 when something blue caught his eye. Sure enough, it was an Andorian female in one of the establishments. He watched for a few minutes, always the observant one. It seemed that she was the proprieter of what's called Tante Maria's Bakery, as she was serving three officers and a cadet. They seemed to be idly talking while enjoying a variety of foods. An Andorian male was also present.
As his stomache was becoming anxious for some sustenance, Zhuk decided that the food couldn't be bad if Andorians were serving. He really wasn't ready to be social. On his way to a lone table he did his obligatory and respectful "Sir! Mam!" to the officers.
'Will I make it to this table?'.......thinking he will.

Jordan suddenly woke out of her nightmare, sweat covering her. She scanned the room quickly and saw that there was no one there but Draco, who had recovered from his injury and was curiously flying around the room. He sensed she was awake and flew over to her. He chirped inquiringly. Jordan: I'm fine Draco. Just a little frazzled from everythin' that's been happenin'. I see you're feelin' better. That's good. Now I want ya to stay here while I quickly take a shower and alert me if anyone comes in. Got it? Draco took to the air and hid in a corner where he could watch the door and the whole room. Jordan smiled and went into the bathroom to take a shower. When she came back out, Draco said that nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Jordan: I need to see some familiar faces. Let's find TJ. Computer, locate Commander Edwards. Computer: Commander Edwards is at Tante Mama's Bakery. Jordan had remembered seeing the little bakery on her explorations and smiled. They took off for the bakery and were there in about 10 minutes. She entered the room and went up to the counter. Jordan: Entschuldigung. Kann ich ein Kuch haben? <please tell me that my German's right. I haven't taken it in over a year>The andorian woman turned around confused and then Jordan laughed and shook her head. Jordan: Sorry, I thought Tante was German. Do you have any chocolate chip cookies? Tante: Certainly. How many? Jordan: How big are they? Tante went back and brought one out. Jordan's eyebrows lifted a bit then her mouth started to water as she smelled them. Jordan: I'm only 19 and have a fast metabolism. I'll have three. If I don't finish them all, I know that my friends behind me will help. She got the three cookies and then walked over to the group of them. Draco landed in the middle of the table. The cadets pulled back in surprise. Jordan: Sorry, he's become a bit of a drama queen. I am Commander Jordan Mackler but since none of us are really on duty yet, call me Jordan. OFF: The fun has arrived! Sorry for not welcoming you earlier cadets. Welcome to Section 47 and to Starbase Conquerer!

Jason watched as a women about the same age he was come into the Bakery. He heard her speak German to Maria, then apologize for her mistake. It was an easy mistake, Jason thought to himself, Tante means Aunt in 3 seperate Terran languages.
She then mentioned she was 19. So there was someone even younger than he was. She ordered some chocolate-chip cookies. Jason then watched in surprise as what looked like a small dragon landed on the table. He sat up quickly.
"Sorry, he's become a bit of a drama queen. I am Commander Jordan Mackler but since none of us are really on duty yet, call me Jordan."
Commander?! Jason was 25 and just barely a Cadet!
Jason: Hello Jordan. I'm Jason Black, Medical Cadet.
He extended his hand.

"Jordan, me friend!"
TJ grinned broadly and his eyes twinkled in merriment as he welcomed the doctor to their table.
Turning to Jason, he added, "'Tis much ye'll be havin' t' do with Dr. Mackler here, Hepta's CMO."

Xin-Ling smiled quietly at Dr. Mackler. It had been some time since she had seen her; indeed, not since the problems with the Fear Vampire on Hepta's last mission.
"Please take seat, Jordan," she invited. "Join us?"
