Lieutenant Gordon was making a very good patient and listend intently to Melain's explenations of the medical supplies. "So Cadet, may I ask how you pronounce your first name? Is the E silent as in Lor, or is it like Lori?"
"It's like Lori, strange I know most people pronounce it like Lore, but It is Bajoran so I geuss that explains it." She repacked his kit and handed it to him. "There you are, all finished." The Lieutant took it and left.
"That leaves you and me Dr. Black." Melain prepped her own injections and almost prepped the ADH as while. How had she made such a mistake, if Michael had not cought it someone could have become seriosly ill, or worse. One day she would (prophets willing) graduate from Starfleet and there wouldn't be anyone to double check her work. Sure she had passed the entrance exams no problem, but was she really suited for Starfleet if she made such mistakes? Her mother had always cautioned her never to reach too far. they held a lower D'jarra and although Bajorans no longer followed the caste system, fate still seemed controlled by this and perhaps she had indeed reached too far.

Jason: Indeed it does. I'll administer these myself, to give you a break. I know what tri-ox feels like, but I'll give myself an injection now to get myself re-used to it.
He prepped the injections himself, and then took one, pressed it to Lorre's neck, and pressed the button to release it into her bloodstream. It hissed as it went in. Jason then did himself.
Jason: There we go. We're all done with that. And don't worry about the problem with ADH injections. Very rarely do Cadets performed perfectly on these cruises. Thats why their called Training Missions. If Starfleet felt like its Cadet could handle the job perfectly on their first assignment, Dr Hope and I would not be here for you as back-up. With the exception of that, you've done exceptionally well.

Melain rubbed her neck, hyperspray injections didn't exactly hurt, but she never had liked the feel of them. "Thank you Doctor, I geuss I feel I should be able to handle myself already. You and the rest of the instructers have been treating us so much like crewman, it's easy to forget we aren't."
Melain packed up her med kit. "Well I supose we should go and get ready since everyone else is probably roaring to go." she gave her instructer a smile before leaving for her quarters.
Danara was (thankfully) not in the quarters, however it looked like the Cardassian Cadet had already started "spreading out" into the whole room. Melain liked order and neatness, Danara seemed to like having everything distributed throught the whoole room, not one data pad sat on top of another. Melain picked her path over to the bed and found her desert uniform. She tried it on and was happy to see it would not need any alterations. She kept it on and packed the rest of what she would need before proceeding to the holodeck for training.

Owen had just finished sending reply messages to the science departments, informing them that the Physics department would have use of the sensors before Stellar Cartography, when Commander Blayne asked him to put the tactical display up on screen.
"Tactical analysis of the freighter, Mr. Johnson."
"Yes sir." Owen responded, cancelling the scan on the gravitic anomaly. "Sir, it appears that they are armed with 1 Mark 8 Klingon Disruptor cannon, 3 Mark 4 Klingon Disruptor Cannons, Romulan regulation shields, and they have FTL sensors, equivalent to Constitution class. It appears that they are transporting Breen handheld disruptors and photon grenades. Overlaying details on screen."
Having asked the Andorians about their situation a message was sent back informing Owen that they were attempting to return to their usual trade route after getting pulled off course by the, as yet, unidentified gravitic anomaly.

"Well done Mr Johnson," S'reena commented from the science station, "if you look closely you will notice the unknown vessel is also fitted with a cloaking device. Perhaps it is a new type which allows for a tractor beam while cloaked?"
She raised an eyebrow as she gazed at the cadet questioningly. So far the cadet was doing exceedingly well, performing above expectations.
"Proceed Mr Johnson," she said, "what is your next course of action?"
She turned her gaze towards Blayne, who seemed to look equally uncomfortable in the captain's chair. She stepped down to command level. "He is doing well," she whispered to him, "might I suggest you two also join the desert training program soon, in the next holodeck?"

"Well Commander, I would recommend caution, it is likely that they have concealed other shipboard weaponry." Owen replied thinking of a way to diffuse this potential dangerous situation.
"We could try a combination of the maquis 'play dead' maneuver and a maneuver first initiated by Commander Riker, in which he sent false information to a Ferengi Marauder. We could send information to the Orions that we are being attacked by Romulan Warbirds, and then we could play dead and see if we can lure them in to tractor range." he supplied.
While he waited for a response he reinitiated scanning the gravitic anomaly. The information he had gathered so far showed that it was similar to a wormhole, however he would need to send the data to the Astrophysics department for further analysis.

As Johnson returned to studying the gravitic anomaly and Cmdr. Hope mentioned the desert training program, YrDis studied the Orion vessel that they had intercepted. Orions were practical, and the Counsellor turned to the holographic tactial officer. "Red alert, activate shields. Lock all phasers on target, and load quantum torpedoes."
The first officer looked at YrDis, eyebrows raised. "Isn't that reaction a little strong?" she inquired.
"I believe that you are manning the Science station right now, Commander Hope". Her eyes widened slightly, then she turned away and walked back to her chair.
After waiting to make sure the freighter knew that the Hanson was ready to attack, he said "Open a channel to the freighter." There was a slight pause, the YrDis said "Orion freighter. This is the USS Hanson. We read that your ship is carrying illegal weaponry as freight. I'm also reasonably sure that the Klingons have not yet started selling their Mark 8 disruptor cannons, and I know that the Romulans don't sell their shield or cloaking technology. Lower your shields and deactivate your weapons. Otherwise, we will be forced to disable your ship. If I am required to do that, I'll be certain to make sure that any one of your crew who survives will be delivered to the Romulan-Klingon border, where they can fight over the chance to put you on trial" the counsellor threatened.
There was a long pause as the computer calculated the most likely response of the Orion ship, then the comm came to life. "We will be delivered to a Federation detention facility?"
"Yes" YrDis replied.
There was another wait, then sensors noted that the Orion shields dropped and their weapons went offline. YrDis sat back in the captain's chair. Sometimes, having Counsellor training was an advantage. He looked over his shoulder at the Ops station. "Any progress on that gravitic anomaly, Mr. Johnson?"

(O.O.C Yes Lorre is my Family name, and that was what DJ Gordon asked me about. Only people who are close to me use my given name as is Bajoran tradition)
Melain stepped into the holodeck and nearly fainted with the sudden change in light and temperatue. She took a moment to settle in before taking a deep breath and trudging after cadet Frek and Lieutenant Gordon. "Believe it or not this was worse then I expected, I supose it's a good thing we've got this training program"

“A good thing Ms. Lorre?” Frek groaned in response to Melain’s remark. “I’ve always convinced myself holodecks are for fun and recreation.” He made a wide gesture to the holographic desert that lay in front of them. “And this is not my idea of fun.” Frek could see the heat was affecting Melain as well. It was probably a bit hard for anyone who wasn’t accustomed to these environments. Cardassians would probably like it, Frek thought. He hesitated for the moment and decided not to share this fact with his fellow cadet. He had the faint impression she wasn’t to fond of Cardassians. He couldn’t blame her. They could be a bit typical sometimes.
“Oh no!” Frek exclaimed and suddenly halted. Melain rushed over to him, grabbing her mediacal tricorder. “What’s wrong?” she asked a bit worried. “Look,” Frek said and looked at her in dismay. He bent over and took one of his shoes of. As soon as he held it upside down a vast stream of fine sand streamed out. “It’s getting everywhere,” he groaned. “It’s only holographic,” Melain remarked. “Maybe,” Frek said as he put his shoe back on, “But it’s real enough for me.” He whipped his forehead with his sleeve. It was soaking wet with sweat. Frek let out a deep sigh and the two cadets followed their way in the wake of commander Gordon.

Lights blinked and quiet buzzers sounded as Tony sat in the middle of his bridge, junior cadets and officers going about their duties around him. Jesin was quite far from Starbase Conqueror and it had taken them longer than usual to get there. But they had- finally.
"Go into high orbit around the planet, Cadet Gill." Tony ordered as the new cadet nervously informed him of their arrival.
"Yes, captain. High orbit." He responded his hands working hard to follow the order.
Tony tapped his combadge, "All training teams- We have arrived at Jesin. Finish your activies, change into your desert gear and bring your emergency pack to transporter room 3. Move quickly. Marcell out." Tony looked at the operations cadet replacing Johnson, "Open a transmission to the planet."
"Aye captain, transmission open." She said pressing a few buttons and nodding at her captain. He smiled.
"This is Captain Antony Marcell commanding the USS Hanson. We are ready to beam down to join your training mission." The bridge was silent for a moment before the Cragorians activated visual contact.
What Tony assumed was a woman appeared on the view screen. She was sitting far back from the screen so Tony could get a full view of her. As Tony looked he thought she looked sort of like a bird... her nose was long and hooked, like a beak and her arms were very wide and long- could they be wings?!
"I am Ietta, senior member of the Cragorian council. We are glad to see you've made the long journey. We are ready to recieve your people. You have 4 teams ready?" Her voice was very calm as well as deep compared to a human woman's.
"Yes. Can myself and my first officer come down with the teams to see the beginning of the competition for ourselves?" Tony said, diplomatically as possible.
"Of course."
"We are beaming down in a few minutes. Where would you like us to arrive?"
"I'm sending you co-ordinates right now." She said nodding to someone off screen.
The cadet at the operations console confirmed that they had received the information.
"Thank you. Hanson out." Tony turned to his tactical instructor, Mortaat, "You have the bridge, commander. S'reena and I will return when the competition has begun." And with that Tony turned and made his way to transporter room 3.

Melain heard her Com badge and the other's as Captain Marcel contacted them
=A="All training teams- We have arrived at Jesin. Finish your activies, change into your desert gear and bring your emergency pack to transporter room 3. Move quickly. Marcell out." =A=
Melain looked at Frek. "Already! we hardly got to finish this simulation!" she stood up and dusted the fake sand off her desert uniform. "Computer end simulation." The desert sean lifted to reveal the plain holosuit.
"See you guys at the transporter." Melain said as she headed to her room were she had left her med kit and other supplies. Danara was sitting at the dest busy with a PADD, she looked up noticably angry about being disrupted, but Melain was out the door before she could say a word.
Will we need to bring our own water, or is that supplied for us? She wonderd as she sped walked through the ahllways to the transporter room. When she arived she noticed she was among the first few there. I supose most of them hadn't changed into their new uniforms yet

"Computer, end program," S'reena said after the message from Captain Marcell had come through. "You two better get into your desert gear," she said, "I will meet you in transporter room 3 in 10 minutes."
She saluted them both and walked off towards the transporter room. Surprisingly, Marcell was already waiting. "Cadet Johnson and Commander Blayne will report in 10 minutes," she said.
Indeed, 10 minutes later, the duo entered the transporter room and shortly after that, the other three teams filed in also.
The teams were transported down first, after which S'reena and Marcell followed.

"Computer, end program. I will meet you in transporter room 3 in 10 minutes" the first officer said.
The bridge of the Hanson faded into the regular lines of Holodeck 1, leaving S'Reena, YrDis and Owen standing in the middle of the empty room. "Aye Commander" YrDis said and walked out of the room.
A brief walk led the counsellor to his quarters. He entered and quickly donned his desert uniform and gathered up a few odds and ends he felt might be useful on the planet. YrDis paused briefly and looked out of his viewport, where the barren planet hovered. The planet made him uneasy for some reason.
Turning quickly, he walked over to a display shelf behind his desk and pulled down an ornate wooden box which was about 40 cm by 10 cm and 10 cm deep. YrDis closed his eyes briefly to remember his friends from the enclave on Ornara who had given this to him just before he left for Starfleet, and opened the box. Inside were two Ornaran Combat Knives set into soft fabric that had been handed down through his family for many generations. The wickedly curved blades gleamed mellowly in the light from the planet, providing a contrast for the jet black hilts which seemed to swallow light entirely, but somehow still managed to show the intricate engravings that were incised into them. He still didn't know how JayRon and the rest had managed to find them after the riots, but it didn't matter now.
YrDis quickly took out the sheaths and strapped them to his back in the traditional fashion, with the curves between his spine and shoulder blades and inserted the blades. He thought briefly about their mission. Weapons weren't specifically allowed, but they weren't prohibited either. He shrugged, threw his cloak over his shoulders and left for Sickbay where he received his shot and emergency pack.
By the time he arrived at the transporter room, all but a few had shown up. YrDis and the first group climbed onto the pad and beamed down.
Hot and bright were all that his brain could process when he materialized on the surface.

The tingling sensation soon faded away. Frek looked around curiously. It wasn’t exactly how he had expected it to be. The first thing he noted was trees and the local form of grass. Apparently they had beamed down to some sort of park. At the edges he could make out elaborate buildings. Quite beautiful, he decided for himself. High above him he could make out some sort of ceiling. Probably made out of some strong sort of strong transparent material. Or perhaps a forcefield. It was clear the Cragorians choose to welcom them in one of there dome cities. It looked quite agreeable. Frek dismissed the thought of the nasty desert waiting for them outside the dome. Captain Marcel and commander S’reena stood by a tall weird looking being. Must be one of the Cragorians. Frek couldn’t help thinking it looked like something that could take of and fly away any moment. He had known from the start. Cargorians are weird.

Melain had braced her self in expectation of the hot and dry desert, and was presently surprised when she materialized. Certainly the Dome was hotter then the ship, but much more pleasent then the desert holosimulation had been.
She had expected a more reptillian humanoid when she first heard about the Cragorians, so the site of them, bird like surprised her and she could not help but wonder if they had still managed to retain their flight abilities after attaining sentiance. She suddenly realised that she was representing the Federation, and needed to make a good impression. She smiled and straitend up.

Frek was still gazing at the cities amazing architecture, slowly swaying his antennae’s in awe, when Lorre Melain a prod in his side. “Come on,”she hissed, “We’re Federation representatives.” He immediately followed Melain’s example and straightened his uniform and put up smile.
“Ah. Let me introduce you to two of our cadets,” said Captain Marcell with a gesture to Melain and Frek as they approached. “This is our cadet for the medical department, Ms. Lorre Melain and for out navigation department Frek Thelev.” The Cragorian party looked at them with interest. They probably never seen a Bajoran or for that matter an Andorian. Someone pointed at the Frek’s antennae’s, muttered something to it’s companion and let out a soft cackling sound. Not unlike that of a chicken. Frek gave them a friendly smile. As if they look so good with their beaks and beady birdy eyes, he thought. “I assume the others are on their way?” S’reena asked. “Yes sir,” Lorre replied. “Good,” Blayne said, “Once we’re all here we can get on with the formal introductions.”

Owen made his way to the transporter room upon being dismissed from the holodeck. As he got there he suddenly remembered that he needed his environmental pack and suit. Having lived on Mars and camped regularly out in the more desertous regions, Owen felt as though he might have an advantage against some of the other cadets.
Having finally gotten everything together, Owen made his way back to the transporter room for transport to the surface. Upon reaching the surface he felt the pleasant (at least to him) temperature that was a good 5 degrees (kelvin) higher than aboard the ship. The light glistened off the windows and the lake in the center of the park.
After noticing his surroundings he looked over at the Cragorians. They were birdlike and not at all suited to desertous conditions, at least by looks alone. However they must have evolved correctly if they had survived, not only survived but flourished, here up until now. Glancing around at the buildings again Owen estimated that there must be at least 2 million Cragorians in this domed city alone.
Having taken in his surroundings and the Cragorians, Owen stood at ease and waited to be addressed.

"Welcome to Jesin, Captain Marcell." Ietta said coming forward, reaching out a hand, "I believe this is your traditional greeting."
"Indeed it is." Tony said taking her hand and shaking it, then motioned to S'reena had his side, "This is my first officer S'reena Hope." S'reena also shook the Cragorian woman's hand. The first group of teams beamed down behind them. Frek Thelev and Lorre Melain soon came their way, "And this is our cadet for the medical department, Ms. Lorre Melain and for our navigation department, Frek Thelev.”
A pair of Cragorians in the group behind Ietta pointed obviously at Frek and Melain talking and laughing. Tony assumed these were young cadets, to be so outright in their rudeness. Ietta acknoledged Lorre and Thelev, and Johnson when he arrived in the next group.
Fairly soon all 4 teams had arrived and Ietta told them to follow her and the other cragorians into a building. Tony noticed they were not flying, and wondered if they were doing so because of a lack of ability or in politeness for their grounded guests. She led them into one of the larger buildings.
"Tomorrow morning will be the start of the competition, that is when you will be given your instructions." Ietta said, "For now you will be roomed the rest of your teams."
She held up a device similiar to a starfleet PADD and began walking down the hallway, reading out names, "Room 1. Team 1: Owen Johnson, Beli-Tovad, Yrdis Blayne, Lawen-Forralti," She pointed those people into room 1, "Unpack and be ready for duty in the morning. You can wander about this hallway and visit your competitors but no farther until you are called out in the morning."
She directed the next team, "Room 2. Team 2: Frek Thelev, Lallii-Do, D J Gordan, Ing-Sovalan." She gave each team the same speech as the 1st team had gotten and fairly soon all the teams were in their rooms, unpacking and meeting their new Cragorian teammates.
Ietta turned to Tony and S'reena, they were the only ones left in the hallway now, "Do you wish to have a room to stay in until the competition starts tomorrow?" She asked politely.
"Yes that would be wonderful. Can you give us anymore information about the competition?" Tony asked.
"I'm afraid not, we do not intend on giving the teams any time to prepare themselves for their task. I promise you will find out all the details you wish tomorrow. That room at the end of the hall is vacant. If you need anything please just talk to the guide outside the door." And with that Ietta left them to wait until morning and the start of the competition.
As S'reena and Tony went to put the few little things like their PADD's and tricorders in their room, Tony wondered how his cadets and instructors were doing with their new team-mates.

Lorre had left for the holodeck for some desert training. Jason thought it a good idea, as theres not much desert on Bajor. Jason chose to skip that training himself, as he had been raised in such an environment. He chose to pursue some different preparation. He turned to his console.
Jason: Computer, open a subspace link to the Federation Planetary Database.
Computer: Working.....Ready.
Jason: Find any information available on the Cragorian homeworld Jesin.
The Computer beeped for a few moments then came up with what it could: An H-Class planet home to Cragorians. Planet is uncharted. No further information available. Starfleet vessel currently assigned to visit planet. Jason read the information quickly ~Just as I thought. We're going to be the first ones to find out anything about this planet.
Jason: Computer, give me an image of an typical earth cactus.
The image came up on the screen behind him.
Jason: Alright then. Computer, download the image to the PADD with serial number ::he picked up a blank PADD and checked:: J34A.
The image appeared. Jason pressed a button to close out he had been doing and left his Office. He grabbed his equipment back. He stopped just as he reached the door and turned around, remembering something.
Jason: Michael, Commander Blayne hasn't been by for his injection or equipment yet. Make sure he gets them when he comes by.
Michael: Will do.
Jason left Sickbay and quickly went to his quarters. He found the desert uniform. It was a complete set of clothing, right down to the boots. ~Wonderful. A complete uniform change. I'm already pressed for time~ He immediately started pulling off his uniform. Then he placed on the white pants, the short-sleeve shirt with the teal band across the chest to indicate medical, and then the boots. He reached for the cloak, but paused. He went over to his closet and opened it. He pulled out a belt and put it on. It had holsters on either side. He removed from his closet a sheathed machete and placed in the holster on the left, then a small hunting knife and placed it on the right. After making sure they were fit snug, he turned back.
He walked back to the cloak and put it on. It concealed the majority of the machete and all of the hunting knife. He placed the PADD in the pack along with everything else, barely fitting it in. He placed the equipment pack on his back, and then after looking around to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything, left his quarters and headed for the transporter room.
When he re-materialized on the surface, he had an immediate impression. ~It's almost exactly like home~ The dry, hot air was like the breath of life on his face. Starships were always a little cooler and moisty than he prefered. He turned to the Captain.
Jason: Forgive me, Captain. Took me a moment to get ready ::he turned to the person that appeared to the senior member of the delegation:: Greetings. I am Doctor Jason Black, Medical Instructor. ::He reached around into the pack and pulled out the PADD:: I am curious. We have plant on my world called a cactus. It's a tall, slender green plant with a hard herbaceous shell, and covered in long spines. Inside it there is a porous material that holds water. Do you have a plant like it? Looks like this.
He handed him the PADD. He looked at it for a moment, then a look of recognition came on his face.
Cragorian: Yes, indeed we do. They are quite abundant.
Jason: Excellent.

Melain began even more nervouse as Frek and Owen left with ther instructers for their rooms, what was keeping Dr. Black? She hid her nerves by smiling at the Cragorian trainees and was about to begin conversation when her instructer materialized. She gave him a relieved smile and listend with intrest as he showed Ietta the PADD with the cactus on it.
"Come I'll show you to your rooms" Ietta said, leading the way to the compound. Melain flel in step behind her and beside Dr. Black.
"What have you got in mind Doctor?" she asked pointing at the PADD "I've seen those plants before, but It seems to me that all they do is give you prickles to pull out."

Frek followed his instructor and the Cragorian cadets to their quarters. He was surprised that the Cragorians didn’t even inform the Captain what the training was about. He found himself thinking it was rather strange. Perhaps it was their way to test Starfleet and the Federation. Frek let it all out of his mind. He was sure the instructors knew what they were doing. He had overheard Dr. Black inquiring about cactuses. He sincerely hoped they weren’t supposed to feed themselves on it. He suddenly realised he was rather hungry and wondering what was for dinner. You never knew with some species.

S'reena looked around her as they had beamed down. Instantly, she excused herself and put on her sunglasses. "I am terribly sorry for hiding my eyes from you," she said, "but my eyes are sensitive to the bright light."
She looked the birdlike creature over and instantly guessed that the Federation cadets would be at a disadvantage. The creatures had wings, and seemed to be well insulated from heat as well as cold with their feather like hides.
Though the darkened glasses, she gazed around. "Lovely place you got here though," she continued, "don't they captain?" She listened as she heard the cadets and instructors voice their opinions of the place as well.
"When do we start?" S'reena finally asked.

Walking alongside Frek and our cragorian counterparts to our quarters I could tell that my cadet was having the same kinds of issues with the "unknown" factor as I was. In time he will learn how to mask his thoughts and concerns from others, afterall the difference between life and death could be a well placed bluff.
Entering the quarters I was impressed with how large they and spacious they were with 4 large what almost looked like cages stood up against the wall.
~this could be interesting~ I thought as I turned to address my Cragorian contemporary.
"Are these where you sleep?" I asked pointing towards the cages.
" Those are our resting palates, Do they meet your needs?" The Cragorian replied without looking back at me.
"They will be fine with a little bit of moving around and some improvisation." With that cadet Thelev and I laid out 2 of the cages and made them into makeshift beds.
As we finished that we once again tried to make small talk with the Cragorians with little to no success so I turned back and asked Thelev.
"So Mr. Thelev, please tell me a little bit more about yourself."

YrDis quickly got used to the climate insided the domes. He had been expecting to materialize in the desert. So much for assumptions.
The Federation group had materialized in front of a group of Cragorians, and the counsellor examined them briefly. Oddly birdlike, with a feathery or fur like covering. Captain Marcell stepped forward and officially greeted the leader of the Cragorian group. In the back, he could see two of the Cragorians casting glances at the Starfleet group and talking quietly. Marcell noticed as well, and YrDis could see a hint of irritation, but hoped the captain would let it pass. The beings of this planet might not have similar body language to humans, so there was probably nothing to be insulted about. YrDis would have to chat with as many natives as he could, as this would be a first contact for Starfleet.
YrDis listened as the first two teams were announced. He and Johnson had been paired with Cragorians named Beli-Torad and Lawen-Foralti and assigned a room. YrDis had been watching, and the leader of the Cragorians had gestured at two of the birdlike creatures to the back and right.
YrDis decided to take the initiative and looked back at Johnson. "You're with me, cadet." He nodded and the two of them walked over to their new team mates.
The counsellor looked at the two Cragorians carefully. The one on the right looked a bit older than the other, and YrDis could see that he had several scars across the left arm and chest. Hoping for the best, he said "Lawen-Foralti?"
The being eyes were expressionless, but he held forward both arms, hands open and level at his waist. YrDis could see that Cragorians had three taloned fingers and an opposing thumb. Hoping that this was similar to a handshake, YrDis copied the gesture, and could see Owen Johnson following along.
"You are YrDis Blayne, Counsellor? This is my trainee, Beli-Torad" he said in a raspy voice. The other Cragorian did the hands open gesture, which YrDis and Owen returned. YrDis noted with some surprise that the Cragorian spoke in English with no translator required. He was also of the opinion that Beli-Torad was a female Cragorian.
YrDis looked at Owen and waited for the cadet to introduce himself.
<Owen>
Introductions complete, the four of them looked at one another in silence, sizing each group up. Finally, Lawen-Foralti said "We should proceed to our quarters." YrDis nodded and the four of them set off.
