Entering the bridge, Drew was pleased to see that so many of the senior staff had already returned to the ship, and were at their stations. After a lengthy stop at Starbase Conqueror, the Hanson was now once again due to fly amongst the stars, with an entirely new group of eager cadets.
“Once more into the unknown Number One,” Drew said to First Officer S’reena Hope as he took his seat next to hers.
“Indeed,” S’reena replied with a sly smile, “although I am not so sure what is unknown about it anymore.”
“The joys of teaching,” Drew replied, a smile on his own face, “how long until the new recruits arrive?”
S’reena held up the padd that she had been reviewing, from a quick glance, Drew saw it contained details on all the new cadets who would be joining the Hanson for this training mission.
“They should all be arriving within the hour,” S’reena said, “I’ll be heading down to greet them all myself.”
“Very good,” Drew answered, looking around the bridge, which with just the senior staff on seemed unusually empty. After18 months of commanding the Hanson, Drew had gotten used to have a bridge crowded with cadets and officers.
“It will be nice to have the place full of life again,” he commented, as he reviewed a ship status report that an Ensign had passed to him.
“Believe me, with four children running around, this place is never lifeless for me,” S’reena said with a chuckle, as she returned to reading her padd.
“Ah yes, I remember those days well,” Drew laughed, “believe me, its wonderful when they all grow up.”
“Oh?” S’reena said, raising an eyebrow, “what about the trouble they cause?”
Painful reminders of his recent conversations with his eldest daughter, who had ran off with Drew’s former Chief of Security, gotten pregnant by said officer, and now been deserted by him, flooded into Drew’s mind. He had yet to reply to the messages that his daughter had sent him, he was still uncertain how he should handle the situation. Taking on a Borg cube he could do, but dealing with his children was an entirely different matter.
“You learn to deal with it,” was all Drew said in response to his First Officer, then as he stood from his chair he added, “can you assemble the senior staff please, its time for the briefing.”
Five minutes later, the entire senior staff of the Hanson were gathered in the briefing room.
“Well first of all ladies and gentlemen,” Drew said taking his seat, “welcome back, I am glad to see none of you got lost during shore leave.”
There was the usual polite chuckle that officers did when an Admiral made a joke, when everyone was again calm, Drew continued.
“Before I get started, I would just like to welcome aboard our new Engineer; Lucy Kanz, I am sure you will fit right in here Ms. Kanz.”
Everyone turned to smile at the newest addition to the crew.
“Now onto business,” Drew said, “Starfleet have a very simple mission for us this time round, you will all be glad to know we are not going to be escorting any Ambassadors this time round,” during the Hanson’s last mission they had taken on an Federation Ambassador, who was actually a Breen spy, who after attempting to steal Starfleet technology, had also attempted to kill Drew, S’reena, and Second Officer Brelev.
Drew stood and walked towards the large screen on the side wall of the briefing room, keying in some commands, he brought up an image of a star system.
“This is the Wilkes system,” he said, indicating the screen, “in just over a week’s time, the star is going to go nova, Starfleet simply want us to observe the event and gather data. It is hoped we may be able to use the information to find ways to prolong the life of similar stars.”
“Simple is the right term,” Methos said under his breath.
“We can’t be fighting off invaders every mission now Colonel,” Drew said with a chuckle, returning to his seat, “we depart as soon as the cadets are aboard, which according to what S’reena tells me should be in the next twenty minutes, those of you with assigned cadets should get down to the transporters room with S’reena. Dismissed.”
As the senior staff all walked back out onto the bridge, S’reena, Methos, Crystal and Konal all made their way to the turbolift, the others all took their stations.
“Jason, start preparations for our departure,” Drew ordered, taking his chair, “Lucy, bring the warp core online, and confirm our readiness for departure.
“Aye sir,” both replied.
“Daya, bring the tactical database online, and load in the usual drill scenarios, when we get chance, we will test the mantel of these new cadets.”
“Aye aye Admiral,” Daya answered.
“Very good,” Drew replied, leaning back his chair and folding his arms. With the orders given, all he could now do was wait for the cadets to arrive.
OOC:
Everyone feel free to join in. Cadets, you will all be arriving by transporter, where you will be greeted by First Officer Commander S’reena Hope, Navigations Officer Commander Crystal Shinsei, Marine Officer Lt. Colonel Methos and Science Officer Lt. Commander Konal Manto.
Any cadets who have to report to the Hanson may also post on this thread, we will work out the details later.

Daya had been on board the hanson for most of the return leave, just didnt have anything better to do really. He spent alot of time in the holodeck, remaking a few of his favorite programs, and creating some new ones of course. He received the call to head to the breifing room, and finished what he was doing. Upon entering the room, he saw most of the other officers already there, and waited for the others.
Daya left the briefing room when everything was said and done, and heade towards his station. As far as he knew, there would be no security cadet this mission, so he could almost relax, it seemed to him that not having a cadet was more stressfull than having one. Daya smiled as he input the new drills he had thought up, and added in an encryption code to disrupt anyone from meddling with his work.

Crystal walked with the other instructors who had cadets this mission. There didn't seem to be very many this mission, although Crystal supposed that could change before the Hanson actually left.
Crystal waited for the cadets, trying to avoid seeming like a nervous parent who was worried her child might not make it out of the park. But she always enjoyed meeting new cadets, since they were so often enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about Navigation. For a little while Crystal had started to wonder whether she could teach that much when the cadets already knew so much. But she realized, eventually, that they, generally, had more theoretical knowledge, but she could still help in the practical applications.
Crystal looked at the other officers, realizing that she really didn't talk all that much with the other instructors. And that maybe she should. She really wasn't sure what to say though, so she guessed she could start with a basic question. And if the cadets appeared before people had a chance to answer, maybe that would be for the better. “You looking forward to a quieter mission, or not?” Crystal asked.

Brelev had spent the briefing near the back of the room in silence. She was not eager to do what she was about to do. As the rest of the senior staff left she approached Admiral Drew. "Admiral." she began.
"Go ahead doctor."
"I.... You may have been aware that over the leave I went back to Denobula for a week." Drew nodded, of course he knew, Brelev had insured that. "I... my mother is very very ill. I have been offered a post at a medical facility not far from her home and I think... I must accept it. I don't have many family left, and I am not getting any younger and...."
"Its not like there is an excessive amount of Denobulan men running around Conquerer." Admiral Drew smiled.
Brelev blushed. "No, no sir there are not. I guess I am turning in my resignation."
Paul took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "We will miss you very much doctor, but if this is what you feel you must do I am not going to stand in your way. When will you be leaving for your home world?"
"Soon, as soon as I'm packed and ready." Brelev replied as she unclipped her commbadge and pips.
"Don't leave too quickly, there will be others anxious to say their goodbyes." Paul replied, he held his hand up, palm out wards to ward off the pips and commbadge in Brelev's hand. "Don't give me those. I'm not going to let you simply resign. I'm going to give you and extended leave for as long as you need, but I am not letting you out of here that easily."
"I... but sir?" Brelev protested.
"keep them safe, and know where they are. I have a feeling this ship has not seen the last of you." The Admiral insisted.

“You looking forward to a quieter mission, or not?”
S'reena cast Crystal a grim smile. "While I don't mind a quiet mission from time to time, without getting shot, abducted or whatnot, just sitting by and watch a star go nova does seem to be a little stretched doesn't it? I suppose Starfleet lost faith in us, as we did fail on our last objective, training mission or not. Perhaps doing this right will have ourselves redeemed before the admiralty?"
She glanced down at the PADD she was holding. "We're expecting four cadets," she said, scrolling down to the cadet information, "funnily enough the male/female distribution on cadets is even as we have two males and two females."
The Romulan glanced sideways at her two female companions. "The both of you will have a cadet. Crystal you will guide Cadet Brad Jones on flight techniques, improve him where necessary. Konal you will be guiding Cadet Alesia Curell on both scientific and medical matters." Her smile turned grim again, but only briefly. "Perhaps get her to do the crew physicals in combination with a scientific project? Oh, and this nova could be interesting enough...perhaps the effect of this nova on the crew of the Hanson?" She raised an eyebrow at the Cardassian science officer.
S'reena scanned her PADD again. "Two left, for our rogue security and marine officer...perhaps having a cadet will keep them out of trouble for a change, what do you reckon? "Cadet Aris Viernes is assigned to Methos, while Cadet Paul Hatchet is assigned to Daya." She groaned softly at the mention of the latter. "He's a menace I tell you!" Then she smiled. "But a loyal one...I have to grant him that. Hmm, I might get Methos and Viernes to watch Drew's back. God knows our dear admiral has a knack of entering trouble, wanted or not, hm?"
As she talked, the three women noticed the hatch opening. "Ah, here they come."
(cadets...join in! please note that I only tag cadets through the first two weeks of mission. After that I will not be tagging anyone anymore, and I will not enter taglines for instructors.)

[Entry Portal/Air Lock, USS Hanson]
Alesia stopped briefly at her quarters and picked up her few belongings before continuing on to the USS Hanson, the ship which would be her home during her training period.
She didn’t take long to arrive at the entry port, supplying her identification documents and then she was through the entry port and was about to make her way through the corridors of the ship to the bridge where she’d been informed the senior staff waited the arrival of all the cadets for this mission when she saw several of what appeared to be the Senior Staff and most likely their instructors standing near the air lock.
As she approached them several thoughts wandered through her mind but most of all was the excitement she felt within as the anticipation of the upcoming training mission took hold.
After quickly straightening her uniform and taking a deep breath. She stepped to where they stood and saluted the most senior of the officers, inside she was nervous, the limp which had plagued her since the accident evident as she walked.
“Cadet 4th Class Alesia Currell reporting as ordered, Sir.”

“You looking forward to a quieter mission, or not?”
Konal allowed the others to answer. She decided that, after her breakdown at the bakery - leaving awkwardly without saying goodbye - she would wait awhile to engage Crystal again. It was out of embarrassment that she remained silent.
Commander Hope gave her two cents about the upcoming mission, eying Konal funnily as she did so. Konal couldn't help to think she was being looked down upon, for the Commander was specifically letting her know what her Cadet would do. Perhaps it was because last time, her Cadet kept getting injured? She felt like telling Commander Hope that it wasn't her fault, but she knew it was probably not wise to start an argument with the Romulan first officer.
A few minutes later, the Cadets came flowing in. "Did you get lost Cadet?" Currell looked a little bashful. Konal turned to S'reena. "I was walking a bit fast--- I accidentally lost her on the way." she gave a giggle.
Her new Cadet appeared human. The Cardassian commander knew better than to make assumptions, though, since there were plenty of races that appeared to be human. Her records, which Konal would pour over later, would denote her race.
"I'd take your hair out of the pony tail," the instructor politely warned the Cadet. "I am pretty sure that's outside of regulations for appropriate attire." She then leaned in and whispered - "I'm not quite the stickler for rules- but others are. I don't want you to get into trouble." she leaned back out, smiling as if she didn't have the conversation.
<Currell>
"So, what sort of training have you had? I mean, science-wise."
<Currell>
"Well, let's head to sickbay. Hopefully Dr. Brelev is there." Konal realized that the petite cadet did not know the names around here. "She's the Chief Medical Officer. Very nice. You'll like her."
The two head out of the airlock after Konal asked the Commander if she could be dismissed. Again, a formality she wouldn't mind dropping.
"So - let me explain what this mission is going to be about. It's going to have a lot of scientific opportunities..." the conversation continued along the route to main sickbay.
(Same as Commander Hope, I will not be tagging instructors at all, nor cadets after week 2)

Daya was sitting at his console, checking over systems and getting his reports from his squads. He was alittle surprised to see that he had indeed received a cadet for this mission, and was waiting for him. Inputing a few commands, he set up a small drill for the cadet, in which he would have to show Daya how he would handle a small dispuit between crew members.
The other drills Daya had set up, were meant for the entire crew, where they would have to reenact a take over of the ship. It was simple enough considering it was only a drill, but if he felt he should make it more realistic he would ask permission first.

Methos was playing out his current attempt at writing a holo-novel, when he got the word the he should report to the Hanson. She was due to put out, just as soon as the cadets were on board. Methos had the computer save his current progress and transfer the data to the Hanson where, time permitting, he would work on it some more.
He remembered that the Hanson was not physically docked with the station, which was unusual for a ship of the Academy Fleet. He went to one of the multitudes of transporter rooms that were on the Star Base. He asked the Transporter Chief to transport him to the Hanson.
He materialized in the Hanson’s Transporter Room 1. He nodded to the technician that was handling his rematerialization. He exited the room and went to the turbolift. When he got it he said, “Deck 9.” As the lift began to descend, he stood there looking at a panel that had be opened and left like that.
He tapped his commbadge and said, =/\=Methos to engineering.=/\=
=/\=This is Ensign Smith, go ahead sir.=/\=
=/\=Was someone working on the turbolifts recently?=/\=
=/\=Not that I was aware of sir. Do you want me to ask SB Conqueror?=/\=
=/\=Yes, please let me know when you find out. Methos out.=/\=
The lift stopped and let him out on Deck 8. He went down the hall to the next turbolift and had it take him to deck nine. He arrived at his office shortly thereafter. He checked any messages he had and saw that he had one cadet, an Aris Viernes. Her orders did not include a Bio, which was odd for Star Fleet. I must be losing my mind, Methos thought.
Methos was just settling in, Commander Hope called over the comm to have all instructors report to the Briefing Room. Methos did not want to go through the malfunctioning turbolift again, so he had the computer set up a site-to-site transport. He was the first one in the briefing room because of it. Shortly after he materialized, in walked Admiral Drew and Commander Hope. The were surprised to see him standing there, so he said, “Before you ask, one of the Turbolifts is malfunctioning and I didn’t want to risk being late."
~~~~~~~~~~After the briefing~~~~~~~~~~
Methos was standing on the bridge, reading the report that Ensign Smith gave him about all the work orders done on the Hanson since it docked.
(OOC: All the turbolifts will all be malfunctioning over the course of the mission. You tell it to take you to one deck, and it takes you to another. I thought we could give our new engineer something to do for her first mission ;D)
Brad woke up with a start, for some reason he was hearing an alarm that he didn't remember setting. In fact, he didn't remember much of anything about the night before. He was sure he'd headed out in an apparently mis-guided attempt to pick up, and he remembered buying a stunning young lady a drink, but as to where he was and why it was so noisy he had no idea.
"Cadet Brad Jones?" queried a female starfleet officer in a voice that sent shock-waves through Brad's head.
"That's me ... Sir." Brad responded as he stumbled to his feet, supporting himself against the wall and wondering exactly why the world was spinning around his feet.
"Starfleet has seen fit to post your bail, on the proviso that you stay out of trouble from now on." the officer informed Brad in a no more pleasant voice.
"Bail, sir?" asked Brad, "why would I need bail posted?" he continued before losing the fight with gravity and falling ungracefully to the ground in a heap.
"After running around in a drunk and disorderly state and vandalizing property, I personally am surprised that they're letting you aboard the Hanson, even if you were one of the top three graduates of the academic courses this year." she blared on in a quite exasperated tone. "Now get to your feet and follow me to the station sickbay."
~Several hours later~
Having been escorted to the sickbay and then duly escorted to his quarters to sleep the effects of the alcohol off, Brad was feeling a lot better. This time he was hearing an alarm that he did remember setting, the alarm that was to wake him so he wasn't late arriving aboard the Hanson. After quickly showering and gathering his belongings Brad headed out the door, whistling on his way to the transporter room.
"Transport me to the Hanson, please Chief." he requested before momentarily shimmering and disappearing from the room.
~Hanson's transporter room~
As he arrived on the Hanson, Brad was quite nervous. He'd done quite well prior to the previous night, but he wasn't sure how that would look on his record in front of his instructors. As the hatch opened Brad swallowed noticeably before taking his first steps through.
"Cadet Brad Jones reporting for duty." he said in a voice that quavered a little.
[Entry Portal/Air Lock, USS Hanson]
Alesia bit her lip as Paul appeared and reported in, talk about last minute she thought. If he's like this all mission it should get interesting.
"Did you get lost Cadet?" was the first words from Lt. Cmdr. Manto after Alesia relaxed from her salute.
"No Sir, I had to pick up the rest of my things." Alesia replied as the Lt. Cmdr. continued. "I'd take your hair out of the pony tail," the instructor politely warned the Cadet. "I am pretty sure that's outside of regulations for appropriate attire."
"Yes Sir." Alesia said as she tucked one bag beneath her arm and reached back to release her hair to flow down her back. A smile crossed her features at the Lt. Cmdrs. whisper. "I'm not quite the stickler for rules- but others are. I don't want you to get into trouble."
Alesia settled slightly as the Science Instructor continued speaking. "So, what sort of training have you had? I mean, science-wise."
"I took the required courses in both Science and Medicine, as well as a year on board the training vessel, the USS Paulson."
Lt. Cmdr. Manto and Alesia soon headed for sickbay, the Lt. Cmdr. briefing her on the upcoming mission along the way.
"So - let me explain what this mission is going to be about. It's going to have a lot of scientific opportunities..."
As they walked and chatted Alesia felt comfortable with her instructor. She was careful to pace herself so that her limp would not interfere with her keeping up with her. This was something she'd learned through practice since the accident.
By the time they had reached sickbay she'd been thoroughly briefed on the misson and was up to speed.
Lucy stayed quiet during the briefing. It would take a few days before she got her head around things and in that time she was determined to not say anything that would make her stand out as new. The silence would quite likely have the same effect, but she still preferred it as an option.
“Before I get started, I would just like to welcome aboard our new Engineer; Lucy Kanz, I am sure you will fit right in here Ms. Kanz.”
She blushed as everyone turned in her direction. Recently she had been experimenting with blocking her empathic skills, and at that point she was glad she had. The last thing anyone needs in a new job is to hear their coworkers first impressions.
After the meeting, Lucy made her way down to engineering to see what was happening. She'd been in there a few times over the previous few days to check out where everything was, but somehow this was the first time that it felt anywhere close to real.
She stopped a passing engineer and asked if there was anything major wrong with the ship. He laughed a little, "Oh yes, you're definitely new. Here's the list"
Crystal smiled comfortingly at the obviously nervous cadet. “Welcome aboard. At ease.” She had been informed of the incident that occurred last night, but she wasn't really worried about it. From what she could tell this was the first such event. Crystal was a great believer in second chances.
“Permission to be dismissed,” Crystal asked Commander Hope, following Konal's example. And it was a good thing Konal had done so first, or else Crystal might have forgotten. And she really didn't want to lapse in front of a cadet.
“Want to visit the bridge?” she asked Brad. “Check out the navigation console?” Once she and Brad were in the hallway, on their way to the bridge, Crystal turned to him while they were walking. “You don't have to worry about your time in the brig last night too much,” she said, hoping she could be reassuring. “Trust me, everyone's made mistakes. And they still let me into Starfleet.” Crystal smiled brightly, as she and Brad Jones entered the turbolift.
“Deck One,” Crystal ordered. The turbolift hummed slightly, as it headed up. The doors opened, but Crystal could tell almost instantly that this was not the bridge. For one, there were neither consoles nor a viewscreen, though the lack of the latter was kind of a good thing, in Crystal's mind. For another, this was very near sickbay.
Crystal stepped back into the turbolift, casting a curious glance at Jones. “What deck is this?” Crystal asked the computer.
“This is deck five.”
Ok, so the computer was right about that. “Take me to deck one.”
“Unable to comply. The turbolift is already at deck one.” Crystal couldn't say that she understood the situation, but she let engineering know about it, and looked to find another turbolift. If that one hadn't worked she would have tried the jeffries tubes, but fortunately it did, and she and Jones arrived on the bridge without further delay.
Crystal gestured Jones toward the navigation console. “Don't take her out of dock until Admiral Drew commands you to do so, but please do familiarize yourself with the controls.”
As the instructors wandered off with their cadets, and Hatchet had gone off on his own to find Daya, S'reena found herself left behind at the hatch. She had no family to look after at this time because she had arranged with Polly Edwards to leave her five children in the young woman's care. S'reena had decided she needed a little more time for herself, and her husband and with five young children that was next to impossible.
The youngster had reluctantly agreed, arguing that she was too young to look after so many children, especially one that was regularly ill. S'reena had assured her that she'd do well, and knew she would do as she'd observed her behaviour with the children. She seemed to have an innate talent for dealing with children, despite her own harsh raising.
Thus, S'reena had left them with Polly and had reported to the Hanson after saying her goodbyes to her former Captain, Tony Marcell and to Captain TJ Edwards. Now, she stood a little forlorn at the hatch, already regretting her decision. She checked her PADD for the duty roster and saw that the new chief engineer would have reported to engineering by now.
She called the turbolift and told it to go to engineering. Instead, she ended up at deflector control. Sighing, she entered the Jeffries tube system and crawled her way to engineering. "There's something wrong with the turbolifts," she told the new chief engineer.
S'reena studied the young woman, guessing her to be no older than twenty standard years. Her record was a mystery to the Romulan, with many details missing. Yet the name was very familiar. "You wouldn't happen to be related to a L'Ola Kanz would you?' she suddenly asked out of the blue, "back when I was still the science instructor, I taught a cadet named L'Ola Kanz. That is several years ago now."
Daya was in the midst of going over his new drills, just double checking to make sure nothign went wrong, when behidn him her heard a voice. "Lt Commander Daya? Cadet 4th class Paul Hatchet reporting for duty sir."
"Ah, welcome cadet, before we being, tell me about your training."
"I have had Training in Sec/Tact and several hours of of holodeck simulation training" Paul said hoping that everything he has done will pay off big time.
"what kind of simulation training cadet? do you know any other languages, or parts of languages? do you have any combat training? any form of martial arts by chance?" Daya asked all these questions quickly, testing the cadets nerve and reaction time
"Good cadet, thats what i wanted to hear" Daya turned back to the console momentarily, then tapped his comm badge. "Daya to admiral Drew, permission to engage in a quick drill with my cadet"
"... and we'll be checking that leg out - " Konal mentioned, having noticed that the Cadet was favoring one over the other. "Luckily - we have some of the best doctors in starfleet here in sickbay."
It was a miracle that they even made it to sickbay. The turbolift, along the way, had dropped them off at the bridge, clearly malfunctioning, as Commander Manto was certain she said 'main sickbay'. After a few calls to engineering, and some trial and error in the turbolift, they finally had made it.
"We just got a new Chief of Engineering. She probably hasn't done a system check yet." To Konal, it never seemed like engineering was on top of things... but then again, it was a big ship, and with Konal's limited engineering capability, she wouldn't be able to do much better.
"Alrighty - you say you have medical training, but I think we best let the doctors here perform your physical." Konal punched a few symbols on her padd, and it brought up the young Cadet's bio. The Cardassian instructor read through the bio quickly. There were a few cases of Telarian flu, but nothing too severe.
Alesia had an interesting figure. Her blue eyes contrasted sharply with her black hair, which was still kinked where the band had held it earlier. It reminded Konal of herself, twenty years prior, before her hair had turned gray. For a middle aged Cardassian, however, gray hair was welcome - as it signified wisdom that could only come with age.
"This should be pretty quick... All we need is a Doctor!" The two looked around, but nobody was in sickbay. "Well - if we don't find anyone soon, we can put this off until later. As a part of the medical profession, you probably have already perfected avoiding doctors I bet." Konal let out a light-hearted laugh. "hehe ahh.... and they say Doctors make the worst patients." she continued her laughter, remembering the last time she was in this sickbay. Her laughter went long enough that she had to explain to Currell why she was still laughing. "The last time I was here we had a tribble on the loose. That vermin was horrible. I'm so glad it is gone."
Laughter subsiding, the two sat quietly in sickbay until Konal could stand the silence no more.
"Perhaps we could get started on some science training here while we wait." Alesia perked up, awaiting any orders that Konal would give.
"Perhaps we can start with ...." but before Konal could finish, the sickbay doors opened, and a doctor walked in.OOC: Alesia, continue the storyline from here. Feel free to make up things as you go -- After all, that's all I have been doing.
Daya was in the midst of going over his new drills, just double checking to make sure nothign went wrong, when behidn him her heard a voice. "Lt Commander Daya? Cadet 4th class Paul Hatchet reporting for duty sir." "Ah, welcome cadet, before we being, tell me about your training." "I have had Training in Sec/Tact and several hours of of holodeck simulation training" Paul said hoping that everything he has done will pay off big time."what kind of simulation training cadet? do you know any other languages, or parts of languages? do you have any combat training? any form of martial arts by chance?" Daya asked all Hatchet responded quickly " i have a black belt in Martial arts i dont really know that many languages, and my holodeck simulation hours are 50 when i am doing my sims i am chief and the ship is surrounded by 10 Borg cubes and 50 romulan warbirds, the stat of the ship is main power is down and i am on reserve power. Yes sir i have had combat training sir "Good cadet, thats what i wanted to hear" Daya turned back to the console momentarily, then tapped his comm badge. "Daya to admiral Drew, permission to engage in a quick drill with my cadet" <tag Drew> <tag Daya>
[Sickbay, USS Hanson]
"Yes Ma'am." was all Alesia said to the Lt. Cmdrs. mention of her leg. She had a tendency to forget about it, even with the limp. It only meant she had to try harder to retain her position and rank among the others but it gave her something to strive for as well.
Alesia was chuckling inwardly as they entered sickbay finally, the faltering turbolifts, having taken them everywhere but sickbay, appeared to have minds of their own, depositing the crew wherever they felt like.
"That sure was interesting." Alesia said as the doors to sickbay opened to admit them.
The main area appeared empty, which was fine. "I don't mind waiting." she replied to the Lt. Cmdrs. comment. "Well - if we don't find anyone soon, we can put this off until later. As a part of the medical profession, you probably have already perfected avoiding doctors I bet."
She really wanted to get to her own department and eventually the Lt. Cmdr. made the suggestion only to be interrupted by the appearance of the doctor.
[20 mins later, Sickbay, USS Hanson]
Alesia had a clean bill of health, but was going to be required to have physical therapy a couple times a week to build up the muscles of her leg. It was a good thing that the Lt. Cmdr. was patient because Alesia wasn't one to just sit and listen, she had question after question for the doctor regarding her physical so she had the whole story before they left and finally headed for the labs.
"It's not that I distrust doctors." she explained as they headed out. "I like learning and asking questions is my way of doing that actively."
They were given the same tour of the ship by the turbolifts as they had been on the way to sickbay, taking several minutes to finally arrive at the place which she would call home for the training mission.
(tag Lt. Cmdr.)
It seemed that two things were now common on the USS Hanson. First, at one point or another someone will get shot, punched, stabbed, drugged, or poisoned. Second, once again there weren't any operation cadets. Jason had begun to feel rather miffed about this, but knew that he couldn't do anything about it. That didn't mean he couldn't help out some of the other instructors, but it would have been nice to have a cadet assigned to you. It made him wish that he was still on Conqueror with his wife and children.
"Admiral, the cadets have reported to Commander Hope and the other instructors," Jason reported," I've already contacted the dock master and he has cleared us to depart."
Pretty soon, the cadets would be arriving on the bridge and the mission would start. The mission was simple enough, but it wasn't everyday that you had the opportunity to view a star go nova.
"Admiral, it also seems that the turbolifts are all malfunctioning," Jason reported embarrassed for the engineering that allowed the bug to spread to the entire system," I'll work on getting them fixed, but I have yet to find where it originated."
Taking his seat on the bridge Drew thought over his recent conversation with Brelev. He was distressed to learn that she would be leaving the Hanson, he had come to rely a great deal on the Doctor, both for her medical abilities and her knack for command, which had served her well in the position of Second Officer. Now Drew would have to find a new medical officer and a new second officer who were just as capable.
Reading over one of the many reports that had been passed to him, Drew paid little attention to what was happening on the bridge. He was used to the command centre of a starship being a busy place when it came to departure time.
Hearing Daya’s request to start an introductory drill for the new security cadet, Drew gave his permission for the tactical chief to proceed. In Drew’s experience it was always a good idea to test the abilities of the new cadets as soon as possible, all too often the Hanson had been caught in a dangerous situation while out on a training voyage. Space, after all, was big and dangerous.
Drew looked over at the Ops station as Jason gave his report, confirming the Hanson’s readiness to depart, and the problem with the turbolifts.
“At least our new Engineer will get the chance to show us what she can do,” Drew said, as he put down his padd and looked around the bridge. By now most of the senior staff had returned, along with their cadets. He was pleased to see that the new cadet assigned to the helm was ready to begin.
“Take us out Mr. Jones, thrusters only,” Drew ordered, “once we are clear of the Starbase go to half impulse and set course for the Wilkes system, engage at warp four.”
Brad had barely taken a seat at the helm when Commander Reynolds informed the admiral that the cadets were on board.
“Take us out Mr. Jones, thrusters only,” Drew ordered, “once we are clear of the Starbase go to half impulse and set course for the Wilkes system, engage at warp four.”
Upon hearing the order Brad set about engaging the thrusters, first heading in the wrong direction and when he tried correcting it the ship just increased speed. It wasn't until his instructor leaned over the console and took over that the ship actually started heading in the right direction.
"Sorry sir, the ship's controls appear to be slightly faulty." Brad said feeling his cheeks flush with embarrasment. He'd just received his first official orders aboard a ship and he couldn't seem to get even the basics right.
He quickly brought up a screen to review what he had done, and was unable to see an error in his commands. According to the computer everything was running correctly. As he was doing this the ship left the spacedock enabling Brad to increase the speed to half impulse.
"Setting course for Wilkes system, estimated time of arrival 5 standard hours." Brad reported finally feeling relieved that something was going right.
[Bridge, USS Hanson]
Alesia and Lt. Cmdr. Manto spent time in the science labs and she felt as if she was home. She knew her way around the lab, had figured out where things were and the shortest routes to each lab from the main one, as well as to the labs in sickbay, should they be needed.
It wasn't long however, before she was seated at the science station on the bridge, itching for the mission to begin.
The chatter on the bridge finally broke by the Admirals voice.
“Take us out Mr. Jones, thrusters only,” Admiral Drew ordered, “once we are clear of the Starbase go to half impulse and set course for the Wilkes system, engage at warp four.”
She smiled and settled onto the stool, her hands resting comfortably on the console before her. The time had come ...
Commander Shinsei tapped the panel, as if she were knocking on a door, to get the attention of Cadet Currell. Konal walked in to see the following dialog transgress.
"Oh - hi, I'm Cadet Currell, I'm the science officer"
"Nice to meet you, and you are in my chair..." Crystal smiled. For a first day, it was amazing the Cadets were even finding the bridge with the turbolift trouble, let alone their positions.
The Cadet blushed, apologized, and excused herself.
"The science station is over there," Crystal said, pointing across the bridge. She noticed Konal enter the bridge. The main nav console was subsequently occupied by a Mr. Jones, the navigations Cadet.
Konal walked onto the bridge just as the Admiral gave the orders to disconnect from the station and set a course. Konal made her way to the science station as the docking mechanism released. She winked at Crystal as she passed, silently thanking her for the help.
"Have you ever been on a starship bridge before? I mean, a real one, not a holographic one?" It had seemed like forever since she had been in the academy that she didn't remember if the training missions were their first experience on a real ship
<Alesia>
The line of questioning wasn't meant to belittle Alesia, especially after her error... but if one was going to grade the student, one needed to know their level of knowledge.
"We have just departed, and we need to calibrate the sensors. I trust, with your training, you know what to do. We'll switch roles for a bit. You tell me what to do, and I will follow your orders." Cadet Currell looked amused.
"Oh - and don't forget, working on a ship involves working with others from other departments as well. Don't stop yourself from asking others when you need help with their expertise."
Konal took a few steps back, rubbed her stiff neck ridges- that were sore in her older age - and opened her arms in a gesture that said "Tell me where to begin."
