At long last, the Hanson was safely back in port, and she required little repairs at that. That on its own was quite remarkable, but even more so were the good spirits of the senior staff.
After the had a few days to unwind, the day of days had finally come for the cadets that served on Hanson's mission. Nervously, but smartly dressed, the cadets sat on the front row of the large hall on Conqueror. Hanson's senior staff, as usual sat on stage, where S'reena sat to Drew's right, while their newly assigned counselor sat on his left.
Clearing his throat, to get the attendees' attention, Drew walked up to the microphone at the stand that had been set up for the occasion once more. Originally, one of the senior staff had suggested holding the ceremony on a boat on the holodeck, but S'reena had argued heatedly against that, and in the end had gotten her way. There was just no way she was going to go aboard a boat that floated on water, no matter how assured safety would be.
"Welcome all," Drew's voice rang through the silent hall, "it is a pleasure to welcome you all to this graduation ceremony." His voice echoed through the hall, then finally died as he stopped speaking.
S'reena sniggered softly as she saw her CO peer at his notes. Even after all this time, he still didn't remember his usual speech, but this time he sort of had an excuse. After all, he'd been under a lot of stress last mission. She leaned in to Westgate. "He's not usually this forgetful," she whispered, earning herself a glare from Drew, who naturally had caught her whisper. She flashed a grin back at him.
Drew turned back to the crowd, and started off his list of graduates. "And last but not least, Paul Hatchet," he called off, beckoning the cadet forward. "Cadet Hatchet has performed outstandingly during a very difficult mission," Drew went on, "thus earning this graduation at the rank of ensign." He held out his hand to the newly graduated and promoted officer. "Congratulations, Ensign Hatchet!"
