Sloan slowly looked at him, his face calming slightly. "Now, focus on the problem. Our main problem is a leak of the plasma coolant. You have to find a way to seal that leak. Now what can you do about that?"
Sloan inhaled deeply and the fresh air, though hot and acrid, was like heaven to him. He straightened, though he visibly shyed from the still smoldering ship engineer. Sloan looked again at the console, and tried to get his bearings.
"Unidentified damage the the ventral side of the ship has caused the main plasma coolant system to go off line. Since the primary EPS junctions are in the same location, it's causing plasma surges to flow back into the core. The leaks into open space are about the only thing keeping it from going critical." Sloan tapped a number of options on console, and turned to the ships engineer, concern for the repair clouding the memories of his violence toward the cadet. "There must be some way to stop the leak: It just seems too severe. Coolant is flooding the compartment beneath the core and venting into space. The incoming flow is literally sucking air. Unless we can reroute the path of the flow, we'll need the biggest bike-patch ever made." Sloan shared a look of determination with both the engineer, who's own diagnostic's grim results had turned his fury into cold fear, and his Commander, who seemed so terribly far away.

Elal sat in Astrometrics. He was still miffed, although never would admit it, over the showdown with that Sloan character. One of these days he would show Commander Manto... if only she realized what he had to offer.
The screen blinked on a star chart zoomed into the sector of space the Hanson shared with the Maxwell. The indicator marked the Maxwell's warp signature. Elal had aimed the forward sensor array to read ion emissions in order to pinpoint the position. Off to the side, a counter showed the structural integrity of the freighter as a function of its warp output. It was slowly fading, but the Vulcan's judgment was clouded by raw emotion, and he didn't alarm anyone as he should have.
=/\= Computer, location of Commander Manto =/\=
~/\~ Commander Manto is in the Counseling Office ~/\~
Elal growled at the response. "Of course she is, always leaving the work to me, isn't she!"
~/\~ Please restate the question ~/\~
Elal ignored the computer's attempt to comprehend his outward expression of inner thoughts. He felt used, or misused rather, and did not appreciate his piddly existence in Astrometrics. His aspirations to be an instructor someday were constantly thwarted by Cadets that were much younger than he. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time, at least that's what Elal would say if one asked him. He is fully capable of doing many things relating to science. It was only logical that he be given a chance to do them first.
Knowing that Commander Manto was in the counseling office, Elal headed to the bridge. Figuring he would man the science station in her absence, he hoped in an ill-fated attempt that he could regain some self-esteem, if not the compliments of his immediate in command.
The bridge was busy, but Elal found the science console empty, to his delight. He occupied the seat before the console, and tapped it out of sleep mode.
*PASSWORD DENIED*
He slammed the console, gaining the stares of other officers. It would not have been so bad had he not been a Vulcan, but the clear lack of self discipline was alarming to the rest of the bridge crew. One of which, when Elal wasn't looking, paged Konal to return to the bridge to handle the situation.

"Unless we can reroute the path of the flow, we'll need the biggest bike-patch ever made," Sloan said, with a look of determination.
Patching the hole was probably beyond their current capabilities. "Very good, Cadet. One principle you must learn with ship's systems is this: if you can't repair, then re-route. Most primary systems, particularly critical ones such as these, have a secondary or back-up systems. If you can make use of those, we may be able to restore the coolant system."
The kid's performance was exemplary given the circumstances. The circumstances were even throwing Noah for a loop. Even lesser-experienced officers would have caved under the pressure the cadet was under. Noah was impressed.

[Commander Hope]
"What's taking them so long?" S'reena exclaimed. Klang and her were already on the way to Engineering to see what the problem may be. The security console showed weapon activations in Engineering, and it was her sincere hope that Sloan and Bates were still alive. If they lost another Cadet during a mission, Starfleet would not look well upon the Hanson crew.
"Bonner and Youngblood, forget the orders to meet me on the bridge. Head to main engineering, on the double." the combadge made a tweak sound as it turned off.
"Alright, Cadet Klang, let's pick up the pace. Something funny is going on. We haven't found too many bodies, which means either the crew was kidnapped, or they are all aboard the ship someplace. Perhaps for protection."
"Do you have any thoughts what could be going on?" she asked as they jogged to the nearest turbolift.
<Klang>
Noting that the turbolift was offline, and not knowing where the next nearest was, the Romulan commander pealed away the plating to its side. "We'll have to take the maintenance shaft. Let's go!"
She jumped in first, Klang following. "It's getting noticeably warmer. We must be nearing the warp core." Feeling ahead, with only a wrist light to guide them, the two found themselves at an access panel. S'reena felt the panel.
"It's warm. Hold on, I hear voices... shh!" They listened, but the voices gave way to a metallic clunking sound. "I say we go in, but slowly. Follow my lead." She was very protective of the Cadet, even though he was a Klingon and he was a Security Officer. The age difference between them gave her a motherly attitude toward the recruits. That's not to say she wasn't hard on them.
The two pushed the panel outward, and placed it down quietly on the floor. S'reena stepped out, helping Klang get himself out of the shaft afterward.
<Klang. Describe what happens when we get into Main Engineering. Be descriptive please.>

Most primary systems, particularly critical ones such as these, have a secondary or back-up systems. If you can make use of those, we may be able to restore the coolant system."
Sloan tapped furiously at the console, as a deep groan and shudder tore through engineering. "It looks to me," the cadet said, "like the backup system was damaged as well. Do you have tertiary systems, an auxiliary backup?"
The engineer looked at him, almost indignantly. The captain, her phaser still pointed at Bates, scoffed loudly over the din of the failing core. "We're a trading vessel! We're not equipped with tertiary backups. Now fix it!"
Sloan was miffed, but wasn't about to show it; too much. He pointed at a section of ships schematic on the console. "What's this?" The engineer of the ship glanced over.
"That's the plasma expulsion sump. It's used to vent warp plasma feedback from the nacelles."
Sloan studied the schematic closely. "These bulkheads are undamaged. Can we route coolant through the sump?"
For the first time since the run in, the ships engineer dropped his steely disinterest in Sloan's work. He studied the schematic as well. "It's...possible. They share the same conduits. Reroute the auxiliary sump to draw plasma from the lower deck. I'll flood the zone with plasma coolant."
Sloan did as he was ordered. In a few moments, the shuddering of the core began to subside, as coolant peeled back the increasing heat and stress. "Warp core stabilizing," he announced, "we're still leaking drive plasma from that port nacelle, but the core overload seems to have been averted." He shared a look with his captors. "You're welcome."
In the corner of his eye, he thought he saw Commander Bates' stern expression flash into a smile. Just for a moment, anyway.

"Warp core stabilizing," Sloan announced, "we're still leaking drive plasma from that port nacelle, but the core overload seems to have been averted." He shared a look with his captors. "You're welcome."
Noah smiled very briefly at the Cadet's success. The kid was learning quickly.
"Captain," the Engineer began, "Maybe we've been wrong about these two. Maybe they really are from Starfleet. They just averted a core breach for us, and there's been no attempts at foulplay on their part either."
"Perhaps you're right," the Captain said, and lowered the phaser rifle, which all the way had been trained on Noah. "But I've got my eye on you," she said to Noah. "I'm Elizabeth Reynolds, Captain of the Maxwell. This is my Chief Engineer, Barry Tate, and my helmsman, Kate Yates," she said, gesturing to the two in turn.
"Well, you already know who we are," Noah said, recalling having introduced himself when they were first held at phaser-point, and mentioning Sloan's name in the midst of it all.
"Is he really a Cadet?" Reynolds asked, gesturing to Sloan, "And would that make you his Instructor or something?"
"Yes to both," Noah replied. "We're assigned to a training vessel, the Hanson. It's waiting not too far away. You may have noted the presence of our other teams. Shall we work now on your failing structural integrity?"
Captain Reynolds nodded. "Please do. You probably noticed we have hull breaches all over the place."
"We did. Cadet, get working on their structural integrity. Figure out why it's failing, and how to fix it," Noah said to Sloan.
<Tag Sloan>
"Wouldn't you be better capable of that...Commander Bates, as I recall?" Reynolds asked.
"Yes, but he won't learn as much that way as he would doing it himself. Trust me, Captain, I know what I'm doing. And I'm here in case he runs into any trouble."

[Commander Hope]
Noises could be heard in the room. The two brushed themselves off, undoing the small creases in their uniforms created by crawling the last few metres of the access tunnel.
S'reena Hope and Klang rounded a bulkhead corner, and came face to face with a handful of officers, among which Bates and Sloan worked.
"I see you have been spying on us." The phaser rifle repowered and Captain Maxwell found her mark on the Klingon cadet. The fact that the Commander was a Romulan did not help the matter either, and the tenseness in the room once again rose.
"I suppose you are going to say that's he's a Cadet too." All of Commander Bates's work in gaining the trust of the Maxwell crew went for naught as diplomacy once again gave way to force.
"Captain, the few internal sensors we have remaining show two intruder life signs inside the ship." The Maxwell's engineering officer awaited her orders.
"Send the security to take them. If they try anything funny, do not hesitate to demobilise them."
"Youngblood," S'reena hissed. She had told him to make his way to Engineering, but now the security team of the Maxwell will be hunting him, and he has no clue. Bonner and he were in grave danger. It was clear that this cowboy Captain did not trust very easily.
"Leave that alone," the Captain yelled at Sloan as he tapped a console. While his intentions were good- trying to enhance the structural integrity, Captain Reynolds suspected sabotage. Instead of validating her suspicions, she chose to believe her instinct.
Bates and Sloan once again tried to convince the Captain of the truthfulness of their statement. Klang, finding himself to be the first target if the Captain chose to shoot, pleaded with the group as well.
<TAG Everyone In Main Engineering>
Amidst the convincing please, Commander Hope tapped her combadge. "Youngblood... Get to Main Engin..." but she was cut off by Barry Tate, who slapped her across the face. It was not enough to knock the Romulan Commander to the ground, but it created enough time for the Helmsman, Kate Yates, to take her combadge.
"Good work you two." the phaser rifle was still pointed. The high pitched noise emanated through all conversation, reminding everyone what was at stake throughout the entirety of the ordeal.
"So - you DO have spies on board. We'll just see how far they get. In the meantime, Mr. Tate, erect a forcefield around our pirates here." The irrational notion that the Hanson crew members were spies, or pirates, landed them inside of a high powered containment. The work they ahd already done was chalked up as just luring the Maxwell crew into a false sense of security. "You're not going to fool us!"
S'reena spoke to the two engineers. "Hopefully Youngblood and Bonner can get to us before they get to them." she said in a worried, but quiet, voice. Just in case, you three are engineers... try to figure out how to get us out of here." The space they were contained in was a 10 x 10 corner of engineering, with no computer consoles present. It would take ingenuity to get past the forcefield. Hopefully Yahnie and Jay would come through first.

They were right back where they started. Except they weren't inside a force field last time. There would be no regaining their trust a second time, most likely.
S'reena spoke to the two engineers. "Hopefully Youngblood and Bonner can get to us before they get to them." she said in a worried, but quiet, voice. Just in case, you two are engineers... try to figure out how to get us out of here."
Noah turned his chair to face Sloan. "Any ideas, Cadet? Consider anything we currently have with us, no matter how unuseful it may seem at first."

Marines always had to make an entrance, Crystal thought, watching Methos and his two followers, half fondly and half bemused. Once he gave his explanation, however, that both communications and engineering were down, she was completely worried. The Chief Engineer was temporarily off the ship, which meant...what did it mean, precisely? There were still plenty of other officers on the ship who were perfectly capable of fixing the turbolift.
Crystal hit her own commbadge, not because she thought Methos had crawled through jeffries tubes for no reason, but because if there was going to be a chance that hers would work Crystal was going to find that out before doing anything else. Unfortunately it didn't work.
βHave you informed Engineering yet of the situation?β Crystal asked, suddenly worried that someone else would have to go crawling through the tubes. A fear that was apparently justified, as Methos replied that he had come up to the bridge first thing. Crystal couldn't fault him for doing so, but she did wish he'd sent one of his marines off to speak with engineering.
Chances were they were aware of it, something as major as the turblolift system couldn't just fail without anyone noticing, but Crystal wasn't going to rely on how things usually worked out. For all she really knew, all of engineering could have been kidnapped by Vulcans as a joke, and therefore wouldn't be fixing anything. Not likely, but stranger things had happened. Not that Crystal could even think up a stranger scenario than that, let alone cite a real one, but she was sure that sometime in the galaxy's lifetime, something stranger had happened. At least once.
βI'm going to go to Engineering then,β Crystal said, half-checking with Drew at the same time. He didn't object, and did, in fact, nod his acceptance. Crystal traveled the jeffries tubes, until she came out in engineering. People seemed to be fairly busy, but Crystal kind of assumed that was normal engineering behavior.
They didn't even see surprised to see Crystal crawling out of the jeffries tubes, possibly because they didn't notice. βDo you know communications and the turbolift are down?β she asked.
βYes,β an ensign replied. βWe're almost finished fixing them.β
βOh,β Crystal answered, feeling rather useless. βCan I help with anything?β
βDo you have any engineering experience?β
βExperience?β Crystal asked, just to make sure. After all, she didn't have terribly much in the way of classroom knowledge. βYes.β
The ensign obviously was just as hesitant about her response as Crystal herself was, as he just shrugged and turned back to her panel. It took a few moments before Crystal realized he had expected her to follow him. By that point, however, he was turning away from his console with a triumphant grin on his face. =/\=Ensign Reed to Admiral Drew.=/\=
=/\=Admiral Drew here.=/\=
=/\=Communications have been restored, sir. As well as the turbolifts.=/\=
βThank you,β Crystal said.
βOh, I didn't do much. Just monitored the status of the actual repair teams from here,β Ensign Reed replied.
βStill, thank you. Do you know what it was that caused the failure?β
βA broken relay on deck five. We could still talk to most of the rest of the ship, and the bridge could communicate with the first four decks. So if you'd wanted to, for example, talk to someone in the officer's mess, you could have. But when the relay overloaded it caused most of the directly connecting ones to do the same. It shouldn't happen again, sir.β
Crystal smiled slightly, as the ensign went from formal to almost chatty and then back to formal in his answer. βThat'd probably be for the best.β
She was rewarded by a smile in return from Reed. βI'll certainly do what I can.β
Crystal left engineering and returned via the turbolifts this time, which was a welcome change from her voyage down. It also took half the time.

It seems our communicators are defective or were in an area where we canβt transmit or receive.β βIt seems from my tricorder that there are life forms aboard besides our own.β βCadet Bonner, Have you studied the layout of the Maxwell? We need to find our way to engineering without coming across intruders. Do you have any suggests?β Yahnie figured that the Cadet would make a suggestion that would get them there as quick as possible.

Konal left the counseling office, feeling a little better than when she arrived. Doctor Westgate's laid back attitude always eased the tension in the room and made Konal open up without her even realizing it. He was a kind man. He was probably the only one on the ship who understood her.
Commander Hope understood her as well, she realized in thought as she made her way back to the bridge. The Commander seemed unapproachable at times, though. It wasn't that she had a barrier erected or anything, it was just that she was never around. When she was around, it was when they were both inundated with cadets to look after and instruct. It wasn't the ideal setting for socializing with peers. Down time generally meant sitting on Starbase Conqueror, eating eclairs and the likes of which. She preferred to be alone most of the time, venturing into the cafe only when she grew tired of her own sighs.
The bridge had been eventful. Communications had been off for awhile, but Operations declared them to be revitalized when she returned. She didn't even know they were off. Hopefully she didn't miss anything.
Apparently she did, though. Elal sat at the science console, visibly holding back an anger that could have punched a hole clear through any bulkhead. He was punching away at the locked console.
"It must have reset itself after the outage." Konal said calmly behind the enraged Vulcan. He was scaring her a bit. "It needs a security code to reactivate it." Elal had originally thought that Commander Manto had specifically locked him out.
"I see." was all he said. A greenish vein on the side of his head was visible. "I was attempting to assist while you were in the counseling office."
"Who told you I was there?" she didn't mention it to anyone.
"I couldn't find you. I queried the computer, and it said you were there. Then it went offline, so I came to the bridge." It was the truth. Of course, Elal left out the part about being paranoid that the Commander was in some way out to get him... or that the Cadets were purposefully making him look bad. Those were only entries in private logs; not for everyone to see.
"Here you go, it should be fine now. I'm going to go see how the sensor relay is doing down near engineering. Call me if you need me."
Elal nodded in acknowledgment as Konal left.

After Crystal left the Bridge to go to Engineering, Methos had the two Marines who accompanied him to the bridge post on either side of the turbolift doors. Methos then took to one of the empty consoles on the back side of the bridge.
He had configured it to be a tactical auxillary. As he stood there looking at the scans of the Maxell, he noticed that four of the away team was clustered in Main Engineering while the other two were apparently headed that way. He decided to concentrate on the four in Engineering.

S'reena started to like their current situation less and less. Not only had their plan to help this crew gone wrong, the remainder of the Maxell crew had actually turned against them. She had seen Bates try to convince their captain but had also seen him fail. Not only that, but his cadet seemed very nervous, despite his instructor's praise and encouragement.
"Thoughts?" she queried, as she rubbed her left temple. The blow to the head she had received had briefly stunned her, but hadn't been enough to knock her unconscious. It had, however, given her an immense headache. "We need to convince them that we are who we say we are." She nodded towards Sloan. "While you work on their warpcore, see if you can remodulate a carrier wave of some sort and send an SOS to the Hanson. Bates, assist him where you can. Perhaps he could have a fiddle with that chair of yours while you claim a wheel jam or something?"
She turned to Klang, who didn't look too thrilled at being captured. "There's no shame in capture Cadet Klang," she told the Klingon, "only if we remain captured and I have no intention of doing so. See if you can assist Sloan in sending out that SOS, but at all cost shut down that warp core before we get blown to smithereens."
From the corner of her eyes, the Romulan watched Captain Reynolds pace back and forth, while her crew kept their phasers aimed at the Starfleet Officers. Slowly, she rose to her feet, stretching her legs as her muscles started to cramp up. "Captain Reynolds," she called, hoping the woman would look their way, "Commander Bates spoke the truth. We are here to help. I am Commander S'reena Hope, first officer of the Starfleet training vessel USS Hanson. My ship is out there, commanded by Vice Admiral Paul Drew. Check your records, I'm sure they'll verify our identity."

Noah turned his chair to face Sloan. "Any ideas, Cadet? Consider anything we currently have with us, no matter how useless it may seem at first."
Sloan checked his person cautiously, praying he wouldn't alert the suspicions of the derelict ship's crew. To Bates, he whispered, "We've both still got our communicators, and I've got my tricorder." Bates nodded in the affirmative.
"We've got good materials, cadet. Now how should we go about implementing them?"
Sloan thought hard on the question. The ship shuddered and shook, straining against itself as the structural integrity fields continued their downward spiral. Looking at his captured compatriots, his thoughts returned to basic training...and the Starfleet Survival manual.
"The communicators, sir" Sloan said in a sudden, hushed tone. "if I remember my survival training correctly, it's possible to modify a communicator to form a persona shield around yourself."
"Yes," Bates admitted, "but only for a few moments. There's no way the krellium cells can maintain it for any length of time."
"Granted," Sloan countered, "but what if we modulated the field to the same frequency of this forcefield. With their structural integrity failing, this field can't be operating at full power. If we daisy chain these communicators together, I'm confident we can breach this forcefield. It would only be momentary, and maybe just big enough for one person, but it's worth a try."
"Agreed," Bates said, "but who's going to go through?"
Sloan considered the problem. Even as he turned it over, his hands were at work, modifying the communicators with the help of his tricorder, as discretely as possible.

[Elizabeth Reynolds]
"Someone shut that Commander up. I'm getting rather sick of her ordering her crew around." seeing nobody move to strike, she addressed the Commander's statements.
"I have no doubt you have some buoy out there designed to relay your good intentions." The trade ship Captain was not about to believe anything these Starfleet spies were saying. They were going to get their shipment to its destination, whether or not this Starfleet crew was interfering.
=/\= Captain, we have the intruders. What would you like us to do with them? =/\= Reynold's frown turned into a coy smile. Without taking her gaze away from Commander Hope she replied. =/\= Bring them to me.=/\=
The security officer complained momentarily about the logistics of shoving them down three decks of shafts to the ship's main engineering department, but the Captain had made up her mind, and demanded they be brought to Engineering.
She turned and paced a few more times. Turning the corner, out of range of the Starfleet spies, she convened with her first officer.
"All we have to do is make sure they are all here, then we will beam them out into space. I don't like this one bit. Starfleet must be on to our transport mission."
With only a few nods from the first officer, and nothing constructive to add, she decided a course of action. "Yates," she called to the navigations officer. "Are our internal transporters online?"
Yates acknowledge in the affirmative. Reynolds smiled again. "As soon as you get our two captives down here into the forcefield, beam them all out to space. We have no need for them, and by the time their ship finds anything, we'll be long gone. We still have that ion trail masking system we purchased working. Their poor engineering 'student' helped fix it. Fools." They shared a small chuckle with each other as they prepared for their dirty work.
"I think by accusing them of wrongdoing, it is keeping us from getting looked at with a finer toothed comb. They probably thought we went insane. Let's keep this ruse going. We cannot let them know what is in our cargo hold. At any cost. At all costs. We just need our warpcore fixed"
She rounded the corner, into audible and visible view of the Commander and her away team. Pacing again, she waited for the return of her security team.
"You" she pointed to Cadet Sloan. "We need you to fix the warp core. If you do not, we will shoot her. When it's fixed, you can all leave." The Commander didn't look like she was in the mood to be shot. The forcefield came down long enough for Sloan to emerge. "Try anything funny, and you won't even know what hit you."

The Commander didn't look like she was in the mood to be shot. The forcefield came down long enough for Sloan to emerge. "Try anything funny, and you won't even know what hit you."
Sloan frowned. His work with the communicators seemed promising, but now his plans seemed foiled. He shared a look with Commander Bates. As quietly and discretely as he could, he slipped the two communicator badges into the back of his chair and whispered "see what you can do with them."
Exiting the corner, the forcefield materialized again, trapping his fellow crewman once more. The Cadet warily made his way to the engineering console, joining the ships engineer. "Reinitializing the warp core with the structural integrity field failing is a pretty bad idea," Sloan said to the engineer, "I'll see about repairing the field emitters."
The engineer laughed bitterly, "And let you take control of that security force field? Not on your life, cadet. I'll worry about the SIF, you get that core stabilized."
Sloan began his chore, worrying about ships systems and the condition of the power grid. "Two-thirds of your antimatter injectors are off line: fused. I'll have to adjust the intermix."
With the ships engineer eying him suspiciously, Sloan crept behind the warp core and began adjusting the deuterium intermix ratios. He was hoping to buy time. Either the rest of his crew would make their way to main engineering, or Bates could find a way to bypass the force field. Either way, there must be a way out. Sloan kept a close eye on the coolant line running next to the EPS conduits behind him. At the slightest provocation, he was prepared to cut the line with his plasma torch: certainly no solution to their problem, but a suitably violent distraction if need be. Now, it was a matter of how long he could get away with stalling for time.

While Methos was watching the Engineering section of the Maxell, he noticed that the ships Structural Integrity Fields were slowly getting worse.
"Admiral, Structural Integrity of the Maxell is slowly failing. It seems that the vast majority of it's crew are in Main Engineering, as are four of the Away Team," he informed Drew.
He then turned to watching the Maxell's crew that were going around the ship. He saw a couple walking around by their cargo holds. They walked in one and looked as if they were checking on the cargo. They then walked out of that one and walked toward another one. They got to the door and disappeared. Methos double checked his reading and saw that they said the same thing.
"Crystal, It appears that there is a dampening field around one of the Maxell's Cargo Holds. Is there some way to by-pass it?

S'reena exchanged a worried glance with Bates and Youngblood. Now Youngblood and his cadet were captured as well, the tides were turning against them and they were running out of time. "I hope Sloan remembers his orders," S'reena whispered, then fell silent as Reynolds threatened the poor cadet with shooting his boss.
The Romulan had no intention of getting shot whatsoever and wisely didn't respond to the thread. Instead, she somewhat cowered in a corner, desperately trying to appear harmless. Surprisingly, they had only taken her combadge and phaser, but hadn't thought about her other weapon. However, reaching toward it would draw unwanted attention onto herself, something she wanted to avoid.
"Yahni, were you successful in reaching the Hanson?" she asked quietly, as she regained her footing. The deck in engineering was slippery and she was still experiencing a bad headache which made her feel nauseous. Sudden movements made her immediate surroundings spin. "You don't happen to have any aspirin would you boys?" she asked, deliberately calling them boys in an attempt to lighten the grim mood. Sloan had to succeed or they would die a slow death in space, something the Romulan hoped to avoid. And aside from calling them boys, she was the only female in their little group.
"We outnumber them, for crying out loud," she sighed, "Bates, can't you get us out of this forcefield? Sloan will keep their attention from us with his tinkering. Once we get out you move to help him. Yahni, you and Bonner overpower one guard, Klang you see to the other while I tend to Reynolds."

"I thought you'd never ask, Commander," Bates said in a low voice. "Yahnie, Bonner, Klang, move to block me from view. Commander, I'll need your help. I can overload the force field, but what I'd use to do that in out of my reach from a seated position." He gesturing behind him to the back of the chair.
S'reena nodded and came around. "What do I do?" she asked quietly.
"This large portion here," he said, reaching around to gesture to a large block of equipment at the bottom of the chair, "can be mostly exposed by removing the casing. Push up and in near the bottom of the back side."
As quietly as she could, she removed the panel and laid it aside. "What next?"
"Do you see a power conduit about 3 centimeters wide running the length of it?" After she nodded, he continued. "That's provides power to the transporter unit I have built into this thing. I can program the power cell to transfer all the power it can muster into the transporter. Then if we can somehow sever the conduit we can jab the live conduit into the force field, which should overload it fairly quickly. I could try smashing the control panel on the arm of the chair, and you could use one of the shards to cut the conduit. We'd have to do this quickly though. We aren't likely to be very quiet."
He finally looked her in the eye. "Shall we?"

<Aboard the Maxwell> <Engineering>
Lieutenant Commander Youngblood made his way down to engineering along with Cadet Bonner. While going down a corridor what they thought was secured, they were captured by intruders. They were brought down to engineering where the others of the away team were captured also. Yahnie had spoke with the First Officer and informed her that they had communication blackout by a dampening field on the Maxwell and was unable to contact the Hanson. Yahnie went over to the guard that was close by him and over took him with one of his Native Indian holds where he was taught as a boy. Yahnie listen to the plan that the Commander Bates had been speaking about and made a suggestion. βCommander Bates Cadet Klang and I seem to be the strongest here and we can do this quietly to get that power conduit out.β

[Captain Elizabeth Reynolds - USS Maxell]
"Place them into the forcefield with the rest of the scum." The Hanson's security officer left behind a couple of wounded guards as he was placed into the forcefield. "I'll be sure they shoot you first if it comes to it." It was not an empty threat. Bonner and Youngblood seemed to understand this.
A guard raised his weapon at the Maxell Captain's command. "And you, Mr. Sloan." she had ascertained almost everyone's name by now, aside from the newly arrived security guards, "I watched you work a lot faster than this the last time you were tinkering. You have five minutes or the Lieutenant here has orders to fire. I will not tolerate your insolence."
The fidgeting of the officers behind the forcefield went unnoticed for a few minutes as Elizabeth's crew was busy watching the Cadet while also attempting to solve the warp core problem from other angles of attack.
"Captain, I think the warp core is coming back online," The whooshing sound of the magnetic couplers stabilizing the antimatter injectors could be heard, rhythm increasing each passing second. The ominous glow of the drive in the damaged engineering gave new light to the surroundings.
She grinned an evil grin. "Place Sloan back into the containment field and beam them out into space. We have no need for them anymore." She turned around to gloat her latest victory to the Hanson crew, but it was too late. A blunt force had hit her in the upper shoulder on her left side, causing her to drop to the floor. The last thing she remembered was seeing her security officer lying in front of her, eyes closed, before she too blacked out.

"Do it," S'reena told Youngblood and Klang, "and as swiftly as possible." As soon as the forcefield was down, she saw Klang and his instructor move off, while Bonner circled the other direction. Bates wheeled forward and knocked down the security person, while S'reena herself went for Reynolds.
"Are we secure?" she called, looking around. "Bonner, assist me in tying these three up. Bates, assist Sloan!"
The Romulan looked around to find Sloan hunched under a console, his tongue sticking out between his teeth as he worked in utter concentration. "Sloan are you all right?" she called out, her concern for the young man showing. One didn't always get a weapon pointed at you, and while S'reena was now pretty much used to being held at gun point by now, she was quite certain it'd be a shock for a cadet.
"Cadets when we get back I want you all to schedule a session with Counselor Westgate. And I'll not accept objections. Bates, Youngblood, you two as well." She didn't mention that she was already scheduled to see the counselor. Now that they were free again, reports would need to be sent back to the Hanson, as well as their now prisoners interrogated.
"Youngblood, work with Bates on getting a console operational from here and send a signal to the Hanson informing them we're back in control of this vessel." Just then, Reynolds woke up and moaned softly. The Romulan kneeled beside her and attempted to make her a little more comfortable in her bonds. "Nobody likes to be held at gunpoint captain," she started, "and you should know that Romulans especially don't take kindly to that. Especially not this Romulan..." She paused, regarding the human woman more closely. "Why didn't you accept our help?" she fired her first question, "your resistance has made us suspicious of you now and I will have my security chief look into your cargo just to be safe."
She looked up at Youngblood and gave him the go-ahead to have a look. "You attacked three starfleet officers and three cadets," she added, "Starfleet nor the Federation will take kindly on that, especially after you sent out a distress signal and we responded to your SOS. What do you have to say to that?"

[Captain Elizabeth Reynolds - USS Maxell]
The Captain coughed wincing in pain as it made her sore shoulder rise and fall. It looked hopeless, but it would be hopeless for everyone if they didn't get moving relatively soon.
The fact that the Commander was going to check the cargo forced the Captain into explaining a few things. She looked at her first officer, then at her pilot, Yates. She then looked to Commander Hope. "If we are late with our delivery, we are going to have more serious problems than a phaser pointing at us, Commander." She felt contempt for this Hanson crew. "Leave us be, get on with your training tactics. I'm telling you, you do not want to be involved with this."
[Commander Konal Manto - USS Hanson]
Konal did a double-take and the console that started beeping erratically. "Admiral, I think there are incoming ships. Unless my console is acting screwy again." Elal confirmed the findings on the secondary console.
"Two Cardassian Hideki fighters, closing in on our starboard side. Their weapons are powering.
"Shields up," Drew exclaimed. He did not yell, nor show fear, yet his tone gave the sense of urgency.
The bridge shook.
"Direct hit to the nacelle... no damage. Shields holding" Konal wished that more senior members were aboard.
"Shields holding," Elal replied, repeating Konal's assessment.
"Hail them." the Paul Drew said. The operations officer acknowledged. "No answer."
"Defensive posture Alpha-Psi-three," Crystal operated the maneuver. She was already in the process of dodging further attacks.
The second ship fired, and sparks flew. "They hit our shield generators. We are down to 68% output efficiency."
"Send engineering to fix it." He remained thoughtful during a barrage of hits. Crystal was doing her best to dodge them, and tactical was firing back when able.
"We have a shuttle out there." Admiral Drew's thoughts turned to it. "I suspect this has something to do with the Freighter. Crystal, continue the defensive posture, but take us to the Maxell."
[Captain Elizabeth Reynolds - USS Maxell]
"...and If you don't let us go, I am sure they will take our cargo and kill us all." It was the truth, and Elizabeth hoped that Commander Hope would listen. "Get me out of these bonds. You are going to get us all killed!" Her pleasant storytelling returned to vitriol and anger. "I would remain out of the cargo bay as well. The radiation levels there are higher than you'll be able to block with a simple space suit. We had to line the walls with a special material... which is probably why you didn't detect anything in the first place." Reynolds didn't defend her argument, making one wonder if she were telling the truth this time.
"I suggest you at least let my pilot go. Warp drive is online, we need to get out of here!"

Noah wheeled himself over to Sloan. "You doing okay. kid?" he asked, for the first time able to hold a private conversation with the cadet.
<Sloan>
"Well, what we need to is manipulate the warp drive to send a pulsating signal. In old Earth terms, it's referred to as Morse Code, a series of shorter and longer pulses to represent letters and numbers, and therefore words. Can you think of any outputs we could manipulate to catch the attention of the Hanson?"
<Tag Sloan>
>>>Onboard Hanson
Meanwhile, onboard the Hanson, Lieutenant Brac was scrambling to keep the ship functioning properly.
"Damage to the shield generators!" Lieutenant Gleeson reported.
Brac hit his comm-badge. "Damage control teams to the primary shield generator. Redirect power to compensate."
"Aye, sir," Gleeson responded.
"Bridge to Engineering, we've got damage to the shield generators," came the unnecessary report. Brac was already well aware.
"We're already on it," he replied.
"I wish Bates was here," he said under his breath as he checked on the shields himself.
