It was 0600 hours on the USS Hepta. The crew were slowly filing in, most of them still half asleep. James was still drinking his first cup of coffee, trying to clear his mind for the upcoming briefing. Slowly but surely everyone has arrived and it was time to start. The door to the observation lounge swooshed shut and James stood up.
"Good morning. I'm sorry to pull you out of bed at this time, but we have been given our departure orders." A soft murmur of excitement mingled with grumpiness erupted among the assembled crew. James waited patiently for things to quiet down. "As I was saying, we have received our orders from Starfleet HQ and since the Captain is not entirely recovered yet, he has asked me to do the briefing."
James pressed a button and a strategic map of the Alpha and Beta quadrants appeared. "This is the tactical situation in Federation space today. The red dots resemble our starships," James said pointing at several red dots in the different star systems. "The Federation is still suffering from the aftermath of the Dominion War, although it has been over for several years. In fact we are suffering from more than just the aftermath of the Dominion War. In the last decade or so we have been attacked by basically every major force in the galaxy. First the Borg, then the Cardassians, the Dominion and even the Breen have participated to a modest extent. This leaves our borders vulnerable, more vulnerable than anyone at Starfleet HQ dares admit."
At this there was a small outburst of talk. The Cadets were looking nervously around. "Our forces, ladies and gentlemen, are spread out rather thinly as you can see." James pointed again at the red dots, who were rather spread out over an enormous area of space. "it's not so much the outside threats but more the threats from inside that keep harrassing us now, even in the core worlds. The fleet is spread out to thinly and pirates and smugglers seize their opportunities."
James pressed another button and the face of a young Vulcan male appeared. "A few days ago, the Federation Council received an official complaint from the Vulcan embassy. They have been dealing with an increasing pirate threat in the Vulcan system. They attack merchant ships and diplomatic vessels and all attempts of Vulcan security officials to capture the pirates or even to find a clue of who they are have been failures. A few days ago, this young Vulcan diplomat, T'Pok, son of the famous T'Kal, was killed during one of these raids. The Hepta is ordered to the Vulcan system to investigate and to stop these attacks."
James turned the viewer off and the lights went on. He surveyed the crew. They had a good bunch and a fresh load of Cadets. This one just might prove interesting. "Commander Chan, Captain Löhnen, please coordinate ship's security between your departments. Commander Nikmund, Commander Parker, Ops and Engineering need to find a way to detect the pirates. Vulcan Intell suggests they might have cloacking technology. Doctor Firestorm, as usual you are the one to keepus alive if things go wrong. Commander Bern, we may need some fancy flying, are you up to it?"
<TAG: Department Heads>
James nodded. Are there any questions?
<TAG: Officers, Cadets>
We have about two to three days before we arrive in the Vulcan system. That leaves us little time to prepare. Good luck. Dismissed!

Firestorm stretched his limbs yawning profoundly as the call came in to report for a briefing. He'd fallen asleep in sickbay, going over the backlog of reports as well as the physicals of both Commander O'Connor and Captain Edwards. Fortunately, both were deemed fit for active duty, though Wolfram had advised Edwards to take it as easy as duty permitted.
Now, he got himself a large mug of kitty-milk, placing a small plate in front of Copper, his copper furred little feline friend. The little cat had grown to her full size and now nearly a year old, the female cat rarely left her overgrown 'cousin's' size.
"Firestorm to bridge, I'm on my way. I'll be going past Wolfram's and Ballar's quarters to pick them up." Once he and Copper finished their 'breakfast', he picked up the little cat (for she had remained rather small for one of her species) and carried her along with him.
Fortunately for him the quarters of the two cadets were close to one another, so he first banged Wolfram's door and then Ballar's. "Wakey wakey!" he singsonged, and kept banging until two sleepy faces appear. "You've got 5 minutes to get dressed and get out here," he instructed them, "we've a briefing to attend to, and arriving late gives a very bad impression."
He chuckled as the two cadets darted back into their quarters and re-appeared smartly dressed less than 2 minutes later.
[At the briefing]
"Was the unfortunate Vulcan's katra saved?" Firestorm piped in, worried that the young man's soul would be lost forever. And how was he killed? If it was through unconvential and unknown means I'd like to examine the body. With permission of his family of course."
He gazed at both his cadets. "Might as well teach you two how to do a proper autopsy, mightn't I?"
(Wolfram, Ballar.....responses?)

Samantha Parker had arrived 12 hours late on the starbase conqueror. After the transport ship she had been onboard had had to be towed into the station after a problem with the power system which they had not had a replacement part onboard.
Sam quickly grabbed her stuff and moved out of one airlock onto the station and down the corridor to next airlock where the Hepta was docked. She had been looking forward to looking back around the large station that she had been back to in three years since she was a cadet. But that would have to wait until the next time the Hepta returned to the station.
She proceeded to her new quarters. The ship was quiet, but that was probably because it was the early hours of the morning. She arrived at her quarter a few moments later and dumped her bag in the corner of the room. Then she clasped onto the bed and closed her eyes. She hadn’t managed to get much sleep on that transport because every time she managed to get to sleep she woke up about thirty minutes later with back or neck pains. She guessed those uncomfortable seats weren’t designed for sleeping in, but the journey was only meant to last less than 6 hours, not 18 hours, so most passengers wouldn’t normally need to sleep in those seats.
=/\= All senior staff please report to briefing room =/\= came a voice over the communications system.
Sam groaned and opened her eyes starring up at the ceiling for a moment. Then she forced herself to sit up and tap her commbadge.
=/\= On my way =/\= She stood headed out of her quarters towards the briefing room.
On arrival she headed straight over to the replicator and order herself a cup of coffee to keep her wake. Then sat down in one of the empty seats. She listened to the briefing; taking sips of her coffee though out. As soon as she was given her orders her mind raced with ideas that could possible be used to let them see though a cloaking device.
Once the briefing was finished she looked around for commander Nikmund, the only problem is she didn’t know whom any of the crew where yet. From deductive reasoning it had to be one of two people in the room in yellow uniforms. She walked over to one of them, knowing that she had a 50:50 chance of getting the right one.
“I’m Commander Samantha Parker the new chief engineer,” she introduced, “Are you Commander Nikmund?”
<Commander Nikmund or Commander Chan>

Exiting the briefing room, Tiberian tapped Captain Lohnen on the shoulder. As he walked with him, he asked: "Sir, do you want me to prepare a team for possible boarding actions, or spend more time co-ordinating with security to repel possible incursions. I'll need to know what myself and my team should equip ourselves with"

Matthew Vayne reporting for Medical Training on the USS Hepta as ordered by Firestorm/Snowfall. OOC: Welcome aboard Cadet. I'll put you on the crew roster right away."Unfortunately Doctor, there's no way of knowing it. T'Pok's body was found rather horribly mutilated. From what the V'Shar told me, a pirate boarding party attacked the ship and shot all who resisted, after which they piled the bodies in an escape pod and launched it. The escape pod was discovered on one of the Vulcan moons, where it had crashed. I do not have information concerning his katra, but I'll petition the Vulcan government to release the bodies to you for autopsy." Doctor Firestorm nodded and resumed his seat. After the briefingJames was pleased with the reactions of the crew. They were practical and professional and he had full confidence in them. He and Captain Edwards were walking down the corridor towards the Captain's quarters. The hepta would leave in an hour and James had suggested Captain Edwards use that time to catch some extra rest so he would be fit when the Hepta left spacedock. Edwards still looked exhausted, but better than he had looked all through yesterday. <TAG: Captain>

As he walked with him, he asked: "Sir, do you want me to prepare a team for possible boarding actions, or spend more time co-ordinating with security to repel possible incursions. I'll need to know what myself and my team should equip ourselves with" Danny looked at his new Cadet. Eager was the first word that came to mind. Cadet Wong's attitude was promising. "Our first priority is ship's security. I'd rather be able to defend ourselves than to attack. In 15 minutes we'll have a meeting with Commander Chan and the Security team." Cadet Wong nodded that he understood. Security office, 15 minutes laterDanny and Cadet Wong entered Commander Chan's office. As usual, she had been the first to arrive. Her cadets were already studying the geography of the Vulcan system. Danny nodded a greeting to Commander Chan and he and Cadet Wong took their seats. Commander Chan started the meeting. "We will need tight ship's security. Commander O'Connor said they liked boarding ships. Needless to say I don't want them here." Everybody nodded their approval as she continued: "Captain Löhnen, your Marine teams will guard the transporter rooms and vital areas in the ship. I need you to post guards in Engineering, Sickbay, the computer bays and on the Bridge. My teams will regularly patrol the corridors and we will monitor from the Bridge. The Cadets can take tours patrolling and observing with us on the Bridge. Agreed?" Danny nodded. "100% Commander." He turned to Cadet Wong. "Make sure you get to know your fellow security Cadets well, you're going to be patrolling the ship and taking reports from the Marine guards in the vital areas of the ship as soon as we reach the Vulcan system. Cadets Knight, Jamison and Wong, I need you to realise that if anything goes wrong, you will most likely be our first line of defence. Before more security teams can arrive you will probably be the ones who first encounter any potential intruders. Keep your eyes open and stay together. No wandering alone!"
Commander Chan nodded her approval and ended the meeting. This would be a rather valuable first mission for the cadets.<TAG: Cadets, Commander Chan>

Matthew Vayne after knowing he was put on the USS Hepta's Roster list, he looked and wondered where his quarters would be and if he could pick up a detailed map of the ship so he would not get lost. he then thought the best thing to do would be to contact the commander of the vessel to get someone to give him everything he needed, and when his instructor would be returning becuase he would like to start he training as soon as possible. He then remembered the little intercom thing on his uniform and how to use it thanks to the shuttle ship that brought him to the USS Hepta's landing bay!

OOC: A small bit of backposting. This happens during the mission briefing.
About half-way through the briefing, James's comm went off.
=/\= Matthew to Commander O'Connor, "Sir, Can you please send someone down to give me assitance with my quarters and when training will start, Sir?? =/\=
James heaved a sigh before tapping his comm badge.
=^=This is O'Connor. We're in the middle of a meeting Cadet. I suggest you take the nearest turbolift and report to the observation lounge so you can catch the last part of the mission briefing. O'Connor out.=^=
James continued with the briefing as if nothing had happened. A few minutes later, the door swooshed open and a flushed looking Cadet entered. "Hello Cadet. Welcome to your first briefing. That's doctor Firestorm over there, he'll be your Instructor. You can make acquintances later," James said without taking his eyes off the viewscreen. As soon as he had finished addressing the Cadet, he continued with the mission briefing.

James had suggested Captain Edwards use that time to catch some extra rest so he would be fit when the Hepta left spacedock. Edwards still looked exhausted, but better than he had looked all through yesterday. Not actually wanting to rest, but yet feeling the need to do so, TJ decided it wiser to follow the advice of both the CMO and his First Officer and take that break from duty so that he would be ready to give his all, if need be, to the mission.
"'Tis a fine suggestion ye make, Mr. O'Connor," he said, fixing his eyes on his quarters, which were now nearby. "I'll be seein' ye on th' Bridge by th' time we're leavin' spacedock."

She looked at Captain Lohnen. He seemed to have overall plans for the mission well worked out, and she liked that. She knew the soldier who entered battle prepared would more likely be the soldier that returned home from battle alive. <Tag – Security & Marine Cadets>

-In her Quarters-
Jerri had been up for the last hour, ready and anxious for what the day would bring. Her first day at her new duty station. Even though it was only a training ship she had to be ready for anything. When the doctor arrived at her door she was just running a towel over her hair.
She opened the door at his poundings. "Yes .... sir." she stammered as she tossed the towel aside and grabbed her jacket, making sure to fasten up the toggles properly so that her jacket wasn't on crooked or buttoned wrong. she followed the other cadet and the doctor to the briefing.
-At the Briefing-
Jerri listened as the Captain gave the briefing. She had no questions ... yet, but was sure some would surface as time went on. With the attacks she was sure her services would be needed so she was going to be ready for whatever came her way.
She simply shook her head when the Captain asked if there were any questions from the cadets. As the doctor spoke she chuckled.
"Might as well teach you two how to do a proper autopsy, mightn't I?"
"I'd like to see what you call a proper autopsy .. sir." she commented. She settled back in her chair to listen to the rest of the briefing.

Alex was on the bridge looking over things not wanting to be left out. She had trouble sleeping later than four am, and loved to be on the bridge bright and early. She was looking over a few things, and suddenly when it only seemed like minutes passed a briefing was called.
Alex checked the time, and noticed a couple of hours had passed, so she reported to the Observation Lounge letting some ensign take over at Operations. She was nervous about the kid at her post, but tried not to think about it.
Alex listened to the briefing, and was about to leave when a woman walked over and introduced herself.
"Hello, Commander Parker, I look forward to working with you. Oh, yes, I am Commander Alexandria Nikmud. I prefer Alex though, when rank is put aside. Shall we get to work?" Alex said introducing herself, not liking to waste time on the small issues.

Cadets Knight, Jamison and Wong sat in the security office studying the layout of the ship. They hadn't had a chance for a full tour so they needed to learn where everything was as soon as possible. Jamison was a little surprised at himself for the way he was feeling. He had been fighting pretty much all his life and was eager to get his hands on a foe. But he also understood that he had more than just his life in his hands. He also had friends and shipmates to watch out for. He had never had to care about anyone else before so he was a little conflicted. A little. He knew he was part of something special. He was part of a team. A unit. And that unit helped each other. He knew that they could be a great unit given the chance. Would be a great unit.

(After being dismissed from the briefing)
Matthew was very nervous about walking up to the Commander because of wut happened the last time they had talked. He then finally had decided to walk up the commander to say thanks.
"Commander O'Conner sorry about inturrupting the briefing, but i would also like to thank you for telling me who my instructor is and telling me where to go cause i was completely lost at that moment!"
Tag: Commander O'Connor
He shaked the commanders hand firmly, turned around and walked towards his instructor which the commander nicely tolf me who is was. he walked up to his instructor, got his attention, and then said "Sir, Matthew Vayne here. I am one of your new Cadets reporting for duty for you, and I am hoping we can start training as soon as possible. Seens how you are my instructor and all do you think you could show me to my quarters, and also to me companions who will be training with me?"

James surveyed the Cadet. "That's all right Cadet, don't worry about it anymore. I think you're going to like it on the Hepta. I'll show you to your Instructor." Together they walked over to Doctor Firestorm. Cadet Vayne shook James's hand and drew Doctor Doctor Firestorm's attention.

It was important to have a little time of relaxation aboard the ship, Seth knew. This way the cadets and instructors would get to know eachother a bit better if they hadn't already done so. That's why Seth always stalled the departure a little bit, in a playfull way of course. But now that he had checked for the sixth time in a row whether they were good to go, Seth decided it was better not to let Commander O'Connor wait anymore. In no time the Hepta was manoeuvred out of the spacedock.
With a grin, Seth thought back about James telling him to prepare for 'some fancy flying', to which he replied that he was as ready as ever, waiting for it to actually happen. Seth sighed slightly and directed the Hepta to the Vulcan system.
"Waiting for your command to shoot into warp sir." Seth informed James, and when the command came, Seth ordered the vessel to increase it's speed. The stars, that had been dots up till this moment, slowly faded to strings of light, and the Hepta was underway for another adventurous mission.

TJ was in the arms of Morpheus the instant his head hit the pillow, and didn’t awaken again until the Hepta began gliding out of spacedock.
It was what he had needed. He was refreshed and ready to go to work, feeling better than he had in weeks. He showered and put on a fresh uniform, then left his quarters for the Bridge.
Taking in a deep breath, he smiled, happy to feel like his old self again. He stepped toward the hatchway in front of him, and onto the Bridge of the USS Hepta. The leviathan that was the flagship of Starbase Conqueror was now ready to go into warp. TJ nodded for Commander O’Connor to give the order to switch from impulse to warp drive, and watched approvingly as his First Officer did so.
This was going to be a grand adventure!

As they walked out of the briefing room, Tiberian turned to the security cadets: "If neither of you have any problems I'd like to see you both and you teams in the armoury on deck 4 in about ... er, shall we say 30 minutes. That'll give us a chance to sort equipment and work out were each of us and our respective teams should be stationed" Nodding to both of them, Tiberian turned on heel and entered the turbolift nearest to him. Arriving on deck 4 moments later he entered the armoury, and using a pad, began making a list of the most logical equipment for onboard fighting. "Lets see" he muttered to himself as he tapped on the pad "Compression phaser rifles seem like a good idea, standard side phasers, maybe photon grenades, flashbangs" as he reached the far end of te armoury he was suddenly hit by a stroke of tactical ingenuity. Tapping on his comm badge, he said: "Cadet Wong to Commander Chan. Ma'am, I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I thought about setting up transporter inhibitors in all but a few areas of the ship. This would mean we'd be able to dictate where they'd attack from, and thus consolidate our defensive efforts"

Firestorm gave the female cadet a sharp glance, not quite amused by her comment. "I'd like to see you still laughing after I've shown you cadet Ballar," he shot back, "report to holodeck one after this briefing for instruction." He definately expected her to be still smiling, though he sincerely doubted she would be. If and when he needed to perform an autopsy, he performed it according to 20th century protocol rather than computerized. Like most doctors, Firestorm preferred conventional means rather than modern. "You too cadet Wolfram, report to holodeck one after the briefing. I see you're not smiling, that's very wise of you indeed.
(resp-Ballar and Wolfram)
After the briefing, another cadet was directed his way and a young man introduced himself.
"Well," Firestorm mused, surprised that his profession was suddenly so very popular. Yet he was pleased too. "You're quartered with Cadet Wolfram," he told the young man, "so after duty shift I'm certain he'll take you there."
Firestorm pointed towards Wolfram and Ballar. "That're cadets Wolfram and Jerri Ballar, your fellow medical students. They're currently reporting to holodeck one for autopsy training, I suggest you introduce yourself to them, and then join them. Your luggage will be transported to your quarters, I'm certain the quartermaster'll have seen to that one you boarded the Hepta."
The Sivaoan doctor handed Vayne a PADD. "Briefing details," he explained, "next time do please try to attend a briefing. This time I'll let it slide because you arrived late on board. Now, report to holodeck one, I'll be with you shortly."
(resp-Vaye...how do you take the sort of telling off as well as the prospect of doing an autopsy?)
Firestorm turned on his heels, fully expecting the newcomer to join the other two. He knew he could count on other instructors should he experience trouble with dealing with his cadets. After all this was his first time both as instructor as well as chief medical officer. He'd only just earned his MD himself, after serving as a chief nurse on a station for several years and completing his doctor's training in his spare time.
Minutes later, Firestorm entered the holodeck watching the three anxious cadets. "Computer, load program Autopsy training Ennien one. Interpret results as cadets work individually and enter their data into computers."
Suddenly the holodeck grid was replaced by an autopsy room, where three human cadavers were displayed on metal slabs, covered by thin white sheets. "You are to determine whether these three people died of natural or unnatural causes," Firestorm explained, "please ask for assistance if you aren't certain what to do. After all you're here to learn, to make mistakes on this first class is understandable. By the time you graduate however, you are expected to do this unassisted. Please commence your autopsy and refer to your manuals on how to proceed." As he said it, Firestorm handed out a PADD to each cadet with instructions on how to proceed, then he took a step back to oversee what his threesome would do next.
(resp Wolfram, Ballar and Vayne...I'll fill in results for you..please enter ||result|| when you think you've found something and entered your observation into your computers. Don't hesitate to be creative)

“You can call me Sam,” she said. They moved out of the briefing room and onto the bridge and over to one of the stations at the back of bridge.
“I suggest we contact Vulcan command and see if we can get any sensor readings from the attacks of the vessels and then look for anything common odd sensor readings in them, which we can expand upon to work out a method to detect the ship though it’s cloak,” Samantha suggested. Alex nodded in response.
“Also we could also search the database for any methods that have been used to see though cloaks,” Sam also suggested. Alex nodded again.
“Any other ideas?” she asked Alex.
<Alex>
“Computer search the library database for methods for seeing though cloaks,” Sam ordered.
“That task will take approximately 6 minutes to complete,” the computer responded.
Sam then contacted Vulcan command and asked for all sensor reading they had recovered from the attacks. The Vulcan said they’d send the information as soon as possible.

Jamison hit the mess hall and grabbed aquick bite. He was starting to fell the companionship he had missed since his mother died. It felt great to have, well ,could he call them friends yet? Maybe it was to soon for that. Associates. That's it. He had associates that would soon be friends. He decided on soon because nothing brings people closer than battle. Each of you depended on the other to have your back and only a true friend would do so. After this ordeal was over, Jamison would know who his true friends were. Still chewing his last bite, he left and headed for the armory to meet up eith Cadet Wong.

"Well, if we know what class of ship we are dealing with, it might be easier to come up with something," she said quickly as Sam went to contact the Vulcan people.
Alex wasn't sure if she was suppose to wait for her, but found that it helped to do so. ~I guess she is used to doing everything, that can't be good in engineering.~ She thought as she heard what was going on.
Once the call was ended the computer finished the scan showing a few ways to find a cloaked ship.
"Hey, why don't we check out these options somewhere else. I don't mind the hallway, but I think we could get a few more answers at my work station, or yours if you prefer," she said and pulled out a padd, downloading the information for transport. She then started to walk toward the turbolift to head for someplace a little less open.

As [Tiberian] reached the far end of te armoury he was suddenly hit by a stroke of tactical ingenuity. Tapping on his comm badge, he said: "Cadet Wong to Commander Chan. Ma'am, I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I thought about setting up transporter inhibitors in all but a few areas of the ship. This would mean we'd be able to dictate where they'd attack from, and thus consolidate our defensive efforts." Xin-Ling nodded silently as she listened to the cadet's idea. He had obviously been thinking. What he had suggested was a tactical maneuver that had worked down through history, and that she knew was the method used by the ancient Greeks at the Battle of Thermopolae to permit the defenders of the city, though few in number, to effectively hold back a much larger army. Yes, "bottlenecking" the enemy as they boarded was a good thought. Tactically sound.
"This excellent suggestion, cadet. Only I would suggest we limit boarding of enemy forces further. Make them enter Hepta from only one point, then we have upper hand. Commander Parker and I will see that point of entry well covered by security.
"Chan out."

"To be or not to be, that's the question." Those were the last words before James drifted off into the shadowy regions of deep sleep. The Hepta was en route to the Vukcan system. They would arrive there in twenty-four hours and James was enjoying his few hours of leisure before the problems would begin.
The skull in James's hand looked familiar. The skull stared back at him with its empty eyes and smiled its eery dead man's grin. "To be or not to be, that's the question." He could hear the enormous audience suck in their breath as James O'Connor, a.k.a. Prince Hamlet of Denmark, started his famous soliloquy. It was a star performace, his best ever! He was in top shape and feeling lucky. "Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer, The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep--"
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
"BLAST!" James woke up with a start and cursed again. It had been such a wonderful dream.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
James tapped his comm badge, still half asleep.
=^=WHAT!?=^= he snapped. Clearly nervous at this unexpected reaction, the yeoman on the bridge answered. =^=Commander, sorry to interrupt you sir, I know you've pulled a long shift sir, but.........=^= James impatiently interrupted the man. =^=Could we please get to the point yeoman?=^= he asked in a kinder voice than before. The yeoman pulled himself together. =^=There's a transmission from the Vulcan high command for you sir.=^= James was pleased. At least they didn't lose to much time on bureaucratic chit chat.^=^=Thank you yeoman, please put it through to my quarters. O'Connor out.=^=
James regretted having yelled at the yeoman, but there was nothing he could do about it now. If he had the time, perhaps he would apologize later. Quickly, he pulled his uniform straight, went over to his desk and entered his access code on the small computer. "Computer, access transmission for O'Connor, authorization O'Connor 1919 Black" The computer beeped an acknowledgement and the impassive face of a Vukcan V'Shar official appeared on the screen.
"Commander O'Connor. my name is P'Tak of the V'Shar. I hereby give you authorized access to the bodies of the victims of the pirate attack. Our medical personnel will be available to answer questions from your medical officer. You may inform your medical officer of our decision. The autopsies will be performed on Vulcan. We will not have our dead transported aboard your starship. Contact us when you enter orbit. P'Tak out."
The total lack of social graces in Vulcans never ceased to amaze James. He hadn't even had the opportunity to reply. He was intrigued by the problems with the pirates, but he didn't look forward to working too closely with the Vulcans. James generally wasn't a racist and he knew he had to keep an open mind about other races and their customs, but he considered being around Vulcans the same as working with robots. No emotions, no jokes, not even a smile, only pure, cold hearted logic. He sometimes wondered whether the Vulcans cared for anyone or anything at all...........
Holodeck, 10 minutes later
James entered the holodeck and was amazed at the gorey mess. The smell of blood and cold, decomposing corpses was strong and James could only hope that it would be gone from the holodeck when the programme was ended. Doctor Firestorm walked around the several tables on which the cadets were cutting in their test subjects. The sight made James want to throw up. He had never witnessed a twentieth-century autopsy and would not have lost a single night sleep over it if he had been spared the experience.
Doctor Firestorm looked up from what he was doing and saw James standing there. James didn't exactly know what to do. On the one hand, he ought to tell doctor Firestorm the good news, on the other hand he didn't want to be nearer to the carnage than absolutely necessary. Doctor Firestorm seemed to sense his dilemma and walked over to James. "Can I help you Commander?" he asked. James told Doctor Firestorm the good news about the autopsies he was allowed to perform on the Vulcan home world.
<TAG: Doctor Firestorm>
James was very pleased when he could finally leave the holodeck. He had seen terrible things in battle, but somehow that was different, it felt different. All in all, James was glad he had chosen Engineering and Starship Operations before becoming XO. He would have made a lousy doctor.
