As the First Officer and Captain entered the mess hall, there was tension in the air. Not a foreboding, but more of a certain anticipatory excitement about the mysterious and upcoming mission. The noise level had dropped considerably as they entered, and came to a hush when they took their places at one of the tables in front.
Before TJ uttered his opening statement, the lights dimmed in the hall and the image of a young Asian man was thrown on the viewscreen. TJ’s attention was riveted to the picture for nearly a moment before he spoke.
“Th’ first thing I’m wantin’ t’ do is t’ welcome all th’ new cadets aboard th’ Hepta an’ give a ‘welcome home’ for all th’ officers.
“Th’ young man ye see on screen is Sam Nogura, eldest son o’ Admiral Nogura here at Starbase Conqueror.”
At this point, the veiwscreen changed to a picture with the star Deneb Kaitos just off its center and featured a hazy patch at exact mid-center of the screen.
“An’ this is somethin’ that’s appeared quite recently in th’ vicinity of Deneb Kaitos that we think is a temporal rift – a gateway in time, if ye will – that’s th’ location of our new mission.
“Two days ago, Sam was accidentally pulled into th’ rift an’ has not been heard from since.
“Our mission is simply stated: we are t’ be makin’ our way t’ th’ area, find a way t’ safely enter th’ rift an’ bar any other craft from enterin’, locate th’ Admiral’s son an’ bring him home. If at all possible, we’re under orders t’ then permanently close this ‘tunnel of time’.
“Any questions?...”
<Tag... anyone...>
”If no one has any further questions, then me own personal comments are in order.
“’Tis not th’ mission we were goin’ t’ run for th’ trainin’ o’ you cadets, but th’ answer of th’ base to a distraught father's cry.
“Not knowin’ that much yet about time travel, Starfleet havin’ only accomplished it a few times in th’ past, an’ not bein’ certain what’s on th’ other side o’ th’ rift, ‘tis th’ possibility o’ added danger we’ll be facin’.
“Our officers are indeed fine; an’ ‘tis appearin’ from th’ records we’ve a fine group o’ cadets this time out as well; ‘tis naught but th’ utmost confidence I’m havin’ in ye all.”
TJ paused, looking over the assembly before him before speaking the words that would officially begin the mission.
“Ladies an’ gentlemen,” he said, “let’s be gettin’ t’ work.”

"Any questions? Methos heard the CO ask.
Methos listened to the brief and asked,"Sir, how are we supposed to close the rift, and keep other star craft from entering it?'

The captain answered and then said his personal coments, and then said the words that Methos wanted to hear: "Let's be gettin' t' work."
Methos looked at his instructer, who was standing next to him, "Sir, just what will we be doing as we wait to arrive at the Deneb Kaitos system?"

James had been silently listening to his Captain. He had known what would be coming and was relieved to sense the crew took it well. Cadet Methos asked a question and James was just about to reply when Captain Edwards again took the word. "that's a very good question Cadet. In truth, I haven't the foggiest." Captain Edwards looked around the room to see if there were any more questions.
The Captain nodded to James, who stood up. "All right, here's the situation...." A strategical map of the quadrant appeared on the viewscreen. James pointed to a tiny ship. "This is us." He now pointed towards a pinky-blueish ribbon, pulsing some distance away "This is the temporal rift." On the viewscreen, a dotted yellow line moved from the tiny ship towards the ribbon, clearly indicating the course they were about to set. "We have exactly two days before we are entering the rift. Commander Ford, Commander Hawk, we need your Science and Engineering departments to work together on keeping this ship in one piece when we're moving through the rift. Also, you are to find a way to get us back to the here and now once we've completed our mission."
<TAG: Ford/Penfold>
James continued. He had a clear sense of purpose and he knew exactly what the crew needed to do before the Hepta reached the rift. "Commander Chan, Colonel MacHeath, we have absolutely no clue what we're going to find on the other side of that rift. I need you to be prepared for anything. Please keep your people in prime condition and train them for the unexpected."
<TAG: Chan/MacHeath>
James surveyed the crew. Some of them were loking quite agitated, but so far they were OK. "Commander Bern, we're probably in for a rather bumpy ride. Are you ready to beat the odds again?"
<TAG: Commander Bern>
"Very well, if there are no further questions........" James looked around, expecting to be buried in questions, but it seemed the briefing had been clear enough. The questions would probably flow in later. "Dismissed!"
The crew sprang to their feet and there was an enormous buzzing noise of excitement, nervousness, apprehension and eagerness. In all the confusion, James just manage to find Doctor Johnson. "Counselor, a short word please." Dr Johnson looked around. "What can i do for you Commander?" "My research for this mission turned up a lot of instances in which the crew were reacting......well, strangely when traveling through time. My data showed the disconcerting effect time-traveling can have on people. Could you keep an even closer eye on the crew than usual?"

"Sir, how are we supposed to close the rift, and keep other star craft from entering it?' "'Tis two things I've been thinkin'," mused TJ aloud. "We might put up a buoy at th' entrance t' th' rift, but I see no way we can be certain all ships approachin' th' area are properly warned, simply because we're not knowin' just who would be comin' by.
"Or," <here TJ paused, as if carefully selecting his words> "we could attempt t' close th' rift behind us, leavin' th' science department t' provide us with some way o' gettin' back t' our own time. In a word, 'tis a very good question ye have, cadet. In truth, I haven't th' foggiest."
The quietness in the room intensified as the import of this method sunk into the crew's collective consciousness. What if they closed the rift but were unable to open another to return?

Please keep your people in prime condition and train them for the unexpected." Xin-Ling, along with the rest of the room, understood the urgency and the danger of this mission. There was the chance they might never return from wherever they would find themselves on the other side of the rift that the captain had called a "tunnel of time".
"Understood, sir. I will comply," she said softly.

Doug looked at Commander Chan. He saw in her eyes that she had come to the same conclusion as he had. Imminent danger. unknown imminent danger. Cadet Methos looked at him questioningly, unsure what to think of this new situation. "Cadet, this is going to be an interesting one. Are you ready to face the unknown?" he asked with a roguish smile.
<TAG: Methos>
The meeting broke up and Doug and Methos went to Deck 5-A, the Marine Deck. As they entered the Training Range, they saw several Marine squads busily training for active duty. Cadet Methos looked around uneasily. Sergeant-Major Albert Plumley approached the two new arrivals and saluted his superior officer. Doug returned the salute. "Sergeant-Major Plumley, this is Cadet Methos who will be doing his officer training with us. Cadet Methos, this is Sergeant-Major Plumley, my Marine XO." The two shook hands. "Sergeant-Major, how are my Marines?" Plumley smiled grimly. "In prime condition sir. they are ready to eat their own guts and ask for seconds." Doug raised his eyebrows. He never ceased to be impressed by the exclamations of this experienced iron-eater. "That won't exactly be necessary Sergeant-Major, but I'm glad they're doing well. Well done!" Plumley saluted and returned to squad he was drilling. Doug and Methos could just hear him yelling something about lazy maggots as they left the Training Range.
15 minutes later, Doug and Methos entered Commander Chan's office. Xin-Ling had been expecting them. "So," she said in her usual efficient way. "Let's get down to planning Security on the oncoming voyage."

A temporal mission was something that Jason always wanted to do. Especially since he had joined the USS Voyager, which had been trapped in 1996 for numerous days. Yet he also understood the danger of this mission. What if in the process of gathering the Admiral's son the rift closed? What if they contaminated the time line? All of a sudden Jason got a massive migraine, so this is why no one likes temporal missions Jason told himself as he rubbed his head.
"Very well, if there are no further questions........" James looked around, expecting to be buried in questions, but it seemed the briefing had been clear enough. The questions would probably flow in later. "Dismissed!"
Jason walked out of the conference room and made his way towards his station. He was disappointed when he discovered that he hadn't received any cadets, so for now he would have to hone his skills and become a strong, trusted instructor.
Jason sat at his station and saw one by one as the bridge crew and their cadets entered. He hadn't met any of them before, but that was part of the excitment. Meeting new people, culture, and races.
"Captain, all systems show 100% effiecency, we are ready to go at your order," Jason reported.

"Commander Ford," Hawk said standing up from the meeting, "I wil bring the cadets up to the bridge to start working on the problem as soon as we get underway."
The crowd quickly scattered as cadets and instructors alike made their way to their specific stations. Hawk had always been an officer who bounced back and forth from many different positions on a starship and was used to the rush of a busy day.
Stepping onto a turbo lift Hawk reconized a female cadet from his orders PADD he had recieved just that day.
"Might you be Karigan Mercia?" Hawk asked.

Jack felt a little rusty, it had been a while, well in fact a long while. Its not like he didnt know what he was doing he was an experianced officer, and had been in the acadeny for many years in various positions. But he felt nervous, he felt like a Cadet again and he was hoping it didnt showed.
Jack was hoping that his Cadet was paying attention. He had yet to introduce himself to Cadet John Roberts properly, they had exchanged a cursory Nod as Cadet Roberts had come into the Briefing.
Throught the briefing Jack took his usual notes, and was bringing himself up-to-date with all the new personnel and cadets making sure that clearances were granted to the correct people, and that ultimately they all come back in one piece.
“Any questions?...”
Jack look at Roberts who was tapping feverishly away on a PADD.
~Well has to be good sign, unless hes playing Tetris on that padd~ he thought to himself.
”If no one has any further questions, then me own personal comments are in order.

The room erupted in chatter as everyone got up and left to see to their particular departmental duties.
"Mr Reynolds, if you could spare a few moments, I think we need to get introduced formerly. Im Commander Jack Parker and I shall be your Security & Tactical Instructor" Jack said reaching out and shaking Reynolds' hand.
<Roberts>
"I was wondering what your view/take was on this mission, and what you think we as a department will need to do?"
<Roberts>
"We shall meet again in 2hours time and compare notes. Any questions?"

"Commander Bern, we're probably in for a rather bumpy ride. Are you ready to beat the odds again?" James said to Seth, who nodded.
"As ready as I'll ever be commander O'Connor!" Seth replied, and went to the helm to get his usual job done. He had made sure that nobody had altered anything at his post. There was no CNO cadet present to fix it, and Seth hated to do it himself.
"Captain, all systems show 100% effiecency, we are ready to go at your order," Comander Reynolds informed the captain.
"Very well, Mr. Reynolds..." TJ said, "move us on out!"
Seth frowned, he didn't recall it to be the job of the operations officer to move the ship out of the dock, but he just pretended that the captain had said it to him instead of someone else.
"Aye captain," Seth confirmed, and began to undock the Hepta after it was disconnected from its supply routes.
The Hepta cleared the boundaries of the dock, and Seth entered the coordinates of Deneb Kaitos.
"Ready to go on your command sir!" Seth said to TJ, and waited for his signal to enter warp speed.
<<TJ>>
Seth went into warpspeed and wanted to called up information about the flight time on his viewscreen. To his amazement it showed that the arrived at the destination a couple of centuries ago.
Seth tapped his commbadge to inform the engineering department. =^=Commander Seth Bern to engineering, I can't get an accurate reading of when we will arrive at Deneb Kaitos, my guess is that this disruption is caused by the rift, could you perhaps look after this?=^=

Sirs, I was thinking about how we would go about keeping other ships out of the rift, while someone, if its the enitre ship or not, went in and rescued the Admiral's son. I was thinking that the ship stay on this side of the rift and we sent in a couple of shuttles, filled with mostly Marines and some scientists and doctors. The doctors and scientists because we don't know whats on the other side. What do you think?"

"We have exactly two days before we are entering the rift. Commander Ford, Commander Hawk, we need your Science and Engineering departments to work together on keeping this ship in one piece when we're moving through the rift. Also, you are to find a way to get us back to the here and now once we've completed our mission."
"No problem, Commander," said William. "It'll be a walk in the park."
"Not a very nice one," observed Penfold.
"You want a pretty, purple ribbon instead?" asked O'Connor, smiling.
"Yeah," replied William. "That would be nice. That colour" he pointed to the picture "doesn't look very nice. Purple would be great."
O'Connor shook his head. Sometimes he wondered how those two particular instructors had gotten through the Academy themselves, much less been given jobs there. He continued with the debreifing.
*********************************************
"Commander Ford," Hawk said standing up from the meeting, "I wil bring the cadets up to the bridge to start working on the problem as soon as we get underway."
"Sure thing," said William. "I think we'll focus on the sensors and- well, we can discuss that when you come, you're right."
After a few minutes, William had ordered the science labs prepared for possible additions to their numbers - namely, the engineers. Some of the scientists looked unhappy at the prospect of working with engineers, because the two had different ways of doing things. The scientists went too fast for the engineers in theoretical aspects, and the engineers would always be trying to apply it in real scenarios as opposed to controlled ones. They also had a fear of the scientists tampering with the warp core, and the scientists in turn didn't want engineering draining the sensor power for the warp core, or something else. But for the most part, the two got along very well. In fact, the only thing William was worried about was the occasional prank. Which wasn't too unlikely...
Hawk stepped out of the turbolift with a couple of cadets and headed to William and Penfold.
"I thought we should focus on the sensors, and you could focus on keeping the ship moving through that thing," said William. "We'll need to compile our work for a lot of it, though."
Hawk nodded. "Agreed. Shall we work on the Bridge?"
"I have the labs prepped in case we need them," offered William. He could see from the grin on Hawk's face that he, too, knew about the dangers of putting engineers and scientists together. Pranks increased exponentially when you got two different departments together. Not only did the inner-deparment conflicts disappear (for the moment) against a greater foe, the pranks increased in size as well. The departments almost placed as much importance in pranks as they did in getting the job done. William realised he'd need to make sure they didn't do that this time - it was too serious a mission.

"Yes, Commander, I am." she said, coming to attention. "May I help you, sir?"
"I just wanted to introduce myself," Hawk said casually extending his hand for her to shake, "I am Commander Hawk, the Chief Engineer of this ship and your instructor."
The two continued to talk on the way to Main Engineering. Stepping inside the Hawk listened to the wonderful sounds of the warp core, of all the times he had worked down inside of an engine room he never got tired of listening to the sounds of the warp core.
"Cadet, I want to let you know I normally run a really loose engine room. Though I expect excellence I never stress the formalities the Captain does," Hawk said stopping at the center console in engineering, "Cadet I want you to run a quick diagnostic on the ship before we head up to the bridge to talk with Commander Ford."
<Tag Cadet Mercia>
Hawk had spent the better part of fifteen minutes speaking with the assistant chief engineer while the young cadet got her feet wet with the engineering console's diagnostic programs. He had waited for her to finish up before he approached her again.
"What did you find out?" Hawk asked.
<Tag Cadet Mercia>
Hawk nodded as he listened to Mercia explain what she had found out. Once she finished speaking Hawk motioned for her toward another cadet.
"Cadet Mercia this is Cadet Shinsei, you two will be working pretty close with one another so I suggest you get to know each other." Hawk said smiling as the two cadet began to introduce themselves.
<Tag Cadets Mercia, Shinsei>
Once the introductions were over Hawk gathered up his troops and headed to the bridge to start to work out the temporal rift problems with the science departments head guru, Commander Ford. Hawk read the Commander's bio when he was down in engineering and was told to watch his back because Ford had been know for pulling pranks. Hawk smiled at the comments knowing the stakes were higher since he was a new officer aboard the ship.
Hawk was pleased to see that Commander Ford had everything set up for the cadets when they arrived on the bridge, "Mercia, Shinsei I want you two to work close with Command Ford for a minute while I get Mr. Reynolds to get us some more power." Hawk said moving down to speak with the OPS officer.
<Tag Mercia, Shinsei, Ford>
"Commander Reynolds," Hawk said as he approached the OPS officer, "Any chance you could give us a hand by increasing the power output of our sensors?"

"Mr. Parker, sir, you have special thoughts on how we handle security on this mission?" Commander Chan asked.
"Yes I do, I was hoping my cadet would be joining us. I will have to see where he is later, now my concerns.
Maybe I'm just the skeptical type, but we must be very aware of the fact that this is not a naturally occurring phenomenon, and is in-fact a very clever trap, their are records on many such instances."
Jack paused for a moment, wanting everyone to seriously thing about what he had just said.
"So we could be entering the spiders-web then?" Chan asked
"Indeed, just the correct anology. I am also concerned that I have not seen my cadet for over 3hrs now. The computer is unable to locate him. I find it hard to believe his dis-appearance has anything to do with this mission, but I am getting concerned. Commander Chan if you would not mind assisting me in locating my cadet, unfortunately we will have to search the old fashioned way."
<Chan>
"We should also inform the Captain, dis-appearing cadets are never a good thing." Jack said looking more nervous than when he first walk in.

James was growing concerned. They were only hours from the rift and still there was no definite answer of how they were going to get through it or, more importantly, how to get back. He saw Engineers and Scientists running to and fro, but so far there hadn't been a report on the progress of their efforts. He was becoming restless and started pacing up and down the Bridge, ignoring the mildly amused expression on Captain Edwards's face. Lieutenant Colonel MacHeath entered the bridge and James jumped at the occasion. "Colonel, what do you think? Are your Cadets ready?" Colonel MacHeath nodded. "As ready as they're ever going to be. I can see they'll become a great team. In fact, I've scheduled an unannounced drill in the holodeck in a few minutes, care to join us?" James looked questioningly at the Captain. "Sure," Edwards said. "if it puts your mind at ease. I'll need you back on the Bridge in an hour though." James nodded an affirmative and he and Colonel MacHeath left the Bridge for Holodeck 1. James turned to MacHeath when they were zooming through the intestines of the ship. "One second Colonel, I need to have the current status on that rift." MacHeath nodded, understanding the Commander's dilemma. James tapped his commbadge.
