"Thank you ensign," Sonak acknowledged her CEO's message, then got up and tapped Tovan on his shoulder. "Commander, I believe I just requested an ETA back to Bellicose," she said gently. She hadn't missed the veiled but haunted look in the young Vulcan's eyes and wondered what had happened to him while he had been abducted. "Commander, do you wish to consult a counselor? I am available if you wish to talk about it, I assure you I am a qualified counselor."
She waited for Tovan to respond then nodded. "Very well," she answered then made eye-contact with Logan, who nodded in response to her unasked question. "I will be in sickbay," she confirmed, "alert me when we approach Bellicose. I have just received word that Commander Kanz shall be leaving us, and a new security chief shall be waiting for us at Starbase Bellicose." She smiled softly. "Commander Kanz shall be joining Fleet Admiral Elron on the Black Tulip. A fine ship, that is certain, and a fine commanding officer."
Letting that sink in, she walked off the bridge and entered Mercury's sickbay a few minutes later. A very ill Romulan female was lying prone on one of the biobeds, partly shielded from view by a curtain, while on the other side, an unconscious Romulan male was being restrained by a forcefield. In a smaller bed lay Elian, Rick and Elanna's daughter and the couple was standing next to the bed accompanied by their adoptive sons.
Sonak walked up to Marco and quietly tapped him on the shoulder. "How are you holding up doctor?" she asked softly, "and where is Jatan? Is he going to be all right? I heard Govan forced you to torture him, please do not feel bad about it. You chose the lesser evil and I am certain Jatan will understand. I understand and will not hold it against you. I am extending the same service to you as I have to Commander Tovan. I am available should you require counseling, as we have no other counselor available at the moment but me."

"The lesser evil indeed!" Marco wasn't in the mood to explain yet again how Jatan's fingers were singed, or in the case of the left pinky - missing... but he also didn't care for rumors floating around about this nightmare.
"It wasn't too tough, though to regrow them. Manufacturing some stem cells from spinal fluid, and running it through the genetic sequencer, we were able to stimulate growth." When that part of the procedure was complete, the paste-like substance was applied to the exposed bone. Normally it takes months to regrow fingers in the womb for humans. When placed in a hyper-metabolic chamber, however, it only took a day. "Don't let him use those fingers for a couple of weeks. The burned ones, however, should be usable."
The Commodore nodded.
"Plus, I don't think it would be a good idea for him to be in here right now with these two." Marco nodded his head to the left and the right, as he was standing between the two.
"Between you and me, I have half a mind to yank the cord right out of that bed." It was only a figurative statement. Had the power conduit been severed on the force-field bed, the backup power generation unit built in would turn on.
"Tell me that we are going to hand these ones over to the authorities soon. I already stabilized them... I have no interest in keeping them around." He shuddered.
"OH! One more thing. The baby... with all she went through... doing fine. We restarted treatment. again." It was the third time he had to reformulate the treatment. First, in sickbay when they originally diagnosed the child, then again on the Romulan ship when he was forced into recreating his work, and now again on the Vesuvius, with half the equipment missing on the beam-off to the Romulan ship. "At least this last time, the main ship memory knew the procedure. I didn't have to remember anything, just replicate and assemble."
Govan coughed, reminding Doctor D'Angelo of the current situation- the one he wasn't fond of. "What are we going to do with them?"

<Back tracking for lack of posting>............ As the scuttle on the Bridge started to get out of hand as the diplomats and the special package were unexpectedly beamed to the Bridge, Logan tried to persuade everyone to remain calm and complete their duties. Seeing the shaken Tovan, he tried to gain the Commander's attention to ease some of the duties he had. Undaunted, the Commander held his chair fast.
Using the Comm system, he helped delegate the medical crew with the injured. Knowing full well, that Dr. Caldwell had things in hand as the other Doctors were recovering from their ordeal. It was at the moment of Rick and the baby beaming aboard that he felt a huge weight lift from his chest. The Commodore almost broke her vow of non-emotion when the baby appeared in front of the Command Center.
Receiving a Comm from Commander Fox, put him back into perspective of the Romulan threat that still seemed to be out there. And as if there was a 'god' of space, a Romulan Major appeared at his feet. Motioning to a nearby guard, the guard restrained one of the diplomats from attacking the lifeless body of the Romulan. Assisting another guard, Logan helped lift the now "Prisoner of War" and laid him on a portable bio-bed.
As the Commodore gave her leave to attend to her family, Byrne ordered a pat down and isolation of the Romulan, until the details could be presented during the debriefing of the captured crew and delegates.
Assuming command of the Bridge, once again, he sat and tried to finish his coffee.

The Vulcan followed her CMO's gaze towards the two unconscious Romulans, though one of them was now in the process of waking up. "They will be sent to Starbase Assaillant, for the Romulan diplomats to deal with," she told him, before returning her gaze to D'Angelo.
"You will do the best you can for them, will you not? If you have reservations you must let me know and I will tend to them myself." She offered D'Angelo a supportive smile. "I am still a medical doctor, whether I have a command or not. My first profession is still that of surgeon." Her smile widened just a little. "Did you know I used to be chief medical officer on the first Vesuvius? It was when Commander Fox was still the captain."
She made note of her CMO's eyes widening at that revelation, but said nothing of it. "Believe it or not," she continued, as she walked up to Govan. "Commander Govan, as of this moment you are a prisoner under the law of the United Federation of Planets. You will be turned over to Romulan Officials upon arrival to Starbase Assaillant to where you will be sent one we dock at Bellicose. From there, you shall be turned over to your own government for suitable punishment. Your most recent acts are unworthy of a Romulan, and are dishonourable. You may have noticed by now your Honour Blade and poisoned tooth have been, respectively, removed and neutralised. You shall be unable to commit suicide and you shall not be allowed to attempt it."
Sonak stood close to the forcefield, so close she could hear the soft hum it generated at this particular level. "You and your female companion shall be transferred to the USS Devastator, and be confined there under close guard. You are charged with high treason and kidnapping and murder of Federation and Romulan diplomats. We have surviving witnesses to your proceedings. Not to mention that you endangered the life of an innocent child."
Without awaiting Govan's answer, the Vulcan commodore turned her back on him and walked back to D'Angelo. "Please take me to my husband," she requested, "I wish to see him now and spend time with him. Commander Byrne is in command of the bridge, as of fifteen minutes ago, I am off duty."

Govan remained completely still and silent during the Commodore’s speech. After beginning to wake up and realizing he was alive and on the Federation ship, the first thing he had done was search for the false tooth that would finish the job, but it was gone, along with his Honor blade. Cursing himself for his stupidity at picking up the wrong disruptor, he stared firmly at the ceiling of sickbay so as not to betray any sort of response to what was said.
At the mention of Tamir being punished as well, the Romulan’s head had snapped around to look at the Vulcan commander and tired to speak, but a coughing fit effectively kept him from speaking until the Commodore was gone. When Govan was finally able to speak again, he turned to the younger doctor, who was glaring at him, quite deservedly.
“Doctor, I know your feelings towards me, but you know Ta…” Govan stopped himself, as he’d never actually spoken her name aloud. “You know she had nothing to do with any of this. She’s a nurse, a medical professional, like you. She never did anything to any of you; she only helped care for the baby at my request. I don’t care what happens to me now, but…please…”
The plea stuck in the Major’s throat, and he was unable to finish the request though it was clear the doctor understood. Govan cast a single glance towards Tamir, who was still sleeping, before turning his face back to the ceiling and continuing to stare, unmoving. He’d done all he could, but if needed he would fight for her. She didn’t deserve any of this and had done nothing wrong.
Other than to protect Tamir, Govan would say nothing, not his name, rank, position… The Major may be captured but he was no traitor and would never be one. As a member of the Tal Shiar, he had always been the guy to take care of the dirty work. Politics were entirely uninteresting, and he had no aspirations to become a politician of any kind. Govan was a soldier who followed orders, and he would follow the order of absolute silence to his death if he had to.

Four days after crossing the neutral zone back into Federation space at low warp, the USS Vesuvius-A was on aproach to Starbase Bellicose, her home port. Fortunately, this time the repairs necessary were only minimal. Sonak was certain at least Fleet Admiral Elron would be pleased for once, when he would learn of their latest success in getting most of the Federation diplomats back alive and well.
That several, including two Romulan diplomats were killed was a minor setback. Sonak had sent a message to Starbase Assaillant to let the Romulan diplomats know they should receive two Romulan prisoners in a few days. Major Govan Echal and nurse Tamir would be sent there under heavy guard; the USS Devastator was a heavily equipped battleship designed for special duties such as this.
By this time, Jatan had been released to his quarters and was enjoying some time off from duty. He would spend this time with his adoptive and biological children, all of which called him father as they had known no other as father. Even the oldest twins, who had been four when their biological father had been killed, held little recollection of their real father, especially since their mother refused to discuss him with them.
Sonak had half a heart to order D'Angelo off duty too, but seeing the drive in the young doctor, she changed her mind and thought he would be better off remaining on duty together with Caldwell, who would report back to her the minute he thought D'Angelo would go wrong. The young doctor had come a long way, and had seen too much hurt in his short tenure aboard the Vesuvius. She hadn't liked him at first, but now she started to sympathise with him.
In the mean time, she had received reports from engineering on an experiment to increase the energy output on the ship. She had authorised the continuation of this experiment, as long as safety precautions would be upheld. "Finally, we have Bellicose in sight," she sighed as she glanced sideways at her first officer. "Commander Tovan, please take us into docking," she ordered her Vulcan navigator. "Fox, make sure sensors are on stand-by when we dock. I am certain Docking Control will let Tovan fly her in himself, but sensors will go mad if you keep them on. Kanz, power down shields and weapons, we shall not need them here."
Orders given, she beckoned her security chief to follow her into her readyroom. "I am sad to see you go commander," she spoke formally, "however Elron is a good commanding officer and a friend of mine. You go to the Black Tulip with the highest of recommendations, and I hope you shall be happy there. I have been informed that a suitable replacement for you is waiting for us at Bellicose."
Minutes later, the Vesuvius was formally powered down for maintenance and a much deserved shoreleave would begin.
