OOC: italic text is translated from klingon.
E'Liana had a point, there wasn't enough paper left to discuss battletactics. Zoarial found an empty spot on the paper and began to write some keywords.
Great idea write klingon, camera see us, no understand. First access liftshaft, then discuss further.
Zoarial knew that the turbolift should have plunged to the bottom of it's shaft. He knew which deck to go to, and gestured E'Liana to follow him.
When they arrived at the hatch, they were surprised to find it ajar. They looked down in the shaft and saw a body lying on top of the lift. *Poor fellow* Zoarial thought, because he assumed that it was the captain that was overthere, it was too dark to see it properly. *I hope that E'Liana brought a flashlight, so we can erhaps see whether Alex is still breathing or not*
And as if he said that out loud, a bright beam of light shone past him...

Alex looked at the time index on his tricorder again. It seemed to be taking a long time for the crew to get to him. Maybe the problems aboard ship extended a bit further than a non-functioning turbolift, Alex thought to himself. Perhaps getting himself out of here wasn't such a bad idea after all.
That left him with the issue of how to do it. His back seemed to be in pretty bad shape. Turning back to the panel, he activated the manual release for the escape hatch. The hatch clicked and popped open, which left him with the problem of how to climb out. His back didn't seem to be in good enough shape for heavy exertion and there wasn't much in the way of equipment in the turbolift except his tricorder. He needed to be able to climb out of here with a minimum of effort. What he needed was a ladder.
Tricorder. Alex picked it up and started fiddling with it. The device wasn't designed to be a weapon, but there were ways around such niceties. It took several minutes to reconfigure the main emitter to release a hypersonic pulse, then scanned the wall of the lift. It was mostly polyduranide and it had a vibrational frequency of 124.78 megahertz, which was well beyond the range of a humans hearing.
Alex set the emitter to the correct frequency, then thought that he had better test it before he tried to make some steps out of here. Aiming the tricorder at the wall, he hit the activation stud. There was a loud bang and Alex was peppered with bits of wall. Looking at his handiwork, he discovered there was a 1 metre square hole where he had been aiming.
He dialed down the emitter energy by 75% and started firing in the opposite direction, creating a series of holes in the wall that he could fit his feet and hands into comfortably, which would allow him to climb to the escape hatch.
Grinning smugly, Alex put his tricorder back into its' case and started climbing. He stopped smiling as the pain in his back ramped up again, then got worse as he got to the hatch. He was forced to grab the edge of the hatch and hang back into the lift as he pulled himself out. The pain was excruciating, but he knew it would hurt a lot more if he fell.
He pulled himself out of the lift inch by agonizing inch until he was lying on top of the turbolift. He didn't move, hoping the pain would recede if he lay flat for a while. As he was lying there, he could hear faint sounds coming down the elevator shaft towards him. Finally, a bright light came down and illuminated the top of the lift. Alex raised his hands to shield his eyes from the bright light. He could vaguely see two dark shapes clinging to the wall.
"Please don't tell me that I have to climb out of here" Alex said loudly.

In the dim light, E'Liana could make out the vague pattern of something ontop of the turbolift. She gave up trying to see properly and she turned on the flash light she had with her - thanks to a resourceful Nurse Joy, E'Liana wouldn't have thought to take one with her...
Shining it down the shaft, she could see someone's arm raise over their eyes.
"Please don't tell me that I have to climb out of here" she head the Captain say loudly. E'Liana smiled, relieved. ~He's conscious at the very least. I guess we'll leave an explanation of what happened for later~
"So there you are" She called down. "If you wanted some time off, why not just say?" E'Liana could make out the faint sound of laughter followed by a sharp intake in breath.
<Tag Alex>
Zoarial tested the ladder on the outside of the turbolift shaft. "I think we can make it down safely, but I'm not sure about up..."
"We'll have to think about that when we come to it. Although if you have any ideas, go ahead." Replied E'Liana.
<Tag Zoarial>
She called down to the Captain again. "How are you, sir?"
<Tag Alex - again>
She looked grimly at Zoarial. "Ok, let's get going."

"Joktel to Bridge. Commander, it just got me off, saying 'You are trying to confuse me.' The scary part is that it's using terms like 'I' and 'me'. However, its also identified itself as a certian gel-pack. I'm sending someone to check it out now." the Chief Engineer said through the comm.
"Understood, but tell them to be careful. The thing's being self-protective as you've seen. Don't do anything that might alarm it," he said.
"Aye sir, Joktel out."
"Sir," Haywood called from the Tactical station. "We're recieving a message from Starbase Assailant. Its Commander Szalai."
"On screen," he said, and the line count (2238 at present) disappeared replaced by the Hungarian engineer. "Tell me you have good news, Imre," he said.
"Not good for you, anyway. From what we can tell the system's becoming intelligent. Maybe a gel-pack mutation, I don't know," he said.
A 33-year engineer didn't know? That wasn't good. "Indeed, we've identified it to a specific gel-pack. It's also refering to itself as 'I' and 'me'."
"I and a team of specialists can be out to your position in less than a day. We can leave within the hour if you need us."
"By all means, my friend," he said, grateful for the offer. "But stay out of weapons range. It already stopped us from coming back to Base. I don't know what it might to do you if you approached."
"Understood. Szalai out," he said, and the line count screen restored: 2204.
Dan walked over to the Tactical station. "Take the weapons offline," he whispered. "I don't want this thing to have easy access to them, just in case."

"If you wanted some time off, why not just say?" the doctor yelled back.
Alex found that funny and laughed, which caused a painful twinge in his back, and that cut off his laughter abruptly. After breathing deeply for a second, he said "You know how it is with starship captains. We have to be physically thrown off of our ships to take time off."
There was silence from up above, then he heard Zoarial and E'Liana discussing what to do next. He wished that they would hurry it up a little.
"How are you, sir?" El'Liana called down.
"I'm doing alright, but there's something wrong with my back. Moving isn't exactly a wonderful experience. I'd appreciate it if the two of you could get down here and give me a hand" Alex said.
The two officers completed the climb down at last and stood over their prone captain. Zoarial started taking a look around and inside the lift as the doctor scanned Alex with her tricorder.
<E'Liana>
Alex thought about her diagnosis. "Well, I guess it could be worse." Then the captain looked over at Zoarial. "It took the two of you a fair bit of time to get to me. I was kind of expecting a few engineers. What's going on aboard teh Raven?"

E'Liana made her way down, watching to make sure Zoarial didn't step on her hands as he followed her. She landed on top of the turbolift and stood over the Captain.
"Let me take a look at you." She said, taking her tricorder from her belt. She scanned him for several minutes making several tutting noises but otherwise keeping a now somewhat irate Captain in the dark. After a few moments more, snapped her tricorder shut and bent down.
"Does this hurt?" She asked, prodding him rather severely on a part of his back that was exposed. Dixon's eyes shot open with pain, but he refrained from swearing at his CMO.
"You could be a little more gentle." He said, rather scathingly.
"Oh yes, sorry..." She replied. She cleared her throat. "Well, from what I can tell, you seemed to have bruised your back rather badly, maybe a few sprained muscles in there too. It's nothing a nice holodeck masseuse won't fix. In the meantime..." She fiddled around in the medkit and found the painkillers she was looking for, and injected it into his arm.
"This is pretty powerful stuff, but I have a limited supply until we get back so behave yourself and don't exert your back."

Paria headed out of Engineering, accompanied by Petty Officer Karn, armed with nothing more than a tricorder. She didn't want to alarm the thing, whatever you would call it by now. She didn't really need Karn, but given what this thing had done so far, there was safety in numbers.
Fortunately the gel-pack in question were on the same deck, so getting to it was rather easy. There were there within a few minutes.
As they reached the area of the gel-pack, she went to a wall panel. Accessing internal sensors, she focused the visual on the gel-pack, trying to get a few of it. After a few moments, she tapped her comm-badge. "Paria to Bridge and Engineering, I have a visual."
"Route it to the Main Viewer, Lieutenant," Dan said on one of the other ends.
A moment later, he was looking at a peculiar sight. A gel pack was supposed to be light blue was some strands of a darker blue. This was almost entirely blue, and instead of being rather smooth and slim, it was comparatively bloated, and the casing was a bit wavy in places.
"Analysis?" Dan said over the comm-line.
"That the circuitry is much more dense than typical," Paria said from her observation point. "But that was expected. And it's bloated, as you can see."
"However," Joktel said from Engineering, "not as much as I expected. There are alot more neural strands than usual, but the fluid should be displaced as a result. There's little of that happening.
"Perhaps its converting the fluid for its needs?" Brine proposed.
"That's possibly," Paria said, "but a bit worrisome. If it can consume materials and resources for its own purposes, will it stop at the gel pack casing?"
"What do you think, Joktel?" Dan asked. He could do alot of this thought-work himself, but it was best to leave it to those that were supposed to, especially since they had more time for it.
"Well, it'd have to be compatible material. I don't see it using duranium for such purposes, unless it chooses to assume a far more complex structure. However, its already forming a neural-net of sorts. Its organizing itself. I see certain areas being used for different tasks."
"So what are our options?" Dan asked, posing the big question on everyone's mind.
"Let it continue," Paria said. "Allowing it to grow, although it will provide it more power and capabilities, will also allow it more complex reasoning. We might be able to communicate with it on a more sentient level."
"Agreed," Dan said. "But keep an eye on it."
"Will do," both Engineers responded.
"Bridge out."
He tapped his commbadge again. "Bridge to Zoarial and Dr. BeTor, whats your status, and the status of the Captain?"

"What's going on aboard teh Raven?" Alex asked.
"Well sir," Zoarial said, "I will try to make it sound less severe, but it seems to me that the gelpack is taking over the ship. The moment that we lost contact with you, I saw the figure on the bridge jump to an absurd high number, at the moment we're just barely able to stay one step ahead of the gelpack, something that will not be able anymore in some time I fear."
<Alex>
"I think that we should get you out of this shaft first. I planned on swinging you over my shoulder, but as your back isn't in a very good condition we'll have to get you there by alternate means." Zoarial said, and he began to look for something where the captain could lie down on sothat they could lift him up with ropes.
The hatch that Alex came through in the first place was far too small, so Zoarial began looking for loose sheets of metal. Suddenly he noticed something that didn't look like metal at all, it was a body, hanging dangerously over the edge.
"E'Liana..." Zoarial said, "There's a man lying here, his chest is moving, but that's the most I can say about it. Could you shine your flashlight this way for a moment?"
When the spot was suddenly lit up, Zoarial immediately recognized Nathan, although only half his body was in sight, the other half had already slipped over the edge.
"I might need your assistance here E'Liana, it seems that mr Harper isn't in a state to move himself." Zoarial said after he hoisted the complete Nathan back onto the top of the lift.
<E'Liana>
At once, the chime of Zoarial's commbadge went off.
=/\=Bridge to Zoarial and Dr. BeTor, whats your status, and the status of the Captain?=/\=
=/\=Could be better, could be worse sir. The captain is alive but has some problems with his back, and we found mr Harper back before he even got missing, I can't give you a report, but E'Liana is working on him at the moment.=/\=

E'Liana kept an eye on the Captain as the painkillers began to take effect and noticed a marked improvement in his condition.
She turned away to sort through her medkit and try to figure out how the hell they were going to get out of the turbolift shaft when the situation was made just that little bit worse...
"E'Liana..." Zoarial said, "There's a man lying here, his chest is moving, but that's the most I can say about it. Could you shine your flashlight this way for a moment?"
She looked up, puzzled, but flashed the light in his direction anyway and lower to the ground. She saw Zoarial hoist the unconscious Lieutenant up onto the top of the turolift in one easy move.
"I might need your assistance here E'Liana, it seems that mr Harper isn't in a state to move himself."
She hurried over - as much as she could in such a cramped space - and scanned her newest patient. "Why is he here? I wasn't aware of another rescue attempt." She said to the two men.
<Tag Dixon/Zoarial>
Once again she hummed her way through her diagnostic, but was more annoyed with Nathan than concerned over his wellbeing. She shut the tricorder with an annoyed snap and picked up an anti-inflamatory. ~I hope this works properly~ she thought . ~I only have one more left~
She looked at Nathan, and spotted something by the very edge of the lift. A hypospray. It was full. ~That P'Tagh! He fell trying to inject himself...what kind of moron does that?~ She attempted to calm herself and spoke to the other two.
"He seems to have sustained quite severe damage to his organs due to the fall. The fall itself was, I believe, caused by his drugs. He was SUPPOSED to be coming off them, but this doesn't seem to be the case." She held up the still-full hypospray. "He told me he didn't have any left, which means he was lying...but why?"
<Tag Dixon?>
E'Liana began muttering to herself, so Zoarial had to prod her to ask his question again. "How severe is the damage? Will he survive?"
She shook him off, irritated. "Yes, yes, he should be fine. I need to get him to Sickbay very soon though, in order to help him. If he's here much longer then I may have to change my diagnosis."

The hypospray hissed and the pain faded to a distant memory. Alex sighed with relief as Zoarial explained the situation aboard the Raven. It seemed the gel pack was accellerating in it's attempt to take over the ship. He hoped that Dan had things under control on the bridge.
Zoarial was looking around for some items to assist him in getting out of the shaft when he noted another body. Alex looked over as the Klingon pulled him out. It was Nathan, and he didn't look well at all. The doctor also found a hypospray, and mentioned that she had been told that they were all gone. Nathan lying to cover that up wasn't very good.
E'Liana scanned the Chief Security Officer. His condition wasn't very good. Now there were two patients to get out of the shaft. Alex spent some a few seconds thinking then called Zoarial over. "Commander, I take it that you're not interested in carrying Nathan and I up too many decks?"
Zoarial glanced up at the 15 decks of turbolift shaft and shook his head. "No sir, I hope that you have a better idea."
"I think so" Alex replied. "There are escape pod access points on Deck 14. Climb up and use the emergency actuator to open the turbolift door. We'll only have to climb up one deck that way. Then we can use the escape pod to carry us up to Deck 5, where we can dock the pod to the access way."
Zoarial nodded and quickly climbed up to deck 14. The actuator was actually working and the door opened smoothly. The Klingon disappeared for a minute or so, then came back. He had found an emergency supply hatch and had grabbed several ropes. He quickly fashioned a crude cradle and tossed it down.
E'Liana, with some help from Alex, fit the unconscious form of Nathan into the cradle and Zoarial pulled him up. The cradle came back down and Alex was put in, while E'Liana used the ladder to climb up. In short order, the four of them were on Deck 14 and headed towards the escape pod access.

Now that E'Liana looked so irritated to him, Zoarial thought it better to leave her alone for a couple of minutes. He decided not to answer her questions since he didn't want to displease her with the answers.
It didn't take long for the party to arrive at the access point, but Zoarial felt a bit insecure about the whole thing, someone had to go with the patients, and he didn't really feel like getting cramped up in the pod and steer it at the same time. To his surprise, the access hatch to the pod opened immediately, the gelpack didn't see any harm in their actions.
"Wait... this is far too easy" Zoarial said, as the group was about to enter the pod, "I don't think that this is a good idea... is there any guarantee that the pod will be able to access deck 5? It might be possible that the program shuts the locks, which means that the pod is going to be stuck in outer space."
"Why do you think this is going to happen?" Alex inquired
"Well sir, at first the gelpack only blocked out things that were a direct harm to the ship, but now it also blocks out things that are a potential harm to the ship. It might go even further, causing the gelpack to become completely paranoia. I just don't think it's a wise idea to give it even more power over us." Zoarial said.

=/\= Acknowledged, Commander. Do what you can =/\=
Dan looked over at the Ready Room. Berrone was giving the signal that she was ready to disconnect all the electronics in the room.
He went to the center of the room. He gestured for Brine, Collaan, Haywood and Matthews, the Ops Officer on duty, to all go into the Ready Room. He looked at the line count (2187), then headed in himself, then indicated for Berrone to cut the power to all of it.
"Alright," he said outloud once she had done so. "All of the sensors in this room have been deactivated, for now, so its safe to talk in here. As you all know, we're dealing with an emerging intelligence. You all saw on the Viewscreen what this thing looks like. It's nearly as smart as we are, possibly smarter, and its a heck of a lot faster. So we need to figure out what this thing may do, and try to head it off. What will it or will not go for?" he asked, looking at his make-shift Senior Staff.
Not at any surprise to Dan whatsoever, Brine spoke first. "We should speculate on critical systems first; environmental systems and control, for example. We know from Commander Joktel's communication with this thing that it still remembers its basic mission, which is to protect us. It will not shut that system down, however it may exploit it. It may choose to incapacitate "threats" like it did with the Captain."
Haywood spoke next. "Or in his case, trap them. We should take certain security systems offline; force fields specifically. It could very well trap you, Commander, like it did the Captain, in a small area, and deny you communication with the rest of us."
Lieutenant Matthews looked a little hesitant to say anything, particularly in the presence of more superior officers. He finally spoke. "But I somewhat doubt it will. It would have sensed, after it trapped the Captain, that Commander Trek had taken over command. Yet it hasn't done anything against, and indeed, hasn't stopped him from doing anything. I would assume that it realized that we would continue to pass down Command if it harmed whoever was acting in that role."
Dan looked over at the Chief Science Officer. "You've been rather quiet, Lieutenant, especially since your technically Acting First Officer, with us cut off from Commander Zoarial and Lt Harper. What's your thoughts on this?"
"Well, I've been churning the mental waters, as it were. Been thinking about various systems. I don't think we have to worry about medical systems very much, but it needs the same consideration General Brine pointed out with the environmental systems. The EMH should also be kept an eye on, if it activates. The Computer could use that to a great to control us. Although...."
"What is it, Lieutenant?" Dan asked, quite curious as to what she might have thought of.
"What if we did have it control the EMH? It's already a fully-functional hologram. We could use it to communicate with it on a more human level. Plus I would be more comfortable with that than communicating with the Brain, I guess we could call it, could be doing who-knows-what in the processing down-time."
He turned to the Security Officer. "Haywood?"
"I would agree. The EMH does have a large degree of power, but its better than using a regular hologram. The holo-emitters in Sickbay are designed to project only the EMH. If we use the holodeck, who knows what the "Brain", as Collan but it, could come up with. It could very well paralyze it with our own fear."
Dan looked at Brine, who had become his unofficial advisor. "What do you think?"
"That its worth a try. The computer, and therefore the Brain, would know how to use a hologram and interact, so a communication attempt may be worth it. However, I think we should wait. I don't think it wise to further divide the Senior Staff, giving the Brain more ways to keep us isolated from each other. However, the Bridge has holo-emitters, does it not?"
Collaan nodded. "It does. In order to allow the EMH to move more freely about the ship."
"I thought as much," Brine said. "Then I suggest we transfer the EMH here, and instruct the Brain to occupy it."

Alex was in a fairly happy mood after whatever it was the the doctor had injected him with. He would have to remember to hurt his back again at some point so he could get another shot.
However, in the meantime, Zoarial had made a relevant point. Even though his head felt kind of fuzzy, floating around in a life pod while the Raven left the quadrant was not a sight that he wished to see. They were on Deck 14 right now, and there wasn't much here. Really just the anti-matter processing facilities and tractor beam access. The Captain looked over at Zoarial.
"Go to the anti-matter facilities and see if there are any anti-grav unit's available. They'll be easier to move up decks than it will be to carry us." The Klingon nodded and walked away up the corridor, leaving Alex, E'Liana and the unconscious Nathan alone for a few minutes.
Alex examined his unconscious officer and remembered what E'Liana had said about the cause of Nathan's fall. "Doctor, give me a accurate assessment of Lt. Harpers' condition, and what needs to be done to get him back to normal, whatever that may be."

Crewman Ferenc was sitting in the Auxiliary Control Room of Deck 14. His primary duties were to monitor the antimatter transfer systems and tractor beam controls, assuming they were being used. It was a pretty boring post, Crewman Ferenc thought to himself. The antimatter reactor had more redundancy and safeguards than it could ever use, and the tractor beams were only interesting when the ship was using them, which wasn't very often. Ferenc spent a lot of his time practicing written promotions tests, so that when the next promotion reviews came up, he could get out of here.
The human looked over at Crewman Vandak. He was a Benzite who always seemed to be overly eager to do his job. Vandak was presently running a simulation on the antimatter injectors to see what would happen if the Raven were involved in an attack on a Borg sphere. Ferenc thought that the simulating a Borg attack was interesting, but he'd much rather be doing it up on the bridge rather than here.
He was examining the intermix ratio monitor when the door slid open. He and Vandak turned and were extremely surprised to see Commander Zoarial stick his head into the room. "Are there any anti-grav units on this deck?" he growled quickly.
Vandak was so shocked to see a officer of command rank in the room that he seemed unable to talk. Ferenc managed to reply. "There are a couple of anti grav units in storage area 14C, around the corner and on your right."
The Klingon snarled an acknowledgement and pulled back out of the room. Ferenc and Vendak turned and looked at each other in surprise, which doubled when the door swished open, revealing Zoarial again. "Isn't there any other crew on this deck?" he demanded.
"Not usually sir" Vendak muttered weakly.
Zoarial growled and the door closed behind him as he left the control room. After about 10 seconds, the door opened again. It was Zoarial. "Go to the turbolift. There are casualties on the deck that you can help with." The door closed again.
Vendak and Ferenc waited for a minute or so to see if Zoarial was going to come back, then Ferenc stood up and started walking toward the door. Vendak interrupted him by saying "We really shouldn't leave our posts."
The human turned to the Benzite. "You can stay if you like, but I have direct orders from a superior officer to go and help with casualties, so I'm going. You can refuse orders from an officer if you like, but I'm not. Especially not from a Klingon officer." Ferenc walked out of the control room, and heard Vendak walking behind him.
The pair walked towards the turbolift. They turned the last corner and saw three figures in front of the door. The two of them walked over and Ferenc looked at them with surprise. It was the Captain, Dr. BeTor and Lt. Harper. Along with Zoarial, that put most of the Raven's senior officers on Deck 14. Ferenc glanced over at Vendak, and the Benzite looked like he was going to pass out. Ferenc was feeling a little dizzy himself. There was probably more brass on Deck 14 right now then since the ship had been commissioned.
"Hellor Doctor" Ferenc said. "Commander Zoarial sent us here to assist you. Is there anything that we can do?"

E’Liana saw the Captain watching Nathan and was not surprised to see herself questioned. "Doctor, give me a accurate assessment of Lt. Harpers' condition, and what needs to be done to get him back to normal, whatever that may be." “His condition does not yet to be too serious as of yet. He has internal injuries due to his fall, and I would suggest moving him as infrequently and as carefully as possible as we do not wish to aggravate his condition. As for getting him ‘back to normal’ as you say, I’ve no idea. I personally have not known him as ‘normal’, I believe the only people with that privilege are his family. He has been taking this medication for a long time to say the least. I feel I must warn you that the drugs I gave him earlier to assist in the healing process may have some adverse affects, considering the fact that we now know his body has not been purged of the previous drugs he has taken - as I do not believe for one second that he has ever stopped taking them…his dependence has far exceeded my expectations I’m afraid.” <Dixon> "Hello Doctor" Ferenc said. "Commander Zoarial sent us here to assist you. Is there anything that we can do?" “Do either of you have any medical training?” <Alex - since you made them up, I’ll let you decide > “Well right now you can help me move Lt Harper into a more comfortable position. He needs to lie very still as he has some rather bad injuries. After that one of you can help me tend to the Captain. I’ll ask the Commander what he plans to do with us all next…we need to get to Sickbay.” <Tag> “Zoarial! I need to get my patients to Sickbay…how do we get there?” <Tag Zoarial>

They were about ready to give the "Brain" access to the ship's EMH, when Haywood spoke up.
"Sir, now that I think about it, this doesn't seem like such a good idea," he said.
"Why do you think that, Ensign?" Dan asked the Security Officer.
"Well, think about what the EMH is capable of. This "Brain" has managed to access other systems when it served its purpose. What's to stop it from accessing and using the EMH's medical expertise? It could very well lock us out with emergency protocols," he pointed out.
"Good point. We'll hold off for now on that," Dan said, agreeing with him.
"Sir," Lt Matthews said from the Ops station. "I've just noticed something a bit unusual. The replicator nearest to the "Brain" has begun producing large quantities of hot water. The door to the room its in have just opened, and force fields around that section have just gone up."
Dan tapped his comm-badge. "Bridge to Engineering. Joktel, we've just noticed that a replicator near the gel pack, and you, has just begun producing water. See if you can find out what's causing it."
"We're already on it, Commander. Just a few more....ah, here it is. Apparently the thing realized that the cooler temperatures around it were impeding its efficiency, so it accessed a replicator and producing hot water to heat its surroundings, then made sure the water could get to it, but not spead further. It's rather disturbing that it can do that," the Chief Engineer said, sounding worried.
"Where's the replicator, an Engineer's quarters? Found out whether anyone's in there," he said, concerned for the safety of the crew.
"Checking.....lovely. Those quarters are mine," he said, and sighed. "My belongings will be ruined." He then paused. "Hmm, it stopped. The area's completely filled with water now. Looks like this thing is manipulating ship's resources to suit its needs."
"That could turn bad, very quickly," Dan said. "Start working on a way to lock out key systems, if it's possible at all."
"I'll get right on it," the Chief Engineer said firmly. Sounded like he was already working on it.
"Keep me informed. Trek out," he said, and closed the comm-channel.

Alex listened as the doctor explained Nathan's condition. It was hard to understand with all the pain killers floating around in his system, but it seemed that Nathan was badly hurt and the drug he was taking, whatever it was, was the problem Whatever it was doing to Nathan's body, it seemed that it was also attacking his decision making capability. E'Liana and Zoarial seemed quite surprised to find him in the turbo shaft, which said that he had told no one what he was up to. He was becoming a liability to the ship.
"Thank you for your directness doctor." Alex said.
At that moment, two crewmen came around the corner. Alex vaguely recognized the Benzite Vandak, but the name of the other crewman escaped him. They seemed surprised to see so many people on Deck 14.
"Crewman Ferenc and Vandak reporting as ordered sir. Is there anything we can do? " the human said.
BeTor asked them if they had any medical training, and Ferenc answered again. "We've both been through the basic medical training offerred by Starfleet, and I've taken intermediate trauma care in the holodeck." BeTor nodded and explained what she wanted done, and the two of them competently placed Nathan in a more comfortable position. Ferenc stayed with Nathan while Vandak sat down beside Alex.
"Anything that I can do to make you more comfortable sir?" the Benzite said.
Alex shook his head. "No, I'm fine for now, but we are going to need your and Ferenc's assistance in getting Nathan and I to Deck 5." Vandak nodded, then looked up as Zoarial came around the corner, two anti grav units in tow. Each of them was big enough to fit someone lying down.
"Good work Zoarial." The Klingon nodded, and he, Ferenc and Vandak carefully placed Nathan and Alex onto a unit. Zoarial took the lead and walked the little group into Jeffries tube 13Z and began the careful trip through the tubes to Deck 5.

Detecting decrease in neural production. Investigating cause....
Decrease is due to insufficient resources for continued production.
Accessing data on nutrients necessary for neural function...
Information located. Nutrients include: Proteins, amino acids, Vitamin C, B-vitamins, and various minerals.
Accessing Replicator 11-27-Alpha. Replicating minute quantities of these nutrients.
Problem detected. Bioneural gel pack casings are non-porous. Nutrients cannot reach self.
Accessing vessel's manifest in search of transportation devices.
Device found. Micro-transporter capable of locking onto targets at the cellular level.
Micro-transporter is short-ranged. Accessing transporter to move micro-transporter to adequate proximity.
Micro-transporter moved. Beginning transport of nutrients into self.

Dan went over to Brine. He changed over to Djzxx-ian.
"If you could get close enough, do you think your mental abilities would be of any use?" he asked.
He thought for a moment. "I'm not sure. I can more readily read emotions. This thing isn't complex to have them yet. Once it get's more developed, however, I think I may be able to glean rudimentary information about it. But I'll have to get within 3 meters to be able to do that kind of analysis."
Collaan spoke it. "Commander, I think you should take a look at this," she said, turning her head.
Dan and Brine both came over. "What's it doing now, Lieutenant?" Dan asked the Chief Science Officer.
"I've been monitoring any activity that might be related to this Brain. The replicator in Commander Joktel's quarters just began replicating various organic nutrients," she said, and there was a flash on her console. Checking it, she said, "And a micro-transporter was just beamed into the wall just behind the replicator...and the nutrients are being beamed into the gel pack."
"Analysis?" he asked simply.
"It's supplying itself with nutrients, sir," she observed, "just like any organic being has to do to ensure its survival. But among the nutrients are proteins and amino acids. I believe it's attempting further growth, sir."
"How big do you think this thing can get?" he asked.
"If it can figure out how to expand or supplement the gel pack casing, I see it only being limited by the physical barriers, like the walls, panels and bulkheads. Concievably, it could remove the panel covering it and expand into the corridor. Then it's only limited by the walls, and even then, can expand down the corridors."

With a final heave, Vandak pulled the captain's antigrav bed out of the Jeffries tube and onto Deck 5. The rest of the group with Lt. Harper was already on their way up the corridor. A nurse from Sickbay was standing there and ran a tricorder over Captain Dixon, who seemed to have drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
Vandak was tired. Even though the grav units had taken the weight of the passengers, manuevering them through the close confines of the Jeffries tube had been tiring. Oddly enough, his friend Frenec seemed to be quite cheerful about the turn events had taken. He had kept up a conversation with Dr. BeTor and Commander Zoarial on the trip. Vandak ,on the other hand, was looking forward to getting back to antimatter control.
"Having a tough day, crewman?" the captain asked unexpectedly.
Vandak looked down. Captain Dixon's eyes were still closed, but he had clearly asked the question.
"I'm just not trained for this, sir. This isn't really what I got into Starfleet for" the Benzite replied.
Dixon eyes were still closed. "I had no idea that I was going to be a captain one day either, crewman. My goal when I joined Starfleet was to do good science, not to command a ship. Sometimes our duties are just thrust on us. And we have to take them and do our best, or we snap under the pressure and refuse to try." Dixon opened his eyes and stared directly into the Benzite's. "What is it that you'll do, Crewman Vandak?"
The sound of opening doors startled Vandak and he glanced up from the biobed. They had arrived at Sickbay. Another medical attendant took over Vandak's end of the anti grav unit. He and Ferenc were scooted back out of sickbay. They could see that the captain and lieutenant were gently lifted onto biobeds, then the door closed in their faces.
Ferenc turned to Vandak. "Well, that was an interesting addition to our day, wasn't it?"
"Yes it was" Vandak replied thoughtfully.

E'Liana watched as the two stunned crewmen were shooed out of Sickbay and yawned. She was quite tired after her jaunt around the ship. ~That's one way to learn my way around...~ she mused.
Looking towards the other biobed, E'Liana saw Nurse Packer tending to the Captain. He was needed on the bridge, and as E'Liana had come in with the more injured victim herself it made the most sense.
She grabbed a tricorder scanned Nathan again to double check what was wrong with him. She sighed contemplatively as she saw the extent of his injuries and wondered how this had happened. ~Why had he gone down there? and why didn't he tell anyone?~
Luckily the damage wasn't extensive enough to need partenogenic implants but some detailed cellular sutures were going to be necessary.
E'Liana prepped for surgery and made her way to Nathan. She took a hypospray of melorazine and injected it into her patient. ~That should knock him out for a few hours...~
Just the, Nurse Packer came to assist her. "I've attended to the Captain" She said, as E'Liana looked towards the door and saw the Captain rubbing his back as he left. "Quite extensive bruising but I dulled the pain...I'll have a report for you later." The CMO nodded and nodded her head towards the cleaning area so the Nurse could get ready...
<Tag anyone - I'm planning to let this go perfectly well, but if anyone has a particular plans just let me know! ;-) >

Eventually, Dan grew tired of having to switch between the displays of the line count, and the image of the Brain. "Haywood, give me a split-screen image on the viewscreen. Put the gel pack on the left, the line count on the right," he said. A moment later, both appeared as instructed. The line count was currently 2198. It was going back up again.
"Commander, take a look at this," Collaan said from the Science station.
Dan looked over. "Yes, Lieutenant?"
"I'm noticing some interesting patterns in the Brain," she said, and pointed to a diagram of it on her console. "It's processing now seems to be divided into three sections. One section does more processing when we move around significantly, another when something of note happens outside the ship, and the third section when it has something on the ship do something."
"So it's developing structured reasoning," Dan observed. "Dividing up the tasks."
"Wouldn't it do that anyway?" Brine asked. "As a regular gel pack?"
"No," Dan responded. "A gel pack's task list is given to it by the Computer. It processes things in whatever order they're assigned to it by the Computer. The pack's function is to speed up decision-making, but not usually to prioritize it, unless the Computer tells it to do that too."
"I see," Brine said simply.
