The sudden demand coming over the com channel caught him off guard. He went into automatic mode and assumed his station. He was already looking for the other ship when he caught it on the senors. It appeared Commander Garrett was right the first ship was the power it was evenly matched Jefferson, if it came to a fight it would be a toss up the problem being they wouldn't not with the childern on board.
He looked up at and the admiral with out saying a word he adjusted the heading to put the ship on the view screen and to make sure they could responded if that was called for. " Commander Garrett there weapons are powered according to my readings they are a even match for us. The problem being is I'm pretty sure they have childern on board doesn't make sense to give up your tatical edge unless you have a nother card to play" <Tag Garrett>

As her shift came to an end, Marina was glad to see someone come to relieve her and take over watching the doctor and his family. “Make sure someone comes to take over the watch next shift before you go off duty, and pass the same message on to your relief as well,” the Ensign requested, hoping that would help ensure their safety. On her way out, she passed the same message along to the two new guards on either side of the door in the corridor outside of sickbay. It was all she could do.
Heading back to her quarters, the security officer was tired and irritated, never a good combination. It bothered her greatly that it seemed that her superior was so incompetent as to remove guard on a man and his family that were still in danger, let alone going against orders without informing his superiors of the change or even checking in to make sure they approved. Not only was it not a smart move, but it was also a dangerous one, especially for Nathan. In fact, it nearly cost him his life.
As soon as she stepped into her room, Marina ditched the jacket and boots, hating the fact that uniforms were not only uncomfortable but also not very fashionable. Half an hour later, Ensign Garrett had taken a quick shower, changed into a more comfortable pair of pants and shirt, and had redone her hair and makeup. Quickly replicating a plate of nachos and a beer, she collapsed onto the couch and began to seriously contemplate her current dilemma, contemplating action and inaction.
If she did and said nothing, the problem could potentially take care of itself, but not necessarily before another bad move was made that put people’s lives at risk. If she said something, it could have a positive influence by protecting and potentially saving lives, but it could also blow up in her face and make her not very popular, a fate she found terribly undesirable. The last thing she wanted to do was upset her fellow officers and go on some sort of black list, but it was so shallow to risk other people just for popularity’s sake, but it was more than that. It was her professional reputation that was potentially on the line, not to mention it could affect Megan too.
Sighing, Marina slumped back against the couch and put her feet up. She wasn’t sure what she was going to do yet, but she’d come to a decision eventually. For now, she just wanted to relax for a minute and think. She considered talking to her sister about it, but that was almost harder to decide on than her original problem, since Megan was also the First Officer and talking to her was practically making a decision. Finally deciding to try not to think about it for a little while, Ensign Garrett accessed her musical database and played a recording of one of the latest concerts by one of her favorite bands and tried to enjoy her snack, thinking that she felt like having pizza a little bit later, as she closed her eyes and simply enjoyed the music.

"The freighter we’ve been following is only a distraction, though we might be able to use it. Only a handful of officers are onboard. If we were to take a small boarding team, we could capture it and send a distress signal to lure the other ship in," Cyle suggested, as he and Lieutenant Torad arrived on the bridge, clearly getting along.
Considering the options for a moment, Megan agreed that was the best option. “I agree, Major. Select one of your men, gear up, and head to the transporter room. I will contact Lieutenant Commander Berelli and have him command the mission.”
<Tag Cyle – we can back post this mini-mission when you get back if you’d like>
As Cyle and Torad left to prepare, Megan headed down to the team’s command center. While it was tempting to lead this mission herself, she had decided it best to allow the team to handle it. After all, that was what they did best. Even though she had the training and was more than capable of it, purely tactical missions that required mostly force were less her area of expertise. Besides, allowing the team more to do and giving them some freedom would help her earn their trust and keep them happy. Arriving in the makeshift center, the three officers stopped what they were doing as she entered and moved straight toward Vince. “I want you to lead a small team consisting of Lieutenant Torad, our SMO, and another Marine to the small ship nearby. The goal is to capture the crew, commandeer the ship, and send out a distress call to lure in the primary target. The rest of the team can remain here and serve as your support. They’re gearing up in the armory now, so report there.”
After a moment’s pause as he processed this information, the Lieutenant Commander simply replied, “Yes, Ma’am,” and with a quick glance toward the rest of his team, headed for the door. Megan had every faith in him and in Cyle as well, but in that moment, Commander Garrett wished she was going and was leading the mission.
Turning to the two remaining team members, the engineer and the science officer, Megan knew they probably felt a bit left out, but she felt more comfortable knowing they were in the background relaying sensor information and guiding the team on the small vessel. “I assume you already have sensor access to the vessel and are working on infiltrating their computer systems,” she stated rather than giving any unnecessary orders to a team that already knew exactly what they were doing here.
“Yes, we do have clear sensor resolution onboard the freighter, and I have nearly infiltrated their main computer systems,” Lieutenant T’Haren replied calmly, as the engineer remained quiet. He looked a lot less happy than his Vulcan counterpart about being left behind, so Megan decided to give him something else to do as well.
“Lieutenant Wilson, I want you to coordinate with Commander T’Ress, our Chief Engineer, to identify the technology of the ship. From what we’ve seen from these people, they use a wide array of different technologies and incorporate it into their ships. Whatever you can learn about the freighter may help us in a confrontation with the main ship. It may end up making a very big difference,” Megan requested.
“Yes, Ma’am,” Raymond replied, looking maybe a little more placated than before. Leaving them to make the arrangements and handle the support on their own, the First Officer headed back to the bridge, confident that the mission would be over, and a success, very soon. Given the skills of those involved and the seemingly low status and secondary nature of the freighter, she didn’t foresee any complications.
Arriving on the bridge, Megan first moved to update the Admiral and Captain on the current situation. “A small team is going ahead and commandeering the freighter to try and lure the primary target back. Hopefully, they still have the children onboard and we will be able to recover them quickly,” Commander Garrett informed them, hoping that this was true, especially for the sake of Captain Reynolds and Nathan.

Within a few minutes, the mission was set to begin and the command to energize was given. Now, the bridge went silent as everyone waited to hear the news. She knew that there was an open commlink between the team on the ship and the rest of the team in the command center, and Megan was sorely tempted to hack that line and route it to her, but she knew that wouldn’t demonstrate trust, and it would also make it nearly impossible for her not to get tempted to directly interfere, so she waited along with the rest of the bridge crew for the report. Seven minutes in, which felt like an eternity, they received a hail from Lieutenant Commander Berelli.
=/\=Berelli to Jefferson, the ship is secure. We are prepared to take the crew into custody and are about to initiate the distress call,=/\= Vince reported, and as he was speaking, the relief officer at ops confirmed that a distress signal was being sent.
“Good work, Commander,” Megan replied, “Coordinate with the transporter room to get the prisoners transferred to our brig and return to the Jefferson. We’ll send a skeleton crew over to keep up appearances for the primary vessel, Garrett out.” Glancing over at Captain Reynolds and the Admiral, Megan added, “Now we wait.”
~
With the successful capture of the freighter, Raymond Wilson decided it was time to follow through on Commander Garrett’s orders. As much as he had hated being left behind during the operation, especially in lieu of a couple of Marines, he had to admit to being excited at the prospect of analyzing this amalgam of technology, and working with Commander T’Ress didn’t seem quite as bad as being replaced by Marines on a tactical mission. After all, an engineer was an engineer, albeit on different levels. “Wilson to T’Ress, Commander Garrett suggested that perhaps we could work together to identify the technology employed by the freighter in an effort to be better prepared for an encounter with the primary ship. Perhaps we could get together and compare notes on what we’ve discovered so far?” Raymond asked.

They had been waiting for what felt like days, when in reality, it hadn’t even been a full day when the massive Bolian warship had suddenly decloaked nearby and they had been hailed. "U.S.S. Jefferson, lower your shields and prepare to be boarded. You are out gunned. Give up now!" the obviously confident commander demanded.
Raising her eyebrows at the cockiness of the man, Megan glanced back at Valad, happy to have their primary crew back on duty. Cyle was a tactical, and while he was more than capable, Ensign Orlov’s performance continued to bother her greatly. “Commander Garrett, their weapons are powered. According to my readings they are an even match for us. The problem being, I am pretty sure they have children onboard. Doesn't make sense to give up your tactical edge unless you have another card to play," the helmsman reported, and Commander Garrett had to agree with him.
“Garrett to Berelli, prepare your team to infiltrate the warship and report to transporter room two,” Megan ordered, before addressing the rest of the bridge. “We need to find a way to penetrate their shields and get that team onboard. I need everyone doing everything they can to make that happen, while I try and stall for extra time. Contact Commander T’Ress in engineering and have him working on this as well.”
<Tag Bridge/J’Varr>
With everyone frantically working on the problem, Megan nodded to Valad to open a channel, and as the face of the human commander appeared on the screen, she placed a smile on her face that belied the situation. “Aren’t you jumping the gun a bit?” she questioned, standing comfortably in the center of the bridge. “You know as well as I do that our ships are evenly matched. It’s a clear toss up as to who’d win a fight, and that means a lot of damage and a lot of casualties on both sides. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather avoid that if possible. We also both know that you have something onboard that you took from us, and there’s no reason that you would have done that except to gain something in return, and frankly, we are at a loss as to what that might be, since you seemed to skip the demand. If you tell us what exactly it is that you want, and it is within our ability to grant it, perhaps we can arrange an exchange and avoid any additional unpleasantness,” Commander Garrett suggested keeping her voice calm, pleasant, and almost familiar, as if she were dealing with a close friend or family member, and this was an ongoing joke.

OOC: Ok, I think I've got everything caught up and tied together for the most part. Sorry about the length!

As he watched Commander Garrett buy more time he went to work on finding a hole in there shields. As he kept scanning he wasn't coming up with anything which was odd it seemed like the alien ship knew they would be looking and where they would be looking. He stopped for a moment to look up at the view screen and changed plans. He took the image and ran it through federation records and found who he was looking for. It now made sense a little why he wasn't find anything he was a former federation officer.
quitely he pulled up the records and sent them to Commander Garretts Chair. She would be able to access them and know a little more about who she was dealing with if he could get her to sit down and notice the flashing message. The only question was how with out drawing attention to him self and giving anything away.
" Commander Garrett you have incoming call from sick bay, The need to talk to you about Doctor Nathan van Breughel. They say its importan" he made sure that the when she sat down she would see the message was from him and not sick bay. He banked on her knowing that he wouldn't interrupt her unless it was importan. Give the Doctor's current condition it was a good excuse to use with out drawing any attention.
The message was very basic it gave a picture of captain on the view screen but in a star fleet uniform and his back round. He hoped it would give her enough information to beable to deal with there new threat. At the end of the message he typed a little note
" Sorry Commander thought you could use the info and I need you sit down and look at it. As far as I know there is no change in the doctor condition"

"Nathaniel Franciscus van Breughel, you will get yourself back in bed right now!"
Nathan looked up, confusion crossing his features. What was wrong now? he wondered. He was sitting in a comfortable chair beside his bed, his daughter cradled on his right arm while with the left he held the bottle from which she was happily suckling. On his lap lay grey Tibbe, with black Sox at his feet. Both felines were snoring loudly.
Upon the approach of the older doctor, Sox shot to his feet and ducked under the bed, hissing angrily. Tibbe opened one of her eyes and dug her claws into the fabric of Nathan's pant leg as if expecting to be yanked from her comfortable perch.
Earlier, Jayden had assisted him into the chair, after realising that his fiancé was getting very tired of lying flat on his back, doing nothing. He could see the man was aching for news, but knew he would be given none. To settle him, he had agreed on letting him feed their baby daughter, if he would do so quietly. And he'd brought the felines over to keep him further company.
Though the felines did belong to his son, Nathan had grown quite fond of them, despite his initial objection to them. And, surprisingly, the felines seemed fond of him too, for some odd reason. Jayden had expected that Nathan would respond emotionally to their presence, but oddly enough they seemed to be providing comfort rather than distress.
A little worried, Jayden had departed sickbay to tend to the training of his company on the holodeck. He couldn't postpone that indefinitely, otherwise Johnson would have a strong word with him later, and he wasn't one to neglect his duties, normally. Even though this weren't normal circumstances, and his own life was very much in danger as well. Jayden realised that his mate was starting to come to terms with the boy's absence, almost believing that he would indeed never see the child again; as his attacker had threatened he wouldn't.
Thus, to keep his mind occupied, Jayden had brought him the baby girl, but had insisted he not move from the chair until he got back from the training.
Nathan blinked as his father approached, trying to formulate an answer. Instead, he focused on the infant in his arms, wondering why on earth his father had decided to call his full name. It made him feel like a child once more, for as a child, his father had often called him Nathaniel, especially when he'd done something wrong.
Peter approached and rested a hand on his son's shoulder. "You should be in bed, you're still very sick," he said, concern displaying on his face.
"I'll go back once she's fed," the younger doctor promised, "I just want to sit here for a while, holding her." He looked at the baby in wonder, as the girl glanced up at him in recognition. "She knows me," he murmured, allowing her to wrap a small hand around his finger. He watched as she stuck his finger into her mouth and allowed her to suckle on it. "She's fed and changed, but still she wants more. She's a greedy little thing isn't she?"
Peter nodded in approval. "And she grows well. You're a good father son, never doubt that. She'll grow into an adoring little girl, doting on you as she grows older, have no doubt. All girls do that." He smiled fondly at his son and granddaughter. "Even your sister, Vulcan as she might be. I'll bet she'd say the same thing, and she's got three girls."
"I feel sorry for Jatan already," Nathan smiled thinly, but a little life came back to his eyes as he spoke.
"And how do you feel about yourself?" Peter asked quietly, "I mean medically speaking."
"I'm fine. Chest pain is gone and I can breathe normally again. I'm taking all the rest I need and then some. Jayden won't let me do much, trust me."
"He's good for you," the older doctor said approvingly, "you two look very good together."
Nathan nodded, then stiffled a yawn. "And I'm growing tired," he admitted, holding up the infant to his father. Once he'd taken her, he carefully lifted the cat from his lap, ignoring the hiss of protest. "I'll be fine," he promised as he climbed back onto the bed, "really, I will be."
"I know. Sleep now, I'll bring her by again when you're more awake. I'll tell Jayden you'll be asleep for a while." He watched as his son drifted off into sleep, without assistance from any medications. That, at least was a good sign.

Once both Commander Pride and Lieutenant Tavik had left and were replaced with their backups, Megan turned her attention to the ship drifting nearby. Their shields were on, though far from fully powered, but they were clearly implementing some sort of stealth technology as well as a cloaking device. It was proving very difficult to detect them, and the last thing they needed was to lose track of the ship. “Bridge to Engineering, Commander T’Ress, we need a way to reliably track the vessel off our port bow. Is there any way you know of to place some sort of tracking device on their hull without their knowledge?” Commander Garrett requested, hoping he had something in his bag of tricks to ensure they could locate where the boys were taken.
J'Varr T'Ress mused quietly to himself as he knew that he had been, on several occasions, criticized for talking too much. Making a few gestures with his tail, he looked up to the other and shook his head with a careful purr, trying to keep his words down to a bare minimum that were to be used for useful communication. He did, however, find this to be a very difficult condition and therefore he had to visibly keep his mouth quite closed in-between those few words that he did give. "I...willl..do what I can...murr."
Walking away to a side panel to motion quickly to the computer system, he was glad for the aforementioned device for he could now interface with the main engineering compartment while not having to actually explain any of the tasks that he was going to accomplish. Therefore, he started to move his paws across the aforesaid control device, looking to it quietly as he refused to utilize the voice recognition software that was so much a standard part of LCARS Starfleet operations.
He was making a plan for modifications to a standard Type VII Solar Probe, which could be launched, from the usual quantum torpedo launcher. If aimed correctly, he figured that the hull could act as a photon emitter, in part, considering that anything that had heat or mass could ascribe to the physical component of the blackbody emitter concept, and thus have some degree of a chromatic component. Of course, these were simply issued, written, documents. The only return of anything to Commander Garrett was a simple nod.

When Matt arrived just then, Megan was somewhat surprised to see him on the bridge, but at the same time, she could understand how difficult it would be to stay completely away. The Captain approached the Admiral first, and she quickly moved to join them. “Sir, I don’t know who the man is that we have in the brig or who is on that ship, but although I do think they’re connected to all of this, I doubt this is the same ship and people who took the children. I suggest we talk to the intruder we have and keep a close eye on the ship. Perhaps it will lead us to where they are.”
Turning once more to face the other, T'Ress nodded and tried to keep his self-imposed silence from before. He had come quite far with it, and therefore, was not going to allow himself to erupt into speech now. Instead, he was to remain relatively quiet with his response, "Purrhaps if we remained there as a presence, our psychological effects on him would be all the more damaging."

Perhaps we could get together and compare notes on what we’ve discovered so far?” Raymond asked.
The feline once again gestured with his tail, purring quietly to himself as he tapped his combadge in response to the other, "Of course, I believe that would be....I mean...right. Yes. Merrow, sorry. Anyways, though, I would be willing to discuss my views on the technology that is under the case here. Where might we meet? I do not believe...." He paused, thinking over what he was going to say, "I don't think you said, murr..."

The game was still dragging along as Commander Garrett and the outlaw Captain faced off, talking but saying nothing of any importance, feigning nonchalance but secretly weighing every word and gesture, and most importantly, sizing each other up. More than anything, Megan was stalling for time, wishing she knew whether they were making progress on breaching those shields. When Commander Pride stepped in, she felt perhaps that was a signal that they were making progress or perhaps had already transported the team to the warship. The background data on her opponent was helpful, but she was not happy to see those shields were giving them so much trouble. If the team didn’t get aboard soon, they were in for a fight.
In truth, Megan had just about had enough. It was true that Black Ops did tend to bend the rules, go against procedure and protocol on occasion, but in some cases it certainly made things easier. With the lives of four innocent little boys on the line, Commander Garrett was done playing by the rules. This back and forth game was only prolonging their suffering, and since Pride had given her a way out, she was going to take it. “I’m very sorry, but it appears that your idiotic henchman did more damage to our medical officer than previously thought. Oh don’t worry; I am well aware he probably went against orders trying to earn points. That’s the worst part about switching sides...so hard to find good help. While I check on the doctor, why don’t you try to decide if whatever you’re after is really worth taking on a Sovereign class starship and get back to us. If I’m still unavailable, speak with the Admiral.”
Sending a look toward ops, with Valad fortunately read correctly as a request to cut the channel, Megan rose from her seat. “Keep a close eye on them. If they decide to cause trouble try and keep the damage to a minimum,” Glancing in the Captain and Admiral’s direction, she added, “If they hail us again, just try and stall them.”
Moving to the turbolift, Megan ignored the surprised looks. So what if she was going off script. At least by taking advantage of the team’s presence, she could use the Black Ops perks, hopefully without raising too much suspicion. Once the door closed, she contacted the team. “Garrett to Berelli, there’s been a change in plans. Meet me in your control center,” she ordered, already trying to run through in her mind how they were going to play this without getting them into too much trouble.
Arriving before the rest of the team, Megan quickly got rid of her uniform in favor of the Black Ops suit she had on underneath just in case things took this kind of a turn. As the four agents entered shortly after, they immediately recognized what her change in attire meant. “We’re having no luck breaching their shields, and this has gone on long enough,” Commander Garrett stated calmly. “So we’re going in to get them out, and I will deal with the political and internal ramifications later.”
“Commander Garrett...” Vince began. “Take a moment and think…we can’t just...”
“I’ve already thought this through,” she interrupted. “The ships are evenly matched and playing by the book means a lot of damage and even more casualties, so as long as no one asks too many questions, and I doubt they will, following a positive outcome, getting the children out of there is the best and easiest way to end this.”
~
Now that the team was onboard the warship, each attended to their own tasks. T’Haren and Wilson were off to the computer core and engineering respectively to gain access to their systems and download their database, while Megan, Vince, and Torad headed to where the children were being kept. Technology prevented their presence from being detected, but it was technology they technically shouldn’t have access to and this would be the hardestto explain. Once the group of three arrived at the detention facility, they found dozens of children of all ages much to their surprise and horror. They were separated according to age in different rooms, four in total, but the children from the Jefferson were not present. Fortunately, they were located in a nearby room separated from the other children a few minutes later.
Once their initial recognizance had been completed, the three regrouped, waiting for the green signal from the science officer. “Garrett to T’Haren, report, Lieutenant.”
=/\=I have their sensors on a loop. You are good to go, Commander,=/\= she replied.
“Acknowledged,” Megan replied. “You and Wilson complete your tasks and return to the shuttle to await further instructions,” she added quickly before continuing. “Alright, Berelli head to rooms three and then two. Have the preteens assist you with the younger children. Torad, head to room four first and then have the teens assist you with the infants and toddlers in room one. I’ll free the Jefferson children and then join you in room one. Take out the guards first. There isn’t room on your shuttle for all these children, so we’ll need to use the transporter as a go between. Wilson and T’Haren facilitate the exchange upon your return to the shuttle. Ready?”
Vince and Torad nodded once before the three split up once more. The two guards at the doorway to the small quarters were easily dispatched, and Megan slipped through the wall and entered the dark room. The four kidnapped children were all huddled together, Caleb and Freddy each holding onto a younger twin. Deactivating her cloak, Commander Garrett knelt beside the bed careful not to make any sudden movements. “Freddy, Caleb, do you remember me? I’m here to take you home.”
They looked terrified, her materializing out of thin air probably doing little to help them, but Freddy and Caleb seemed to recognize her. “Megan?” Freddy whispered.
“That’s right,” Megan replied quietly. “I need you to be brave for just a little longer. Keep Kyle and Alex with you and stay close to me,” she requested while carefully helping them up. Once they were on their feet, Commander Garrett gently pulled them closer to her and tapped a few buttons on a device at her waist. “Alright, hang onto me and close your eyes,” she added before walking them through the wall and into the adjacent room which was filled with crying infants, toddlers, and two guards.
Moving to an unoccupied corner, Megan knelt to the ground and removing the small device handed it to Caleb. “Stay close together and hold onto this,” she whispered before moving straight across the room and dealing with the guards as quickly as possible. She hated having to be so violent in front of a room full of children, but there was no other way. Once that was done, she moved back to the corner where the four children were hidden. “Go ahead and place the control on the ground,” she asked, and moments later, the four children and small control became visible again.
“Good job,” she praised quietly, hoping that somehow she wasn’t adding to their trauma. Most of the children in the room were far too young to really understand any of this, let alone be comforted, but fortunately, Torad and the teenagers entered a moment later. “Alright,” Megan addressed the teens, trying to ignore the haunted expression in their eyes. “Each of you grab an infant or gather two or three of the toddlers together. We’re getting you all out of here,” she promised, keeping Caleb and Freddy close to her. “Wilson, T’Haren, are you back in position on the shuttle?”
=/\=Affirmative,=/\= came Lieutenant Wilson’s response. =/\=I’m at the transporter controls and T’Haren is ready to maneuver the shuttle to make the transfer.=/\=
“Good...Berelli, report?” Megan requested, more than ready to get them out of there.
There was a slight pause, enough of one for Megan to nod at Torad to go assist his superior. =/\=I need a few more minutes. There are a lot of kids over here.=/\=
“Torad’s on his way,” Commander Garrett replied. “Wilson, begin the first transport. We should be able to fit into two groups. Start with those containing the youngest lifesigns, then the rest, including myself,” she ordered, watching as about half of the children in the room dematerialized. Glancing down at Freddy, Caleb, and the twins, who had followed her orders and stayed close, she looked around the rest of the room full of terrified teenagers and toddlers. “It’ll be ok,” she promised them. “We’re all next.” It felt like an agonizing eternity, when in reality, it was only about ninety seconds before she felt the second transport initiate and the room went fuzzy.
The transport felt even more like an eternity, as it took nearly ten times the normal cycle, as the shuttle transported them into the pattern buffers, moved from inside the warship’s shields to outside, and then rematerialized them in the Jefferson’s transporter room. After a moment of disorientation, Megan addressed the startled looking transporter operator. “Beam everyone to sickbay, except me,” she ordered before looking back down at Freddy. “You’re Dad will be waiting for you there,” she promised with a smile before stepping off the transporter pad to allow for transport.
“There will be more. Transport them all to sickbay,” she ordered the still stunned Lieutenant before turning to leave. “Captain and Lieutenant Commander Reynolds, report to sickbay,” Megan announced, allowing a small smile to cross her face as she thought of the reunions ahead, before becoming serious once more. “Once all of the children are safely back on the Jefferson, place the shuttle back in the bay and beam back to your command center,” Megan ordered the team over the open commlink before returning to the modified lab herself to retrieve her duty uniform.
Returning to the bridge scarcely an hour after she left, Megan could see a million questions in the eyes of the Admiral, Commander Pride, and Lieutenant Tavik, but she ignored them for now. “Their shield and weapons frequencies should be sent to your stations momentarily. Adjust our own weapons and shields accordingly,” the Commander stated coolly, ignoring the pointed look sent her way by Admiral MC as she stepped into the center of the bridge. “Open a channel to the warship,” she ordered calmly taking a seat in the Captain’s chair. “I’d say it’s about time we end this.”

He didn't say a word when he saw Commander Garrett enter the bridge, when she informed them that she had key information on the other ship. They had already gotten word that the kids were back aboard. Funny thing was he knew she hadn't asked permission for her little trip, he wasn't sure how well this would sit with the admiral.
He didn't have time to voice his concerns this was not the place or time. He started programing the information he needed. It was all a bit strange almost to easy in some aspects if you asked him. They were dealing with a former star fleet officer even he had to beware of possible efforts to secure the kids. Then to get the information they wanted with so much easy. Black ops was good but it still seemed to easy to him while he waited he wondered if she thought the means justify the end.
He waited to see what would happen next a battle was not something he was looking forward too. He wasn't scared to fight by no means but it was one of the reasons his adoptive world was not in such a big hurry to join the federation. They believed in peace at all times if possible. They were not so willing to get involved in conflicts that were not there doing. Still the people on the other ship had taken children and even he knew that was act of war childern were not suppose to be pawns.

Hannah and Donovan watched in horror as a large group of skinny, injured and pale children, of various ages at that, were transported straight into sickbay, without advance warning. The children were cowering together, some on the brink of fainting, others crying softly. To her horror, Hannah even spotted a few that were indeed appearing unconscious or even dead. Quickly, she and the marine medic organised the medical staff, under the supervision of Doctor Peter – as they had started to call him, upon his own request.
Then she spotted something else. Four children were hudled together, somewhat separate from the rest. Looking sideways, she saw Peter was busy tending to the most seriously injured youngsters, and fortunately Nathan was still asleep. Yet, she had no time to tend to them, they didn't appear too injured and the first rule of triage was to see to the most severely injured ones first.
Quietly, she tapped her combadge, while she signaled for Donovan to go ahead and tend to a group of toddlers. “Lance Corporal Mitchell, report to sickbay immediately, it is urgent.”
On the holodeck, Jayden sighed in anoyance. Corporal Christopher Dekker caught his expression, then nodded. “Go,” he told his company commander, “if they say it's urgent you'd better go. What if it's the doctor taking a turn for the worse?” Dekker knew of his boss' affiliation with the chief medical officer, and had even congratulated him on his engagement. As a full Betazoid, Dekker was quite capable of picking Jayden's thoughts apart, even though out of respect and of course due to ethics, very rarely ventured into the other marine's mind. They were roughly the same age, and close friends, thus Chris could easily read him.
Jayden nodded, still not too thrilled at being called away yet again. “Continue training,” he ordered, “we might be needed.” He handed his rifle over then hurried out of the holodeck. When he entered a very busy sickbay, he froze in horror. “Hannah?” he called.
The senior nurse nodded over to a corner. “Captain and Commander Reynolds have been called for,” she informed the marine, “please see to your son.”
The marine turned and was nearly knocked off his feet when Freddy charged towards him. In reflex, Jayden wrapped his arms around the boy, steadying them both. “Easy now,” he soothed, kneeling down to hug the child. “You're safe now. Shhh, don't cry little man, what would your father say?” It seemed silly, but for Jayden it was still too new to refer to himself as father to the boy. Then he realised the child didn't even know what had transpired.
Freddy merely buried his face against Jayden's shoulder, clinging to him in fear. “It was horrible,” he cried.
Jayden held the boy at arm's length and examined him. “Are you in pain?” he asked gently, taking note of the child's apparent bruises and torn clothing. “Are you hurt?” He felt anger building up and he took a few deep breaths to fight back the feeling.
Freddy said nothing, his eyes wide with fright. Yet after a few seconds he simply nodded. He screamed when Jayden picked him up and carried him over to a biobed. Donovan was immediately at his side with a tricorder and scanner. “He's got a long gash on his arm, a few hairline fractures on his ribs and general appearance of being beaten. I'll call the counselor for him later, but for now I think we should wake Nathan and let him know his son is safe.” Jayden nodded, hugging the boy close to him. “I'll give the child a wash first,” he suggested, “I don't want Nate to see him like this.” He looked down at the child. “How about a bath before we go see dad?”
Freddy nodded, still saying nothing, while tears continued to stream down his cheeks, leaving dirty trails on his face. “I'm going to pick you up and carry you home, then we're coming back here to see dad and opa, okay?” The marine cradled the boy to him as he carried him to their home, surprised to find the tub already full with water. Someone, apparently had read his mind in some way. Either way, Freddy was soon bathed and dressed in clean clothes.
Holding on tightly to Jayden's hand, Freddy insisted walking back to sickbay on his own two feet. In his free hand, he held a sandwich. When they returned to sickbay, they first saw Peter, whose eyes filled up with tears as he looked down on the child. “I'm so sorry,” he whispered, then turned away, unable to speak further. The old man still felt guilty for the incident, even though both son and son-in-law had tried to convince him it'd not been his fault at all.
“Is he awake and stable enough for this?” Jayden asked softly. At Peter's nod, Jayden took a deep breath. “Let's go then.” He took the boy's hand again, then led him to main sickbay. “Nathan, are you awake?” They approached the bed, Jayden's body obscuring that of the smaller child.
Nathan turned his head to face his mate. “I'm awake,” he answered, almost cheerfully. He was not unaware of the amount of activity in sickbay, could even see what was going on to some extend, but was not informed of anything. “What's going on?” he asked.
“We got a bit more than we bargained for,” Jayden answered, smiling sadly. “But...” He stepped aside and gave Freddy a nudge forward. “Go on, say hi to your dad.” He cast a worried glance at the monitor at the foot of the bed, hearing the beeping increase in frequency almost immediately.
Nathan felt his breath catch in his throat as he stared at his son. He tried to talk but his voice wouldn't co-operate. With Jayden's assistance, he sat up straighter, then patted the free space beside him on the bed. Freddy immediately climbed up and hugged his father tightly. “You're hurt,” the boy whispered urgently, “dad, what happened?”
~Typical~ Jayden thought as he observed the two ~the boy has just been rescued and only cares for his father's wellbeing. And Nathan only cares for his son's~ He felt a pang of envy, not being entirely included in the little reunion. Then, Nathan held out his hand to him and drew him close. They sat together for a while, saying nothing, just holding eachother.
“Who-” Nathan started, when he finally found his voice again, and had calmed sufficiently to be able to speak.
“I don't know,” Jayden answered, “but I was this close to heading out there with my team and rescue him myself. I'm glad I didn't have to risk my men.” He ruffled the boy's hair. “He's a little worse for wear, and will probably sleep a lot for a while, but he's all right. Donovan said he'll call a counselor for the children soon. Right now, I just want him to sit with you.” He caressed Nathan's cheek. “You've more colour on your cheeks already,” he complimented with a smile. “How do you feel?”
“Suprisingly well,” the doctor answered, cradling Freddy in his arms. The child had cried himself to sleep now and was hanging limply against his father's chest. “I've a hunch as to who did the rescue, but of course we can't know for certain.” With his free hand, he wiped the tears from his eyes. “Have you told him yet?”
Jayden shook his head. “No, but I think you should do so, tomorrow. I don't think they'll keep you here in sickbay much longer, you really are looking better.” He waved Peter over after a few minutes of silence. “How are the other children?”
Peter sighed. “Matt and Jason are over there, tending to their boys. The twins will probably not remember much soon enough but I'm a little worried about Caleb.” He ran his hand over Freddy's hair. “I'm very relieved they've been returned safe and sound, but I'm concerned about the psychological trauma. From what I can understand, they weren't treated very well. The children, including yours and the Reynolds' are malnourished, severely bruised and dehydrated. As soon as your son awakes, make him drink, preferably chicken soup.”
Nathan nodded, closing his eyes. “I will,” he promised. He felt Jayden squeeze his hand before he drifted off into sleep again, this time dreaming a happy dream, rather than the nightmares that had tormented him before.
“And now he'll recover faster,” Peter promised, resting his hand on the marine's shoulder. “You should go back to the holodeck, I'll look after them.”
The young marine shook his head. “No I'll sit here for a while, just in case.”
“As you wish. Can I call upon you if I need help with the other children?”
“Of course. I'll go talk to Captain Reynolds for a minute.” He rose to his feet and walked up to Matt and Jason. “I'm relieved to see your boys are safe,” he said softly, “Freddy's all right, he's sleeping now.” He looked up at both men. “How are you holding up sir?” he then asked.

Matt knew perfectly well what Megan had just done and for that he would always be grateful. The realization that he would be reunited with his son almost brought tears to the young captain's eyes.
"Matt what are you waiting for, Caleb is waiting for you," Admiral MC said looking quite puzzled but also relieved that all the children were now back safe on board the Jefferson.
"Thanks," Matt said before he dashed out of the bridge and headed towards sickbay. The last few days had been the worse, not knowing if his son was still alive made had emotionally wrecked him.
Even before he entered sickbay, he could hear the countless voices of young children and those responsible for them trying to reassure them that they were now safe. As soon as he walked through everyone quieted down and Matt's eyes darted everywhere trying to find his son.
"Captain, I'm sorry but Caleb sustained some injuries and is bleeding internally," a nurse said quietly," he'll be alright, but it seemed that he took quite a beating. It seems all the older kids were roughed up."
"Uncle Matt! Where is father?" Alex asked already in tears as he waited to be picked up," Caleb and Freddy saved us. I want Caleb to be okay!"
"He will, don't you worry about him," Matt said as he carried Kyle to a bio bed," now I need you to do everything the nurses and doctors ask of you. Your dad will be here any minute."
"Ok," Alex said as his brother nudged Matt to place him on the biobed as well.
"Captain, could you please let our families know that we are alright?" Tib asked glad that his new found friends were back with there families.
"Yes of course, once this ordeal is over, I will be contacting all of your parents myself," Matt said amazed how calm and collected the children were.
"Captain, Caleb is out of surgery," Hannah said as she went to attend some of the other injuries," if we all quiet down, I promise to give you all some candy!"
Matt tentatively walked towards the operation table where his son was now resting quietly. Even though he knew that his son was going to be alright, Matt couldn't stop the tears from flowing. As he silently sobbed at his son's side he promised himself that this would never happen again. The people behind this were also responsible for the creation of Nathan's daughter and the kidnapping of all the other children. Matt would it make it so that this group was hunted down and eradicated.
"I'm sorry for allowing this to happen to you," Matt said as he whispered into his son's ear," I'll be back once you have awaken. I need to get back to work."
“How are you holding up sir?” he then asked.
"He'll be fine, Hannah said its a lot worse than it looks," Matt said pleased to hear that Freddy would also be alright," How is Nathan? I know he's been through a lot and furthermore how you right now?"

He wasn't sure what the future might hold then again he didn't have the power to see into it. He was focused on the ship in front of them right now but his feelings and his gut were telling him that him and Commander Garrett were going to be at odds with each other. She took a risk and it payed off, she got lucky on so many levels. He knew from there brief exchange before all this that she felt it was worth risk.
It seemed that any trust the two of them were going to build on just went out the window. He still thought the whole this was to easy, they were dealing with a former star fleet captain. He couldn't figure out how a former star fleet captain would not have even seen a possible chance of this happening. It was all too easy in his mind if you looked at the whole picture all this trouble to take the kids and hide them. Then to show up and threaten them Jefferson and loose the ace you were holding like that.
He would be staying clear of Commander Garrett for a while and keeping a close eye on her at the same time. This was not what he had wanted when he came aboard, he was a little lost on what to think about the whole thing. When the mission was over he would call home and do some more digging and sew what else he could learn about the Commander. For the moment he would do his job and obey her orders, although he knew somewhere down the line that was going to become a problem.
Some day soon Commander Garrett was going to have to pick a side, he was just concerned on which side that was going to be.

"He'll be fine, Hannah said its a lot worse than it looks," Matt said pleased to hear that Freddy would also be alright," How is Nathan? I know he's been through a lot and furthermore how you right now?"
"Freddy said Caleb was very brave, trying to protect them all," Jayden told his captain, carefully resting a hand on the other man's shoulder," I'm sure you're very proud of your son. I know Freddy is proud to be his friend and I'm very grateful to him, for keeping our son safe." The marine was very slowly getting his mind around the fact that Freddy was now his son as well, though saying it still sounded extremely odd.
Tentatively, Jayden glanced over his shoulder, to where Nathan was still hugging his son. "I'm glad and relieved to report that Nathan's recovering nicely," he continued, while a small but happy smile lit up his face, "especially now that the boy is back. Nathan was about to believe that he'd never see his son again."
He turned back to face Matt, his smile widening a little. "I'm fine sir," he continued, "a little tired and worn out, but I'm all right. Is it over now though? Are our children safe, is our daughter safe now?" He dearly hoped so, and really wanted to believe it.
He sighed softly. "Captain I've a favour to ask of you..." he then started, hesitating ever so briefly. "I'm not sure whether Nathan remembers, and I'll check with him in a few seconds, but a few hours ago he asked me if I'd marry him..."
This time, his hesitation was a little longer. "I'm sure he'd appreciate it if you were to formalise the arrangement for us? I mean..." He faltered, gathering his courage. "Would you marry us?"
He tugged at Matt's sleeve, then started to walk back to Nathan, relieved to see the boy had fallen asleep in his father's lap. Quietly, Peter took the boy in his arms and carried him over to a vacant bed, leaving his parents some privacy. "Nathan?" Jayden started carefully, sounding uncertain, "were you serious about your question to me earlier?"
Surprised, Nathan looked up. "Which question was that?" he asked in earnest, searching his partner's face for clues as to what he was getting at.
"About getting married?"
The doctor smiled, nodding carefully. "Indeed I was."
Jayden beamed at him in delight. "Good, because I just put the request to the captain.."
Now, Nathan cast hopeful eyes on the captain, then reached for his own combadge. "Admiral MC7of9, would you please come down to sickbay?" he asked, before tapping it again. "Major Johnson, please report to sickbay." He gazed at Jayden. "I think Cyle should be your best man, as he's your boss...I don't think he'd have any hard feelings if I were to ask MC, as he's a very dear friend of mine."
Jayden nodded, fully aware of his mate's feelings for the admiral, feelings that, despite their break-up, still lingered. He didn't envy their continued friendship, even appoved of and encouraged it. "I'll ask him," he promised, before he too cast hopeful eyes on Matt. "Captain?" he prompted.

OOC: I hope you all don't mind but I thought I'd put in a little post to give some background to my character before I join the ship.
In his visitor's quarters on Starbase 47, Teyno stood with one hand against the wall, staring out the small window at the stars, lost in thought. From behind him, the desk console beeped and then the computer said, "Connection established."
Teyno moved over to the desk and read the console screen:
Incoming Transmission Admiral David Shirakov Starbase 78 Starfleet United Federation of Planets
He pressed the accept button and the words were replaced with the image of a balding, portly man in his late 50s sitting behind a desk.
"Admiral, how are you?" Teyno said jovially.
The Admiral did not seem to return Teyno's light-hearted manner.
"Busy," he said with a frown.
"I completed the training just like you wanted," said Teyno, assuming a more business-like manner, "I kept up my end of the bargain, now what have you got for me?"
"As of today you've been granted the commission of Lieutenant Junior Grade. You'll be chief tactical officer on the U.S.S. Jefferson."
"Junior grade?" cried Teyno derisively, "I've probably got more experience than their whole bridge crew put together. I should be at least a Lieutenant, if not a Lieutenant Commander! Have you forgotten that you owe me one, Dave?"
"It took a great deal of string-pulling to get you this commission. There's only so far I'm willing to go," said the Admiral, now bristling at Teyno's tone, "I've repaid my debt to you. Now that you're in Starfleet you have to follow the rules and work your way up the ladder the hard way."
Teyno sighed and shook his head disbelievingly, then, with resignation said, "Fine, Dave, I'll do it your way."
"Good. I put my [word deleted] on the line for you. Don't screw this up. Oh, and one more thing...as of today, it's 'Admiral Shirakov' to you, lieutenant. Starfleet out."
The Admiral pressed a button and his image was replaced by the Starfleet insignia and the 'End Transmission' screen. Teyno then brought up the starbase's arrivals schedule. The Jefferson was due to arrive in a few days.
He sat back in his chair and began to research the ship's history and crew. This was going to be interesting.

"Nathan, Jayden I don't think it would be wise to marry at the moment," Matt said knowing what was happening on the bridge as they spoke," we have just made contact with the ship that had our children, but do not worry. I'll marry you after we are done with those [word deleted]." (Nathan) "Look both of you need rest, let me take care of this," Matt said as he looked at his two friends. He could clearly remember when he despised Nathan and was indifferent towards Jayden. How fast things change, Matt thought as he made his way out of sickbay. "Hannah contact me when Caleb wakes up," Matt said as he turned the corner. It only took a few moments for Matt to make his way back to the bridge and saw a familiar face on the screen. "You [word deleted]! How dare you do this to my son Brevan?" Matt asked immediately outraged that a man that he had trusted for many years had done this to him," why would you disgrace the uniform that you served for so many years." "I no longer serve the Federation Matt, my only loyalty is with my family," Brevan said visibly shaken to see someone from his past. Matt turned to face the Admiral and Megan, his face told them all they needed to know. Even though he hadn't spoken to Brevan since he had left his mother's ship over ten years ago, Matt had been bretrayed. "You know that I won't let you escape," Matt said trying hard to control his emotions. If it was up to him, he would have destroyed the ship the moment he arrived on the bridge. "Admiral, may I assume command of the Jefferson?" Matt asked of his friend. "She is yours Captain," MC said as he took the tactical station. "Commander I assume that we have clean shot?" Matt asked of Megan who was surprised by the question. (Megan) "Go to red alert! Raise shields and stand by all weapons," Matt ordered as he took the center seat once again," Brevan you will never do this again." "My dear Matt, we will meet again," Brevan said moments before MC reported that a fleet of vessels were entering the system," say hello to my friends Matt. I will see you soon." "Stop him. Don't let him leave this sector!" Matt ordered but knew that it was already to late," get us out of here Commander. Set course to the nearest Federation Starbase." (Tag All) OOC: It seems this mission is dragging on and I know it was a quick fix, but we can always come back to the Brevan character, so don't worry about him Valad Now I think we all have a wedding to attend to

At Matt’s arrival on the bridge, it seemed that the Captain not only recognized their opponent but had a history. Commander Garrett was somewhat concerned with his emotional state but still relinquished his chair as he took over the ‘negotiation.’ Not liking where this was going, the First Officer relieved the officer stationed at tactical prepared for a confrontation. Ensign Orlov was, as usual, nowhere to be seen, adding another mark to the already lengthy list. "Commander, I assume that we have clean shot?" the Captain asked, much to Megan’s surprise...and concern.
Trying to formulate a proper response, Commander Garrett finally answered, “We do have a clean shot, Sir, but we have the upper hand here. There’s no need to...”
"Go to red alert! Raise shields and stand by all weapons," he ordered taking his chair once more glowering at the viewscreen. "Brevan, you will never do this again."
Exchanging a concerned glance with the Admiral as Matt and Brevan exchanged words, Megan was debating whether or not to intervene when the sensors picked up a whole fleet of vessels entering the system. Even with their infiltration into the lead warship’s computer systems, the arrival of backup didn’t provide enough time to make use of the advantage. To save the Jefferson, they needed to leave, now.
"Stop him. Don't let him leave this sector!" Captain Reynolds ordered, but the edge in his voice indicated he already knew the opportunity had passed. With a slump of his shoulders, he relented. "Get us out of here, Commander. Set course to the nearest Federation Starbase," Matt finally acknowledged reluctantly, his voice filled with a multitude of repressed emotions ranging from sorrow and regret to absolute rage.
Glancing at MC once more, Megan powered down the weapons and stepped aside to allow the duty tactical officer to resume his post. Although she knew the Captain was most likely thrilled and relieved to have his son and nephews back, with the man responsible going free like this it had to be bittersweet. She knew all too well how consuming anger and revenge could be and hoped that the joy of having his family back would help him heal. However, it wasn’t right that this former officer was still free to kidnap, kill, and otherwise destroy families, so Captain Brevan’s name would soon be added to her own list of people she would like to see come to justice.
~
In her office browsing through several reports regarding Ensign Orlov, Commander Garrett calmly sipped her tea and debated what to do. The departmental reports from those beneath the Acting Chief Tactical/Security Officer were hardly glowing but rather vague as well. It seemed as though they didn’t quite want to call him out but certainly weren’t going to pretend everything was well within the department. It was somewhat disheartening that no one was willing to take a stand. Clearly, it wasn’t just a matter of getting used to the position or rookie mistakes; people had been hurt and lives put in jeopardy, and yet not one officer had come to her as the Executive Officer with any concern. Major Johnson had compiled and turned in his own evaluation as well, and it was the furthest thing from glowing, even unflattering.
While she was loathed to make a move without any support or acknowledgement from within the department, clearly something had to be done. Megan would have normally gone to Matt with this, at least for his opinion, but the Captain was still recovering from nearly losing his son and nephews and still rather unsettled due to the confrontation with Brevan, so she had decided to handle this herself. As First Officer, she had the authority to do so, and it did fall firmly into her job description.
After giving it a great deal of thought, Commander Garrett decided to deal with the matter once they returned to base and was about to begin drafting her own report when her door chime sounded. “Come in,” Megan acknowledge, surprised to see her sister walk into her office. “Marina, I wasn’t expecting you. In fact, I don’t think you’ve ever been in my office before. Go ahead and sit down...is everything alright?”
Nervously fidgeting with her fingers, Marina moved for the chair. It felt so weird to be here...coming to her boss’ boss’ office, who just happened to be her sister, but after giving it a great deal of thought, she had arrived at the decision that there was no other way. “Thanks,” she replied, taking a seat. “And no, everything is not alright.”
Raising her eyebrow at that, but assuming it was probably some boy, Megan took a step toward the replicator. “Well you can always come to me. You want anything?”
“No, thank you,” Ensign Garrett relied, fidgeting some more waiting for her sister to sit down before taking a deep breath and giving it a shot. “It’s about Ensign Orlov.”
Stunned to say the very least, Megan stared wide-eyed for a moment. The last thing she had expected from her little sister was an actual, serious conversation, let alone about the very problem she’d been dealing with herself, but she quickly composed herself and slipped easily back into professional mode. “What about Ensign Orlov?”
Immediately detecting the shift in demeanor, Marina was even more unnerved, as she wasn’t used to dealing with Megan like this, but she nonetheless pressed on. “I know I haven’t been here for very long, but I have some concerns regarding his, well, suitability for his current role,” she began, gradually changing her posture and tone of voice to be more professional as well. “There have been too many breaches in security to be a coincidence, and some of his decisions, particularly the one to cancel Doctor van Breughel’s guard, have been questionable at best,” she replied, gaining momentum and confidence as she went. “The truth is, I question whether or not he is qualified for the position, let alone capable of handling the responsibility.”
A few moments of silence stretched out as Commander Garrett contemplated the irony that her sister was the only one who had taken action and come to her. Finally, she asked, “Have you spoken with other security or tactical officers to see if they feel the same way or raised your concerns with your secondary superior as well?
“I have not spoken with the Chief Brig Officer, but I have casually brought this up with several other security officers. Their responses have been...hesitant and vague. Either they don’t trust me enough yet as a newer addition to the crew or they have similar concerns but are worried about rocking the boat or getting their friend into any trouble. My instinct tells me it’s probably more the later, as he was promoted from within their ranks and used to work with most of them regularly,” she added.
Letting everything sink in for a moment, Megan finally responded. “Thank you for coming to me with this. You did the right thing.” Hesitating for a brief moment, she continued. “The truth is, I have had my own concerns as well and reached some of the same conclusions you have regarding the rest of the department’s silence on the issue. Your coming here with this information actually helped me a great deal.”
Allowing a small sigh of relief to escape her lips, Marina relaxed, slumping back in the chair slightly. “I’ve been debating what to do for a day or so. Not to mention that coming to you like this is a little...well weird. But it’s good to know that I did do the right thing in the end. Now I just have to hope I don’t turn into a social reject for it.”
Smiling slightly in spite of the seriousness of the situation, Megan shook her head. “Well if you do, that’s their problem, not yours. You did the right thing, and if they can’t see that, so what? Sometimes the right thing isn’t exactly the popular thing.”
Megan may have been right, but Marina slumped all the way back in the chair and sighed heavily. “I know...you’re right...but I want to be popular...is that so wrong?”
Trying not to laugh, Megan replied, “There’s nothing wrong with being popular or wanting to be popular. The problem is when you want it so badly you don’t do the right thing when you know better, and you didn’t do that. I wouldn’t worry too much about it...there are plenty of people out there who care more about doing the right thing than doing the popular thing anyway. And it’s not like what you said is going to be broadcast to everyone. You’ll be just fine,” Commander Garrett reassured her.
“I’d better be, because a week or two without a date, and I’m gone,” Marina replied sarcastically, grinning over at Megan as stood up and started heading for the door.
“I believe you,” Megan shot back with a grin of her own. “Though there’s not much chance of that happening I don’t think. Even just one week would be like a record.”
After Marina had waltzed out of the office, Megan shook her head and took another sip of tea. She hadn’t expected that from her sister at all. In spite of how she came across, Marina was good at her job, extremely talented at reading people, and a very hard worker. When it came right down to it, she would do the right thing, and Megan was proud of her. Not only that, but her comments helped the Commander a great deal. It was settled then…tomorrow she would have a talk with Ensign Orlov.

It was good to see there captain back on the bridge, from his reaction there was some kind of history with the other captain on the view screen. When he heard the order for combat he didn't question it he prepared himself and the ship. When he saw that the odds were about to change with the arrival of other ships. He wasn't to concerned he knew his captain would make the right choice.
He heard the order and programed a course to get them out of harms way. He decided to make sure the other captain knew this was not over by a long shot. Programing the course he got as close to the other ship as he could with out harming either ship. He knew where the shields were and just passed with in a few inches of enough to make them light up. He was sure they would think they were crazy for coming so close but he wanted his captain to at least get the last word in.
It seemed things were settle down now as they left the sector heading to federation base. He got up and left the bridge he wasn't sure what to do but stopped by Commander Garretts office in time to see a female officer leave. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do but thought he needed to say something. He entered her office and could see the commander writing a report. She looked up and him and acknowledge his presence and didn't looked shocked to see him there.
" Permission to speak freely Commander"
After getting permission he spoke his mind but made sure he didn't cross the line.
" Since I have come aboard you and I have been at odds with each other. Today you got lucky Commander with the risk you took. While the out come was good the chances of failing were just as high. If your mission had failed the situtation would have become more complicated not to mention the tatical edge the other captain would have gained. He would have you and your team and what ever secert tech gear you had.''
" One day sometime down the line Commander your going to have to choose Commander. While you say you are the first officer you are still acting like a secert agent. While this may have helped us this time around it will not always work. Your going to come up against a problem where your two lines of thinking are going to cost us. I'm not saying the out come of this mission was not good it was the best possible out come. The point is you got lucky and sometimes luck is not enough."
" hind sight is 20/20 and means very little right now, but it does seem a little strange how you pulled this off so easy. I'm not saying your trainning didn't play a large part but people don't rise to the rank of captain with out the ability of guessing what might happen. A question will always remain did the other captain have any idea this might happen. If he did then why did he let you get away with it. I mean coming back with the children was great but shield and weapon freq's. Ask your self could somebody get a board the Jefferson do what you did and get away with it. Even more so when you know your holding something the other side wants. Some how commander I think this will be coming back to haunt us down the line" <Tag Garrett>

Nathan and Jayden exchanged a surprised look as Matt walked away. "We didn't mean right this minute!" Jayden called after the retreating captain. "I wonder if he heard," he continued in a murmur. He sat on the edge of the bed, his arms circled around Nathan's shoulders, resting this head on top of the other man's.
In Nathan's arms, Freddy still lay curled up and peacefully asleep, until a nurse came to retrieve him and make him comfortable on the next bed. "You'll be able to take him home in an hour or so," she promised both men.
"Home?" Nathan queried, expression hopeful. While a doctor, he didn't really like spending any time in sickbay as patient, and in his opinion he'd been cooped up here long enough. By now, he knew the extend of the emergency concerning the rescued children and grudgingly had to acknowledge that he wasn't in any physical shape to help. He had to concede to his father that the EMH was currently better suited to deal with the stress of the situation.
"Home," Jayden replied, taking his hands. "Can you sit up?" Of course he could, since he could walk as well. "Get dressed, I'll go get Angelique."
Dressed... Nathan looked down at himself and realised he wasn't exactly dressed. Someone had relieved him of his tunic at some point, and failed to replace it with a clean one. The same could be said for his pants, which were missing as well. His cheeks coloured in embarassment, even as he realised that it had probably been for a good cause. In his state of undress, he'd be less tempted to go walk-about.
Jayden pulled the curtain around the bed as he left, leaving his mate to dress in private. Several minutes later, he returned with the baby in his arms, cradling her lovingly. The two felines trailed on behind him, one hopping up on the boy's bed, nuzzling his face while mewing softly. "Are you dressed?" he called ahead, before stepping through. It didn't really matter to him, it wouldn't be the first time he'd seen Nathan that way. Either way, it seemed right to warn ahead.
"I am," came the muffled answer, "now, anyway." Jayden stepped through and whistled appreciatingly. "You've lost weight," he said accusingly, "we'll go for a swim later, all of us. As a family."
Nathan smiled happily, taking fiancé and daughter in his arms. "We will," he promised, tearing the curtains aside after he released them. "Give me Angelique, I don't think I'll be able to carry Freddy."
The marine nodded and handed the infant over. Then he gently scooped the sleeping boy into his arms. "Tell Peter we've gone home," he told the duty nurse, "he's welcome to stop by after his shift, we've a lot to discuss."
Nathan shook his head. "I wonder if the admiral received my message, I've yet to get a response," he mumbled.
"Don't fret, he'll be your best man. You two go back a long way, he wouldn't bow out now, would he? Besides, I'll bet your sister will show up as soon as she even hears the word wedding."
The doctor chuckled. "No doubt," he answered darkly, "I'll send her a message later." The two men walked out of sickbay, each carrying a child in his arms. Nathan was relieved to be out of sickbay, his family united and out of danger. He made a mental note to go and thank Megan later, in private.

As Megan resumed her report, including Marina’s visit and comments as well, the chime sounded again. Knowing that if her sister had forgotten something, she would have just barged back in, Commander Garrett called for whoever it was to come in, and upon seeing Commander Pride enter, she knew exactly what was coming… "Permission to speak freely, Commander," Desert requested politely, and keeping her expression carefully neutral, she nodded once and allowed him to just speak.
"Since I have come aboard, you and I have been at odds with each other. Today you got lucky, Commander, with the risk you took. While the outcome was good, the chances of failing were just as high. If your mission had failed, the situation would have become more complicated, not to mention the tactical edge the other Captain would have gained. He would have you and your team and whatever secret tech gear you had. One day sometime down the line, Commander, you’re going to have to choose, Commander. While you say you are the First Officer, you are still acting like a secret agent. While this may have helped us this time around, it will not always work. You’re going to come up against a problem where your two lines of thinking are going to cost us. I'm not saying the outcome of this mission was not good; it was the best possible result. The point is you got lucky but sometimes luck is not enough."
"Hind sight is 20/20 and means very little right now, but it does seem a little strange how you pulled this off so easy. I'm not saying your training didn't play a large part, but people don't rise to the rank of Captain without the ability of guessing what might happen. A question will always remain: did the other captain have any idea this might happen. If he did then why did he let you get away with it? I mean coming back with the children was great, but the shield and weapon frequencies? Ask yourself, could somebody get a board the Jefferson do what you did and get away with it? Even more so when you know you’re holding something the other side wants. Somehow Commander, I think this will be coming back to haunt us down the line,” he finished.
Feeling an uncharacteristic flash of frustration, Megan pushed it aside and tried to address his concerns calmly and directly as she usually did, but deep down, she was beginning to wonder if she was in over her head with this double assignment. “What may have appeared to you as luck was quite simply standard procedure as an agent, Commander. I know to you the risk seemed ridiculous and the outcome almost unbelievable, but from my standpoint, this went as planned. The difference being, this was a standard level mission, albeit one with high risks, but we utilized the extraordinary measures of including the team. Teams like that are there to deal with the extraordinary, the high-tech, and the almost impossible, and while these criminals were good and certainly dangerous, they weren’t at a level and this was not a situation where a team normally would intervene. I requested them knowing that in the big picture, they were overkill, but that’s what I wanted, to ensure Doctor van Breughel, Captain Reynolds, and his brother would get their kids back safely.”
Hesitating and taking a deep breath to calm herself, Commander Garrett continued. “Look, I can see plainly that you don’t trust me because of my past. It may seem to you that I’m acting more like an agent than a First Officer, but frankly the training and skills that I learned as an agent are a part of who I am now. Each person who takes on the responsibility of being a Captain or First Officer brings who they are and what they know and can do with them, and for me, that’s as a former agent.”
Taking another deep breath, Megan continued to try and steady her nervous. “I’m not going to be able to change that, Commander. That’s who I am, and frankly, it’s an asset to me and to this crew, as was demonstrated in the outcome. It may have seemed like a massive risk to you, and simply as a Starfleet officer, it would have been huge, but as a former agent, it was business as usual. I know you seem to think there’s some kind of war here with Starfleet on one side and agents and the organizations they work for on the other, but really, most of them are on the same side. This isn’t Section 31, Commander. Then it would be different, but I’m talking about legitimate, official parts of Starfleet who get called in to deal with the unusual and impossible missions. So yes, when you take a team like that and put them into a more standard mission, it’s going to look miraculous. You seem to think that being a former agent and a current First Officer is a conflict of interests, but I don’t see it that way. The main differences are the missions, the tools at my disposal, and the vehicle under which I’m operating. As an agent, your goal is to complete your mission and to keep the parties involved, whether civilians, officers, or fellow agents safe. My goal is still mostly the same, to complete the missions assigned, but the parties involved have changed to this ship and this crew. I will use everything I am and have to keep this ship and crew safe and to complete the missions that we are assigned, including what I learned as an agent, and I see nothing wrong with that.”
“We spoke before when I told you of my past, and I suggested that if you couldn’t trust me to have this ship’s best interests at heart that you should request for a transfer, and I will reiterate that now, as clearly you don’t trust me. My conscience is clear, Commander. I have my priorities straight, even if my methods, skills, and connections are a little unconventional for someone in my position. There isn’t going to be any torn convictions or loyalties here, but if you don’t believe that, then you are perfectly free to leave. The choice is yours. Now if you’ll excuse me, I do have duties to attend to, Commander,” she finished, turning her attention back to the padd.

He just looked at her in disbelief she could rationalize the whole thing she didn't see the tight rope she was walking on. He had a little more respect for her then he did before but still there were issues. He lowered his voice to one of feeling with no malice in it he wanted her to see that things are not always what the appear.
" Commander Garrett I have no desire to leave this ship unless you find me unfit for duty. I will obey your orders because thats what I'm sworn to do. I would suggest that maybe you take some time and read through my personal record. I too was a xo for a short time and was faced with a very tough choice. Between one's captain and the safety of the ship it was not easy and Captain Drago never forgave me for it."
" I know in my heart you will put the ship first but all my trying to tell you is. That one day that choice is going to be alot tougher then you think. Yes your skills as an agent can come in handy at the same time they put you in a very tough spot. One day you may have to choose between the two at that time it might not be and clear and as easy as you may think. I will bug you no more Commander. All I ask it that you try and learn from my mistakes and realize that I'm only looking out for you good day commander" <Tag Garrett>

"Commander Garrett, I have no desire to leave this ship unless you find me unfit for duty. I will obey your orders because that’s what I'm sworn to do. All I ask it that you try and learn from my mistakes, and realize that I'm only looking out for you. Good day, Commander,” the navigator finished politely, before waiting to be dismissed.
Taken aback at the sudden change in both his voice and posture, as well as what he was saying, she didn’t know quite what to say so simply nodded. “Thank you, Commander; dismissed,” and as Pride nodded and left, Commander Garrett leaned back in her chair and tried to sort through everything she’d just heard, very puzzled.
She understood now more where he was coming from, but at the same time, she felt that perhaps his past experiences had skewed his perspective. Sure, being a First Officer wasn’t easy. Being a Starfleet officer wasn’t easy, and there were always going to be tough decisions and challenges, but that was just part of the job. And yes, being a former agent, and actually a current agent, on top of everything else did add plenty of extra trouble, a lot of it right now in dealing with him actually, and it wasn’t so much a matter of believing she could handle it as knowing she was where she was supposed to be, doing what she was meant to do, and taking it one day at a time. Megan felt that was all she could do besides preparing and working hard.
And speaking of difficult decisions and situations, Commander Garrett needed to prepare for a tough meeting and an ever tougher conversation with Ensign Orlov.
~
It had been several days since the Jefferson had warped out of the system leaving behind the fleet of ships responsible for the kidnappings, and now as repair crews swarmed over the hull and the crew began to take shoreleave on the starbase, the time had come to deal with the tactical and security department, particularly with its acting chief. Captain Reynolds was taking some much needed family time with his son, brother, and nephews, and since personnel issues were the Executive Officer’s concern, Megan had decided to get the situation dealt with before Matt returned, especially considering how personal this problem had become for him. She hated to think how difficult it would have been for the Captain to deal with someone who had played even a small role in the abduction of Freddy and his son and nephews.
The chime sounded and was acknowledged to allow the doors to part and admit the very nervous looking Ensign on the other side. Treading very carefully into the office, Lucas Orlov came to an uneasy halt on the other side of her desk, clearly at attention. “You asked to see me, Ma’am?” he addressed her, but his voice was a bit shaky and the fear in his eyes was unmistakable, giving him a puppy-like look.
“I did,” Megan acknowledged coolly, observing him for a moment. He was beginning to look less and less like the cocky, incompetent man his actions made him out to be and more like an innocent kid who got in over his head. “Since it’s been only a short time since you became the acting chief, I wanted to speak with you regarding your performance.” He looked about ready to faint at this, so Commander Garrett indicated for him to sit, which he did, before asking, “How do you think it’s going?”
This seemed to be the last thing he’d expected, and the deer-in-the-headlights look only grew more pronounced as he struggled to come up with a response, finally offering, “Not particularly well, Ma’am…” his voice dejected, looking quite miserable.
This was the last piece of information the First Officer needed. He wasn’t arrogant or oblivious to the problem. The question was, did he know why. “And why do you think that is?” she asked, trying to relax her posture somewhat to calm him down.
“Well, Ma’am...I...” the Ensign started, looking at his fingers before finally, shoulders slumping, he caved in. “I’m not cut out for this job...I know my predecessor placed a great deal of faith in me, but he was wrong. I’m not command-grade material. I’m just a security officer, and I was happy just being a security officer. I’m way out of my element here and past my ability. I...I would like to request a transfer, Ma’am,” he finished, continuing to look so dejected with his eyes fixed firmly on the carpet.
Her suspicion confirmed, Megan actually felt a bit sorry for the guy. He had never asked to be put in this position, but he hadn’t wanted to turn down the opportunity. “Ensign, if I may, perhaps it’s not so much that you’re not cut out for it, but rather that it happened too soon, and you weren’t ready for it. While there are problems in the department, they were magnified by the skill of this group. I think what you should take away from this is to progress slowly and never take on more than you can handle, and if you find yourself in a position where you have too much ask for help. If you try to do everything yourself when you can’t handle it, things will only get worse. However, if you’re happy as a security officer, that is what you should do. I can put through a transfer for you if you like, but I would ask you to consider remaining on the Jefferson as a security officer,” Commander Garrett offered softly.
For the first time since entering her office, Ensign Orlov actually looked directly at her. “Thank you, Ma’am. That’s very kind of you, but I think if I have any chance of regaining my reputation and salvaging my career, I need to start over on a new ship with new people. Transferring is the only way I can really do that,” he replied.
Nodding, Commander Garrett replied, “I understand. I will put that through for you right now. You can move to the station to wait for reassignment if you want,” she added.
“Thank you. I think I’ll do that,” he responded, beginning to look a little better. “And thank you for being so understanding, Ma’am. I thought you were going to kill me,” he added without meaning to before his face paled as he realized he said it aloud.
Just as shocked as he was, Megan stared at him for a moment before moving to cover. “I...I guess my reputation needs some adjustment,” she replied, hoping that would lighten the mood a bit, and feeling quite relieved when the Ensign did relax and even smiled a little at her slight joke. “You can move whenever you’re ready.”
“Thank you, Ma’am. I’ll do that,” he answered, quickly jumping to his feet and backing towards the door. “”Thank you again. I really appreciate your understanding,” he added quickly before darting through the door, seeming to have lost his nerve once more due to his little slip of the tongue and leaving Megan behind, a bit confused.
~
Amazingly enough, Megan had barely put through Ensign Orlov’s transfer order when she received a transmission that the position had been filled. Even though it probably meant nothing, and she’d just managed to send it at the right moment, it seemed a little suspicious to her that it had happened so quickly, like someone had known there was about to be a change and had been waiting with a replacement. Still, no matter how quickly it had happened, the Jefferson now had a new Chief Tactical/Security Officer, who was onboard the station ready to be welcomed. In fact, mere hours after her conversation with the former chief, Commander Garrett was walking down the corridor heading for the junction room to greet the new one.
It appeared she was early, since she ended up waiting for several minutes, which felt strange to her as since becoming First Officer she rarely had to wait anymore, but around seven minutes later, the officer she recognized from her quick glance at his personnel file appeared, crossing through the hatch from the umbilical with a bag slung over his shoulder. Stepping forward to greet him, Megan extended her hand. “I’m Commander Garrett, the Jefferson’s Executive Officer. Welcome aboard.”

Teyno had been on the station for several days waiting for the Jefferson to arrive. In doing so, he had grown restless. He had familiarised himself with the ship's logs and personnel files in his first day on the starbase and he was not a man who was accustomed to having nothing to do. In the past, he had always needed something to occupy his time, his mind, his thoughts. He had spent his days on the Starbase wandering around the promenade, uninterestedly browsing the shops and occaisionally having the odd velocity match with any station crew member who would play him.
But now, the ship had finally arrived, and Teyno stared at her out of the observation window. A sleek and powerful looking ship, he liked the look of her.
He had received a message to meet with the Jefferson's executive officer, so he'd emptied his quarters of what few possesions he had, slung them over his shoulder and come to meet her.
He walked the short length of the corridor to the connecting doors. They slid open to reveal a woman wearing command red and Commander's pips.
Teyno looked her up and down, then confidently walked through the door, and smiled.
Stepping forward to greet him, Megan extended her hand. “I’m Commander Garrett, the Jefferson’s Executive Officer. Welcome aboard.”
"Teyno," he said, shaking her hand with his, "good to meet you. I've been going stir crazy on that station."

"Teyno," he replied taking her offered hand. "Good to meet you. I've been going stir crazy on that station,” he added. Megan hadn’t missed the way he had looked her up and down, nor the very confident swagger with which he had boarded the ship.
“I can imagine,” Commander Garrett replied as they exited the junction room. She wasn’t one for vacations herself and waiting for reassignment with nothing to do was not her idea of fun either. “Here is all the information you will need,” she continued handing him a data padd. “This contains your room assignment, office location, as well as your security clearance and access codes. I can show you where your office or quarters are to help you get settled. It may take a few days to get accustomed to the Jefferson, but if you need anything, please do not hesitate to ask me for it,” Megan offered politely as they approached the turbolift, pressed the call button, and she waited for him to say whether he wanted to see his quarters or his office first.
<Tag Teyno>
Once they requested the right deck and the lift began to move, Megan continued. “The department is somewhat disorganized at the moment and could really use a restructuring. I hope you’re up for the challenge,” she added, only somewhat joking.
<Tag Teyno>
When the lift stopped and the doors opened, the two officers exited and began to walk down the corridor. They’d barely taken a few steps when they ran into Valad heading in their direction. “Lieutenant Tavik, this is Lieutenant Teyno, the Jefferson’s new tactical/security chief. This is our Chief Operations Officer,” Megan provided the introductions between the two men, getting the feeling that perhaps Valad had something he wanted to say but didn’t know how to bring it up with Teyno there too.

"Let's head for my office; I've had enough of sitting around doing nothing for the time being." Said Teyno
Once they requested the right deck and the lift began to move, Megan continued. “The department is somewhat disorganized at the moment and could really use a restructuring. I hope you’re up for the challenge,” she added, only somewhat joking.
"Don't you worry, Commander, I'll soon whip them into shape."
This is our Chief Operations Officer,” Megan provided the introductions between the two men.
Teyno shook hands with the newcomer, "Nice to meet you," he said.
Something in the man's face told Teyno that he wanted to speak to the first officer.
"Well, I'll let you two catch up," said Teyno, "I suppose I should report in to the Captain at some time?"
<Megan>
"Thank you for your help, ma'am." Teyno said, entering his office.
It was a nice space, with a desk, a console, a small sofa and a window. He threw his bag onto the sofa and sat down at his desk. As he began to read through the security reports, he could see that the Commander hadn't been lying about the poor state of the department. Teyno decided that he would get to work on the problem straight away. He called a meeting of all security personnel for one hour's time.
In the meantime he pondered what he should do, maybe go to the bridge? No, there would be time for that later. He didn't want to go to his quarters yet, so instead he decided to make his way down to survey the brigs.
--------------------
The large door to the brig complex slide aside to admit him and he was surprised to see an officer on duty. An attractive young ensign sat behind the console, looking bored.
Teyno flashed a smile at her and said, "Hello there, I'm Lieutenant Teyno, the new Chief of Security, and who might you be?"
<Marina>
"I'm surprised to find an officer on brig duty in spacedock," Said Teyno, "we don't have a prisoner in, do we?"
"No," said Marina, "the duty roster hasn't been changed since the last chief left."
"Ah, of course, well, consider yourself relieved for now, but make sure ya don't forget about the general security meeting in cargo bay 1." Teyno grinned.
<Marina>
------------------
Teyno arrived in the cargo bay to find the ship's compliment of security officers waiting for him. They stood to attention as he entered the room.
"At ease." He said, taking his place in front of the group.
He raised his voice to address the group, "Okay people, let me be blunt. I am not an easy man to get along with, but I am very good at what I do. I may be a newly commissioned officer, but I can assure you, I have been working with starfleet a lot longer than most of you. If you follow my orders correctly, you won't go far wrong.
"I've been going over the reports for the last few months and it seems that your previous chief has let things slide. That stops here. We are all going to have to work very hard to get this department back on track. As of this moment, you will be working full shifts while we are in Starbase. You are welcome to take shoreleave in your free time, but otherwise I expect you to be working hard."
There were a few looks of dissent at these words from some of the younger crew members; usually when a ship was docked in Starbase, most of the crew were allowed to take their duty time off.
Teyno continued, "I will be arranging a series of security drills over the coming days. We will also be performing a complete security sweep of the ship so as to make sure my predecessor hasn't missed anything. If there is so much as a kitchen utensil out of place on this ship, I want to know about it. I will expect department-wide readiness reports by tomorrow morning. Have I made myself clear?"
"Yes sir!" Came the reply.
"Dismissed!" Barked Teyno, and the security crew made their way to the exit.

He had left Commander Garretts office, it seemed she had listened to what he had said. He noticed she was caught off guard by his change in speech. He hoped she would take what he said and think about it. Whether she believed it or not you can not serve to masters and seemed to be the part she was missing. He missed the Scavenger a lot it was a good ship until the end.
He walked to his quarters and entered, sitting down at his desk he opened a secure channel to his home world. His adoptive mother answered with smiles and the real feeling of concern.
" What is it little one whats bugging you"
" I can't seem to hide anything from you mother, I'm still concerned about Commander Garrett and what may or may not happen. I want all information availible on her as soon as you can arrange to include who she works for and the name of her boss."
" I will make sure you get what you want the federation is still a little primitive to us but we will aquire what you ask. We will ensure its done quitely the last time we were rushed and set of a few alarms this time will be differnt."
" How dose the vote go to join?"
" Its a very touchy subject right now, our people do not think the federation is ready yet for us. The only reason its even being brought up is because of your reports some good some bad but it shows that they might be ready to explore with what we can teach them. It will be close but I have to admit personaly I will not vote for it"
" I understand mother you are the wises person I know, I too have doubts I never realized how secretive my speices was until now. They can't see the big picture at times becaue of this''
" Son you may be human in physical sense thats where it stops, you are there future what they could become and that reason alone is why there's talk of joining because they could become greater then what they are. I have to go now but you will get everything on Commander Garrett in a few days my son until then be at peace"
He closed the channel and just sat back trying to clear is mind and relax.

Two days after being released from sickbay, Nathan went out of his quarters on his own. He still felt apprehensive about leaving without guard attendance, but he knew the danger was over. He could leave his children safely with Jayden, who would join him in the pool with them soon enough.
He slung the bag he carried over his shoulder, took a deep breath, then took another step forward, listening as the door slid shut behind him. He looked left, then right, noticing that the corridor was eerily empty. He shook his head in dismay, chiding himself for his vivid imagination.
He took another deep breath then walked towards the turbolift. He ordered it to take him to the security deck, then got off, feeling slightly apprehensive. He knew Orlov had been replaced as head of the security team, by someone called Teyno. The name was familiar to him, as his sister had once spoken of such a person. Yes, he definitely recalled the name, but would soon see whether this person was the same as Sonak had described to him as being her daughter's godfather.
For a second, he looked back a the turbolift doors, noting for recollection's purposes that he was now on deck 8, then walked onward. "Lieutenant Teyno, I'm Nathan van Breughel, ship's chief medical err...officer. Could I have a word with you?"
He stepped into the office, not quite waiting for an answer. He took the younger man's features in, automatically matching them to the image he received after Miriya's birth. "I wish to talk to you about the security detail I was assigned for protection. I understand there was a miscommunication somewhere, and I wish you to know that I in no way blame the then acting departmenthead."
The doctor paused, taking a moment to set his bag down on the floor. "I learned he was very young, probably promoted too fast. I can understand that, and so does my partner. We ask that no punitive actions are taken on our behalf, it was not his fault that my daughter was threatened and my son kidnapped, along with the sons of Commander and Captain Reynolds. I hope you can understand that."
Once Teyno had answered, Nathan offered a small smile. "My sister spoke very highly of you," he continued, changing the subject, "she would be very pleased to learn that you finally found your way into Starfleet. She did say you were cut out to be an officer, despite your ah...scoundrel behaviour at times."
He picked up his bag again. "I am due in the pool for my exercises," he explained his evident hurry, "I was stuck in sickbay for days, recovering. Please come by our quarters later if you wish, I believe Jayden and I still need to be debriefed on previous situation?" Then he remembered something. "Oh, and I think Ensign Marina Garrett should be recommended for her quick responses after I was attacked in sickbay. It is entirely possible her quick action saved my life."

Teyno took in the man's features and beckoned him into his office.
Nathan stepped into the office, and spoke, "I wish to talk to you about the security detail I was assigned for protection. I understand there was a miscommunication somewhere, and I wish you to know that I in no way blame the then acting departmenthead."
"Okay..." said Teyno.
"Well, Doctor, as far as I'm concerned, what happened before my arrival is beyond my jurisdiction. As for the officer concerned, it is my understanding that he's been transferred. What I can tell you is that I will not stand for such sloppy security now that I'm in charge. Rest assured I will do my best to protect the ship's crew in future." Said Teyno, seriously.
Teyno was surprised to hear that a Starfleet officer had thought highly of him, but didn't let his face show it.
"Ah yes, the Vulcan Captain," said Teyno, in an offhand manner, "What was the ship...the Vesuvio?"
"Vesuvius." Nathan corrected him.
"Ah yes." Said Teyno.
Nathan picked up his bag again.
"Really?" said Teyno, interestedly, "I shall have to look into that."
As the doctor left, Teyno breathed a sigh of relief. He had thought the doctor would be coming round to order him to sickbay for a physical. That was the last thing he needed, nosey people asking him about his species, his origins, his past.
