The Vulcan nodded, while studying the turqoise sky above them. Dark clouds were coming in from what they had determined would be the planet's east. She felt the humidity and the pressure rising, though the blazing temperature did not change. As a Vulcan she didn't really mind the heat; even though raised on Earth, the resistance to heat was innate, part of her DNA.
"Set up the shelters," she ordered, "and the common shelter as well. There is a storm coming up, and from the looks of it, it is going to be bad." She frowned. "I cannot determine how much time we do have, but whatever you all were ordered to do, tend to it quickly."
Sonak pulled Kerry-Anne along by her arm, the two women disappearing into the forest. "We were going to hunt for food," she reminded the younger woman, "and as I said, we have to hurry."
The forest was a dense mash of roots, leaves and long branches. The two women had to literally fight their way through on occasion, to get to what their barely functioning tricorder had incidated was safe to consume. When the instrument finally died, they had a fair impression of what was safe, and what was deadly poison to them. However, many things they found would have to be tested by trial and error, if the safe items would run out.
Arms gathered with many samples, Sonak and Kerry-Anne returned to the camp, hours later. Darkness was just not setting in yet but the sun was very low over the horizon. The Vulcan admiral was pleased to see that several smaller shelters had been set up, as well as a reasonably large one, that would allow for the crew to gather.
"Paikea, have you found any animals in your scouts?" she asked of the security chief. She knew of the Human need for animal sustenance and she wouldn't deny them a desire to consume meat, even though she would politely refuse. For as long as she could live on what the forest provided, she would deny meat. "Anything suitable for you to make a stew from, for the crew?" she added, as if in afterthought.
Then she nodded towards the lake. "We should make a raft and explore it in the morning," she suggested, "perhaps we can even find a few fish that are worth our while. Meanwhile, we should catalogue anything we find by hand." She paused. "Daya, I want you and Maxil to manufacture us some crude weapons. There seem to be rocks in abundance and from the forest I am sure you can gather enough long sticks to manufacture spears."
There was so much to do, and so little time before dark. Then, the much dreaded storm was suddenly upon them, and the rain was pouring down, drenching the stranded officers before they could flee into their shelter. Thunder roared overhead, the lighting blinding them as it soared across the sky. "Quickly!" Sonak ordered, wincing as lighting struck what had remained of their computer, reducing it to a smoking and blackened husk. "Turn off anything electrical that we have remaining to us, the lighting seems drawn to it!"

Daya stood in his room, packing a variety of things into a small bag, the wall to his left which had once held a collage of weapons, now had a few bare spaces, from a couple knives he had taken off and placed in his belongings. Along with a gift given to him by a student during his instucting days, he placed the knives in the bag, and a couple on his person. Leaving his room he walked to the transporter room, where most of the other senior staff had assembled. He waited until they were ready to leave then stepped up on the platform, with the familiar feeling of the being beamed his skinned tingled as he found himself on the planet surface.
"Ensign Zanak, set up your equipment. Commander Daya, secure the perimeter. Commander Apirana, please assist Mr Zanak. Doctor, you and I are going food hunting. Though we have supplies, we cannot be certain how long they may last us. Additionally, we may find something new and usable." She paused, turning to her first officer. "Can you survey our surrounding?" she queried. "At present we lack a science officer.
"aye ma'am" Daya said in response, taking his tricorder out and walking in a wide circle around the "base camp" Keeping an eye on the tricorder, he looked around at the country side to get an idea of where they were. Taking a sniff of the air, he smelled water and knew a storm was coming. Keeping that thought in his head he continued to scan the area, until he noticed a glitch in the tricorder, he tried to adjust but spark sturck his hand and he dropped the tricorder. Looking at the tricorder with a confused glare he kicked it back to towards the center of the officers, before making his report.
"i didn't get much from the readings, just lots of trees and a few caves scattered around, nothing that would be suitable for cover though. A storm is coming though, might be pretty bad" "Set up the shelters," she ordered, "and the common shelter as well. There is a storm coming up, and from the looks of it, it is going to be bad." She frowned. "I cannot determine how much time we do have, but whatever you all were ordered to do, tend to it quickly." Daya moved over to help set up the common shelter, before setting up his own. The soft ground made it easier to get the shelters in place, and with the trees to provide shade, it would make a decent camp.
"Daya, I want you and Maxil to manufacture us some crude weapons. There seem to be rocks in abundance and from the forest I am sure you can gather enough long sticks to manufacture spears." "I have a few knives of my own, but I'll whip up some spears if nothing else" Looking over at Maxil, he nodded as he handed him a d'k tahg and led the way into the forest. Picking up a few branches, Daya started chipping away at them, and quickly had a small hand full of spears, roughly as long as he was. Looking over at Maxil, who also had a few spears made, he heading back to the camp site, putting the spears in the common shelter. Almost as soon as he and Maxil had finished stacking them, it started raining, Daya moved over to the side of the shelter, listening to the admiral give orders about the electronics, Daya oddly felt as ease with the sounds of the storm mingling with the outside.

The rain was nothing new to Paikea Apirana and all reality there was nothing better than a light misty rain falling in the morning. If it wasn't for the thunder and lightneing, Paikea would be playing in the rain like a little child.
"Adam, are you still having fun?" Paikea said giving his friend a genuine smile," don't you love the smell of burnt out electrical equipment?"
(Adam)
Under normal circumstances, Paikea doubted that he would be having so much fun in a thunderstorm, but it the last few minutes it seemed that things had totally changed. Even his hatred towards Sonak Reckus seemed to have dissipated some.
"Admiral, I think we should do this at least twice a year," Paikea said trying to play nice with his Vulcan superior," though I think we should camp somewhere with less humidity and rainfall."
"I quite agree with you commander," the Vulcan replied, "perhaps you would like to put in a few suggestions? I am certain we can even use a holodeck if necessary."
It was rather strange to hear himself trying to be funny and the worst part was that for the first time Paikea realized that he might not be as funny as he had once thought. The one good thing about all of this, was the fact that the storm would be relatively short. By next morning it would be as muggy and hot as it was when they arrived.
The Next Morning
Being an early riser was one of the best things when one went camping. Being able to view the sun rise over the morning sky was an amazing site on any planet. Paikea allowed himself these few minutes before he began his morning duties. Knowing that they would be stuck on the planet for at least a few days, Paikea knew that they would need to eat off the planet. He was rather please to find a small lake a few kilometers away where he could go fish, something that he was very good at.
"Daya, do you want to make a raft or do you prefer to fish with just spears?" Pai asked of the marine

Sonak woke to a sound that she identified with birds singing, except that scans prior to beaming down had shown no aviational fauna on the planet. She found it oddly refreshing as she sat up in the tent she shared with the doctor. A little stiffly, from sleeping on a solid floor, the Vulcan crawled from the tent, to be bathed in blazing sunlight.
Sitting up, she closed her eyes, tilting her face up towards the sun, savouring the heat. That the air was humid, didn't seem to bother her that much for the moment. When she opened her eyes, she saw Daya and Paikea balancing on what appeared a self-made wooden raft, somewhere near a hundred meters from the shoreline.
"Good morning," she greeted Maxil, "are you on breakfast duty?" Not that they had assigned any duties, but she had to say something to the young man, beyond a mere good morning. She nodded over to the two men on the raft. "It appears they are having all the fun, and I do not believe the doctor is yet awake. Would you please wake her, gently mind you, while I go refresh myself?"
She walked over to the lake's shoreline, pulled off most of her clothing, feeling no embarassment whatsoever - one of the advantages of being able to control your feelings - and waded into the water, dressed in nothing more but her Starfleet-issue undergarments. She washed her tunic and shorts, laying them out on the flat boulders that lay just beyond the water and onto the short beach, so that they could dry out.
Taking some of the soap-sand that was provided in their survival packs, she took to washing her hair, then waded deeper to take a swim. The water was reasonably cool, but not uncomfortable, and very clear. Even when she reached a depth where she could no longer comfortably stand, and soon lost her footing altogether, the water was still crystal clear. Diving under, she explored the gravel bottom, which after a few meters sloped off into fine sand and plants. Fish-like creatures were swiming around in abundance, varying greatly in size and colour/patterning.
Resurfacing for air, Sonak swam up to the raft with strong, sure strokes, heaving herself up, thereby disturbing the precarious balance of both men. "Give me a spear," she ordered, and was promptly handed one. Taking care to avoid Paikea's line, she dove under again. A meter-long brown-ish fish stroked past her left thigh, coating it in a grey-ish mush. She felt it sting and quickly brushed it off with sand from the lake's bottom. With a strong stroke, she speared the culprit and was on her way back up when a larger fish streaked up and brushed her back and right arm. Grimacing, she worked to swim back to the surface, having no real idea how deep she'd dived.
With effort, she heaved the big fish onto the raft. "That is lunch, gentlemen," she gasped, while letting go of the raft. If she swam quickly, she was certain she'd make it back to shore, having no sense of what the fish had done to her, or whether the slime coat was poisonous. All she knew was that it stung and left a strong burning sensation, to the point of leaving no sensation at all.
The Vulcan crawled up the beach, laying herself down on the largest flat boulder that she could find without going too far. "Doctor!" she called, closing her eyes. She felt herself starting to drift, and fought against unconsciousness. "A fish," she gasped, lying with her black flat against the surprisingly cool stone. It helped, a little. "It burns." She opened her eyes. "Paikea has one, on his raft."

In the tent Kerry-Anne slept like the dead, if left alone she could have easily slept until mid day but as it happened a voice woke her up, she couldn’t make out what he said but she knew by the voice who it was. She lifted her head ever so slightly as she let out a low growl, “you have ten seconds to scram.. before I seal your lips together.. don’t worry it won’t hurt much.”
The Bajoran smiled to herself as she lay her head back down, she had never been a morning person never.. in the academy her roommate would regularly have to physically drag her out of bed in the morning.
Drifting back to sleep he was again disturbed by the voice, this time she dragged her rather tired muscles in her arms to lift herself up. As she sat up she took several deep breaths followed sighs of annoyance and tiredness.
She moved to the exit of her tent and stuck her head out into the sun light, her eyes felt like the bright light was burning them out of her head. “Ah this is a stupid idea… should have injected myself with something so I could stay on the ship.”
She slowly was able to open her eyes enough to see the surroundings, she let out another sigh before she smelt something, she took in another few lungs full of air through her nose before she could recognise what it was… Coffee at that moment she wa focused on one thing and one thing alone… finding coffee
Like a caveman she stalked the camp grounds until she found her prey, the unsuspecting pot of coffee never saw it coming, she grabbed it with both hands and poured herself a cup. Bringing it under her nose she savoured the smell. When an ensign walked up behind her and reached out for the cup and said. “Oh I was saving that.” Kennedy squinted her eyes and let out a growl that would have frightened a klingon targ away from a meal. The Ensign backed off and left Kennedy to her hard won coffee.
She had drank about a quarter of it when she heard a yell in the Admirals voice, the yell itself nothing that worrying but the word she yelled was. ‘Doctor.”
Kennedy set down her cup and ran for the coast of the lake, she saw Sonak laying down and as Kennedy leant down beside her Sonak said.
"A fish," she gasped, lying with her black flat against the surprisingly cool stone. It helped, a little. "It burns." She opened her eyes. "Paikea has one, on his raft."
Kennedy first looked at the small patches of skin that looked a little bit red and enflamed, before she cast her eyes to the raft with the fish that was about a metre and a half long. She waved over Maxil and said. “My tent… get my med kit.”
He returned and Kennedy pressed a hypospray to Sonak’s neck. “Nothing to worry about Admiral this will get rid of the pain.. you will no doubt have a rash for a day or so but nothing to worry about… What worries me more is why a fish that big would have evolved such a defence it would normally suggest that there is something bigger than it out there that would love to eat it.”

Commander Parsons presided over setting up camp while the Admiral and Doctor searched for food. By the time the returned, the individual shelters had been erected along with a larger common shelter.
A short time later the storm began to roll in and it seemed electrical. Adam wondered if it would be just a thunderstorm or if it would be a more dangerous electrical storm. The Admiral seemed to think it was the latter and ordered the team's remaining powered devices to be turned off.
Parsons thought about offering his knife to the men making spears, but it appeared Commander Daya had brought along more than one knife of his own. Before long, there were enough spears for everyone. In the event of an attack by a large animal or intelligent being, the officers would have some means of defense.
Parsons chuckled a little, "Well this isn't quite what I had in mind, but we're making due. The only burning smell I would welcome right now, would be a slab of meat over a camp fire."
A couple of the officers agreed.
The Admiral responded pleasantly, and Adam hypothesized, "I wonder if these electrical storms are not at least a partial cause for our equipment's malfunction ... perhaps when combined with the planet's natural humidity."
The officers were treated to a beautiful sunrise in the morning.
Parsons had helped Daya and Pai construct a raft at daybreak, and the two officers headed out onto the lake for a fishing expedition. "Good luck, gentlemen, bring me back a Walleye if it's not too much trouble," Adam said as Daya and Pai shoved off.
The three officers watched as the Admiral stripped off her uniform and waded into the lake. Adam had always thought the Admiral was an attractive woman, but had never seen her in such a state of undress. He grew embarrassed as he watched her and turned to monitor the raft's movement out onto the lake.
Adam watched the Admiral retrieve a large fish and then swim to shore. The Vulcan crawled up the beach, laying herself down on a large flat boulder. "Doctor!" she called, closing her eyes. Adam realized for she was injured and noticed a redness on one of her legs.
"Doctor Kennedy," Adam yelled, but Kerry-Anne was already on her way and knelt next to Sonak on the opposite side as the XO. "A fish," the Admiral gasped. "It burns." She opened her eyes. "Paikea has one, on his raft."
The two officers had brought the raft in, and Maxil went to the Doctor's tent to retrieve a medkit as ordered.
The immediate effects of the sting seemed to be under control after a hypospray and the Admiral's condition seemed to be stable.

Daya awoke as he heard his shelter mate get up and out of the tent, it seems Paikea was an early riser. After rubbing his eyes for a few moments Daya got up and followed after him, blinking from the sun light that flooded his vision."Lets go fishing, we need some breakfast" Daya said in the midst of a serious stretch "Daya, do you want to make a raft or do you prefer to fish with just spears?" Pai asked of the marine "We can build a raft quickly, it would be easier to carry more fish that way." Daya and Paikea went in the woods and gathered the necessary wood to build a make shift raft, and with help from Commander Parsons, soon had a floating fishing boat. While Parons opted to stay on solid ground, Daya and Paikea braved the waters, and after a few moments balancing they soon were tossing their spears into the water, catching almost nothing.
When the admiral woke and waved to the two officer out on the water, Daya waved back and tossed another spear, finally catching a rather large brown fish. Stepping on the fish with his boot, he pulled the spear from the gaping creature just before something caught his eye. He saw the admiral stripping off her clothes before wading into the water to bathe. Although he had never really known her that well, he was pleasently surprised by the view. Before he knew it, he had back to throwing spears and missing fish. The commander noticed his superior swimming towards them and rather enjoying the water from the looks of things. When she dived down under the surface, Daya took care not to throw towards her direction.
Resurfacing for air, Sonak swam up to the raft with strong, sure strokes, heaving herself up, thereby disturbing the precarious balance of both men. "Give me a spear," she ordered, and was promptly handed one. Taking care to avoid Paikea's line, she dove under again. Daya watched for a moment trying to see where she had gone, and before he knew it, she returned, holding a larger brown fish on the spear."That is lunch, gentlemen," she gasped, while letting go of the raft. Taking the spear from her, he noticed a red mark on leg, but thought nothing of it, brushing it off as an optical illusion of sorts, until she swam back to shore and called for the doctor. Grabbing a make shift paddel, Daya began pushing the raft back to the shore.

Kerry Anne stood up and brushed off the sand on her knees as she looked around and said. “I don’t think it is wise to eat that particular fish by the way, no doubt the whatever it does to cause a rash on contact with skin will be worse if you put it in your mouth.. and I can’t tell if cooking it will neutralize the poison.”
She looked back down at Admiral Sonak and said. “It may itch later but don’t scratch it you will only make it worse.”
She packed up the med kit and made sure everything was free from dirt and sand before placing it back into the small case they sat it.
She walked away from the Admiral and the gathering crowd around her, realising that she had left something important left unguarded.. her coffee.. more importantly her morning coffee with out it she couldn’t function during the day.
She found her prize sitting on the log where she left it, however before she could reach it, an ensign picked up the cup looked around and tipped the contents out. Her mouth fell open in shock and her eyes widened in annoyance.
She watched the ensign walk off to wash the cup in the lake with a deadly look in her eye, if looks could kill he would have been dead five times over by now.
She skulked off back to her tent and sat inside with the look of a pouting five year old on her face, she really didn’t want to be out camping.. she preferred the luxury of replicator and sonic showers not roughing it.
And thinking of sonic showers she realised it was probably about time she bathed.. pulling off her top and leaving on her underwear she stomped to the side of the lake holding soap and stuff for her hair.
She dipped a toe in the water, and let out a minor shriek as she felt how unexpectedly cold it was, she considered not going in but thought a few minutes of cold was better than stinking the camp up.

Sonak remained lying in the blazing sun for a while, oblivious to the effects on her skin. Yet it seemed to have a positive effect on the rash on her leg, as it stung less by the minute. Slowly, she sat up and examined the injury herself, marveling at the fact that the injury was red in colour, rather than green. Her medically trained mind reasoned that perhaps it was something in the fish' that had her skin turn bright red. Carefully, she turned herself over, so she was lying on the rock with her back exposed to the sun. Sighing, she tried to relax a little, knowing that soon enough there was enough work to be done. In essence, she agreed with her doctor; the fish should not be eaten before the effects on a Human were examined. Yet, could she ask of them to expose themselves to such danger? Of course, she herself wouldn't eat any fish, unless she absolutely had no other choice in the matter. As a vegetarian, she already didn't consume meat, but she considered a fish part of such diet as well. Yet, there seemed enough fruits and possible vegetables about. Near the water there was a thick reet which could probably be cooked and she had discovered potato-like roots which could be just as edible. If only the electrical storm hadn't destroyed their equipment. Sighing a second time, she sat up and reached for the clothes she'd laid out to dry. They were dry enough, but far too hot for her. Folding the garments over one arm, she walked back to the tent and retrieved a dress of a lighter fabric. Seconds later, she emerged wearing a bright red dress which quite contrasted with her now relatively tanned skin. She still went barefoot, which was merely a practicality for her as she opted to wade back into the water and start picking out the roots she thought would make a good basis for a soup. "Maxil, any hope of repairing at least one tricorder, cannibalising the other ones for spare parts?" she called back, "I believe the doctor would be ever grateful if you could manage." And if not, it would at least keep the engineer occupied for a while. Raising herself up, she offered Daya a smile. "Did you have a good catch?" she asked conversationally, before her sharp hearing picked up something in the forest. "To arms," she ordered immediately, wading back to the shore, accepting Adam's assisting hand to steady her. "Something is either watching us, or following us, from the forest. I can hear something approaching." (Mr Carvver, your way in

((Sorry this is going to probably be rather short I hardly have any time))
Tim Carvver controlled the shuttle this was the location that he had been ordered to rendavous with the ship yet the ship was not there. Suddenly he lost control of the shuttle which would begin to plummet towards the surface creating a dazzling display of colors through the atmosphere possibly seen as a falling meteor or something of the sort. Until finally the shuttle came to a thunderous halt upon the surface of the planet turning the shuttle into scrap Tim laying motionless all the same.

As she scrubbed the soap out of her hair she caught a glimpse of an orange streak in the sky, it vanished within seconds of spotting it and it took her a few seconds to think of what it could have been. She heard the Admiral call for everybody to pick up arms.
Kerry-Anne spun her head around in the direction of Sonak’s voice, she dunked her head under the water once more before moving as fast as she could back to the shore.
The rest of the senior officers were doing as Sonak ordered and picked up hand made weapons or in extreme case big sticks, Kerry However thought it more important to run to her tent and get some clothes on, after all she was a doctor not a gladiator, fighting with spears and rocks most certainly wasn’t her forte.
After quickly dressing and picking up her med kit she ran out of her tent, and towards the woods where the crew had run off to in search of whatever Sonak deemed a threat.
She saw a crowd forming around something that was giving off smoke, she approached and looked down, it was a piece of debris but more importantly the debris had a letter on it. It appeared to be an E. that in itself wasn’t important but what was is that it was clear that with the colour of the debris and the English language letter on it all pointed to it being a shuttle craft.
She looked up and said. “That explains the orange flash I saw a minute ago Admiral.. I assumed it was a small asteroid passing through the atmosphere but this would suggest it was a crashing shuttle… the flash in the sky I saw was toward the east.. we should get there fast I would assume whoever was in the shuttle will need medical attention.”

The Doctor stood and brushed herself off, “I don’t think it is wise to eat that particular fish by the way, no doubt the whatever it does to cause a rash on contact with skin will be worse if you put it in your mouth.. and I can’t tell if cooking it will neutralize the poison.”
Doctor Kennedy packed up her med kit and retrieved her coffee. A moment late she emerged from her tent and pulled off her top stomped to the side of the lake in her underwear holding soap. She dipped a toe in the water, and let out a small shriek. Parsons smiled and turned back to the Admiral. "Would you like some help getting up Admiral?
<TAG Sonak>
Adam was a little disappointed that there wouldn't be any fish for lunch, at least not unless they found another species. Luckily the Admiral had identified several fruits, vegetables, and roots that could be eaten.
Sonak was able to rise after a short rest and busied herself with collecting roots near the shore. She had an arm full when she shouted, "To arms."
The Admiral waded back to shore as Pai and Daya scrambled for spears. She accept Adam's assisting hand to steady her. "Something is either watching us, or following us, from the forest. I can hear something approaching."
Doctor Kennedy noted that she had seen an orange streak in the sky a moment earlier as she ran to her tent for some clothes.
Parsons accepted a spear from Daya, and the two of them moved into the woods with Pai. A few other officers followed. A short way into the woods, the officers found scorch marks and pieces of debris. It was quickly identified as belonging to a Federation shuttlecraft.
As the crew moved farther into the woods Adam identified what appeared to be the cockpit and dropped his spear to run over to the craft. He and the others began pulling debris aside. Inside what was the cockpit of the shuttle lay an injured and very shaken officer.
Commander Parsons took hold of his head to stabilize it and asked, "What is your name? Can you hear me? I am Commander Adam Parsons of the Federation."
"Ensign Tim Carvver," came the unsteady reply.

.:.Backpost.:.
Tim Carvver lightly kissed his son Michael on his forehead and smiled as he stood up looking towards Brianna, "Another shuttle will be by to take you guys to the ship." He said turning around and entering the shuttle waving as the hatch behind him closed.
He sighed heavily sitting down behind the controls, "Pre flight checklist complete, prepare to remove docking clamps." He said into the comm unit inside the shuttle it was a relatively short flight to the ship, and another larger shuttlecraft would come by later to pick up his family...
.:.Crash.:.
Timothy continued to try and regain control of the shuttle, "Computer cause of the anamoly?"
"Unknown crash imminent."
He sighed heavily, "Yeah thanks a lot." He said pressing buttons across his panel trying to override the autopilot and change it to manual, however all the keys were jammed he seen the trees getting closer through the fiery scene on the viewport. He was beginning to doubt the slightest chance that he would be able to regain control of the shuttle and the controls were still jammed. He clasped his hands on the panel bracing himself...
.:.Present.:.
Commander Parsons took hold of his head to stabilize it and asked, "What is your name? Can you hear me? I am Commander Adam Parsons of the Federation."
Tim felt his head being stabilized, "Ensign...Tim.....Carvver." He said slowly before his eyes would once more blink out, he was out cold once more...

Nodding, Sonak followed the doctor's gaze towards the forest. "All the same, we do not know who is or was aboard." She watched as Kennedy packed her medical case and sped after the other officers.
Being barefoot, Sonak didn't think it was wise to follow them into the forest. Branches could make fine sharp objects and pierce a skin easily. And she had no desire to injure herself any further than she already was though, admittingly, the rash really only just burned and didn't seem to have any averse affects on her (yet).
Following at a slower pace, tentatively picking her path, the Vulcan finally joined the group, which surrounded the motionless form of what appeared to be a Human ensign. With Kennedy already kneeling beside the officer in question, Sonak held her distance, not wanting to intrude on the doctor. From this distance, she could see the Human was alive, as she could see the rise and fall of his chest while he laboured to breathe. "When he is stabilised, take him back to camp," she ordered, "I am placing him in your care doctor. Adam, brief him on our situation when he regains consciousness, and see if the shuttle has any usable spare parts. We might as well scavenge it as it is beyond repair."
A bright flash and a yelp caught her attention. At first, she merely offered a small smile, then when a piercing scream was followed, she turned and ran back at full speed towards the camp, no longer conscious of the hazards of the forest floor. By the time she reached camp, the hem of her dress was torn, her legs showing a criss-cross pattern of green scratches and her feet left a bloody print where she set them down.
Upon reaching the camp, she held her own spear aloft, ready to defend herself against anything. Then she spotted Maxil lying prone on the floor, a look of anguish on his face, his fingers clenched still around the spanner he had been using. The smoking remains of an unidentifyable piece of equipment was lying nearby. Quietly, she knelt beside her chief engineer and checked his vitals. Fortunately, he was still alive but his body showed severe burn-marks. First aid practice demanded that the burns be cooled, and the only source of coolness was the lake.
She knew the water was pure and untainted, as exams had shown, therefor she carefully gathered the form of the chief engineer up in her arms and carried him to the lake, wading into the water until she was waist deep before lowering him into it. Her strong arms held him afloat, while she submerged the majority of his body. Her own shadow shielded his face from the blazing sun. "Talk to me Maxl," she spoke softly, "what were you trying to do, when you knew touching the equipment was dangerous?" Releasing her hold on him with one hand, she dipped her free hand into the water, then held it above his face, letting the water trickle onto his skin.
When she thought it was enough, she cradled him and carried him into the main shelter, where she laid him out on the cooled floor. "Doctor, I need antiseptics and bandages," she called out. "Daya, see if you can find us something to drink. Paikea, you stay with our other patient and keep him company."
She paused, her eyes settling on her loyal first officer. "How about something to eat?" she asked gently.

<slight backpost>
As their first day and evening planetside had progressed, Zanak found himself beginning to adapt to the away team's somewhat primitive conditions much better than he had expected. Once the effort to organize camp, collect food and water, and fashion weapons and tools out of both what metals they had in their supplies as well as the plentiful rock and wood around them had gotten well underway, he relished the opportunity to improvise various aids to their collective survival.
On the other hand, the weather on this planet was showing its caprice in the frequent and unpredictable squalls that kept making their various tasks more difficult. Several handwritten log observations (in lieu of electronic recording) about the environment had been lost when a brief landslide had washed away the container where they were stored during the last storm. The climate seemed to be unusually extreme in many respects, even for a predominantly tropical biosphere such as this one. Interestingly enough, several species of both flora and fauna that they had managed to observe and collect thus far were proving to having a wide variety of extraordinary defence mechanisms, such as poisonous secretions, bioelectric discharges, and other exotic means of protecting themselves and their offspring.
Given such a combative evolutionary environment, one might have expected certain species to dominate at the expense of even slightly weaker ones, but seemingly contrary to scientific plausibility, each species observed seemed to not only thrive but to actively multiply and even mutate against the odds. The conditions reminded him strongly of the purported results of the Genesis experiments conducted by the Federation in the late 23rd century, though no evidence of artificial design had cropped up yet. In honor of the early Terran biologist who was the first on his world to postulate the theory of natural selection, Maxil suggested naming this planet Darwinia, given that everything they had discovered here to date seemed to confound and exceed all the previous knowledge regarding adaptive evolution of species. Perhaps they would eventually get the chance to analyze in depth the underlying genetics at work here, but first they would have to survive an environment seemingly stuck in evolutionary overdrive.
One particular example of the dangerous fauna had earlier threatened the camp, when a small swarm of 8 centimetre-long insects with vibrant orange exoskeletons and what looked like sharp stingers gathered around some fruit they had collected. Fortunately, a dose of chemical repellant from a survival kit was apparently effective in driving them back into the jungle, though Zanak had later discovered (and killed) one specimen that had been diverted from the rest by its attraction to a cup of coffee left out from breakfast. Zanak thanked the stars that he had caught the little bugger soon enough; his own Trill biochemistry was extremely sensitive to insect bites and stings.
After that brief excitement, things had been going relatively smoothly and uneventfully, apart from the disappointing discovery that a coconut-like fruit that seemed to grow in abundance throughout the region yielded a milk which was moderately acidic and therefore unfit for consumption. It wasn't until the rest of the team had departed from camp, leaving Zanak to tinker with the malfunctioning tricorders, that matters started to build to another climax. After scavenging the dead micro-fusion generator for parts and collecting some of the acidic milk (from one of the fruits) in a medkit phial, Zanak managed to assemble several crude batteries and linked them up in series in an attempt to provide enough electrical power to feed a tricorder. It was no easy task, but a few false starts, bad contacts on the tricorder circuitry terminals, and mild electrical shocks later he got the little display to finally light up. What faint readings were possible with the underpowered device, however, gave Zanak a new puzzle; atmospheric distortions were being detected several miles up in the atmosphere above the camp, caused by what looked like a sizable metallic object.
It was the other reading that had him truly concerned, though; a distinct trace of negative energy emissions, blinding any readings of the normal electromagnetic spectrum within the (admittedly) limited range of the tricorder. Zanak was aware of only two things that might emit such negative energy: natural astatine mineral deposits, or an artificially generated duonetic field. Astatine might well be found in the surrounding strata, but probably not at levels sufficient to register the extreme levels of negative energy he was detecting; in fact, the emissions were so strong, that what little power he had managed to feed the tricorder so far was being gradually sapped away already. The presence of such massive negative energy in the area would serve to explain the mysterious failure of their powered equipment, and now it became a question of what was generating such energy and nullifying its effect.
The tricorder, just prior to its display fading out for good, had shown where the negative energy was concentrated the most, just a few meters away from the group shelter. Zanak assembled one of the standard-issue spades and set about unearthing several kilos of raw earth in the spot the readings had indicated, and soon found his spade hitting something with a sharp metallic twang. Hurriedly brushing off the dirt, he laid his hands on the cover of some kind utility box, still mostly buried, with what seemed to be activator touchpads on either side. The touchpads responded to his tap, and the lid sprung open automatically revealing something inside which brought a rueful smile to Zanak's face.
He lifted an octahedron-shaped device slightly larger in size than a football and examined its blinking surface and a touchpad on one side, similar to the touchpads on the utility box. Tapping it, however, produced an entirely different, and considerably more unwelcome response than had the previous ones. A massive electric shock almost instantly traveled from the device through his hand, and on to his brain, rendering it unconscious after a quick yell escaped his lips. The world around him jolted into a flash of blinding light and pain for a terrifying moment, than went dark...
* * *
Zanak awoke, he knew not how long after his last hazy memory, to find cool water being poured over his face, which began to bring him partly to his senses. His vision was still cloudy, however, and his extremities felt alternately numb, then stinging with a burning sensation. Voices, which he recognized as those of Sonak and Kennedy, chattered somewhat indistinctly in his ears. In a sort of out-of-body way, which was not that far from the truth, he realized that his humanoid body was being kept in a state of partial coma due to the efforts of his symbiont to provide rudimentary life support and healing. Whether his symbiont had been injured as well, he couldn't be entirely sure, but the very fact that the healing trance was working proved that the injuries could not be too severe. He decided to go with the flow, and concentrated his mind on meditation, letting his positive mental attitude stimulate the endorphins and speed recovery...

Sonak kept close watch on her chief engineer. By the relaxed expression on his face, as well as his slow but regular breathing, she determined that he had entered a form of meditation. She nodded in approval; his symbiont would need all the support it could get. The young man nearly got himself electrocuted and no doubt the symbiont had received a good jolt of the electric current as well.
It was beyond the Vulcan to know what had actually saved the Trill engineer, she lacked the technical know-how as she had anxiously avoided any and all engineering classes at the academy. She had always focused on he healing of people, rather than that of equipment.
She smiled to herself as she made the engineer comfortable, dabbing his face with a wet cloth from time to time to keep him cool. Both were healers, just not of the same category, she mused as she studied him.
Sonak looked up as something was held out to her. She smiled in appreciation as Parsons handed her what appeared to be a form of fruit juice. Setting the first cup beside her for herself, she held the second in her left hand while gently propping Zanak up in a semi-sitting position. "Maxil you need to drink something," she urged him, "you can rest again in a few seconds." She looked up. "Adam can you take over for me for a second?"
She switched places with her first officer, promising the injured engineer that she'd return. She had to check on the new arrival, coincidently a starfleet ensign named Tim Carvver. Ironically, the man was a pilot and here he had crashed his own shuttlecraft. Of course, the man couldn't be blamed; the atmosphere of this planet was treacherous enough to catch anyone by surprise.
Tilting her head, she listened to the rain that hammered down on the main shelter. The weather was certainly unpredictable too but at least when it rained, it wasn't as hot. So in the end, for the sake of her crew, she preferred the moments when it rained. For herself, she preferred the hot dry weather, as it would affect her the least. Suppressing a series of coughs, she knelt beside Kennedy and Carvver. "How is he?" she asked quietly, "has he regained consciousness yet?"

As soon as he identified himself, Ensign Carvver was unconsious again. Dr. Kennedy soon made her way forward to examine him.

"Commander's Apirana and Daya, survey the crash site. Check for any other survivors or bodies, and see if you can locate anything to identify the shuttle or anything of use," the Executive Officer ordered.

The officers scavenged what they could from the downed shuttle and carried Ensign Carvver back to camp on the Doctor's insistance that he could be moved. When the arrived, they found Maxil while repairing a piece of equipment and the Admiral tending to his care.

"How about something to eat?" she asked gently.
"Sure Admiral," Adam handed Sonak a container of juice and knelt beside Sonak and the injured Chief Engineer. The XO kept Zanak company while the Admiral went to check on Carvver.

Paikea had been assigned the task of keeping Tim Carvver company. This in itself was not a difficult task, but Paikea didn't know the human officer. At first, Paikea thought it was best to give Doctor Kennedy some peace and quiet so that she could do her work, but it soon became apparent that this was not going to be necessary because with their limited supplies they were not able to do much.
"Tim, it's nice to meet you but please no more crashing shuttles. Anyways I'm Paikea Apirana, but most people call me Pai for short," Paikea said as he started to talking to the unconscious officer," I'm the CTSO, but my true passion has always been science. I hope you have something like that as well."
Paikea was half expecting a reply from the man and he couldn't help but laugh at his thoughts. "I hope you are a lot more talkative when you wake Ensign. You must be just as eager as I was when I left the Academy."
"Commander's Apirana and Daya, survey the crash site. Check for any other survivors or bodies, and see if you can locate anything to identify the shuttle or anything of use," the Executive Officer ordered
"Yes sir, but I doubt that there would have been others in the shuttle," Paikea said," the Vesuvius was called back, I doubt they had time to assemble a complete shuttle team, but we'll look for others.
(Adam)
"Daya, when we reach the shuttle remember not to touch anything that is still on, we don't want to risk being shocked like Maxil," Paikea said as he picked up his spear and waited for Daya to get himself ready," I hate to say it but hopefully some of the rations survived the crash. It would make it a lot easier."
(Daya)
"We'll be back as soon as we can," Paikea said as both men headed back towards the shuttle.

Daya has sat down after the newest member of the team was being treated as best as the supplies could handle. While sitting he pulled out a knife and absentmindedly started to sharpen his spear, again. The commander knew he didn't have a reason for his actions, but at the time it felt like a good idea.
"Commander's Apirana and Daya, survey the crash site. Check for any other survivors or bodies, and see if you can locate anything to identify the shuttle or anything of use," the Executive Officer ordered Daya stood and stretched slightly as he rolled his eyes at Paikea's comment. "Daya, when we reach the shuttle remember not to touch anything that is still on, we don't want to risk being shocked like Maxil," Paikea said as he picked up his spear and waited for Daya to get himself ready," I hate to say it but hopefully some of the rations survived the crash. It would make it a lot easier." "Right, like I've never been shocked before, it sounds fun"
As the two walked off into the forest, Daya couldn't help but wonder why he was always teamed up with Paikea. Given their history, he had thought either one of them would have voices the opposition of being together, yet neither one had.

Pai and Daya had gone to examine the shuttle wreckage. Commander Parsons hoped they would find something of use. Rations, metal to use for tools, or other items were likely to be among the debris.
Maxil and Ensign Carvver were moved to a makeshift triage center were Doctor Kennedy did her best to make them comfortable. The Admiral supervised and assisted, but she was also still injured herself. Pai and Daya were in good condition, but had left the campsite.
Adam sat with the injured officers and pondered their situation. They still had sufficient shelter from the elements. The lake provided a good supply of fresh water. Food supplies would last another day, maybe two. This had to be the priority.
Parsons had taken several courses of survival training in his career, but this planet was so foreign that he was not confident in his ability to tell what was edible without their usual technology. He decided that the prudent thing to do would be to gather more food.
The Admiral agreed. She would stay at camp with the two injured officers while Dr. Kennedy and the XO went off for a couple of hours in search of more food. Dr. Kennedy led the way into the foliage glancing around for edible plant or animal life, and Parsons followed close behind with a spear and a sack to haul back anything they found.

Kennedy knelt down next to the injured and layed a hand on his shoulder as she quietly said, “you will be fine.. just promise not to run any marathons in the next few days hmm?”
<Tag Zanack>
After a few hours they were stable enough to be left without immediate doctors care while she went out to forage for food with Parsons, Daya and Apirana.
While Kennedy was no expert on survival, she did know enough about food items to know if something was likely to be poison or safe to eat.
She looked from left to right eyeing the varuise plants that grew on this particular planet, aside form a couple that had a rather pungent smell to them most appeared safe to eat. She stopped in front of a small bush that grew a fruit about the size of her palm and despite being a shade of grey that appeared unapitising that looked safe, she pulled out a small knife from her boot and sliced into the fruit, the juice that dripped onto her hand didn’t burn or cause an odd feeling that was another positive sign.
She brought the fruit to her nose and smelt it, looking for the distinctive smell of acid that some citrus like fruits gave off, while the smell was akin to an unwashed dog it didn’t smell like it was poison, so she brought the fruit to her mouth and took an ever small bite. Her face crumpled up as she said. “Oh good grief that’s awful.. pick as many as you can carry it tastes gross but it’s safe to eat and it is better than going hungry… but only just.”

Adam and Kerry-Ann shared there opinions about the fruit's smell and taste after the XO had tried it and they decided their name for the food would be dog fruit. The doctor continued to look around the area while Parsons picked several of the ripest looking dogfruit and placed them into his sack, careful not to bruise them. Though Adam wasn't sure the taste could be harmed, a mushy texture might make them even less bearable.
As the two wondered through the forest, they located some green leafy plants that the doctor thought were akin to spinach or something similar. They were slightly bitter, and not what Adam would choose to eat, but they were edible. The two officers also located a starchy plant that appeared promising. It reminded the XO of a cross between a plantain and a potato, only less appetizing.
Satisfied with their sack full of food, Commander Parsons and Doctor Kennedy, started to head back to camp after about an hour or two of foraging. Adam led the way this time with the large sack in tow over one shoulder. The doctor brought up the rear, still glancing around at the crew's temporary home and means of sustenance.
Once they reached the clearing, the two could make out the figures of Apriana and Daya back at the campsite. As they got closer, Parsons shouted, "Daya, Pai, did you two find anything useful?"

From the opening of the largest tent, Sonak watched Kennedy look after both Carvver and Zanak. Both officers had regained consciousness, and as a doctor, the Vulcan knew that either would want to get up soon, and before they would get too restless, she knew Kennedy would probably relent. "Let them up, if they request it," she suggested to the doctor, "a bit of fresh air, and perhaps even a brief walk might do them good."
Her own rash had nearly healed, and she hadn't given up on her daily swims. She could care less that the male portion of her senior staff saw her barely dressed. Even after giving birth to five children, she knew she still had a decent figure. She shrugged to herself as she walked out, and joined Parsons, Daya and Apirana outside the tent. "KerryAnne is with them," she reported to them as she seated herself on a large boulder.
The stone was hot to the touch, from being exposed to the near-constant sunlight. Dusk was setting in, and stars were starting to show. The Vulcan marveled at the sight. "I wonder how long until the Vesuvius comes back into range," she spoke, after a long silence. She regarded the three men before her. "I am anxious to get off this planet," she confessed quietly, "I am restless, and I miss my family. I do not mind missing the comforts of home, I actually do like a good camping trip. But at the moment we have to struggle to find edible food, and without tricorders it is very dangerous to simply sample what we find. Especially since some of us are not Human...or even better, because some of us are Human." She offered a wan smile. "As a Vulcan, I am often more resistant to alien poisons, and I am certainly more resistant to this heat, despite having been raised on Earth."
She paused, taking a few sips from the juice Adam had handed her earlier. "What are your thoughts on this place?" she asked her fellow officers, "is this hell, or is this paradise?"

Kerry-Anne paced the small tent in which both injured crewman lay, she turned as she heard the fabric rustle and wasn’t surprised to see Admiral Sonak walk through, giving the Admiral a polite. Kerry-Anne kneeled beside Maxil and placed her hand on his wrist, while she counted out seconds aloud, this way of taking observations while crude was the only way it could be done without a tricorder.
"Let them up, if they request it," she suggested to the doctor, "a bit of fresh air, and perhaps even a brief walk might do them good."
Kerry-Anne turned as she heard the Admiral speak, kerry looked down again before saying. “Another hour of rest before I would like to risk it.. to be honest there is no way to know if the symbiont Zanak is carrying suffered injuries.. his blood pressure suggests he is in a deep state sleep.. I am hoping the symbiont is taking care of itself as well as the host.”
She took a breath, “As for Carvver he can leave whenever he wakes.. though when he does and he faced with the food we found he might wish he was still asleep.”
Admiral Sonak left and kerry-Anne was left alone with the two sleeping officers, she sighed as she leaned against a tent pole and read an old fashioned paper book, occasionally lifting her head to check the two injured for signs of waking up or anything more seruise.
After an hour in the tent practically alone Kerry-Anne got restless and decided to leave, she stepped out of the tent and pointed someone else inside and said. “Call me if anything changes.”
Stepping out into the sunlight she took a deep breath as the warmth embraced her exposed skin, spotting the Admiral, First officer as well as Daya and Pai chatting away Kerry-Anne walked over and said.
“I don’t like the food situation, that fruit we found while barely edible is only just arguably better than starving to death and for those of us not inclined to eat meat there isn’t much other choice.. I was thinking that perhaps further towards the hills there may be some more bearable fruit.. while we got close to them looking for the shuttle I noticed the trees were taller and looked like they were more healthy for some reason.. perhaps there is something there that is more edible?.. and it is about time someone went out to kill some sort of animal for the meat inclined?”

The day had progressed rather lazily with nothing if real interest having happened, as for Kennedy she had spent the day caring for the injured crewmen or muttering to herself about the lack of creature comforts.
As the temperature began to drop, a fire was started in the middle of the ‘camp ground’ it seemed the temperature was hot during the day but suffered a severe drop during the late afternoon and night. This was nothing of concern however the wind that had began to pick up was, and with the wind came rather ominous looking dark clouds, the feel and the look carried with it the sense of an oncoming storm.
Standing up and now looking at the treetops, which were swaying more than he had seen them do before she walked over to Sonak and asked.
“Are our shelters designed to withstand this beating, especially if it gets worse?”
she looked up again at the sky which was getting darker because of the time and the heavy cloud coverage, she was at least thankful it wasn’t raining, but she would have felt better if the tricorders were working, that way they could know for sure how bad the storm would get, or if in fact it was going to get any worse. Right now all they had was speculation and guesses.
