Sonak had been sitting with Kennedy for a while, alternating between examining and cleaning the fruits and vegetables that they'd been able to scavenge, and trying to sleep or meditate. There was little else she could do, beyond going for another walk and see whatever else they might find that could be of interest. By now, most senior staff members were eager to return to the Vesuvius, but there was no way to contact them, for their combadges too were fried, and their remaining communications equipment was beyond repair as well.
They were marooned, until Vesuvius came back and transported them back aboard after finding absolute radiosilence for an unknown reason. The Vulcan looked up when Kennedy approached and addressed her.
“I don’t like the food situation, that fruit we found while barely edible is only just arguably better than starving to death and for those of us not inclined to eat meat there isn’t much other choice.. I was thinking that perhaps further towards the hills there may be some more bearable fruit.. while we got close to them looking for the shuttle I noticed the trees were taller and looked like they were more healthy for some reason.. perhaps there is something there that is more edible?.. and it is about time someone went out to kill some sort of animal for the meat inclined?”
Sonak nodded in agreement. "It is unfortunate that we did not take any additional staff beyond our complete senior staff," she admitted, "though I do approve of your sentiment. You and Parsons should investigate. I will stay here with Daya to watch over your patients. Unless you want to stay, in which case I shall go."
The day grew hot and soon there was little else for the crew to do but stay in the shade as much as possible and/or find refreshment in the calm waters of the lake. Of course, they had to be wary of the poisonous fish that had attacked the admiral a few days before, but so far there had been no further incidents.
Dreamily, the Vulcan gazed out over the water, keeping her gaze on the trees on the far shore, wondering what was out there and if they would be able to get there. She was pulled from her musings by Kennedy's voice for a second time that day. She followed the doctor's gaze to the dark gathering clouds above the nearby treetops, and she frowned in concern.
“Are our shelters designed to withstand this beating, especially if it gets worse?”
"They ought to be," the Vulcan replied carefully, "they did withstand the electrical storms that frequently rage, so wind and rain should not be an issue." The two women stared at the approaching clouds, gathering as much information as they could. Soon, they were pelted with hard rain drops that came whoosing at them at strong gusts of wind.
The strong wind pulled at the Vulcan's dress, whipping the fabric painfully about her bare legs. She had trouble keeping her long hair out of her face, and within seconds, she was thoroughly soaked. "Get inside!" she ordered, yanking Kennedy inside with her. She sat on the floor inside the tent, since it was sparse on furniture and listened as the rain beat down on the roof of their shelter, and the wind trying to tear it apart. "No choice now but to sit and wait," she commented dryly, as she started to wring the water from her soaked hair.

The force of which Admiral Reckus pulled her into the shelter gave Kennedy a rather shocking jolt, once inside the shelter both woman began to do their best to let the water that had soaked into their hair and clothes drip off.
Sonak said something about waiting out the storm, which made Kennedy’s heart drop slightly. She knew there was more than one reason she hated ‘camping’ and this was defiantly one of the bigger ones.
She glanced at Adam Parsons in the corner, before looking back to Sonak, knowing there was nothing to do but wait until the storm died down or the crew on the Vesuvius either noticed the storm or noticed the fact that the senior staff had neglected to check in since beaming down.
Kerry-Anne wasn’t used to storms like the one that was raging, growing up on Bajor a planet that didn’t suffer storms to the extent of the one outside. In truth Kerry-Anne was getting rather nervous. She fiddled with her hands in an effort to keep from shaking both from fear and the cold that was settling in.
Looking up at Reckus and Parsons she laughed nervously. “Stare death in the face multiple times and scared of a little rain, remind me never to take you two up on an offer to get away again.”
She stood up and moved to the left side of the shelter and said. “I am going to try and sleep.. if possible.. Please wake me if Carrver or Zanak wake up.”
Laying down she closed her eyes, knowing the futility of trying to sleep with the noise outside, but she lay there eyes closed anyway.. at least meditating if not sleeping. Her thoughts were filled with images of home. The sunset over the hills she could see from her bedroom window back on Bajor.. The tables full of food when her family gathered. Her thoughts then turned to more recent memories from arriving on the Vesuvuis during a mission involving clones.. to her rather quick flirtatious few days with Ambassador Tedak.
This camping trip aside she was enjoying her posting.

== Two weeks later ==
The senior staff of the USS Vesuvius was exhausted. Provisions were running low despite their best efforts to find something edible. Dangers were still high despite cautions taken. None ever walked off alone and never unarmed. By now, bows were fashioned from young tree branches, knives were made by using flints and of course slings were made from the hide of small animals that had been trapped.
Due to most plants being relatively poisonous to her, Sonak was forced to join in on the feasts of meat that the rest of the crew were having whenever a hunt had been successful. This had as a result that she felt relatively ill most of the day, as her system wasn't used to dealing with digesting animal food products. This didn't do her activity much good, but she was determined to contribute as much as was possible.
During the hottest part of the day, they resided in their common shelter or at the shallow ends of the lake. They still suffered the almost nightly electrical storms but it looked as though the hot season was coming to an end. Nights were getting colder, going almost below zero in temperature.
Having not accounted for cold nights, the crew resorted to huddling together to preserve body warmth. At first, it was slightly embarassing to everyone, but along the way it became cozy and general jokes were starting to be made. Surprisingly, the male portion of the group remained remarkably polite towards the only two women present and even considerate, though neither woman appeared to be shy. Personal stories were starting to be exchanged and eventually they started to get to know eachother a little better.
(if anyone has a story to share, now's the time!!!!!!)
== USS Vesuvius ==
Commander Mark Harper cursed under his breath as the agile Somma Class starship dodged around the firefight that had ensued after they'd been called away from Hope and had been forced to abandon the entire senior staff on the planet. Four weeks had passed since, and they weren't a step further in the negotiations. What was worse, their negotiations had backfired and now the ship was under attack.
Oddly enough, Starfleet wasn't answering any hails, since the electrical storms in the system were effectively jamming every and all attempts at communication. They were only fortunate that no system had been fried in the process.
"I'm tired of this," the acting captain scowled as he climbed back in his seat, after having been forcefully thrown from it. "Fire at will, all phaserbanks. They seem intent on destroying us, have the logs note that we're acting from self-preservation and in self defense. We've families and children to think about."
Before them, several of the smaller craft went up in flames, while another took flight. Hours later, surrender was signaled. "Fine then, let's see if they keep to it," Harper suggested under his breath.
From the medical station, Jatan Reckus watched with a look of disapproval on his face. Death was an unnecessary factor, no matter what the cause. Even an enemy deserved a chance at survival, and four ships had now been utterly destroyed. Vesuvius herself hadn't come from the battle unscathed; her port impulse engines were damaged and her shield generators were also severely damaged.
On top of that, one of the cloaking devices had gone offline and the dockingclamps between modues Discordia and Mercury could not be disengaged. Multi-vector assault mode was no longer an option.
"And all we want, is to retrieve our crew from the planet's surface," Mark concluded his discussion/negotiation with the enemy leader. Their species was yet uncharted and they refused to name themselves or even be noticed/bothered by others. "Once we do that, we will depart and mark this area of space as quarantined. Once you desire contact, you will be the ones to contact us."
Their leader nodded, chittering in a language the universal translater could barely keep up with. "You have one solar day," he chittered at high speed, "retrieve your people and be gone."
Negotiations finally successful, Mark Harper allowed himself to relax. "Find them, and beam them up," he ordered tersely, "or send a bloody shuttle, I don't care, so long as we have our senior staff back before our time is up!"

Sometimes Marandra just didn’t understand Starfleet. Having recently graduated from the Academy, she had been waiting and hoping for an assignment to a starship. She had not expected such an urgent notification in the middle of the night. She hadn’t expected to be rushed onto a shuttle and launched into space only a few hours after being woken up by said notification.
The trip was pleasant enough. Marandra managed to make friends with the pilot, after he got over his irritation of being called out of bed himself to deliver the Vesuvius’ newest CTSO. He even let her fly part of the way, when he learned that the Bolian woman had had some experience piloting small spacecraft. After a few uneventful days flying at top speed, Marandra laid her eyes upon the Vesuvius, her new home, for the first time.
Marandra Rixen had not expected to be loaded onto a starship in the middle of a firefight. Seeing the USS Vesuvius engaged in battle with several unidentified ships, the shuttle pilot withdrew to a safe distance, where they waited until the battle ended. They finally landed the shuttle in the shuttlebay and Marandra stepped out into the ship.
“What now?” she asked the pilot.
“I’m done here,” the pilot replied. “My assignment was to drop you off. As for you, I’d suggest finding the Admiral and reporting in.”
Marandra nodded and waved before leaving the shuttlebay behind. “Computer,” she said, “What is the location of Admiral Sonak Reckus?”
“Admiral Sonak Reckus is not aboard this starship.”
Marandra tried searching for other members of the senior staff, only to receive the same response. She shrugged. Maybe there was a malfunction due to the space battle. “Well, whoever’s in charge,” she thought, “They’ll be on the bridge.”
Several minutes later, Marandra stepped off of a turbolift and onto a bridge bursting with activity. “Ensign Marandra Rixen reporting for the duty of Tactical and Security Officer,” she announced, looking around to see if she could spot the Admiral. She couldn't. “Er, could someone tell me who’s in charge here?”

Mark Harper rose from the center seat. "I am," he replied cheerfully, as he approached the young woman. "Commander Mark Harper, acting commanding officer. You're a sight for sore eyes ensign, as I need a security officer right this minute. Our senior staff is on that planet below, and we can't get into contact with them. I want you to take a shuttle and locate them."
He looked sideways, meeting Jatan's gaze. "Go with her doctor."
Jatan nodded. "I'll get ensign Rixen equipped. The med-check can wait. I want to find my wife as soon as possible!" He turned to the newcomer. "Doctor Jatan Reckus," he introduced himself, "once chief medical officer, now...probably just a housefather and stand-by doctor."
He led the way back to the turbolift doors. "Come with me ensign. I'll show you the armoury. Commander Harper, which shuttle's prepped?"
"Take the Etna," Harper replied, "Stromboli's under repair, something with the impulse exhaust." He shrugged. "I'm no engineer, how should I know." He grinned. "Good luck ensign, doctor."
(marandra, can you take the shuttle down? feel free to create NPCs. anyone else...do please join in with an npc...let's wrap this end of the week)

The Admiral came out for her daily swim and reported that the Doctor had the two injured officers under her supervision. "I wonder how long until the Vesuvius comes back into range," she spoke, after a long silence. "I am anxious to get off this planet," she confessed quietly, "I am restless, and I miss my family. I do not mind missing the comforts of home, I actually do like a good camping trip. But at the moment we have to struggle to find edible food, and without tricorders it is very dangerous to simply sample what we find. Especially since some of us are not Human...or even better, because some of us are Human." She offered a smile. "As a Vulcan, I am often more resistant to alien poisons, and I am certainly more resistant to this heat, despite having been raised on Earth."
"No argument here, Admiral," Parsons chimed in, "at least the part about wanting to get off of this planet. I enjoy camping, but this is not what I had in mind."
Sonak paused, taking a few sips from the juice Adam had handed her earlier. "What are your thoughts on this place?" she asked her fellow officers, "is this hell, or is this paradise?"
Adam offered, "This planet is too hostile to our technology and physiology for an extended stay. I just hope the Vesuvius gets back soon and doesn't have any problem beaming us back. We've all seen what this planet does to shuttles."
A little while later, Dr. Kennedy walked out of the tent and over to the group,
Adam and Pai Daya took the Doctor's advice and spent most of the rest of the day hunting small game with spears. They took the animals back to the Doctor where they were examined and cleaned. Then they waited for the Doctor's report on their edibility before cooking the small mammals. The storm had come up quickly and Adam rushed into one of the larger shelters with the Doctor and Admiral. The three officers silently looked around at each other as the storm raged outside.
The Doctor looked up at Reckus and Parsons she laughed nervously. “Stare death in the face multiple times and scared of a little rain, remind me never to take you two up on an offer to get away again.”
Parsons responded with a smile, "We will all be fine, Doctor, just a little storm. Maybe we should do something to keep our minds off of the storm." Kerry-Anne stood up and moved to the left side of the shelter and said. “I am going to try and sleep.. if possible.. Please wake me if Carrver or Zanak wake up.”
The hunting parties and evening electrical storms went on for several days. Adam was not accustomed to a great deal of physical contact with his colleagues, so he was a little uncomfortable with the huddled mass of officers trying to stay warm at night, but he recognized that it was beneficial to their survival. Like most of the rest of the male officers, he could think of worse colleagues to be huddled with than the Admiral and Doctor. Both were attractive women and Parsons had noticed some tension due to this, however, he had not felt it a problem worthy of discussion with the Admiral yet.
One evening, just before dusk, the stranded officers observed another shooting star. They all feared it was another shuttle. After it entered the atmosphere they lost sight of it.

OCC: Sorry Admiral, we beamed down and the other shuttle attempting to land on the planet crashed, so I figured the transporter would be the logical choice, but I would be happy to change my post if you think a shuttle pickup is a better idea.

Alright, my first mission! Marandra thought. What she said was, “You got it, Commander! Doctor, lead the way.” She followed Doctor Reckus to the armory, where several security personnel were already waiting. Rixen looked over them quickly, and then nodded. “Alright, folks, I’m Marandra Rixen, your new Chief Security Officer. I promise I will learn all of your names later. In the mean time, if you’re all on duty, I’m gonna go ahead and bring you all down to the planet with me. We’re gonna find the senior staff and bring them back on board. Let’s pack… basic phasers for everyone, and some flares, flashlights, and… everyone should take an emergency field med kit. We don’t know what state our officers are going to be in. Best to be prepared.” Everyone hustled to follow her instructions, and she picked up her own supplies. “Alright, Doctor, if you could show me to the shuttle bay?”
Rixen, Doctor Reckus, and four assorted security officers proceeded through the hallways of the Vesuvius with haste. A pilot was waiting for them in the shuttle bay, and they had launched in a matter of minutes.
“Ensign Rixen, the planet is experiencing high levels of electrical storms,” the pilot commented.
“Well, I suppose that explains why we can’t contact our people. Can you… er… maneuver us down there? Safely, I mean?”
“I suppose I have to,” the pilot responded, grinning like a maniac.
“Wonderful. Please don’t crash. That would upset me quite a bit.” She clapped her hands together and leaned forward to address her security personnel. “Alright, crew, this is what’s gonna happen if—I mean, when we land. We’ll split up into teams of two. You two, and you two. Doctor, you’ll be with me. Pilot, you stay here. Cover as much area as possible as quickly as possible. Be thorough, but our people shouldn’t be too hard to miss. If you find them, send up a light flare, and the rest of us will gather at your position to assist our officers back to the shuttle. Got that?” The shuttle landed with a slight bump and the door opened. “Alright, let’s move!”
The three groups split up, all going in different directions. It appeared to be close to dusk at the time they landed on the planet, and it was growing darker with every passing minute. They made their way through the terrain, calling for their missing officers. After a while, the doctor stopped her, pointing off to one side. There were several structures nearby, obviously handmade. “Hello?” Marandra called, making her way towards the structures. “This is Ensign Rixen, from the Vesuvius—is anybody there? Admiral Reckus?”

Hearing her name being called, and actually sensing a wash of relief come over her, Sonak got to her feet and walked out of their shelter. "I am Sonak," she replied as a group of officers approached.
Someone, she couldn't really focus on who, dashed forward and nearly knocked her off her feet as she was embraced rather abruptly and forcefully. In reflex, she wrapped her arms around the person, then realised whom she was holding. "I missed you," she whispered, her voice breaking with raw emotion.
Jatan released her, then smiled back at Marandra. "We found them," he reported, as he stepped back. "Admiral Reckus, this is Ensign Marandra Rixen, your new chief of security."
The Vulcan offered a nod in response. "I do apologise for our bedraggled appearance," she replied, "we have experienced some...difficulties in the past few days. As you can see, we have very little equipment left to us, and have resorted to very primitive means for survival." She grimaced, while actually looking ill. "I have been consuming meat to survive as I seem to be sensitive to some of the flora here."
Jatan looked shocked, then turned to Rixen. "We need to get back to Vesuvius. Immediately! Take her ensign and take care of her, while I go find the rest." He left his wife in the care of the new security chief, then rushed into the shelter where he found Kennedy and Parsons, hovering over two ill officers. "How are they?" he asked Kennedy, before turning to Parsons. "A shuttle is waiting, I strongly suggest that you and Commanders Apirana and Daya get there as soon as possible. I'll help the doctor with her patients."
(everyone.....let's get back to the ship!)

“This is Ensign Rixen, from the Vesuvius—is anybody there? Admiral Reckus?” Parsons heard coming from the distance. He jumped to his feet and ran out of the shelter to find the Admiral greeting two federation personnel in clean uniforms. One was an officer, an ensign, in wearing departmental gold. The other was the familiar face of the Admiral's husband, Doctor Jatan Reckus.
The Ensign was introduced as Rixen, the new CTSO after a fitting embrace between Sonak and her husband. Adam interrupted the introductions, "I hope you two are the rescue party," he said half as a question.
<TAG Rixen>
Adam considered that an understatement.
"I'll go and help prepare the wounded," the XO said before heading back to one of the shelters.
Dr. Reckus came into the shelter housing the wounded a short time later.
"It will take more than you and Dr. Kennedy to carry the wounded. We will all move together. I will round up the others and we will carry the wounded out." Commander Parsons returned a short time later with the remaining stranded officers.
