"What have you got in mind, sir?"
"Not sure yet, Lt. But I do know that I wanna see what the base readouts are saying they are giving us." Dunowin replied.
They stepped onto the base into a crowd of people.
"Man. This place is busy." Dun muttered.
"So, where to, sir?"
"Well. I was only here a couple of hours before shipping out to meet the Nevada. I didn't have time to learn the layout. Suggestions, Lt?" he asked his companion.
"Base Operations? Their version of the engineering department?"
"That's as good of a place to start as any. Lead on."
They wound their way through the station to some lifts, where the Benzite led them aboard and up to BO. As they arrived, they were challenged by Dun could only describe as guards.
Why? he wondered to himself as he approached the doors.
"May I help you, sir?" one of the guards asked.
"Lt Commander Dunowin. Chief Engineer of the USS Nevada. I'm here to check on the repairs to my ship." he answered.
"Sorry, sir. They're running some sort of special diagnostics. We're under strict orders not to let anyone enter." said the guard.
"Orders from who exactly?" asked Dunowin.
"The orders just came to us via telecomm from the security office, sir."
"Very well. Let's go Hasak." Dunowin said, addressing the other Lt.
"Where to, sir?" he asked.
"Lead me to the security office."
They made their way to the office where a young Ensign was manning the desk.
"May I help you?" she asked as they entered.
Dunowin explained his mission to enter engineering and about the guards while she listened to every word. When he was done, she checked the security logs. After a moment, she looked back up at the two officers and spoke once again.
"I'm sorry, sirs. But there isn't anything listed here requiring guards at Engineering." she informed them.
Despite the face that showed his impatience, Dun turned and marched back out of the office and headed back toward the lifts. Hasak had to run to catch up.
"Back to BO, sir?" he asked when he fell into step with the CEO.
"No. Back to the ship. We'll get to the bottom of this ourselves."
As they exited the docking vestibule, they heard the alarm blaring.
"INTRUDER ALERT. INTRUDER ALERT."
"Now what?" Dun muttered as they began running back to Engineering.

Impassive, Hasak followed the chief engineer back to the ship. The scarlet-edged alarm of the claxon was a surprise, and a non too welcome one in this confusing time. It annoyed the Benzite, to have something else which absolutely required attention when he and the CEO were already trying to solve one problem.
But then maybe this was related, indeed it was likely that it all tied together. Intruders...
He followed Dunowin to engineering, the two gold-collared officers entering to find the large place much the same as how they'd left it. Dunowin made his staff calm down, telling them to stop running around trying to find the source of the problem so quickly, for in finding that things were amiss on the Starbase, it revealed to them that it indeed wasn't a problem with their own instruments...
While the engineer was doing this, Hasak took to him one of the consoles situated around the pulsating warp core. He accessed the panel, hoping to come up with some sort of contingency plan which would give them the extra required power should they need to get away.
As for the other side of the problem; the intruders on the ship, the Benzite could only try and figure out what was going on, rather than take action. He looked across to Dunowin, seeing the man still busy with his staff, and decided he'd take it upon himself.
He pressed the reply button on the intercom, "Engineering to the Bridge, Lieutenant Hasak speaking... We have intruders?"
"Affirmative, engineering," a rushed voice replied on the console's intercom, "Four Starfleet officers; the command officers have them cut off at a junction; they're trying to get to the bridge and have taken out six crewmen already. Just sit tight down there," the urgent voice said, "We'll deal with it."
"Roger that," Hasak said, tentatively closing the channel. He wasn't at all reassured.
And with good reason, he thought, his eyes turning to the receding doors of engineering and suddenly alight with fire, belying the cold complexion of his blue face. Through the door, as he thought emerged two men armed to the teeth, and each wearing the black uniform of a Starfleet Intel operative.
Looking across panickly to Dunowin, Hasak braced himself for enemy fire, "Take cover!!" He hollered.
Twin lances of phaser rifle fire flashed across engineering, striking two engineers square in the chest. The black uniforms advanced, the men keeping to the walls, and systematically discharging their weapons at the nearest engineers. Everyone started backing up to the upper level or boxing themselves in the side-sections of the lower level, some trying to get to the emergency weapons lockers stored near the back of the room.
Gold-collared officers fell all around as Hasak took cover behind the warp core. They'd have to be mad to fire near the thing, but he was still apprehensive as he ducked behind it, using it as intimate cover. No security would be on their way, he thought, as he saw one of the emotionless operatives take out the comm console. How had the bridge got this wrong? He screwed his face up, thinking hard... Two of the four intruders must've split off. He sighed as sparks flew past; it looked like engineering was on its own.
Looking around for Dunowin, he saw the man on the top level. The engineer met his eyes, staring down at him, and an understanding passed between the two of them. If Hasak spoke, the intruders would know his location. It worked both ways; if the Benzite could get hold of a weapon, he could catch the two of them unawares, and take them down.

Seth grimaced, looked across the length of the corridor at the one downed operative - one of the two that had tried to flank them - and then across at the perpendicular stretch of passageway to the other two, slumped against the walls in the deep sleep induced by heavy stun.
The Wezean was on the floor, having been shot through the leg by a phaser rifle on what must've been full power. Park and Runningwolf had both gone off in pursuit of the one officer - their Commander as they believed - who was on the way to the bridge. Hopefully Seth's CO and XO would catch up to him before he got to the bridge.
<tag Runningwolf and Park>
As for the other two, the ones who had not attempted to flank, they had disappeared. None of them knew where'd they'd gone, although it had been Seth's duty to track them down. That was before one of them had taken him down, before they had both disappeared like the non-existent poltergeist. He strained to stand, wanting to give chase, but it was no use. He paused, looking down the corridor where they must've gone, and shook his head. Then, with tremendous effort and not without a considerable amount of pain, he managed to drag himself to a nearby wall-panel. With all his strength - being sapped away from him like the siphon of some demon - he stretched for the intership transmit button. "Starbase, this is Seth Helacaan, I'm on the Starship Nevada. I'd like to return to the 'Base to conclude my court martial." His voice was clearly strained.
A female voice responded tentatively. "... Very well, sir, I'm passing on your coordinates to the transporter operators... Sir, are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Seth said, wincing with pain. "Beam me over."
Seconds later he dissolved in a column of light.

Dunowin was up on the top deck when the intruders entered and began firing at everyone they could see. As he watched his people hit the ground all around the room, he could only hope that the phasers were on stun but something told him that it was a worthless hope.
As he was looking around for some way to reach the weapons locker he spotted Hasak down below. The intruders had not yet spotted him. Realizing that Hasak had a better chance at reaching the locker, Dunowin stood and began running across the upper decks catwalk, making himself a target. the two assailants began firing at him as they advanced toward the stairs that would lead them up to his level. One of them hit a console just as Dunowin was diving behind it, sending sparks flying up into his face and eyes. Dun screamed out in pain as he realized that his sight was no longer with him in his right eye. He quickly used the sleeve of his uniform to wipe at his face as he could now hear the footsteps on the stairs heading his way.
Okay, Hasak. Make your move.he silently thought.

NPC Lieutenant Jr. Grade Hasak - Asst. Chief of Ops
The bravery of the CEO in distracting the attention of their attackers was the most admirable thing Hasak had seen in a long time. He watched as Dunowin dived behind a station, and saw the phaser beams strike the console's matte surface. Hopefully, the chief had not been too badly hurt in the incident.
Hasak had already made his move, sneaking his way to a weapons' locker. At the foot of the locker lay an incapacitated engineer, taken down just before he could reach for a phaser. Hasak didn't hesitate and grabbed a handheld type II. Instinctively he took cover behind the closest console, just in time to see the black-suited operatives take the lift to the upper level.
Engineering had been fled, and the only people remaining were those who'd been killed or hopefully just knocked out, himself, Dunowin, and their two attackers. The Benzite stepped around on the lower level, aiming his phaser upwards, trying to find a position for a clear shot. It was difficult with the intervening ceilings and all the glass jutting out in various places, but, after crouching, he soon found a suitable position - conveniently located next to a covering console.
Just as the operatives were approaching Dunowin's location behind the burnt-out, smoking console, consecutive phaser beams lashed out at the two of them. They went down fast, eyes rolling up under the effect of heavy stun. Very satisfied with his marksmanship, Hasak made his way as fast as he could to the upper level.
The console Dunowin was propped against reeked of burnt-out componentry; Hasak was shocked to find the engineer's right eye area was badly damaged.
He knelt beside him, "Sir, let's get you to sickbay." He helped Dunowin to his feet and then tapped his commbadge, still wheezing with exertion as he spoke, "Bridge, this is Hasak. We've incapacitated two of them in engineering. I recommend you beam them both straight to the brig."

With one look at the unconscious forms of the operatives, Hasak and Dunowin limped together out of engineering.

Dun sat propped up against what felt like the remains of a console. The blast from the intruders phaser had caused the console to explode, sending sparks and debris into his face. He now sat totally blind and could feel the burns on his face.
As he concentrated on ignoring the pain, he heard the lift began to rise to the level he was on. He began to silently pray that he had given Hasak the time he had needed. He caught his breath as he heard the lift come to a halt. A second later, he heard two phaser shots and two thumps.
I sure do hope that was the intruders. he thought.
A moment later, he felt a hand grab his arm and he quickly began to fight since he wasn't sure who it was.
"Sir, let's get you to sickbay."
"Hasak." Dunowin said with a sigh of relief. "The intruders?" he asked.
"They've been dispatched and the bridge has been informed sir." the young Lt replied as he lifted Dunowin to his feet.
Dun leaned himself against the Benzite and let him lead him to sickbay.
"We need some help over here." Dunowin heard Hasak say as they entered.
<Tag Dr Grey. My face is badly burnt and I am completely blind at the moment.>

At Starfleet Operations Headquarters, San Francisco, Earth, Fleet Admiral Tobias Vhaki entered his office. He was the Chief of the entire of Starfleet Operations. Nothing within the borders of the Federation, none of the activities and operations that the organisation of Starfleet conducted were not under his purview. He thought he knew everything, and yet... there was this one thing, recently unearthed, he had no clue about.
It wasn't classified; or at least, it wasn't meant to be classified. And there were no direct links in the hierarchical chain that gave any clue as to who was in charge, and who was linked to who. From the few who had been captured by Starfleet Security, it was impossible to learn anything of who they reported to, and thus all they had were non-consecutive broken links - broken links of a very long chain.
Starfleet Intel were tightlipped, issuing only the briefest of responses indicating they knew nothing of what had been asked. But that didn't mean anything; Intel said very little on all they were quizzed about, whether they should've had knowledge of it or not. And it was the 'not' that Vhaki was worried about...
He sat at his desk, pulling his monitor screen towards him as he leant back in the plush comfortable chair. He started keying in a sequence of characters, preparing to contact a particular Starfleet ship captain (or Colonel; it being the CO's preferred title, as Vhaki understood). This 'thing', this unknown thing which Intel knew little about, had reached into places far and wide, and had affected - in a vast variety of different ways - the most unlikely of people.
Having patiently waited for the subspace communication link to establish, Vhaki straightened his sitting posture and put his business face on. Eventually, Colonel Runningwolf of the USS Nevada appeared on the screen, the surroundings clearly indicating the Colonel was in his ready room. He looked a little worse for wear...
"Colonel, I'm glad to see you've responded so quickly. I feared, given what's happening out there, that you might be tied up with..."
<tag Runningwolf>
"I'm saddened to hear what has come to pass on your ship, Colonel. To ever have to be discussing the attack of Starfleet officers by Starfleet officers..." Vhaki huffed, "It's something we should never have to do. And your officer's court martial, well... I'm sorry, Colonel."
<tag Runningwolf>
With a look of determination, Vhaki promised nearly through gritted teeth, "My people will get to the bottom of this for you, Wolf. We have several people captured; we'll root this out. Intel's been quiet as usual, but I have a suspicion; it all fits so nicely with the kind of covert op. they like to pull."
More like a project than an operation, Vhaki thought. "As for you, Colonel, I suggest you keep an eye on what your Helacaan is doing; who he might be conversing with and being influenced by, and who again might be trying to prey on him. It's clear that whoever's behind all this has a plan for this man, whether that's to do with his place of birth, or something else..." He shook his head, "As I say, we'll root this out. Godspeed, Colonel."

OOC: My last mission post. Can't wait for the next one to be honest! It will be good to get the Nevada back out amongst the stars...
