As the USS El Salvador slid into warp, Vreenak took the time to look around his new bridge. It was much the same as his previous command, with them both being Prometheus class, but there were subtle differences. This ship seemed a bit more worn, which made sense, as he had got this ship second hand, and it had been in service for a while now. There was evidence of personalisation and patched repairs in a few places. He would have to personalise his ready room sometime, but for the moment it was empty of belongings, simply servng as a room for him to spill over into. He was so engrossed in his thoughts, that when the engineering officer spoke, he had to ask him to repeat it.
"Captain, we are encountering some minor problems with the Bussard collectors, probably due to the large amount of debris here. I recommend that we reduce to Warp 4 until we can get them fixed."
"Of course Lieutenant." He turned to the CNO, who cut in just before Vreenak had a chance to give the order.
"Reduced to Warp 4, heading constant. Aye sir."
Vreenak chuckled slightly, and nodded in acknowledgement. "Well, everything seems calm. You have the bridge Mr Smith. I'll be in my ready room." With that, Vreenak did indeed walk through into his ready room, where he had a large chest laying on the floor. After about an hour, he had managed to personalise his ready room somewhat. As he placed a model of the first El Salvador into a display case, the ship shook slightly.
=/\= Cmdr Smith? =/\=
=/\= "We're having some further problems with the Bussard collectors. Kivan informs me he'll have them fixed soon." =/\=

=/\= Don't worry they should be repaired soon =/\= Kivan informed Commander Smith.
=/\= Good, Lieutenant =/\=
Kivan set about trying to fix the suprisingly problematic Bussard collectors. For some weird reason, they had come online and now they were slowing down the ship, because the warp core automatically loses some power when the collectors come online. Kivan, because he wasn't quite sure how they had come online, was having problems stopping them working. He guessed that it was due to the large amount of debris but how could that affect the Bussard collectors? Maybe some had entered it? They were only meant to come online when standard fuel had run out. Not when they had plenty of fuel left. And anyway, they are put on manually not automatically. He yawned in tiredness, and attempted to take them offline manually without doing the usual procedere, which had been tried and had failed. He sighed in annoyance noticing that he needed clearance to access the programs in which to bring them offline.
=/\= Kivan to Commander Smith, clearance is required to bring the Bussard collectors offline. =/\=

=/\= Ok, I will get on it. Give me a moment. =/\=
Steven checked his data terminal, and indeed, the Bussard collectors were online. He tapped a few controls, and input his authorisation code.
=/\= Smith to Kivan. There, try that. =/\=

Vreenak, having now sorted out his Ready Room was reading through the mission report he was getting live from the Victory. Unfortunately, it shed little more light on the matter. The Victory had lost contact with the away team, and had no way to tell what was happening on the planet. Vreenak studied his own mission briefing once more. They were following the warp trail of the Federation Scout Ship, but the trail was apparantly getting fainter, suggesting one of two things. Either the scout had been travelling faster than the Warp 6 they were now following it at, or...
Vreenak left his ready room, and looked straight at the CNO.
"Mr Agalacticae, is it possible that the Warp Trail we are following was not in fact leaving the planet, but rather heading towards it? Would that explain the rate at which it is fading?"
The human helmsmen pondered the question for a few seconds, and then tapped his commbadge.
=/\= Kivan, can you give me a time on the warp trail ahead of us and behind us? =/\=
=/\= Hmmm...sure I could. Two ticks... over the comm system, Vreenak heard the Chief Engineer yelling out instructions to his staff, and then tapping his console frantically ...Okay then, the trail behind us is ... no that can't be right!? The trail behind us is newer than the trail in front of us, but that would mean that... =/\=
=/\= Thank you Lieutenant. =/\=
The helmsman turned to Vreenak, "Appears you're right Captain. Should we turn around?"
"Yeah, better do. What a waste of... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!" Vreenak pointed at something small on the viewscreen. "Give me maximum magnification on it!"
The screen cut out, and then came back in a large blur, focusing slowly in on it.
"Oh, that is not good."
"Nope, it isn't. All hands, Red Alert!" Vreenak looked up at the Borg Sphere on the forward viewscreen in dread.

Savot had just finished unpacking his things and organizing his quarters the way they had been during his first tour on the El-Salvador when he heard the Red Alert claxons sound. Reattaching his commbadge to his chest, he went out into the corridor, coded his door, and dashed for the nearest turbolift to the bridge.
***********************************
The turboshaft doors opened to a flurry of activity, showing a cohesiveness that was already starting to adjust to the new Captain. Captain Vreenak turned upon hearing the doors and nodded in approval.
"Mr. Savot, good. Assume the ops station. We've got a Borg sphere on scanners. Give me a status readout on all departments. Mark the response times down, I'll want to go over them later.", Captain Vreenak ordered in a no-nonsense manner.
"Aye sir.", Lt. Commander Savot relieved the female ensign previously occupying the Operations console. "Reports indicate status is green all across the board. Recording times and transferring to your ready room computer."
"Good, scan the sphere. I want to know why they haven't acted yet.", ordered the Captain as Savot worked the console in compliance.
"Odd... Captain, the sphere indicates no major power being devoted to any system. However, there appears to be no damage conceivably responsible for their inactivity." Savot continued to scan, hoping to find more while letting the Captain digest the new information.
Just as the Romulan captain opened his mouth to respond, "Sir, the Borg are attempting deception, 'playing dead' so to speak, in order to buy time for the tightbeam communication signal to flow towards more of their ships. The signal is being sent on a system so small that it will take a vast amount of time to reach its target, the advantage being that it is undetectable by basic scan, or even constant monitoring of general communications channels. I would recommend destroying this vessel, though their message has no doubt been sent in completion by now."

=/\= Yes Sir! =/\= was the reply Commander Smith got from the Xenexian
Now he had clearance for the Bussard collectors, he thought that it would be easy to take them offline. But when he realising that someone had tampered with them, making it difficult to cut the power going to them he sighed in annoyance. He thought that he should inform Captain Vreenak or Commander Smith, because there might be an intruder on the ship. He decided to inform Commander Smith, as Captain Vreenak may not want to be bothered at the moment.
=/\= Kivan to Commander Smith, there may be an intruder on the ship, either that or someone's been tampering with the Bussard collector's controls. I suggest that you check for intruders. Meanwhile, i'll try to see if anyones been tampering with them. =/\=

Just after they had discovered that they were following the warp trail in the wrong direction and the Borg sphere appeared on the screen Commander Agalacticae could feel the tension on the bridge rising with every second passing, all eyes fixed on the sphere on the viewscreen.
Captain Vreenak was the first to regain composition, asking for a status report of all departments from Lt. Commander Savot who now occupied the Ops console. When Savot reported that the borg sphere was undamaged indicating no reason for their inactivity Agalacticae felt even more afraid of the Borg…
“Like a ghost ship, waiting to awakened” he thought to himself and the uneasiness he felt when he was informed about the current mission involving the Borg. Especially as most of the crew only had arrived with the USS Iron Duke some time ago and were not used to working together. As far as he could see Vreenak appeared to be a capable CO and everyone was eager to make the best of the situation. For Commander Agalacticae himself it was his third assignment after his graduation almost 6 months ago. After a mission on the Hepta, followed by his assignment to the Optimus he now was finally assigned to the El Salvador – hopefully for quite a while.
Lt. Commander Savot’s announcement of the communication signal sent by the borg vessel worried Commander Agalacticae even more and commented on Lt. Commander Savot’s suggestion of destroying the vessel.
Agalacticae: “Captain, if we are to destroy the sphere we better succeed in the first attempt before they are able to adjust to our weapons. If possible we should try to direct our attack in a way that we might be able to recover the communication system relaying the message in order to decipher it”
Vreenak seemed to think about the suggestion for a while and without deciding on what to do he ordered
Vreenak: “Commander Agalacticae – take us closer, slow and smooth – we do not want to alert the Borg at the time being”
Agalacticae: “Aye sir”
Commander Agalacticae fingers went over the CONN, like fingers playing a piano when the El Salvador approached the Borg sphere at quarter impulse. The huge Prometheus-Class starship moved smoothly closer following Agalacticae’s fingertips every move. He couldn’t be happier, sitting at the Helm of this powerful starship except of the Borg presence of course. Agalacticae’s eyes started to hurt as he was afraid of blinking while the Borg sphere grew on the viewscreen.

Savot scanned the sphere once more as Commander Agalacticae began to manuever them closer.
"Commander, with their power lowered so drastically to avoid detection, their sensors are functioning far beneath standards. I have located a series of sensor pockets, where the Borg will be unable to detect us. I have also trailed the comm signal to its transmitting device, and have calculated the best position for attack in order to avoid damaging the unit." The vulcan informed his superior as he transferred the information to the Commander's console.
Commander Agalacticae smiled as he received the data. "I should have no problem plotting a course to match these data, Captain."
A grin formed on the Romulan captain's face as at least 2 of his officers had begun to work cohesively. The fact that they'd remain hidden from the Borg until it was too late for them to do anything about it didn't hurt his mood either. He settled into his command chair, feeling more comfortable than it had up to now.

Vreenak was pleased at the progress that was being made, and was quite confident that in working together, his COO and CNO had covered all the options. Deciding that it was about time to destroy the sphere, he ordered the ship closer. "Savot, with their power so low, is it also possible that they have weak points in their shielding?" "That is possible sir. Scanning... Affirmative. There is a small area at these coordinates."On the armrest of the Captains Chair, a set of coordinates came up, and were also sent to the Tactical Station. "As long as these will keep the communications system undamaged." "The odds of any damage to the comm system is one million, two hundred and fift...""Thank you Mr Savot. Tactical, target those coordinates with everything we've got. I don't want them to get any ideas about attacking us. One shot, one kill please." [glow=red,2,300] OOC: I'll leave the fight scene to one of you guys...i got limited time at the moment, as I have coursework due in at college... [/glow]

As soon as Commander Agalacticae received the data from Lt. Commander Savot his anxiety was subsided by excitement and concentration. But what was even more important was the professionalism with which the Ops Officer analyzed the situation and instinctively relayed the relevant information to him, giving them a chance to join their efforts in solving the problem. The idea of sneaking up to the sphere and to disable it with a surgically precise “cut” felt most intriguing as it both meant the destruction of his uneasiness for the moment as well as an opportunity to see the El Salvador in action…
When Captain Vreenak ordered the destruction of the sphere and the coordinates appeared on the CONN, Agalacticae decided to bring the team-work of Savot and himself to a test.
Agalacticae: “Well, Commander Savot, let’s show them what the El Sal is capable of. I’ll bring us as close as possible, giving you the best position for a precise attack”
The only reply Agalacticae received from Savot was a nod, which was more than enough for him to engage to full impulse and let the El Salvador accelerate to follow the corridor of sensor pockets that would leave them undetected. Closing in on the Borg sphere the El Salvador took a few sharp turns and a final dive until Agalacticae directed the starship to make a half loop to finally face the Borg Sphere full frontal. Agalacticae could only imaging how it must have looked from the outside - like a snake winding up on its bait ready to devour it. With the glittering warp nacelles on the back and the weapon systems fully powered he simply uttered the words while the El Salvador shot towards the sphere.
Agalacticae: “Now, Savot, now!”

"Now Savot, Now!", came the voice of Commander Agalacticae, at the same instant the vulcan's fingers danced over the firing controls. The Commander's impressive control of the massive starship had brought the weapons to bear at the exact moment Savot had calculated.
"Firing weapons.", came the calm reply, one torpedo lept from the El-Salvador's launcher, pounding through most of the sphere's outer hull. Immediately following were the phaser blasts, surgically slicing away at the borg vessel in order to spare the comm unit. The sphere began to convulse, inner and outer explosion's rocking the small ship until one final explosion blew the vessel apart, showering space with chunks of debris.
Commander Agalacticae quickly plotted a course to weave the ship through the debris, trusting his view through the main screen until he noticed on his panel that the vulcan Ops officer had logged a scan of each piece of debris, and transmitted the course upon which each piece had been sent by the destruction. The Commander grinned with sincere enjoyment as he piloted the vessel through the debris with fluid twists and turns, dodging the last piece with a barrel rolling loop.
Captain Vreenak grinned at the display. The intricate manuevering was hardly necessary, the shields could have deflected even the largest of the debris. But he had the feeling that the Navigator, and even the vulcan, had coordinated that move purely for the fun of it. Just to see if they could. It was good to know he had that kind of skill at his disposal if it ever became truly necessary.
"All right gentlemen, that was quite the spectacle. Now, can you two handle something as mundane as tractoring in that comm unit?", Vreenak grinned as even Savot managed a sheepish look for an instant before regaining his emotional control. He tapped his commbadge, ==^== Mr. Kivan, we're bringing in a borg communication device. I want you to take first crack at getting inside it and decrypting the message it sent. If you require any assistance, ask whoever you deem appropriate. ==^== The captain beeped off after getting the affirmative from his chief engineer.
"Commander Agalacticae, you have the conn. I'll be in my ready room. Contact me when you have anything on the comm unit.", the navigator nodded an 'Aye, sir' as the Romulan captain left the bridge, glad the immediate threat with the borg was over. But what was still to come...

Kivan had never actually seen anything which was borg, other than a couple of pieces of a borg ship which he had been shown at Starfleet Academy. He knew that borg systems were incredibly complex, so it would be difficult to decipher this communications device he was getting from the destroyed borg sphere. =/\= Savot to Kivan, we are about to transport the device into engineering. Are you ready for it? =/\= =/\= Yes, Commander =/\= Kivan replied, a little nervously. He watched it as it materialised into engineering, and as he went towards it he gave out a startled shout as it said "We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.""You what?" Kivan cried out in reply. But after studying some of it, he realised that this was an automated response which the borg had programmed into it to frighten people. The device was large, cube shaped and very well... strange. There didn't seem to be any kind of external connection points, which confused Kivan to no end, because there also wasn't any kind of switch to open up any connection points. =/\= Kivan to Commander Savot, I need some assistance down here =/\=

Leaving the bridge to the command of Commander Agalcaticae, due to Steven Smith having to go to sickbay for a routine medical, Vreenak retired back into his Ready Room. He was more than happy with how well the crew was working together, and especially pleased at the way that his Navigation officer and Operations officer co-ordinated.
"Computer, start recording Captain's Log."
"Affirmative" The smooth and calm female voice replied to him with no hesistation.
"Captain's Log, Stardate 891024.5.
After tracing the scoutship's warp trail for three days, we discovered that the ship had been heading towards the planet and not, as we had assumed, away from it. Before we got a chance to reverse course and head back, we detected a Borg Sphere. We soon deduced that the Sphere was communicating with the rest of the Borg, and that destroying it was the only course of action available to us. The bridge crew pulled together brilliantly, and the sphere was destroyed with only minimal damage to the communications system, which has now been recovered, and is been examined by Lieutenant [jg] Kivan. Until we know what the Borg were saying, we will hold our current position. End log."
The recording stopped, and Vreenak read through it quickly to verify it was correct. Just as he was about to record a personal log, his commbadge chirped. He tapped it gently.
=/\= Yes? =/\=
=/\= Admiral Lin is trying to contact you Captain. =/\=
=/\= Thank you Commander, put it through to my ready room. =/\=
He flipped the small screen up, to reveal a federation crest. Tapping in his command code, the screen changed to show the Trill Vice Admiral.
"Admiral Lin, you will forgive me for not replying earlier, we had a slight incident with the Borg."
"Oh?"
"Long story. The scoutship was going to the planet, not from it, and we ran into a Borg Sphere. It is now an ex-Borg Sphere, though we managed to retrieve the communication systems, which are now being looked at by my Chief Engineer. I was waiting here until such a time as we deciphered the message, unless you have any further orders?"

=/\= Very well, Mr. Kivan. I will be there presently. =/\=, Savot beeped off his commbadge after hearing the Engineer's request for assistance and spun his chair around to face Commander Agalacticae, currently in charge of the bridge.
"Permission to leave the bridge to assist Lt. Kivan, Commander?" Savot requested.
"Certainly Mr. Savot, I think we can spare you for the time being. Good luck with the comm unit. Hope it has something useful to tell us.", the navigator said as Savot brought up the duty list on his console, and summoned the topmost name to assume his post while he went below.
"Luck, sir?", the vulcan digested the concept for a moment, then giving a sort of facial shrug, stood from his station, nodded to the commander and headed for the turbolift.
********************************
The Xenexian engineer paused his analysis when he saw Lt. Commander Savot enter engineering. "Hello, Commander, thanks for coming. Here's what I've got so far." The Lt. said with a nervous tinge in his voice. He knew as well as anyone else how thorough vulcans were, and was a little worried that the Operations officer would find fault with his work to date.
Savot took the padd that the engineer handed him, observed the work, and nodded firmly. "Excellent Mr. Kivan, given your experience and the equipment at your disposal you made the best possible analysis of the device. Quite thorough.", he handed the padd back to the much-relieved Lt. Kivan. "Hmm, the lack of connection orafices is indeed curious. It seems the borg designed the device to sever all hardline connections in the event of severe ship damage, and continue to function as a stand-alone unit."
"That was my assumption as well sir. But how will we access the signal without connection points?", disappointed and frustration flowed in the Lieutenant's voice.
"Consider the facts one at a time Mr. Kivan. We have no specifically designed access to the unit, yet the unit continues to function on its own. What would this suggest?", Savot asked calmly, trying to guide Kivan to find the answer himself.
"Well it has to have internal wiring and circuitry, its own powersource, and a processing unit to both write and encrypt the signal.", Kivan said, the look on his face obvious evidence that his mind was working towards the solution. "And... if there is such a processing unit, we could splice into it manually! Rig a connection directly into the device between it and the ship's computer!" The Engineer smiled widely, filled with excitement, his earlier anxiety gone. No more worries about dealing with borg technology, this was just one more construct of wire and programming. This was what he was born to master.
Savot nodded assuringly at the young Xenexian. "And once connected to the ship's computer, the decryption program should be able to make significant headway with whatever message the borg were transmitting. After we acheive the tap, I will section off several banks of the computer for our decryption task. I doubt the device could attempt to seize control of our systems, but.... I believe the phrase is, 'better safe than sorry?' ", he said as he worked to assist Kivan in splicing into the processor.
Lt. Kivan smiled, "That's the very one sir, and I agree wholeheartedly." They went to work on the unit, every moment brought them closer to discovering the message.

oO What a feast! Oo Commander Agalacticae thought to himself with his heart jumping of joy due to the epinephrine in his blood, when the Borg Sphere vanished in magnificent fireworks. After the recovery of the Borg Communication device Captain Vreenak decided to leave the bridge, pleased with the way the ship and his crew had handled the situation.
Vreenak: “Commander Agalacticae, you have the bridge”
Agalacticae: “Aye, sir”
Agalacticae replied surprised and hastily. Had the Captain just left the bridge to him? It took quite a while until he realized that XO Smith was in sickbay and therefore someone else had to be in charge while the Captain was not present. Lots of thoughts flashed through the navigator’s mind: His previous assignments and the destruction of the Borg Sphere a few minutes ago. He had never been in charge of a starship, not even for a second, and was not sure whether he was ready for it. He had always dreamed about it of course. And the way Captain Vreenak addressed him – calm and determined without doubt in his voice that he could trust his ship to the hands of his navigator, although they only recently started working together amazed him. A flashback to his academy days and a conversation with Admiral McCormick popped into Agalacticae’s mind. “You have to act on the opportunities you are offered and take up the challenge it brings with it, Cadet. Otherwise you deny yourself to find out what you are capable of. And trust me - no senior officer would give you an assignment, if they did not think you would be able to handle it” With this thought in his mind Agalacticae looked around the bridge wondering how many seconds had passed, only to find out that the doors to the Captain’s ready room were just closing and no one had even noticed the dispute that went on in his mind.
Agalacticae: “Ensign, take over the CONN!”
Commander Agalacticae ordered a young navigation ensign, when he got up and walked up the few steps to the center of the bridge, trying to adjust to his new role and appearing more confident than he actually was.
Savot: "Permission to leave the bridge to assist Lt. Kivan, Commander?" A smile appeared on Agalacticae’s face at the request of Lt. Commander Savot, which the Ops Officer could not possibly avoid noticing. If the vulcan would smile, he would have done so now.
Agalacticae: “Permission granted! And keep me updated of your progress”
Savot: “Aye sir”
Savot left the bridge and with mostly junior officers around Agalacticae could not fight the temptation of taking a seat in the Captain’s chair. Walking slowly to the center of the bridge and taking a seat at the heart of the bridge he noticed that the chair appeared somewhat estranged and huge to him.
But thinking back to the conversation of his academy days he was confident that in time he would grow to fit it perfectly…

Only minutes after Commander Agalacticae had sat down in the Captain’s chair the doors to the ready room swooshed open and Vreenak entered the bridge. Surprised by the Captain’s sudden return Agalacticae almost jumped out of the chair, seemingly standing at attention for Vreenak.
Vreenak: “At ease, Commander!”
Vreenak said ironically, obviously aware of the fact that he had taken his CNO by surprise.
Agalacticae: “The bridge is all yours, Captain”
Vreenak: “Please resume your position Commander and set course for the USS Victory”
Somewhat amazed by the sudden change of orders Agalacticae looked at Vreenak, when he sat down at the CONN.
Vreenak: “Orders from Admiral Lin”
Vreenak added, as if speaking to himself.
Somehow the chair at the CONN seemed more comfortable, at least to him and as soon as he had plotted a rendezvous course with the Victory, he reported to Vreenak.
Agalacticae: “We are all set, Captain”
Vreenak: “Engage at maximum warp”
The four warp coils of the El Salvador began to shine in a shimmering blue light and with an illuminating flash the starship went to warp heading for the USS Victory and the senior staff meeting.
OFF: I took the liberty to post our return to the planet’s orbit as ordered in Magellan’s post from October 26th (IN ORBIT- Thread)

Kivan was really excited now, because the prospect of uncoding a borg communications device was so... well... amazing, that he could not hide his excitement. As a big grin spread over Kivan's face, Savot couldn't help but ask him why he was grinning so wildly.
"Sorry sir but I'm so excited just at the thought of uncoding this device. It's the first time I've ever worked on a borg device before. It's fascinating how they can build such things..." Kivan trailed off realising that he was talking too much.
"I'm sorry, but I do not see what is so 'fascinating' about decoding a communications device." Savot replied without stopping his work to even look up at Kivan.
"Yeah, but you wouldn't would you...?" Kivan muttered almost sarcastically.
"Pardon?" Savot asked the 24 year-old Xenexian.
"Oh... nothing..." he replied, glad he hadn't heard what he said.
Once they had finished splicing the device, Savot sectioned off a couple of the computer's banks, to make sure the device didn't attempt to seize control of the systems. They joined the device to the computer, then started to transmit the information from the communications unit to the computer. Once this was done, they used the universal translator to translate it into english (obviously). After this simple procedure was done, Kivan brought up the message on the screen in front of himself and Savot. They started reading the message.......................................................................... and by the time they had finished it Kivan said, "What mission? I should inform Captain Vreenak of this." And with that Kivan left engineering and headed for the bridge, with Savot right behind him. They entered the turbolift, and Kivan said "The bridge."
They exited they small, but efficient turbolift, and went over to Commander Vreenak.
"Captain Vreenak, could Savot and I have a word with you in your ready room?" Kivan asked the romulan captain.
"Certainly, Lieutenant." was the reply Kivan got.
They all entered the Captain's ready room, and the minute the door had closed, Kivan started to tell the Captain what the communications device had revealed.
"Captain, the communications device didn't tell us anything which seemed very serious at the time, but now I've had time to think about it, it may be slightly serious."
Kivan closed his eyes making sure he had remembered everything he needed to, because he didn't want to hesitate in front of the Captain, then he opened his eyes and started speaking.
"Sir, we learned that the borg were going to do some kind of mission, but our presence stopped that from happening, so they have been forced to do it at a different time, probably when we were gone. Unfortunately, the device did not tell us what mission the borg were on, or a definite date for when they should return." Kivan informed the Captain.
"They would logically send a scout ship here in a couple of days, to check if we are gone or not." Savot put in.
"But surely, sir, the borg won't know whether their sphere is destroyed or not, because it was destroyed so quickly and efficiently that it would not of had time to send messages to any other borg ships."
