"Did it not occur to either of you to wonder why those two decided to suddenly give themselves up ?" Tetsutaro asked.
"Admiral .. Docking tugs are in position and pushing the Renounce away." someone informed them.
"Given the situation Admiral." Calli said, before Will could reply, "No, it didn't occur to ponder their motive. Nor, unfortunately, did it occur to search the room for concealed devices that may, or may not, have been secreted into any of the systems ... Given their predicament, and the likelihood they would not have survived a fire-fight, it seemed, on reflection the logical thing for them to do. Had we had any suspicions they would attempt to sabotage the Renounce, then we would have acted accordingly to the situation."
"What is the status of the Renounce now ?" the Admiral asked.
"We could attempt to put a team on there, but given the time-frame I don't see how we can get through whatever protocol's those two put in place before the core goes." Blakus said, watching the ship drifting away perceptibly slowly, "SHE'S GOING !!!"
Everyone looked at the view-screen as it burst into whiteness before adjusting to prevent any damage to those present. They all knew what was coming, and the fact that every ship and vessel available was now between the explosion and the Star Base, it still didn't bode well. They knew the base would be affected, it was just a matter of how much. Calli hoped that there would be no fatalities as the shock-wave approached ... On-screen, the outermost vessel took the full force of the matter / anti-matter shock-wave, disintegrating instantly, then a second, and third, and fourth.
Before departing, each ship had re-routed one hundred percent of their power to maintaining the widest possible shields, before the skeleton crew had been taken off, so, thankfully, no-one was dying on those destroyed ships. Moments later, the shock-wave smashed into the shields of the Star Base itself ..... The burning sub-atomic particles from the explosion ripping into those shields stripping away layer upon layer of protection. With less than fifteen percent of shield generators remaining, the shock-wave passed the enormous structure and into the space beyond .....
"What is our status ?" Sato asked as the lighting came back on and people began to take their places in the Command Center.
"Reports are coming in now Admiral. But it seems we suffered only minor structural damage on decks twenty, to eleven hounded. The Dome took a hit, with number two and three space-dock doors fused. Sir ... The station has also moved ... We are currently one hundred sixty one thousand kilometres from our original position. Manoeuvring thruster's have begun moving us back into position."
"Sir, the Raven is approaching and asking if we require assistance." one of the Ops Officer's informed them. Sato spoke to Carl and told him the Raven was to dock to finish their re-fit, then he turned to Calli:
"I believe you should go down to that bar you frequent Calli. No arguments, you have done wore than enough to save the 'Base, now we shall begin to repair the damage caused, and I shall begin a thorough investigation into just 'why' the apprehension of our Android Officer was worth the murder of countless thousand's of people ... Now, go, take Commander Blakus with you. I will ensure your crew are informed.2 he turned away before Calli could see the tears forming in his eyes.
Calli stood outside O'Tools for several moments, Andae almost dutifully a pace behind and remaining silent. They both knew how different this could have turned out, and just how many could have been sacrificed for want of a single, or collective group of people who wanted 'ownership' of the Raven's Android Officer.
"Wanna bet there is two cognac on the bar when we get there ?" she asked, without looking back at Andae, before striding across the Promenade and entering O'Tooles ..........
