Shortly after the festivities of the graduation party had passed, S'reena had taken the earliest opportunity to slip out of the room and retire to her quarters. She'd never seen a commanding officer as dull as T'Lana, and now S'reena was determined to find something that must hold the stiff Vulcan's interest if not enjoyment. There had been a vain attempt to feed T'Lana drunk, however S'reena's own abstainment on the liquor had helped that plan backfire.
The Romulan woman smiled as her oldest two children launched themselves at their mother, screaming with delight. A bit further back stood Michael, peering through the lens of a holo-camera. S'reena kneeled to hug her daughters, then crouched to be at eye-level with her one-year old triplets who were crawling towards her. To S'reena, family was everything and she was always delighted when she could spend time with them.
Laughing, she fell onto her back as Kahlan gave her a playful shove. She winced as the freshly healed bones and surrounding muscles protested against the sudden movement, but she was determined not to let that spoil the fun. After a while, S'reena walked up to her husband and slipped both arms around his waist. For several minutes she just stood there holding on to him, then she released him and they parted with a kiss.
"There's something I need to do," she grinned, pulling him towards the computer console, "and I feel you might be of assistance."
"Oh?" Michael feigned surprise as he allowed himself to be pulled over.
"It's Captain T'Lana. I've got to find a way to make her loosen up. She's too bloody stiff, that's what. Now, Vulcan's don't go to a pub or anything but there must be something she'd like for entertainment? I'm going to search her records and see what I can come up with."
However, after hours of endless seaching, everything seemed to hit a dead end. "I can't believe this," S'reena grunted, "the woman really just has no interest in anything? " She glanced up at Michael, who shrugged in return. "I'm gonna find something," she said, determination set on her face. "She appears non-caring and cold-hearted...all right perhaps I agree on the cold-hearted appearance...but Vulcans have feelings."
She paled visibly. "Speaking of Vulcans...." She swallowed a few times. "I'm supposed to meet Salek at the pool...doctor's orders." She started to look frantic. "I'm scared Michael, I'm really scared."
Michael smiled encouragingly. "I'm sure Salek will take every safety precaution. You trust him don't you?"
"Yes but..."
"Then you have nothing to worry about," Michael interrupted her, "he won't let you drown. I've heard he's an excellent swimmer, and you asked him because you trust him right?"
"Yes but..."
"Go," Michael insisted, "it'll be fun. Once you learn how to swim we can actually run that beach program my mother gave you for your last birthday."
S'reena sighed in resignation. "All right all right, I'll go." She went to pack a few things and headed out the door, towards the pool.

After the graduation ceremony, Methos left the Holodeck and retired to his quarters. He quickly changed and sat in one of the chairs that were there. He intended on just sitting there, relaxing, when he suddenly got the urge to go for a swim. He went to his computer and called up a list of the Station's establishments. He found that there was a pool on the recreation deck. He was about to log off when he noticed that there was a message for him. He quickly scanned it and shut down his computer.
He put on a swim suit, a shirt, and some water shoes. He left his quarters and headed to a turbo-lift. Upon entering, he said, "Deck 65." The lift started moving and a short time later, it stopped and the doors opened to reveal the recreation area of the deck. He got off the lift and headed toward the pool.
When he got there, he saw that Commander Hope and Commander Salek were there. He walked over to the diving platforms and dove into the water. The coolness of the water shocked his system, but he ignored it and swam the length of the pool to where the two commanders were standing.
Methos surfaced and said, "Good day Commanders. How are things going in the shallows?"

S'reena had just worked up the courage to approach the shallow waterline when Methos surfaced. She gave a startled cry and jumped back, while Salek cast Methos a somewhat sour look. "Would you mind?" he spoke quietly as he motioned towards the visibly scared Romulan officer. "Unless you can offer your assistance in coaching her into the water, I propose you desist bothering us."
Salek took S'reena's arm once again and slowly stared guiding her towards the water. "You will only be in the water with your feet commander," he coached her, "there is noting to be afraid of. The water will be warm and you will have solid ground under your feet. I will not abandon you."
S'reena didn't doubt that Salek wouldn't abandon her, but the thought of entering water when the memory of drowning was so vivid in her mind, wasn't appealing to her. She jumped when water washed over her feet, and jumped straight into Methos, who had joined her on her other side. "I.." she started, glancing at the clear and rather pleasantly warm water.
She started to walk back, but Salek's comforting hand on her arm, and Methos' gentle grip on her other prevented her from doing so. "I can't do this," she whispered, looking frantically from Methos to Salek. "Brelev ordered it, she knows I can't swim!" It was not too common knowledge on the Hanson, that their first officer was deadly afraid of water, any water beyond what came out of a tap. She didn't even have a water shower, but only a sonic one.
"There is nothing to be afraid of," Salek offered gently, "fear is illogical. Cast out the fear and see what you can accomplish. I will be here to guide you, and it seems Major Methos has decided to assist me."

Daya smiled as he sat in a chair, watching from a short distance. He started laughing to himself as he watched s'reena's reaction to the procedings, and soon burst in fits of laughter, almost falling to the ground, holding his stomach.
"I never thought i would see the day, Commander hope afriad of a little water" he said aloud, and then stopped as he thought to himself, 'a littler water never hurt no body, but alot can kill ya' he said to himself, rubbing his chin.

S'reena stood with both feet in the water now, resisting the urge to bolt as she felt it wash over her bare feet. Only Salek's presence on her left, and Methos' encouragements on her right kept her from doing so. She needed to overcome this 'illogical fear' as Salek kept calling it, as it could seriously hamper her duties in the future. As they had discovered only too recently, if their relief mission on the oceanic planet hadn't been interrupted, S'reena would've been forced to face her fears the hard way.
Upon hearing Daya's laughing, she turned and shot him a murderous glare. "At least I try to face my fears and overcome them," she snapped back, none too pleased with his presence at all. However as this was a public pool, he had as much right to be here as she. "I'd like to see you try that some day...perhaps then I might have a good laugh too."
Her face was white with fear as she was encouraged to take the next few steps into the water. When it reached her calves, she froze. "No further," she said, as she shook her assistants off. Both Salek and Methos were trying to guide her in further, but she wouldn't budge.
Nearby, a child ignorant of the scene before him, made a canon-ball jump into the pool, splashing the three officers with water. This time, S'reena did bolt from the pool, grabbed her towel and wrapped it around her lithe body. "No more," she shivered, as she glanced from Vulcan to Human, her eyes wide with fright.

"I face my fears every day, I work with you after all" Daya said with a smile, trying hard to contain his laughter, to make S'reena's task a little easier on her. Daya leaned back in his chair, and took a deep breath. From the corner of his eyes he saw a flash as a little child ran past him, heading straight for S'reena. With a leap he jumped into the air and did a canon-ball, splashing all three of the officers.
Daya was momentarily unsure weither he should laugh or offer his assistance, being that he was a good guy for the most part. He made an attempt to help, but it went unoticed as S'reena sat shivering, both from fear and the wetness of the water.

Daya's response about working with her grated the Romulan officer, but she decided it was best not to respond to that. She cast an apologetic look towards Salek and Methos as she sat shivering, her large towel pulled tight around her body in an attempt to get warm.
She glanced aprehensively towards the water, her breathing fast and shallow in anxiety. If she quit now, it'd be all over the ship within minutes, yet if she didn't it'd equally be all over the ship. Fortunately, save for a couple of children and the four Hanson officers, the starbase pool was practically deserted. S'reena hoped it'd stay that way.
S'reena was hardly a coward, and anyone slinging that insult at her would be met with a ferocity they'd never seen before. Again, she glanced at Daya, a look of determination setting on her features. "If working with me is facing your fears on a daily basis commander," she started, sounding furious, "I wonder how you would feel if I were to send you to see to some maintenance on Conqueror's hull." She cast him a no-nonsense look to show that instead of retort, he should pack up and see to it that mainenance was going to get done, by him. "You may, of course take an EV suit, but you may not take a partner. You have three hours to see to a malfunction near the doors Space Dock one."
She saw Daya's eyes widen in surprise and she cast him a pleasant smile. "When you're done, we'll talk again about fears commander." She turned back to Salek, dropped her towel on her seat and walked back towards the shoreline of the pool. "Let's try this again...but more slowly. Orders are orders, and even if it's going to take me a lifetime, I will do this. I am not a coward!"

"i'll have you know commander hope i actually like being outside the ship" Daya said in a matter-of-fact tone, which wasnt completly false, he did enjoy it, but would prefer to have another working with him.

Salek shook his head at the exchange between S'reena and Daya. These species who do not use logic, they never cease to amaze him. But what can one do, they are as they are and he has to live with them. After Daya departed to go for a stroll on the hull of the ship he concentrated on S'reena once again.
"Are you ready to give it another try commander", he questioned, "But do not try to overdo it, you could as well make your fears worse then they are if you keep pushing yourself too much", he stated

S'reena sighed as she watched Daya leave; she hadn't wanted to chase him away, in fact she'd rather expected a retort and arguement to stay. Now that Daya was gone, she focussed on Salek, then tossed her towel aside with new resolve. "Maybe," she answered his deduction, "but I take orders from the CMO rather seriously, and since I don't want any reprimands for disobeying a CMO...I suppose I better face this hm?"
Together with the Vulcan counselor annex doctor, she walked back towards the pool's shallow end. Taking a deep breath she stepped into the warm water, again resisting the urge to leave. "I can do this," she murmured, while shivering with fear, "I am Romulan, I can do this." She stopped when she stood ankle deep in the water. "Further?" she querried, glancing from Salek to Methos, who had once more joined her on her other side.
Counselor and Marine stood supporting the shaking first officer as they guided her deeper into the water, foot by foot. S'reena stopped again when she was knee-deep into the water. "Just let me get used to this for a while," she suggested. Beneath her feet, the pool floor felt extremely slippery and the deeper she went, the more she had the feeling she was losing control over her own movements. And she wasn't ready to that just yet; treading water was one thing, floating was quite another and she didn't want to risk slipping and falling.
Of course she trusted her companions to catch her before that could happen, but she understood she wouldn't be overcoming the deeply ingrained fear in just one session. This would take several, if not forever and a fair amount of patience on the counselor's part. S'reena, however, trusted Salek with her life, especially since he'd saved hers on numerous occasions by now.
"How am I doing?" she whispered, looking fairly proud at having achieved this.

"If we take into account that before you this you avoided pools in a wide range the progress you made is more than 100% higher", Salek said
"I would advise against moving any further. You should get used to this much water and when you feel comfortable enough you can proceed further.", he said, "But this is something you should decide on your own. Whatever you decided i will assist you with carrying out that decision", he said
