Steve was sitting behind his desk with his feet upon it, leaning back on his chair. He had a fresh cup of tea sat upon the desk, slowly getting cooler by the minute. He was busy staring blankly at the door to his quarters on the Olympia. Now that Arya was declared fit to leave the medical facilities on Starbase Bellicose, she had taken up residence again in Steve's quarters....this time with their newborn daughter, Renora. Which, being Steve's wife and baby, he didn't mind one bit. He was glad that Arya was coming along with them after she had made it VERY clear that she wasn't going to be left behind, and she wasn't going to let Steve give up his command and career to be with her...so coming back to the Olympia worked out well for all concerned.
Trouble was, with her back as an active member of the crew, even if it was so soon after giving birth, with Arya being Arya, she got straight down to carry out her duty. That meant she was down in Sickbay assisting Dr Mallen with whatever needed to be done there. Not only that, she had taken Renora with her as well. That left Steve alone in his quarters, which would normally now hold 2 and a half people.
'Someone will soon come through that door.' He idly thought as he started to drift off.
No sooner had he thought that than his data terminal beeped VERY loudly at him. The noise made him virtually jump out of his skin, and he almost fell backwards off his chair. In doing so, Steve's legs swung back from the desk onto the floor....although with that swift movement, he managed to completely knock the cup of the desk, which landed near to the door of his quarters...tea spilled everywhere.
"Dammit." He muttered under his breath. "I was just about to drink that. And look at the mess!" He replied to himself, shaking his head at both the mess and at the fact that he was talking to himself....AGAIN.
He turned to the console before doing anything else. "This had better be important." He said while tapping in his command code to gain access. The screen popped up with the Federation logo which was then replaced a couple of seconds later with a screen full of text. It was the orders for the Olympia's next mission.
A couple of minutes later, Steve had read and re-read the orders and closed the terminal down. "Well, this one could be fun." He said as he went to find something to clean up the mess that he made. He went into the bedroom area and picked an old rag that he could use to soak up the liquid. Upon returning to the main area of his quarters he tapped his combadge.

Steve cut the link and got underway with a mission of his own.....'Mission: Tidy up'

David had been in his quarters for a while. He'd had a busy few days, and even though he could join others of the crew on the Starbase, he preferred to stay aboard ..
After all the work he and the bases' engineering crews had put in, it seemed that everything was ready for their departure. All they needed was Starfleet to contact the Captain with orders .. Everyone was getting restless on the ship now, and a mission was a must. But it wasn't unusual for a ship to be held for any length of time. He looked out the large window his quarters had, almost one hundred meters away, the Raven hung sedately against another dock, she too awaiting orders .. David had checked, and double-checked every aspect of the repairs. He was happy that things had gone well ..
As he moved to the replicator to get a night-cap, the ships' comms chimed ...
=^= This is the Captain to all Olympia senior staff .. I will be holding a mission briefing in the Briefing Lounge in one hour .. Please be on time .. Smith out =^=
'At last' Tan thought, deciding against the drink, in favor of grabbing a shower and change of uniform ...
Fifty minutes later, he was heading toward a turbo-lift, and the briefing that would outline their next, and only second 'official' outing as an active Starship ..........

After receiving the message from Captain Smith, Halthor was sure that the tests on the rifle were satisfactory, and complete to the best of his knowledge and expertise of the situation with phaser rifles, and improving the technology of them. He did not want to be mistaken that his tests were going to be a failure later on so he had to run a couple more. The tests were successfull too, and Halthor was more suprised about this new than usual so he got out one of his PaDD's, and made all the following notes with any minor details about the concluding tests done.
'Now I can get these rifles put away, and proceed to the meeting. Looks like Captain Smith has something in mind.' thoughts were running through halthors mind about the meeting as he had placed each rifle with its number station. The number stations were for keeping the weapons in order, and properly placed. The lights of each number station turned green as Halthor shut the shield that enclosed them in. With them all in place, Vander grabbed his bags, and PaDD's, and proceeded to his room and carefully placed them into the closet and walked out as fast as he could so he could be at the meeting without delay.
While walking down the entryway Halthor noticed some new crew members, but was going to meet them when his next chance at Ten Forward would take place. After pacing by them he made his entrance into the turbolift and spoke "Bridge" The turbolift shot off with amazing speed and Halthor was still baffled too this day about the technology of the turbolift. The door opened, and he noticed a serene smell of a new ship and new bridge. Noticing the briefing room area, Vander Halthor proceeded inside, and found a nice comfy seat.
"Andorian Ale, and a donut please" the food replicator made the food quickly and halthor sat eating for a bit, with the donut having sprinkles all over, a chocolate delight and the ale tasting like tea.

---Star Base Bellicose-Sick Bay---
As the doctors continued to test Daniel for any other problems due to the magnesium flash bomb, Daniel began to wonder how long this was going to take, his eye sight had started to return a few moments earlier but the doctors wanted to make sure his sight would return completely. Crystal was still waiting and Evan was passing a few steps away from Danielβs bio bed. βEvan if you do not stop passing I am going to think you are worried about meβ laugh at his own joke Daniel watched as Evan went red. At this point one of the doctors moved to Daniel and handed him a hyprospray βright, we are going to release you, on the condition that you must take that hyprospray every 4 hours, it will help your eye sight return properly. And counsellor stay away from any flash bombs in the futureβ Daniel smiled at this knowing it was a medical joke. βOk doctor I will tryβ. Stepping off the bio bed both Evan and Crystal were next to him in seconds as if they expected him to fall over when he got off.

βWell I think we had best return to the Olympia, Crystal I would like to see that ensign at 0800 hours tomorrow to deal with thisβ Daniel spoke to both Crystal and Evan, both nodding. As they reached the Olympia crystal went her separate ways with the counsellors.
---Olympia---
Arriving at his office Daniel took his seat, βEvan I want you and the others to start evaluations of the science staff today, ignoring Ensign Erikson as I will deal with her myself. But first I want you to make sure we have facilities for the new born baby in the form of care, just encase the captain and his wife have trouble concentrating on their work if and when this mission or any future mission goes badβ Daniel could not help but want to make sure it was available for them if they wanted it. Daniel spent the remaining time writing up reports to hand in during the briefing, not including the incident with the flash bomb till he had words with the ensign.
Walking towards the briefing room Daniel made sure all his reports were on one Padd, and another he had the details of a few nannies for the captain and his wife to look at if this wished. Entering the briefing room Daniel found only a few members of the senior staff present. Nodding to the few Daniel sat down and continued going over the reports.

Daniel had just been cleared by the starbase Doctors when the Captain's message came through. That he was okay was a great relief, part of that relief was that the Assistant Chief Counselor would not be attempting to kill her later. Meeting Evan had been an interesting experience...

βWell I think we had best return to the Olympia, Crystal I would like to see that ensign at 0800 hours tomorrow to deal with thisβ Daniel said. Crystal nodded. "I'll keep her off duty until at least then"
The three of them walked back to the Olympia together and then Crystal left the other two to head to the lab before the briefing. Commander Halthor had been check the modification status of the phaser rifles and she had been pleased to report that the focusing problem had been solved so beam power was up 38.5% and beam diameter was down to 5.5 microns, and that held over distance. It seemed Andrew had been inspired over night and then it hadn't taken long to make the necessary changes. Still Crystal hadn't seen the results yet and she wanted to.
When she reached the lab; Mendon, K'Ther and Andrew were looking over the results of their work. They had been joined by V'Sal. Crystal quickly briefed her assistants on Tonja's status and then took the time to look over her teams results. They were good. She was pleased. Of course more tests would have to be run to see how the modified rifles stood up to extended and repeated use but so far they were green to go.
Crystal just had time to grab some food, cheese and ham sandwiches and a glass of mint tea before heading to the briefing room. She arrived hot on Lt Beirs's heels and was relieved to note that he was looking much better than when they had left sickbay.

"Please be joking" Tiberian groaned into his pillow, as he lay awkwardly in his bed. Having seen to the rotas, the crew assignments, and the cargo bays, he had only just got his head down to sleep properly before the message had been announced.
He rolled out of bed, and landed with a thump on the floor, moaning again as he extracated his arms from their odd positions, and pushed himself to his feet. He staggered bleary eyed into the bathroom and splashed cold water on his face to wake himself up. Five handfuls later he found this not to be working, and so settled for a sharp slap across the right hand side of his face. This brought everything back into a sharp focus. Tiberian stared at himself in the mirror, particularly noting the bags under his bloodshot eyes. He stripped off his shorts and t-shirt, and clambered into the sonic shower, humming a disjointed and only half remembered tune as he cleaned himself. Climbing out he spoke to the computer as he dressed himself, asking for a report of the crew status. A staff briefing could mean only one thing; a mission, and if there was to be a mission, then the crew needed to be in top shape. He was pleased to hear that all the crew were healthy and accounted for, but did strike upon a sickbay visit by Lieutenant Biers.
"Computer, identify the reason for Mr Biers' incapacitation" He asked as he clipped his kit belt together.
"The incapacitation was due to an explosion near Deck 2" the computer's voice answered.
"Probably another damn relay" Tiberian said to himself as he worked the repliactor panel "Contact engineering and have them send a man to investigate. If parts of the ship blow up, I want it to be because of some other ship, not our own bloody negligence"
"Confirmed" the computer replied, them message having been sent. Tiberian lifted the strong cup of coffee out of the replicator and headed to the door. He left his quarters quite quickly, despite there being nearly twenty minutes until the meeting began. His right hand carried the steaming coffee, and his left the menagerie of padds he had collected from his quarters. Despite all his efforts, the Olympia still had several hundred sets of useless medical equipment that they simply did not need, and with no seeming hope of getting it removed. He tapped and sipped as he walked, nodding occasionally to passing crewmembers. He arrived on the bridge in fairly good time, making a quick once round all the stations that were manned before entering the conference room. He was the first there, and took what was now his customary seat at the right hand side of the Captain's chair. Commander Halthor was the next to arrive, ordering ale and a donut from the replicator. Tiberian couldn't help but laugh out loud as the Andorian came to sit down at the table with his food and beverage.
"Forgive me Commander" Tiberian said, calming himself down "But of all the things to eat in a staff briefing, that is one for the record books" He scratched the stubble on his chin, the last traces of laughter fading away. "I got you report on the phaser rifles. Thanks for doing that, I appreciate it. I know i shouldn't, but let's hope that we get a chance to field test them on this mission"
<TAG Commander Halthor>
Next to arrive was Commander Tan, followed shortly by Lieutenants Biers and Rose. Each recieved a nod from Tiberian, except Biers, to whom he said.
"I hear about the explosion Lieutenant, how are you?"

Arya was enjoying her time now out of sickbay. Her daughter was cradled in her arms as she had her bag over one shoulder. She knew Steve would have their quarters ready for them by the time they got to the ship.
She entered her quarters and carefully set down her bag on the bed keeping Renora in her arms. She saw the basinet and put the baby in there to sleep. She was glad little Renora wasn't crying and hoped she would grow out of the cry every ten minutes stage soon.
Arya unpacked quietly and then realized that if she and her husband were both working at the same time, something needed to be done with their child. I couldn't leave her with someone. I wonder if the doctor would mind if I kept her near me. She thought and realized she couldn't take the basinet with her to sickbay every time. She sighed and sat down to think of the best way to carry the child.
After some research into a few different carrying methods, Arya had concoted a carrying pouch for Renora. It was made of a durable cloth that would rip or break, and she made sure to keep Renora on the front of the carrying pouch instead of on the back like some of those of old did. I wouldn't be able to reach her if she was on my back and began to cry. She thought and realized that it would be a good idea to report in to sickbay at that time.
The ride down to sickbay had been too quiet. Arya often checked on Renora, pleasantly surprised that the child was sleeping the whole way.
She stepped into sickbay and found the doctor was in her office. Going over and entering she walked up to the desk and carefully stood at attention.
"Doctor, Arya Smith reporting in for duty. I have also with me Renora. I didn't feel comfortable leaving her with someone, and I hope you don't mind her being with me. She won't get in the way of my duties," she said waiting for some kind of response.
Suddenly she heard her husband's voice calling all senior staff to a briefing, and she knew that didn't include her now.

"Thank you, sir, I hope we do get to field test them together" Halthor replied with a smile on his face while enjoying his donut some more, and nibbling on the little sprinkles all over the donut, that were so lightly colored. The donut was circular in fashion, and Halthor loved the taste of it so much that he thought of ordering more when he had time to go Ten Forward.
Halthor was enjoying this meeting more than anything first getting a compliment from the executive officer about having his meal in the meeting, and now relaxing and listening intently to the words that were being spoken by XO, this couldn't be better. With great suprise Halthor wasn't thrown into the brig for his actions of having the alcoholic beverage so he took it as a warning only to make it a special occasion when on events that were celebrated on his home planet of Andoria.
Andoria was beautiful to him but was intensely cold, and only those who had well enough temperatures to handle staying on such a planet could live there. That was why he was so blue, and his blood temp was so cold. He loved the cold, the heat was not something he liked rather well but he had to be accustomed to it. After thinking of Andoria, Halthor flashed back to the briefing and waited for the captain to make his appearance.

David was pleased they were about to get underway .. He'd been more than a little agitated at how he'd been treated at times, and thought that once they were in open space, having a mission to deal with, things would improve ..
As he neared the Bridge, he checked the PADD he was carrying, making sure all the relevant clearances were there, just waiting for the Captains authorization ..
Arriving at the meeting, David noticed he wasn't the first to arrive .. 'Good' he thought, 'no point in beating everyone in there, anyway it is better to ..' he finished off the thought as he noticed a drink in front of commander Halthor .. The drink was obviously Andorian Ale .. Tan looked round the table, double-checking he wasn't in the galley !
"Mr Halthor .. Is there ANY reason you would be sitting there drinking .. Short of wishing a speedy departure from both the Olympia AND Starfleet ?" he asked quietly.
"Sir ?" Vander said, throwing a puzzled look at Wong, "Major Wong barely commented on the drink and donut ...."
"Am I correct in thinking you are attending this briefing as the Olympia's Chief of Security ?" Tan continued, locking eyes with the CTSO, not giving him, or Wong, time to reply.
"Yes Sir .. Of cour ....."
"Then get RID of that .. NOW !" David interrupted, pointing at the picnic Vander seemed to be having .. It was then that the first Officer chose to speak .. Not the best timing ..
"Commander Tan ...." he began, "I'm sure we can let thi ..."
David spun to face the Marine .. His eyes, jet black normally, seemed to have got even blacker ..
"Mr Wong !" he began, using the Majors actual 'rank' rather than his position, "IF THIS is your idea of how a Federation Starship is run .. Then you are sadly mistaken .. I cannot .. And will not condone this sort of action on any ship I serve on .. Nothing that was said when we got back here has made the slightest dent in that 'Shoot to kill .. Do or Die head of yours .." he threw the PADD containing the ships' clearances on the desk in front of Wong, "My request for a transfer from the Olympia will be on the Captain's desk in one hour .. I'm sure you can manage the briefing without me !" ...
Tan spun on his heal and walked from the briefing room, the door closing silently behind him .. Round the table, no-one dared speak .. Vander finally rose and deposited his drink and plate on the replicator before re-taking his seat .. Major Wong stared fixedly at the PADD in front of him, refusing to acknowledge the others in the room .. Then asked casually for anyone who had departmental problems to bring them up before the Captain arrived ...
~~~~~~~~~~
Back in his quarters, David sat at his desk .. He couldn't cope with how the XO was doing things, and it didn't seem he was going to change anytime soon .. David had only one choice left to him .. Activating the computer console manually, he spoke ...
"Computer .. Access files .. Tan."
"Accessed."
"Open previous file entitled 'TRANSFER REQUEST' ..." he said, then looked at the blank page with just a heading .. for a few seconds, he stared at the screen. then to give him some 'thinking time', he went to the replicator ..
"Brandy .. Double .." he ordered, then, "Cancel order .."
He sat at his desk, wondering if this would be his last day on the USS Olympia ..........
"I heard about the explosion Lieutenant, how are you?"
Daniel was surprised that the XO had checked the medical records, Daniel was still unwilling to give a full report till he had talked to the Ensign involved. βI am fine sir, it was nothing to really worry about, I will be dealing with something first then I will give you a report on it later if you want it?β Daniel did not really listen for an answer, nor did he get one as David came into the briefing room.
Watching from his seat, Daniel watched as David stormed out of the briefing. βwell here we goβ quickly picking up the Padd with his report on, he quickly opened a new file and began noting his belief in this David-Tiberian situation and Tiberian in general, as he came to an end he placed a request to have Tiberian and David sent to his office ASAP for a psychological evaluation with the captainβs authority, Daniel preferring that than to suggest possible action until he had at least found the route cause of this mess, Daniel still hoped David would not transfer other all this but he had to assume he was not until the captain granted the transfer.
Sealing the file so that only the captain would be able to access it, he turned and place both Padds in front of the captains chair and waited for the captain to arrive, hoping that the XO would not pick up that Padd and notice the sealed file.
"I heard about the explosion Lieutenant, how are you?" The XO spoke to Daniel virtually the second he walked in the door. Crystal winced internally, it wasn't that she wanted to keep things quiet or that she blamed herself for the accident it was really that she wanted an explanation for Tonja's behaviour before she had to explain it to anyone else.
βI am fine sir, it was nothing to really worry about, I will be dealing with something first then I will give you a report on it later if you want it?" Crystal slipped into a chair as the Counselor spoke and breathed a sigh of relief. This was a mess, she knew that but at least things hadn't got worse. She really owed Daniel now. In a way she hoped that Tonja turned out to be unbalanced then she could be treated, if Tonja was sane and rational and had still thought her plan to be reasonable then Crystal had no idea what to attempt next.
Then Commander Tan walked in, the SO glanced quickly round the table and then started to bawl out Commander Halthor about his drink (Crystal hadn't really registered the drink, although she agreed that proper alcohol had no place in a staff meeting) and then had turned on the XO. Crystal sank into her chair and tried to be invisible. There was complete silence round the table in the wake of the SO's departure. She pretty much hoped that the SO wouldn't transfer off the Olympia. Crystal would have said that the XO was definitely the more volatile of the two but this out burst proved that the SO wasn't exactly cool calm and collected either. She had been a bystander so far and would be happy to remain that way. However this couldn't continue too much longer. If they had a row when the ship was in danger....
Crystal quietly put her PADD of reports on the table (it contained nothing about Tonja, that was still in progress) and then sat in silence, hoping to be ignored, and wishing the Captain would arrive soon, before anything else happened.
Steve was running late for his briefing once again. If he kept this up, he would get a reputation in no time. He quickly strode into the Briefing Lounge. His senior staff began to stand as a matter of courtesy, but Steve put his hand up to stop them so they could remain seated.
He looked around the room at the occupants, and noticed that two people were missing: David Tan, and Doctor Mallen.
Before he could even begin to question their absence, Tiberian slid the padd that David had left across the desk in front of Steve. Steve picked it up and read the contents.
"He wants a transfer, sir."
"HE WHAT??" Steve exclaimed, then realised that came out louder than intended. "Why?
"I don't know sir. He came in, blew his top and me and Mr Halthor and left. But I believe that is best sorted out and discussed between you and he, not here" Wong replied.
Sighing, Steve shook his head. This was NOT what he wanted. David was one of Steve's best and most trusted officers. What on Earth had happened to make him want to leave?
"Well, whatever his reasons, I will deal with that later, and I may need you in on it at some point Major. Now, we need to get this briefing started. I see we are still missing our Doctor. I assume she must be busy otherwise she would be here...." Steve then tapped his commbadge;
=/\= Captain Smith to Commander Smith. Arya as it appears that Doctor Mallen cannot attend the mission briefing, I would like you to take her place. Please get up here as soon as possible. That includes Renora too. Smith out. =/\=
"Now, we'll just have to start without her." Steve said, finally taking his seat. "Fifteen years ago the Comari / Bonaris war ended and since then the two systems, five inhabited planets in total, have been gradually recovering.Three years ago the systems joined the Federation and the have been receiving help since then to collect and decommission the remaining weaponry. The worst of the weapons created during the war were the Comari Tauri Bursts which were used twice during the war leaving a hundred kilometer wide area of once settled planet devastated in both cases. The Tauri Bursts release large quantities of delta and theta radiation which destroy all organic matter in the burst radius. The last of these weapons has remained in very secure storage until a means of safely removing and disposing of the active core could be discovered. The Research Center on Sigma Leonis V has recently managed this and has decommissioned the prototype."
Steve stood up again, and waited for that information to sink in. Standing behind his chair, he carried on:
"The Olympia is charged with transporting the last Tauri Burst from its secure store in the Comari system to the decommissioning center. It is a major target for terrorist and weapons dealers. Accompanying the weapon will be its creator; Professor Sagan Hartti who is naturally the expert on the Tauri Burst and a key part of the decommissioning team."
"Vander, I want you to make sure that the Professor has an escort at all times. Under no circumstances is he to go anywhere near ant of our essential systems or operations without my say so."
"Daniel, read up on the Professor's file. It seems that there is a little history of madness within him. Find out what you can both from him and the records to determine whether he may pose a threat at any point. I know it's unlikely, but I would rather be sure."
"Crystal, I want you to assist the Professor in any way that you can. The sooner that weapon is decommissioned and off my ship, the better. Whatever help he needs, you give it to him....within reason. Any doubts whatsoever, alert the Major or me."
Steve then turned to the entire room. "Now, does anyone have any questions?"
Arya heard her husband and couldn't believe it. She remembered the last time she was in a briefing and sighed only after she acknowledged that she would be on her way.
She strode into the room with her daughter in the carrying pouch sleeping hearing only part of the mission briefing. She also heard the part about questions noticing someone had slid over a padd with what she missed. She quietly thanked the officer and quickly read what was on the padd.
"Will they have any need for medical assistance once we reach our target?" she said hoping to help out even though she hadn't a clue on what she would be needed for unless their ship were attacked.
The Captain arrived before anything else dramatic happened. The XO explained what had happened to Commander Tan although he left out rather a lot of salient points in Crystal's opinion. There was going to be a lot of discussion needed to sort this out
The Captain called Commander Smith to sit in on the briefing in Dr Mallen's absence and then started to explain the situation.
"The Tauri Bursts release large quantities of delta and theta radiation which destroy all organic matter in the burst radius. Crystal winced, delta and theta radiation were just plain nasty.
"The Olympia is charged with transporting the last Tauri Burst from its secure store in the Comari system to the decommissioning center. It is a major target for terrorist and weapons dealers. Accompanying the weapon will be its creator; Professor Sagan Hartti who is naturally the expert on the Tauri Burst and a key part of the decommissioning team." Crystal hadn't heard of Professor Hartti but resolved to read up on his work before they met.
"Crystal, I want you to assist the Professor in any way that you can. The sooner that weapon is decommissioned and off my ship, the better. Whatever help he needs, you give it to him....within reason. Any doubts whatsoever, alert the Major or me." "Yes, sir", Crystal said. Her mind was working furiously, she felt she had her hands fairly full with one possibly mad scientist and didn't really want to deal with two at the same time. Still she had a lot of practice at dealing with 'eccentric' professors.
The Captain then turned to the entire room. "Now, does anyone have any questions?" After Commander Smith had received an answer to her question Crystal spoke up.
"When are we planning on leaving the starbase, sir"
After the briefing, As they were leaving Crystal managed to catch up with Lt. Biers. "I'm sorry to impose on you further, but is there anyway you could fit Ensign Erikson in to your schedule before we leave Bellicose?"
"I'll see that she makes her appointment. Thank-you for your trouble. I hope to get this sorted as quickly as possible. Thanks again."
Daniel listened closely as the captain gave them the briefing, Daniel himself had been taught about post war syndromes that came after many wars during his time at university, including Comari-Bonaris war syndrome that had affected more than 60% of the fighting population. "Daniel, read up on the Professor's file. It seems that there is a little history of madness within him. Find out what you can both from him and the records to determine whether he may pose a threat at any point. I know it's unlikely, but I would rather be sure." Daniel thought βwell I hope they actually gave his medical details to the Federation when they joined or this could be very difficult indeedβ Daniel nodded to the captain and quickly grab the spare Padd and started making notes of things he needed to know fast.
As the briefing came to a close, Crystal walked over to him as he was about to leave and asked "I'm sorry to impose on you further, but is there anyway you could fit Ensign Erikson in to your schedule before we leave Bellicose?" Daniel quickly thought, βwell if you send her to me in about 20mins I should be able to see her, by then I will have got the request off to get the Professors details, is that ok with you?β, "I'll see that she makes her appointment. Thank-you for your trouble. I hope to get this sorted as quickly as possible. Thanks again." Crystal replied.
Arriving at his office he found Evan had already got the Cadet and Ensign working, βEvan I will be in my office when Ensign Erikson arrives send her though, and try not to interrupt me until thenβ Daniel did not wait for a response before closing the door on him, moving to the computer terminal Daniel keyed in his access code and sent a request to star fleet for the medical and psychological records on Professor Sagan Hartti. Moving back to his desk, Daniel considered what he was going to ask the ensign when she arrived.
Just as he finished creating the string of initial questions, the computer flashed up the records he had requested, moving over to look at them he was not surprised by what he saw. PROFESSOR SAGAN HARTTI- PSYCHOLOGICAL RECORDS
PROFESSOR HARTTI HAS CONTINUED TO REFUSE ANY EVALUATIONS BY MEDICAL STAFF, WE BELIEVE THIS TO BE SIGNS OF POST TRAUMATIC STRESS, BUT WITHOUT FULLY EVALUATING HIM THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DIAGNOSE. WE HOPE THAT AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE HE WILL PERMIT SOMEONE TO PERFORM THIS, BUT WE DO NOT HOLD OUT HOPE
DR FERV MARRANTI
-End of record- Shaking his head Daniel first sent the medical records to sickbay to save them some time, then he became slightly worried about this professorβs state of mind but before he could do much more the door to his office opened and he saw an ensign waiting on the other side, βyou must be Ensign Erikson, please take a seatβ Daniel quickly closed the screen and returned to his desk, Daniel watched as she quickly took a seat and looked at him. βduring this session I will be evaluating your mental state, and also trying to get reasons for you attempt at setting an explosive in a Jefferies tube, do you understand what I have just saidβ Tonja nodded, picking up the Padd he had prepared he began his evaluation.
Daniel had been prepared for most things but to find nothing mentally wrong with her troubled him worse than had she been completely insane. Standing near the window looking out at the stars speeding past them Daniel thought of what he had to do. βWell Ensign Erikson, I have found nothing mentally wrong with you, which leaves me no choose but to remove you from active duty until a full investigation is concluded, full details of any bans during this period will be given to you by the first officer or the Captain at their earliest convenience, until then I would suggest remaining in you quarters, is that understood ensign?β Daniel knew he was slightly over stepping but he had no choice, she was a threat to the crewβs safety, namely the XO. As Tonja eventually nodded Daniel indicated to the door. Grabbing the Padd with all his findings including his report on what happened he made his way to the bridge to find the Major Wong.
Arriving on the bridge, he looked around and saw the XO in his chair. Walking down to him Daniel felt extremely nervous as he approached, not because he was scared of the First Officer, but he hated doing what he was about to do. βSir, here is my report on the explosion and who was responsible, including her evaluation. I have taken her off the active duty roster until you have gone though and made a decision with the captain.β Daniel handed Tiberian the Padd, βif there is anything else you require please just ask and I will provide it, if there is timeβ Daniel quickly flashed a glance at Crystal while she was on the science station.
Twenty minutes just gave Crystal to locate Tonja on the starbase and escort her to the Counselor's office. She then loitered in the hallway long enough to ensure that she went in and did not immediately rush out again. Crystal sighed and then went back up to the bridge. There was so much still to sort out, although her report on Tonja was not one of them. That was simply waiting on the outcome of Daniel's analysis.
The XO was in the centre chair when she arrived and settled at the science station, fortunately Tonja's booby trap had done no damage to it and all the evidence had all ready been cleared away.
Crystal called up Prof. Hartti's most recent papers, none of which were that recent, and began reading. It seemed that he had done very little work that did not have direct military applications. His research papers were also rather vague on the subject of his methods: the results, however, were very clear and sent an involuntary shiver down Crystal's spine.
A while later Daniel arrived, he looked a little pale and Crystal winced. This was not going to be good. She listened in on his words to the XO as much as she could. βSir, here is my report on the explosion and who was responsible, including her evaluation. I have taken her off the active duty roster until you have gone though and made a decision with the captain.β Daniel handed Tiberian the Padd, βif there is anything else you require please just ask and I will provide it, if there is timeβ Daniel quickly flashed a glance at Crystal while she was on the science station. Crystal gave him a slightly wan smile and mouthed thank-you as a response. She owed the Counsellor at least another one now.
Crystal had a feeling that things were about to kick off.
Tiberian sat and listened to the meeting with interest, paying particular note to the part about it having a lethal range of up to one hundred thousand kilometres. A marine although he was, Tiberian really did prefer it when his opponents weren't capable of killing quite so effectively. Security would also be a major issue, as if this was indeed the last device of its kind, then its black market value would be astronomical. He expected great outside interference, and planned to talk to Commander Halthor about this personally. The Captain dismissed the briefing, and everyone stodd to leave. Tiberian tarried at the end, slowly making his way to the door ater the others, and drumming his fingers lightly on the table as he went. When it was only him and the Captain in the room, and the doors had closed behind the other staff, he turned.
"Sir, I just wanted to say that I can appreciate what Commander Tan is going through. I've been in the situation of having a disagreeable superior officer, and I can relate. I also know that he is both a capable officer, and a friend of yours, and so I can understand that you don't want to lose him. I happen to still be quite good friends with Captain Cir'Kem, and I know that the Vic hasn't refilled my old post yet. If there is anything I can do to alleviate the situation, you let me know sir"
<TAG Captain Smith>
Tiberian emerged from the conference room, and was on the verge of taking his seat on the bridge, when he thought better of it, and walked round to the tactical console to speak to Commander Halthor.
"Commander, I just thought that I'd bring up the matter of the weapon's safety. I was thinking about isolating an entire cargobay, clearing all materials, and doing a full sensor sweep to confirm it's empty. Then we could seal it, and disable oxygen and artificial gravity, with the exception of the gantry control room. That would make it practically impervious to thieves. We should also set up forcefields and transprter inhibitors. What do you think"
<TAG Commander Halthor>
Tiberian nodded. "Well, I'll have Sergeant Major Martinez co-ordinate with you, and put the marines at your disposal for both the bomb and Professor Harrti. Do as you see fit, but keep me and the Captain informed"
He walked around to the centre circle, and took his seat, opening a message to Bellicose.
"To Operations Chief, Starbase Bellicose. My compliments, and I would appreciaate it if, provided all repair work is done and supplies are loaded, that all base personnel will vacate the Olympia by noon tomorrow. Yours sincerely, Major Wong, XO of the Olympia. Computer send message. The computer chiped in response, just as Lieutenant Biers approached, and placed a padd in his hand.
βSir, here is my report on the explosion and who was responsible, including her evaluation. I have taken her off the active duty roster until you have gone though and made a decision with the captain.β Daniel handed Tiberian the Padd, βif there is anything else you require please just ask and I will provide it, if there is timeβ Daniel quickly flashed a glance at Crystal while she was on the science station.
Tiberian read through the padd, discovering for the first time that the explosion had been deliberate, not a fused relay as he had thought. Moreover, the explosion had been intended for him. He glanced up, just briefly, from the padd, and saw the entire bridge crew staring at him with baited breath, as if waiting for an almighty explosion. First came a twitching of the corners of Tiberian's lips, then a flash of his teeth, and then an almighty rip roaring howl of laughter that shocked everyone present on the bridge.
"Don't look so bloody nervous" He said calmly between sobs of laughter "It's not that big a deal"
Biers looked like he might faint from the shock of seeing Tiberian so happy, so Tiberian pressed on quickly with an explanation.
"I did the exact same thing to one of my friends at the academy you see. I was in junior year, and he'd set me up on a date with this alien from a gender indeterminate species. So to get him back, during a close quarters combat session, when he was clearing out a jeffries tube, I set off a flash charge and a percussion grenade. He couldn't see or hear anything for the rest of the day" Tiberian broke down laughing again "Now then, don't ever let Commander Tan hear about this, but just put a mild letter of warning in her file, nothing with specifics, have her apologise to you, give her a token slap on the wrist and send her on her way. Now to more pressiing matters" Tiberian moved on to help Biers overcome his shock "What did the files say about this Harrti chap?"
<TAG Lieutenant Biers>
"Well that's just great" Tiberian rubbed his eyes "Miss Rose, tell me what time we're expecting Prospero and his book of spells onboard, and then assist Commander Halthor with the security arrangements if you'd be so good"
<TAG Lieutenant Rose>
After having the conversation with Commander Tan, Commander Halthor's actions with the Andorian ale weren't so highly looked upon because it was a meeting of extreme importance, and now the Commander was furious with the fact that Halthor would do this in the first place seeing as he was always following starfleet protocol but in this instance he was not. Drinking a alcoholic beverage on duty was not something to have fun with or to be fancied.
So by Commander Tan's orders, Halthor disposed of the drink, and had his donut eaten rather quickly because he wanted something in his stomach before he got back to his security posting. After this had been handled the executive officer chose to speak with Halthor and leaving Commander Tan frustrated with how Halthor had acted, and walked back to his quarters.
[green]"Commander, I just thought that I'd bring up the matter of the weapon's safety. I was thinking about isolating an entire cargobay, clearing all materials, and doing a full sensor sweep to confirm it's empty. Then we could seal it, and disable oxygen and artificial gravity, with the exception of the gantry control room. That would make it practically impervious to thieves. We should also set up forcefields and transporter inhibitors. What do you think"[/green]
"Excellent Idea Sir, Safety is paramount to the whole crew, and with this experiment that you have proposed I believe it will be of extreme importance, especially in the case that I haven't yet tested the safety of the weapons, and should have thought of that in the first place." Commander Halthor nodded to Major Wong and gave him his approval on the situation, and would carry it out within the next hour. Then Captain Smith made his way into the meeting to let Vander, and the rest know of there duties.
[green]"Vander, I want you to make sure that the Professor has an escort at all times. Under no circumstances is he to go anywhere near ant of our essential systems or operations without my say so."[/green]
"Yes, sir I will make sure the Professor is well taken care of and escorted." Vander noted and logged into his PaDD.
Between the hour Halthor wanted to get in touch with Commander Tan about his incident in the meeting room. He proceeded out of the doorway, and proceeded to the turbolift, it shot off to the deck Tan was on. Halthor made his way next to his quarters then pressed on the door bell. "Lt. Commander Halthor, Sir, I wanted to speak with you about what happened in the meeting room, can we speak about this personally instead of with a bunch of people."
<Tag Tan>
As Halthor walked into Tan's quarters he replied "Sir, I want to say it is inexcusable was happened there at the meeting, and I am very sorry for my actions in there. They were not professional to say the least. If you must, I will make a confession to the report if you make one of me drinking on duty in a meeting."
<Tag Tan>
After they had both talked Halthor had many things he had to focus on and so he said farewell for the time being and made his way to make the arrangements in the carbobay for the weapons, and there safety procedures. He had organized a team with this then made his way to see the Professor.
... TRANSFER REQUEST ... The words were flashing, patiently, waiting for David to begin talking. But he couldn't .. He knew why, he was loyal to Steven Smith, his Commanding Officer .. Leaving the Olympia for the reasons he would have to state, would be hurtful to say the least to the Captain .. They were friends as well as colleagues ... As he pondered where he would go if indeed he did send in the request, the door chimed .. David looked up, it could only be one of a few people. Getting up, he neared the door, the sensor opening it as he approached ... He was a little surprised to see Vander stood in the corridor, but after a seconds' hesitation, he said come in ... "Lt. Commander Halthor .. Sir .. I wanted to speak with you about what happened in the meeting room .. Can we speak about this personally instead of with a bunch of people ?" Vander began saying as he entered, "I want to say it is inexcusable was happened there at the meeting .. I am very sorry for my actions in there .. They were not professional to say the least .. If you must I will make a confession to the report if you make one of me drinking on duty in a meeting." "Commander .." David began, "You should not have been drinking .. No .. But in my view there is nothing for you to apologize for .. If thats what you came here for .. YOU were at fault yes .. But the First Officer was sat meters away and had said nothing .. That was my issue !" "That may well be so Comman ......" Halthor began. But David interrupted him .. "You made a mistake .. It wont happen again .. I'm certain of it .. As for Major Wong ...." Tan took a deep breath then continued, "He's our First Officer .. As such we need to follow the chain of Command .. But that Command needs to be seen to be working .. Rest assured .. A report will .. If necessary be forwarded to Starfleet Command on the FO's actions .. But for now Captain Smith has more than enough on his mind .. I'm more than sure he's keeping on top of it though .. Rest assured." "OK .. Vander said, moving back toward the door, "It would be good to see you back at Opps Commander .." "I'll see you on the Bridge Mr Halthor .. Don't hesitate to contact me if need be .. And .. Thank you for your concern and apology commander.." Vander nodded as the door closed, then he headed for the nearest turbo-lift .. In his quarters, David sat at his console. The flashing words almost mesmerizing in their steady rhythm ..........
When the XO burst out laughing Crystal couldn't have been more shocked, she had been expecting some sort of angry out burst directed at herself and the Counselor. She leaned on her station, tried not to sigh to deeply and kept half an ear on the conversation behind her.
"Don't look so bloody nervous" the XO said calmly between sobs of laughter "It's not that big a deal"
"I did the exact same thing to one of my friends at the academy you see. I was in junior year, and he'd set me up on a date with this alien from a gender indeterminate species. So to get him back, during a close quarters combat session, when he was clearing out a jeffries tube, I set off a flash charge and a percussion grenade. He couldn't see or hear anything for the rest of the day" Now this Crystal could easily see although she had never figured the Major for any sort of practical joker. The XO broke down laughing again "Now then, don't ever let Commander Tan hear about this, but just put a mild letter of warning in her file, nothing with specifics, have her apologise to you, give her a token slap on the wrist and send her on her way. Now to more pressing matters" The XO continued to talk to Daniel while Crystal worked on composing herself. She would be happy to have Tonja back on duty but wasn't sure it was such a good idea, after all if someone had be temporarily blinded in the middled of a mission... Crystal decided she would do her best to keep an eye on the ensign in future. She sighed silently and tried to remember if Tonja had proposed any other outlandish schemes, she vaguely recalled something about pink paint.... She made a note to write up in full what she could remember of Tonja's ideas and send them to Daniel.
The XO looked round at her "Miss Rose, tell me what time we're expecting Prospero and his book of spells onboard, and then assist Commander Halthor with the security arrangements if you'd be so good" Crystal puzzled for a second or two before figuring out the reference and then answered.
"We should be able to get safely underway within 60 minutes of arriving at the secure storage, Professor Hartii will be beaming aboard directly we are in transporter range."
She nodded in response to the Major's last order "Yes, sir." She tapped her comm badge.
=/\=Lieutenant Rose to Commander Halthor. I've been reading up about the Tauri Burst, may I assist you with the security arrangements?=/\= She knew that the reports were available to everyone but probably wouldn't make a great deal of sense to a non scientist.
=/\=Of course, sir, I'll be right down. =/\= Crystal grabbed her ever present PADD made sure all the information she needed was on it and then left the bridge.
=/\=That would be splendid Lt. see too it that your here early and prompt I don't want the Professor to be of on his own schedule, and to have himself wondering around the ship tampering with our own things, we wouldn't want that to happen now, now wouldn't we=/\=Halthor commented on meeting up with Lt. Rose and having the appropriate security arrangements in place for an escort for the professor.
[green]=/\=Of course, sir, I'll be right down. =/\= Crystal grabbed her ever present PADD made sure all the information she needed was on it and then left the bridge.[/green]
=/\=Affirmative Lt. Glad to see your persistence in the matter. I like that. See you soon.=/\= The communication link was closed between both of them and now Halthor had to get some things in place for this escort service. Thinking about them an escort for the professor had to be well laid out, and properly acquainted with everything the professor had done in the previous years.
With this in mind. Halthor got one of his security teams together, and was choosing which candidate among the team would be a likely individual to handle the job. Looking around Halthor spotted one of the vulcan officers in his team. He was a Lieutenant, in fine shape, and excellent starfleet work accords. His name was T'Viol. Halthor proceeded through the team, and called out Lt. T'Viol's name.
"Lt. T'Viol, front and center. I have a important task for you. You better be up for it because your starfleet records show the same of your distinguished ability to handle jobs on star fleet ships." Halthor liked the Vulcan and gave him the PaDD.
"It is a interesting task sir, and I will be able to handle it to my ability" T'Viol answered.
"Good, make sure you get another one of the members of this team you think would be substantial in handling this duty and report back to me." Vander replied.
"Yes, sir!, I already have the perfect person for the job. Ensign Langley. I've been working with him on tasks on missions so far in the security detail and I feel he will handle the job with tip top performance."
"Good to hear, make sure both of you are ready and for the rest of the security team, I want you to continue training, your time will come soon enough." Vander motioned then looked around to find Lt. Rose enter through the Security Office.
Crystal entered the Security Office where she found Commander Halthor just dismissing two of his staff. His earlier words were rolling around in her head.
That would be splendid Lt. see too it that your here early and prompt I don't want the Professor to be of on his own schedule, and to have himself wondering around the ship tampering with our own things, we wouldn't want that to happen now, now wouldn't we.
It wasn't that she though Professor Hartti would be out to cause trouble it was that every scientist she had ever met had a tendency to fiddle and a starship would be almost irresistible.
"Commander, I've been thinking. If we give the Professor some limited computer access and I allocate him a bit of lab space we should be able to keep him away from anything we want to." Crystal paused for a moment. "The Professor's field is weaponry: usually high energy, radiation or both. I've been reading up but, phaser rifles aside - they're going very well incidentally, it's not an area I know too much about. I'm sure I can convince him to give my staff and I a lecture to take up some more of his time. Also I would warn your team to be prepared to be talked at, and probably incomprehensibly, a lot."
Tag: Commander Halthor
Crystal gave a wry smile. "I know you've been given copies of a lot of the Professor's work. Shall I translate for those who don't speak old-high-physics journal?" Crystal gave a slight laugh, she was desperately hoping that she wasn't making the Commander feel embarrassed about a lack of understanding. Science articles were often deliberately obscure and from what she had read Sagan Hartti's were very murky.
She called up a document and set to work giving the necessary explanations, she could tell that the CTSO was impressed with some of the weaponry Professor Hartti had designed.
"Very well thought out, Lt, I like what you have proposed in the matter, and it is dully noted, I will allow the Professor to what you call limited computer access and a bit of lab space. I believe with your idea he may well be handled in the best manner possible without having to go all over the ship doing as he pleases. It sounds like you have an interest in the professor that is on his way, does he do anything with the fields you work in. If so, you may know more about him than I do, and that could prove to be beneficial in helping me with getting a better escort team gathered for him and the appropriate access levels on the ship." Halthor replied feeling a better understanding of the matter at hand.
"Yes, please do" Halthor was getting interested in the professors research so he had compiled some logs in the PaDD's he had with him, and Lt. Rose was so kind to take some of the work off of his shoulders for the time being. As it was going to be rather hectic in the long run. Halthor meanwhile thought about what he could do before the professor arrived so that everything he had done with the training detail in the security office was in position with the Captain's request.
While the two of his security officers had been getting reading Halthor managed to take some time to look over what Professor Hartti had focused on in his studies. It looked rather complicated, but with a bit of help and translation from Lt. Rose everything was going according to plan.
Crystal was still going through research papers, the Professor had done a lot of writing in the last fifty years or so. It seemed that his original field was communications but that had changed to sonic weaponry and then to progressively more and more lethal forms of radiation and energy. It made Crystal feel a bit uncomfortable. It was a debate she and her friends had often had back at university if there was a war on would you work on weaponry for your side?
Crystal had concluded that she thought she would but would have no way to know with their actually being a war.
She had organised some space in an axillary lab and arranged for one of her staff to be around should the professor want something else.
She and the CTSO went over the specs for the Tauri Burst, something that made Crystal wince even more, and then set up preventative measures for every form of access they could think of. Nobody was going to get at this weapon.
A while later Crystal said her goodbyes to the Commander and headed off to check on Tonja. She found the ensign in the middle of writing a formal letter of apology to Lt Biers. The counselor seemed to have explained the situation to her and Tonja seemed okay with it. She asked Tonja to rejoin the phaser project and the ensign agreed.
Crystal still felt worried by Tonja's attitude but she had been pronounced sane so there was nothing more Crystal could do but she was still intending to keep an eye on Tonja Erikson, or at least as much of an eye as she could spare.
Crystal grabbed some food and then hit the lab. She had work to do and intended to create some sort of reward for her hardworking volunteers and that was before the Professor came on board. She doubted there would be anything requiring her attention until then but you could never tell.
By noon of the following day, Tiberian was on the bridge and in the middle of his sventh coffee of the day. Other people might have called him an addict, but Tiberian would never say anything like that, particularly about himself anway. He sat in the centre seat, the Captain being off duty, and used his console to run last minute system checks, desite the fact that nearly a dozen of everything had been run since they had found out that shoreleave would be ending. A crewman came up to him, came to attention, handed him a padd, and then departed round his other side.
"Alright then people" Tiberian announced as he came to his feet "All station personnel have disembarked, and all Olympia crew are present and accounted for. Let's get this show on the road" The bridge crew scurried to their stations, and the degree of chatter quadrupled as they made ready to get underway.
"Take us to indpendent power if you please" He announced "Seal all bulkheads. Disconnect all external supports and couplings, and start up the main engine driver coils"
Outside of the ship, the docking pylons that had held the ship in place retracted, and the long cables thaqt fed the Olmpia power popped out with a spark, hanging limp in space. The Olympia ducked, just for a moment, and then steadied as her own engines levelled her off.
"Clear all moorings, and hail the dockmaster. Request permission to depart" Tiberian stood and waited.
"Dockmaster replies sir" the ensign at ops told him "Permission is granted, and we are wished fair winds and fortunate currents"
"My compliments to him. Take us out, one third impulse, and speed to warp five once we have cleared the system. What is our eta at the secure storage site"
"Computer predicts at beign five hours before we reach the secure storage site" He was informed.
~About five hours later~
"We've arrived at the secure storage facility sir" the ensign at ops told Tiberian, causing him to lumber to his feet. The journey had been relatively uneventful, and Tiberian was now becoming glad that they were well underway.
"Open hailing frequencies" Tiberian ordered as he straightened his tunic. The screen immediately went from it's view of the stars to a view of a lab interior, the central figure in the screen being a middle aged woman in civilian clothing.
"Good afternoon, I am Administrator Gromi Lathsan, civilian overseer of this facility" the woman pleasantly introduced herself.
"A pleasure madame, I am Major Tiberian Wong, First Officer of the USS Olympia. We are here to escort Dr Hartti and the last Tauri Burst to be decommisioned. Would you care to send our regards to the professor, and inform him that he may beam up at his leisure. Could you also please relay us the location of the Tauri burst for transport"
"Of course Major, the information will be relayed immediately. Thank you for you attention, Lathsan out"
"Alrighty then, let's get this sorted. Major Wong to Commander Halthor, we've arrived at the storage facility and are in the process of getting ready for the beam up. See to it that the security and storage area are prepped, and that Commander Tan and Lieutenant Rose are aware of its arrival. Use all the support that you need, Wong out"
"Wong to Captain Smith. I'm sorry to bother you sir, but we're at the storage facility, and Doctor Hartti is about to beam up. Would you mind meeting me in transporter room one to greet him"
