Josh went running through the Starbase waving at half the people that he passed. His last mission had been good fun, but he was glad to be home. And this definitely was home.
He reached the main food area and had to slow down due to the number of people there. Over in one of their old favourite bars he saw Carrie talking to Ed and Sam. He went over to join them.
"Josh!! You're back too!! This is great. A few hours ago everything was quiet." Carrie seemed ever so slightly hyper; it was almost a surprise that she wasn't bouncing round the room.
Ed grinned, "That translates into 'The Vesuvius only just got in too' in case you weren't sure."
"That explains it" Josh replied, "Although where is everyone else?"
Carrie temporarily looked a little annoyed, "Pete and Lara are still working. They switched shifts so that they're always off work together. Although it means I hardly see them now."
Josh nodded in acknowledgement. It was bound to happen some day. He looked between Ed and Sam, hoping to have his question answered without actually asking it. He was in luck.
"Sickbay on the Vesuvius." Sam said suddenly. "Her legal guardian is in there still unconcious. Although apparently they can revive her soon."
"Ah. Okay... So what's anyone been up to lately? It's been weird not seeing you guys..."
"She's going to wake up soon, isn't she?" Lucy asked. She's calmed down a lot in the journey back to Bellicose, but was still nervous.
The doctors nodded, "Don't worry, she'll be fine. And hopefully she'll be out of here in time to enjoy some shoreleave."
Lucy looked a little happier with that. She really needed to talk to L'Ola. It could be a long time before they met up again, and the younger Kanz hadn't really made her plans public. She hadn't really felt the need to ask anyone's permission to do anything in a while, but this one time she really wanted her sort-of-mother to be her real mother.
The door to sickbay opened, and Lucy was surprise to see Nick walk in. She wasn't sure why he was there, but would have been happy to talk to anyone at that moment. Unfortunately it had been so long since they'd had a proper conversation she wasn't sure what to say. So she just sat and stayed quiet; feeling far more insecure than almost anyone could guess.

Sonak walked the old admiral towards the docking bay of the ship, while chatting softly with him. She had really enjoyed his presence on the two missions he'd accompanied them on, and the only thing she regretted that neither mission had been a quiet one, or that he had been able to enjoy a bit of relaxation. Yet the Vulcan commanding officer noticed that Admiral Hepta had changed, he was no longer the sullen old man that had come aboard months ago. He now carried himself with dignity anew, and he even seemed more alive than before.
"It was a pleasure having you aboard admiral," she said to him, as they crossed the hatch that lead them towards Bellicose station. "I certainly hope you have enjoyed yourself, despite the nasty situations we have gotten ourselves in. At least you got to see the many things this vessel is capable of." She smiled softly and she could see that the human still found it a somewhat odd sight, even though she had at some point explained her somewhat odd behaviour - for a Vulcan - to him. "Anytime you need to catch another ride, or are looking for adventure, you are quite welcome to come along for another mission," she continued.
Sonak waved him off, and then walked back towards the ship. Though she knew she could probably use some rest and relaxation as well, she still had to go through the orders of the day. Once she stepped into her readyroom, she grunted at the sight of the stack of PADD's that was waiting for her. With a sigh, she picked up the first one and skimmed over it. "New crew arrival," she muttered, but then smiled. "Second Lieutenant John M Brandy and Doctor Phloyd Hedin," she read aloud, "now why am I not surprised?"
She tapped her combadge. "Lieutenant Brandy, Doctor Hedin, please report to my readyroom," she called, musing that she might as well give them a proper welcome aboard, even though they had come aboard earlier.
<Brandy/Hedin>
Once she was done talking to them, she excused herself. "I have to visit my first officer in sickbay," she said solemnly, "Doctor, walk with me please. Mr Brandy, go and enjoy your leave." She waited for Brandy to leave and for Hedin to catch up with her. "How is she doing doctor?" she asked quietly, "has Commander Martens been informed of her condition yet?"
While they left the office, Sonak picked up the next PADD to read on the way to sickbay. "Ah, I see Jatan has decided to resign his commission now that you are aboard," she commented towards the new CMO, "I cannot say I blame him. He has always said that he wanted to spend more time with the children, and with John Caldwell being a fully qualified doctor now, and your presence, he feels he can safely do so now." She looked up at the new CMO. "While I feel sorry for you doctor, for losing a good doctor on your staff, I believe you may always call upon him should his services be needed."
While walking towards sickbay, they encountered Ensign Mira who seemed to be on her way to sickbay also. "Not going to enjoy your leave ensign?" Sonak querried, "you of all people should take your leave. Yours is one of the most tasking positions on a ship, and I speak from experience ensign. I assume you are on your way to visit commander Kanz, but after that you are to get out to Bellicose and have some fun. Drag Commander Jared with you if you need to. Oh and Commander Jacobson could use some leave also. Perhaps as counselor you could make it an order?"
Sonak winked at the Bajoran counselor. "Naturally, I could too, but myself and the chief do not get along too well. I doubt he will take kindly on such an order coming from me."

The duplicates had finally been cleared out of Nephi's office. It had been agreed that the Engineering duplicates would have their memories erased, though only for the areas related to identity. They would be re-taught at a special facility, and hopefully one day make useful contributions to Starfleet.
Nephi sat back at his desk, thinking about what it would now be like having a copy of himself running around. He should probably tell his parents. He then got to work, looking over the repairs that needed to be done. Why did Sonak have to shoot up two of the modules? Did she think he liked such massive jobs? Well, in truth he did somewhat. He liked the feeling he got when it was all done.
Looking over top of the PADD in his hand, he noticed a message was waiting for him. It was from Omicron Shipyards. He sat up, and opened the message with interest.
It was from the Commanding Officer of Omicron Shipyards. After his performance on the challenging missions he was put through, and the repair and maintenance jobs he had managed to pull off, they were offering him as a position. They wanted him to be Deputy Director of Repair and Refit.
"Computer, locate Commodore Sonak," he said, needing to discuss this with her.
"Commodore Sonak is in Main Sickbay," was the monotone reply.
One of the things he would do at Omicron Shipyards would definitely be to improve the Computer's voice. He stood, and after downloading the message to a spare PADD, left for Sickbay.
Along the way, he had to sidestep frequently to get out of the way of his repair teams. They would have quite willingly made space for their Chief to pass, but he wasn't the type to have them do that. His interest was peaked by a new Mark of quantum torpedo that was being rolled down a corridor. He would definitely take a look at that later.
He entered Sickbay, noticing the new Counsellor was present. He hadn't talked to her yet, but now doing so probably didn't have much point to it. He waited for a break in the conversation, and approached Sonak.
"Commodore," he began, "I've been offered a promotion. Omicron Shipyards wants me to be the Deputy Director of Repairs and Refit," he said, handing her the PADD with the message.

Sonak turned as she heard her CEO's voice behind her. "I was expecting this," she replied, almost sadly, "but despite your ah, minor transgressions aboard the Vesuvius" - here she smiled ever so slightly - "I believe you deserve this promotion and should most certainly accept it."
She beckoned Nephi to follow her. "When will you be departing?" she then asked, getting then and there the idea to throw him a farewell party. She also knew that with Nephi's departure, her CNO would jump at the chance of returning to engineering, his roots. ~and O'Malley will again be overpassed~ Sonak mused ~I wonder how she will take this, as it is the second time now. However qualified she is, Nick is still the more qualified person for the position~
"Have you spoken with Commander Martens yet?" she continued aloud, "I am certain that he will be jumping at the opportunity." Then she looked at the unconscious form of her first officer. "Walk with me commander and we shall find Nick and discuss the matter. Here is not the place to discuss it."
She nodded towards the counselor and the chief medical officer. "I will return later, please keep me informed of L'Ola's condition, and make certain that Lucy Kanz is kept up to date as well." She knew she had just missed both Nick and Lucy in sickbay, as she had known both of them would be with the first officer as much as duty shifts allowed them to be.
"Computer, locate Commander Nick Martens."
=^= Commander Martens is in the mess hall =^=
"I just hope that Kate did not stay," Sonak muttered under her breath, having absolutely no desire to come face to face with the woman who was responsible for her bondmate's death, and several murder attempts of the lives of her family and herself. Not too much later, the two walked into the mess hall, and indeed found Nick in the company of his ex-wife.
"Commander, do you have a minute?" Sonak asked, pointedly ignoring Kate, "alone please." Nick followed them a few paces away from the table he had been occupying. "Commander, Lieutenant Commander Jacobson has been offered a position in Omicron which he is planning to accept. Am I correct in assuming you will be putting in a transfer to engineering?"

Once Sonak stepped into her readyroom, she grunted at the sight of the stack of PADD's that was waiting for her.
Hedin was in the Security Chief's office, in the midst of completing his after-action report to Starfleet Security and checking last-minute details with the ship's security staff, when the call from Sonak came through. Giving an apologetic smile to the security officers, he politely excused himelf and headed for a turbolift. As the cab carried him forth, Hedin took a few precious moments in a hectic day to close his eyes and practice a familiar old meditation technique that he had first learned from a Tibetan hermit some decades back; it always seemed to rapidly clarify his thought processes whenever they became cluttered with minutiae. By the time he had arrived at the captain's ready room, he had caught his second wind, and his old confidence had emphatically returned. It's high time that I looked up my mentor he thought. The hermit's tutelage had helped him on countless occasions before, and the teachings were no less helpful to this very day.
As he reached to press the door chime, Hedin was slightly startled to nearly collide with the Marine officer, Brandy, marching out of the ready room in the martial manner that he conveyed so well. The Marine apologized for his haste, which Hedin dismissed with gregarious `think nothing of it`, and indicated that the commodore was ready to see the doctor now. Hedin had never been particularly fond of military types, finding them to be frustratingly inflexible at times, but his reliance on their efficiency so many times in the past was certainly undeniable. He just wished they could exhibit a little more...compassion...than they were frequently willing to.
Mr. Brandy certainly seemed to be typical of the soldiers he'd known, but to be fair, Hedin hadn't really had a chance to know the man much at all in the few hours since they had met. There was no reason to pre-judge him, and indeed, the consideration Brandy had recently shown to the alien intruders captured had impressed Hedin. Brandy and his team were well prepared, quite versed in field trauma, and had served admirably as an improvised medical team during their survey of the ship for injured crewmembers and intruders. Hedin saw to it that Brandy and his team had been commended in his report to Starfleet Security, and made it clear that he considered their assistance in the takeover crisis to be invaluable.
Commodore Sonak welcomed him with a somewhat tired voice and smile, which would have been no surprise but for the fact that this was a Vulcan smiling and showing her fatigue, if only slightly. However, he now remembered from the personnel profiles he had reviewed upon his assignment to this mission that Sonak was decidedly unlike many Vulcans. Hedin had occasionally met such Vulcans, unencumbered by the usual strict suppression of emotion in daily life, including the only Vulcan he had ever seen laugh out loud, some revolutionary type at a backwater settlement on Nimbus III about a century ago. Since that time, he had met a few similar, if less extreme examples of what some called `passionate` Vulcans, though the commodore was anything but heedless of her people's traditions, if the Starfleet files on her were accurate.
As they conversed, Hedin began to warm up to the woman, getting the impression of a tough commander, a concerned leader, and devoted mother. Whether such impressions were strictly accurate would be something he could determine with time and experience, but Hedin's listening skills had not often pointed him wrong, and his experience thus far on the Vesuvius definitely had done nothing to dispell them. As Hedin shook hands in grateful acceptance of his new CMO posting here, he found himself looking forward to the future with an excitement he hadn't really felt since his first day out of the Academy so long ago. Back then, things hadn't gone quite as he expected or wished, but since that time, many things had changed. Today, he was a much different person, and there were much more solid reasons to anticipate good things ahead. He had very few of the immature illusions he had as a young man; his hope was grounded in a firm grasp of the possibilities.
Once she was done talking to them, Sonak excused herself.
"Commander Kanz took a considerable blow to the head and has suffered various minor contusions in the extremities, but the damage in all could have been much worse. We're lucky we got to her when we did; I want to say just how much I appreciate your letting me take that first aid team around the ship. The injuries are healing nicely, though she's going to require observation in Sickbay for the rest of today, then recuperation on her own for at least three days, limited to light or no duty for that period. We informed her closest relation aboard, Lucy, of all this, whose fears we were finally able to calm. We asked her to let any other loved ones know, and she promised to inform Commander Martens."
Hedin rubbed his ear in a gesture of habit, indicating his immersion in thought. "I would welcome Doctor Reckus' expertise anytime, should he be available. I've read some of his mission reports, and would regret not having him in another crisis situation. Still, I shall do my best to succeed him; to try and replace him would be futile."

The room slowly came into focus. The first thing she noticed was that the pain in her head was gone. The next thing that she noticed was that she was in sickbay. And then she saw that the room was fairly full. L'Ola decided that any attempt at sitting up would be promptly stopped by medical staff, so didn't even bother trying.
"Umm, would someone care to explain what's going on?"
Everyone in the room turned round, "You went unconscious again" Caldwell offered.
L'Ola groaned, "How long was I out this time?"
"You don't want to know. Now you're being very sensible to stay lying down. So don't try to move. And I've told our new CMO here how fond you are of getting knocked out, which means faking your way out of here is not an option."
"We have a new CMO? Oh hi, I'm the First Officer. As soon as you let me I will introduce myself officially."
Hedin looked down at her, "That could be a while."
L'Ola thought for a second, already getting bored of lying down. "Umm, at some point would you mind letting Lucy know I'm okay. She probably won't care but I just want her to know."
She then closed her eyes, and in true sickbay tradition failed to fall asleep. "Okay, so that won't work. Feel like talking about anything, Doc? I'm kinda bored here, resting sucks."

After the recent events and the trip to the starbase, Brandy decided to look around the ship after he found his quarters. Brandy had studied the layout before his mission to help retake the ship thoroughly, but he desired to explore and see the ship with his own eyes. He was really fascinated by the multi-vector attack mode. As Brandy explored the ship his mind explored the possibilities, he wondered about his life there and how it might turn out; his military side could not help but plan strategies for possible situations on parts of the ship, but all in all his thoughts where peacefull.
After Brandy had explored a majority of the ship it came to his attention the Commodore wanted to speak with him. Brandy felt this to be a little awkward but figured she just wanted to size up all her new officers.
Soon after Brandy stood center of the ready room, he figured the office to be a little unnerving for some reason of which he could not explain. To his surprise all she wanted was to greet him. He did realize that he really had not even introduced himself to her properly and that the only real time he had even seen her face was looking at it through his gun site.
Brandy stayed in the ready room and conversed with the Commodore, he new she was "getting a feel" for her new officer, what any good officer does. After a few minutes their conversation was over and she dismissed him to enjoy his shore leave. He had barely gotten to the ship and already was off to shore leave, Brandy felt a little undeserving but figured it made up for the lack of leave after his graduation.
Brandy left the ready room, he bumped into the Doctor and after quickly excusing himself and a reply from the Doc, Brandy left to his quarters to pack a few things. Brandy was going to head off to his moms house; he new she was on leave her self and though this to be a perfect opportunity to see her.

As the crowd dispersed, Caldwell went to the office to make out reports, while Hedin quietly tended the bio-scanner next to Kanz' bed. "Why not? I always enjoy a good conversation. That's one thing people have always pointed out to me; in fact an old shipmate of mine on the Sacagawea called me `Buzz` after, as he put it, I `buzzed` in his ear too long during a particularly dull assignment. Feel free to call me strange names if I start doing something similar."

After a while talking with their new CMO, L'Ola had decided to sit up. She had come to the conclusion that she was uncomfortable lying down, and it therefore wouldn't do her much harm.
To her delight, and surprise, she was not told to lie down again. Nor was she told to be careful. She made a mental note not to push her luck, and simply changed the topic of conversation.
One of the doors to sickbay opened and a relieved looking 17 year old walked in. "So you decided to wake up then? It's about time too."
Lucy went over to sit on the end of her sort-of-mother's bed.
"How's things, Luce?"
"Okay I guess. Just finished my last work experience shift. Have to go sign off at some point, but mostly finished."
L'Ola knew what that meant, "Shuttle tickets came through then?"
"Yup. As of tomorrow I am officially having fun again. Not that this hasn't been fun but... well you know what I mean."
And she did know. The two Kanz girls had a very strange relationship, usually somewhere between friends and mother-daughter. Although they could actually be proper friends...
"Wait there, don't move" someone shouted from down the corridor.
Sam froze on the spot, and was nervous until he turned round to see Jason waving at him. "You know normal people just say hi."
"Since when am I normal? Anyway, I just wanted to talk to you." The pair started walking together down the corridor. "See, I heard on the grapevine that you haven't been too happy here, and was wondering whether you were going to stay."
"Wow, people talk a lot around here. I was going to leave..."
Jason could tell there was something more, "But...?"
"But I hear we have a change of command in engineering, and you really can't tell whether you like somewhere after one mission can you?"
"I am glad to hear that. Now if you're not in too much of a hurry, Ed and Jamie have headed down to the holodeck. I believe you're invited."
Jason walked off down the corridor to do that now weirdly familiar task, look after his daughter.
Lucy clutched the PADD tightly as she went around the ship. With a little help from the computer she tracked down Commander Jared. "I need my leaving forms signing off."
"When do you leave?" Jared asked, taking the PADD from her.
"I'm spending tomorrow morning with my friends from the starbase, then leave early afternoon. Should be fun."
Jared handed the completed forms back over, "Good luck, not that you'll need it."
"Thanks," she replied, "Thanks for everything. I'm sure I'll see you again soon."
And with that she turned round and headed off to the holodeck.

Post by SA. Tettares Hepta [Ret] on Jan 3, 2006 21:19:31 GMT
-¦- Scene: USS Vesuvius-A, Docking Bay -¦-
Hepta carried a bag of mixed feelings with him as he followed Commodore Sonak to the Vesuvius' docking bay. It was time to leave, but part of him wished he could stay. He came aboard a few months ago feeling rather miserable; now, he was happy once more. He'd been useful again, other than being a living relic at receptions and banquets for other people's enjoyment and moments of glory. Incredible how happy some people could be just by sitting next to him, or how proud by a mere handshake. He snorted. If they spent a tenth of the effort they put into meeting all those so-called celebrities on achieving something of their own, the Federation would be paradise by the end of the year.
That was one thing he definitely liked about the Commodore and her crew. They treated him with the respect due a man of his years and accomplishments, but no more than that. They offered to help him when they thought he needed it--which was not quite as often as he thought he needed it--but they never imposed. He was pretty much free to do as he pleased, and so much the better that he'd been able to help them a couple of times.
<snip from Sonak> "It was a pleasure having you aboard admiral," she said to him, as they crossed the hatch that lead them towards Bellicose station. "I certainly hope you have enjoyed yourself, despite the nasty situations we have gotten ourselves in. At least you got to see the many things this vessel is capable of." </snip>
"Which, thankfully, also included the excellent skills of your medical staff." He was near death after getting shot by his double, and even nearer after his trip to Mercury's bridge. In truth, he never expected to get that far, let alone stand hear today. "Yes, I have enjoyed myself." He smiled. "A great deal. Thank you, Commodore."
<snip from Sonak> "Anytime you need to catch another ride, or are looking for adventure, you are quite welcome to come along for another mission," she continued. </snip>
"Well, I'll be on Bellicose for at least another couple of weeks. Depending on what arrangements we can make with the Bolians and how fast the preparations go at Doroch Moon Station, it may even be months. I'm sure we will meet again, Commodore, and I look forward to that moment. In the meantime, safe journeys to you and your crew."
