It was completely illogical. Since they had arrived on the planet, L'Ola had had hardly any work to do, and almost all pressure had been lifted. And yet she was more stressed out than she normally was. Maybe it was the fact that she couldn't do anything.
Whatever the reasons, she now had something to channel the adrenaline into. After checking with Sonak, she walked on ahead slightly. It allowed her to think a bit as well as check the ground before anyone else got there.
L'Ola stumbled across a small piece of debris, and picked it up to examine it. It was only then that she notice the rather larger piece shortly ahead. Not being either an engineer or ship designer she wasn't entirely sure what it was. However someone else would know...
"It landed upside down," Nick said, "It's part of the nacel impulse reactor."
"Doesn't bode well for getting off the planet," she said.
"Indeed."
L'Ola looked up at him ~ I'm really worried about everyone that was on board ~ she thought.
~ They'll have done this for a reason, most of them should be ok ~
She nodded half-heartedly ~ Guess I'm just not feeling myself at the moment ~
And that was certainly true.

Sonak turned at hearing the Vulcan words shouted at her and to her utter horror saw the second sled disappear under the ice. "Move!" she shouted and pushed the other sled forward with all her might. They just barely saved the sled, but the Vulcan ended up soaked up to her thighs. She forced back a series of shivers and looked back.
The Jonian woman, who had taken up the lead over the Jonian group was bravely fighting the bear-creature. To her surprise she saw Fox was also joining them, though he was extremely pale-faced. To the other side, she saw Nick and L'Ola stand by a large snow-covered object, which she instantly recognized as part of a warp-nacelle. Her breath caught in her throat as she looked at it, fear gripping her almost at the same time.
The small group of people moved on, and Sonak watched as Ana dumped the bear's bloodied hide on top of the sled. She almost gagged in response, and felt suddenly light-headed. Gripping the sled more strongly, she urged the group onwards. Now that one nacelle had been discovered, she believed it shouldn't be too far on finding the rest of the ship.
After walking hours on end in knee-deep snow, even braving a brief snowstorm, the group finally saw a huge object in the distance. Sonak heard gasps around her, as the Starfleet crew realized what lay ahead of them. But it was starting to get dark, and it would be too dangerous to move on during the night. "Break camp!" she ordered, finally sitting down herself.
Sonak sat down on the snow, her first break since hours. She had lost sensation in her feet and legs as the water-soaked fabric had frozen up. She removed her gloves and blew her hands. ~Vulcans are not suited for the arctic~ she thought once more, remembering her adventure with then Commodore Loskene. They had been stuck on an ice planet that had been haunted, and nearly had driven them all insane. It had at least nearly driven Loskene insane then.
"We will move on at dawn!" she ordered, then beckoned Fox. "Can you make us dinner, without sagging us through the ice?" she asked, not quite meaning it as a joke, but feeling relieved at seeing his smile to that statement nonetheless. When Fox moved away, she beckoned the Jonian female.
"What you did was very brave, but also very stupid," she said, "you could have gotten yourself killed." She motioned to the hide. "What are you planning on doing with it?" she asked, paling once more at the sight of it. "Did you also save the meat? I am certain that most of this group could do with something other than fish right now."
ooc: tomorrow we get at VES.....Reman could you get us to find the Jonah by wednesday and get the distress out? We repost the distress call on the hepta once we get the signal to move overthere. Everyone do please read Hepta's new mission from the start, tnx!

When Fox moved away, she beckoned the Jonian female. Fox walked to the remaining sleds, to see what provisions they had lost when one of the sleds disappeared under the ice. It seemed some of the fish they had taken with them had been lost. He started prepairing another fish meal, when one of the Jonians came walking to him with a rather large piece of meat. "From the beast?" he asked, the Jonian nodded and gave him the meat. Not sure how it would taste he still prepaired the meat. Not much later he came walking back to the group giving everyone a choise between fish and meat.

Ana stood up with the help of Nick and brushed what snow she could from her jacket. The bear had caught her across the ribs and she'd hurt for a day or two but would survive, thanks to the thick material which she'd been wearing. "Thank you." she said, speaking in the local dialect, and checking for any minor wounds at the same time. She made a face the dead bears stench surrounded her due to having been in close quarters with it and now being covered with its blood.
<Tag Nick>
Ana muttered noting a rip in the sleeve of her jacket and the red stickiness beneath. "Dammit" she muttered as she checked out the rip and the wound. After deciding it was nothing serious and that she could take care of it once camp was made she moved away to work on the bear carcass. Their party would have fresh meat to eat for dinner.
She’d watched the others often enough to know that Sonak didn’t eat anything except fish so sent one of the other Jonians off to catch some fish as well, with a word of warning to be careful of any more creature encounters and thin ice. Ana wasn’t in the mood to lose anymore people.
As she worked on the bear, cutting it up into strips to be cooked for dinner tonight as she listened as the others talked. She knew that their finding was not good, whatever it was. She’d check it out after the others were asleep. She dumped the hide and the meat on top of the sled.
When Sonak called out "Break camp!" Ana helped erect several small tents made of animal hides, making sure each one was tight and would keep the cold and snow out during the night. After which she quickly moved to one of the sleds and removed some clothing which was there, approaching Sonak and holding them out to her. “Come with me, you need warmer clothing.” she said, using Vulcan once more.
<Tag Sonak>
Ana waited while she dressed then entered the tent, removing her jacket and inspecting her arm. It didn’t look that bad but she knew the claws of those bears held venom and that she’d have to clean the wound and soon or she’d be in big trouble. This too would have to wait until the others were asleep.
Upon exiting the tent she walked back to the sled carrying the meat and the hide. It didn’t take her long to unload the meat, making sure that it was given to Fox along with several fish which had been caught.
<Tag Fox>
Ana couldn’t help but laugh silently at Sonaks words to Fox. "Can you make us dinner, without sagging us through the ice?"
She was on her way to the outskirts of camp when Sonak beckoned to her. Ana approached and sat down next to her. “Yes Ma’am.” Once again in perfect Vulcan.
"What you did was very brave, but also very stupid," she said, "you could have gotten yourself killed."
Ana heard the truth in her words but also knew that if the bear had attacked none of them would have stood a chance of surviving. “I did what I had to do Ma’am.” she said softly.
Sonak motioned to the hide. "What are you planning on doing with it?" she asked, paling once more at the sight of it.
“I will be saving the hide and cleaning it tonight. We need warm blankets in the cold.” Ana said without missing a beat.
"Did you also save the meat? I am certain that most of this group could do with something other than fish right now."
“Yes Ma’am I already gave the meat to the cook, as well as some fish.” she smiled slightly but groaned as she stretched out. It was going to be a long night for her and she knew it.
“If you’ll excuse me Ma’am I want to get this hide prepared before the sun sets.” Ana said as she stood up.

Jared had not been surprised on his return to the dock after a few days to find that the Batavia had not returned since the sighting of the meteor. It was after all usual for her to act on impulse like that. Jared just hoped someone on the boat knew where to pick up arctic gear and what to do once there. The ship itself was likely to be in bad shape and even sinking into the ice.
So far the priests had been fairly useful in their intrigue in what had happened in their past. The idea that they could uncover the precise history of the divine intervention that had occurred had never crossed their minds. Jared was aware though that them finding out could be the worst thing to have ever happened to them. It might unlock a Pandora's box for them all. Likewise, their religion seemed based on a version of Christianity based about a vague figure who somehow provided a second Messiah figure. If they found out he didn't exist then it would be a terrible thing for them, but then again he may have been a real person like they described.
Now it was that Jared had travelled for several days to a monastery in the hills near to the city. The monks there had the oldest scriptures which gave a better idea of this man.
'Hello, Abbot Jean' 'Greetings to you. I assume you are the Anglique I was told about' 'Quite, I hear you are interested in finding your Messiah' 'Isn't everybody?' 'I mean more literally' 'Well of course, come in'
And so it was that Jared spent some hours closely questioning the Abbot. Unusually, he spoke a dialect very close to French as Jared knew it. Apparently like how the monks on Earth used to speak Latin as standard, these ones spoke the oldest language they knew.
By the end of it, Jared had obtained some crucial but vague information from the Abbot. Firstly, the man's name was Jonah, hence the people being called Jonians. Secondly, he was some sort of angelic figure in that he descended from the heavens. Thirdly, and here the Abbot admitted that texts seemed to stop making sense as they understood it, he was in some way associated with the sky as a fundamental part of himself. Fourthly, and again only by interpretation, he salvaged the race of Jonians from the mountains at a location not too far from this monastery.
A few days more saw Jared, the Priest who had originally accompanied him, two monks, several apprentices, a few peasants and a Jonian engineer at campe near the point in the mountains the holy books gave. One day after some searching, Jared went out for a look on his own for any trace of anything. He had so far been looking for trace of people, but that was mostly due to his desire to protect the locals from discovering anything unwanted. Some hours from camp, he found a mountain tree. This in itself was quite usual, but there was something stuck into its roots. On close inspection, it looked suspiciously like hull plating from the Vesuvius. Yet Jared knew that the Vesuvius wouldn't have started shedding parts whilst on crash course and this was not apparently burnt like it should have been. Not to mention this was old, very old indeed. Walking a few yards away, Jared looked back at the area in a different way. He was looking for something definite now. He found it. It was a trail, although now faint, of broken trees and a channel of rock. It ended at a definite point. Jared went to find the others.
It took a few days of blasting to break throuth the rocks, but one night near the completion of the project something happened. Jared was on guard watching the site when a figure slunk into view. They were probably unaware someone was watching since Jared was sitting up a tree, but they were cautious all the same. Soon, they began to dig as quietly as possible into the hole. It was dangerous work since any cave in would immediately spell their doom so this must have been an act of desperation. Jared silently climbed down the tree and went towards the hole. The person was still there. When Jared was as close as he could be, he saw who it was; Kate Martens. Apparently she had managed to come down to the surface too and given the position she was in was most likely looking for a way to escape without the Vesuvius. Jared picked up a nearby shovel and crept in behind her. Because of the soft earth she had not heard him and only found out about him when he clobbered her over the head with a resounding clang. Jared knew the woman was trouble, but he also knew that the Jonians in the party would be at risk if he asked them to look after her. He took the inert figure and threw it into a nearby river. It floated off downstream on its back. Hopefully she'd wake up somewhere near the sea.
OOC:I hope Nick doesn't mind me doing that to Kate, if you do then just say and I'll edit. Also, am rather busy right now so have posted this to take care of up until midweek time.

“Come with me, you need warmer clothing.” the Jonian woman insisted, and Sonak went with her. She was shivering with cold, and knew she had to get warm soon, or risk passing out. With her previous snow adventure firmly in mind, that was the last thing she wanted to happen. The Vulcan accepted the bundle of clothing from the other woman and proceeded to rub herself warm with one of the hides that lay in the tent, and then changed her clothing.
Sonak knew though that with ploughing through the snow, and the risk of sagging through the here and there thin ice it would also be a matter of hours before she would need another change of attire. While she changed clothing, she kept an eye on the woman; there was something about her that wasn't quite right, but even with her telepathic skill, Sonak couldn't quite read her. She frowned as she saw the red claw-marks, a clear sign of inflammation. The Vulcan wondered if Ana had guessed that she was a healer, and would for now wait to see whether the woman would come to her for treatment, if she wouldn't go to Hedin.
Gratefully she sat down at the campfire and accepted the bowl of food Fox offered to her. Her crew had done a marvelous job setting up the camp so swiftly, though she nearly wished it hadn't been necessary. Yet, the ice plains were dangerous at night, and personally she was virtually blind after the sun set. She was a little surprised at being the first to be given her dinner, though she knew overcooked fish wasn't very palatable. The meat would take much longer to cook, and Fox probably wanted her out of the way by then.
Her former commanding officer and later first officer knew that even the smell of meat would make her sick. So she quickly finished her soup and re-joined Ana, but not after checking with the rest of her crew first on how they were doing. Sonak knew each of her crew would be worried for family and friends, and she wanted to be up and moving before sunrise. "Get some rest," she urged her crew, "tomorrow we will reach the ship."
<resp everyone please>
Once she had done that, she rejoined Ana, who was about to move off. “If you’ll excuse me Ma’am I want to get this hide prepared before the sun sets.”
"But not before either myself or Doctor Hedin take a look at your arm," Sonak said, almost harshly. She was tired and in absolutely no mood to argue about it. Even though she was a commanding officer, she would always remain a healer. "So far you have done a good job at hiding your injury, but if you leave it untreated much longer, you may lose your arm. I doubt you wish that to happen."

[Around the fire with the rest of the Ves Crew]
Ana reluctantly sat down with Sonak when she spoke. "But not before either myself or Doctor Hedin take a look at your arm. So far you have done a good job at hiding your injury, but if you leave it untreated much longer, you may lose your arm. I doubt you wish that to happen."
She was too used to taking care of herself, having been on her own in most cases and not having to depend on anyone other than herself to get out of the situations she often found herself in.
“Yes Ma’am.” she said, speaking once again in the Commodores native tongue, as she settled once more beside her. Ana grew quiet while Sonak worked. Her interest peaked when a hypospray appeared. “What’s that Ma’am.” appearing to have never seen one before. She wasn’t willing to give away her own identity totally to this woman yet.
Sonak looked down at the device in her hand. "This is a hypospray," she answered, "it will inject medication into your system without the need for a needle. It is painless and was invented due to people with fear of needles."
Time to put on her best acting skills. She backed away from Sonak, a look of fear and mistrust crossing her features. “I think I will take care of this myself, Ma’am. I don’t know what that is or who you are and would prefer to care for my arm myself.”
She stood quickly but seemed hesitant to leave the fire. It wasn’t that she couldn’t, but she didn’t want to over play or under play her hand .. just yet. “What are you?” she asked as she backed to the edge of the firelight, her eyes darting around the fire to the rest of the crew. She knew that Sonak could order her to sit, force her to endure whatever it was she was planning. Ana had to pretend to be frightened by these people, by their ways, their speech even though by now she knew too that Sonak too was curious about herself. It was a game of cat and mouse the two were playing.
"What am I?" she repeated, "I could most likely ask you a similar question. You speak Vulcan, yet you are evidently a Jonian female. However, I am certain you will tell me on your own accord. As to who I am, I believe you already know so there is no need for me to tell you." She watched the woman walk away and chose not to press the matter...yet. <tag any Ves Crew>
Once she was able to get away to the privacy of her own tent she relaxed some and pretended to sleep. Sleep, however, was one thing she would not be doing. There were many things she had to do .... care for her wound, investigate the item they had found in the snow, and clean the bear hide as well as scout around the area avoiding any of the strangers who might be out doing the same.
[That night in Camp]
Ana entered her tent almost immediately after the evening meal. The camp was quiet the Jonians working getting food prepared for the next day as well as repairing the sled and the ropes holding the supplies. There was also clothing to mend. The Jonians left the others alone who gathered around the fire to chat and discuss the events of the day.
She opened her pack, which she had kept with her instead of placing it on the sled with the rest of the supplies. She couldn’t risk either the Jonians or the others finding a few of the items secreted there.
First Ana slipped out of her jacket, her arms tingling against the chill of the tent. She slipped the shirt over her head, leaving her upper body bare to the cold. The wound to her arm not life threatening in itself, she knew this but the strangers did not and she had to clean the wound and seal it before the venom from the bears claws set in.
She pulled what appeared to be a rolled bundle of leather, tied with a thong. This she unrolled and spread out the items there. There were several items foreign to the planet and the people. These she only brought out when alone and in an emergency.
Ana picked up the hypospray and quickly pressed it against her neck. She knew that time was of the essence so that the venom didn’t start affecting her. It had already been a long time since the attack.
Once the antidote was administered she picked up the dermal regenerator and ran it over the wound, sealing the skin. The scar would disappear within the next day or two. It had been a close call with Sonak earlier. Her treatment and the appearance of the hypospray a certain sign that she was right about these people. But what ship were they from, why were they here. These and more questions rising with each passing moment.
Ana let out a sigh of relief and settled back letting the antidote and pain killer take affect. Once this was finished she quickly rolled up the small med kit and placed it back in her belongings. Time to go take care of the hide and do some investigating she thought
Ana slipped her jacket back on and picked up one of the other items from her pack which would appear strange to the Jonians but not to the others she figured. Especially after the episode with the hypospray. She tucked the phaser into her pocket and headed out of her tent, careful not to make any noise, picking up the hide on the way. This was her first goal, get it taken care of before it drew more wild animals into their midst.
She moved around the outskirts of the camp keeping just out of the light of the fires which burned to keep the animals away. She could hear what sounded like wolves howling in the distance.

Sonak had been sleeping surprisingly soundly, despite the freezing cold and the draft in her tent. She'd been sharing it with Mira and Kanz, the two women also exhausted from the day's travel. When the howling was heard, however, Sonak bolted upright, her eyes flying over the walls of the small tent. To her it her surroundings were pitch-black, and the Vulcan couldn't see a hand before her eyes.
Her sharp hearing picked up footsteps outside the tent, and she quickly scrambled outside. In the distance, the sky was turning a light purplish shade, denoting upcoming sunrise. Shivering, Sonak went back into the tent and gently shook Mira and Kanz. "Commander, counselor, wake up!" she whispered insistingly.
The Vulcan moved out of the tent again and went to rouse the rest of her crew.
<everyone post waking up please!>
~~ hours later ~~
Sonak gave a strangled gasp as she saw the wreckage that was her ship. "Oh no," she whispered, "oh no, what happened to them?" She shook her head sadly, but her head snapped up as she heard a familiar voice.
"Mommy!" A child came running towards her, her little face evident of the cold she was experiencing. By the look of her she'd been outside for hours already.
"Shanna!" Sonak called back, forgetting her crew and their Jonian company. She kneeled down and enclosed her young daughter in her arms. "Where is the rest?"
Shanna's face fell. "I do not know mother," she replied, her voice small with fear, "I saw daddy earlier, he was helping hurt people. Many people died mother, daddy and Mister Harper and a few others have tried burying them, but they could not get through the ice."
Sonak turned, her eyes seeking out her chief engineer in the crowd. "See what you can do to get power back up," she ordered, "and find me the cause of the crash, even if you have to tear the ship apart to do it. Fox, Kanz, assist Martens in finding the cause, also in Reman's absence, Kanz you try to see if you can send out a distress signal. Or at least contact Reman, I know he has a communicator."
She paused, inhaling deeply but coughed as the freezing air burned her lungs. "Hedin, go find Jatan and see what you can do for the crew please. Brandy, secure the perimeter, and round up any security crewman or woman you can find. Scout the area, and search the ship. I want to know why she crashed and I want to know yesterday."
By now, she realized the Jonian people were staring at them, their expressions a mix of bewilderment and fury. Sonak sought out their leader, Ana, and found her standing with an equal look of fear and fury on her face. "This is my ship," she finally announced to them, "and I need help saving my crew. I am their commanding officer, they as well as you, are my responsebility. Anyone wishing to head back to the Batavia may do so. Anyone having skills that may help us, please join the teams that will match your skills."
<responses please>

The mysterious ship remained still covered by earth so that in many ways it just looked like a high tech cave since entry was only possible through the one hole. As it was, the hole in the ground led into a corridor on the ship; apparently it had been split in two so there was an aft section somewhere or possibly all over the landscape. Jared had sent the Jonians away to avoid cultural contamination. They hadn't wanted to go, but he said it was due to safety issues since there might well be firedamp in the caves. It was in fact as likely as there being a full Klingon battlefleet in the cave, but they didn't know that. One thing that was consistent with the idea of caves was how dark and dirty the ship was. Various animals had made their homes around the parts of the ship which were unsealed. However, there was a large blast door on the far end of the corridor which was oddly easy to open. Most likely all power was long dead. Beyond that were no animals living but many people dead. Wreckage and debris lay all over the floor; clearly the ship had crashed and killed these people in the accident.
It took Jared some time to find the bridge. Unlike Starfleet ships, deck plans were visible on all decks on large wall posters next to the lifts. That could only mean this was a civilian ship, possibly a holiday or a colony ship. On the bridge, one console had a small red light showing dimly in the darkness. Jared looked at it, it said 'reset'. He pressed it. The lights strugged on. Systems that had lain dormant for centuries came back to life. A few fizzles and pops could be heard as some systems failed to reboot. The only reason Jared could see for such a button as a 'reset' one was for reassembling the ship's computer into a colony one. Certainly the MSD made reference to several systems and parts of the ship which were apparently no longer there such as terraforming pods, embryo control and so on. Also clearly missing was the large engine assembly; unlike Starfleet ships, this one used a different power source for ship running and engines. It made sense since the ship was so large. Very prominently was the fact everything was written in French and very much predated LCARS, but not by so much as Jared would expect. Things just didn't make sense. There were too many people on the planet for the survivors to have had all these children in what did not appear to be more than possibly 8 generations. The ship's crash trail was overgrown, more so that could be expected in a little while. Unfortunately, Jared could not find the flight log to tell him what had happened. What he did find was the communication control. Since the systems had been on the top of the ship and the ship itself was very durable they had survived. With the Vesuvius down, Jared decided the best course of action was to send a distress call.
Before he could send it, something occurred to Jared. He returned to the MSD. It had the ship's name above the diagram; Jonah. That meant this ship had to be the origin point of the Jonians. But there were too many and had no memory of the ship, only a vague idea of things. They must have been here longer, but the ship couldn't have been from more than 200 years ago. Also, the ship still had power and human remains all over so the people could not have returned to have salvaged the ship. If a few people survived the crash in the aft section, they must have known about the front but sinply not been able to salvage it. For them to have forgotten would have taken a very long time. Things just did not fit.
Jared pondered this as he returned to the communicator. He found the distress sequence. He wondered what the would be rescue ship would make of the message. After all, it was from a long dead colony ship, not the Vesuvius.
Jared had no choice now but to leave the ship. Anything else would risk the locals finding it and finding out about themselves possibly before they were ready. As he left the hole, he planted some explosives to collapse it after him. After that, he disappeared into the forest. The locals would assume he died in the cave in. Jared himself had to hide, to go somewhere far away to avoid any questions.

She finally found it! It'd taken her a couple days to find it but there it was... or rather there was the mound of dirt and plants covering it. The ships hull was highlighted by the tangled vines and old growth trees, but it was there. Someone was already working at getting the ship out before her. She'd have to return in evening though, too likely to get caught in the daylight.
That was exactly what she did. Her informants had told her the ship, called Jonah, was indeed a colony ship. Only it was one with a teeny little secret. According to Starfleet records it was one of two known ships to have escaped with Khan. It had once held a secret chamber where a handful of augments had been hidden, along with a handful of embrios.
She crouched down and slowly and methodiclly started moving the dirt. Her goal was to attract no attention from the sleeping monks in the tents near by. She slightly sensed someone watching her, but her telepathy wasn't the same as it was before the destruction of the original Vesuvius. So she wrote the feeling off and kept digging. It was about then the shovel impacted her head and she fell lifeless to the ground.
Hours later she awoke with a pounding headache and a soggy cloak. She sat up and felt the back of her head. A large lump greeted her fingers. Now time to regroup...

Fox sat arround the fire with his crew mates. He had chosen the meat for dinner. Taking little bites from it "it tastes pretty good actually." he thought. He wasn't sure how late it was when he finally turned in for the night. "It'll become a long day tomorrow." he thought because they had to be close to wreck of the Vesuvius. <Next day> Fox woke up, it was light outside already, he could hear people break up the camp. He quickly got up and got his uniform on. He walked out his tent and heard they would move on soon to that 'hill' in the distance. Fox started to help with breaking up and after about 30 minutes they were ready to leave. <near the vesuvius> Sonak held her daughter in her arms and finally turned to the crew. "See what you can do to get power back up," she ordered, "and find me the cause of the crash, even if you have to tear the ship apart to do it. Fox, Kanz, assist Martens in finding the cause. Fox nodded and together with Nick he walked to a hole in the hull of the ship, hoping they could get some of the systems to work. "Hope we can find our way in here, now its up side down." he thought when he looked into the darkness inside.

L'Ola woke up fairly slowly. She'd somehow fallen into deep sleep for the first time since they'd arrived on the planet. At least that meant there was some chance of her being alert while they looked for the ship. But if Sonak was hoping for an urgent reaction, she would be disappointed.
Eventually, though, the First Officer struggled out of the tent and looked around. Apparently everyone else had been forced up too, although the reason for that was still a mystery. L'Ola rubbed her eyes and tried to concentrate to see if anyone would say anything useful.
After spending any length of time on a planet it was always strange to be back on board the ship again. This time was no different in that respect, just in every other.
"Hope we can find our way in here, now it's upside down"
L'Ola smiled, thinking about how long it has taken her to work her way round the ship when she first joined. The lengths she'd gone to to memorize the layout meant that orientating herself wouldn't be so much of a problem.
"Are we heading to engineering then?" Fox asked, still a little lost.
Nick nodded, "That's gotta be the place to start."
"Just a thought" L'Ola said after a slight pause in conversation "But maybe I should go talk to the acting department heads. They must have some idea what's going on. At least we'll know what needs fixing that way."
The other two agreed, leaving the First Officer to go off in search of officers.
<Assume that she's gathered together someone from each department. Contributions from your assitants please...>

A couple days had gone by. Nick had worked with his crew and Fox to get the docking latches undone so they had a chance to get at least part of the ship up and running. By now his crew was getting used to opening doors and latches manually. It was good for them, people were getting too used these days to technology. Speaking of technology, so far the only momentous thing they'd accomplished was getting the auxilury generators online. It was enough to get some lights working and a couple replicators.
~~
"You need to eat," L'Ola said bluntly. She held a tray with a small meal on it. He pulled himself out from under a shuttle he'd been working on for a couple hours. They'd recieved word from Reman that he'd found a ship called Jonah but that the signal might not be strong enough. Thats where the shuttle came in. It had enough power to boost the signal.
"Food is overrated. Kind of like floors," he motioned around at the ceiling they stood on. The floor being about 30 feet above them.
"But it's still needed," she countered. He took a bite out of a roll and chuckled. "How's the progress coming?"
"I'll be flying in the hour."
"You sure you don't want someone else to do this?" she asked. Obviously the ship needed it's CEO.
"If this thing falls out of the sky I'm one of the only ones who knows how to get it back up."
"Point taken," she smiled, "well I need to get back to the bridge. See you later."
"Later," he slid back under the shuttle and continued banging away at a couple dented panels.
~~couple hours later~~
The shuttle hovered a few inches off the ground ready for take off. Sonak looked troubled as the Engineer did his final visual inspection.
"I'll be back as soon as I can. I'll pick up Reman while I'm at it."
"Watch yourself. Get that signal boosted and get back here." She said. "Take care of yourself Commander."
"Yes Ma'am you know me," he smiled.
"I know thats what I'm worried about," she teased.
Nick stepped into the cockpit and closed the hatch. The little type 9 shuttle lifted higher off the deck and flew out the now open shuttlebay doors.
~off to find reman now I guess~ he thought...

Sonak ploughed through the snow, carrying her two-year old daughter, holding her close to her own body to provide some heat to the Vulcan child. She would have to find an entrance to the ship, and then find the rest of her family.
From the moment her daughter had run up to them, Sonak had been oblivious to the rest of her crew; she neither saw nor heard them, all she could think of now was finding her family. She knew that she'd probably not hear the end of that afterwards, and she knew that her first task was to reunite the crew with their families and check the rosters to see who was available, as well as see to the burial of their dead comrades. However, she had been through so much lately, including death itself, that she yearned to be with her family.
After spending hours trying to beat the snow, she finally found herself an entrance and Shanna led her towards her husband and children. To her surprise, she found Harper also with them, as well as Caldwell and a few other assistant department heads. She acknowledged their presence, and the only dutiful thing she did then was tell them to meet up with the first officer and have tasks assigned to them.
Once the officers were gone, Jatan stepped up to his wife and quietly took her in his arms, squeezing gently. He felt her sob quietly, something she didn't do very often and he let her cry. Being human, he believed crying was a healthy thing to do once in a while, and it certainly worked relieving. When she was done crying, he held her at arm's length to look at her. The Vulcan looked extremely pale and exhausted, and he knew she wouldn't be any happier when he had to tell her what he should've told her even before the mission started.
It had been gnawing at his conscience, and Caldwell had insisted that he should tell her as soon as possible. Jatan wasn't sure whether he should, but he was certain Doctor Hedin would side with Caldwell. "Sonak," he said softly, "I really don't want to add to your misery now, but it is better to hear it now, than when you are feeling better, once we are back in space that is."
Sonak looked at him questioningly as he gently wiped the tears from her face. "You might want to sit down." Obediently, she sat down and saw Jatan sit down opposite of her. He gazed upon her with sadness in his eyes. "Remember how the Cardassians mistreated you?" he said gently, taking her hand into both of his, "we were able to revive you but there was more happening than either of us knew before you were abducted."
Jatan fell quiet for several seconds, carefully shielding his thoughts from his bondmate. "Sonak, you were pregnant and lost your child. I know we should've told you immediately, but you were in no mental state to deal with it then. I probably should not have told you now either, not when you already have so much to worry about, but it's been playing heavily on my conscience. I was devastated when I heard, I wanted a child of my own with you so much..."
He trailed off, tears freely flowing down his cheeks. Sonak had paled visibly, her eyes filled with sorrow. She leaned in towards Jatan. "I cannot blame your reasoning," she whispered, "and I am glad you told me. Yes I wanted a child with you as well but we have still time. We are both still young." She averted her gaze from him, and looked around in the darkness. "We will discuss this further when we are back in space...I should go out and see if I can offer my assistance anywhere." She paused. "however I do not feel up to it. I am exhausted, and I fear a breakdown if I do not rest now."
Jatan caressed his wife's cheek, then carefully kissed her. "I will go find Commander Kanz, and extend your apology to her. You should stay here with the kids, I will be back soon." With that, the human former CMO went to find the first officer, and explained the CO's absence to her.

{OOC: morning posts are in pink, evening posts are in yellow}Ana had spent the night awake, working on the hide, trying to stay out of the way of those who were guarding the camp while she investigated the object found earlier that evening, as well as other small projects, including caring for her injury. [The next morning] Ana woke early, prepared a simple breakfast and had disappeared on her own recon mission in the surrounding area, only to return just as the group was heading out in search of the vessel which had been attached to the debris that had been found.
She’d recognized the debris and knew that her suspicions were now well founded. Maybe she would indeed be able to get off this rock and back to civilization and finish her mission.
The last few months had left her marooned on the planet. Try as she might none of her communiques had gotten through, until ... last night. [Flashback to the previous night]Ana had been walking a circle around camp, the wolves howls too close, and there were too many of them for her liking. She gripped her phaser a little tighter as she moved towards where she knew the pack would be. She would have to chase them away and find a quiet spot in order to try, once again, to make contact.
She’d hunted around, keeping out of the way of the few who wandered around camp, both Jonian and the outsiders. Once she found a suitable place, out of the wind and out of sight of the camp she settled in, pulling out her tricorder and communicator.
The communicator crackled and a voice came through. The language not English as one would expect but Klingon. The conversation short and curt. But her message had gotten through. They didn’t know of the people whom she’d met on the planet, nor would they come looking for her anytime soon.
She’d given them false information to keep them away from this world for a month or two, this strange group of federation people whom she stumbled upon were now her focus. At least her identity would be safe, her own people would find her missing and presumed dead when they came back to pick her up in a month.[Flash forward to the morning, finding the wreckage of the ship]"This is my ship," Sonak announced, "and I need help saving my crew. I am their commanding officer, they as well as you, are my responsibility. Anyone wishing to head back to the Batavia may do so. Anyone having skills that may help us, please join the teams that will match your skills."
Ana of course would remain and help. Upon seeing the wreckage and the small child she immediately starting issuing orders to a couple of Jonians nearby to erect a shelter and find them dry and warm clothing.
“Of course Ma’am. I will do whatever I can to help.” her words in perfect English this time for all to hear. The time would soon would come where she would have to come clean to all. She could see how distraught the woman was and realized that the children had to be hers. [Later after working to clear wreckage etc]Ana had kept herself busy, helping the crew of this vessel to find their loved ones, those dead, or injured. She watched the leader of this small band with her children. She kept herself with the Jonians, keeping her distance, knowing this was not the time or the place for anything other than for her to remain in the background. Her skills came in handy as she assisted where needed.Ana sat with her back to the wall, the tray perched upon her knees. Her meal cold, the cup in her hands doing nothing to warm her. Her mind going back to when she first became whatever it was that she was at this point.
These people were family to each other in many ways, she was an outsider to both the Jonians and to these people and yet she was so much a part of both groups.
What was she doing, where would she go, or would she stay and continue to live the lie which had become so much a part of her life. These questions and more floated through her thoughts as she watched in silence.

Sonak felt extremely alone, even though she was surrounded by her family, her friends and the surviving crew as well as a group of Jonians. Many had tried to keep her company, but she would have none of it. After a while, even her children had grown tired of spending time with their mother, as she didn't want to play with them, nor tell them her usual variety of stories. Jatan too had taken some distance from her, figuring that she just needed to spend some time alone to sort her thoughts and feelings.
The human doctor had no idea what was goig on in the mind of his wife, as she was carefully shielding from him, her mental barriers up higher than usual. He was extremely worried, but there was nothing much he could do but try to talk to her and comfort her. He guessed that the crashed ship reminded her of her previous ship, and the loss of her first husband. ~she has known too many losses~ he thought as he shook his head sadly ~her ship, her bondmate, two children....even a Vulcan can't take that much grief~
Jatan wandered around the camp, noticing that one particular Jonian female was keeping to herself. "Hello," he called, walking up to her, "what're you doing here all by yourself? Wouldn't you prefer the company of the crew, or even your own people, rather than sitting here on your lonesome? Come with me, I just noticed Fox has made a delicious tea, something that on Earth is called Billy Tea.....it smells strong, but it's really good. Well, come on!"

Ana looked up as the man approached. She’d seen him around the camp, knew him to be the husband to the leader which had gotten them to the ship. She had watched him with her and their children. It was amazing how even after all the years she’d been doing what she was doing, pretending to be someone she wasn’t, something she wasn’t that something so simple as a family together could bring so much doubt. This was one of the many things she had been conditioned against and yet here it was, threatening to cause her to crash and burn.
"Hello," Jatan called, walking up to her, "What're you doing here all by yourself? Wouldn't you prefer the company of the crew, or even your own people, rather than sitting here on your lonesome? Come with me, I just noticed Fox has made a delicious tea, something that on Earth is called Billy Tea.....it smells strong, but it's really good. Well, come on!"
Ana wasn’t really hungry, the food she’d eaten earlier had not sat well in her stomach and she really didn’t want to think about food in any form.
“I’m not really thirsty.” she lied, speaking perfect English. Her body showed various signs of infection. She stood and let out a sigh knowing he would not take no for an answer. If he was like the rest of the Federation doctors she knew he’d see through it in in no time.
If it had been a Jonian healer she could have bluffed her way past anything which would have come up. What she had not let on when she was helping search and clean up their ship was that the wound the bear had given her a few days before had become infected, she’d not treated it soon enough and was now paying the price.
She followed him to where the crew cook had a small area set aside to act as a kitchen. Her movements stiff, each step bringing pain up through her body which she tried to hide. There was no way she was going to let them see her for who she was, blowing her cover because of a bear scratch was not something she planned on doing.

OOC: Backposting slightly, sorry!
IC:
"Mira, set course for land!" Syal was startled for a moment, both at the surprise of hearing her name, and at finding herself still at the wheel. Briefly, she took her gaze from the water in front of her and looked towards Sonak.
The elder woman pointed to the smoking plume in the distance. "That way!" she called. Syal looked in the direction Sonak pointed and was confused. ~Surely there will be people there…~ she thought. However, she kept this to herself, as she saw Donar shake his head too. Apparently, she wasn’t alone in such an assumption. She knitted her eyebrows together in confusion and looked at Sonak.
"Continue course Mira!" Sonak shouted, seeing her confusion. Syal thought it best to do as she was told, and so she quietly turned back and headed for the imprecise coordinates once more.
What seemed like a few moments later, Donar approached her. “There are strange currents and winds ahead. The more experienced crew should deal with this.” Syal nodded in understanding, fiddling with her meaningless earring as she stood alone briefly, utterly confused. ~I’m a counsellor, for the love of the Prophets! I don’t know WHY I’m here!~
She then heard Donar shout to others. “Enri, Jeun, Mishal; we are to take the helm ourselves from now. You better go and rest now; we'll run 6 hour shifts each until we reach the Freije…You shall be paid well for the trip. Anyone who does not wish to go can leave when we stop at Frei-Anglique for supplies.”
She momentarily marvelled at his ability to command the crew so well and then turned away to see where she could be of assistance…
~*~*~
The next thing Syal knew, she was being dragged out of her not-very-comfortable sleep by her commanding officer. "Commander, counselor, wake up!" she whispered insistently.
Groggily sensing the urgency of whatever the situation was, Syal managed to drag herself out of the slumber she had only recently managed to acquire. In the brief moments that she managed to open her eyes, she saw the Vulcan woman get out of the tent, presumably to wake the rest of the crew.
~*~*~
Syal stood watching Sonak attempt to rectify their situation. "Hedin, go find Jatan and see what you can do for the crew please. Brandy, secure the perimeter, and round up any security crewman or woman you can find. Scout the area, and search the ship. I want to know why she crashed and I want to know yesterday."
Syal looked around her, noting the people who were managing to get on with what they had been told to do, and was surprised once again, despite her training. She had, of course, seen much worse things during the Occupation, ~ but at least in that sort of situation, you learn to expect the worst…~ She mused to herself.
Then Sonak said something which truly surprised her. "This is my ship," she told them. "and I need help saving my crew. I am their commanding officer, they as well as you, are my responsibility. Anyone wishing to head back to the Batavia may do so. Anyone having skills that may help us, please join the teams that will match your skills."
Instantly, Syal stood forward. “As you know, Commodore, I have basic medical training, as well as…experience…in such situations. If I can help in any capacity, as well as counsellor, then let me know.” She only hoped her example would inspire the other people to assist too.
"Yes please do so," Sonak nodded, pleased to see that the young Bajoran was eager to help out, whereas earlier on the ship she had felt immensely uncomfortable. Sonak hadn't been blind to that, and had tried to boost the young woman's confidence by letting her steer the ship. Now, she was back to her usual helpful self.
~*~*~
Syal was worried about the Commodore. She had been showing signs of extreme mental stress and anguish, and Syal thought that she needed to talk to someone. ~ I suppose that as Counsellor, that would be me…~ She thought, somewhat reluctantly. She resolved to speak to her at dinner.
Sonak noticed the counselor walking over to her, and huddled closer to one of the campfires, keeping her youngest children close to her, shielding them from the cold. Sevus and T'Kimi had gone with Jatan to see whether they could assist the medical teams. The twins were nearly seven years old, and Sonak now worried whether she would need to bond them, or let them marry freely when their Time came. Sevus would first need to pass his Kahs-wan, she knew.
She looked up at the counselor and motioned for her to sit down. "I suppose you wish me to talk to you?" she started, being a counselor herself she knew that was what Mira's job was. "I am not certain where to start," she said sadly, "I feel alone, and I am worried about my crew. We have yet to hear whether Reman survived, and hope that someone will eventually miss us and come look for us."
ooc sorry for modifying your post Mira......felt to better do that than write a fewline response to your awesome post.

Jared saw from his new little campsite in the trees the sleek shape of the class 9 shuttle pass into the mountains and land in the nearest clearing. Since the trees also overlooked the only path up here he could also see some more of the now very interested locals moving around. Whilst they clearly could not have seen the shuttle, the general interest that had brought them up here made them want to find out what it was. It would take them about 10 minutes to reach the clearing that the shuttle was in. It would take Jared about five.
Those five minutes later, Jared arrived at the shuttle. It was one of Vesuvius's, but whoever had come was not in it and nowhere to be easily seen. Jared knew time was of the essence but that he could not leave and risk some of the locals finding the Jonah unintentionally. Fortunately, the shuttle was a minute's journey from the excavation site. A few minutes later than that, Jared had returned with some boxes on a hand cart. He placed them in strategic positions around the shuttle and the mountainside just above it. Having done this, he ran the wires out to a safe distance away and set them off. For one thing, it would bring the shuttle's crew back to find out what happened...
The explosives worked perfectly. The ones placed under the downhill side of the shuttle rolled it uphill with the minor problem that they also removed the nacelle whilst the uphill ones tumbled several tons of earth onto the shuttle to bury it from native eyes. 'What was that?!?' came a Jonian voice Jared was ready to answer this 'Prospecting for minerals!' he shouted back 'I had a misfire, stand back until I can check everything's gone off.' 'It's not a problem, we're looking for the priests, not miners' the men replied 'I saw some priests going downhill some miles down. I think they were headed back to the coast' 'Oh' was the reply and the men left.
Shortly after that the original question was repeated 'What was that?!?' in English this time 'Cultural preservation' 'You blew up the shuttle!' 'Only part of it. The rest is there under the landslide. It's not my fault you brought it here where the locals would find it. We can't let them know about their past or us so it's not like we could leave anyway.' 'Couldn't you have told them to just leave?' 'Not really. There have been a lot of them poking around here since they thought something of significance had been found. Besides, the distress signal is already broadcasting from the Jonah. All we have to do is keep them away from it' 'I had hoped to boost the signal with the shuttle' Martens explained 'It's a good idea but not possible. The ship was almost entirely buried anyway so we couldn't have linked the two together physically, it was too old to do it another way and besides, the communication system survived mostly intact.' 'What were you going to do with it before the Vesuvius went down?' It was a good question 'First I was going to see what it actually was. Then if we want to hide their history we could have tried to take it with us if it was small enough. If we told them then they would want to see it for themselves.' 'Can I see it?' 'No, I had to rebury it. By the way, why is the Vesuvius's new chief engineer here? Shouldn't you be helping fix the main ship?'

~Fix the ship?~ he thought, he actually chuckled out loud.
"Well my friend if you'd seen how she was when I left you'd know why I'm here."
"That bad huh."
"Indeed. Besides my engineering crew is good at working together without me."
He sighed and looked at the pile of rubble. It was going to take some time to get back to the ship. First they needed to dig out the shuttle, if that too was even possible.

Fox was glad that one of this things they'd had gotten to work were a few replicators. "Finally we can get something else to eat." he thought. Tho they couldn't be used too much. At least not for food, they had to be carefull with the energy still.
He had replicated some things to make tea, which he was now pouring in cups for everyone that wanted it. He saw Jatan and Ana walking his way and held a cup out to them. "Any of you want some?" he asked.
Jatan nodded and took the glass from him. He quickly poured another cup full and held it out to Ana. "It's nice to have something warm to drink in this cold weather."
