After receiving no response Alex said to the most experienced person there besides himself “take over here”, “yes sir” came his response after entering the turbolift he heard “"Byrne to Ens. James, I need you to report to the Bridge immediately, is that understood." “I’m already coming.” He said back. “Deck 1” he said and after a few seconds he was there. “Sir I think I found the diplomats.” He said to Logan. <Tag Logan>

As Logan sat back and watch the Commodore rant and vent at the Romluan, he was waiting for Ensign James to report to the Bridge. After the Commodore retired to her ready Room with Miriya, he stood waiting at the entrance to the tubolift. As James exited and blurted out something about findng the diplomats, Byrne rushed to him to his Ready Room on the opposite side of the Bridge.
Entering the room, Logan swung his hand in a gesture for the new CEO to take a seat. "Ensign, it came to my attention that you felt it necessary to launch a probe in hostile space while under the cover of free-information exchange with a race that isn't to happy with us, AND without clearing a launch with the Bridge? Are I missing anything?", calmly stated Byrne as he composed himself behind his desk.
Raising his hand in a not yet motion, he continued. "Ensign, I was new to this ship not long ago either. I started here in your position, but I knew one thing. Remember rule #2, the CO runs the ship, then to me, THEN to the departments. I have done a few things to a few people here, but ALL of it was cleared by the CO. Called plausible deniablity. Cause if something happens and we have to report it to StarFleet, she is way ahead of the game, and not looking stupid. Ask her sometime about Nick Martens."
"This is a minor reprimand as the cost is small", he continued," I saw your readings and am aware of what you think you saw, so is the Commodore. But that was right after the Romulans shot the probe out of space. Please, from now on, contact me first before making attempts like this again, just so we know where you are at in the game, understood?", Byrne said in a friendlier manner.
Standing up, he offered a beverage to the shaking Ensign. "All's good, but we are a team, and by the way, Sonak prefers to be called Commodore, not by her name on the Comm system, just a head's up. We okay here?"
<TAG James>
Briefing him, he continued, " We are awaiting confirmation from the Romulan Commander about this incident before we can continue scanning the area. I hate it too, but we are on their doorstep this time. Now go, and get me more information from the sensors about the situation with our missing shuttle. usually Commander Fox would do that, but umm he's the one missing. Dismissed."
With that, he rose his hand to offically welcome the new officer aboard the ship and walked him back to the Bridge.

The Bajoran woman shivered with fear as she was hauled away from the group. She glanced back over her shoulder, struggling to get back to her partners who stood frozen in shock. "I don't want to die," she whispered, her voice shaking and barely audible. "Please, I don't want to die, I have a baby."
"Leave her alone," Rick spoke up, taking a step forward, "we won't betray the trust we've gained from the Empire and it's government. We worked very hard to gain it, and helping you will destroy that." He stood a few paces away from the Bajoran, watching as Govan still held her, watching as Govan started to drag her away.
"Please, I'll do whatever you want," the Bajoran begged, "the Prophets will..." She shrieked in fear as she was shoved into the reclining chair, the wall solidifying behind her. Rick and the other diplomats were forced to watch how Govan set to work.
"May her Prophets be kind to her and end her suffering soon," Rick whispered, then shook off Mareen's hand on his shoulder. He sank down the wall and buried his face in his hands. "Oh please hurry up," he prayed, hoping that whoever would be looking for them would show up soon. "I too have a baby," he confessed, "and two older sons. I hope my wife and children found their way to safety. I really hope they did. What about you Mareen, got any family out there that you'd like to be reunited with?"

"How is she holding up?" the doctor's voice was tired, but concerned.
"You asked me 30 seconds ago. No change yet. You said yourself this could take a few hours before we started seeing results."
Marco sighed. Alice was right. His tiredness was distorting his judgment.
"You can take a nap, you know. I'll wake you if anything happens." the nurse replicated some coffee as she spoke. A few months ago, Marco viewed her as an object to be won over. Lately, she has become a person to be valued.
"I think I'll do that."
He stepped into his office. Clearing off the padds and tea cups, he placed his head down. As he was nodding off, the replicator beeped. Marco drearily looked up. The replicator had automatically replicated the tea. He had forgotten to turn it off.
=/\= Computer... end automatic tea replication. =/\=
The computer chirped and the replicator disintegrated the cup of tea in its chamber. Marco put his head down.
A tapping could be heard.
"What is it? I thought you said I should get some sleep?"
"You've been asleep for 1.5 hours, Doctor... and we are seeing results."
Marco jumped to life at the news. His head spun when he stood, but he gained his bearings and moved to the stasis bed the young Romulan was being held in.
The console showing t-cells was blinking rapidly. It showed t-cell production was on the rise, and at a rapid rate. "Just like you expected, Doctor."
Marco was a bit incredulous. "This is how far we got the last two times, although she doesn't seem to have a fever this time. Perhaps this is it." He gave a quick look-over of the rest of her vitals. Elevated levels of antibodies were present, but other stats were within normal parameters.
"I hope this is it. If this doesn't work, I don't think she'll make it." He pointed to the multi-celled organism on the view-screen, that appeared to be swimming in a sea of green blood. In a flip of a few buttons, it zoomed out, and one could see an increasing number in the upper-lefthand corner. It was quite clear that it represented the amount of organisms found in her body, and the number was still growing, although slightly slower. "If that doesn't stop in the next day, we will lose her."
Alice pretended not to hear, sitting at a nursing station taking a bite of her sandwich. Doctor D'Angelo wasn't the only one who wasn't eating his meals in the mess hall. The whole situation had the entire medical team on edge.

Govan had chosen his first victim well. The Bajoran had put on quite a show, begging, pleading, screaming, the usual fruitless attempts at escape. Of course he’d known the woman was a young mother. The files he had on each member of the group listed their families. For the most part, their family or lack of family played an insignificant part in the Romulan’s decisions, but although most of the time he didn’t care, others did, making the family card an interesting factor.
Hours later, after reaching the point where her voice could no longer scream and the woman was going into shock, Govan cauterized the existing wounds before inflicting the final poisoned incision with exacting precision. She wouldn’t last long, and the best way to drive his point home to the remaining delegation was for her to die in the cell with the rest of them. Releasing her from the restraints, Govan forcibly jerked the woman up and threw her through the now intangible wall to land with a thud on the ground before the other shocked ambassadors.
“You’ll all end up like her if you continue to resist, so I suggest you reconsider your positions until I return.” Govan casually announced as he wiped the blood on his hands against the cool walls of the cell. Feeling their stares of hatred and disgust, he once again cut the lights and exited the cell. Turning to see the remaining delegates trying to help the soon to be dead Bajoran, a sneer curved his lips once more. Nothing he enjoyed more than hopeless desperation.
~
The Bajoran was soon dead, leaving an eerily silent cell behind her, and beamed to another room where she was implanted with a small electronic chip. Pleased with his work, Govan moved to the transporter room, where he dismissed the operator and contacted Tanek, whose face appeared on the console moments later. “Tanek, is everything set up for our little gift?”
Tanek nodded and replied, “Yes, Major. Everything should go according to plan, and our agent is standing by in case anything unforeseen occurs.”
“Excellent,” the Major responded. “Inform me of the results. Echal out.”
Activating the transporter, Govan beamed the body of the Bajoran to a small cargo area onboard Ma’Jel’s vessel. Once ensuring that the transport had indeed gone undetected, the Romulan tapped into Ma’Jel’s transporter system and beamed the dead Bajoran directly onto the bridge of the Vesuvius before erasing the log. He wished he could see those Starfleet faces when a badly disfigured corpse appeared out of no where right in front of the Captain’s chair.

The bio-bed next to him suddenly shimmered, and the Doctor found a Bajoran body being materialized. The female was severely beaten, with contusions and burn marks scattered across the body. The scanners declared her dead, but Marco went to work any to resuscitate her. It was of no use.
"Look here," he pointed to the nose ridges, which had been twisted, cut, and some even removed.
"They are a very sensitive area on a Bajoran's body. It's common to see them removed or deranged in torture situations." Jatan acted as if this was normal, but he still had a tint of upsetness in his voice."
=/\= Computer, cross reference with the list of missing diplomats I loaded a few weeks ago. Was she one of them? =/\=
~/\~ Affirmative. ~/\~
Marco's eyes widened at the realization of his discovery.
=/\= Dr. D'Angelo to Commodore Reckus- The Bajoran you beamed down here was one of the missing diplomats. Did we find them too late? =/\=
Sonak responded in the negative.
=/\= I'll do a more extensive autopsy. Perhaps it can tell us more information =/\=
The transmission ended, and Doctor Reckus started reconfiguring the computer for autopsy. Doctor D'Angelo tended to the Romulan child in the mean time, who seemed to be doing better. The invaded organism had decreased in numbers, and in a few hours, she may be able to come out of stasis.
D'Angelo-gamma he fancied. That would be the name of the new protein he synthesized. Of course, to administer it he had to embed it in a sequence of RNA, which in turn was embedded into a bacterial cell of an organism only found on Romulus. For once on this ship he felt useful, and the Doctor was pretty proud of his creation... assuming it would work.
"Doctor, you might want to get over here. The computer has found something strange."
Marco touched the Romulan's console screen, deactivating the display, before heading over to the dead diplomat's bed. Jatan was cutting into the abdomen of the girl, extracting something metallic in nature.
"It's blinking in a relatively slow pattern." Marco noticed. I suggest we put a level 1 containment field just in case.
But it was too late.
On the bridge, the operations console lit up. The ship slightly shook before the inertial dampers cushioned it back to stability. The operations officer on duty called to the Commodore, "We have a situation down in sickbay."
"Describe" she responded.
"Um.. well, the sensors there have been completely destroyed. I'm going to have to reroute the external sensors to look inward. It doesn't look good though. We are missing eight crew members."
"Jatan? Doctor D'Angelo?" she asked.
The operations officer didn't respond verbally, instead lowering his head. They were two of the eight on the list of the missing, along with sickbay attendants and the Romulan child. "We won't know more about their status until we get sensors online."
Commodore Reckus immediately started mobilizing the crew.

‘Well that finishes it.’ Alex thought he had just came up with the only logical course of action he would have to recap. He stepped on the turbolift and voiced his destination, after stepping out of the turbolift and entering the bridge he was just to approach Logan on his idea when something shimmering caught his eye at first he ignored it as he thought he may be seeing things, but then when it got wider and he could fully see it, his mouth dropped it sight of a Bajoran body appering out of transport right in front of the captains chair. As soon as this happened alex moved over to the engineering panel and started pressing cammands. A few seconds later he came up with the answer, “The body was beamed from the romulan ship that’s escorting us.” He said to Logan, then alex pressed his combadge and said “alex to captain we just recived a Bajoran body, and it’s dead.”

Sitting on the Bridge, Logan read the update reports from the departments and categorized them. Thinking that this little escapade was going no where.
Reaching over and grabbing his drink, he immediately jumped up when a transport on the Bridge commenced. Yelling to Kanz, he wanted to know the origin and whom was being beamed aboard. At that moment, Ens. James burst onto the Bridge and ran to the Engineering console and spat out," The body was beamed from the Romulan ship that’s escorting us."
Tapping a button, he muted all of the comm channels as Alex tried to alert the Commodore. "Ensign, all commands go thru me first. Get Dr. D'Angelo up here immediately."
Tapping his badge, "Emergency medical staff to the Bridge, Commodore, we have a diplomat on the Bridge, but you better send Dr. Jatan. All hands we are going to Yellow Alert status.", yelled Byrne.
"Commander Kanz, I need all of the sensor data concerning this report. Ens James, I need you to isolate the beam sent to the Bridge and see if there was a rebound signal. I so don't think that the ship escorting us just sent us a dead body. And I need to know the status of the shuttle with Commander Fox and Captain Maverick."
Turning to the board on his chair, he erected a stasis field around the body on the floor. Initiating a ship wide communication," All hands, I need all department heads to report all findings to me now. This mission has just gotten deeper."
Once he made the announcement, he turned to the Main Status Display Board to see if any other bodies were dumped on the ship.

Once she got the call a body had been beamed into her command centre, she rushed onto the bridge, her baby still clutched to her chest. "Beam her to sickbay!" she ordered, then started calling out several other orders, which would hopefully show them where the body had come from.
She'd seen the woman's face, but hadn't recognized her as being one of the diplomatic party. "Find me that ship," she repeated. Then, worse news came through: Marco, Jatan, Elanna's baby and several other sickbay staff had been beamed off the ship, together with the Bajoran corpse.
Sonak sank back in her seat, feeling defeated and bereft. "Inform Elanna that her daughter has been abducted," she told her first officer, "and call John Caldwell to duty. He will need to take charge in sickbay until we recover our medical team. Also inform the Romulans of our status, and tell them to be careful."
~~
Somewhere on the Romulan vessel, Jatan found himself lying flat on a cold dark floor. Nearby, he heard Marco grunting and also heard two other nurses whisper in fear. The wailing of a child made him crawl forward and he picked the baby up. "Marco? Lessa? Ryan?" he called as he cradled his wife's niece in his arms. "What happened? Where are we?"
The room was shrouded in darkness and Jatan could barely see a hand before his eyes. He also felt there was a dampening field, as he could no longer sense his wife's presence in his mind. The link was of course still there, but it was though she was externally blocked out. At this time he wished he did carry a phaser, but all he had was his tricorder and a pouch with hyposprays. Lot of good those would do right now. "Hello!" he called, "what do you want from us! Who are you!"

The harsh voice of the secondary cell guard rudely interrupted the gentle music drifting through the air. “Major Echal, you are needed in the secondary cell.”
“I believe I made myself clear regarding my feelings on being disturbed…” Govan replied, his voice dangerously low and menacing.
“Uh…yes, sir you did, but our…guests have arrived ahead of schedule.” the guard responded, warily but with confidence in his decision to interrupt.
“Already?” the Major’s queried, his voice betraying his surprise. “Wait, did you say guests, as in more than one?”
“Five, Major, including the target. I am unsure as to the identities of the other four, but there is an…infant…among them.” the guard replied cautiously.
This information stunned Govan. An infant? That had not been part of the plan. Extra hostages were always welcome but a baby of unknown parentage?
“I’ll be right there. Echal out,” the operative replied, already standing and moving towards the door. Obviously he had not been informed of the exact nature of the chip he had implanted in the remains. He had been told that once removed, it would locate the target and beam him to the secondary cell before exploding.
Someone had messed up, or he had been left in the dark for some reason. Either way, someone would be paying for their deception or for their incompetence.
Arriving in the observation room, he looked inside to find four adults and a baby, just as had been reported to him. The child was crying as another hostage was attempting to comfort it. “Report.” he ordered at the senior guard.
“The target is the doctor holding the baby. The other three appear to be medical personnel of some kind. I am...somewhat unfamiliar with Federation rank insignia.” the guard reported, obviously uncomfortable with having incomplete information.
As the Major observed the group, he could see what he believed were medical implements scattered through out the cell. It was as if the chip had just randomly beamed everything in its general vicinity to the Quitox instead of the individual.
Still, they had their target, and a few extra hostages, so no harm had really been done to the mission. “Lock onto any equipment beamed into the cell with them and remove it.” Govan ordered, before hesitating momentarily and adding, “And remove the infant. Beam it in here. I may…require it for coercion later.”
The guard nodded, unfazed by this request. As the transport completed, Govan could hear shouting of some kind in the cell, but he ignored it as he approached the now screaming child and picked it up somewhat awkwardly.
“Keep them under observation, and find out who the other three are.” Major Echal ordered as he left the room with the baby, who had now stopped screaming and was looking up at him curiously. This had been an interesting and unexpected development, but it would most likely turn out for the best...somehow.

<On the shuttle> In the shuttle, inside the Nebula Fox kept scanning the trail, which was getting fainter and fainter untill it finally stopped. There he stopped the shuttle and looked at the others with him.
"What to do now?" he asked while looking at the others. "I do not know." Moraki answered. "It could be the nebula since its interfearing with our sensors." Fox continued. Moraki nodded. "But without a trail to follow we're nowhere." "Lets return and stay posted outside the nebula." Fox said.
Both men nodded. Fox made the shuttle turn and plotted their course out of the nebula along the way they came into it. Finally after what seems a long time of flying they cleared the nebula and stayed there.
Suddenly the console began to beep. It was the Vesuvius requesting an update of their status. Fox looked at Moraki. "Tell them we haven't found Tovan or the vessel that carried him away." he looked at Trey. "And that we lost the trail."
Moraki nodded and did so.
<On the Vesuvius> "Commander Byrne." was called over the bridge. "The Vesuviette has finally reported in. They're posting outside the nebula now. But lost the trail." Byrne nodded in response.

Sometimes being brought up by people who didn't show their emotions had its advantages, and this was certainly one of those times. L'Ola was using all her will power not to scream and start throwing things around. It was quite simply, a security officer's worst nightmare.
She still hadn't found where the diplomats were being held, she was coordinating efforts with people she didn't really trust, the ship had to be ready to go into alert status at any second, the rest of the security officers had been getting restless about being on standby for so long, and then it had all got worse.
How had she let it happen? How could she have been so stupid as to let them beam that device on board? And worse still the Vesuvius' own transporters had carried it to. Now because of her mistakes and lack of preparation there were 8 missing people, included the injured from sickbay. And Dr D'Angelo. Not that she wanted to think about why that bothered her so much.
L'Ola calmed her mind down enough to think and set to work on a plan, anything that would help with even just one of the things that needed solving. Then something struck her from a conversation she'd heard earlier. "Kanz to Ensign James. Did you say you had a way to locate children?"

Getting overwhelmed with all of the transporter activity and missing bodies, Logan was losing count of the personnel on the ship.
'Heck of a first week as FO', he thought. Glancing out the corner of his eye, he saw Ens. James head for the turbo lift, off to do things his way again. Nodding back to Kanz's board, he tried to follow the crew allocation.
After assigning Dr. Caldwell to Sickbay duty, he rushed to the Commodore's side. Once arriving, Logan tried to gather all of the information he could concerning what had just happened. Being on the Bridge apparently has been keeping him out of the loop.
As he received the information of the location and status of the shuttle, he kept that bit aside as he saw the other crew scurrying to adjust to the missing crew.
"What is going on here", he yelled, "Why was the medical crew abducted and why use the dead diplomat to take them?".
As he read of the sensor logs in Sickbay, he used a few tricks to tap into the Engineering database to link the shadows of the transporter fixes to show a pattern to Sonak and Dr. Caldwell. This allowed them to see a faint DNA trace on the outer hull of the Romulan ship flanking them.
Using Fox's tricorder, Byrne scanned the Sickbay and found traces of a transporter signature in the walls similar to the trace signal that caused Tovan to leave the ship.
Turning back to the Commodore, he said," Ma'am, they have been here the whole time. And they know you are linked to the diplomats. How I don't know, but things are going to end now. I want our crew back and the person who has killed the diplomats to pay, one way or another."
With that he headed back to the Bridge to triangulate the DNA traces on the Romulan ship.

“Did you say you had a way to locate children?” “Yes what were you thinking of?” <tag L’Ola> “oh yeah, brilliant!” And with that Alex stepped into the turbolift, “deck 17” he said and after stepping out of the turbolift he had arrived there. After stepping out of the turbolift he went to one of the consoles and pulled the simulation up.
After a bit of tweaking he had successfully found the diplomats, so he called Logan and Sonak “Alex to captain and co captain, I think I may have found a way to locate the diplomats. <Please PM me so I can explain how to do it and then well post again. >

Marco awoke to being dragged by his heal across the room, to where a brute of a Romulan, very muscular and peculiarly large for his race, awaited with what looked like some sort of handcuffing device. The young doctor hadn't regained his senses completely, but he could make out the figure of Jatan across the room being interrogated.
"We have your chief medical officer aboard." the brute said, while clasping the device onto Marco's hands. Instinctively trying to break free, the cuffs gave a rude and awakening electrical shock that seemed to slowly emanate through his body.
"It gets worse every time you try to break free. Nobody has made it past four attempts, so I suggest you hold still until we are done talking to your superior. You are next."
Apparently, they thought Jatan was in charge. It made sense, he held a higher rank than Marco did. Jatan was taking blow after blow, as Marco's vision came into perfection to witness it.
"How... what..." Marco was thoroughly confused. The last thing he remembered, he was lowering the stasis field on the Romulan's baby's bed.
"We transported everyone within the radius of the microchip to this holding cell." The brute was strong bodied, but rather forthcoming in what he felt was an ingenious plot. "We meant to get your Captain... but to get her husband, and the child of the Romulan diplomat... " he let out a deep sounding chuckle, "it's almost better this way."
The chip! That's right! Jatan and he were extracting some sort of device out of the dead Bajoran... that must have been the transporter, and the cause of the burns on his upper torso. Marco winced in pain when realizing the extent of the burns, trying not to jar his hands behind his back.
"Where is the baby?" he asked calmly.
"In good hands. You don't think we would harm our little bundle of influence to get our diplomats to finally open up a bit, do you?"
Marco couldn't think of a response. His combadge was off. He assumed that the others beamed to the cell were the same. There were a few other nurses huddled in the corner, a couple unconscious still. Their combadges were notably removed as well, so there was no hope of anyone finding them. In fact, "where" they were was still a mystery. The bulkheads looked unfamiliar, but that could mean anything. It wasn't like any ship he had been on prior.
"What are you going to do with us?"
"I am the least of your worries." he smiled and turned around. It was clear he was done conferring with the prisoner.
The nurses didn't look injured, and the conscious ones seemed to be handling the unconscious ones. Every now and again a zap of energy could be heard, and Jatan would cry out something unintelligible. Between painful outbursts, one could hear him pleading that although his wife is the Captain of the Vesuvius, she would not tell him the security override codes. It was probably the truth, Marco thought. The Commodore always played close to the rule-book.
Marco slumped back and waited for his turn. He knew it would come... it would only be a matter of time.
Nurse Conyers looked over the shoulder of Alex James. Being one of the few male nurses aboard, it was strange he wasn't seen more often. He was usually found in the science labs running cultures for the doctors. Now that everyone seemed to be missing, he joined Commander Byrne and Mr. James.
"I guess we are lucky to uncover the few nanoseconds of transporter burst before the internal sensors exploded," he commented. He was trying to make conversation while working on one of the nurses caught on the transporter horizon, and was suffering from some sort of trans-misalignment due to it.
Logan and James seemed intent on finding the beam-out destination, and made the assumption, which seemed plausible, that the diplomats were also being held at the same place. But this could be anywhere.
Sonak was already in contact with the lead Romulan ship, trying to work with them to figure out why the Bajoran body had come from there. Conyers noted the aire of feeling throughout the room. Whoever did this clearly were terrorists, with the Bajoran body being sent as a message, showing they are NOT afraid of killing to get what they want.
But what do they want? That had bothered the nurse as well. And what would they want with a bunch of doctors and diplomats?
Nurse Conyers finished his work in the secondary sickbay, and turned to Logan. "It would be much easier to work, sir, if we had main sickbay back online. Is Mr. James working on that?"
Logan swore and slapped the console. His and Alex's promising lead proved to be a subspace anomaly, not a hidden ship at all. This was proving to be more difficult than they thought. Alex James's approach to finding the diplomats proved fruitless.
To Mr. Conyers's knowledge, and by looking at the consoles, there was nothing in the immediate space that showed where they could have been beamed to.
"At least we could help some of the wounded here. Commander Ree'al needs a higher energy source than we were able to shunt here to get his internal organs all back into phase." His brow filled with sweat as he spoke. This was the first time he talked to the First Officer, as a first officer that is, and asking authoritatively for action was not typical in the nurse's nature.
Talking to himself as he helped the rest of the injured, "I hope they find everyone, and they are OK. I don't know what the Commodore would do if..." his patient lifted her head and questioned his statements. "Nevermind... just rambling. Lay back down, you need to keep head still until we get the cortical nuerometer back online in main sickbay to see the extent of the injuries."
This was going to be a tough shift, and from the looks of it, it was going to last a long time. Main sickbay would be online soon, as soon as engineering could get around to it, and perhaps things would run smoother then.
"Hold still," he whispered again.

"I want our crew too Logan," Sonak sighed miserably, "and my mate in particular. Have you and Mr James found yet how they could have been taken from sickbay without us detecting the transporter beam?"
Just then Alex piped up that he may have found a way to find the diplomats. "Find them Mr James!" Sonak snapped, her patience long lost, "Kanz, get down to engineering and assist. Once the Vesuviette docks, call Fox down to assist too!"
The Vulcan was disappointed to have learned that Fox had been unable to find her navigations chief, even though it was quite likely he was just as close by as the diplomats might be. "Hold on Jatan," she whispered, as she rose to her feet. "Contact the lead Romulan vessel," she ordered which gained her an aye aye from Thorad.
The male Romulan from before appeared again, which made Sonak wonder what had happened to Ma'jel. So far, only this Romulan had spoken to her, but Ma'jel had not once tried to contact her. Something must've gone wrong along the way, Sonak mused. "Several of my medical staff, including a Romulan baby have been abducted from my sickbay," she started, "and my engineers have routed one of the transporter sources to you. Would you care to explain how that is possible?"
The Romulan glared down on the Vulcan female before him, and once again marveled at the fact that for a Vulcan she was quite emotional in her responses. "We have abducted no-one," he answered, "we did discover our transporters were used, and we are now tracing the source of that order. It did not come from us. We do, however, have a trace on one of the diplomats. A young Andorian Male was detected on our sensors, the profile matching that of the abducted Andorian aide. Perhaps your engineers can perfect the signal so that he can be rescued? He is the only signal we found. No trace of your medics or the baby."
Sonak sighed. "Thank you commander," she replied, "and my apologies for my harshness. My brother is among the abducted diplomats, and now my bondmate has been abducted as well as my niece. I worry for their safety."
The Romulan nodded and cut the signal. "Mr James, did you hear that last message? The Romulans will be sending you a signal, you are to home in on it and beam that person out as fast as you can. I will be in secondary sickbay to help out the medical teams. Doctor Caldwell can be found in tertiary sickbay. Logan, you have the bridge." With that, the Vulcan swept off the bridge as far as she could. However, the counselor seemed intent on following her, possibly to just keep an eye ion her. As long as he stayed out of her way, Sonak could not care. She had work to do.

As soon as Alex heard all this he thought for a moment, but then he went into action "this is Alex to all engineering teams, Beta team get to engineering, Gamma and Delta teams get to sick bay, Gamma team each one of you will need a flow distributor and an isolinear enhancer so you can redirect the power flow to get everything working, repair the damaged circuits, and then change the power flow back to normal. Delta team you will need an isolinear phase inverter so you can put a dampening field around sick bay so it doesn’t happen again while the Gamma team’s working.”
Then he pressed his combadge and 6 more people entered engineering and Alex called everyone to him, then he started giving everyone instructions. “Beta team you’re going to try to figure out how to get that Andorian out of there an then do it. Alpha team we’re going to figure out where the ship itself is. Alright everybody you have your orders.” Alex said and with that he went to work on building that probe.

How could something so small make so much noise? The baby had cried nearly all night, leaving Govan very tired and very irritable. The Major knew little about medicine and even less about children, but once thing he knew for sure, he couldn’t just waltz the baby into sickbay and have her cared for properly. As far as everyone else was concerned, she was just a bargaining tool to him.
As he crossed his quarters for the several hundredth time that night while bouncing up and down on his feet, the baby quieted, as she always seemed to do when he did that. “Come on…aren’t you tired? I’m sure you must be tired. Unless you’re hungry…are you hungry again? How can you be hungry again?”
The tiny Romulan gurgled up at him and grabbed hold of his finger. Govan was mesmerized by her…her tiny little fingers and nose… He shook his head, trying to clear his mind, stopped pacing, and jerked his finger out of her grasp. She was just a baby, nothing to him. The child’s eyes filled with tears as she began to cry again. “Oh no, no, I didn’t mean it. I didn’t mean it. It’s ok. I’m sorry. It’s ok.”
It took several more minutes for the baby to calm down, leaving Govan to ponder the mess he was in. Who was he kidding anyway? He couldn’t hurt a baby; he could never hurt a child, especially this one. Every time she looked up at him, the Romulan’s heart melted a little more. He’d always had a bit of a soft spot for kids, but it had never interfered with his work…until now.
Replicating another bottle of baby formula that he’d found floating around in the computer files, Govan sat down and began to feed her again. He’d had no idea babies had to eat so much, but she was clearly hungry again. Looking down at her, drinking greedily from the bottle and gazing up at him, Govan knew that no matter what happened, he could never bring himself to hurt her.
Still, he had work to do, and he was going to do his job. What the Romulan needed was someone to watch her, just one person to let in on the secret that she was alive and well, but who? Bringing up the personnel records, Govan decided it would have to be a woman, a nurse or a doctor of some kind to take care of her. Settling finally on one random nurse, the Major opened a channel. “Echal to Jiltan, report to my quarters with a medkit immediately.”
Knowing it would only take a moment or two for her to arrive, Govan placed the now empty bottle on the table, next to the stack of diapers, pink blanket, and large pile of toys he’d replicated over the course of the evening. He needed to look cold and uncaring, like he really did just see her as a tool. Otherwise, his reputation could be ruined. Of course if that happened, he’d have to kill the nurse too.
A few minutes later, the woman arrived, terror evident on her face. “This baby is a bargaining tool. I need her alive and well to enhance my negotiations. You are to care for her here until I return. Do not speak of this to anyone or you will be killed.” he ordered, as the woman nodded, still obviously scared of him. Good.
”Here.” he continued, unceremoniously dumping the child into her arms. “I know nothing about babies. You will make sure she is healthy.” Jiltan nodded again, carefully shifting the baby into a more comfortable position for both of them, before glancing with raised eyebrow at the array of baby items on his table.
Feeling his face flush a bit green, Govan found he couldn’t exactly look her in the eye. “You are to remain here and speak to no one. If she is harmed in any way, your life will end.” The nurse nodded once again, but the fear in her eyes was all but gone as she looked straight at him.
Embarrassed at being caught and finding himself wishing he could say goodbye to the child, Govan turned on his heel and left in a huff, trying not to hear the cries of the child as he vanished from sight. As he headed towards his office to plan his next move, the Romulan cursed to himself knowing that he’d met his match in the form of a little girl no bigger than his forearm.

Logan took the Bridge and monitored all of the actions of the crew during this daunting moment. Stirred by the incoming message of the shuttle, Byrne relieved himself and headed for his Ready Room.
"Commander Fox, report to my Ready Room, once you are on board.", stated Logan to the Comm system.
Sitting down, he turned the desktop computer screen to him and researched some of the sensor protocols. As he scrolled thru the inventory of pallets aboard the 3 vessels, he found a subspace harmonic detector. This unit acted like the sonar aboard sea-based vessels from the 20th century on Earth. These units were able to detect sound vibrations, as well as, the conventional sensors that detected solid objects in space. Based on an old outdated way of detecting radio waves and not rebounding sound waves.
Opening the pallet schematics, he found that a trick that was once was used by Doctor Leonard McCoy could possible be used. By negating ambient sounds like engine noises and crew movements. Using this technology, he could get Dr. Caldwell to bring up a sound pattern of an Andorian heartbeat.
Gearing up a few loose med techs and engineering staff, he allowed himself access into the Main Science Lab and set forth into reprogram a few pallets into listening beacons.
Pulling a few amplifiers from storage, Logan proceeded to instruct the group on his plan. As they constructed the pallet, Byrne started programming the main transporter matrix to remove the original and install the new pallet with out stopping the ship and doing an EVA.
Once he contacted the doctor, he programmed the pallets to create a listening sweep in the lower radio band as to not alert the Romulans. Using the console array in front of him, he created an oscilloscope to watch the subspace area for any sign of the heartbeat within the immediate area.
Congratulating the staff, Logan shook hands with all of them for a good job. As Commander Fox entered the Science Lab, he was aghast at the condition of his personal space. Once briefed, he joined Byrne in looking for a signature of the heartbeat of the Andorian delegate.

Rubbing the back of his neck, Govan entered the observation room for the second holding room and found a scene he’d only envisioned in his worst nightmares. The lights were on in the holding room, as well as two interrogation rooms, the second one the Major had never even considered using. The holographic walls were non-existent, except leading the observation room.
There was only one guard in the observation room, laughing at the interrogation taking place in the first room, while one guard was doing the interrogating and another held a second prisoner in interrogation room two. Control had been lost, and if there was one thing Govan valued more than anything else, it was control.
“WHAT is going on in here!?” the Romulan demanded, causing the remaining guard to jump and turn to Govan with horror and fear in his eyes.
“Major….I….we….” the guard stammered, causing the Major to roll his eyes and grunt in disgust. It was pathetic what they were allowing to wear a Romulan uniform these days. Thrusting the annoying man out of his way to the side, Govan grabbed another control and a disrupter and charged into the holding cell.
The small group remaining in the holding cell cried out in fear when they saw him, and the other two guards stopped what they were doing, just as terrified as the captives. Govan stood silently for a few moments, taking in the three rooms with a single sweeping glance before his gaze settled on the guard in interrogation room one, gripping an electric prod, frozen in fear.
“I don’t recall authorizing any interrogation or movement of prisoners. Either someone who outranks me made the decision for me or this is an unauthorized interrogation. As I recall, I am the highest ranking officer on this ship; therefore, you do not belong in that cell. As the highest ranking guard, the mistake is yours.” Govan kept his voice completely calm and his eyes fixed on the guilty party.
Without hesitation, he fired a single shot, vaporizing the guard instantly. Gasps of shock could be heard from the group of captives still in the holding room. Govan calmly approached the man strapped to the chair, his eyes fearful but determined.
“He was an amateur. Consider this a warning to cooperate.” Govan stated coolly as he detached the straps from the man, hauled him up with one arm, and threw him into the holding cell where he hit the wall and slid down to the floor.
Stepping back into the holding cell, he observed with amusement as the group of prisoners moved back in fear and the guard in the other room began to stammer. “Sir, he said…he told me that…it was all his idea…but he said this was your order…I just put this guy in here and…”
Govan had been planning on letting him live, but his quivering ramblings were growing tedious, so he raised his disruptor and fired again, ending the blathering idiot’s words and leaving the desired silence behind.
Allowing the fact that he had just killed two of his own men to sink in, Govan slowly crossed the cell to the still restrained man, who had not yet been hurt. Releasing him from the restraints and throwing him into the holding cell as he had done with the other, he returned to the holding cell and reactivated the two holographic walls.
“I am in charge here, and I alone will decide your fates, which is unfortunate for you. There will come a time where you will wish to have them back.” Govan stated calmly before plunging the room into darkness and returning to the observation room, where the remaining guard appeared completely white in fear.
“Get more guards in here. And make sure it’s clear that nothing is to be done except by me.” Govan ordered placing his disrupter and control back in its place.
“Yes, Sir.” the guard replied, clearly having figured out that was all he needed to say.
Rubbing his forehead, the Major strode out of the room. Still early in the morning, and already he was exhausted, had a terrible headache, and was in a very bad mood. Still it was time to pay a visit to his other set of prisoners. Maybe that would cheer him up a bit…

"Almost got it. Just move your sleeve material between the sensor and the receiver." He wiggled himself backward, pushing his back into the nurse's back so their tied hands could touch. Alice's hands were clammy, and she tried hard to steady them.
A noise could be heard, and within a short period of time it matured into a set of footsteps in the outside corridor. Marco quickly moved away from the nurse, causing trauma to the handcuffing device. It sent a visible burst of electricity through his body, emitting a pinkish glow to those witnessing it. Gasps were heard from the huddled group, but no sound was heard in Jatan's direction. Guards turned to see what the commotion was, when a Romulan entered the room.
Later, during debriefing, Marco would not be able to recall what words transpired, but he did remember what he saw. Two Romulans vaporized. This new Romulan did not settle for torture. He simply eliminated his problems.
"What do you want with me?" the doctor asked as he was man-handled into a cell. With a square device containing multiple prongs, the Romulan unlocked the cuffs.
"So you don't like the cuffs?" the Romulan said, mockingly. Marco immediately brought his hands forward and rubbed his wrists, closing his eyes tight. If he was willing to kill his own crew, he surely was about to vaporize Marco. After holding quite still with his eyes closed for a few seconds, he noticed through his eyelids that the lights turned off in the room. He opened his eyes to see the Romulan leaving. The door mechanically clicked, and a energetic hum raised in pitch for a few minutes until it leveled off in tone. Marco went to the door, touched it, and found it to be reinforced by forcefield.
"Hello!? Can anyone hear me?"
Not to his surprise, nobody answered.
Jatan opened his eyes to see himself being released from his bondage. His tethered hands drooped to his side, as he slid down the wall. Too weak to move, he asked for some water. To his surprise, his wish was granted.
Fading in and out of consciousness, his head was propped by a Romulan guard and he was helped with his re hydration. "What had brought this about?" he thought. He was fortunate enough to be unconscious during the period the trigger happy Romulan was in the room.
"Marco..." he said, realizing that the chief medical officer was no longer present.
"He's being held by the Major," one of the guards replied.
"Where... is.." he panted a bit, and motioned for some more water. The guard held the cup to the doctor's lips again. Wetting his lips, he finished his question, "the baby?"
"The Major has taken her too. It is of no concern to you. I suggest you hold still and be quiet."
"She has a ... disorder... she ... needs... treatment." He let his neck muscles relax, and his head rolled down. It stopped when his chin rested on his chest.
The statement, however, perked up one of the guards.
"She isn't contagious, is she?"
Alice, overhearing the conversation, took the reigns for Doctor Reckus. "We don't know. The treatment we had made for her was working, but in this environment, it might cause a relapse. In its normal state, her condition is highly contagious." Her tone turned from concerned to sour. "If you wouldn't have taken her so fast, we would have told you that."
The Romulan guard whispered to another guard, who jogged to the door, presumably to inform the Major of the possibility of an infectious child aboard.
"You better hope she isn't contagious."
"Or what? You will vaporize us?" Uncharacteristically, Alice stood up to the Romulan. "We are your only hope. Doctor D'Angelo and Doctor Reckus devised a treatment after many days of work. You have no chance without them and their team of nurses helping you if there is an infection."
"So - you are your own bargaining chip?" The Romulan seemed amused at the irony. "We'll see what the Major has to say about this."
Alice slumped back against the wall, and forcibly crossed her arms in disgust and worry. She did not intend to give the Major another reason to pay one of his eventful visits.

From his slumped position against the wall, Jatan opened his eyes and offered the nurse a weak smile. "Smart of you, to say that she's contageous," he whispered, "that might give them a fright and us some leverage. However, don't forget that they can kill us at their whim and he will kill without hesitation. None of us are safe, don't ever think for one moment we are safe."
He started to crawl forward, wincing at every move. "Marco, are you hurt in any way? Did they hurt you?" Even though the cell was covered in complete darkness, Jatan found his way towards the nurses and his chief. "They seem to think that I am the chief medical officer. I think for safety's sake, we should let them continue to believe that, since I do still outrank you."
Aboard the Vesuvius, Sonak clutched her baby close to her chest as she ran into sickbay, the counselor at her heels. She felt extremely lightheaded, even more so since she was failing at every attempt to contact her mate through their bond.
She knew her primary worry should be the safety of her ship, then that of the fleet she flew with, and then and only then the diplomats and her missing crewmates and husband. Time was their enemy now, especially since Elanna's sick baby was among the missing crew.
As she marched into sickbay, she saw a nurse bent over one of main sickbay's injured nurses. "I am here to assist as medical officer," Sonak announced as soon as she saw Caldwell appear from one of the closed cubicles, a sad look on his face.
"Ma'am, you are needed on the bridge," Caldwell argued, "morale is low as it is. Your presence here will not help us any. First and foremost, you are our commanding officer, no longer our chief medical officer. Indeed, it has been a long time since you served as such. The bridge needs you, the crew needs to know you are on top of things, working hard to get our crew and the diplomats back. One of them already died, we don't know how many more are already dead or will die."
The young doctor paused, pointing an accusing finger at her. "And how many more will die because of your indecision and inability to think clearly right now? Don't force me to relieve you of command commodore, for I'll not hesitate to do so."
Fury was now visible on the Vulcan's face, and if Daye had not put a restraining hand on her arm, she might've charged Caldwell. Yet, the young doctor did have a point, and she couldn't fault him for speaking boldly, for that was what she did expect of her crew. Instead, she tapped her combadge. "Logan, Tovan cannot be far. Find him! We need our pilot back if we are coming through this. Then report to Mercury bridge. Kanz, report to Discordia and prepare to engage multi vector assault mode. Inform the Romulans to give us space. Once we are split, Minerva will engage cloaking device. Discordia will head for Tovan's last known location. Mercury will stay put while Minerva will move off and continue to scout ahead."
Caldwell's expression was priceless yet he glowed with pride. "That's better," he acknowledged, "now get back to the bridge ma'am, and get us our crew and family back." She knew what he meant with family, in more ways than one and nodded. "Thank you doctor," she answered, handed her baby daughter to him then turned on her heels and left sickbay.
She had to hurry for she was now in Mercury's sickbay and she had a distance to cross before she would reach Minerva. "Counsellor Daye, remain here and assist Caldwell." she ordered, then ran off.

As he pressed the command to open the probe doors he looked up and thought he saw something, so he blinked but he didn’t notice it this time so he ignored it, as he pressed launch he look at his sensor readings and then looked up, he noticed the probe was spinning in circles, then something broke off and blew up, after that the entire probe blew up. ‘What the heck was that?’ Alex wondered.
He looked down at his readings it didn’t go out far enough to get an accurate reading Alex wondered what was wrong. As Alex entered the turbolift, he pressed the command to go to deck 17 engineering. Then he said aloud “halt.” He had worked 3 1/2 shifts in a row and had not gotten any sleep since he boarded. He then said, “change course to deck 17 engineering crew quarters.” “Beta shift cease the search we’ll continue it later.” The Gamma and Delta shifts had already finished their work so everything would be fine. After arriving in his quarters he set his alarm clock to ring in 10 hrs. and entered his bed.

"Commander Fox, report to my Ready Room, once you are on board.", stated Logan to the Comm system. Fox looked at the two men with him in the shuttle. "I guess that means we can't stay here." he turned back to the navigation controls and layed in a course back to the Vesuvius. On the main screen the Vesuvius and the Romulan Vessel slowly became larger. ETA in 15 minutes he announced, looking at his panel. Not much later he called the Vesuvius. "Vesuviette asking permission to dock." he called. "Granted." came the reply. Not much later the Vesuviette stood in shuttle bay 2 again and the 3 men exited. Immediately Fox went to Byrne's ready room only to find it empty. Wondering where he could be he called "Computer where is Commander Byrne." "Commander Byrne is currently in the Science Lab." the computer answered. Immediately Fox left the readyroom again and headed for the Science Lab, wondering what Byrne would be doing in there. Finally he came to the Lab and entered. As Commander Fox entered the Science Lab, he was aghast at the condition of his personal space. Once briefed, he joined Byrne in looking for a signature of the heartbeat of the Andorian delegate. Fox kept looking at the equipment Byrne had set up. Seeing if he could locate the Andorian. He looked at Byrne "Still nothing. What we're looking for might not be here."
