Phaser Fire Found

"Oh dear, that is a problem!" Konal exclaimed as she sipped her tea. She pushed away from the desk to look out the window toward the blackness of space. "And it's not happening too far away either."

"Which is why I brought the concerns to you," replied Commander Hanniken. The nighttime security officer yawned while reporting his findings.

"And the fact that someone fired phasers so close to our Starbase is discouraging. Are you sure there were no practice squadrons in the area?"

"Confirmed. The phaser fire is consistent with the dissident group Starfleet has been battling in the Beta Quadrant. The ships are older, but their crew are very adept at hiding. I imagine they retreated quickly into the asteroid field after they fired. Why they are here, I have no clue."

"What was their target?"

"None that we could tell, which made it all the more strange."

"Maybe they want us to go looking for them," Konal replied. Playing into the hands of terrorists was not something she was keen on doing, but the celebration that was about to take place on Starbase Conqueror required that every security issue be well in-check before dignitaries started arriving. Whether or not this was a trap, Konal was going to forced to investigate.

Please investigate and take care of the issue. We are going to be having a celebration aboard the base shortly, and I don't wish to have that interrupted. =/\=

After closing the channel, she sat back down and dismissed Hanniken. The Commandant sipped her tea casually. So many things went wrong on Starbase Conqueror in the past year, she wasn't the least bit phased by the current state of events.

S'reena hope walked into the new academy commandant's office, guided by a young ensign who looked nervous enough at the fact that he had to guide her. Not that she noticed, for she couldn't see his expression. "Thank you ensign, that was most kind of you," the Romulan properly thanked the youngling, before finding a seat.

She was getting reasonably adept at getting about on her own, though some things she still needed guidance on. "Commander Manto, I heard something about a crisis outside?" she queried softly, "oh I smell tea...could I...?" She trailed off, not really wanting to ask for a cup of tea. "At any rate, is there anything I can do to help? I feel I'm being left out because I can't see. I may be blind but I still got a very capable set of hands and very keen hearing. I'm still useful, and I've been medically cleared for duty."

"Aye," Konal replied, using Commander Hope's typical reply as her own. "I have just the job for you."

Konal shuffled through a few padds.

"Can I get you some tea?"

She poured it carefully for the Commander, not knowing how capable the Romulan had become since the unfortunate events that led to her blindness.

"We are going to be having a celebration in a few days. The Fun in Time celebration. I don't know if you were here for the last one that Commodore ONE held a couple of years ago. I know I wasn't, but I heard so much about it." She waited for a response of some sort, but Commander Hope already had the tea to her lips, and didn't quickly respond.

"Everyone decorates their shops and cafes in the Promenade in some sort of historic cultural fashion. I'm going to need someone to organize it, and officially help me welcome the different diplomats. We are going to be hosting people from all over; Ambassadors, Department Commandants, and Flag Officers alike. It's going to be quite the event."

Another burst of energy shook the Starbase. Commander Hope braced her chair. The tea in front of her dropped to the floor. S'reena, without the luxury of sight, didn't know to try to catch it.

"Oh don't worry about that," Konal said. "The whole place cleans itself every few hours. Admiral Drew had the system installed while he was here." She giggled. "To tell you the truth, now that I'm sitting in here, I find myself considering using technology for cutting corners. Who has time to clean?"

She poured another cup of tea. She loudly set it down so S'reena wouldn't have to be told where the cup was. It saved her the embarrassment of being dependent.

"Someone is releasing photon bursts out near the asteroid field," she continued, "I have Colonel Methos out determining the problem. I told him it needs to get resolved before anyone arrives for the celebration."

The talk of the celebration snapped her back from her digression.

"Oh, yes, so- In the next few days, that is, if you want to help, I would request that you familiarize yourself with the guest manifest. I want to make a good impression. This is the first time I am meeting most of these people."

"Any questions?"

"Why would someone release proton bursts near a crowded starbase?" S'reena scowled, reaching for the new cup of tea. The sound with which it was set down indeed helped her locate it, and she quietly thanked the new academy commandant for her thoughtfulness.

"As long as this manifest is capable of speech, I'd be happy to have something useful to do," S'reena smiled, glad to go back to the topic of celebrations. "And what would you prefer for decorations? I'm sure any replicator can listen to specifications given, or search whatever is on file and produce that."

Her smile brightened. "And I'm sure there are loads of people, especially children who'd love to help. Kahlan would love to, I know that much. Anyone else you think might be able to help me?" She quietly thought of the girl that had married TJ Edwards, she might be willing as well, or provide some of the treats as word had it that she was an excellent cook. "And I'll get Jason to make sure first aid posts are in place just in case. There's always the odd idiot sampling food designated dangerous to his or her species."
