In fact, the Constitution is in "Space Seed"
And there were plenty of Akira's in the Dominion War on DS9

nah, it came out okay.
And the cosntitution was not in Space seed. if you can tell me where, I'll check back. But I don't recall any other starships in that ep. Just the dy-100 sleeper.

Constellation was Commodore Decker's ship I believe, but I don't think the Constitution has ever been seen on screen. It is also true that the USS Enterprise features the plaque which reads 'starship class', not 'Constitution class'. Without Enterprise to ruin continuity for us, I would suggest that in Kirk's time, Enterprise was a Constitution class, but which fitted into a larger category of 'starship class' since impulse only (possibly 'impulse class') ships may have still been fairly common. With Enterprise around and using individual ship classes as standard nomenclature, it is more likely USS Enterprise was Starship class, but the class was later known as Constitution after the first of its class.
Either way, the fact they are called a Constitution class means that the USS Constitution MUST have existed, even if only as a test model which was mothballed or put in a museum later, which is likely since it would not have been up to the same standard as an entirely new ship. It is wholly unlikely it was reused as the Enterprise since one could imagine certain features may have been discovered as needed which were just bolted on as good as need be on the inactive Constitution, but which would have been a liability on the Enterprise.

I wonder why they would really name the thing at all ... I mean, why add the USS at the begining and all that if it's just going to be mothballed? Perhaps the prototype is used and run through the ringer before others in the class are buildt so that design flaws can be accounted for ... and then refit for active service. It would seem like an awful waste to build a ship and then just sorta throw it away.

It would depend on how proto it is. Don't forget they named a shuttle Enterprise which wasn't actually capable of flying. Every ship needs to be named and registered, even if as NX-something.

I believe what you quoted was meant as a joke, hence the use of "lol". I believe that was her point anyway ^_^

Ok, true, but I think that perhaps the prototype would be run to pieces, perhaps under special conditions, and then maybe a year later after other ships have been buildt without certain design flaws, the prototype may be refit and then commissioned as USS ... There is a chance that the prototypes follow different registry procedures before they are commissioned. They may be just referred to by their design name and then when they are commissioned they are fully registered.

It was indeed a joke. Even if the thing with the launchbay doors too small make me laugh enough to nearly hope to see it. You know if there wasn't so much humour in Star Trek I wouldn't love it. And for the Charles de Gaulle screw up, it cost us millions of Euros, we have to laugh about it, if not there would be many more revolutions around here. Plus I didn't want to defend the idea of the name itself but since it has an opposition I feel like I must add that Charles de Gaulle is also a name inspiring hope to people under occupation and courage to resist (it is also a name referring to an old era, the one before the 68 cultural revolution but still...)

Yeah, I know what you mean ... in America we have to laugh at our president because really acknowledging that we elected him president ... again ... would cause us far too much pain.
