Briefing: The crew of the Vesuvius will be marooned on a M-class planet, where they will have to survive until help comes to take them back to the ship. They will have to set aside all their differences and co-operate to survive, drawing on everyone's seperate skills and help overcome eachother's weaknesses.
Mr Parsons, would you be so kind as to do the opening post? Going on the last paragraph of my last post on previous mission.

"Aye, Admiral," the Executive Officer said as he rose from his seat and move to the Conn station. As Commander Parsons laid in a course to the nearest starbase, "May I ask what we will be doing in system M1655?"
"Survey commander, plain and simple survey. And after our most recent mission, I am all for something that is not too taxing for us. We have not had any shoreleave recently, so we will combine that with our surveys. Agreed?"
* * *
The Vesuvius arrived at the starbase with all three of its cloaking devices back in place, though the ship was still in need of some repairs. Parsons rose from his place on the bridge as the ship's crew completed final docking procedures. "Commander Apirana please turn our guests over to Starfleet Security. Take your time debriefing them, we will likely be here a little while, while the station's engineering teams assist with our final repairs."
<TAG Apirana>
Adam had served with Pai on the USS Scavenger. Now he turned to another former crewmate from that ship, "Commander Daya, please coordinate between engineering and the engineering department on the starbase to ensure our repairs are completed as soon as possible."
<TAG Daya>
"Admiral, unless I am needed further, I would like to take few minutes to check on our new Chief Science Officer in sickbay. I am sure she is in good hands with Dr. Kennedy, but I would still like to check in and meet her."

Daya sat at his station during the docking procedures, going over various reports he had to deal with. When the docking was completed he stayed at his chair and continued. Adam had served with Pai on the USS Scavenger. Now he turned to another former crewmate from that ship, "Commander Daya, please coordinate between engineering and the engineering department on the starbase to ensure our repairs are completed as soon as possible." "Aye sir" Daya replied, tapping a few buttons. Tapping his comm badge he called down to the assistant chief, Lt. Commander O'Malley =^=Daya to engineering, im sending a report to base engineering, is there anything you would like to add to the repairs?=^= Daya waited for a second before he got a reply, =^=negative commander, looks like we've got all we need.=^= Daya nodded his head in response and then left his station, heading towards his room to get some quick rest.

"Admiral, unless I am needed further, I would like to take few minutes to check on our new Chief Science Officer in sickbay. I am sure she is in good hands with Dr. Kennedy, but I would still like to check in and meet her."
"Certainly Adam, you should make yourself acquainted with the new staff, as is your task." She turned kind eyes on him. "I know our previous mission was not easy on you but I hope you understand when I say that I know how you feel?" Even though she technically wasn't to feel anything, of course. "When you are done, meet me in my readyroom, I would like to discuss the mission in finer detail with you."
With a wave of her hand, she dismissed him. "Bridge to sickbay, Commander Parsons is on his way to see you. While he is there, please see to his physical? And call physical and psychological evaluations on all senior staff. Those that do not comply, cannot beam down for our new survey mission. I can see to your physical and psychological evaluation if there is no other physician available."
Cutting the comlink, she turned to Daya. "Have you been able to recover any data yet that may be helpful for the briefing?"

<Introductory Post>
The computer alarm from the cockpit alerted Maxil to the fact that the ship was preparing to reduce autopilot speed on approach to Starbase Montgomery, though it took him a few minutes to extract himself from among the circuitry of the floor access panel he had been working in.
Having been ordered to transfer to the starbase in order to meet up with his new assignment on the USS Vesuvius, Maxil elected to take the opportunity to test drive the prototype runabout christened Everest while en route. Given that Zanak himself had contributed to the design of much of the vessel, it seemed only proper that he should evaluate its performance under the stress of its maiden cruise. And stress it he did; at speeds equivalent to Warp 9.98, the untried systems of this prototype were rapidly proving themselves, and the results were promising, if a bit confusing.
The reason why the speeds he was using were only `equivalent` to Warp 9.98 and not exactly so was that this vessel was intended to be among the first small auxiliary craft comissioned by Starfleet to utilize the emerging technology of slipstream drive. Esssentially this meant that, intstead of traveling by `warping`space around a ship via a subspace field shell surrounding it (as warp engines did), this ship would use a unique type of deflector array to project a more powerful subspace field `tunnel` in front of it, manipulating local space in the slipstream in such a way as to allow even faster transit than warp speeds were capable of.
The technology had been in development at the Advanced Starship Design Bureau for several years now, and they had tentatively applied the concept to a few large starship design concepts (with limited success), but this would be the first try at applying it to a shuttle-sized craft. It was thought, based on data gathered to date, that smaller craft would prove less vulnerable and more adaptable to the rapidly changing distortions found within a slipstream. Still, the computer calculations required for course and subspace field adjustments were often thought to be too complex even for modern systems to adapt to.
Maxil had been eager to prove the conventional wisdom wrong, however, and so his design for the ship's engine control circuitry incorporated an extensive re-structuring of the circuit pathways, as well as the reliance upon a multitude of key nanite routing junctions in those pathways, taking a cue from the design of a recently discovered computer core recovered from the wreckage of a Borg scoutship (it had previously been unclear how Borg ships were able to successfully navigate their transwarp corridors).
As these thoughts flitted through his mind, Maxil simultaneously focused his attention on the helm, and took his seat at the controls. The familiar posture imposed by the pilot's seat returned to his reflexes, and in turn, gratified an instinct he had carefully honed over his relatively young years. He had started his spacefaring career at the controls of a similar ship, a little non-aligned blockade runner making medical supply runs in a Tzenkethi-controlled sector, and the first time he took the helm left an indelible impression on his then-inexperienced psyche. Truth be told, he was not that far removed from those days even now, but at least the ship he was flying now had more of his sweat and ingenuity invested in it than that blockade runner had.
It was a step up, he supposed, and through the course of his Starfleet career to date, Maxil was determined to keep making such steps, albeit in his own individual way. And along with the significantly expanded knowledge that Zanak's experiences gave him, there was little to stand in his way. Little, that is, but his own considerable unease at dealing with joined life. Zanak had been part of him for little more than a year now, and just as the Commission had always told him, it would take patience and an uncommon steadfastness to adjust to such an `entirely new dimension of existence` (in the words of his field docent).
It sounded so wonderful, and yet it had turned out to be so baffling so far. There were still times he felt like a child lost in the woods, with barely a clue as to even who he was. Those times had become less frequent at this point, but they still nagged at the edge of his consciouness like an insect bite that wouldn't heal. And for the Trill, insect bites could frequently be terminal...but perhaps he was being needlessly pessimistic about it.
All of this occupied his awarness (and he was beginning to learn just how much more he seemed to be aware of as a result of the joining), each idea with its own clarity, but the awareness of his new assignment was quickly becoming more clear than the rest. His confidence had begun, gradually, to rise druing the course of the trip here. He'd had a chance to study the ship specifications and crew bios during the long flight from Beta Antares, and now felt sure he'd picked the right place to make a difference. Three long years at the shipyards had left him eager to get back into space again, despite his continued affinity for engineering design. As a famous Trill poet once said in the days before space travel, "We do not sail the seas; the seas sail us." For Zanak, it was just as true among the stars as it was upon the waves.
The runabout sailed its way around the periphery of the station, and made for one of the many shuttlebays. As it did so, Zanak caught a glimpse of the nearby main hangar, wherein the USS Vesuvius sat docked in her berth. It was a strange moment for Zanak: at once familiar and mysterious. The Vesuvius echoed the design of a ship he had once worked on, Zephyr, but with so many changes and enhancements, sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle. It was like watching a child you had raised grow up to mature adulthood in almost no time. Indeed, Zanak had watched with amazement as an actual child had once been born, raised, and lost to a previous host.
Lifetimes away from that experience, so many things were familiar, and yet so many others remained a mystery to him. It was high time to explore that mystery. Maxil Zanak went about the business of docking his ship, and at last stepped into the station towards his new post, more ready to explore than ever.

ooc: actually mr zanak, vesuvius resembles a Nova class vessel only just a tad larger due to MVA capability. Nice intro post...you sure seem to know your engineering stuff! ic: Having given her orders, Sonak decided to take a brief break from her ship´s duties to one, have their prisoners offloaded and transferred to a starbase holding cell for deportation to a penal colony and two, meet her new chief engineer. Leaving Adam in charge of the bridge and re-supplying of the ship for their new orders, the Vulcan woman stepped through the hatch that would effectively put her on the starbase. She had never been on this particular starbase before, and she was unaccustomed to boarding any base but the one where she had her own office, and indeed, her own quarters for the times the Vesuvius was docked. And since the circumstances were unfamiliar, she had decided it would be the safest course of action to leave her family safely aboard her ship. Sometimes, she wondered whether it was wise to keep her entire family aboard the ship, especially with the dangers it frequently faced. Chagrined with herself, she shook her head, wiping a strand of dark red hair out of her face. Lately, she had started wearing her long hair down, with part of it pulled back into a braid. Sadly, some strands tended to escape its confinement and fell freely into her face. Through the loose hair, the tips of her ears revealed her alienness, along with the green hue to her skin. She was consciously aware of being stared at, which made her wonder just how many admirals, that were in command of a ship, tended to visit this particular station. Looking around, she finally spotted a young Trill, clad in a black/grey uniform, sporting a yellow collar, denoting he was either in the operations branche, or engineering. "Ensign Zanak?" she queried, as she approached the young man. She drew herself up, since he quite towered over her, and sized him up. "Rear Admiral Sonak Reckus," she introduced herself, though she did not offer him a hand in greeting. "I believe I saw you fly past not too long ago. My vessel, the USS Vesuvius, is docked here and we were ordered to pick you up as you have been assigned as chief engineer." She intertwined her fingers behind her back, tilting her face slightly in curiosity. "How much do you know about a Somma class starship?" she asked him, "or mark II phase cloaking devices?"

Zanak took his time walking through the immense promenade of the starbase, savoring the great variety of people and shops along the way. Montgomery was one of the more outlying bases in Federation space, and often played host to a multitude of visitors one wouldn't normally find at a Starfleet facility; partly because of this, and partly because it was more distant, the top brass didn't often venture here. It had a slightly more exotic atmosphere to it (as exotic as Starfleet bases tended to be, anyway), and he had actually been assigned to this base as his first posting out of the Academy, serving as one of the many Flight Ops officers. The job had only lasted a few weeks however, due to the fact that Zanak's talents lay outside of mundane traffic control, which his superiors quickly realized. Still he had made at least one good friend, an outgoing transporter chief named Lloyd, who had greatly increased Zanak's knowledge of Earth culture, and specifically Lloyd's Cardiff home. The last Zanak had heard, the ebullient Welshman was still stationed here, apparently now as Assistant Chief of Operations. No doubt he still complained about the station's Scottish name...
Approaching one of the hangar bay observation lounges, Zanak was again struck by the sight of the Vesuvius hanging suspended outside the lounge windows like a immense sculpture hanging from a museum ceiling. After a few moments admiration, he managed to pull his gaze away and found himself looking upon another intriguing sight: that of a somewhat short Vulcan woman with long, striking red hair. Though the fact that she wore command red and the appropriate ranks pips would have given him a clue, Zanak already recognized the face he had seen on the computer bio he had reviewed during his trip. Still, her computer image had not quite done justice to her impressive appearance in actuality; she not only radiated health, beauty, confidence, and a clear presence of authority, but also a somewhat more genial bearing than he might have expected from a logical Vulcan.
"Ensign Zanak?" Sonak queried, as she approached him. She drew herself up, since he quite towered over her, and sized him up. "Rear Admiral Sonak Reckus," she introduced herself, though she did not offer him a hand in greeting. "I believe I saw you fly past not too long ago. My vessel, the USS Vesuvius, is docked here and we were ordered to pick you up as you have been assigned as chief engineer."
Zanak bowed his head slightly in acknowledgment, then stood to attention. "As ordered, Admiral. I'm pleased that you noticed my runabout, by the way, as she has been my pride and joy these past few months. The Everest is an experimental prototype nearly ready for official trials, though I'm hoping to persuade Starfleet that I can conduct such trials as efficiently as their experts. After all, I helped design some of her guts; if I'm not an expert on the model, who is? In fact, I've already submitted my request via subspace to bring her along with me to the Vesuvius for the duration of our upcoming mission at least, to test out her systems in field conditions as the opportunity arises. Contingent upon your permission, of course." He allowed a quick smile to cross his lips.
She intertwined her fingers behind her back, tilting her face slightly in curiosity. "How much do you know about a Somma class starship?" she asked him, "or mark II phase cloaking devices?"
"Tri-fold warp intermix chamber design, top speed: warp 9.997, fitted with the latest defensive armaments and shielding, including short-range pulse cannons and a variant of the Mark II interphase cloaking system which utilizes design patterns from both Klingon and Romulan models. I've seen the Klingon model myself, briefly, when I visited the Imperial Outpost on Archanis IV. I understand our version is a marked improvement in terms of field stability, however. I look forward to finding out firsthand."

The Vulcan arched an eyebrow in amusement. "You tell me," she suggested, "I am a doctor, hardly an engineer. You could tell me anything about an engine, and lie about it at that and I would not know about it." The other eyebrow rose as well. "Though I do expect you to be truthful when you talk about delicate equipment. One part of it out of alignment, and the entire operation is in danger." She started to walk back to the docking hatch.
"I presume you would like to get started in engineering as soon as possible. I strongly suggest you oversee the repairs on Mercury's cloaking device. It was forcefully taken on our previous mission, and though installing it again is going swiftly, I would prefer a trained chief to supervise it, rather than my first officer or the security chief. Neither are skilled engineers." She paused, studying him as they walked.
"However, first I am going to show you your quarters and then take you to sickbay. New arrivals must submit to a complete physical, and preferably a psychological evaluation. As both are due at the moment, you will not quite stand out." She almost smiled, but not quite. "I do not believe it would be prudent for me to take care of the psychological assessment, as I am a counselor myself, aside from a surgeon. In absence of a counselor, Doctor Kennedy will be seeing to everything."
She led him first to his quarters upon boarding of the Vesuvius, giving him his command codes and access to his quarters, then took him down to sickbay, where she was suprised to find Parsons. "Commander Parsons, I am pleased to introduce our new chief engineer, Ensign Maxil Zanak. Commander Adam Parsons is the first officer," she explained to the engineer.
Then she spotted Kennedy. "Kerry-Anne, I have a new subject for you. Have you called the physicals and psychological evaluations for the crew yet?"

Paikea had never been the most serious officer around. In fact he had gotten into quite a bit of trouble at the Academy for his love of the holodecks. That was years ago and Paikea had sadly learned that life cannot always be as care free as it used to be. As he walked behind the prisoners in his custody, Paikea couldn't help but feel rather sad that in a few short years his attitude towards people had completely changed.
"Do you know what is going to happen to them Commander?" a brand new security officer asked of Paikea. At first Paikea was not going to reply because everyone knew what was going to happen to them, but he realised that the young man just wanted to break the eerie silence that had overtaken them.
"Hopefully they will lock them up and throw away the key," Paikea said as he gave one the prisoners a little shove,"there is no reason for you to delay this. You know what you did and now you pay for your crimes."
"I don't think so, you stupid boy," the prisoner said," you just watch. I'll be out of here in less that a month."
"Maybe, but I'll make sure to come back and lock you up again," Paikea said glad that they had finally arrived at their location," Command Paikea Apirana. These are your prisoners now, we are done with them."
"Thank you Commander," the station's security officer replied before turning his attention on the prisoners," welcome to the rest ofyour lives boys."

"Aye, Admiral," the Vesuvius XO said with a nod as he strode toward the turbolift. "Sickbay," Parsons said once inside the lift. He arrived at his destination moments later.
"Dr. Kennedy, what is the status of our Chief Science Officer?" Adam queried.
<TAG Kennedy>
"Ensign Peldraba, I am Commander Adam Parsons, Executive Officer. It is a pleasure to finally meet you." The young woman seemed a bit shaken, but engaging and the two officers chatted about her brief career and her parents, who had been professors at Starfleet Academy. They continued their conversation intermittently while Dr. Kennedy performed a physical on Parsons that was ordered by Admiral Sonak before she left for the starbase. Adam also took the opportunity to chat with the Bajoran Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Kennedy had been on board now for several months, but the XO had not had much interaction with her. "How is everything in Sickbay, Doctor. Is there anything you need?"
<TAG Kennedy>
Sometime later the Admiral entered Sickbay with a young ensign in a Tactical, Operations, or Engineering uniform that Parsons did not recognize.
"Ah, nice to meet you Ensign Zanak." Adam said hopping down from the exam table. "Are we finished here?" the XO said looking back toward Dr. Kennedy.
<TAG Kennedy>

"Very good Commander, I believe the Admiral would like you to report to sickbay for examination before you do any site seeing on the station," Parsons said smiling at Sonak as he left Sickbay and headed for the bridge to relieve Commander Daya.

Sonak led Zanak first to his quarters upon boarding of the Vesuvius, giving him his command codes and access to his quarters, then took him down to sickbay, where she was suprised to find Parsons. "Commander Parsons, I am pleased to introduce our new chief engineer, Ensign Maxil Zanak. Commander Adam Parsons is the first officer," she explained to the engineer.
Zanak smiled amiably at the Exec, and took a brief opportunity to size the man up. With a remarkably similar appearance, height, and apparent age, Parsons might have have passed for a long-lost brother of Zanak's if not for the fact that he was human. He also seemed to possess a natural exuberance and friendliness that Zanak figured must serve the officer in charge of all personnel aboard ship rather well. "Pleased to meet you, Commander. I understand from your bio that your parents are engineers at Utopia Planetia; perhaps I've even met them during my brief time there during my Academy days."
"Ah, nice to meet you Ensign Zanak." Adam said hopping down from the exam table. "Are we finished here?" the XO said looking back toward Dr. Kennedy.
As Parsons was due to relieve the Bridge officer shortly, he made his apologies and took his leave after Zanak mentioned his desire to evaluate the Engineering department duty roster at some point during the course of the day. There were a few specialists Zanak wanted to bring aboard from the station to assist in repairs, and he thought it best to secure the Exec's approval first. Agreement was reached, and the two parted in good spirits.
<TAG Parsons (feel free to elaborate on our conversation as desired)>
Zanak then took his turn at the exam table, and Dr. Kennedy and he soon fell into a comfortable repartee, discussing a little of each of their pasts as the med scanners chirped away. They found that their early years had something in common, given that both had always longed to expand their horizons beyond the sheltered state of their upbringing, although the doctor admittedly had the stronger claim to such an upbringing, having spent much of it in various Bajoran provinces, while Zanak could claim hundreds of parsecs of interplanetary space as his backyard. Nonetheless, there was a definite desire they shared to explore and continue learning from the potentially limitless new cultures, lifestyles, and humanoid conditions that life in Starfleet often presented them with.
<TAG Kennedy (again, don't hesitate to add anything you wish here)>
As the day progressed, Zanak became gradually acquainted with more of the crew, and in particular his own Engine room staff. The Assistant Chief, Sarah O'Malley, shared his passion for the job and seemed even more observant of detail than he was (which was, indeed, quite a feat). The Computer Systems Specialist, Sam Joughin, immediately dazzled Zanak with his encyclopedic knowledge and experience with every conceivable type of database and especially with command-and-control circuits. Zanak mentioned that such expertise would be invaluable for the evaluation of the runabout Everest's computer, and Joughin indicated that he was already familiar with that vessel's unique design and was eager to have the chance to contribute.
The first order of business for Zanak and his team, however, involved the repair and re-installation of the Mercury module's cloaking device. Repair had been relatively trouble-free, as the pirates who had stolen it had apparently treated it with the all the care that a precious piece of bounty warranted while it had been in their clutches. The control housing at the stealth systems interface station, however, was another story. Several circuit boards had been irreparably damaged during the theft, and had to be entirely replaced, and a specialized plasma conduit used to provide the cloak with its own independent power source in the event of emergency also had to be swapped out due to fire damage. Once everything was thoroughly evaluated and each problem identified and diagnosed, however, the repair process went about rather smoothly.
Zanak was particularly impressed with how efficient the design of the cloak was, and he even had to revise his own high opinion of the Klingon model on whose design this device had been partially based; clearly, Starfleet mastery of stealth technology had advanced since he had last studied them in detail at the Academy. There were clear and disturbing signs that some kind of matter replication device had been used to scan the cloak, though, and had left minor telltale molecular changes in the structure of the device. Fortunately, all of the vital components, including the tetryon compositer, remained unscathed due to the special synthetic metals used in their construction. Such metals had been designed especially to resist replication techniques, and this was the first instance Zanak had heard of where the reliability of such protection had been successfully proven in the field.
By the end of the afternoon shift, the device as a whole had been meticulously scanned, what little superficial damage there was had been repaired, certification for re-installation completed, and computer simulations indicated that its functionality was as good as ever. Nonetheless, Zanak ordered the results double-checked, this time with a micron scanner brought aboard from the station. He wasn't going to take any chance of overlooking anything when it came to such a vital ship system.

"Doctor, call me when it is my turn to show up for the evaluations. I will be on the bridge." The Vulcan left sickbay, and headed back for the bridge. Soon enough they would be entering their designated unnamed system and enter orbit around the planet. "All senior staff, report to the briefingroom in one hour."
They needed to prepare, and orders were that all senior staff were to beam down, and only the senior staff. No additional crewmembers were allowed. Sonak had the vague impression that besides a survey mission, this was also an order for teambuilding. She could understand that, as co-operation between departments, especially the senior officers, often left something to be desired.
= an hour later =
The Vulcan admiral reviewed her senior staff, as they sat around the oval table. "The orders are simple," she started, "we all beam down, and each department is to take only the necessary equipment. Besides standard issue such as weapons, tricorders and medical kit, each is to bring what they deem necessary to perform this survey. I will now hear suggestions from each department on what we should bring. Remember, we should be able to carry it around if necessary, and we should also bring shelters. I will also hear suggestions on what exactly we need in that area."
<everyone, bring it on! My next post will have us all beaming down...so don't wait too long with your suggestions!>

Kerry-Anne stood in sickbay reading over a few Padds she had been handed when she turned to the sound of the doors opening, she gave a polite nod and smile as Commander Parsons walked in.
"Dr. Kennedy, what is the status of our Chief Science Officer?"
he asked as he walked closer to her, kennedy furrowed her brow for a moment before responding.
“She is fine I sent her back to her quarters I think some time off duty will do her good.”
Kennedy motioned towards the side of sickbay and followed parsons over, she pulled out a medical tricorder and began performing the physical she had been ordered to give the senior crew. He looked at her for a moment before filling in the silence.
"How is everything in Sickbay, Doctor. Is there anything you need?"
Kennedy looked around for a moment trying to remember if she needed anything, she looked back to parsons and said. “Everything is fine down here Commander.”
Moments later Admiral Reckus waled into sickbay closely followed by an Ensign she couldn’t recognise, she continued scanning parsons while the three talked.
"Are we finished here?" Parsons asked as kennedy took a step back.
“Yes Commander.. you look fine.”
She turned to the new Ensign who’s name she had overheard as being Ensign Zanak.
He jumped on the biobed and the two had a conversation about their childhoods as Kennedy gave him a physical. She smiled as he described his ambitions in Starfleet before hearing Sonak say out loud.
"Doctor, call me when it is my turn to show up for the evaluations. I will be on the bridge."
Kennedy nodded and said. “yes ma’am.”
Looking back down at Zanak she patted his arm and said. “You are free to go Ensign.. and Welcome aboard.”

***Earlier in Sickbay***
"Ah, nice to meet you Ensign Zanak." Adam said hopping down from the exam table. "Are we finished here?" the XO said looking back toward Dr. Kennedy.
"Well I don't know if you would have met my parents, my mother was in charge of a crew that fabricated and assembled portions of ships. Now she is an inspector. My father works in the area of hull insignia and markings."
"I look forward to chatting with you about the yards sometime though. I was raised on Earth, but spent some time at Utopia Planetia as a child and worked their intermittently during my time at the academy."
After a brief discussion about Engineering personnel changes, "It was very nice to meet you, Ensign, but I am due on the bridge. I will stop by engineering once you get settled in," Adam said on his way out the door.
* * *
The Executive Officer had relieved Commander Daya on the bridge and was sitting in the command chair reviewing a report from engineering when he heard the announcement from the Admiral for a briefing of the senior staff.
By the time Admiral Sonak entered the bridge, the Vesuvius had disembarked from space dock and was en route to its survey mission at warp speeds. The Admiral made her way to the briefing room and Parsons followed a short time later.
Adam listened as the Science officer outlined the equipment that would be needed for the survey, other officer jumped in, and when they were finished the XO turned to the Admiral, hands folded in front of him. "Ma'am, when you say we will all beam down, who do you mean?"
<TAG Sonak>
"I see. Well, I must say I have some concern about the senior staff all being on the planet at the same time. Who did you have in mind to to command the ship while we are surveying on the surface?"

I will also hear suggestions on what exactly we need in that area."; Zanak twiddled his thumbs a moment as several thoughts quickly passed through his mind (as habit often compelled him to do); presently, though, he voiced his thoughts. "In terms of necessary equipment, I would have to say that from an engineering standpoint, sufficient shelters are going to be crucial for an extended stay on a presumably uninhabited surface filled with virgin terrain. Depending on what kind of climate extremes we might face, we may require additional supplementary features for the standard-issue prefab shelters, which otherwise can support two persons and collapse into a package small enough to fit in a rucksack." "Beyond that, however, I'll want to review any data we have yet on estimated physical conditions such as gravity, oxygen content, and so forth. Such data will dictate not only life support needs, such as environment suits or magnetic boots, but also the strength of the scanners we use to collect the survey data; for instance, if there's heavy enough magnetic interference, we're going to have to adjust the tricorders accordingly. Also, my team is working even now to boost transporter and shuttle efficiency in case we need to evacuate anyone from the surface in a hurry, but I would like to suggest that everyone in the landing party have subcutaneous transponders injected to increase our chances of locating someone quickly in an emergency." <TAG anyone> As the discussion continued, Zanak eventually brought up his other major concern. " On a related note, if you feel that my expertise is needed planetside, I have no objection to leaving the engine room in the hands of my assistant, but I'm not sure what I can contribute to the landing party in this case. Would I not be of more use aboard ship right now?" <TAG Sonak, anyone>

Daya looked around as most of the officers were concerned about the habitat of the planet, which he secretly called Planet Hope, after his previous first officer, S'reena Hope. Taking his turn to speak up he told all present what the conditions were. "The Planet is a Class M, planet roughly 85 % of it is covered in dense foliage, to include various species of trees and other plant life, most commonly associated with Earth's rainforests. Average temperature is anywhere between 32 degrees celcius, to 37 degrees celcius, with a humidity of around 60-75%, so i would recommend you pack light clothing, its gonna be hot." He suddenly remember why he called the planet Hope, mostly becuase Commander Hope was kind of a hot head when ever she dealt with Daya, but after they got to know each other they grew closer, showing a side of rare beauty in the commander, a beauty he wished would reflect on the nick named planet.
"Ensign," Daya called, looking over the engineer, whom he had yet to meet. "I hope dense forest and hot weather wont bother your ship side equipment to much." He said, in a questioningly way. "Also, i would suggest each member take a personal shelter, to reduce the added chance of heat exposure"

"Also, i would suggest each member take a personal shelter, to reduce the added chance of heat exposure" Zanak took in the Ops Chief's information attentively, then turned to him to address his questions. "I shouldn't think the equipment will be affected by the temperature or foliage, unless the chlorophyll in this world's plant life is exceedingly corrosive, as I know certain species can be. Even should that be the case, we can reinforce the casing of our instruments with a layer of cast rodinium, which can absorb acidic compounds without allowing further penetration." "Also, I agree that the shelters should provide as much protection against the elements as possible, and the two-man kits would normally suffice for that. However, we can replicate single occupant kits if you think conditions warrant."

"Perhaps we should take the single person kits for cases of emergency, one for each person," Sonak suggested, "we do not know what weather conditions we may face, or what illness may strike us."
She turned to the chief medical officer. "How are the crew evaluations coming along? I want everyone certified fit for duty. Can you have all physicals done within two hours? Give people the necessary inoculations, if they have not been given any in the past. A booster, where required."
The Vulcan rose to her feet. "Everyone tend to packing, make sure you take everything you need, but such that you will still be able to carry your essentials, in the event we need to hike a fair way. Report to sickbay if you have not had your physical yet. In two point five hours, we beam down."
~ one hour later ~
Sonak reported to sickbay as had been required by her own orders. Psychological evaluations would have to wait, there was no longer any time for that. "I am reporting for my physical," she stated calmly. Of course, she knew her own sickbay by heart, and had no qualms about being here, since she was a medical officer herself.
Even to day, she still preferred the teals over the marroons of command, but she did have little choice in the matter. At least this mission, uniforms were the least of their essentials. Comfortable gear, hot weather as Daya had termed it, would be all she was taking.
When she was done having her physical, the Vulcan returned to her quarters to finish packing, and saying farewell to her family.
"Mommy can we go too?" Six-year old Seliv gazed up at his mother, eyes begging. "We want to go camping too, the last time we went camping is years ago."
That much was true; she remembered having gone camping, even sharing a tent with her crew. But this was no camping trip, and at least Jatan seemed to understand the importance of the mission. "Be careful," he whispered to her, as he helped her pack.
"I am always careful," she retorted, while explaining to her youngest son that this was not a camping trip, but a survey mission. "I have taken every precaution, because of the humid air. I know what I am doing."
~ two point five hours later ~
Packed and ready to go, Sonak walked into the transporter room. Commander Mark Harper was waiting for them, looking none too pleased. "The entire senior staff down planet," he complained, "what if we get called away?"
"I am quite certain you can manage commander, have you not commanded this ship before? You will have full authorisation to do as is needed, included leaving us behind. Remember, the safety of the crew comes before us. I order you to depart, if the situation demands it of you."
"Understood admiral," Harper replied, but his expression remained troubled. He'd have a word with Parsons, before they all beamed down, to see what he thought.

Kerry-Anne stood in the middle of sickbay as she ushered the members of the crew in who were due for their physicals, the Admiral had been adamant people get them over and done with before they embarked in the ridiculous camping trip Kerry was dreading.
It wasn’t that she was not happy about spending time off of the ship it was rather she dreaded not having access to sickbay or any of the other things she had grown accustom to having at her fingertips.
She and the rest of the medical staff had gotten most of the evaluations done except for some rather big exceptions.. Admiral Sonak for start.
It wasn’t long after thinking about calling her that Kerry saw her walk in. She hated performing physicals on Doctors nothing was more annoying than when the patient knew as much as the doctor about medicine.
Sonaks did not take long and after some discussion about the humidity on the planet and her Vulcan physiology Kerry gave her something to help her cope better. She was a little more than relieved when Sonak vacated her sickbay she didn’t know what it was but she didn’t like having a commanding officer who was also an M.D she could see it leading to possible disagreements in the future.
With only a few members of the crew needing their check ups and her staff being able to cope with the remaining few she decided it was best for her to get packing for the trip. She packed as much medical supplies as she could manage she was sure she didn’t want to be unprepared down there.
Leaving sickbay she returned to her quarters to gather some of her own belongings, first and foremost among the things she packed was her Mothers good luck charm a small pin that had been supposedly made by her grandmother during the Cardassian occupation. She stuck it in her pocket and continued to look through her things for other items she felt she would need or want.

The Admiral rose to her feet, as to conclude the briefing, "Everyone tend to packing, make sure you take everything you need, but such that you will still be able to carry your essentials, in the event we need to hike a fair way. Report to sickbay if you have not had your physical yet. In two point five hours, we beam down."
Parsons had not received an answer to his concern about all of the senior officers beaming down to the planet together, but he had said his piece and he would not broach the subject with the Admiral again, at least not yet.
~ one hour later ~
Adam had just received his physical prior to the briefing, so he put his gear together, making sure to pack items for personal hygiene, clothes, a phaser, tricorder, knife, etc. The XO was actually looking forward to this mission. Adam had been camping with his family many times as a child and many more with the Boy Scouts on Earth. He had become an Eagle Scout and enjoyed the outdoors and the break from technology. Parsons felt a little better knowing Commander Harper had the bridge. He was not a member of the senior staff, but he was a senior officer by rank.
Adam made his way into the transporter room and noticed Harper there, sending the senior officers off. "Mark," Adam shook the man's hand, while holding container by the strap in the other, "looking forward to your command?"
"Well, actually I am a little worried that the entire senior staff will be down on the planet...you know, what if something unexpected happens."
"I have the same concern, but the Admiral knows best. I'm confident you can handle it, and so is the Admiral, or she wouldn't be leaving you in charge."
"So she says, but she also gave me orders to leave you down there and high tail it out of here if the ship is in danger."
"Well, Mark, I'd appreciate it if you beamed us up first, but if that's not possible, the Admiral is right. Get this ship and crew the hell out of here. As acting commanding officer your duty is to the ship." Adam moved up onto the transporter pad and smiled. "We're only a comm signal away if you need us, I trust your judgment."
Mark pasted on a smile, "Thanks Commander," and the transporter energized.

Paikea could remember very fondly of the long walks through the mountains of New Zealand. His homeland was an amazing site to see and it was his hope that this little trek would once again bring him closer to nature. Vowing to get the physical done before he got in trouble, Pai quickly packed all that he would need for the mission.
~I think this is the first time I've looked forward to a mission while on the Vesuvius~ Pai thought to himself. His time onboard the Vesuvius was extremely difficult to say the least, but Paikea finally felt that he was able to make his peace with the problems in his life. He knew that he would never be able to call Sonak Reckus a close personal friend, but he knew that she was a strong and brave leader. Paikea fully understood now that not everything was going to go his way and he was ok with that. As he finished packing, Paikea took out his personal weapon collection. It would be nice to use the tools that his people had been using for hundreds of years.
"Apirana to Hollins, you are free to do as you please while I'm gone, but please do not perform security drills every four hours," Paikea said knowing his assistants love of drills," your max is three per day."
"Four, sir, I thought we decided on four," Hollins said almost pleading.
"Alright, but if you do anymore I promise that you won't like it," Paikea said as he picked up his gear and began to walk towards sickbay. Pai never liked all the medical test that Starfleet officer's were subjected to, but he knew how important they truly were. When he arrived he was pleased to see that sickbay was relatively empty, which was always a good sign," lets do this."
It had taken only twenty minutes to get medically cleared and once he had the doctor's approval Pai was on his way. He was getting more and more excited as he approached the transporter room.
"This is going to be fun," Paikea said to the rest of the senior staff immediately after he arrived.

Right guys...as of now, we're down planet
Sonak shielded her eyes against the bright glare of the sun, gazing into the dense forest that was ahead of them. They'd beamed down on what appeared to be a sort of plains, though it wasn't a large surface area. The Vulcan guessed that the total area of this clearing was probably no more than two square kilometers. On one side, there was what appeared to be a lake, though it could very well be larger and be dubbed ocean instead. The other side held the forest which she was looking at.
"Ensign Zanak, set up your equipment. Commander Daya, secure the perimeter. Commander Apirana, please assist Mr Zanak. Doctor, you and I are going food hunting. Though we have supplies, we cannot be certain how long they may last us. Additionally, we may find something new and usable." She paused, turning to her first officer. "Can you survey our surrounding?" she queried. "At present we lack a science officer.
She had barely given her orders, when Mark Harper contacted them. "Admiral, we are being called away. We're to report back to Starbase 47 immediately for redeployment, it's an emergency. We've no time to beam you up, you're on your own ma'am. I'll contact you, when we get back in range. Good luck." Before she could reply, the signal went utterly dead.
"Well..." The Vulcan frowned, sighing. "It appears we are marooned here." Something sparked behind her and when she turned she saw smoke coming from several boxes. "And it appears the humidity indeed killed our equipment. Maxil, salvage what you can, quickly!"

Zanak tugged at the collar of his shirt to loosen up its restrictive grip on his neck as he proceeded down to the transporter room for the mission ahead. The standard-issue field uniforms could be adapted for a number of different climate conditions, and the ones to be used on this particular excursion were made with with reflective, lightweight fabric interwoven with bio-sensors for remote vital sign tracking and hydrothermal circulation nano-tubes for keeping the skin cool. But in order for the nano-tubes to function to their full extent, the cuffs and collars at the extremities needed to be kept tightly closed.
All in all, the trade-off of one comfort for another was perfectly acceptable, especially given the rain forest conditions they would have to deal with on the surface of Hope, the colloquial name for the planet that Commander Daya had let slip at some point and the rest of the crew picked up on. Despite the optimistic nickname, however, Zanak was not especially convinced that they could look forward to a warm welcome from this world's untamed environment. He had heard stories as a kid from the freighter captains in the Guild who would occasionally be delayed or even marooned on wild worlds like this one, and their tales had only been somewhat exaggerated, as he had eventually found out himself during his trips both on his parents' freighter and in Starfleet. Perhaps Hope would prove the exception to the rule, but if not, Zanak was determined to equip the away team with every technological advantage he could muster.
Further contemplation was put aside in favor of action, though, as he entered the transporter and proceeded to beam down. The intense sunlight, crushing heat and humidity, and vibrant color of the foliage all around them soon crowded Zanak's senses and forced him into a new reality drastically removed from the sterile corridors and drafting rooms he had been so used to at the shipyards the past few years. He was back in the final frontier once more, there was no doubting that. And no matter how daunting the challenges it might present, he nonetheless harbored a secret, primal thrill at standing on a world where no Trill or Starfleet officer had stood before.
As his uniform's conditioning system began working, Zanak flipped down his eyeshades and turned to survey what possible aids to their survival the terrain might offer, and soon the shimmering inland sea to the east made it plain that they should at least have a close supply of freshwater available. The water would have to be tested, of course, but even if it had problems, Zanak had a few tricks up his handyman's sleeve to purify it for consumption should the need arise.
The transporter sparkle behind him alerted everyone to the arrival of the remaining supplies beyond what they were already carrying, and though it wasn't a great deal owing to the mission requirements, Zanak had carefully selected each device to complement eachother and the planetary environment. Those preparations were quickly thrown into question, however, when shooting sparks and acrid smoking began issuing from the containers. Zanak quickly rushed over to inspect the contents, and extracted the micro-fusion generator, ripping off an access panel to get at the circuitry, which had somehow been fused as if it had been welded. "Damn! I had this equipment retrofitted myself! There's no way the climate should have done this to it..." He dug out his tricorder which, much to his frustration, had apparently been rendered useless and smoking. "There's something else at work here, Admiral, and all of our field-generating equipment seems to be affected by it. Fortunately our field jumpsuits don't generate any energy, and they seem to be working fine. But I'll bet you 100 bars of latinum that more than the climate is at work here. Speaking of work, let me see what we have to do so with."
As Apirana and Zanak went about checking out the rations, shelters, medkits, mechanical tools and weapons, the engineer couldn't help but think that he was about to have an experience worthy of the tales told by his childhood heroes...if he lived to tell it...

"This is going to be fun," Paikea said to the rest of the senior staff immediately after he arrived.
Adam smiled, "I'm looking forward to it as well, Pai, it's been a long time since I've been on a campout." Parsons remembered his days as a Boy Scout with fondness.
The XO was examining his tricorder to get his bearing. There was a very large lake to one side and and a forest to the other. The Admiral gave out assignments to the rest of the senior staff and then turned to Adam, "Can you survey our surrounding?" she queried. "At present we lack a science officer.
"I think I can muddle through, Admiral," Parsons said, knowing that science was not his specialty, but he had been cross trained like every command officer, and had filled in for the Vesuvius' missing science officer before.
"Well..." The Vulcan frowned, sighing. "It appears we are marooned here." Something sparked behind her and when she turned she saw smoke coming from several boxes. "And it appears the humidity indeed killed our equipment. Maxil, salvage what you can, quickly!"
Parsons thought this was all quite unusual and had half a mind to call the Commander back or at least send them a shuttle. It wouldn't have taken that long to beam them up; but the Admiral was in charge and Adam knew Harper and Starfleet would not leave them stranded for long.
As Adam dropped his smoldering tricorder he was forced to agree with Mr. Zanak, "Ensign, you're right, this has to be more than the humidity, no matter how extreme. Some of this gear is waterproof." "Admiral, I managed to complete a preliminary survey of the general area prior to my tricorder malfunctioning. I would suggest we set up camp over there," Parsons said pointing to a spot near the lake where the forest started. "From there we will be near the water, the shade and resources of the forest, and the clearing."
