Sonak beckoned Meylor. "Commander, with me," she ordered as she signaled for a turbolift to head for the bridge. "Parsons you have the bridge. Ensign Gatsby, enter course corrections and stand by. Once the ambassador and her party are aboard, set course for Romulan space."
Jay turned his chair around, “Aye sir.” he said. He sighed, just another day on the job. He took a sip of the ice cold coffee that sat on the console… Jay almost spat the liquid out onto the console, but he forced it down. He punched in the coordinates into the panel. He leaned back and closed his eyes, he heard someone walkup behind him. “Sir.” The person said. “Yes crewman.” Jay responded, his eye still closed. “You punched in the coordinates wrong.” he said. Jay responded, “No I didn’t, you’re wrong.”, eyes still closed. “I insist sir, I saw you type them in wrong.” Jay’s eyes snapped open, he turned around to face the young man, younger than he was, standing there. “Crewman, I am a registered helmsman and navigator, I know what I am doing…” he said, “What are your qualifications?” The crewman shuddered in his boots, “I am a registered shuttle pilot…” he said, weakly. “Exactly.” Jay said, “If you think I am wrong, you’re welcome to check them on the console.” The crewman leaned over the console and looked at the current heading, “Sir these are off.” he said. Jay sighed, “For the last time they are not.” Jay pressed a few buttons.
The console reading appeared on the viewscreen for all to see. “See crewman, these are correct.” Jay said. “No they are not, we should be four degrees starboard.” he said. Jay sighed, the young man did not know what he was saying. “Crewman… That would take us directly into a class G star…” Jay responded, leaning back in the chair and closing his eyes, “Look at the starcharts…” he said. The crewman looked over at the console again, his eyes widened. “You see crewman, make sure you have your facts straight before you insult a superior officer…” Jay said, eyes still closed. The crewman slowly backed away and left the bridge… Jay sighed, he would have to make sure this crewman logged more flight hours…

Commander Parsons sat through the briefing watching the Admiral intently. He had long known of her dislike for Cardassians, and decided that this mission would provide a good opportunity to ask Sonak about her feelings toward the species and the loss of her child.
Admiral Sonak gestured to each officer in turn as she introduced them to the Cardassian ambassador. Adam nodded to the diplomat as his name was called. It appeared that this would be nothing more than a transport mission for some diplomats, the Vesuvius XO hoped the mission would go smoothly and be relatively uneventful. The senior officer knew though, that diplomatic missions had a way of creating drama for Starfleet personnel that Parsons very much disliked.

After the briefing Admiral Sonak returned to her ready room and Adam requested, and was granted admission, shortly after. "Admiral, I was wondering if I might have a word."

"I know you're not terribly fond of Cardassians, and that you lost a child during some kind of mission involving them, but I have never inquired as to the details of those events," Adam tried to choose his words carefully. "I only bring the matter up now, as it might be helpful perspective during this mission, and we have served together long enough now that I feel more comfortable asking about what must have been a very traumatic event in your life."

*With his long range fighter on autopilot Larok meditated upon the fates and whims of Star Fleet Personnel in assigning him back to the Vesuvius. He realized that his misgivings were not for the ship but in how he had failed the CO of that ship. They got back to the present time and this Galaxy while he was fighting for the amusement of that Female Q. But that was the past. He now had his assignment, and he would do his duty to the best of his ability. A chime from the computer brought him out of his meditation;*
Computer: Approaching Cardassian border, this class of vessel is not cleared to enter Cardassian space except in time of war.
Larok: Disengage autopilot and open a channel to the USS Vesuvius standard hails. "This is Marine Long range fighter Sipan to USS Vesuvius, Colonel Larok piloting. <tag anyone> I am requesting vector for rendezvous and permission to dock. Larok standing by...

After the briefing Admiral Sonak returned to her ready room and Adam requested, and was granted admission, shortly after. "Admiral, I was wondering if I might have a word."
"You may commander," the Vulcan replied before looking over her shoulder. "Ensign Gatsby, you have the conn," she ordered, wanting to give the young officer a feel at commanding the bridge. She knew Meylor was perfectly capable and the most senior after Parsons, but she didn't necessarily have to leave the bridge to the senior officers. If she desired, she could leave a crewman in command.
Watching the young helmsman take the center seat, apparantly much to the bemusement of the other officers, Sonak followed Adam back into her readyroom.
[tag all, responses please to gatsby getting command]
"I know you're not terribly fond of Cardassians, and that you lost a child during some kind of mission involving them, but I have never inquired as to the details of those events," Adam tried to choose his words carefully. "I only bring the matter up now, as it might be helpful perspective during this mission, and we have served together long enough now that I feel more comfortable asking about what must have been a very traumatic event in your life."
"I am not comfortable discussing this event," Sonak confessed, "I rarely even spoke of it during a counseling session. Cardassians were responsible for the death of my first husband, Seliv. We were engaged in a battle with them, when he was overpowered and left for dead on the drive section of my previous vessel. I am certain you heard of the destruction of the Sovereign class USS Vesuvius?"
[Adam]
The Vulcan nodded. "Yes, Kate Martens was responsible for leaving him, but the Cardassians blew up the ship. And then years later, I was captured by a particularly cruel Cardassian officer and tortured. I was fortunate to have survived for I was severely injured. I have good reason to hate them, but I have no desire to continue to hate. It is illogical, and unnecessary, however I will need help to recover from this, and guidance. I do believe it helps that our ambassador is female, for it were the males that did this to me."
[Adam]
"I have several personal logs on the events, and even mission logs, if you care to examine them. I do not mind sharing them with you, you have a right to know. Suffice to say that I was incapable of functioning normally for a while."
[Adam]
A call was dispatched through from the bridge just after his answer. "This is Marine Long range fighter Sipan to USS Vesuvius, Colonel Larok piloting. <tag anyone> I am requesting vector for rendezvous and permission to dock. Larok standing by..."
"This must be a joke," Sonak commented, "he disappeared when we were held in the past, with NX Challenger and the Raven. I remember clearly that one moment he was there and the next he was gone. And no amount of searching could locate him, anywhere."
She moved to her computer terminal, beckoning Adam to come with her. "This is USS Vesuvius. Vector approach will be sent to you. Come about and dock, colonel. I will meet you at the hatch." This time, she actually smiled. "Pray he gets along with the Romulan diplomat as soon as we reach Romulan space. Speaking of which, I want you to contact her and let her know we will be at our rendezvous in three days. That will give Ambassador Porett time to get used to us and be more comfortable. It will also give me time to get to know her. Can you arrange for dinner for her, you and me tonight?"
[Adam]
She patted her first officer on the shoulder. "Where would I be without you commander," she commented, before departing the readyroom. "Ensign Gatsby return to help and keep the ship steady. The marine vessel on approach will be docking with us."
[Gatsby]
"Ensign Shakaar, with me. You have yet to meet our new marine officer. Commander Meylor has met him before, have you not commander?"
[Shakaar, Meylor]
The Vulcan admiral tapped her combadge. "Doctor Kennedy, prepare to receive a Vulcan marine shortly for his physical. Be advised that he can be very stubborn and may need persuasion to submit." Of course, she knew Larok would follow protocol. She had yet to meet a marine who would deviate from protocol on his own accord. Especially a Vulcan marine.
[Kennedy]
With Shakaar in tow, she made her way to the hatch and waited patiently for the vessel to dock and the hatch to pressurise. "Lieutenant Colonel Larok," she started, parting the fingers of her right hand in the traditional Vulcan salute. "Welcome back aboard. I trust your journey was uneventful?"

Ensign Shakaar sat quietly through the mission briefing, trying hard not to steal glances at the Cardassian diplomat, Porett. Although he was Bajoran and a member of Starfleet, this was the first time that he had actually been introduced to a Cardassian. Shakaar had found that on being introduced to Porett had actually induced a feeling of anger and resentment in him, which Shakaar found very unusual. He had been pretty friendly with his fellow Academy students, well liked on Bajor and had gotten on well with the member of the crew from his first ship assignment before he had been posted to the Vesuvius. He couldn't recall automatically disliking anyone before.
He had only heard stories of the Cadassian occupation of Bajor, a conflict his grandfather had fought in. For him, it seemed like a different world entirely. He had never fought a Cardassian, never had one invade his home, or had even been treated badly by one.
However, he found that he didn't like Ambassador Porett.
It was with a feeling of relief that the briefing ended and Shakaar could escape back to the bridge. It seemed that the data he had downloaded hadn't been needed, which was fine. He sat back down at his station and happily started reviewing the list of potential scientific anomalies that he might be able to take a look at while enroute to their destination. It seemed that there was a pulsar that had suffered a slight reduction in it's rotation speed in Sector 417 that he might be able to use that new tomographic scanner on. There was also a nebula in the same sector that had last been visited by a Starfleet probe almost 65 years ago. It would be at the extreme edge of the range of the lateral sensors, but Starfleet Astrometrics might appreciate an update.
He was only giving a little of his attention to the sounds of the bridge behind him, mostly paying attention in case someone had orders for him. However, the normal buzz of the bridge halted briefly, causing him to look up from his readouts. He had to go back into the conversations over the last minute in his head to discover why everyone seemed so surprised. "Ensign Gatsby, you have the conn,"
Shakaar joined the quiet silence on the bridge. An Ensign being given command of a Starfleet vessel was...unusual... Shakaar was surprised, and a little envious, of Gatsby's good fortune.
He was distracted from the Admirals statement by a beeping from his console. A ship had just come up on long range sensors. It was very small, like a shuttle or fighter. The transponder indicated the ship was a Federation Marine Long Range fighter, piloted by a Colonel Larok. He was about to start refining his scan when the ship identified itself and requested docking permission, which the Admiral granted.
Shakaar shrugged to himself. It wasn't really his business to be scanning incoming ships anyway. He was about to return to his examination of the data download when he heard the Admiral say "Ensign Shakaar, with me. You have yet to meet our new marine officer. Commander Meylor has met him before, have you not commander?"
"No sir. I have yet to meet Colonel Larok." Shakaar didn't manage to hear Commander Meylor's reply to Admiral Sonak as he was hustled onto the turbolift by the fast moving Vulcan CO.
"Deck 9" the Admiral ordered, and the turbolift shuddered slightly as it started moving and the Admiral tapped her commbadge to advise Doctor Kennedy to be ready to do another physical. Judging by Kennedy's previous reaction, Shakaar thought she wouldn't be too thrilled. Shakaar stood uncertainly towards the back of the lift, overcome by the standard courtesy of silence aboard turbolifts, until he could contain himself no longer. "Where are we going sir?" he blurted.
Admiral Sonak looked back at him, one eyebrow raised. "We are going to welcome Colonel Larok aboard. I thought that was fairly obvious, Ensign."
Shakaar winced to himself. Great, now the Admiral thinks I'm an idiot. Luckily, the door opened, the Admiral stepped out and he followed. The two of them marched quickly down the corridor. There were a few other Starfleet crew here, and they politely acknowledged the Admiral as she walked by. The two of them arrived at an airlock and the Admiral muttered "Ensign".
Shakaar assumed the she wanted him to initiate the airlock unsealing process. He quickly stepped forward, verified that there was a solid seal between the Vesuvius and the docked fighter. He then ran a quick scan of the interior of the docked ship, just to make sure that there was nothing unusual on the other side. All that was indicated was a standard atmosphere and a Vulcan. Shakaar initiated the airlock opening sequence and stood aside, allowing the occupant of the fighter to leave his ship.
The occupant of the fighter stepped aboard ship and the Admiral said "Lieutenant Colonel Larok," she started, parting the fingers of her right hand in the traditional Vulcan salute. "Welcome back aboard. I trust your journey was uneventful?"

*After receiving the coordinates from the Vesuvius,Larok set course and engaged the engines. The remainder of the trip and the docking went smoothly. Larok stood before the airlock waiting for the pressure to equalize. When the doors opened larok was greeted by Admiral Sonak and an Ensign. Raising his right hand Larok returned the greeting.
Sonak: "Lieutenant Colonel Larok," she started, parting the fingers of her right hand in the traditional Vulcan salute. "Welcome back aboard. I trust your journey was uneventful?"
Larok: "Thank you Admiral, but that depends upon your definition of eventful or the time frame. But the Journey from Star Base Assailant was uneventful."
<Sonak>
Larok: "As to my fighter do you have room for it in the shuttle bay? If not I will require a secure storage area for my cargo. I have been working on a new version of Marine assault armor.
<Sonak>
Larok: "If it is alright with you I would like to see my Marines and prepair myself for the required physical."

"Yes, of course, but I have never been made aware of the details. I didn't realize you had lost a husband there as well."
"I am very sorry, Admiral, I can only imagine that kind of loss. If you need anything of me during this mission, please don't hesitate to ask."
"Of course, that is quite understandable. I will review the logs if you think that is appropriate."
"This should be interesting," Parsons said raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, Admiral. I will arrange it."
Adam smiled slightly as Sonak entered the bridge, knowing full well what a strong woman the Admiral was, and that she would be just fine without Parsons. He followed her out before the door closed and took his place on the bridge. The Admiral left with Ensign Shakaar to meet Colonel Larok. Adam did not share the Admiral's concern about Larok getting along with the Cardassian ambassador. Larok was Vulcan, a marine, and had a background that included diplomacy. The XO was more worried about his CO and the two Bajorans on the senior staff.

Larok: "Thank you Admiral, but that depends upon your definition of eventful or the time frame. But the Journey from Star Base Assailant was uneventful."
"I am gratified to hear that," the younger Vulcan replied, "we were quite concerned when you disappeared from Challenger, during the rescue. When we were returned to our time, we started a search, but had to abort it when no-one found anything." She could see he wasn't done speaking, so waited patiently for him to continue.
Larok: "As to my fighter do you have room for it in the shuttle bay? If not I will require a secure storage area for my cargo. I have been working on a new version of Marine assault armor.
"It may be a tight squeeze but if we move the Vesuviette, I am certain your fighter will fit with the other two we have. Show me the armour the next time you are training your men. You did leave me with a half trained platoon, so you had better get them back into shape." She paused, giving him the chance to interrupt.
Larok: "If it is alright with you I would like to see my Marines and prepair myself for the required physical."
"As you wish. Doctor Kennedy knows you are coming. Oh and colonel? I am assigning you to Ambassador Porett, see to her safety. Once we get to Romulan space, we will be taking aboard the Romulan ambassador and her Human counterpart to Romulus. I am certain you remember my brother Richard?" She touched his arm. "Welcome back colonel, I have missed your expertise."
[Larok]
She made a shooing motion. "Go see to your platoon, and your physical, then contact Ambassador Porett. She will be attending dinner with myself and Commander Parsons. See to it that you are available. Dismissed."
[Larok]
Sonak returned to the bridge, feeling a lot more secure now that the marines were being seen to, finally. She turned to face Shakaar, who had been witness to the entire conversation. "Opinion Mr Shakaar?" she offered, "you may speak freely if you wish. Do you think he may step on Meylor's toes?"

Sonak: "Go see to your platoon, and your physical, then contact Ambassador Porett. She will be attending dinner with myself and Commander Parsons. See to it that you are available. Dismissed."
Larok: " Aye Aye Admiral." *Larok turned and headed to Marine country. As the door opened and Larok steeped through ;*
Gunny Lewis: "Attention on deck." Larok moved to stand in front of the Master Gunnery Sergent and returned his salute. "Sir all present or accounted for. Your gear has been stored, as well as the fighter."
Larok: "Thank you Gunny;" Larok turned to address the formation. "You all look like Marines; it remains to be seen if you can live up to it. If you do then you can be proud if not you will regret the moment you laid eyes on me. Dismissed" Larok turned and headed into his office to start things rolling."

Ensign Shakaar tried and succeeded in his attempt to avoid fainting. He had never been asked to offer his opinion on two, or even one, Starfleet officers. His responses to officers were generally limited to "yes sir", "no sir" and "aye sir", with some sporadic changes. None of those responses were going to work here, so something else was required.
"Well Admiral" he said, and paused, trying to give himself some time. "From my experience at the Academy and on my first ship, there is almost always tension between Marines and Security personel aboard a ship, usually because their duties can overlap. The personel in serving Tactical and Marines have a very similar temperment." Was he making any sense? He wasn't sure, but the Admiral seemed to be nodding her head in response. Nothing to do but plunge ahead.
"Conflict among commanding officers will inevitably filter down to the rank and file as they are accustomed to following orders and tend to follow the lead of their commanders, and if commanders are in conflict, the lower ranks will be as well. So, I think that as long as the roles of the Colonel and Chief of Security are clear, they will have no reason to come into conflict."

*Larok logged onto the computer system and began to review the personnel files and changes that had been implemented since his last posting here. Noting the time Larok logged off and headed for sick bay. Entering Sick Bay Larok approached the Doctor's office and knocked on the open door frame.*
Larok: "Lt Colonel Larok reporting as ordered for physical exam."

Catching up with the Vesuvius took some time, but Joseph Tras was in no hurry to get there. After taking a sabattical from Starfleet, to settle with his new son, a new assignment was a welcome change to routine. The former commanding officer looked sideways at the seven year old boy sitting next to him. The child was engrossed in one game or the other and didn't notice his father looking down on him.
Those who knew Tras, would likely tell him that he'd gone mellow over the past years, especially since his command style had been very strict and zero-tolerance. He used to yell at his crew, and literally fight out arguments right in the middle of the bridge. Such a style had eventually cost him his command, the fact that he used his mission orders and his ship to rescue his mother from the claws of a non-Federation species, who had in fact lured him there.
Yet, he knew he'd grown milder to those around him. Especially since he'd grown more confident and less eager to prove himself. After all, at his age, what did he have to prove? Quietly he ruffled Stefano's hair, laughing softly. Yes, he had gone mild. And he lost the drive to go after command positions. No, he was quite content with the assistant position, despite his senior rank. It would allow him time to spend time with Stefano, who'd only been with him for little over a year. He had adopted the child thirteen months ago, on his own after discovering the boy in an orphanage on Earth. He had taught the boy sign-language to communicate with him, as Tras still couldn't hear very well.
Their transport docked with the Vesuvius and the two passengers were let off to board the large Somma class vessel. Only now did Stefano look up from his game. "Dad?" Large, dark brown eyes peered up at him from under long, dark lashes. "Is this our home now?"
Joseph Tras nodded. "Yes son, this is our home now. And there's someone whom I'll need to say hello to for certain. Remember I told you about the Scavenger crew?" The boy nodded. "A former crewmember is now the first officer here." He smiled. "And there are children your age too. The admiral has children your age, perhaps they'll play with you."
"But they're Vulcan," the child complained. "Vulcans are no fun to play with."
"You won't know until you give it a chance." The pair stepped into the turbolift. "Bridge." He looked down on his son. "There are other children too." They stepped off on the bridge and Tras looked around for Parsons.
Smiling, he stepped down to the command center and smartly saluted. "Commander Joseph Tras, assistant operations chief reporting in," he rattled off, while keeping his eyes fixed on Parsons. "May I introduce my son Stefano?" He war certain Parsons would remember that he wasn't married or otherwise involved with anyone, while assigned to either Scavenger or South Carolina. "How have you been sir? How long has it been? Three years?"

"I agree," the Vulcan replied after her Vulcan marine officer had departed the readyroom. She had almost forgotten about her science chief's presence, but not quite. "I am certain Commander Meylor and Colonel Larok will be able to work together. Meylor is responsible for the crew's safety, while Larok will take care of the dignitaries' safety."
She paused. "How much do you know about Romulan and Cardassian relations?" she finally asked, "not taking into account several undercover operations to get a glance at eachother's secrets."
[Shakaar]
The admiral rose from her seat and walked back to the bridge. She stood into the doorway of her readyroom, effectively but not intentionally blocking Shakaar's path. She studied the newcomer, who seemed to beeline straight for Parsons and to her, it seemed as though the new arrival knew Parsons, possibly from a previous assignment.
Sonak knew that Parsons had come from the Scavenger, before being assigned as her first officer on the Vesuvius. "I was not aware we were expecting more new crew," she murmured, for Shakaar to overhear, "did you catch anything on subspace chatter?"
[Shakaar]
She walked onto the bridge. "Mister Parsons, who is this person?" she demanded, gesturing at Commander Tras, "and what is he doing here?"

Adam was in command on the bridge, when he saw a familiar face approach. It was Joseph Tras, a Starfleet Commander that Parsons had served with on the USS Scavenger. The Scavenger was Adam's first posting as XO under Captain Luke Drago. Tras had been short tempered and had commanded the Scavenger before Drago. Tras had gotten himself into some kind of trouble before Parsons was assigned to the ship. The former captain had been broken by Starfleet for some kind of misconduct. Adam had only recently learned of Tras' assignment to the Vesuvius as Assistant Chief of Operations. The Vesuvius First Officer had no idea what to expect from this new addition to the crew, but he smiled as Tras approached.
"Commander Joseph Tras, assistant operations chief reporting in. May I introduce my son Stefano? How have you been sir? How long has it been? Three years?"
"Good to see you again, Commander," Adam felt like he was insulting the man, but that was his rank, and Parsons didn't really know what to call him. He couldn't remember whether he went by Joe or Joseph, and the man was a somewhat disagreeable sort in Adam's memory. "Yes, nice to meet you Stefano. I served with your father on the USS Scavenger." Looking up at Tras, "I don't remember having met your family before?"
<TAG Tras>
"Well I would say it has been a couple years. I have been well, and you? What has Joseph Tras been up to?" Parsons asked with genuine interest.
<TAG Tras>
Adam had not noticed the Admiral appear in the doorway of her readyroom. "Mister Parsons, who is this person?" Sonak asked motioning toward Tras, "and what is he doing here?"
"Admiral, this is Commander Joseph Tras. We served together on the Scavenger. His orders were transmitted to the bridge when he arrived a few moments ago. It would appear he has been assigned our new Assistant Chief of Operations. I assumed you knew," Parsons said, a bit puzzled now.

Looking up at Tras, "I don't remember having met your family before?"
"You may have met my mother," Tras replied solemnly, "though that was possibly before you came aboard. It was the mission that caused my removal from command of the Scavenger. I adopted Stefano a year ago, so no you wouldn't have met my son before."
The seven year old smiled up at Adam, his eyes wide in awe. Yet there was a certain shyness to he boy, the way he clung to his father, hiding behind the man's wiry frame.
"Well I would say it has been a couple years. I have been well, and you? What has Joseph Tras been up to?" Parsons asked with genuine interest.
"Not much. Working my way back into Starfleet's good graces, though I took a year off to care for my son and make him feel at home and comfortable." He ruffled the boy's hair. "He had been through quite a lot but he's adjusted now. I asked Starfleet to find me a ship where I could take my boy with me. A ship that would have crew with children. I hadn't realised that I'd find you here, before I reviewed the manifest on my way here."
Joseph Tras smiled. "It was a nice surprise, to say the least."
One hand on the boy's shoulder to keep him from bolting at the sight of the Vulcan admiral, Tras saluted smartly. "Commander Joseph Tras, reporting in ma'am," he added to Parson's summary, "this is my son Stefano." He could see that the woman didn't approve of children on her bridge. The sharpness of the tone to her voice had been hard to miss, despite his lack of normal hearing.
Stefano looked up, signing a question at his father, fearful to ask it out loud.
Jospeh signed an answer back, though his attention remained on Parsons and the admiral. "Where may I find the children's playground ma'am. I believe it might be best to see to my son first, before starting my first shift. I'd like to see him settled in first, for fear of feelings of abandonment."
He turned back to Parsons, offering a brief smile. "It was good to see you again sir." It was obvious the former captain had changed, a great deal. The harshness was out of his voice, and there was a certain friendliness and openness to his expression now.

Shakaar was starting to feel a little trapped as he stood in the Admiral's ready room. She was very quiet, but didn't seem to inclined to give him permission to leave after his comments regarding the interaction of Starfleet Marine and Security personel. She glanced up, almost seemed surprised that he was there and said "How much do you know about Romulan and Cardassian relations? Not taking into account several undercover operations to get a glance at each other's secrets"
The Bajoran ensign was going to have to dig into his memories of the Academy for an answer to this question. They had spent an entire semester going over the tactics, strategies and intrigues of the Dominion War.
"As I recall Admiral, historically there has been very little contact between the Cardassians and the Romulans. They are on opposing sides of the Alpha Quadrant, with the Federation in between them as a buffer."
Shakaar thought for a moment. They had spent a day on this in his Dominion War Strategies and Intelligence class. "During the Dominion War, there were rumours of some kind of an agreement or alliance between the Cardassians and the Romulans, specifically between the intelligence services. It may have been as little as sharing information, but there were vague reports of intelligence and sabotage operations behind Dominion lines that were attributed to the agreement betweent the Tal Shiar and the Obsidian Order. The result of this agreement was the debacle at the Founder's homeworld, where a fleet of cloaked Romulan and Cardassian ships created by the Tal Shiar and the Obsidian Order was destroyed in a trap laid by the Founders. After that, the Obsidian Order was disbanded. This loss led to the eventual invasion of Cardassia Prime by the Dominion."
The Admiral nodded at Shakaar's recital, rose from her seat and walked back to the bridge. She stood into the doorway of her ready room. She seemed very interested in something, but Shakaar couldn't see it from where he was. He manuevered so that he could see over her shoulder. There was an officer on the bridge that he didn't recognize from his review of the crew manifest.
The Admiral gestured at him to come closer. When he did, she murmured "I was not aware we were expecting more new crew, did you catch anything on subspace chatter?"
"No ma'am" he replied, "but that kind of information usually doesn't come across my console."
The admiral proceeded onto the bridge to talk to the newcomer, which gave the Science officer the opportunity to leave the Ready Room and head back to his station. As he walked toward it, he saw that there were two orange lights flashing.
Frowning slightly, Shakaar unlocked his console and started analyzing, trying to figure out what was going on. Once he had tracked down the problem, he was extremely surprised and decided to isolate the problem before reporting it. It took several minutes to figure it out, and when he did, he turned away from his console towards the command chair and said "Admiral, was there a destination change to our mission that didn't get passed on to me?"
<Sonak>
"Yes ma'am" Shakaar replied. "The position of Federation ships is generally calculated based on data passed on by a network of Federation beacons that broadcast information on their location, gravimetric changes, temporal anomalies and the like. The Vesuvius bases it's position largely on data from the closest Federation beacons. Right now, the ship's computer says we're here." Shakaar pulled up a sector map and placed the course and present location of the Vesuvius on the map.
"However, the ship also just had an upgrade to it's tomographic imaging scanner and it requires calibration, which we started about an hour ago. This involves making detailed distance measurements of known stars based on standard locational data, which is not provided by the Federation beacons. The scanner says we're here." The monitor showed that they were only a few degrees from their correct location, but then Shakaar put up the projected course of the ship, and they were going to end up a significant distance away from where they were supposed to be, and very, very deep inside Romulan space.
<Sonak>
"I'm not sure Admiral, but I have double checked the scanner and it seems to be functioning properly. Assuming that it is, either someone has moved the two stars that we were scanning, we are receiving incorrect data from the Federation beacons, or the data is being corrupted somehow here on the ship."

Looking up at her office door as she heard a new voice she gave a slight not to indicate he was talking to the right person.
"Lt Colonel Larok reporting as ordered for physical exam."
She looked back down at the PaDD she as reading and stated rather bluntly. “You are supposed to report to me before your Marines Colonel.. were you infected with anything you could have spread it across the Marine detachment by now.. Medical protocols are in place for a reason.. and I have neither the time nor patience to track people down.”
She looked up from the PaDD and added. “As it happens the time I put aside for you has now elapsed, and I have other things on my plate.. Doctor Newkirk will see you.” She pointed the man sat at the side of her office who stood at the mention of his name.
He motioned for the Colonel to follow him back out into main sickbay. Once out of earshot of Kennedy’s office he said. “Apologies Colonel, Doctor Kennedy can be abrupt at times, and she is under extra stress these last few days.” He motioned for the Bio-Bed and picked up a tricorder.
‘Any medical conditions, or injuries not listed in your file Colonel?”

“Well you are fit for duty Colonel.. And Welcome aboard.”

"Admiral, was there a destination change to our mission that didn't get passed on to me?"
"Destination change?" the Vulcan replied, barely able to hide her surprise at the message, while still being annoyed over having a child on the bridge without prior authorisation.
"Yes ma'am" Shakaar replied. (And proceeded to explain what he meant)
Having no experience in operations or even navigation, Sonak had to take his word for it. "Mr Gatsby, can you confirm this?" she called over to the helmsman, while keeping her eyes on the science chief. "Are you certain this discrepancy is correct?" she queried, while leaning over to better study the readings.
[Gatsby]
"I'm not sure Admiral, but I have double checked the scanner and it seems to be functioning properly. Assuming that it is, either someone has moved the two stars that we were scanning, we are receiving incorrect data from the Federation beacons, or the data is being corrupted somehow here on the ship."
"I doubt that stars can be moved just like that ensign," the Vulcan chuckled, clearly bemused. She arched an eyebrow as she heard the child laugh softly to himself, but chose to ignore it for now. The newcomer had sped over to the operations station, his gaze intent on the console as his hands flew over the controls. "Ensign, why not check with Commander Tras, and work together on finding a solution to our scanner problem."
[Shakaar]
She turned to her first officer. "Signal the Romulan ambassador and inform her we shall be late for our rendezvous. And call the Cardassian ambassador to the bridge, she may wish to be informed as well." She tapped her combadge. "Doctor, are you done with Colonel Larok yet? I may need his presence on the bridge, there may be trouble afoot."
[Parsons/Kennedy/Larok]
(we seem to have lost Meylor. Larok, please cover security as well for now. We'll presume Meylor has gone mia for now, but haven't noticed it yet because he was conveniently off duty)

"Admiral, priority one message coming in," Lieutenant Thorad called down from OPS. His antennae swayed in surprise as he saw the identification tag. "Diplomatic ma'am," he added.
Sonak turned to look up at him. "By all means, put it on screen," she ordered, having expected a message from the Romulan diplomat by now.
(Hint Gatsby)
"I can't ma'am," the poor Andorian replied, "it's not flagged for you, it's flagged for Doctor Kennedy. To be handed to her in person."
Arching an eyebrow, the Vulcan regarded the assistant operations chief with a hint of surprise. "In person?"
"Yes ma'am. Not the message you expected I'm sure, but this is from one Ambassador Tedak, assigned to IRW S'harien. Addressed to Doctor Kerry-Anne Kennedy. Priority one."
"Well then, download it onto a PADD and hand it to me. I shall deliver it personally." A few seconds later she was handed the PADD. "Commander Parsons, you have the bridge. Commander Traks with me, you may as well report for your physical. The boy as well."
"The boy has a name admiral," the commander in question returned, "his name is Stefano."
"Well then Stefano, please join us." She had no time for semantics. Not waiting for the pair to join her, she stepped into the turbolift. Yet, if she wanted them to follow, she had to hold the car for them to enter.
--
"Doctor, I have a message for you," Sonak called as she entered sickbay, "seems you are important to one Romulan diplomat?" She smiled ever so slightly as she handed over the PADD. "Also, I have one Commander Joseph Tras and his son Stefano for you, they need their boarding physical."
[Kennedy]
Message on PADD: My dearest Kerry-Ann,
I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that I'm out of sickbay. I've spent a day or two cooped up after severe injury. Don't be afraid, I'm fine. I had an altercation with the commanding officer, which resulted in a little dagger play, injuring us both.
I've had some bad news today. Apparently, I've been assigned to the S'harien permanently. At first they thought to assign me as first officer, but thankfully I'm spared that horrible fate. However, by some evil twist of that same fate, they assigned me as permanent liaison. I don't know when I'll be able to see you again my love, but I'll keep in touch through message. Fortunately, I can send messages on a priority and secure channel so I'll always be able to reach you.
I am looking forward to hearing from you. I do hope that admiral of yours keeps you all out of trouble. I would be very angry if I learned something happened to you, which was beyond your own immediate fault.
I'm thinking of you, always, my love.
Tedak

"Yes ma'am." Jay said as he punched in the controls, "On screen Admiral..."
The screen sparked to life, revealing a tall Romulan woman, wearing the robes the designated an Ambassador for the Romulan Empire. The woman spoke, "Greetings Admiral Reckus, I am Ambassador T'Rehu, and my government has sent me here. I am at your disposal.

"Thank you for your hospitality Admiral, I do have a college of yours onboard who wishes to speak with you." she said, stepping aside.

Kerry-Anne picked up the now filled PaDD and gave a sigh, it had taken her over an hour just to complete this on form.. although it was admittedly important. A chief Medical Officer had without a doubt the most paperwork of any department head. Not only did they have the Paperwork the other department heads had such as performance reports, reprimands and other such stuff. They had also all the medical forms, Drug usage.. every sprain, bump on the head or cat scratch had to be recorded.
This led to Kerry-Anne spending a good deal of time feeling grumpy and sorry for herself in her office, it was generally known by the medical staff that this was not the best time to bother her, and those who didn’t know very quickly learned.
She looked up and she heard someone come into her office, a wave of confusion crossed her face when she saw it was non other than Admiral Sonak. Kerry-Anne stood up and walked around her desk. “Yes Admiral.”
"Doctor, I have a message for you," the Admiral paused leaving Kerry-Anne to wonder what it was for her to come down herself.
"seems you are important to one Romulan diplomat?" She smiled ever so slightly as she handed over the PADD.
Kerry-Anne smiled widely as she grabbed to PaDD she then looked up to the Admiral and said. “Oh he and I are good friends.. If it would be permissible I would like to send a reply soon.”
She looked down at the PaDD and used her security clearance to open the file, it didn’t take long for the smile to fade away from her face to be replaced with first concern and then annoyance. “I’ll confiscate that damned blade.” She muttered to herself.
Seeing the Admiral still there she said. “Oh sorry was there something else ma’am?”
"Also, I have one Commander Joseph Tras and his son Stefano for you, they need their boarding physical." Sonak replied.
Kerry nodded albeit thinking about something else at that moment in time. “yeah I will get right on that Admiral.”
Walking out into main sickbay she looked up to see the Commander and his young son. She gave a smile despite her particularly sad mood. “Welcome aboard to the both of you.”
She motioned for the bio-beds lined up against the far wall and said. “Take a seat please gentlemen.” After they were seated she asked. “Do you or your son have any medical conditions or past injuries that I should be aware of Commander?”

*As Larok followed the Doctor into the exam room, the Doctor addressed him:*
Doctor: “Apologies Colonel, Doctor Kennedy can be abrupt at times, and she is under extra stress these last few days.”
Larok: "No need to apologies as I have been dealing with Human emotions for well over a 50 years. "
Doctor: "Any medical conditions, or injuries not listed in your file Colonel?”
Larok: "None with the exception of the discrepancy in my age. Having served on a ship for 10 years travailing near the speed of light over a hundred years passed. So while my body is 75 standard years old, I was born over a hindered and 80 years ago."
Doctor:"Well you are fit for duty Colonel.. And Welcome aboard.”
Larok:" Thank you for your time doctor." *Larok rose from the bio-bed and headed for the door when the intercom beeped.*
Sonak: "Doctor, are you done with Colonel Larok yet? I may need his presence on the bridge, there may be trouble afoot."
Larok: "Larok aye: on my way." *Larok exited the medical bay and headed for the bridge.*

Sonak turned to her first officer. "Signal the Romulan ambassador and inform her we shall be late for our rendezvous. And call the Cardassian ambassador to the bridge, she may wish to be informed as well."
"Aye Admiral," Parsons said making his way to the XO's ready room. Adam contacted the Romulan ambassador once the door slid closed and informed her of the delay with appologies. She seemed ambivelent. The Vesuvius Executive Officer then contacted the Cardassian ambassador, and explained that Admiral Sonak desired the diplomat's presence on the bridge. The Cardassian ambassador indicated that she would comply with the Admiral's request and sounded slightly intrigued. Adam then returned to the bridge.
Admiral Sonak was being handed a PADD when Adam re-entered the bridge, she left immediately via a turbolift, "Commander Parsons, you have the bridge. Commander Traks with me, you may as well report for your physical. The boy as well."
Parsons moved into the command position and the Assistant Ops Chief informed the XO of the nature of the message on the PADD. "I see," was Adam's only reply.

Ambassador Richard van Breughel regarded his Romulan companion, studying her. "What do you know of the Vesuvius and her crew?" he asked, clearly interested in her opinion. "And what do you know of the Cardassian ambassador they'll be ferrying?" Richard knew his sister's dislike of Cardassians, and her ability to work very well with Romulans when required. He chuckled, acknowledging the fact that his family was comprised of quite a mix of species, including Romulan, Human, Vulcan and since not too long ago, Betazoid. And of course mixes thereof as there were children involved.
"From the official records it seems to me that the Vesuvius is a fine ship and her commanding officer seems to have what some commanding officers call 'The Right Stuff." She said, "I do not know much about the Cardassian. Cardassian records are not as good as they used to be since the Dominion War."
"And what do you know about me?" he continued, smiling brightly. He wasn't fishing for compliments, that just wasn't his style, but he was interested to know how much his co-workers knew about him, and how much was presumed.
"You seem to be a well accomplished diplomat.." She said, "Ten years ago you received the Federation Peace medal the highest medal for a Federation citizen."
"One I was proud to receive, but I care little for awards. I care only for making the universe a safer place for our children. And I'm looking forward to debating with Ambassador Polett, from what I've heard she too is distinguished." He paused. "Do you have a family T'Rehu? A husband? Children?"
"I did..." T'Rehu said, trailing off...
The Human diplomat studied her, then reached out to touch her hand, knowing full well how dangerous it was to touch a Romulan. "I'm sorry," he told her, "I have a wife and three children, one of which is of my own blood. The other two were orphaned and we adopted them. My brother and sister have families too, my brother even got married recently. I'm shamed to admit I didn't attend his wedding."
"They were killed during the Dominion War... My four sons and my husband..." she said, "I have nothing left now, but my duty..."
Richard nodded in reply, he could understand her sadness. "I'm sorry," he repeated, "we've all lost in the war. I lost my brother in law to a conflict with Cardassians. He was murdered in cold blood." He took her hand between both his own, as he stared at her, meeting her eyes. "We'll broker this treaty," he promised, "and we'll make sure no one else gets hurt. My sister will make sure of that. This treaty will ensure that the Empire will get the supplies and help it so desperately needs, and will make sure other treaties are upheld, and offer trade opportunities."
"I know we will.." T'Rehu said, returning the stare.
Richard smiled. "Why don't we go for a drink, and we'll get to know eachother a little better, so we can improve our teamwork when the Vesuvius arrives. I know of a good ah... pub. Insofar Romulus has pubs of course."
"Alright." T'Rehu said.
Giving her a slight nod, Richard preceded her out of the spaceous conference room and led her to his favourite 'pub'. They chatted for a lengthy time, getting to know eachother better, while they waited for the Federation Starship to arrive.

** Ambassador Porett **
The deep black void of space had always given her a slight feeling of comfort; Porett sat watching the stars speed by as she had done for the last hour. Her guest quarters by request were normal Federation crew quarters, not the double sized VIP ones normally afforded esteemed guests such as Ambassadors.
However, such things did not interest her they never had, in her long years of life she had seen to much death and destruction caused by or suffered by her on people to find joy in luxuries afforded her. The room was darkened and the environmental controls changed in order of it to remain about twelve degrees hotter than the rest of the ship. Cardassians had a lower tolerance for cold than most other species and her age had only magnified that.
She would have been content to remain in that position until the ship reached it destination, however that was not to be. The door chirped and she slightly turned her head to look in it’s direction as she said. “Enter.”
She expected it to be her aide with more news of conspiracy theories or reasons why Romulans and the Federation couldn’t be trusted, she was more than a little relieved to see a young Starfleet crewman walked through the door. He snapped to attention as he said professionally. “Madame Ambassador, Admiral Sonak extends an invitation for you to dine with her tonight, also your presence has been requested on the bridge.”
She took a deep breath as she turned to take one last look out of the window, she stood and replied quietly. “Thank you, young man, you may escort me there now if it pleases you.”
He gave a curt nod before starting to lead the way. Porett was not in a talkative mood as such so the walk was generally silent, the odd glare cast her way from the Starfleet crew unnerved her slightly but she didn’t let it show.
She finally made it to the bridge to see Sonak looking down over the shoulder of what she assumed to be the helmsman and said. “You wished to see me Admiral, should I take the slowing down of the vessel to indicate we are being delayed for some reason?”
