While Adam sat in the command chair monitoring ship's systems, Larok entered the bridge via a turbolift.
Parsons stood and turned to great the Marine, "Colonel, how are you?"
<TAG Larok>
"Feel free to man the tactical station," an ensign in a security uniform moved aside in anticipation of the Colonel's acceptance.
A short while later, Admiral Reckus entered the bridge and Adam gave a short report as to the ship's status. As the Admiral looked over a bridge officer's shoulder, the Cardassian Ambassador entered the bridge.
"Welcome to the bridge Ambassador," the XO said as the Admiral turned to address the Cardassian diplomat.

** Ambassador Porett **
She smiled warmly at the Executive Officer as he gave her greeting, she thought him cute for a Human, if not young. “Thank you Commander, you and your crew have been most welcoming, our diplomatic preparation courses hardly do you justice.. I shall see to it personally that it is rectified.” She gave a polite bow of her head being the guest on their ship she felt it the polite thing to do.
She looked around the bridge and took in the sight, Cardassian ships while functional were hardly a thing of beauty but Federation ships always seemed to manage it, the crew she noticed also struck her eye, a wide variety of species all in the one small room.
She turned back to the XO and asked. “If you don’t mind Commander, I have a few questions.. for personal interest”
<Tag Parsons>
“I notice this ship features a large presence of non Human crew, while it is well known the Federation is comprised this way.. is it usual for this mix of crew or something more rare?”
<Tag Parsons>
She nodded slowly giving a moments thought, her face alive with interest almost childlike in essence, if not for her advanced age she no doubt would have looked like a child. “Interesting, I have always said much can be learned of the Federation.” She paused and gave a slight mischievous grin. “Saying that and other things landed me in prison once, our old government used to be so touchy about the Federation and the topic of Bajoran reparations.. come to think of it the new one is touchy on that last one too.” She shook her head slightly. “Once we old dogs die off things will improve, the youth will too see peace in our time.”
She stepped down into the middle command section of the bridge and gave another smile. “But I am sure you have better things to do than listen to an old woman rant, thank you for your time Commander.”
<Tag Parsons>
She now looked to the Admiral and took on a slightly more business like smile and asked. “Please don’t stress yourselves over delays Admiral, It is a burden enough you have to do this in the first place.. we get there when we get there.” She shrugged her shoulders slightly and added. “I am not so important as to warrant it.. I am no.” She thought for a long moment and muttered to herself. “Who was the Vulcan one.” “Ah I am no Ambassador Spock as it were.”
Porett motioned to the ready room and said in a slightly lower tone, “Would you mind Admiral I would like to speak to you in private for a moment.”
<Tag>
She followed Sonak inside and waited a moment before starting. She looked somewhat uncomfortable for a moment as she spoke up. “Admiral, I read about you in our database, I hope you don’t mind standard procedure.. I am aware of your past dealings with my race.”
She paused and lowered her head slightly as she shook it. “I am aware this must be hard for you, it can’t be easy to have me on board your ship.. I question the wisdom of your superiors for making your ship do this.. I don’t expect you to forgive my people nor would I ask it of you… but for what it is worth we know our past actions have been shameful and it is something we must live with.. I am sorry to you for losses at our hands.” She looked back up and took a deep breath. “And I appreciate your offer of dinner but I don’t want to place you or any of your crew in uncomfortable situations more than they have too, and breaking bread with a Cardassian would be one of those situations.”
She gave a weak smile as she fidgeted with her hands. unsure if she had even done the right thing, if there was such a thing as the right thing in this situation.

She finally made it to the bridge to see Sonak looking down over the shoulder of what she assumed to be the helmsman and said. “You wished to see me Admiral, should I take the slowing down of the vessel to indicate we are being delayed for some reason?”
Before Sonak could respond, her first officer stepped up to the mark and struck up a conversation with the ambassador, much to her relief. When given the opportunity, however she did respond. "No ambassador, we seem to be experiencing a malfunction in our navigational systems. I regret to inform you that we shall arrive at our destination with an as yet unknown delay."
The Vulcan admiral merely arched an eyebrow in response, not quite sure what the woman was getting at.
Porett motioned to the ready room and said in a slightly lower tone, “Would you mind Admiral I would like to speak to you in private for a moment.”
Did she mind? Yes, she did, she had no desire to be alone in one room with one of a species she had come to hate. Sighing, she forced the negative thoughts back and nodded quietly. "My readyroom," she replied. "Parsons you have the bridge. See to it that our course is corrected, and increase speed."
She followed Sonak inside and waited a moment before starting. She looked somewhat uncomfortable for a moment as she spoke up. “Admiral, I read about you in our database, I hope you don’t mind standard procedure.. I am aware of your past dealings with my race.”
The Vulcan turned and faced the Cardassian in silence, clearly uncomfortable with their current situation. "I do not understand what you mean," she replied carefully. "Please explain.'
“And I appreciate your offer of dinner but I don’t want to place you or any of your crew in uncomfortable situations more than they have to, and breaking bread with a Cardassian would be one of those situations.”
"I appreciate your honesty," Sonak replied, relaxing ever so slightly. "You are correct, it is not easy for me, but I am trying. It is not easy to see past the hate, however illogical. However, you are not your people, and you cannot bear their guilt. Those who murdered my late husband will suffer in their own conscience, and those who murdered my unborn child and nearly killed me, have paid with their own deaths."
She paused, circling around her desk to sink down in the comfortable seat that stood behind it. Carefully, she leaned forward, placing her arms on the desk. "My crew is aware of my ... feelings." She thought it ironic, since Vulcans weren't expected to even have feelings to begin with. "I saw this mission as an opportunity to get past my personal feelings, and perhaps begin a journey of forgiveness. I cannot promise such forgiveness to your people, but I can promise that I will try to be amiable towards you, ambassador. This mission is important to the Federation, and as such, as an admiral and starship commander, I am bound by my duties to starfleet."
Sonak offered the smallest of smiles, which was rather unusual as she barely ever hinted at even possessing such emotions, when facing those that did not know her, or those she did not know well. "The offer of dinner stands. It is customary for a starship commander to invite an honoured guest into his or her home. I shall not deviate from it. Consider it a part of my journey towards healing, if you will."
She gave a weak smile as she fidgeted with her hands. unsure if she had even done the right thing, if there was such a thing as the right thing in this situation.
"As I already said, I do appreciate your honesty ambassador. It does you credit. I pray the Romulan ambassador will value such honesty as I do, for I know her Human counterpart will do." Her expression softened ever so slightly. "The Human ambassador that is her escort, is my younger brother."

**Porett**
Porett perked up a little at the Admirals response she had expected a swift response telling her to mind her own business but instead she encountered a woman not entirely unlike herself. “Yes I remember that the aide was your brother, I expect this trip shall have an upside for you after all.”
She heard the buzzer to the ready room door go and Porett slightly bowed her head and said. “I shall take my leave Admiral, I will see you at dinner.” Porett turned to leave when she almost collided with the visibly excited Bajoran doctor, who while looking flustered managed to say.
“Oh Ambassador, if you have time I need to perform a check up on you.. Standard procedure I am afraid.. You can find me in sickbay.” Kennedy said as she straightened herself up.
Porett nodded slightly and replied “We have similar procedures Doctors, I will make myself available within the hour.” Porett’s smile dropped a little when she noticed her aide standing out on the bridge giving what humans would call the ‘evil eye’ to everyone who dared look at her for more than a second.
** Legate Alanya**
The Legate slowly walked to stand next to the Federation Marine who stood overlooking a tactical console. She looked him over deeply unimpressed. She made a disapproving sigh as she remarked loudly enough to be heard. “This is the lauded Federation Marines, pathetic it’s a wonder your Federation exist to this day never mind flourish with you as their guardians.”
She shook her head in dismay as she turned to see Porett standing now behind her, her face somewhat dropped to see the older woman looking less than amused. They stood staring each other down for only a few seconds but the tension made it seem like longer, it was the classic look of Military bucking heads with the Civilain oversight that had become more prevalent in recent years on Cardassia Prime and its colonies
Porett broke the silence first that had infected the entire bridge, her own nature and her diplomatic training squared off in her mind, eventually she let appearances be damned and said simply. “Apologise Legate.”
Alanya looked positively confused by the ‘order’ and was about to protest when the look on the older diplomats face truly caught her attention. Turning around and taking a deep breath she looked to the Vulcan Marine and said simply. ‘You have my apologies Starfleet.” The last bit dripping venom. She stormed off into the waiting turbolift and held the door for Porett.
<Larok>
Porett cleared her throat and again looked like the caring old lady who wouldn’t hurt a soul and said quietly. “I apologise Colonel.. The finer arts of diplomacy are lost on my aide.” Porett walked into the waiting turbo lift and didn’t say a word until the doors closed on the pair.
<Larok>
**Kennedy**
Kennedy looked to Sonak holding the same smile of unbridled joy and anticipation. She held out a Padd to the Admiral and said. “Admiral could you have this sent back to Ambassador Tedak using the same channel it was received on, please.”
She loosened up a bit and added. “And keep it under your hat, I don’t like my business becoming idle gossip for people.” Kennedy had already been warned by one of her staff against a relationship of any kind with Tedak. And she had no doubt some others may be of the same antiquated mind set of distrusting Romulans simply because they were Romulan.
Kennedy now held a childlike grin, and held a spark in her eye as she awaited the Admirals response.
<Tag Sonak>
She turned on her heel and said “Thank you Admiral.. I should attend to our guest.” She practically skipped out of the ready room and through the bridge, stepping onto the turbo lift she cast a huge smile at the any of the crew who had followed her with their eyes as she moved through the bridge. She gave a childish wave as the doors closed on her.

I shall see to it personally that it is rectified.” She gave a polite bow of her head being the guest on their ship she felt it the polite thing to do.
Parsons returned a smile and slight nod of the head.
After looking around the bridge, the ambassador turned back to the XO and asked. “If you don’t mind Commander, I have a few questions.. for personal interest”
"Not at all, Ambassador," Adam replied.
“I notice this ship features a large presence of non Human crew, while it is well known the Federation is comprised this way.. is it usual for this mix of crew or something more rare?”
"Oh, I would say the diversity of our crew is not out of the ordinary for a federation vessel of our size and mission," Parsons stopped short of mentioning the disproportionately high number of Bajorans that currently and previously served as senior officers on the Vesuvius.
Porett nodded slowly, “Interesting, I have always said much can be learned of the Federation.” She paused and gave a slight mischievous grin.
Adam chuckled slightly.
She stepped down into the middle command section of the bridge and gave another smile. “But I am sure you have better things to do than listen to an old woman rant, thank you for your time Commander.”
With a smile Commander Parsons responded, "If only there were more senior government officials on all sides with your open-mindedness, all our societies would be better off."
"Parsons you have the bridge. See to it that our course is corrected, and increase speed," the Admiral ordered, heading to her readyroom with Ambassador Porett.
"Aye, Admiral." Commander Parsons then gave the appropriate orders to the helmsman, who made it so.
A rude comment from a Cardassian aide, peaked Parsons interest, but he did not turn around, as he had every confidence in the Marine commander. He then noticed the Ambassador emerge from her conversation with Dr. Kennedy in the doorway of the readyroom and begin glaring in the aide's direction. Adam watched out of the corner of his eye, and chose not to interfere unless the matter warranted it.
Porett broke the silence. “Apologize Legate.”
Parsons heard from behind, "You have my apologies Starfleet.” He turned to see the Legate storm off into the waiting turbolift holding the door for Porett.
"I apologize Colonel.. The finer arts of diplomacy are lost on my aide.” Porett walked into the waiting turbo lift and didn’t say another word until the doors closed.

I am moving us up a little, bringing the two groups together. Gatsby please remember to post once in a while especially your romulan NPC. I honestly don't mind us being very slow, but a post once in a while from everyone would keep us all inspired, hopefully. I'm here, just having serious inspiration issues for this character, so any challenge is very very welcome
~Three days later~
After several consecutive navigations malfunctions, which were fortunately easily recovered, the Vesuvius finally had crossed into Romulan space. The starship went cloaked, though it was known they had entered the Empire's spacial territory, and had done so with express permission.
Rear Admiral Sonak Reckus had just thought it wiser to remain cloaked, lest the factions that opposed these negotiations would take matters into their own hands, and attack the vessel. The past three days had passed uneventful, and she had even found herself drawn to their Cardassian guest.
Secretly, she was fairly pleased with her progress in dealing with the Cardassian, having discovered that this woman was in no way like the ones who had tortured her, or the ones who had aided in the murder of her first husband. She glanced sideways to see the Cardassian diplomat engaged in small talk with one of the junior officers.
"Commander Parsons, time to rendez-vous with Romulan Valdore?" The name of the Valdore class vessel hadn't been disclosed to them, even though she knew Richard could've easily have transmitted it to her. That he hadn't spoke volumes on his loyalty towards the Empire, and the information he had been entrusted with. She only hoped that Porett's Romulan counterpart would be just as pleasant to deal with.
She waited for her first officer to provide her with the required data. "Ensign Shakaar, disengage cloaking device and transmit our identification codes. Let them see us and offer them a chance to scan us for anything they may wish to scan for. We carry nothing that would endanger this mission, but let them verify."
The Vulcan tapped her combadge. "Doctor Kennedy, report to the bridge." She wondered whether her doctor had heard anything from her diplomatic friend again, then chided herself for her curiosity. Whatever dealings Kennedy had with the disgraced diplomat, was her own business. Yet, Sonak had heard that the man had been shipped off to a Valdore class vessel, under the command of Commander Echal. She remembered the name, and she was certain Richard would remember as well. For Kennedy's sake, she hoped the man kept his wits about him, and did nothing to endanger himself or their new-found relationship. She had no desire to find her doctor heart-broken, or grieving his death.
"Lieutenant Gatsby, drop to impulse power and follow any course corrections that get transmitted to us. Do not question the received information."
She turned and smiled as she saw Jatan enter the bridge. She knew he was looking forward to spending some time with his brother-in-law, whom none of them got to see much of. She found herself wishing that Nathan was here to enjoy this little family reunion, even though Richard had told her that he would be spending some time in Federation space and may find the time to go visit him on the Jefferson. Sonak knew Nathan would very much enjoy seeing his baby brother again, even if the younger man's family would not be with him.

"Aye, Admiral, shall we decloak, or will they show themselves first?"
The Admiral reviewed the information on the ship's present position and satus provided by her first officer before ordering the cloak dropped. Ensign Shakaar then transmitted the Vesuvius' identification codes.
After about a minute, Parsons spoke up, "perhaps we are early?" As the XO finished his sentence a Romulan ship, Valdore class, slowly appeared off of the Federation ship's starboard bow. The crew of the Vesuvius watched and waited with tense anticipation until the identification codes were returned.
The Romulan ship transmitte course and heading a short time later and the Vesuvius matched her course and speed, heading deeper into Romulan space toward the site designated for the negotiations.

**Kennedy**
Sickbay had been nice and quite, only two minor cases in the past three days. Kennedy had been given the time to finish this week paper work and more, Of course being in unfamiliar Romulan territory made some people a bit jumpy even Kennedy couldn’t deny it made her a little tense.
Sitting behind her desk she savoured the aroma her coffee was giving off, she could have drifted off the sleep as she leaned back in the high backed chair. Her eyes snapped open when Sonak’s voice came over the comm. Channel calling her to the bridge.
She grumbled to herself as she finished her coffee and straightened her uniform, she didn’t know why she was needed on the bridge. Diplomatic matters had little to do with her but went non the less.
She stepped off the turbolift and onto the bridge her eyes immediately spotted the Romulan ship on the view screen. “Admiral you called for me?” she asked not taking her eyes off the view screen.

**Ambassador Porett**
“Well most of the archeological sites were destroyed by the Dominion, but some of them survived.. We are discussing arrangements to have them opened for some foreign experts, a small gesture of faith between governments.. I will make some calls and see if we can’t slip you in.” She patted the young science officers shoulder and gave a small smile before looking to the middle of the bridge were the Admiral and her crew discussed the Romulan ship.
Porett didn’t seem bothered about it. She had dealt with the Romulans enough to know that they would be kept waiting, a power play by the Romulans to show who was in charge. The Cardassians allowed the Romulans that little pleasure when dealing with them, it made them easier to deal with in the negotiations.
Porett walked over to Sonak and said. “Don’t seem over eager Admiral send your requests once and only once.. if you seem eager their Commander will keep you waiting on principle.”
She looked behind to see the Doctor she had met a couple of days ago walk in and announce her presence to the Admiral.
<Tag>
**Legate Alyana**
Alyana crawled through the Jefferies tube in the lower decks of the ship, close to the engineering department. Her tricorder had been specially remodified to project a field to hide her life sign, She had an important agenda to fulfil and she wasn’t about to let the Federation fools or her traitorous Ambassador deal away more Cardassian freedoms. Luckily for her the Ambassador had been good for one thing, her Federation love affair had made the crew lenient on watching her.
Finally Alyana found the power relay that had eluded her for the past hour, she pried the cover off and looked carefully at the inside. Pulling out her tricorder she input a few commands and it went to work decrypting the password lockouts.
It seemed to take forever but in reality it took only ten minutes the Tricorder beeped and she had limited access. Quickly she re- routed power from non critical systems bit by bit as not to be noticed. She funnelled the power to the forward phaser arrays, once enough power had been transferred the arrays would power up without authorisation from the bridge. If enough power built up they would either fire or cause an explosion.. Alyana didn’t care which she had a good idea when she first set off that she wouldn’t be going back.
**Porett**
A small alarm went off and Porett looked around, to see one of the Tactical officers announce nervously. “Forward Phaser arrays have powered up!” he tapped furuisly at the console. “The order didn’t come from this terminal.”
Porett spun around to look at Sonak and asked. “What are you doing!.. This took months to arrange any aggressive moves will set us back months!”

.:.Starbase 47.:.
Lieutenant James Fire had been pinned inside his quarters for more then a few days at this point. The delight on his face was no longer there and despite his last name the fire was away. He'd learned some terrible truthes about his family's history, and his true last name. While he sat poring over more information about the Cohen name he had a chime at the door.
"Enter please." He replied without getting up, he did however turn and face the door as a young crewman of the starbase entered his quarters.
"Your new orders sir."
James took them and nodded for the crewman to leave. Afterwards he looked at it, having requested transfer again. It seemed that he was slowly proving that he could not stay in one place too long since leaving the El'Salvador. The only problem was the USS Vesuvius-A his new command was in Romulan space. There was no way for him to reach them any time soon. He looked over the reports carefully they'd just made it probably the day prior. But, there was no way to be certain.
So the young officer was stuck at Starbase 47 until he could arrange transport to his new ship. But, that would take some time, and according to personnel he was better off staying at the Starbase. Though he did put in a request for the first warp five capable shuttle to take him to his new destination.
.:.USS Vesuvius; Main Engineering.:.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Machi, a bolian male officer, stood in engineering. He'd been acting Chief Engineer since a new officer had been assigned. But, of course being in Romulan space and too far away from Starbase 47 his new supervisor could not make the journey.
At the same time they'd been dealing with random power fluxuations throughout the ship. Suddenly the power to the forward phaser banks activated. "Ensign O'Malley what is going on? The Lieutenant shouted at the weapons control officer.
O'Malley looked down, "Somebody is transferring power from our minor systems into our forward phaser banks."
Machi looked towards him, "Take them offline NOW ensign!" He hollered across engineering as several concerned officers and enlisted began to scramble.
O'Malley shook his head trying hard to override, "Sir I cannot the system will not comply!" The red headed Irishman called back continuing to try and do a manual shutdown, but he could not bypass the lockout.
"Sir, they are transferring the power too quickly the system is going to overload from this-" The panel along the bulkhead where O'Malley was working exploded in a molten rain of sparks. The young officer was sent hurtling towards the deckplate and severaly burned on the ground.
Lieutenant Machi bolted for the Ensign, pressing his commbadge as he went, "Medical emergency Main Engineering!" He shouted then double tapped his commbadge just as he got next to the red headed officer. He did feel a pulse which was good, it meant that the ensign suffered some major burns and that was it, but the impact left him unconscience. "Main Engineering to Bridge, somebody, or something is draining power from our minor systems into our forward phaser banks."
<tag Sorak/bridge/sickbay>
He continued, "Admiral, the system overloaded, we cannot control it from down here, but we will continue to try and shut down systems where the power drain is coming from. But, by now it may be too late."

“Don’t seem over eager Admiral send your requests once and only once.. if you seem eager their Commander will keep you waiting on principle.”
The Vulcan almost rolled her eyes at the Cardassian. “I have dealt with Romulans before madam Ambassador. My sister in law is one, my nephews and niece are half Romulan. Believe it or not, I actually do have friends in the Empire. I do know how to deal with a Romulan.”
She cast the Cardassian a friendly smile, one of her rare public smiles. Despite her hate against the species in general, she had started to believe that not all Cardassians were the same, and this woman had a great deal to do with that belief. Porett seemed open and friendly, and above all, very understanding of her position, and she appreciated that.
“Forward Phaser arrays have powered up!” he tapped furuisly at the console. “The order didn’t come from this terminal.”
“They what!” Sonak stared at the tactical officer in open disbelief. “If not from your terminal where did that order come from. Talk to me ensign, track that order down!”
Porett spun around to look at Sonak and asked. “What are you doing!.. This took months to arrange any aggressive moves will set us back months!”
“If he says he did not open fire, then I believe him ambassador. Starfleet does not open fire without provocation, and we were not provoked. You saw yourself that he did not touch that fire button, and you did not hear me give any order to open fire. My brother is on that vessel, as is our contact. Do you truly believe that I would endanger a possible treaty with the Romulans as well as the Cardassians? If you do, you give me too little credit.”
She was angry, and it showed. Her patience had been driven to it's limit at last, and she was infuriated. It didn't help that engineering suddenly contacted the bridge with some very unwelcome, yet very needed information
"Main Engineering to Bridge, somebody, or something is draining power from our minor systems into our forward phaser banks."
“Shut it down!” she all but shouted. Something was very wrong, all her senses were on alert now and she could practically feel and sense the rising tension on the bridge. She could tell the reporting engineer wasn't done with his report yet, so she waited, impatiently, for the man to continue.
He continued, "Admiral, the system overloaded, we cannot control it from down here, but we will continue to try and shut down systems where the power drain is coming from. But, by now it may be too late."
“Dump the core if you have to,” Sonak ordered, “and prepare for multi vector assault mode. If the problem comes from Minerva we will soon find out. Commander Parsons, report to Mercury.” She tapped her combadge. “Commander Tras, report to Discordia and prepare to move the module between us and the Romulan vessel. If all else fails, Discordia will take the fire, protecting the other vessel.”
[fire, parsons, tras]
She spun to look at Porett. “I will sacrifice my own vessel, before I let anything happen to them,” she insisted, then tapped her combadge. “Doctor Kennedy, we have a situation, report to engineering immediately. Report as soon as you arrive.”
[kennedy]
“Open hailing frequencies to the Romulan vessel.”
“Hailing frequencies open,” Thorad reported from OPS. “I have the Romulan Ambassador speaking.”
[tag Romulan Ambassasdor] (Andae Blakus)
“We have a situation ambassador. I believe I am dealing with an attempt at sabotage. We are experiencing a malfunction in our weapons array. I am preparing to move my tertiary module in between our vessels, to catch any phaser fire that may commence. I strongly recommend you raise your shields just in case.” She looked calm but she felt far from. “I am by no means attempting to fire on you ma'am. If you do not believe me, you can ask your Human associate.”
[tag Romulan Ambassador]
Beside the Romulan ambassador, Ambassador Richard van Breughel nodded. “My sister doesn't lie ambassador,” he stated gravely, “if she says she wouldn't fire, she wouldn't. If she says that someone is committing sabotage, then I believe her. If you won't believe her, then believe me. I know her better than anyone, apart from my older brother.”
[tag Romulan Ambassador, Porett]
“Thank you Richard,” Sonak spoke gravely, “I knew I could count on you. Trust me when I say that we are doing everything we can to track down the saboteur, and this individual will be severely punished.”
(if anyone wants to NPC security guards, by all means. Confer with Kennedy to see if she wants the aide caught)

“Dump the core if you have to."
Lieutenant Machi heard this and shook his head that was the last thing he wanted to do. "Ensign Roberts, shut down all non vital systems. Leave our defenses, life support, and engines online."
Ensign Roberts the young black haired male human nodded, "Yes Sir!" He yelled back as he dashed over to the panel and began to rapidly turn each system off. Within moments whoever was draining power from the other systems would see that they were no longer online. "Done!"
Machi nodded, "Good, Crewman Sullivan trace where the drain originated. It should be in the computer's logs with all energy transfers."
Sullivan nodded she then turned her attention to her station. "Sir it's coming from a jefferies tube about seventeen clicks from main engineering. I cannot pinpoint it's exact location."
Machi nodded once more as he continued to kneel next to the young irish ensign that was thankfully still alive. He then smiled, "Man your stations this will get ugly before it's all over."
.:.Starbase 47.:.
James Patrick Fire had recieved his orders, but was unable to travel to the ship. That did little in the way of comforting him, they were stuck out in Romulan territory without a chief engineering officer. That made him worry and he continued to pace the deck at his feet. When another chime came at his door, he hoped somewhere that they'd found transport to the ship.
"Enter please."
Another officer, an Ensign, entered. "Lieutenant here is your name change paperwork. You are now officially Lieutenant James Cohen."
James took the PADD and nodded for the Ensign to leave his quarters. Wel that was some good news he assumed...
((Will make the changes at the end of this mission))

**Kennedy** She was on the turbolift going back down to sickbay when the comm. Channel came to life with the Admirals voice informing her that there was an injured crewman in Engineering. She acknowledged the call and put on of her own into sickbay.
“Medical Emergency in Engineering, Nursing contingent there on the double.”
She then remembered that her turbolift didn’t read minds and hadn’t anticipated her need of redirection. “Halt turbolift!.” It came to a stop and then she said. “Engineering.”
It started again and Kennedy got herself in the proper mental state to deal with the medical crisis, it had been a few days since anything more major than a physical had needed to be done and that kind of grunt work left a doctor a little unprepared mentally for the big things.
**Porett**
“I apologise Admiral.. I know you wouldn’t do this intentionally.” She bowed her head in apology. She had let her own emotions take over, her desire and need to see peace had lead her to accuse someone of something awful. And on the woman’s own bridge no less.
Porett stood in silence as she watched the events unfold, the ordering of the ship to be split up and one piece moved in front of the other in case the phasers did fire.
After Sonak had finished speaking Porett stepped forward and addressed the Romulan Ambassador. “Ambassador, this is a troubling situation of which I am positive is not of the Federations doing, and I can assure you is not of mine.. none of us here would risk an incident with two galactic superpowers.. I ask for patience until this is resolved and that it does not interfere with the negotiations.. surely you must agree for the sake of peace.”
Tag Romulan Ambassador.
*Alyana*
She crawled franticly out of the Jefferies tube, she had done what she considered her duty. The civilian government had o right to bargain away what was again becoming the might of the Cardassian military. She was three metres to freedom when the hatch she was crawling towards opened and the faces to two security officers glared at her.
She considered ways to fight out of it but they would be useless and her job had been done. She surrendered to them, what happened to her now was of no concern.
**Porett**
For the moment the hailing frequency had been closed, the image of a section of the ship guarding the Romulan vessel showed on the screen. Porett looked to Sonak and said softly.
“Admiral like you I am willing to die to keep the peace, but I request permission to send a message to my government.. should we need to sacrifice ourselves I need them to know my death wasn’t yours or the Romulans doing.. if they believed otherwise it could set diplomatic relations back decades.. and may even begin open hostilities again.”
<Tag Sonak>
Porett bowed her head in thanks and moved to a terminal to begin typing out her message to be sent out. Not three minutes later two security officers walked onto the bridge and looked to Porett. Their hands ready to grab their phasers.
“Madame Ambassador.. step away from the console please.”
She turned and looked somewhat irked. “What is the meaning of this?... you threaten an Ambassador?”
One of the security officers turned and looked to the Admiral and said. “Ma’am we caught her aide in the Jefferies tube.. she was the one tampering with out systems.. we need to be sure the Ambassador isn’t a part of her plans.”

.:.Starbase 47.:.
.:.Earlier.:.
Xavier Cohen and Brandon Cohen looked at the datapad carefully examining it one last time. Xavier looked at his brother, "James Fire son of David..."
Brandon nodded, "He changed his name to Cohen back to the family name."
Xavier looked at his brother again sideways this time then peered towards the datapad, "I presumed that is why we were dispatched anyway correct?"
Brandon nodded.
"I assumed as much, he does not know does he. Did Gregory deliver the package?"
Brandon nodded again.
"Very good. We will contact our little James, we will finally have what we have been after. Someone in the Federation ever since father was killed..."
Brandon smiled demonically, "Yes, but father was not forced into the situation either once a Cohen always a Cohen. Or, so they say..."
"Yes, but he may have Cohen blood, but he is far from being a Cohen brother."
Both men nodded in agreement, there was something odd about the way they looked at each other across the table inside the promenade.
.:.Present.:.
James went to his door to go and perhaps run or something when he found another Crewman carrying two PADDS for him with information. He activated the first one;
Lieutenant James Fire,
You are hereby promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander with all responsibilities and priveledges of the rank you have been given. Congratulations!
Section Admiral Paul Drew
He turned entering his room, he would create the new hollow pip. While entering his quarters once more he flipped the next PADD on. It was not starfleet issue which made him wonder, but he turned it on regardless.
James,
We have been watching you closely since you put in a name request. There are some things that we require of you, meet us in the abandoned portion of the promenade. Do not be late, oh yes and if you refuse to go along with what we require know that we have your sister, and her life hangs in the balance. Come alone, and not in your uniform!
There wasn't a signature on the bottom, and he had dropped the datapad quickly. He couldn't go to anyone not wishing to risk his sister's life. Instead he changed his clothes quickly forgetting about the promotion for a moment. He needed to go quickly, and find out what was going on.
.:.Main Engineering.:.
Lieutenant Machi continued to remain by the side of Ensign O'Malley who remained severely burned as several medics and the CMO came charging into engineering and approached them. He backed away, the ensign had second degree burns along his face, arms, and hands. The front of his uniform was singed, but it didn't cut all the way through his uniform.
Crewman Sullivan looked surprised, "Sir it didn't do any good! The build up on our forward phaser is still present."
Machi shook his head, "No shut it down now!"
"I cannot the system shutdown would be catastrophic."
"I don't care if the whole system blows out do it now!"
Sullivan worked his fingers over the controls quickly, but it was too late the built up energy fired off. "Sir..." He said weakly.
.:.Bridge.:.
The engineering officer on the bridge watched his sensor readout as the blast from their ship was fired it went six meters above the Romulan vessel, and grazed the top most point of their shields. "Admiral the phaser fire missed the Romulan ship by six meters. It grazed the top portion of their shields!"

Parsons walked speedily to a console behind the Tactical station to assist the tactical officer.
An exchange between Ambassador Porett and the Admiral followed. They were interrupted by a message from engineering.
"Yes Ma'am, Commander Parsons responded. Tapping his combadge and declaring red alert, "All personnel prepare for emergency multi vector assault mode. Report to your assigned sections immediately." The turbolift stopped a short time later on the bridge of the Mercury and Parsons stood before the command chair as the emergency crew poured in. Helm prepare to separate.
"Aye, Sir," the CONN officer replied sliding into her chair.
As soon as the tertiary section had separated, the Mercury did so as well. "Take up position on Minerva's port side. Ensure that Discordia is blocking a shot from our section as well." "Aye, Sir," the helm officer confirmed.
"Admiral, Mercury reporting ready at port, awaiting orders," Parsons signaled.
"Commander, Minerva fired a phaser burst before Discordia was in position, but it just glanced off their shields, " the Mercury's tactical officer reported.
"Lock phasers on this power coupling running between the Minverva's phaser banks," Parsons said showing the tactical officer a point on the schematic that had been brought up on main viewer.
"But Commander"...
"Follow your orders, Lieutenant," the XO barked cutting the tactical officer off.
"Admiral, sensors report that the Minerva fired on the Romulan vessel, no damage. Please report on the situation there.''

.:.Previously; Valdore Vessel.:.
The tactical officer watched his station carefully they had barely fallen out of warp when his sensors indicated that there was a power up along the Vesuvius's phaser banks. "Sir...They are powering up phasers!"
Ambassador T'Rehu looked behind her in utter disbelief, "WHAT?"
=^=Romulan Vessel this is the USS Vesuvius...=^=
T'Rehu stepped forward as communications were open, "You better have a good reason for this Admiral!?!"
=^=“We have a situation ambassador. If you do not believe me, you can ask your Human associate.”=^=
The Ambassador looked in utter disbelief still as she listened to the reply.
She heard the reply then nodded in agreement, "I trust you...Both of you." Though the reply was rather sincere it would not sound that way.
The tactical officer looked up from his console "They are breaking apart placing themselves in a defensive position around us."
=^=“Ambassador, this is a troubling situation of which I am positive is not of the Federations doing, and I can assure you is not of mine.. none of us here would risk an incident with two galactic superpowers.. I ask for patience until this is resolved and that it does not interfere with the negotiations.. surely you must agree for the sake of peace.” =^=
T'Rehu nodded, "You better get it solved then..." Came a rather monotone reply as the Ambassador didn't know what else to say.
.:.Present; Valadore Vessel.:.
The tactical officer continued to watch as the situation had continued to escalate into what it was now. Then suddenly the crimson blast streaked across the starry background of the viewer. "Near miss..." He replied as their ship shook slightly.
Then his sensors picked up something strange, suddenly shortly after what he presumed was a sensor malfunction he looked up at the viewer his jaw dropping at the mere sight of it. "Commander three Valadore vessels have just decloaked off our starboard quarter...They are hailing us, and the Federation vessel."
The Sub Commander stood, "On screen!"
<tag Sonak/Parsons>
A Romulan woman appeared on the screen, "I am Commander S'aehri. I am sorry Starfleet, but I cannot allow these negotiations to continue lower your shields and prepare to be boarded your ships will become the property of the S'aehri faction."
<Tag Sonak/Parsons>
S'aehri awaited a response if they refused she would order the ships to battle stations, and the vessels destroyed.

James quickly changed into a set of all black clothes something he wore rarely, and only when he took his shoreleave was he even out of his uniform. He nearly slept in the thing, and he went to where the letter had gone not knowing exactly who he was meeting.
Then a person walked out of the shadows and looked at him, "James Cohen I presume?"
James nodded bitterly, "Yes what do you want with me and where is Kelsey?"
"I am known as Brandon, and we will get to all of that shortly Jim. Can I call you Jim? If not too bad...You see I work for something called the Cohen Exchange, or a group of pirates. Guess you didn't know who the Cohen's were until you changed your name. See we don't typically force people into this, but you're a special case Jim. Your sister is safe for now, but we need something from you, and if you go to anyone there will be complications in her release. That being if we even release her to you with all her limbs attached."
James looked at him furious, "What...Do you want from me?" He breathed heavily.
Brandon smiled a wicked smile, "We want information on the Federation's ships and the workings in and out. See we could interrogate your sister, but then we would have to capture you. As far as Starfleet is concerned they think that Kelsey went home to deal with family issues. So this is what we are going to do, you will collect information about Federation ships and you will send it to us. If you ever want to see your twin sister alive again then you will comply!"
"Where is she?"
"Jim..Jim don't you worry." He kicked a small datapad towards the man's feet on the screen was Kelsey tied up in a dark appearing room. "The camera feed is live Jim, and if you make one false move...She dies!" He said then with that he vanished into the darkness of the room.
James charged towards him crushing the datapad under his foot, but he had been too late the man vanished. He wasn't certain what he would do. But, he would come up with some sort of plan...He left formulating as he walked away, and back to his quarters...

OOC: After three attempts, among which losing my entire post twice thanks to bloody Open Office Writer, which shut down on me twice.......at long last a decent post.
"Do as you must ambassador, I trust you to do what you would perceive as 'the right thing' as Humans call it." She decided then and there, that she did trust Porett. The Cardassian ambassador had been open and honest with her so far. No, she had no doubt Porett had no hidden agenda.
"You will not touch the ambassador," the Vulcan ordered sharply, causing the security officers to halt dead in their tracks. One stood with his hand out-stretched, now looking somewhat silly. "Stand down," she ordered, "the ambassador may send any message she requires to send. Monitor if you must, but her diplomatic immunity is void only if I, and only I, revoke it. Is that clear?" She watched in satisfaction as the security officers stepped back.
While the Vulcan admiral had argued with security, another commotion occurred. She turned to face the engineering station, from where a high pitch sound was now emitting. "Shut it off!" she ordered, equally sharp, indicating that she was in no mood for further discussion and that she was rapidly reaching the end of her usually very stretching patience. And when she did lose patience, her senior staff knew that they didn't want to be near to witness it.
The engineering officer on the bridge watched his sensor readout as the blast from their ship was fired it went six meters above the Romulan vessel, and grazed the top most point of their shields. "Admiral the phaser fire missed the Romulan ship by six meters. It grazed the top portion of their shields!"
"Contact Commander T'Rehu. We will do everything we can to avoid another such incident."
[engineer]
Then, an urgent message from Mercury came in, a troubled looking first officer appearing on screen. "Admiral, sensors report that the Minerva fired on the Romulan vessel, no damage. Please report on the situation there."
"We are experiencing difficulty with our forward phaser array, it has been sabotaged. Engineering is working to alleviate the problem." she reported to her first officer. "Hold position as we negotiate."
"Admiral, we are being hailed!" Thorad cried from operations, his antennae swaying wildly in alarm.
"On screen!"
A Romulan woman appeared on the screen, "I am Commander S'aehri. I am sorry Starfleet, but I cannot allow these negotiations to continue lower your shields and prepare to be boarded your ships will become the property of the S'aehri faction."
"Mute," the Vulcan admiral ordered coldly, turning from the viewscreen to obscure her face, and thus her words. "We will not surrender to them." She opened shipwide communications, including Mercury and Discordia over a secured channel. "Discordia, engage cloaking device and move position at random. Our technology is advanced sufficiently for them to be unable to track us. Mercury, ready cloak but do not engage. Minerva will do the same. All modules, red alert, man battle stations!" She tapped her combadge. "Doctor Kennedy, prepare sickbay for casualties. I repeat, all hands battle stations, alert condition red!" Alarms started blaring across the ship, the lights dimming slightly while large red indicators began to flash, indicating red alert.
She turned to face the ambassador. "Surrender is not an option ambassador, I will not surrender my crew and my ship to a pirate faction." She knew T'Rehu also had communications with the faction, so she turned back, ordering sound to be restored.
S'aehri awaited a response if they refused she would order the ships to battle stations, and the vessels destroyed.
"We will never surrender," Sonak repeated. "Commander T'Rehu, with our forces combined, we can defeat them." She smiled coldly, as sensors told her Discordia had disappeared, while Mercury drifted from her position, slowly making a turn to face the three attackers. She signaled for the helmsman to match Mercury, and prepare to open fire. "These negotiations cannot be ignored, we cannot endanger those involved any further. We must fight together, to continue."

.:.Starbase 47.:.
Lieutenant Commander Cohen realized his mistake a little to late he stormed towards his quarters sitting down, "Computer research name Cohen." He ordered loudly as he stood back up again and began to pace as the computer worked out the situation. There were two results the Cohen Exchange and the Cohen family name. The exchange result was a splinter group of Cohen's. The group was created by James' uncle who was in fact formerly a part of Starfleet. He had been killed, and now the younger man was being blackmailed for information that was being supplied by the elder Cohen.
The Exchange was desperate, and the Cohen family had disowned those in the Exchange claiming themselves honorable compared to the latter. James was furious, and now they had his sister. He pressed his head against the small viewport that shown space outside the starbase. He wanted to be out looking for his sister. But, there was little he could do at that point stuck there awaiting the return of the Vesuvius that was located in Romulan Space.

She nodded, “Agreed we cannot allow these transgressions to occur.”

“They are powering up phasers Commander!”
S’aehri angrily spun, “I knew they weren’t going to listen, close communications go to battle stations. All ships prepare to fire on the Valdore ship first!” She ordered sitting down.
“Shield’s raised and weapons powered up!”
S’aehri nodded to her tactical officer, “Good prepare to open fire on the Valdore now!”
.:.USS Vesuvius; Main Engineering.:.
Lieutenant Machi awaited this, now they were going to be doing battle he watched on the console as the weapons shown a power up along all phaser banks. “Transfer all non required power to the weapons and shields. All damage control teams man your posts.” He ordered watching as the engineers complied and scrambled to their posts. This was going to be ugly…

Three more warbirds joined the pending battle, though surprisingly they took up wing with the Vesuvius, which was in full combat mode. "We will stand with you Starfleet," their commanders announced passionately, "the treaty must come to pass. Only then can we profit and prosper." It wasn't typical behaviour of a Romulan, but Sonak welcomed their support.
The battle was over well before it could even begin. With the Valdore class ship having gained powerful support, the attackers had no choice but to turn tail and flee. "There will be no battle," Sonak announced to the commanding officers, "lead us to the location of the peace talks, so that we can deliver ambassador Porett to her destination."
On the bridge of the other vessel, the Vulcan admiral saw her brother smile, and she smiled in return. "Well met brother," she called to him.
Richard's smile widened. "I can't wait to meet up with you again, it's been too long." He glanced past her at the Cardassian ambassador. "I'm looking forward to meeting you madam Ambassador." He glanced sideways at T'Rehu. "We both are."

To Parsons' hail, the Admiral responded:
"Everyone hold your positions," Parsons echoed the Admiral's order.
The Admiral then opened communications within the three Federation ships explaining the recent arrival of three warships.
Adam had already put Mercury on red alert and now repeated the order for all hands to man battle stations, though most were already in position. Parsons then ordered Mercury maneuvered into position and put engineering on standby for the cloak. Suddenly three more ships appeared and took up position with the Federation vessels, acknowledging their support of the negotiations. Adam was relieved by the appearance of some new allies. This changed the odds considerably. The renegade ships turned and fled, and the small allied fleet continued on to the peace talks.

The ‘battle’ over almost as quickly as it started, Porett stood almost statue like. She didn’t know what to think and feel, in a way she wasn’t at all surprised by her assistants actions and at the same time deeply disappointed and even sickened by them.
The battle for supremacy had been waged behind closed doors on Cardassia Prime for a long time now, a few in the military wanted to return to the style of government used in the Dominion war, they had grown a liking for the power. And the there were those in Porett’s camp doing everything possible to stop that from ever happening again.
She found it a shame that it was only a few casting such a bad light on what was essentially a reborn Cardassia Prime. Since the forming of the Cardassian civilian led government Porett had been elected by the citizens as an Ambassador every election. A sign she took that her views which she had never been shy in voicing were shared by the majority.
Looking over to Sonak now the comm. channel had closed Porett bowed her head. “Thank you Admiral.. I think it safe now to confide in you the real reason for this trip.”
She gave a rather prideful smile as he continued. “This is no ordinary diplomatic meeting for the Cardassians.. it hasn’t been announced to the public yet but in two weeks I am to be named Minister for Interplanetary Affairs.”
“Our leaders thought if I could announce a renewed treaty on my first day on the job it would go along way to showing both our people and other races we are willing to move forward… unfortunately as you have seen we couldn’t count on my safe travel on one of our own ships sadly.. hence Starfleet was asked for assistance.”
“That and your space acts as a buffer between us and the Romulans.”
Porett then stepped closer but still keeping a metre between them, “I would liked to have told you all sooner, however… my government caught wind of other factions wanting to stop this meeting… some suspected even some Federation officers… Though it would seem it was a Romulan faction all along.”
Looking around the bridge she smiled and then looked back to Sonak. “As my first official act I suppose though.. I withdraw the diplomatic immunity of Legete Alyana… her offence was against your ship and the Federation punish her as your laws see fit.”
Looking to the view screen and her eyes resting on the Romulan ship hovering in space she said mainly to herself. “Duty awaits I will transport over immediately I am sure you would like to get back to a starbase and see to repairs.”
<Tag Sonak>
“It may not mean much but you have a friend in the Cardassian Government… I hope one day I can repay the debt we owe you and your crew.”
With that Porett left the bridge and soon after the ship.

.:.Starbase 47.:.
James had been spending most of his time in his quarters watching reports from his new assignment it seemed that they had made it to Romulus with only one hiccup. The rest of his time was spent trying to learn more about his sister's kidnappers. This was no easy task as he was slow in dredging more information about them. It appeared that these people were Cohen's, but they were not claimed by the rest of his newly known family. They were as much outcasts as his father had been. The only difference is his father had made it this way on his own terms these guys didn't do it that way. The commander was trying to understand the situations that had developed lately. To little or no avail, suddenly he was alerted to an incoming message. He pressed the console and looked at the Lieutenant on the other end, "Hello again Lieutenant Machi."
=^=Commander it is a pleasure to speak with you once more, you are aware that you will not be boarding the ship correct sir?=^=
James smiled, "So then the rumors are indeed true, and I am being reassigned again, but with the same crew?"
=^=Yes Commander they are true, I am your assistant as I have previously explained. All preparations are made, and most of the engineering staff are transferring to the same ship as us. However, there are some that are taking on other assignments as per Starfleet Orders. I heard a rumor that you were going to do some sort of intel mission?=^=
James shook his head, "No Machi that is not accurate, I am your new Chief Engineering Officer, and I cannot wait to meet you guys in person. How are things running over there?"
=^=They are well, we had a small run in with some Romulan ships but they were 'scared' off.=^=
This time Cohen laughed, "Yeah, I read some of the reports, I am still awaiting yours..."
=^=It will be on your desk when I finish it don't worry sir.=^=
Cohen nodded, "Very well, keep her together Lieutenant." He replied and watched as the screen blanked out once more. This time the commander sighed then stood up he would be heading to the crew mess to 'stir' up some trouble...
