After making his announcement to the crew, Mc7 returned to his ready room to contact Elron to set up his de-brief session. While he was doing this, the crew of the Raven began to leave the ship to meet their family and friends that they had not seen since the Raven department the Starbase a month and a half ago. After contacting Elron's office, mc7 got in touch with some of the bases' operations staff to begin preparations for the memorial service, and the subsequent celebration.

~~~~~ On the Raven ~~~~~
Carl wasn't quite sure if Mc's comment about his taking shore-leave, was an 'order' or a 'suggestion' .. He chose to take it as the latter, though he did have a few things he needed to do on the Starbase, his Dress uniform for example, needed a few alterations, and he preferred the tailors on the promenade to do them ..
For now though, he would over-see the almost mass evacuation of the Raven's crew. Who, it seemed, had no trouble interpreting the Admirals order for leave .. They were practically falling over themselves as they waited to get into the walkways, adjoining the Raven to the base itself ..
Not all were happy at their return. Some had lost friends and colleagues on the mission. They would have a memorial service to look forward to .. but they had friends who could help if needed ..
Carl decided to head down to Engineering .. There was work going on down there, upgrades to several systems mainly, he knew Scott would want to stay and oversee the work, but he had to get some time off the ship to be with his family .. As he neared the section, he could hear, before seeing, two of the bases engineers arguing in the corridor ..
"Is there a problem ?" he asked as he neared the pair ..
"Yes Sir ... No Sir ..." the two replied ..
"Well .. Is there or isn't there ?"
"Sir .." the one seemingly doing all the shouting began, "Your 'drun' ... Your Chief Engineer is refusing us access to the main warp drive controls .. He's told us in no uncertain terms to .. Leave !"
"Were you about to say 'Drunk' Lieutenant ?" Carl asked quietly.
"He may have had a erm .. Drink .. Or two Sir." the other offered in way of confirmation.
Without another word, Torek entered Engineering .. He was greeted by broken glass which crunched under his feet. As he looked round, he heard a shout from McLean's office ..
"Get the HELL out of my department !" ...
Carl moved to the door of the office and looked in .. Scott was leaning with his face on the desk, a half empty whiskey bottle in one hand .. His other hand seemed to be touching the view-screen on his desk, and he was muttering silently to himself ..
Carl stepped further into the room, allowing the door to close behind him ...
"Computer .. Seal this door." he ordered.
"Acknowledged." replied the ship.
"Scott ..." Carl said, then after getting no reply, "Scott .. It's Carl .. Whats going on ?" ..........
Marko was standing on the Bridge when Captain Mc was announcing the crew’s shoreleave over the COMM. “All crew are now officially on leave, and I mean ALL crew.” Officially on leave Marko thought to himself, well unofficially I’m staying on the Raven. In the short time he had been aboard the Raven he had learnt to call it home so it felt more natural to stay. Plus his family were all back on earth, thinking about his family made him return to his quarters and try and finish up his letter to them. After taking the busy turbo-lift to his quarters Marko sat down in his chair and grabbed the PADD that had his letter to his family on it… To: James Ramius, Kathy Ramius Subject: My first mission on the Raven
Hey Mum & Dad,
I know you guys did not want me to join Starfleet but as I have been doing since I joined I have another update for you. Well I finally got my first real posting since joining the Academy aboard the USS Raven. Its an Intrepid class ship, here is a picture of the ship docked in Bellicose:
I even got my own Department I am the Chief Operations Officer aboard which gives me responsibility for the ship’s resources. I am thoroughly enjoying my time aboard and have made many friends amongst the ship’s crew. Like our very decisive Captain – Admiral Mc, Carl Torek our talented Executive Officer and even our eccentric Chief Engineer Scott McLean. The Raven has become my home over the time I’ve been onboard but I would still like to come back to earth if you guys will have me.
I am currently on shore leave on Starbase Bellicose in the Majoris system – If you want to come and visit me I am stationed on Bellicose between missions. You are always more than welcome to come and visit, hope the family is getting on well. How are my younger brothers and sister?
I hope everything is going well at home and I hope to see you guys soon. I know you did not agree with my decision to be in the fleet but I hope you will support me and it would be nice to know that you are okay.
Your loving son, Marko Leaning back in his chair. He sat the PADD down and said: “Computer send this message to James & Kathy Ramius” “Message sent.” Responded the Computer Marko rubbed his temple and then decided to go to sleep, to catch up on all the sleep he had missed recently. "Computer dim the lights", "Set a wake-up timer for 0800 hours" "Lights dimmed and wake-up timer set" Responded the Computer as Marko fell off to sleep...
~~~~~ On the Raven ~~~~~
Carl patiently waited for the Chief Engineer to give him some sort of explanation. Anything that would put some light on McLean's actions lately. But he simply sat there saying nothing .. Then his Comms beeped ..
=^= Commander Flinn to Commander Torek =^=
=^= I'm a little busy Commander .. Can this wait ? =^= Carl asked, watching the immobile Scott closely.
=^= Well .. I've just been informed that my staff can't get into Engineering .. There's no wa ....... =^=
=^= They have full access now Commander .. There was a .. misunderstanding =^= Torek interrupted.
=^= Yes .. I heard all about it .. Thank you Commander .. Flinn out =^=
The Comms closed and Carl asked Scott what the problem was once again, this time leaning forward on the desk .. He wasn't trying to get a look at the screen McLean was touching, but whatever was on it had caused all this ...
Torek came to a decision ..
"Commander McLean .. I want you to go to your quarters ..." and as McLean sat motionless, "Right NOW !" he said.
"Scott .. Don't make me have you escorted." Carl continued sympathetically.
After a moment, Scott got up from his chair .. He pointedly closed the screen before him, and checking the level of fluid in the bottle he was holding, glared at Carl before moving toward the door ...
"Computer." Carl said, never breaking eye contact with the Engineer, "Release door .. Leave the bottle Scott." he finished.
The bottle hit the desk as Scott dropped it. He gave Torek another look of distaste, then left his office .. Carl tapped his Comms badge ...
=^= Torek to Security .. Ensure Commander McLean reaches his quarters .. Keep a discreet distance .. Just ensure he gets there =^=
=^= Aye Sir =^= replied one of Reman's duty staff.
"Computer .. Disable all replicator access to commander McLean."
"Confirmed." replied the ship, casually .. Carl looked down at the now blank screen on Scott's desk .. Wondering what the hell could be going on with him ..........

~~~~~~~~~~~ Aboard the Raven: Marko’s quarters ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marko had a rather sleepless night, he knew it would not be long before his wake-up timer went off.
“beep-beeep-beeeep-Beeeep-Beeeeep!” The alarm was getting louder with each passing second.
“Wake-up timer off!” Marko grumbled
Rising from his bed, his eyes almost still closed he asked the computer the time, knowing it was 0800 hours – he dragged himself out of bed, his ribs were healing – although they were slightly painful and his side was still bruised.
“Computer lights, dimmed to 40%” He bellowed as he headed for the sonic shower. He was officially on leave, but Marko had nothing to do with himself. So he had grabbed one of his spare duty uniforms and intended on overseeing repairs to the Raven. He thought that he may even explore the Starbase, after the memorial service for the fallen crewmen and women who were lost on the mission.
Having gotten into uniform, Marko decided he would head to the office he had been working from on Deck 1. He would have to go past the Bridge and would probably pop his head in to see if any of the crew were still around.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Haven taken the turbo lift from his quarters to the Bridge, the doors swished open to show a few starbase officers checking ship systems. One or two of the officers gazed over at him but continued with what they were doing. Marko noticed one officer in particular, a female officer standing over his beloved Ops console.
“Excuse me” As the female officer turned he realised she was a Commander. “ Ma’am, I am Lieutenant Marko Ramius – the Raven’s COO. I am planning on staying aboard if there is any way I can assist you and your teams just let me know.”
“Thank you Lieutenant, I am Commander Flinn. I’ll let you know if we require your assistance.” She replied
“I don’t mean to slow you down but could you send me a PADD with the progress of repairs. I’m just curious to see how things are going.” Inquired Marko
“Yes of course, Pass the Lieutenant the updated repair reports and estimated completion time.” Flinn instructed one of her team members. The junior officer handed Marko the PADD.
“Thank you Commander” Marko smiled.
“You Raven crew really don’t want to leave your ship do you, I spoke to your XO earlier and hes just the same.” She chuckled and then turned back to her work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marko headed to the turbo-lift after collecting some old PADDs and performance evaluations of his department personnel. Marko was pleased to here that he was not the only senior officer that had not left the Raven. Once in the turbo-lift Marko headed to Deck 2 and to the Messhall.
He then tapped his COMM badge: =^= Ramius to Torek =^=
=^= Torek here. =^=
=^= If you have some free time, I’ll be in the messhall throughout the morning. Its nothing important just thought you might want to grab some breakfast?” Marko asked Carl
McLean awoke with a grumble. His head pounded for no apparent reason and the smell of vomit was everywhere. The lights were out in his quarters leaving McLean wondering what was going on.
Rolling onto his side, McLean found himself face to face with a pile of dried vomit on the floor next to an empty bottle of scotch. While staring into that empty, vomit covered bottle a flood of memories and emotions engulfed the Chief Engineer.
“Oh my God, Stephanie, Andy.” McLean mumbled out in between his weeping.
Just above him the transmission that had caused his drunken binge was still beaming light into the dark room. The letter had informed McLean that his wife and eldest son had tragically died in a shuttle crash. His youngest child, Vanessa was at home when the accent happened. McLean didn’t remember much of anything after that.
Stumbling over to his kitchen table, McLean picked up a single hypospray. He had taken it and several containers of pain relief medication so that way he didn’t have to head into see the Doctor ever time he had a hangover.
As suddenly as the medication was sprayed into his body he felt a great sense of relief. His throbbing head calmed down, yet the tears continued to fall. He then remembered faded and distant conversation with Commander Torek, and a scuffle in Engineering.
Walking slowly McLean pulled off his duty jacket and undershirt. He knew he needed a shower and fast. He just hoped that the warmth of the shower would be able to wash away the pain he was feeling in his heart and the shame he was feeling for his actions in front of a Commanding Officer.
Carl had gone back to his quarters after talking to Scott. He was worried about the Chief Engineers state of mind .. But in this instance, decided to give him time .. Something devastating had obviously happened, and Scott couldn't bring himself to open up about it. He'd seemed a solitary type of person from what Carl remembered of his file, so maybe he needed time .. Besides, they were in space-dock, so there wasn't much that McLean could do other than try to sort out his problem. 'Hopefully without the aid of several bottles' Torek thought ...
He decided, for the moment at least, to keep the meeting with Scott to himself. If it escalated into a public show of his drinking, there world be no choice but to get the Admiral involved, and that could mean an end to McLean's career .. With the memorial service coming up, the last thing the Raven needed was a court-martial .. !
He took a shower and dressed in something other than his uniform. Checking there was nothing requiring him immediate attention, he headed for the nearest walkway, and Star-base Bellicose ...
Smoothing down his dress tunic, as he often did when trying to delay tackling a situation he wasn't looking forward to, mc7 stood just out of range of the sensor which would open the door to the room on the Starbase where the memorial and promotion ceremony was about to start. The ceremony was going to be a bitter sweet event, recognising both the loss of part of the family that was the crew of the Raven as well as the advancement of other members through the ranks. Taking a deep breath, he readied himself and walked forward, with the doors parting as he approached. Crossing through the doors into the wide open room, the Admiral instantly seen that almost every single member of the Raven crew was in there. That meant something to him. It showed that they were a family, through the good times and the bad, and that they would support each other when grieving, and celebrating.
Walking to the podium which had been set up at the front of the room on a stage for the event, mc7 looked around the room, making eye contact with as many of the crew as he could. They had to see that he was suffering the pain of loss just as much as each and every one of them, and that he would be there for each and every one of them to help them through it. When he reached the stage, he took his place behind the podium, took another deep breath, and began to speak.
My fellow officers. Today is a day of deep sadness for us, as we come together to mourn the loss of people that we cared about. To some, these people were lovers, to others colleagues and to yet more they were people who we would have trusted our lives with. But one thing is true. Each of the four people we are here to remember today were our friends. We all hold a special place in our hearts for them. They may no longer be with us, but that place in our hearts will be there until the end of time. We may not see them each day any longer, but we will never forget them. There is no more fitting a tribute to these fine officers than for each and every one of us to do what these fine officers gave their lives for. To seek out new life, and to go where no one has gone before.
To Lt Andy Smith, Ensign Melissa De Soto, Cmdr Hillary Blair and Lt Xeres'thyser, we honour your memory, and will never forget you.
We must also remember that during our mission, it was not only our own that we lost, but two Romulan officers lost their lives. Centurion Tovan and Lt Jaren, we honour your memory as we honour that of our own fallen comrades. May your souls rest in eternal peace.
I would like to ask that we have a moments silence to honour each of these fine officers. This should not be a sad time, even though each of us feels sad. We should celebrate their lives, share old stories about how we each met them, or how they were notorious for telling bad jokes. Please now take a moment to think of the good times we all had together.
And with that, the room fell silent. Even though there was an air of sadness within the room when mc7 had entered, he now felt as if it had slowly began to lift. After a moment, mc7 broke the silence by clapping his hands. Slowly, around the room, members of the crew began to clap as well, giving their fallen comrades one last thank you.
Once the clapping finally stopped, the Admiral invited everyone to share their stories, and give the four officers a wake they would have been proud of.
OOC: Sorry for the delay in getting this up everyone. Exams have been keeping me all to busy recently, and then starting to move as well hasn't helped. This is the first bit of the ceremony, with the promotions part to follow!
Marko finished off his breakfast in the Mess Hall and decided to go onto the Star Base the memorial service was not for a couple more hours so Marko would have some time to look around. Walking along the Star Base’s promenade Marko saw various shops mainly artefact shops and some bars and restaurants. Marko was not an avid shopper of anything and least of all artefacts, at one point in his childhood he had wanted to emulate the great Indiana Jones (a 20th century character who was an archaeologist). However, then Marko began to feel everyone had already been discovered and being an archaeologist was not as glamorous as he dreamt.
Marko kept walking around the Star Base, it was huge. He walked around for a while just wandering aimlessly and before he knew it, it was time for the Memorial Service. Sprinting to find his way to the service he sat down at the front of the block of seats, the room was filling up quickly. Admiral Mc7_of_9 was standing at the podium, the service was about to begin…
“My fellow officers. Today is a day of deep sadness for us, as we come together to mourn the loss of people that we cared about. To some, these people were lovers, to others colleagues and to yet more they were people who we would have trusted our lives with. But one thing is true. To Lt Andy Smith, Ensign Melissa De Soto, Cmdr Hillary Blair and Lt Xeres'thyser, we honour your memory, and will never forget you.”
As Mc finished saying this, Marko thought deeply about what the officers had given their life for, Marko did not know the officers by name or to look at but he was deeply saddened by their deaths. All because of a saboteur and the actions of the dishonest Romulans, it still angered Marko deeply, but this was not about the Romulans it was about celebrating the lifes of the fine Starfleet officers.
“My fellow officers. Today is a day of deep sadness for us, as we come together to mourn the loss of fine officers. This should not be a sad time, even though each of us feels sad. We should celebrate their lives, share old stories about how we each met them, or how they were notorious for telling bad jokes. Please now take a moment to think of the good times we all had together.”
Members of the crew were sitting silent with tears running down their faces during the minutes silence, with male and female officers alike holding their heads in their hands. Mc then started clapping in remembrance of the officers and the room erupted in clapping to celebrate their lifes, then Mc invited everyone to tell their stories of the officers and remember their contributions and lifes. At first no-one moved but then people began to talk to one another and regale tales of the officers’ achievements and experiences together aboard the Raven. Marko smiled soberly at the unity of the Raven’s crew it was just like a family.
E'Liana pulled on her dress uniform and looked in the mirror. She hated funerals. Not, she mused, that people should really like them, but even so. Glancing at her hair and sighing at its failure to stay in the bun that she had decided was professional and sombre enough for the occasion, E'Liana grabbed the bits that were flailing about and shoved them roughly behind her ears.
Smoothing her uniform once again she glared at Lursa, her cat, who was winding her way around her owners legs in a desperate plea for attention. “Not now, Lursa, go and sleep or something…” she muttered. The cat seemed to take offence at E’Liana’s tone and stalked away from the woman who was now unworthy of her affection. E’Liana grimaced at the lingering cat hairs on her uniform and brushed them off.
Glancing at the chronometer, she realised that it was time to go and so the young klingon woman picked up her pace. She patted Lursa on the head – and noted that she did not receive a head-but in return…apparently cats held grudges – and walked to her door, pinning her comm.-badge on as she went.
As she passed her table she saw the picture of herself, Zoarial and her young cousin Grilka clutching a reluctant Lursa and smiled to herself. It was silly, really, missing him…they had only known each other for a year or so, and yet she felt it more than she felt the absence of her family.
Shaking her head free from such thoughts, E’Liana made her way to the funeral alone.
~*~ E’Liana stood with Joy, her nurse from Sickbay and heard her sniffling slightly…Joy had known Andy Smith for a while, whereas these were all passing acquaintances to E’Liana. She listened to the Admiral’s words and thought that they were a touching tribute:
“…There is no more fitting a tribute to these fine officers than for each and every one of us to do what these fine officers gave their lives for. To seek out new life, and to go where no one has gone before…”
E’Liana could see Joy shaking slightly and didn’t know what to do…her mother was always better at this sort of thing than her and she doubted that a spirited slap on the back would do much good right now…
“…We should celebrate their lives, share old stories about how we each met them, or how they were notorious for telling bad jokes. Please now take a moment to think of the good times we all had together.”
The Admiral finished speaking, and in spite of herself, E’Liana could feel the sentimental human tears welling up inside her, but was saved the embarrassment of being seen to cry when Joy threw herself upon her workmate. Shocked from her gloom and into the role of counsellor, she patted Joy on the back in what she hoped was a reassuring manner.
After a few moments she realised that Joy was speaking but didn’t have a clue what she was saying. Continuing to pat the older woman on the back, E’Liana waited to see what would happen…she had only been to one funeral in her life and that was a Klingon funeral when she was five.
Patting the now rather hysterical Joy on the back once again, E’Liana looked around hopelessly at the other…guests? Waiting for someone to show her what to do. She had the feeling that there wouldn’t be any howling for the spirit here…
Carl had taken as much time as he dared in getting to the ceremony. He didn't like wakes, he wasn't fond of goodbyes ... But alas, Casualties, even fatalities occurred and appropriate respect had to be shown ..
The room wasn't large by anyones standards, but it was big enough to make the ceremony intimate, with everyone being close to their friends and colleagues .. Carl walked through, heading toward the front where Mc stood, seemingly looking over his notes.
One or two of the crew acknowledged his arrival with respectful nods, which he returned. Then the Admiral began speaking .. He had decided to keep the eulogy short.. In turn, he named the crew they had lost, then took a few seconds to let people take in what he was saying. The thing that both surprised, and annoyed Torek, was the fact Mc7 even asked for the Romulans who had died to be remembered .. It was the right thing to do and Carl knew it, but it just didn't seem fair that the people who were responsible for the Raven's losses, be spoken about in the same instance ...
As Mc finished, Carl could see that the crew were taking their time getting up from their seats, before moving into the adjoining room, where refreshments and food had been laid on .. He saw E'liana, she looked out of her depth, for her something unusual in itself. She was trying to comfort one of her nurses, Joy he thought, it had been rumored that she and a Lieutenant killed on the mission were seeing each other ..
Walking over, Carl stood in silence as the young nurse cried, sobbing uncontrollably against the Doctors shoulder ..
"Ladies ..." Carl began quietly, and as the nurse, along with E'liana looked, up he continued, "I'm sorry for your .. Did Lieutenant Smith have family .. I didn't see anyone else here ?"
"No Sir .. There was no-one else .. We .. I ....." Joy began, but simply went silent, as if remembering him in her own way.
E'liana nodded toward the doorway leading to the adjacent room. Thinking if they could get her in there, she may begin to feel a little better, knowing she had friends around her ..
"Let's go and get a drink." Torek said, "We can raise a toast to Andrew .. Along with the others."
Joy nodded, appreciating the small, almost insignificant fact that the Commander even remembered his name, and quietly got up from her seat, E'liana following suit. The three walked into the next room, where thankfully, Carl could see people chatting, one or two seriously, but some smiled respectfully, seeming to be recounting an amusing memory of someone now lost to the Raven ...
"Thank you .. Thank you both." Joy began, wiping tears from her face, "I'm sorry I made such a scene in ther ......"
"Nonsense." the Doctor said quickly, trying to prevent Joy from beginning another bout of tears, "We have all lost friends .. Family .. Loved ones .. It is right and proper that you grieve it is the best way to remember."
Nodding, Joy managed a small smile, Carl was more than relieved, he had never been good with the whole 'mourning' thing ..
"Let me get you two a drink OK ?" he said, and both ladies nodded in appreciation ..........
Admiral Mc7_of_9 finished his tribute to the fallen crew members and Marko could not help but think about being elsewhere. He was not a fan of people’s collective grief, but then who was he thought to himself. Marko was sitting with his fellow Ops officers, none of the casualties were from Ops and as Marko was new to the crew so he had not met any of the lost officers. Marko was comforting Ensign Lowz, she was distressed by the deaths of their fellow crewmembers and only had the chance to grief now.
Marko tried to comfort her. “Kate lets go to the next room and join the rest of the crew, I’ll get us both a drink.”
“Okay, lead the way.” Replied a teary eyed, Lowz.
Marko led Kate to the next room. Where they both got a drink and had a seat at one of the many tables. Lowz just ordered a water, but Marko wanted something stronger so got a scotch on the rocks. He noticed Carl at the bar and gave him a respectful nod as he carried the drinks over to Kate.
“So, how are the family?” Marko asked hoping to take Lowz mind off of the thought of death.
“They’re great. Thanks. Robert and the kids are exploring the Starbase just now. I didn’t want to bring them along with me.” Lowz answered.
“You’ll have to introduce me to them.” Marko beamed. “I sent a letter home to my parents yesterday, I was hoping they might use the opportunity to come and visit me. They never really agreed with my decision to join Starfleet though, I don’t hear much from them.”
“I’m sorry to hear that Marko. I’m sure Robert, wouldn’t mind you coming to dinner with us on the Starbase.” Lowz answered
“So, have you and Robert ever considered moving from the Starbase to the Raven?” Asked Marko
“We have, but the education provided onboard Bellicose is excellent and Robert’s job means he has to remain aboard the Starbase so it will never really work. I have been considering transferring to Bellicose so we can be together as a family.” Lowz repied
Marko and Lowz continued to chat at their table, Marko could see Carl talking to E’Laina and another women. As well as various other crewmembers remembering their fallen comrades in silence, with laughter or with tears Marko realised the loss the Raven had suffered. Marko realised that the crew was one big family who worked and cared for one another, Marko finally felt like he belonged.
E'Liana looked up in relief at the voice of Torek and was glad for the offer of a drink. He wandered off to get the drinks and E’Liana hoped that these drinks would be strong; although she doubted it…this was a Federation vessel, after all.
Joy seemed to be calming down now, the offered synthahol apparently calming her nerves before she had even had any. She looked up at the doctor and smiled weakly. “Sorry about that…it’s just…” She broke into a strangled sob and closed her eyes again.
E’Liana smiled at her friend. “It’s ok; don’t worry about it…that’s why I’m here.” She patted Joy awkwardly on the shoulder.
Joy smiled and got a handkerchief out of her pocket and sat dabbing her eyes. E’Liana’s smile was fixed on her face, and as Joy dabbed at her eyes, E’Liana’s eyes wandered over her friends shoulder to watch the progress of Torek, who was now making his way back, three drinks held precariously in his hands as he wended his way through the crowd.
She smiled her thanks as he placed a glass in front of her and they watched as Joy took a rather large gulp of her own. E’Liana felt compelled to remind her friend that this wasn’t actually alcoholic, but decided against it.
She heard Torek engaging Joy in conversation but felt out of her depth, so was content to sit and sip her drink. She noticed that Joy seemed to be feeling better – she had smiled at something Torek said – and E’Liana was glad, but now wondering what she could do.
She noticed that the drinks were getting dangerously low, so she excused herself to get more.
"Captain James, please be advice that you will be dealing with a Starfleet Admiral."
"I know, sir, I don't need to be reminded," David replied angrily. He didn't like be treated like a child. He had been dealing with these types of mission since he was a teenager.
"Don't get smart with me James, I can and will send you back!"
"Understood," David replied with a calming manner," I'll contact you at the next scheduled meeting."
"Understood, Admiral.....d......out."
He had been sent here by his superiors and he would do it to the best of his ability. He had heard of Vice Admiral MC 7 of 9 from his counterparts, but he would withhold judgment. Intelligence had asked them to investigate the incident that cost the lives of to many Starfleet personal. He expected resistance from the crew, but he would do his job.
"Ensign inform Admiral MC 7 of 9, that I have arrived," David said to an ensign on the bridge," he'll receive my transfer orders momentarily."
"Yes....yes, Captain," the ensign replied tentatively.
McLean had managed to crawl himself out of his bottle and into his duty uniform. He had no real desire to work but found that only the routine of heading off to Main Engineering was keeping him from drowning his sorrows once again.
He had on many occasions since learning of the death of his wife and son wondered about the ‘what ifs’. What if he had signed the divorce papers, would Stephanie and Andy still be alive? It was these thoughts that haunted the Engineer and drove him back inside a bottle.
Not today, McLean promised himself. He thought to try positive affirmations as a way to change his outlook on the day. In the end though he knew that chances were that he would be a fall down drunk by the end of the day. A realization that not only frightened him but provided him with comfort.
“Chief?” Lt. Benson said, as he was surprised to see McLean walking into Main Engineering. The last time Benson spoke with McLean, he thought McLean was going to submit his papers for immediate resignation from Starfleet “Are you feeling all right?”
“I’m feeling fine,” McLean tried his best to hide his true feelings, “How has things been down here?”
“Um…well.” Benson replied.
McLean could see the curiosity in Benson’s eyes, as well as the eyes of his fellow engineers. He knew better than to underestimate the close nature of engineers as well as the rapid rate in which news always spread through out its small community.
“I’m fine Chet.” McLean said once again, this time showing more confidence.
“Glad to hear it sir.” Benson replied with a courteous smile.
“May I look at the morning my reports?” McLean asked as he held out his hand.
Benson looked confused as he looked around. McLean could see that Benson was holding something back but wasn’t about to say it out in the open.
“Well?” McLean insisted.
“I think it would be best if you came with me.” Benson said pulling McLean aside.
The two walked into McLean small officer in Engineering. Upon entering it McLean immediately noticed all his clutter had been cleaned up. Nothing was ‘in order’; it was all too organized for his brain. It looked more like an office that Benson would occupy.
“What happened to my office?” McLean said in a stern tone of voice.
“Please,” Benson said with a simple gesture for McLean to enter the office space.
Seeing that Benson wasn’t about to back down, McLean stepped into the office and took his normal seat at his desk. Benson stood standing between McLean and the doorway. He stood there for a matter of moments before he spoke up. He didn’t quite know how he was going to break this news to the Chief Engineer.
“What’s going on Chet?” McLean asked in a more subdued tone.
“There’s no real easy way to say it,” Benson started to say.
“Then say it.” McLean interrupted.
“Commander Torek has relieved you of duty.” Benson finished.
“What!?” McLean said nearly jumping out of his chair.
“It was because of your outburst a few days ago.”
“What outburst?” McLean said still in an aggressive tone.
“Please, calm down.”
“I’m calm.” McLean said, still in an agitated tone.
Benson feel silent from guilt. He had hoped that McLean hadn’t noticed the new pip on his collar and finally that moment had come. In McLean’s down time he had been promoted to a full Lieutenant and selected as Chief Engineer. McLean’s eyes widened up as he noticed Benson’s new gold pip. He knew that it could only mean one thing.
“I’m not the Chief Engineer anymore am I?” McLean asked.
“No,” Benson replied, “I am.”
McLean sat back down. His mind was racing and the only thing he seemed to be able to focus on was the last bottle of scotch he had in his quarters. Benson knelt down to eye level with McLean. He could see anger and frustration with in the former Chief Engineers eyes.
“There’s more,” Benson said but paused to wait for McLean’s full attention, “You’ve been demoted to the rank of Lieutenant.”
McLean looked as if he hadn’t heard any of the news. His gaze was distant; he was mentally off somewhere else. Benson hoped he could share some good news with him but he hadn’t any to give. He prayed the only shred of other news he had would some how bring him back around.
“I have selected you as my Assistant Chief Engineer.” Benson said, “Your knowledge and experience just can’t be ignored.”
“To hell with this.” McLean said.
“What?” Benson said trying to figure out what he meant.
“TO-HELL-WITH-THIS.” McLean said as he pulled his pips off his collar and slammed them onto the desk and walked out.
more to come...
Carl had been chatting to E'liana and her nurse when his Comms badge beeped. Excusing himself, he moved to one side then tapped the badge ..
=^= Torek =^=
=^= Commander .. Ensign Franks on the Bridge .. I have a Captain David James here .. He wants to see the Admiral .. Due to the ceremony going on I thought it best to contact you first =^=
Torek didn't know the name, but he couldn't be expected to know every Command-ranked Officer ..
=^= Explain where we are and ask him to come here please .. I'll inform the Admiral myself =^=
=^= Aye Sir .. Raven out =^=
"Sir." said Ensign Franks, "The Admiral and most of the crew are at the memorial ceremony .. Recreation room seven on Bellicose .. Could you meet him there ?"
James dropped the large bag he was carrying then headed for the turbo-lift ..
"Have that placed in my quarters .. I'll be on the Star base." the Captain said, as the doors closed ... Franks checked what was available on deck two, assigning the quarters .. He then asked a crewman to take the bag there .. It seemed Captain James was going to be staying on board ..
Carl attracted the Admirals' attention ..
"Sir .. There's a Captain James on the Raven .. He's asked to speak to you personally .. I've asked him to come here."
"Never heard of him." Mc said, but Carl thought he saw the tinyest flicker of recognition as the name was spoken, though maybe he was wrong, "Grab a drink .. Theres the other aspect to this gathering we need to get through yet too .. We'll wait until the Captain arrives I think." said Mc.
Carl took a class from one of the stewards' trays, then made small talk for a few moments waiting for Captain James to arrive ..........
Marko had finished talking to Lowz and felt like returning to his quarters aboard the Raven. He was not one for wakes, no one was but Marko had felt he had spoken to everyone he needed to and could head back to the ship. Marko paused for a moment he had not noticed Scott at the wake, he was puzzled to the Chief Engineer’s whereabouts.
Leaving the table and wishing Lowz, good bye. “Kate, I’m off back to the Raven. I hope you and the kids enjoy the rest of your shore leave.” Marko smiled as he left the table. Lowz smiled back and stood up and went over to a group of the crew by the bar.
As Marko was heading for the door, he noticed Carl and Mc discussing something. It looked important, Marko did not want to intrude but he wanted to speak to Carl before he returned to the Raven. Walking over, Carl and Mc paused their discussion as Marko approached. Marko apologised for interrupting,
“Excuse me Sirs, but I have quite an important observation. Where is Commander McLean, he is the only member of the senior crew not here, is something going on that I should know about?”
~I'll have to talk to the Commander about proper protocol~ David noted as he walked onto Bellicose. He didn't appreciate being told what to do, especially from a mere Commander. For now he would keep quiet, he knew that the Raven crew would not be pleased if he berated their first officer.
“Excuse me Sirs, but I have quite an important observation. Where is Commander McLean, he is the only member of the senior crew not here, is something going on that I should know about?”
"Commander McLean is no longer a member of the senior staff," David answered for the Admiral," Admiral, I have been transferred to the Raven for an undisclosed amount of time. The orders are waiting on your desk."
As Marko asked the Captain and XO about Scott, a man in a Captain’s uniform also approached and to Marko’s astonishment answered his question. Before Marko even had the chance to respond the Captain had already began his next sentence.
"Commander McLean is no longer a member of the senior staff," David answered for the Admiral," Admiral, I have been transferred to the Raven for an undisclosed amount of time. The orders are waiting on your desk."
Who the hell does he think he is, Marko thought to himself. Without thinking he snapped back as soon as the mysterious Captain had finished talking.
“With respect sir, I believe I asked the Raven’s Captain, Admiral 7of9 and not you Captain!” Marko responded deliberately stating his superior’s rank in comparison to Admiral Mc.
“Admiral, is what this Captain says true? Why is Scott no longer a member of the senior staff, what’s that supposed to mean anyways?” Marko asked in a raised voice, he was clearly becoming angry and some of the crew were beginning to stare.
Marko was beginning to let his emotions get the better of him, although himself and Scott often had a frosty relationship he had a great deal of respect for the Chief Engineer. Marko stared at Carl and Mc, avoiding eye contact with the newcomer who had seemingly assigned himself to the crew. At least thats how it seemed to Marko... he just stared at them both in disbelief as he waited for any response.
OOC: Whats happening to Scott and who is our mysterious guest, come on folks lets get back into posting before our new mission! off: your guess is as good as mine.Benson watched as the former Chief Engineer stormed out of Main Engineering. He wanted to say something to sooth his anger but there wasn’t much he could say in this position. The call had come from the top and with everything that just happened a simple ‘I’m sorry’ didn’t seem to be the right thing to say. McLean had made the long walk back to his quarters. Upon entering he ordered the computer to set the door settings to private; the last thing he wanted was a visitor. Sitting down on his couch he only had to look across the room where he spotted his freedom. Sitting on his make shift bar was his very last bottle of scotch, the very last alcoholic beverage that he knew about onboard the ship. He deliberated several times on opening the bottle and consuming it in one sitting. He felt that would ease his pain, or somehow make Stephanie and Andy come back to life. He knew though that it was just an emotional escape, one that carried several consequences. “To hell with it.” McLean said, pushing himself up off the couch. He walked briskly to the bottle and just as he reached the bottle a single beep rang out in the room. McLean turned slowly to the cracked view screen. There on the screen were two words, Incoming Transmission. Seconds later those words were replaced by the transmissions origin, and to his shock and delight it was coming from home. He walked slowly to the view screen and pushed the access command and stood back to watch the incoming transmission. He feared it was a delayed transmission from Stephanie, but once the screen blinked he found himself face to face with his mother-in-law. Scott, by now you have been notified about Stephanie and Andy. The family has been in a state of deep morning since the accident and we want you to come home. Vanessa needs her father; a father that isn’t in Starfleet. Your career had constantly been a rift in your marriage and I feel that if you don’t come home now it will cause a rift in our family.McLean looked down at his feet and saw the PADD with his resignation letter on it. He bent down and picked up the PADD, looking over his words. The more he read the words he spoke that night the more he felt that leaving Starfleet again was the right thing to do. In the background McLean’s mother-in-law continued to talk but it wasn’t until he heard his lovely daughters voice that he looked away from the PADD. Daddy, please come home…I miss you so very much.”I Miss you too baby.” McLean said as if she could hear. McLean’s mother-in-law once again took a seat in front of the screen and informed him of Stephanie and Andy’s memorial. She then explained that she had pulled some strings with in Starfleet to get him a transport back to Earth. She noted that it wasn’t hard in situations like these and that the transport was leaving tomorrow. After the good-byes the viewing screen turned back to black and McLean was left standing alone in his quarters with the data PADD in his hand. He looked down at the PADD and eyed a single, highlighted word at the end of the document. It simply read, ‘ SEND’.
Raven had just approached Mc7 and Carl and asked about Scott, as he wasn't at the ceremony. They had no answers they could give them, but before they were able to convey that, the question was answered for there. Looking up to see who had presumed to answer for him, mc7 seen a fairly non descript man in a command uniform. Glancing at his collar, he seen that the man carried the rank of Captain. Marko obviously didn't like the stranger answering a question clearly not directed to him,l and he made that clear when he spoke.
With respect sir, I believe I asked the Raven’s Captain, Admiral 7of9 and not you Captain!
Before the situation developed any further into a scene, which to an extent had already happened, Mc7 stepped in.
Marko, please remember correct protocol when speaking to a senior officer. And Captain, I would hope that I don't need to remind you of the same. When a member of my crew asks me a question then it is me they ask it to. Please remember that. I have a promotion ceremony to conduct. You and I will meet in my ready room aboard the Raven in 3 hours, where you can explain your purpose here.
With that the Admiral turned his back and made his way to the stage so the events could continue. When he reached the stage he took his position behind the podium once more, and waited a moment for the crowd to settle before beginning the next part of the evening.
When he reached the stage he took his customary place behind the podium and begin to speak.
We began the night by remembering our fallen comrades, but we were not sad. We remember the good times we all shared together, we remember the laughs, but most of all we celebrate their lives. Now it is time for us to have a celebration of a different nature. It is time for us torecognizee those among us who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in recent times. On that note I would like to invite Acting Ensign Marko Ramius to join me on stage please.
Marko made his way through the crowd and climbed the two steps to reach the stage and stand beside the Admiral.
Marko joined us aboard the Raven straight out of the Academy, and since his very first momentaboardd he has gone out of his way to integrate himself into the crew. He joined the crew at a time where things were in the air, what with us just having lost one of the Senior officers to reassignment, and our embarking on last mission. In line with hisexemplaryy performance since joining the Raven, I have beenauthorizedd by Starfleet Command to promote Marko to the rank of Lt Cmdr, with all of theprivilegess andresponsibilitiess accompanying. Congratulations, Lt Cmdr.
And with that, mc7 walked over to Makro and handed him a small black box, which when opened revealed the pips that Marko could now wear on his collar to show his rank. Mc7 shook his hand and smiled.
The next promotion is one in which I takeparticularr delight in issuing. When our former first officer Steven Smith was called upon to take command of therecommissionedn Olympia, his job fell to a man whose dedication to duty, and more importantly to his crew, was unsurpassed by anyone I have ever know in the service. On that note, I would like to ask Acting First Officer Carl Torek to please join me.
Carl, who was standingto-wardss the front of the group made the short journey to stand next to Marko, who was still on stage next to the Admiral. Turning to face Carl, mc7 spoke again,
Carl, since you came aboard the Raven, way back when you were in Mr Ramius' position, you have a hugeassett to the Raven, but more so to me. I have absolute faith in your abilities as a Command officer, but also as a friend. Your command style is one which makes you approachable by anyone, be they an Acting Ensign who has just joined the ship through to anexperiencee Commander. That is not something that can be taught, and is a skill which a lot of Command officers lack. You have it in abundance. As such, I am pleased to say that you have passed your trial time as XO with flying colours, and I am hereby confirming your position as First Officer of the USS Raven withimmediatee effect.
Carl walked over to the podium and shook the Admiral's hand. While he was doing that, a huge swell of pride built up within mc7. He had seen Carl develop from a new member of the crew right through to the man standing before him, and he couldn't help be proud of what he had become. Mc7 was sure though that Carl had a lot further to go in his career, both within Section 47 and Starfleet as a whole, and he would do everything he could to help that happen.
Turning back to the assembled crew, the Admiral lifted aglasss of champagne from a shelf under the podium. He raised his glass and called out,
To Marko and Carl!
And the cheers rang out.
Carl watched as the Admiral spoke ..
" .... On that note I would like to invite Acting Ensign Marko Ramius to join me on stage please .... "
Pleased as Marko was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, he more than deserved it .. He clapped as the COO got up on stage to receive his pips ..
"Marko joined us aboard the Raven straight out of the Academy .. Since his very first moment aboard he has gone out of his way to integrate himself into the crew .. He joined the crew at a time where things were in the air .. What with us just having lost one of the Senior officers to reassignment and our embarking on last mission .. In line with his exemplary performance since joining the Raven .. I have been authorized by Starfleet Command to promote Marko to the rank of Lieutenant Commander .. With all of the privileges and responsibilities accompanying that rank .. Congratulations, Lieutenant Commander."
Carl was about to turn away and get another drink from the bar, when Mc began to speak again .. This time asking Carl himself to step up onto the stage .. Not quite sure why he'd be asked up, he climbed the two steps, getting a pat on the back by someone as he passed .. He nodded to Marko who was beaming from ear to ear trying to keep the assembled personnel in view while looking into the black felt-covered box containing his new rank insignia .. Torek grinned inwardly, he'd been there, done just that .. Then Mc addressed the group again ...
"Carl." he began, smiling at Toreks' obvious puzzlement, "Since you came aboard the Raven .. Way back when you were in Mr Ramius' position .. You have a huge been asset to the Raven .. But more so to me .. I have absolute faith in your abilities as a Command officer, but also as a friend .. Your command style is one which makes you approachable by anyone, be they an Acting Ensign who has just joined the ship through to an experienced Commander .. That is not something that can be taught .. It is a skill which a lot of Command officers lack .. You have it in abundance .. As such .. I am pleased to say that you have passed your trial time as XO with flying colors .. I am hereby confirming your position as First Officer of the USS Raven with immediate effect.
He didn't quite know what to say, or how to react, as Mc stepped forward and took Carl's hand, shaking it firmly, with warmth and respect. Torek returned the hand-shake in kind .. Quietly thanking the Admiral for his words, and for confirming him as Executive Officer .. He knew full well that it would never have happened without the help and guidance of Mc7 himself, Steven Smith, and Matt Reynolds .. But also the help, trust, and confidence of a bloody good crew ! .. Each one, in his view, deserved a mention, but they knew who they were ...
Mc retrieved a glass of Champagne he'd somehow hidden in the slim podium, and raised it ...
"To Marko and Carl !" Mc said ...
Everyone raised their own drinks, echoing the toast and taking a drink .. Then each and everyone of the assembled crew began to cheer .. Carl turned to Marko, and the two congratulated each other before turning, to somewhat embarrassingly, take the applause ..
Mc didn't fail to notice the appreciation on Captain James's face as even he applauded .. Mc was pleased .. This, was his family and he made sure that if praise was deserved, it was given ..........
"Yes you are right Admiral, though I think its best to keep the senior staff informed about important crew roster changes," David said making sure to look at the young Commander. He had nothing against them, but he knew that they wouldn't feel the same thing about him. When an internal investigation was done on one's commanding officer they tended to get defensive and offensive really quickly.
David decided that it would be best to begin his investigation after the Raven was underway. It would allow him to test the crew in real conditions and see how they react.
As the promotion ceremony ended with applause, David made a mental note to speak with the entire senior staff and Commander McLean. He would need to speak to them all and see if they would help him conduct his investigation. He was sure that most of them would tell him know, but if he had to he would order them to.
"Computer leave a brief message for the entire senior staff to meet me at 2000 hours tomorrow beginning with Commander Torek," David said.
"Affirmative"
As the Admiral, Carl, and Marko left the stage, several people congratulated the two officers.. Mc watched as Captain James spoke, obviously to either the bases computer, or the Raven's .. Once done, he gave a brief nod to Mc and began to move away. Mc neither knew, or cared, at the moment whether the man had left the ceremony, or was simply mingling ..
"You any idea who he is Admiral ?" Carl asked from just behind Mc.
"Oh i've an idea yes ..." Mc replied, turning to speak more quietly, "He's Intelligence ..."
"You're sure ?"
"As sure as I need to be yes .. But no doubt he'll be informing you himself at some point."
"Then he's here for the up-coming mission or ..." Carl didn't finish the sentence as Mc drained his glass and shrugged ..
"Another drink Carl ?" the Admiral asked, heading for the bar ..
Torek watched him go .. Not able to read his Commanding Officers' expression ..........
After bluntly rebuffing the Captain James, Marko waited for Mc’s response he wasn’t looking forward to it. He was surrounded by 3 superiors and bluntly insulted one like it was nothing…
”Marko, please remember correct protocol when speaking to a senior officer. And Captain, I would hope that I don't need to remind you of the same. When a member of my crew asks me a question then it is me they ask it to. Please remember that. I have a promotion ceremony to conduct. You and I will meet in my ready room aboard the Raven in 3 hours, where you can explain your purpose here.”
Being reminded of protocol was a mere slap on the wrist Marko mused, pleasantly surprised by Mc’s response. Truth was he had known Mc from before his time on the Raven, Marko and Mc had met at school years ago and had always stayed in contact. It was Mc who had convinced Marko to join StarFleet and the Raven. As Marko was reminiscing on the past, Mc had moved up to the stage and the podium and was about to begin the ceremony. Marko stood near the front, Mc had spoken to him prior to the ceremony to let him know that he was one of the crew being rewarded for his hard work. Mc began his speech…
“It is time for us to recognize those among us who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in recent times. On that note I would like to invite Acting Ensign Marko Ramius to join me on stage please.”
Marko smiled and received a few pats on the back as he headed through the 2 rows in front of him and the stage, stopping beside Admiral Mc. Mc began by running through how Marko had joined the crew…
”In line with his exemplary performance since joining the Raven, I have been authorized by Starfleet Command to promote Marko to the rank of Lt Cmdr, with all of the privileges and responsibilities accompanying. Congratulations”
Marko was smiling from ear to ear, this was a proud moment for him and one he would not forget in a hurry as his friend Mc handed him a small black box containing his new pips. Marko shook Mc’s hand vigoroulsly in thanks to his Captain and mentor. After Mc had affixed Marko’s new pips he began with the second promotion of the ships XO, Carl. Marko could not be happier. Carl had shaped Marko into the officer he was today and his experience was invaluable upon arriving on the Raven and becoming its COO.
After Mc, had congratulated Carl and handed him his new pips Marko reached over and patted Carl on the back and shook his hand. He smiled, humbled by the whole event – Marko couldn’t stop smiling as Mc grabbed a glass of Champagne and ended with a toast.
"To Marko and Carl !"
The crew echoed the Captain's toast and both Marko and Carl blushed, flattered and Marko was strangely surprised by the response. The three left the stage and Marko grabbed his own glass of champagne and began to enjoy the plaudits from his fellow crew members.
