History
Andae Blakus was born in the Eternal City (Rome) in Italy, Earth. He was not raised in the country however. When young (7) he moved (with his parents, brother and two sisters) to the United Kingdom, and then on to the United States of America to progress with his studies. In truth, it was to get closer to San Francisco in preparation of applying to Starfleet Academy.
Despite resolving never to look back upon leaving Rome Blakus did so and has done so often, and looks back favourably on his old country, despite not being able to remember a great deal of it. He is very fond of his heritage and defends it with conviction. Blakus’ life in the United Kingdom spanned 10 years, despite the relatively short stay Blakus settled in remarkably well and thoroughly enjoyed his time there. There was however mass upheaval in Blakus’ last year in the UK before moving to the USA. His parents divorced three months before he left, this had a huge impact on him and he arrived in the USA feeling lonely and lost. Fortunately for Blakus, his strength at adaptation made sure he adjusted quickly and gained two universal degrees before his application to the Academy. Applying to the academy was not always Blakus’ objective, but as he always wanted to explore space, he considered Starfleet the best option.
As explained above, Andae Blakus is Italian born, yet has lived the majority of his life in the United Kingdom and United States. His family is an odd one, his name and appearance is more in fitting with Imperial Rome rather than modern Italy. There is evidence that his family are descended straight from ancient Romans with much less mingling of blood than with other Italians.
Blakus's academy training mission aboard the USS Hepta. The entity known as 'Q' propelled the Hepta to the future, where the ship and crew had to stave off the USS Hanson-B and a 'Species 8472' warship. Cadet Blakus immediately proved his worth, devising a slingshot manoeuvre around a nearby star which returned the ship to its own time. During the mission, Blakus came close to death in an experience with the Q entity that was communicating to him through his brain, displaying to him a 'mirror' world of abstract images that reflected what was happening in the 'real' world. Blakus was taken with wonder at the concept but at the same time, his righteousness and overriding will to serve Starfleet and prove himself in the eyes of his peers, pushed him to eventually break out of the dream-state (albeit at Q's whim) so that he could help the Hepta home.
Andae graduated well at the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to the USS Victory-C as Chief Engineering officer under Captain Nikaila Cir'Kem.
USS Victory's assignment to partake in the signing of a peace treaty in an unaligned system. Blakus had to fight rejection from some of his engineering staff and also his personal problems with being able to trust others to do a job. His perceived arrogance did him little favours in his own department but gradually all of his team learnt to accept his odd sarcastic manner. Blakus was pushed hard to repair the damage done to the Victory by the pre-nova state of the unaligned system's star, so that the Victory could evacuate the system's inhabitants. Blakus worked with Lieutenant Colonel Tiberian Wong to prevent the star's nova, by modifying a shuttle, and then monitoring it as Colonel Wong flew it into the star to stabilise its core. The plan worked, but Blakus (and Wong) were punished and confined to quarters (and brig) for the return to Starbase Assailant, at which point they were officially reprimanded. Blakus did not regret his actions and vowed that he would do the same thing again if the situation arose. During the course of this mission, Blakus realised just how highly moral-strung and headstrong he could be; but he was not surprised at his willingness to save a species of people he did not know, as is in line with his moral character.
Blakus is sometimes viewed as arrogant, which may in a way be true. His occasional scorn of other’s ideas is often viewed as ignorance. The reason for this is because Blakus’ state of mind is such that from his point of view, he doesn’t just think he’s right in all matters, he knows that he’s right in all matters. Unfortunately, this often leads to him dismissing things out of hand.
