Cadet William Walters sat among a sea of cadets, his grey uniform with yellow shoulders among a sea of similar uniforms. Most of the cadets had their attention on the guest speaker, but a few were losing themselves in PADDs, and a few others were obviously nursing headaches. Will couldn’t blame them, temporal mechanics was a difficult subject at best, but he found it interesting.
Down on the stage Director Laarin Andos of the Department of Temporal Investigations was wrapping up her presentation. The Rhaandarite woman had spent most of the period detailing the various types of temporal anomalies and effects of time travel that the average Starfleet officer could encounter, and now was detailing the importance of the Temporal Prime Directive.
“As much as the Prime Directive protects us from the dangers of interfering with other cultures, the Temporal Prime Directive protects us from the dangers of interfering with time. While you may be tempted to get close to anomalies for scientific study, something that is quite admirable, you must take the utmost care to ensure you do not be displaced. The DTI recognizes that accidents happen, but still, the best defense against a TPD violation is to not travel in time. And it saves everyone from a mountain of paperwork.” A number of people laughed at the last line and everyone applauded.
Dr. Benzan stood and addressed the class. “Thank you for coming and making this presentation Director Andos. Are there any questions for her?”
Will’s hand was the first one in the air and the Director acknowledged him. Standing as was proper, “Who does the actual policing of temporal policy Director Andos? Does the Department of Temporal Investigations handle all of the policing duties or is it shared among others?”
The Director stepped forward. “That is a good question Cadet. While we hope that Starfleet officers would keep themselves out of temporal trouble, or be self-policing about intentional violations, that is not possible. Civilian ships do get flung throughout time and other governments have to take care of themselves. Still, we are not alone.
“You see, one problem the DTI has in the policing department is that we do not have viable and reliable time travel technology. We can make sure that Federation citizens obey the rules, but that’s about it. Thankfully though, we aren’t alone. Thanks to some temporal incursions we are aware of other organizations that are dedicated to upholding the Temporal Prime Directive, and the Temporal Accords. The 29th century has the Temporal Integrity Commission, the 31st has the Federation Temporal Agency. In fact, in the 31st century the Federation has expanded its role: Starfleet exploring and patrolling space, a Timefleet exploring and policing time. In fact, from what we’ve learned, the Federation itself has expanded, calling itself the United Temporal Federation of Planets to reflect their expanded role and status.”
That last bit of info set off a flurry of commentary, and Dr. Benzan had to call for attention. “Yes, I did reveal a bit of information about the future, but don’t worry, what I’ve said is pretty much everything we know. Now I’ve gone on for a bit, but to quickly recap, yes, the DTI does the policing, but we’re not the only ones. Starfleet is expected to self-police by taking great care, and there are other organizations from uptime that also ensure that the timeline follows its path.”
Will nodded in thanks and returned to his seat while another asked their question.

Kyle was sitting on a bench outside the main building of the Academy. He was going over in his head what he had just written down in his log. They had just finished learning the basic equipment that every field medical officer must carry with them at all times. Kyle understood all the items and their functions, and he was proud of that. Now, he was just reflecting over what the professor had said along with the notes.

(OOC Note: The Section 47 Academy Campus is located on Starbase 47, with an entire level of the starbase dedicated to the Academy)
With a short break in the lecture schedules between classes, the corridors of the Academy were flooded with Cadets moving from one class to another. He had been stopped at least 5 times in the past minute by nervous-looking Cadets that weren't sure of their way around, but were hesitant to ask the Commandant himself. But as Dan moved through the corridors, they seemed to make way for him as much because of his large stature as his rank and position.
Reaching a quieter area of the Academy, he saw one Cadet dressed in a teal uniform, pouring over some notes. Looking over the Cadet's shoulder, trying and failing to be inconspicuous, he looked at the notes.
"Medical field equipment, I see?" Dan asked, his deep voice nearly rumbling the wall and floor. "You must be one of our future doctors whose career ambition is to be a miracle worker and rid the entire quadrant of disease forever." He smiled. "Commander Trek, at your service, but my friends call me Dan."

Niles walked into the Class room full of excitement. He enrolled in star fleet academy after taking a gap year from school. His love of medicine had jolted him into becoming a Doctor. During his year off traveling the globe. He had fallen for a freighter captain. She had encouraged a new love for him, a love of space travel. Then she had gone, she had picked up a contract with the romulan empire and left. She'd broken his heart but left him a gift.
While waiting for class to begin Niles began reflecting on the reason why he became interested in medicine. He remembered holding his Grandfathers hand, tears running down his face and looking up into the frail, Grey face on a man he used to know. A man he used to play catch with and run through the park with, a man who used to squeeze him so tight when he hadn't seen him in months. Now though he could barely squeeze a little boys had. He remembered as he was lead away from the room, he couldn't help thinking when he would see his grandpa again. Then a few hours later his parents tried to explain that his grandfather wasn't coming back. Trying to grasp what had happened he read his fathers medical journals, he went to the library read padds on anatomy, biology, physics. and when he finally understood why and how it happened he was hooked.
"Excuse me is anyone sitting here" He was startled by the soft voice of a fellow student.
"Oh sorry, No. Please" He gestured for the woman to sit down. And they waited for the instructor to arrive.

As Dan took the stage of the lecture hall with the class instructor by his side, the previous buzz filling the room ceased almost instantly. But then, even without the uniform and rank, his size and appearance alone were enough of a show stopper. At two meters tall with orange skin, most of them had probably never seen a member of his species before.
“You could hear a pin drop in here,” Doctor Black muttered beside him.
“Told you you were imposing,” Dan said in jest before turning to address the room.
“Good morning. I am Commander Trek, the Academy Commandant, and it is my privilege to be the first to welcome you to the Section 47 Academy. Here you will have the opportunity to be instructed from some of finest officers in the sector, and some of you will go on to become valuable officers in Section 47. If you need anything, my door is always open, so feel free to stop by if there is anything I can do for you.”
Dan gave a quick gesture to Doctor Black to check whether he was ready, and when he got a confirming nod, he added, “I will now turn you over to our lead Medical Instructor, Doctor Jason Black. I wish you all the best during your time hear. Doctor?”

As Commander Trek departed, Jason took center stage. Looking out at his students, he wasn’t much older than most of them, and was even younger than some in the cases of students with long lifespans. Sometimes it only seemed like yesterday he was in their places.
“Good morning, I am Doctor Jason Black, your Medical Instructor, and I will be my job to guide you through the adventure that will be your medical education. Serving in Starfleet Medical offers opportunities you will find nowhere else, as well as challenges the likes of which you haven’t even begun to imagine.”
“So, some of you may be looking at me and thinking that I look rather young to be someone of my rank and position. For phenomena we will explore in the future, I am 357 years old.” He paused a moment to let that sink in, then laughed. “I’m kidding, I’m no older than I appear to be. But despite my age, I’ve seen many things in my time. And you will probably hear most of my stories in time, particularly when we get to talking about the more exotic illnesses and about medical emergencies.”
“And so, let us begin…”

Commander Trek had left after a nice short and sweet introduction. And a man no older than himself stood before the class. If possible the man looked younger than him. Doctor Jason Black introduced himself, quite well and even added a little humor to the occasion.
"My god he looks really young" Niles whispered to the woman by his side. She just smiled looking straight ahead with a gentle nod of acknowledgment.
So Niles sat back wandering whether a man so young would have the experience to make this room full inexperienced people into fine star fleet medical officers. He was sure though that an Officer with Commander Treks experience and reputation, had picked the right candidate for the job.
Niles found himself wandering if he would one day be in that mans shoes. Teaching fresh faced pupils, And making officers out of them so they could then teach future..... he could go on and on with these thoughts. The word he was looking for though was legacy. He wanted to leave a legacy.
He took put his padd, A sterile tissue and a spray, and proceeded to wipe his padd down. Spray and wipe. This procedure drew the attention of the student sitting next to him.
"what are you doing?" She whispered curiously.
"This oh, Well I'm disinfecting my Padd, You can't be to careful these days. Dust carries bacteria which carries germs. Germs make you ill Which lowers your immune system which can make you catch something worse which can lead to serious illness or .... well ..... death" Niles lectured quietly.
The women smiled and then half stood clutching her belongings and ducked to another seat. Niles regretted whispering his words of paranoia and hypochondria. he always drove people to a distance by scaring them with his knowledge, of infections and deceases, those that were listed in the databases in the earth libraries.
Then he realized that he hadn't been paying attention. And the voice lecturing in the background had stopped...

Jason stood at the front of the room, the course syllabus displayed on a large screen behind him. He was in the process of giving a brief overview of their current course.
As he looked around the room, looking at their faces to gauge comfort level and understanding, a hissing sound caught his attention. One student appeared to cleaning his PADD. A young women next to him got a look of concern, and quickly moved.
Jason stopped. "Is there some problem with your PADD, Cadet?" he called out.
He got no response at first, but the student seemed to notice that had changed, and looked around a bit. After his eyes finally started looking forward, and met Jason's, Jason repeated his question.
"I said, is there something wrong with your PADD, Cadet?"
(OOC: How long we maintain the classroom setting is up to you, Niles. Feel free to jump to the end of the lecture and approach myself or Dan, if you wish to.)

After Hearing the question Niles took a moment to realise that it was directed towards himself. Then as his heart sank with embarrassment he slowly turned his head. As his eyes met Dr Blacks he felt hundreds of other eyes burning through layers of his skin until they burned right through to the very bare essence of him. There he was bare and as innocent as a child. He could feel his cheeks turn slightly more red then usual as the Doctor repeated his question, his tone changing this time as if he was upset that his lecture had been interrupted.
He reminded Niles of his father with that tone, the guilt rushed over him fast, and swiftly changed his emotions from mature adult to wronged schoolboy. Niles quickly composed himself mid wipe of his padd.
"No sir, Just making sure my tools for learning are clean and ready for use" Stupid he thought as he said it.
Now everyone knew he was a clean freak, a hypochondriac with paranoia. Doctor Black looked at Niles for a second more then continued with the lecture. This time Niles was paying attention.
--------------------------------------A Few Hours later-------------------------------------------------------
The lecture had Finished and everyone had left the confines of the classroom. Niles was looking over his padd enjoying a ractogino, after getting the patron to wipe the cup vigorously several times. In the end the poor bar tender just replicated a new cup, and sterilized it.
Niles took a sip from his cup, looking up as he did so. His eyes met the figure of a star fleet commander passing the across his view. This was it he thought time to make amends.
As he thought this he realized as his head was turning following Doctor Jason Black, His cup wasn't he had poured his ractogino down the trouser leg of his cadet uniform. He gritted his teeth while inhale to hold back a yelp, Half wiped himself down with a serviette and raised a hand to get the commanders attention.
"Commander Black" Niles yelled after him. After yelling several times and feeling those eyes burn again he finally caught Dr Blacks attention.
"WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN ME?" He asked from a distance. Realizing the eyes again he turned and said " Don't You people have drinks to attend to".

As Jason passed through a common area, his attention was occupied pondering over a patient. That wall was slowly being cut through by a voice he could hear repeatedly calling out, but it took him a while before he paid attention to what was being said. When he finally did, he recognized it was his own name. Looking around, he spotted a Cadet looking at him, trying to get his attention, asking Jason to join him.
Jason turned and headed over. Didn't he look familiar? Oh right, from lecture earlier.
"Good afternoon, Cadet," Jason said, taking a seat by him. "And please, call me Jason. I don't believe that personnel of similiar ages should stand on ceremony, regardless of what the regs say."
A server came over, and Jason added, "Oh, my usual, please."
Turning his attention back to his companion, Jason said, "So Cadet, how's your first day going?"

Niles gestured for them both to sit. "My first day si..... Jason. Well it's going good." He paused while he took a sip from his ractogino. " I just wanted to apologize for interrupting the lecture earlier. It's just i have a bit of a phobia of germs, bacteria and unclean things." He finished his sentence and took another sip of his drink. "But all in all s... Jason. I really enjoyed your lecture especially the stories about the new viruses you have encountered, What's it like to go to the stars and cure different species and discover new cures?" He took another sip and removed a napkin from his pocket and wiped the rim of his cup where some of his drink had ran down the side. "is it all it's cracked up to be? Star fleet i mean."
Niles sat contemplating what he had just said and wandered whether he had taken a breath. Jason's drink arrived. And Niles waited for an answer to his apology and the questions he had asked. Jason seemed to be absorbing the young cadets rant.
Jason took a sip from his drink, And Niles noticed that some drink had escaped his cup to, Niles offered the napkin to him. Niles felt an fool here was this Officer welcoming him with a warm hand, and Niles was putting a used napkin in it. He looked down at his drink embarrassed about what had just occurred in the last 30 seconds.

"Clumsy me, huh?" Jason said, cleaning up his spill, and then held up the napkin briefly before putting it down. "Thanks for that."
"There's no need to apologize, Cadet. You weren't interrupting. I was concerned, not annoyed. You're a hypochondriac, I understand. You'll find that every posting you'll ever have will have at least on in residence." He looked around a moment. "This one has quite a few more of them, thanks to its size."
Now getting to Niles's question, Jason said, "Starfleet is...the greatest adventure you will ever have. It will also present you with the greatest challenges you have ever had. You never know what you're going to find out there. And the thing about discovering new cures is that, while you feel a great sense of accomplishment after its done, the process of doing so can be quite unpleasant. Because usually its usually it is for something you've never seen before, and at first you have no idea what to do. The process of trial and error can be very frustrating, and you'll find yourself banging your head against the wall...sometimes quite literally."
Jason took another sip, a little more careful not to any spill this time, and continued in a lower, more subdued tone. "And there will be people you can't help, and those cases will tear you apart inside. You will have people die on you, and you never get used to it."
He fell silent for a moment, thinking about some of them.

Niles saw Jason get lost in his own thoughts, and knew kind of what he was going through. His grandfather passing had been the whole reason he had become interested in medicine. Trying to find the meaning of life, the reason of being and why we die. In the end Niles had come to except that there was nothing to be done. Unless illness was the cause then there was a glimmer of hope in the hands of the medical professional. so he had decided in Honor of his grandfather to become a doctor, after years of studying his fathers medical journals and databases in the library.
Niles paused in his own thoughts looking upon Jason in silent thought. "My Grandfather" Niles blurted out.
Jason raised his head snapped out of the place he had retrieved to in his minds eye. "My grandfather dying is the reason i got into medicine....... As a young boy, i couldn't understand why he was not coming back so i set out to find out, i started small with my fathers medical journals, he's a doctor.... well was, retired now." Niles paused
"Then i got my hands on some pretty interesting articles on anatomy in the earths database, that pretty much explained it to me. But by then it was too late i was hooked. and as for the clean think and the hypochondria that came from learning about the viruses deceases and other things you can contract from things as simple as an unclean cup." Niles paused again to take a sip from his drink.
"What about you? What got you into medicine?" Niles smiled warmly finally now relaxing.

"My reason is similar to yours, though for me it was my sister," Jason said. I was ten, she was seven. She was playing in a tree when she fell out of it, hitting her head on a small, sharp rock sticking up out of the ground. I was there at her beside when she died, powerless to do anything. From that I decided I wanted to help people get better, so that something like that wouldn't ever happen again. I was first trained in First Aid, then became a Medic, and then finally went to medical school."
He took another sip. "While I had to quickly learn that even with the knowledge I have now, there's sometimes nothing you can do, I don't let that stop me from trying."
"So where do you call home?"

Niles, in case you hadn't seen in yet, you've been assigned as Chief Medical Officer of the USS El Salvador-B, under the command of Commodore Savot.
Good luck on your assignment!

Caris Moset nervously wandered the promenade of the starbase. Graduation had gone over like a whirlwind, and now all she could do was wait to hear about her assignment. She already had all her bags packed up, which would seem rather silly if she was assigned here, but that seemed unlikely and she always liked being prepared.
"Why Hello Ensign Moset" a voic leapt out from the crowd. A moment later Caris could see it was from Cadet Randy Crall, a human who was year beneath that her she had be friended in the Academy Dom-Jot club.
"Randy!" she exclaimed, a smile leaping to her face. "You're next, just a year of tests and studying to go and you'll be pulling on the uniform."
"Sure, if Commander T'leth doesn't finish me off." He laughed, the Vulcan physics professor was ever very found of Randy's sense of humor and never wasted a moment to chastise the young man. "Want to grab a drink, you've earned it."
"Sure." Caris said and together they found a seat in the cantina.
"What can I get you ensign, cadet?" The waiter asked.
Caris was still getting used to the new title, but it sounded great. "I'll have a tonic water."
"Phh, that's it. come on Caris, cel-a-brate." Randy scoffed.
"And have a glass of synthahol, what's the point?" Caris rolled her eyes. "Just the tonic, thanks."
And the cadet?"
"A root beer if you would."
"What about that synthahol?"
"What's the point." he laughed.

Caris did not even have a chance to take a single sip of her tonic water before her comm badge chimmed in
"Ensign Moset, we have your assignment posted. Please report to the USS El Salvador."
"The El Salvador!" Caris squealed, "Thank the stars, I thought I was going to stay stuck on a Star Base!"
"Congrats Caris, maybe one day I'll join you" Randy grinned. "Guess you should get going."
With that Caris headed off to her quarters to grab her things as quickly as she could, it took all her self control not to run the whole way.

Ensign Marionette walked into the stations Cantina, sidestepping to let a Bolian woman pass. Marionette was a Positronic android, or rather a gynoid more specifically, the likes of which haven't been seen since Lt Commander Data joined starfleet.
Making her way to the Dam-jot table, watching as the rest of the crowd reacted to the moves and results of, and encouraged the 3 players; a ferengi, a vulcan, and a caitian.

Scanning the crowd, Dan couldn't help but notice the human-looking female that had just entered. It wasn't often that he saw such that were as tall as himself. He couldn't place it, but certain things about her appearance suggested that she wasn't quite human.
Making his way over to her, he stood a few feet away and joined her in watching. "Dam-jot is an interesting game, isn't it?"

"Dam-jot is an interesting game, isn't it?"
Marionette turned to look abit downward, due to her statuesque height, laying eyes on the mans rank pips. Commander 1st class. "yes it is sir, i find it most interesting that the game uses a gelatinous media on the field, to impede the movement of the players ball. "

"It is, isn't it? It increases the difficulty of the game, making it easier to under or overestimate the amount of force needed. That therefore increases the necessary skill required to be successful at it."
He smiled, red eyes glinting. "And its hardly necessary to call me 'sir' Ensign. All new officers are more than welcomed to call me Dan."

Marionette scanned him up and down, similar to how one might 'undress someone with their eyes', but there was nothing sexual about it, and meeting his red eyes with her mirrored eyes. A ghost of a smile passed across her face, very much a Vulcan 'expression', for those who were keen enough to pick up on vulcan moods, however muted.
"Very well, Commander Dan."
The crowd then boo'ed and hissed as the ferengi lost the game to the catian, and very un-sportsman-like, started accusing the catian officer, a mustard-shirted Lt jg, of cheating - when in fact it was the Ferengi who cheated by using a 'power stick', a dam-jot rod with more actuators crammed into it than is allowed, and evidenced by a heavier weight, as well as the wrong screw-heads; slot screwheads, rather than triangular.
the catian, noticing the different screws, counter-accused the ferengi. A tense moment ...... It could get ugly really fast.

"Hmm, perhaps we should remove ourselves from the area," Dan suggested, more quietly. "Given both our physical statures, we might accidentally use too much force in protecting ourselves. But then again, we might be helpful in keeping order."
He then added, "And there is no need to use my rank. 'Dan' is just fine."
