Down on the planet’s surface, Kenny Walker was warming himself by the campfire. The night was cold and the sky full of stars. He wondered how many of the Narojabs had gazed at these stars and pondered their origin. Did they understand the distances involved? Did they suspect the wonders of science that these pinpricks of light represented? Although most cultures who developed industrial technology had a basic understanding of astronomy, this was not universal and Walker was desperate to know how much the Narojabs knew. He then began to wonder how much the visiting aliens had told them, and how much they had affected the scientific development of the native culture. He didn’t see how passing on information about the contents of the universe could adversely affect their development, but Starfleet clearly knew better and the decision wasn’t his to make.
”Geez, it’s cold tonight,” Kenny shivered, throwing extra wood on the fire. ”Indeed,” responded Disasterman, though Kenny didn’t think he looked particularly cold. Damion and Gary were keeping watch - the FO had decided to operate a two-on/two-off shift system, and they had volunteered to watch first. "Do you think we'll be able to help cure the Narojabs, sir?" "I think we'll be able to offer them medical assistance for their current ailments; whether we manage to eliminate the source of the problem is another matter..." Kenny pondered this for a few moments. Disasterman quietly experimented with his natural camoflage abilities to see if he could get them to work through the surgical alterations. He had limited success. "Who's this Tobias chap, anyway? I've never heard of him before." "We've run into him in the past. He's what you'd call a mercenary, I suppose. There are some, however, who would describe him as a thief, a con-artist or a fraudster. They all seem to apply equally in my opinion." "So I take it his presence isn't a good thing?" Walker asked, then threw a few more sticks onto the fire. "It complicates things a little with regard to how we handle the situation, but it gives us more justification for interfering. Tobias is subject to Federation law." "I see. Well I for one am eager to get out there to see how we can help these Narojabs." "All in good time, Kenny. All in good time..."

Back up in space, things had begun to happen. =/\= Bridge to Elron =/\= the voice of the tactical officer came over the comm system. The Admiral tapped his commbadge immediately. "Elron here, go ahead." =/\= Sir, the alien vessel is moving towards us with weapons charged. Shields are at full and we're prepared to take evasive action. =/\= The relief tactical officer's voice was extremely calm. "I'm on my way. Defensive strategies only. Take out their weapons if you have to, but no more than that. Bema and I will be there as soon as we can. =/\= Aye, sir. =/\= They were practically at the turbolift anyway, so it didn't take them long to get to the bridge. "Deck 1, direct route, authorisation: ELRON-GAMMA-FIVE-GREEN," the Admiral ordered. 'Command over-ride acknowledged' the computer responded. The direct-route command meant that the whole turbolift network was redirected to clear the fastest possible route for this lift. It also meant it didn't stop to pick up anyone else. They arrived in record time, just as the view screen was changing to display the incoming vessel. It didn't look particularly menacing. Bema took over the conn and Elron took back the command chair. "Status report," Elron ordered. "They haven't fired yet, sir. Their advance is slow but..." At that precise moment the bridge rocked, stopping the tactical officer mid-sentence. "Directed plasma weapon fired directly at the bridge!" he reported in a surprised voice. "No damage and shields at 100%" Elron frowned. "They know they can't do us any serious damage. What are hoping to achieve by this? "Taking evasive action," reported Bema. "They're trying to distract us from something... but what? Get me a progress report from the Away Team as soon as possible!" A few moments later, Wolf's console bleeped solemnly. "No response from the team and no sensor data from the shuttle; there may be something blocking our transmissions." "Let's hope that's all it is. Arm phaser banks. Target their plasma emitters, but hold off from firing as long as possible. Let's see how bold they really are..."

CMDRfc Disasterman was sitting by the fire trying his best to get his camouflage to work, but at most was able to get the tips of his fingers to change colors slightly. After a little time he gave up and looked at the fire. He really didn't need the warmth of the fire, but he knew that Kenny Walker needed someone there to help calm his nerves. After some talk about the Narojab's and the current health problems and Tobias, that low-down scoundrel, Disasterman got up to check with the others who where standing watch. After getting assurance that everything was clear, the Commander told Gary that he was going to catch a bit of sleep and to wake him in 2 hours for his shift. Disasterman went back to the fire and laid down to try and catch a little sleep. Kenny was already asleep by the time that Disasterman had drifted off. What seemed like 5 minutes later Gary was there shaking Disasterman to wake him for his shift.
Kenny and Disasterman took their positions while Gary and Damion tried to get a little sleep themselves. Disasterman told Kenny that they were going to take an extra shift to let the others sleep a little longer. He assured Kenny that the two of them would get to get some more sleep before the night was over. Disasterman sat there watching the horizon for any signs of movement other than the occasional wildlife that happened to still be up at that time of night. He sat there thinking about how they were going to use their limited supplies to try and help the villagers. He also knew what he had to do, he needed to talked to Neb and Arik about Tobias, the aliens, and the faulty replicators. He knew he really needed to get back in the structure and run some tests on those replicators, but how does he get in there without to many questions being asked about how he knew about them being there already. He knew he was going to have to reveal that they themselves were 'alien' to this planet, but that would have to wait. Four hours passed with no problems. Disasterman woke Gary and Damion and told them about letting them sleep a little longer. Gary offered for Disasterman and Kenny to sleep for the next 4 hours which Disasterman agreed to without letting on that they were going to anyway.
About an hour later Disasterman was waken from a deep sleep by Damion yelling that there was something coming from space and it was coming fast. Disasterman quickly put the fire out and met Kenny and Gary at Damion's post. They all looked at the craft that was heading towards the planet. The craft seemed to be heading towards the first craft, but something about this ship was different. The four men took to the trees to find some hiding places as the craft flew over their heads. Disasterman used hand signals for them to move forward slowly as the craft landed. The hatch opened slowly and from it emerged.....

"So how is Kate doing these days?" Elron asked informally. Bema simled at the diversion. "She is doing fine, going crazy at not being on duty," Bema replied cheerfully. His smile was short lived as Elron's commbadge chirped. =/\= Bridge to Elron =/\= the voice of the tactical officer came over the comm system. The Admiral tapped his commbadge immediately. Soon both Bema and Elron walked onto the bridge, as soon as they reached the bridge Bema took his station. "Status report," Elron ordered. "They haven't fired yet, sir. Their advance is slow but..." At that precise moment the bridge rocked, stopping the tactical officer mid-sentence. "Directed plasma weapon fired directly at the bridge!" he reported in a surprised voice. "Admiral, Tobias' ship has entered the atmosphere and he's......wait...sir, there are five more ships of the same configuration as the attacking ship coming in. They are on an intercept course and arming weapons," he said sounding panicked. "With those extra ships they might have enough firepower to do some damage," Lieutenant Flywheel said calmly. " Red alert all hands battle stations. Bema get us out of orbit, full impulse," Elron ordered as the klaxon began to sound. OOC: Tag anyone.

This was a turn of events that Elron had hoped to avoid. Not only were they engaged in open conflict with these new aliens, back-up had been called in and the Tulip was clearly out-numbered if not out-gunned. He would have to minimise the amount of damage done to both sides in order to avoid a disastrous First Contact. Starfleet might have to reconsider his promotion to Fleet Admiral, he thought to himself dryly.
"Bema, get us out of orbit - full impulse," Elron ordered urgently. The sooner they were free of the planet's pull, the sooner the Tulip would have full manoeuvrability and the easier it would be to take advantage of their powerful impulse engines and RCS thrusters. The alien ships were considerably smaller and therefore nimbler, but the Sovereign class could easily target multiple moving targets and was surprisingly agile for its size.
The ships appeared on screen and Elron watched as they commenced simultaneous firing on his starship. There on the bridge, the officers felt the ship rock ever so slightly. "Shields at 98% and holding. Looks like they're preparing torpedoes," reported Lieutenant Pendleton, the relief tactical officer. As Bema brought them around in a long arc, a brief volley of antimatter warheads flew at the Tulip. Many of the torpedoes sailed past the ship while some struck the dorsal shield. Their energy was absorbed in an electric-blue halo of light. "Shields at 95%." Pendleton redistributed power allocation across the shield grids and returned fire, targeting the nearest ship's beam weapons. The orange harpoon of the Tulip's phasers shot out and pierced the attacker's shields and armour. Within a second, two further shots had disabled the ship's primary weapons. Despite the hazardous situation, Elron was surprisingly unconcerned about his own ship's safety. He was rather more worried about the lives of those who were attacking him. He would soon find himself shaken out of this unconscious self-confidence, however.
One of the alien ships moved in close to the Tulip and launched a lone torpedo. Before the tactical officer could target the approaching green orb, it impacted on the Tulip's aft shields with an all-mighty explosion. This one sent sparks flying on the bridge. "Aft shields at 73%!" shouted Lt Pendleton over the wailing klaxon and the hiss of escaping gas. "What the hell was that?!" demanded Elron. "Looks like it was some kind of tricobalt explosive. I recommend we don't take many more hits like that." "Ya reckon?" the CO muttered sarcastically. "Bema, give us some distance so we can shoot those things down in advance." "Aye, sir. Increasing speed," came the response from the conn. At the science station, Wolf Flywheel was wondering why the Admiral was going so easy on these assailants. Any Romulan commander would have eliminated them without hesitation. He put those thoughts to one side however, and concentrated on his own duties. "The level of technology in those explosives don't seem consistent with the rest of their ship. Either they got this from somewhere else, or they've concentrated their technological advances into certain areas. We should be prepared for the fact that they may have other weapons up their sleeve." "Thank you, Commander."
Bema changed direction again, bringing them back in a tight swoop as the forward phaser arrays disabled another ship's engines.
[TAG: Bridge crew]
Meanwhile, down on the planet, Disasterman and Kenny were crouched next to Damion and Gary, watching the new ship land just a few hundred yards ahead of them. It was totally different to the previous ship - smaller and somehow cleaner looking. Eventually a hatch opened and out stepped a tall figure, lavishly dressed and striding out fast. As soon as the hatch closed behind him, the ship seemed to disappear with a shimmer. Kenny blinked in surprise. With a wave of his hand, Disasterman gave the order to follow him. Sticking to the trees, they followed as closely as they could without rousing suspicion. Had he not been so dressed, there would have been a danger of losing him in the village. The figure was greeted with great ceremony by the Narojabs, and led through the streets to a large domicile. The away team hoped that this was the location of Takud and the rest of his men, perhaps continuing 'negotiations' with the poor Narojab community leaders. Disasterman took the swift decision of placing Damion on watch from a discrete location outside the domicile, while the other three went to collect all their medical supplies to help the Narojabs. If there were any sign of activity or trouble, they could risk using their communicators.

Bema looked at Lieutenant Flywheel for a second and registerd the look of panic on the Science officer's face, after making a rather uncoventional loop with the Tulip. "Relax Lieutenant, I have been flying since I was a toddler," Bema said confidently as three bursts of blue shot from the saucer section's forward torpedo tube. "Please tell that to my stomach Commander," Flywheel said as his skin turned a green colour. "Sir, the final ship has been disabled," Lt Pendleton said as he visibly relaxed. "Thank you Mr. Pendleton stand down from Red Alert. Bema get us hidden before more ships show up and please nothing too fancy," Elron replied as he smiled at his navigations officer. Bema complied and within moments they were hidden behind a dead moon. "Now, Mr. Flywheel I want an analysis of all of the weapons on those ships. Use the sensor readings from the opperations department. Mr. Saberwyn you have the bridge, notify me when the lieutenant is finished his analysis or when the away team contacts us. OOC: Tag anyone.

Disasterman, Gary, and Kenny left Damion watching the large domicile where the newest alien entered and returned to the shuttlecraft to collect the medical supplies. After collecting all they had, Disasterman looked thru the computer to see what they could do with the limited amount of supplies they had. While searching, he came across a report where another Commander had treated an entire city by introducing a radioactive cure into the water supply. He continued reading to see what all was used. He knew that some of the things that had been used in that situation was local supplies, but it should be possible for them to find stuff along the same lines on this planet. After checking the supplies again, Disasterman came up with a list of things that needed to be found. He divided the list into four parts that way the items would be found faster. Disasterman had seen one of the items that he really needed near the domicile where the alien entered. He went after that item since he wanted to check in with Damion. Disasterman found the pieces of glass that he hoped could be used to form a crude microscope.
It took Disasterman a few minutes to find Damion. From the location Damion almost had a clear view into an open window where the meeting was going on. Disasterman pulled out his monocular and peered into the window. He saw what he guessed was the back of the new alien. There were several other people in the room that he wasn't sure who they were. In the middle of the far wall, sitting on what looked like a throne, sat Takud. Disasterman wanted to get closer to that window to be able to hear what was going on, but that window was not accessible due to it being on the second floor of the domicile. Disasterman told Damion to keep watching and that one of the others would relieve him shortly. He handed Damion a list of items for him to gather before he returned to the shuttle. This list was of items that wasn't the highest priority need at the moment. Disasterman finished gather the items on his list and a few other things that he saw that might come in handy.
Disasterman returned to the shuttle and began working on what he hoped was a cure, or at least something to help the people until decent supplies could be retrieved from the Tulip. Disasterman tried to contact Holli to make sure he was doing things right, but all he got was static. He knew that either they were being jammed or the Tulip was out of communication range. Soon the other items started rolling in as Kenny and Gary returned. Disasterman sent Kenny to relieve Damion after telling him that he would be relieved in a couple hours. Disasterman had the crude lab equipment about set up when Damion returned with his items. Disasterman set out to try and make an antidote to the radiation poisoning.

Crouching in his hidden location, Kenny watched through the window while discussions took on a heated appearance inside. It seemed to him like there was some disagreement between Takud's men, one that wasn't being resolved very quickly. Though Kenny could only see his back, the tall cloaked visitor near the window was starting to wave his fist around menacingly. Before things escalated any further though, Takud received a communication from his wrist-band. Everyone fell silent while he responded to it. The cloaked alien near the window turned slightly and Kenny saw him tap a few buttons on his belt. He also noticed for the first time that this alien was Trill. He had half-expected the argument to continue again, but it didn't. Whatever had happened, the looks on their faces seemed to suggest that the Trill had just won the argument. Kenny wondered how the rest of the away team was getting on with a cure for the Narojabs, and whether they had managed to locate and neutralise the rest of the harmful technology yet.
Back on the Black Tulip, Admiral Elron was sitting in his ready room recording a log entry. After finishing his account of the recent skirmish, he collated the data they'd gathered on both species and reviewed them for anything useful. He also checked the database to see whether there were any outstanding warrants for the arrest of the mercenary Tobias Erin, but as he suspected there was no mention of him. Tobias had a talent for staying one step ahead, which was why Elron liked to stay at least two ahead. He stood up from his desk, stretched and walked over to the replicator. He was about to order a mug of ginger tea when the ship rocked violently. He ran onto the bridge.
"Bema, report!" he ordered urgently. "A ship appeared from nowhere and began firing at us!" the CNO replied from the command chair, still shocked. "I thought we'd disabled all their ships," Elron frowned angrily. "So did I, sir. It only just appeared on sensors." "The ship fired a series of tachyon and polaron bursts directly at the aft shields. I remodulated the harmonics and reinforced the grids, but they managed to get a concentrated transporter beam through. I'm reading multiple intruders in the stardrive section." Elron responded to Pendleton's revelation immediately. "Seal the bridge and main engineering! Try to keep them contained wherever they are. Elron to J'Ka," he said, tapping his commbadge, "Code Red - you know what to do."
Now that he had time to stop and think for a moment, Elron knew who was behind this surprise assault. "Find that ship and blow it out of the sky! If anyone finds any readings on Tobias, I want his head mounted on my desk!" The crew could see their CO was a little frustrated.

Marines ran down the corridor full pelt as crewmembers locked themselves in secure rooms, avoiding the exchange of phaser fire. Conveniently for the Tulip's security and marine officers, the intruders had materialised on Deck 20 not far from the secondary armoury and brig. Containing this small group of invaders would not be a difficult task for the experienced men and women of Starfleet. An additional assault team had materialised at the aft of Deck 12 however, and these proved more difficult since there were far more civilian personnel around this area. There were also more corridors for them to weave through. The only sounds to be heard on these decks were the persistent stomping of heavy boots and the high-pitched screams of phaser energy, followed by the occasional explosion of a wall panel.
Up on the bridge, things were relatively quiet. "We have locations for what is hopefully all of the intruders. I'm erecting level-9 force fields around those locations," Pendleton reported calmly. "Someone's attempting to access the ship's systems… I'm re-routing command subroutines and alerting security," the female relief Ops Manager reported. There had been a dramatic increase in the number and frequency of console chirps and bleeps on the bridge in the last few minutes, as everyone did what they could to secure the ship's systems and help capture the intruders. Reports streamed in from all stations, but there were no reported casualties. "Status report on that attacking ship, Lt," Elron ordered sternly. "It's an automated transport, sir; unmanned and following an elaborate attack pattern. I'd say its main aim as to deliver its troops then do as much damage as possible to distract us." "And have you disabled it yet, Mr Pendleton?" the Admiral asked with uncharacteristic impatience. Several direct hits on the ships engines… looks like its reaction chamber is overloading." There were three low chirps from the tactical station as the attacking vessel exploded. "Transport destroyed."
"Right, take us out from behind this moon. Put us in a sub-synchronous orbit of the planet - I don't care who sees us. I want locations for the away team and I want to know their status immediately."
"Aye, sir!" the various officers on the bridge responded simultaneously. Elron had had enough. He was through playing games and he was through walking Starfleet regulations like a tightrope. He was going to clear up this matter, put the Narojab culture back on its natural course and get his people back aboard the Tulip. Unfortunately, that was not as easy at it sounded. He couldn't justify forcibly removing Takud and his men; that could cause more damage to the Narojabs than simply doing nothing. All he could do was help educate the Narojabs and let them come to their own conclusions. He could take Tobias into custody though, he had jurisdiction enough for that.
As soon as the Tulip had achieved orbit, Elron stood up. "Bema, you have the bridge. I'm going down to pay our guests a visit." One short turbolift journey later and the Admiral was on Deck 12. Scorch marks on the walls indicated where particularly heavy resistance had been met. Two of the invaders lay unconscious on the floor of a corridor, one security guard standing watch over them, but none of the Tulip's teams had suffered casualties. He rounded a corner and came across the main group of intruders, caged in a level-9 force field. A dozen marine and security officers stood nearby, phasers drawn, eyes peeled. Elron spotted J'Ka and walked over to him.

The Senior Marine stood to attention when he saw his CO approaching. "Captain on deck," he barked at his men, who immediately stood to attention also. "At ease, Marines," Elron ordered, suppressing a smile. "Have they said anything?" Lt J’Ka shook his head curtly. "We’re not even getting name, rank and serial number out of them," he replied with a scowl. The Admiral turned to face the captives. "What are you doing on my ship? We have done nothing to provoke you and yet you attack us. Why?"
The largest of the captive invaders stepped forward ever so slightly. "We know of your intentions to take this world from our control. We know that the mighty Federation" – he said this with more than a hint of sarcasm – "is looking to expand its borders once again. Tobias has told us all about you and your self-righteous oppression." Elron sighed despondently. "I rather think Tobias has embellished things for his own benefit. We’re not here to take control of this world; we are here to make sure that they remain free and independent to follow their natural course of development. Tobias Erin is not a man to be trusted; he’ll be your best friend for as long as it suits him and then turn on you once he’s got what he wanted."
"So you say…" the alien responded unimpressed, then turned away and stood in silence with his colleagues.
"You can’t leave them here," Elron said quietly, turning back to J’Ka. "Transport them down to the brig and make sure the ship is secured. If they say anything else of interest, contact me immediately." "Aye, sir," was the sharp reply.
Elron tapped his commbadge. "Elron to Sickbay." =/\= Go ahead, Elron =/\= the EMH replied cheerily. "Holli, I want you to prepare a full kit of medical supplies for the away team. They’ll need something to treat radiation poisoning and water contamination in particular." =/\= I can have something ready in just a few moments and send it straight down from here if you’d like? =/\= "Clear it with Ops first. Elron out."

Down on the planet's surface, Kenny had left his post and was helping the ship's Executive Officer, in the guise of a doctor from a neighbouring village, distribute basic medical treatment to those who needed it badly. This meant heading back to where the cartloads of ore had originated, as well as several sites where the poorly shielded replicator technology was located. Initial objections and enquiries into exactly which village they were from soon ceased once they saw the effects of the treatments. Kenny guessed that little contact had been had with any of the nearby villages since the outbreak of the "sickness". The idea of a concerned doctor travelling all the way out here to help them may have sounded like an unlikely one, but people will accept a surprising amount if it helps cure them of any pain or suffering. Barely half an hour before, while Kenny was still sitting on watch outside the large central domicile, fervent action had again erupted inside the room. As each of Takud's men shouted vainly into their communicators, Tobias had taken this opportunity to slip out. Kenny hadn't been able to see where he left the building, however, and so was unable to follow. Instead he found Disasterman, reported all that he had seen and followed the FO's order to assist. Being an anthropologist who specialised in pre-warp cultures, Kenny was more aware than most of the remarkable effects that could result from a simple combination of controversial rumours and disgruntled masses. Since he had arrived in the village, Lt Walker had heard several Narojabs quietly confiding to each other that they blamed the strangers for the appearance of the "sickness". "It all started just after they arrived," one of them had grumbled. "And you know we lost three more in the mines," the other had replied angrily. Not everyone seemed to be upset by the arrival of the aliens however, so for now these ruminations were being kept out of mainstream conversation. Perhaps this was largely due to the sense of fear and awe that Takud and Tobias had worked so hard to develop in them, a nagging thought that these visitors were god-like and could do you immeasurable harm if provoked. Kenny sensed that the influence of that was waning slowly though, and he decided to help it along. Next time he heard a similar conversation, he decided to chip in with some ideas of his own...

Bema breathed a sigh of relief after they had destroyed the transport. He looked at the time and smiled. Yes, my shift is finally over Bema thought as the turbolift doors opened and Lieutenant Pierce stepped out. "Sir I am here to relieve you," Pierce said with a smile. "Your timing couldn't be better Mr. Pierce. We are in sub-synchronous orbit of the planet, you have the bridge Lieutenant," Bema said as he stepped into the trubolift. OFF: If you don't mind, I think it'd be better for me to participate in the holodeck simulation once we're on our way back to Federation space. We really need to get this mission wrapped up and out of the way, but I'll be right there once that's done . Perhaps we can shift time slightly?ON: Eventually Disasterman and Kenny had successfully treated the village water supply and provided the worst affected villagers with basic medical care. Gary and Damion had located the remaining items of dangerous technology, protecting themselves from the harmful radiation as recommended by Lt J'Ka, and neutralised their effects. They also removed any components they thought might lead to the Narojabs trying to develop similar technology themselves. The away team then followed Kenny's suggestion and subtly encouraged the notion that the visiting aliens had brought this "sickness" down on everyone with their magic machines. "We never had any problems until they arrived," they said. "What gives them the right to abuse us and take our metals?" "What have their gifts actually brought us but pain and suffering?" "Why would Gods be so desperate for tribute that they force us to mine until we drop dead? What need have they for such things, if they are as powerful as they claim?" "They should be more reasonable in their demands. They show little gratitude for the affection we have shown them." The enthusiasm of the responses they received surprised even Kenny. Takud and his men, agitated by the news of their invasion squad's capture and the near effortless disabling of their ships, were now becoming aware of a change in the Narojabs. It was spreading through the village at remarkable speed, carried on the back of news that another mine shaft had collapsed in the East Quarter and 27 men were dead. "You! Bring us a cart so that we may return to our ship!" Takud yelled at a nearby Narojab aggressively. He didn't like what was going on and felt the need to be in a more secure location. The Narojab merely looked back disdainfully. "There is no cart here. You will have to walk." Then he looked away as if he didn't want to talk any more. Takud snarled and was about to confront the villager in anger when he heard one of his men say "Where is Tobias?" Takud spun round. Sure enough, Tobias Erin was nowhere to be seen. "This is his fault! He assured me the Federation ship would not be able to withstand his weapons. He said we would capture the ship and share in its spoils. This whole thing was his idea to begin with, now that I think about it!" Takud was beginning to work himself up into quite a rage. No one else dared speak. Back on the Tulip, in orbit around the planet, Bema was detecting a ship leaving orbit.

With his ship filled with the last few loads of dilithium, Tobias ran quickly through pre-flight. The second he had completed it, he took off, his shuttle rising out of the forest as quickly as he could convince it to. Damn those federation pigs, always coming along and ruining his plans. He would have only needed a few more months to reap full profit from this planet. On the other hand, they had forced him to keep on his toes, keep moving. He smiled slightly. He would have to get rid of this, he should still get a decent price. Then he would see where his money could get him a nice investment.
As his ship broke orbit a larger smile broke out on his face. He tapped a few buttons, and Elron’s face soon appeared on his HUD. “Admiral. I do apologise for the inconvenience I have caused you. On the other hand, I didn’t attempt to steal or sabotage your quantum reactor. It was tempting. But there would have been no way for me to do anything with it – yet. I’m sure we’ll meet again, and in the mean time, make sure you keep the ship in good shape for me huh?” Before Elron could have a chance to answer, the trill closed the link again and activated the phasing cloak.
On the bridge of the Black Tulip, Elron watched she ship shimmer out of view, his emotions somewhere between bemusement and anger. The trill mercenary meanwhile was rubbing his hands together.
Where to go?

Civil unrest had spread through the Narojab village. The working classes were upset about the exploitation of the miners and resulting deaths; the industrial magnates were upset about the large amount of resources they were paying for machines that caused their workforce to become sick; village leaders were upset because of the lack of respect shown to them by Takud and the rest of his henchmen. The benefits and teachings they had been promised were yet to be seen, while the Narojabs had been nothing but loyal and welcoming in return. There was only so long the arrangement could have continued without some form of appeasement, and the arrival of the USS Black Tulip had distracted Tobias and Takud from noticing the rapid declination of support for their presence. The apparent arrival of help from a neighbouring village merely cemented the belief that they were better off looking after themselves.
This was not going down well with Takud though. He had big plans for the dilithium from this planet and was not willing to give up on it easily. Even as the Narojabs were gathering, he was back at his ship retrieving what arms he could and preparing his men to take control of the village. He knew that the primitive Narojabs were no match for his advanced technology, even if their numbers were much greater. "We'll show them," he growled. "They can't hope to keep me from what should rightfully be ours."
As Kenny Walker rummaged through the rest of the supplies the Black Tulip had beamed down to them, he found something that the Admiral, in his infinite wisdom, had thought might come in handy: an EM inhibitor capable of disabling any electronic devices within a kilometre radius. "Commander," Kenny called to Disasterman, "I think we have a way of helping the Narojabs deal with their guests." He lifted up the inhibitor, about the size of a teacup. Disasterman grinned. It was just like Elron to think of everything. "Excellent! We need to find a concealed location where the Narojabs will be protected by its effects." "Will it prevent us communicating with the Tulip?" Disasterman shook his head. "We'll still be able to operate on subspace frequencies, so we won't lose contact with each other or the ship. The shuttle should be outside its influence, but would still be able to operate anyway."
They found a suitable site near the centre of the village and buried the device at the base of a tree. "It won't have maximum effectiveness from here, but it'll still do what we want." A sudden thought occurred to Kenny. "Sir, these people are on the brink of an industrial revolution. They shouldn't develop electronic technology for a century or more, but it's impossible to tell how quickly any individual society might advance, especially when they've seen what the Narojabs have seen. The inhibitor won't prevent their own technological advances, will it?" The XO smiled. "The power supply on that thing should last a few months at most. Not only should it be inactive long before the Narojabs develop electronics, it'll hopefully be dead by the time anyone here discovers it. If anyone tried to force the device open they'd destroy the internal circuitry beyond recognition." "It won't protect the Narojabs for long then?" "Long enough for them to deal with Takud on equal terms." "But what if another space-faring culture discovers the dilithium deposits and decides to pay the Narojabs a visit just like Takud?" "Then the Narojabs will just have to deal with it themselves as best they can. We can't shield them from the outside universe indefinitely." Kenny nodded acceptingly at Disasterman's answer.
No sooner had they activated the inhibitor than Takud arrived to meet the gathering Narojabs with his small posse, each armed with laser pistols and some other unrecognisible devices. "We're taking over this village now," Takud snarled through his teeth. "You'll continue to give us all the minerals we tell you to mine for and you'll do what we tell you, when we tell you." The response was not positive. "We're sick of taking orders from you!" one of the younger Narojabs shouted back. Takud pulled his finger on the trigger, then stood dumbstruck as nothing happened. He and his men vainly tried to activate every device at their disposal as the angry Narojabs advanced towards them.
"I think it's time we left," Disasterman said with quiet satisfaction. The rest of his team agreed, and they all began the short trek back to the shuttle.
Back in orbit on the Black Tulip, Elron was staring at the view screen. He'd just watched Tobias' ship shimmer away in defiant retreat. "No sign of the ship on sensors, sir. He's gone," Pendleton reported. Elron sighed. He wasn't surprised. If he was honest, he couldn't even claim to be that disappointed. What he felt was unease of one who had been foiled in a game of cat-and-mouse. What did concern Elron though was that Tobias knew about their QSD. He had a feeling this would not be the last time their paths would cross. "Once the away team is back on board, prepare to enter a new heading towards the Delta Quadrant border." "Admiral," Pendleton interjected, "during one of the battles we suffered damage to our quantum shielding matrix. We can get back to Federation space from our current location using the secondary systems, but I wouldn't recommend going any further." "We can't repair it ourselves, Lieutenant?" "I don't believe we're equipped to deal with this problem. We need a shipyard or starbase facility." Elron tapped the control panel by his side to review the detailed damage report. The Lieutenant was correct. "Very well. Bema, once the away team is back on board set course for Starbase Bellicose. Slipstream as usual." "Aye, sir." "And if I'm not mistaken, our shifts were due to end twenty minutes ago. Care to join me in the holodeck afterwards, Bema?" The CNO grinned. "I'll meet you there."
OOC: Well, that's it pretty much finished up folks ;D. Feel free to make further minor posts to wrap things up before I lock this thread. Anything unrelated to the mission should be posted on a new thread though.
