contrary to what yahoogroups said...we'll jump into a new mission straight off. Timeline'll be moved up 3 months to allow for extensive ship repairs.
I'll get the first post done Monday. In the mean time, put in your last responses to the joint mission, which will also be locked Monday and (after discussion with both Captain Torek and Captain Kirk) stored under Vesuvius mission archives.

Three months the USS Vesuvius had sat in drydock, undergoing extensive repairs. And extensive they were indeed; the cloaking device was badly damaged on the primary module, the tertiary module nacelles had nearly been sheared off and overall the small ship had taken quite a beating when her shields had been destroyed.
Sonak paced her office, almost like a caged animal. With the three months nearly up, she was aching to get back out into space again, but they still had to attend the hearing regarding the damage sustained and the actions taken. There were also still the matters of losing her first officer, Vander Halthor as well as her SMO, major Larok. She had learned, however that Larok had somehow turned up on the USS Majesty, but of Vander there was no trace whatsoever. "Reckus to Parsons, report to my office."
Time to make things official; despite his initial protests, he had backed her in her decisions after all, even though his objections had quite clearly been noted, along with everyone else who had objected. However, her actions had gotten them home and she also valued the support of Captain Torek. Along the way, she had made Doctor Tintagel the official chief medical officer and had officially assigned Apirana as security chief. She wasn't exactly sure where their loyalties lay, but Parsons had vouched for them, and to her, his word had been enough.
As soon as Parsons reported, she gestured him to a seat. "In a few minutes, the entire senior staff has a meeting with Fleet Admiral Elron, here in his courtroom on Starbase 47," she informed him, "there is however something I need to do first." She paused for a few seconds, giving Parsons the opportunity to speak freely. "I had offered you the position of first officer while we were marooned in the Andromeda galaxy. I believe it is time to make the assignment official, like I have officialised the positions of commanders Tintagel and Apirana. Commander Kirk spoke very highly of you and your performance as acting first officer of the late USS Scavenger. It is my belief you will continue to perform as such as my first officer."
The Vulcan woman watched him closely, then rose from her seat. "It is time." She tapped her combadge. "Attention senior staff, report to Fleet Admiral Elron's courtroom in ten minutes. You are required to appear in full dress." Of course this was a requirement, as they were meeting as a result of an official enquiry. Fortunately, she knew Elron very well and she knew that he was well aware of the fact that she wouldn't go against the Prime Directive unless there was little other choice to abandon it.
Ten minutes later, and wearing full dress uniform, the Vesuvius senior staff was allowed entry into Starbase 47's courtroom. "Admiral," the Vulcan woman greeted as she stepped forward. "We were summoned, and we have come as ordered."
Fleet Admiral Elron was sat behind the bench, browsing through information on his PADD. The Avari looked up when the Vesuvius party arrived and announced themselves. He rose from his seat and stepped away from the bench, not really wanting to make it too formal an endeavour. "Approach," he ordered solemnly.
Sonak had barely approached him when suddenly a bright orange beam shot right past her, striking the Avari admiral in the shoulder, spinning him around. She was close enough to him to feel the heat of the blast score past her cheek and she crouched in alarm. A second shot struck the admiral in his chest and he crumpled to the deck, unmoving.
"Illito!" Sonak called, for once trusting the Cardassian woman implicitly. "Apirana secure the room! Call base security." It was fortunate that none of them had arrived wearing arms, otherwise they would immediately be implicated. She rushed forward, not waiting for Illito to respond and knelt beside her friend.
His uniform was still smoking from the two phaser blasts, no doubt set to kill and there was a gaping burn on his chest and shoulder. "He is dead, "she reported, cradling the admiral's body while allowing the Cardassian doctor to confirm what she already knew.
"Commander Parsons, please make sure that the base command staff is informed that Fleet Admiral Elron, commanding officer of the USS Black Tulip and Chief Justice, has just been assassinated." She rose to her feet, her expression grim. "The question is, who killed Admiral Elron, and more importantly, why?"
OOC: And from here, we shall go investigating why. chatter on yahoogroups please, let's not spoil everyone's reading fun, shall we?

It had been a long three months, filled with repair reports and debriefings. Adam didn't like being on the other side of a JAG inquiry, but he expected it and cooperated fully. He was a little surprised the Commodore had asked him to stay on as Acting XO during this time, but he couldn't very well go back to his JAG assignment while this inquiry was pending.
Repairs were now nearing completion and the hearing on the inquiry was to be conducted by Fleet Admiral Elron. Parsons reported to Commodore Sonak's office before the hearing, as ordered.
Upon entering, the Commodore, gestured for Adam to take a seat. "In a few minutes, the entire senior staff has a meeting with Fleet Admiral Elron, here in his courtroom on Starbase 47," she informed him, "there is however something I need to do first." She paused for a few seconds, and Parsons looked back at the Vulcan officer.
Commander Parsons was a bit surprised by Commander Kirk's endorsement. He never really thought he had the respect of the icy, once Borg, officer. Adam had, however, considered Kirk invaluable on the Scavenger, both as Chief Engineer and as the ship's second officer.
"Thank you, Commodore. I will give you and the crew my best. It will be good to work with so many of my old comrades again."
Sonak rose from her seat. "It is time." She tapped her combadge and informed the rest of the crew to meet them in the courtroom.
Ten minutes later, and wearing full dress uniform, the Vesuvius senior staff was allowed entry into Starbase 47's courtroom. Sonak greeted the Admiral and announced the presence of the Vesuvius crew.
Fleet Admiral Elron sat behind the bench, glancing at his PADD. He looked up and stepped away from the bench. "Approach," he ordered solemnly.
Sonak had barely approached him when suddenly a bright orange beam shot right past her, striking the Avari admiral in the shoulder, spinning him around. The Commodore crouched just as a second shot struck the admiral in his chest and he crumpled to the deck, unmoving. Parsons, having watched in horror, spun around and ran to the door carefully peering out, but saw no one. Pai was right with him.
Sonak called out for Illito, and the Cardassian doctor rushed to the Admiral's side. "Apirana secure the room! Call base security." None of them had arrived wearing arms, and Parsons felt rather exposed tactically. He tapped his combadge, "Security to the Courtroom, priority one, intruder alert."
"He is dead," Adam couldn't believe his ears, the Admiral was a living legend, and to be killed in his courtroom on Starbase 47, with so many witnesses present was unthinkable.
"Commander Parsons, please make sure that the base command staff is informed that Fleet Admiral Elron, commanding officer of the USS Black Tulip and Chief Justice, has just been assassinated."
"Yes, Ma'am." Commander Parsons walked around behind the bench and sat down, sending the grim news via the Admiral's console.
Sonak rose to her feet, "The question is, who killed Admiral Elron, and more importantly, why?"
"Until we are cleared by station security, no one leaves this room," Parsons cautioned knowing the securing of the crime scene was paramount now.

"Well doesn't this just make the day all nice and rosy," Nick quipped to Sarah as he tucked in his shirt. She straightened his collar and smiled. He looked at himself in the mirror again, turning this way and that
"You look good," she said.
"I hate wearing this thing," he lamented, "it makes my butt look big."
She laughed at the comment and smacked his backside. He grabbed her around her waist and tickled her.
"You need to get going," she said with a kiss to the cheek.
"Mmm k," he looked dreamily at her again and she pushed him out the door.
~~~
He kept fiddling with his jacket the whole way to the courtroom. Why couldn't the person in charge of making uniforms make them comfortable. Maybe it was to make people like him stand up straight. He'd become accustomed to his engineers tunic, especially this last three months he'd been in a very relaxed jumpsuit while fixing the various areas of the ship.
"Welcome to The Justice Department of Section 47. Please take a seat," the welcome droid said as the made their way into the courtroom.
"Approach," Elron said softly, he looked rather troubled by the reports he'd been reading. The scream of a phaser ripped through the air and the admiral fell to the deck with a gaping hole in his chest. Nick spun to see where it'd come but no luck, the room was packed.
"Damn," he swore under his breath, "Too many people."
In seconds a heavily armed security detail beamed in effectively blocking the entrances to the room. The crow began to panic and grow restless. This was going to be an interesting day, he just hoped that the phaser in his boot wouldn't be found.
Paikea looked at the scene in front of him and knew that he had made the right decision in staying on the Vesuvius. It had been only three months ago that Paikea informed his commanding officer that she was an accessory to murder. He had made his feelings known which led them to this very moment. Fleet Admiral Elron had requested this meeting and Paikea was going to make sure to stick to his principles.
As the Vesuvius senior staff waited, Paikea made sure to stay as far away from Sonak Reckus as possible. Even though he had accepted her offer to stay on as CTSO, Pai did not like the Vulcan Commodore. He would never allow her to forget the people she condemmed to death, even though it got her crew back safely home. On the upside, Paikea once again was serving with Illito Tintagel, his dear friend of many years. They had gone through many hardships together and he was sure that they would be able to overcome this hardship as well.
"Approach"
Paikea was ready for what was to come, but everything was turned upside down when phaser fire erupted inside the courtroom. Before he could do anything, Paikea saw Fleet Admiral Elron fall to the ground dead.
"Apirana secure the room! Call base security."
"No one move!" Paikea bellowed throughout the courtroom which caused everyone to stop and stare at the commander," if you attempt to leave this courtroom you will be arrested immedaitely. Apirana to Security, shut the station down. Someone has assasinated Fleet Admiral Elron. No one leaves this station not even Section Admiral Nova."
"Commodore Reckus if we are to find out why this happened, we need to elimnate us as suspects," Paikea said as he approached the visibily shaken Vulcan flag officer.
Still shaken and cradling Elron's body to her, Sonak nodded. "I would be intrigued to hear your proposal on how to achieve that commander," she answered coldly, before releasing the Avari's body to her chief medical officer for autopsy. "I want to know what exactly killed him, what type of weapon," she ordered, as she rose to her feet.
She joined Parsons in the middle of the room, while watching - not without a hint of admiration - as Paikea secured the room. "Someone has to inform Admiral Nova," she offered, resting her hand on Parsons' arm. It surprised her that he didn't jerk his arm away immediately. "Take control of the situation here," she ordered as starbase security swept in.
She pointed at two officers. "You and you, take me to Admiral Nova." She wasn't going to inform him over the comm. Flanked by two security officers, both of whom had their weapons drawn though not quite trained on her, the Vulcan commodore left the JAG hall. She turned in the doorway. "Fox, Kirk, see if you can locate the assassin's location by extrapolating the weapon's trajectory. Find out where the assassin escaped to."
She turned back as security ushered her into a turbolift, taking her up to the command level. Sonak wasn't surprised to find Nova in his office, clearly busy with several reports. "I regret we have to meet again under less than ideal circumstances admiral," she offered in greeting. Her expression was haunted, though her gaze upon the human was as if made of steel. "There has been a murder on this starbase."
That seemed to get the admiral's attention as his head snapped up and his gaze met hers. She held his gaze, though she took a deep breath. "Fleet Admiral Elron was just assassinated," she reported sadly, "we had just arrived for our scheduled hearing when he was shot right before our very eyes. My security chief is co-ordinating with base security while my first officer has taken command of the situation."
Post by SA. Duke Nova [Ret] on Sept 17, 2008 1:27:17 GMT
As the Commodore took her breath Nova slowly arose from his chair without ever breaking eye contact with her. His chair made that vibrating squeak as the legs rubbed across his office floor. Duke’s expression was as cold and hard as stone but inside his thoughts were racing as to the identity of the person she was about to reveal. When the first two words out of her mouth were Fleet Admiral, everything kicked into slow motion and his body stiffened in shock of what was to come. Duke’s mind jumped to the horrible thought that she would say McCormick next however when he realized she said the name Elron, Nova was both relieved and deeply troubled by this.
“It is hard to believe that any common assassin could breach security on this starbase. Whoever we are dealing with here is bound to have friends and be quite dangerous” Nova said as he paced around his chair.
Nova rubbed his chin as he thought then he activated a device, hidden in his uniform, unknown to anyone in the room. Sonak and Nova continued to discuss the facts of the assassination as she remembered them.
The device was a call for help to someone Duke believed had the best chance of getting to the bottom of this murder investigation without having to deal with the red tape of Starfleet Regulations. At the very least Nova believed it would not hurt to have someone in the shadows watching over other possible targets.
Shortly after the Commodore and her escorts left Nova’s office a figure from the shadows of his changing room came up behind him and hit Duke with a hypo-spray. The figure placed a device on Nova’s body and it vanished in some sort of alien transporter beam.
The figure stood behind Nova’s desk with his back to the entrance of the office looking out of a view port. Nova’s aid suddenly entered Nova’s office and approached the figure.
“Admiral Nova there is someone here to see you” the aid informed him.
When the figure turned to answer and the light revealed the face of Admiral Nova with a very evil look upon it.
“Commander I do not wish to be disturbed right now. Send whoever it is away and get out of my office!” Nova ordered.
“Aye Sir” his aid replied as he gazed at Nova’s face and quickly left his office.
Sonak almost moved as if on auto-pilot, flanked by her escorts as she walked back down to the courtroom. It was only thanks to her security escort that she was let back in the room. She never noticed Jatan standing outside, looking worried nor did she notice the crowd gathering.
Still immersed with grief, she walked back in and gathered her crew. "Obviously, we are the prime suspects, therefor we have to eliminate motive and cause among ourselves first."
The Vulcan paused, meeting everyone's gaze. "Adam, I want you to assist Paikea in doing so. Illito, what have you found after examining Elron's body? Nick, obviously you are the one person to check for booby traps, set-ups and the like. Fox, assist him. Jonathan, I would like you to check who had access to this room over the past week. Who entered, who left. Who might have had a grudge against Elron."
She paused again. "I have just spoken with Admiral Nova. Suffice to say he looked angry. Then again, he is human. Any questions?"
~
An hour or so later, the Vulcan commodore stood alone in her office aboard the starbase, with the two security escorts on guard outside. She would soon be joined by her senior staff, she knew.
"After finally returning, or should I say limping back to Starbase 47...this is actually the first time we do dock here as our home port Bellicose seems to have disappeared...the Vesuvius had to undergo massive repairs. I am certain that our chief engineer, Nick Martens, had his hands full. It is surprising that he always turns up when I have need of him the most."
The Vulcan paused, gazing out the window of her office on SB47. As Alpha Squadron CO - here she mused that she was back on home port as well - she was entitled to an office. Space was enormous, and velvet black from her point of view. Naturally the counterlight from her office made space look blacker than it actually was.
"Since two vessels were nearly destroyed, and we interfered in the natural development of an alien species, we were told there would be a hearing in regards to this. Especially since I was the commander in charge of our small group of vessels, and I issued orders that normally would never have gotten out."
She sighed miserably. "When we got to the courtroom, we were met by Fleet Admiral Elron. It is odd, to meet him again under such circumstances, especially when I believed he was away with his own ship, the Black Tulip. He never got as far as getting up from his seat, as he was shot twice, right before our eyes. He died where he was shot, and now we have the task of investigating this murder, even when we ourselves are suspect as well. I have ordered Commander Apirana to question everyone."
She sipped her tea, grimacing at the tart taste. "I have of course reported the incident to Admiral Nova, who actually had the grace to look upset. I wonder how he feels under all of this, as the murder occurred on his station. No ship is to dock or depart at this moment, to prevent the assassin from getting away."
The Vulcan set the cup down hard, spilling the hot contents over her hands. She ignored the stinging it caused, her expression grim, her eyes flashing. "We will discover who did this," she vowed to herself.
It all happened to fast for Jonathan to really understand what had happened. He saw the phaser blast, and from the angle he knew that it had to have come from behind the assembled group of Vesuvius crewmembers. One question bothered him more than anything else, if Admiral Elron had seen his killer he would have reacted to the phaser being aimed at him. That fact alone absolved the Vesuvius crewmembers, but nobody was bringing up that point.
The security teams had all but detained the senior staff of the Vesuvius, COM badges had been removed to prevent escape via transporter, and a quick pat down checked for the possibility of a hidden weapon. To the security guards surprise no weapons were found, this of course did not shock any of the senior staff members.
"Fox, Kirk, see if you can locate the assassin's location by extrapolating the weapon's trajectory. Find out where the assassin escaped to."
“Yes ma’am.” Jonathan replied after being released.
The phaser did not shoot through Elron, so marking the exact spot of the shooter was nearly impossible, but they would get the general area, “We need to get the surveillance footage for the time index in which Admiral Elron had been killed.” Kirk said to one of the security guards.
“I’m afraid that is not going to be possible sir.”
“Why not?”
“That information is classified, and will be looked at by base security, not the Vesuvius.”
“We have the right to defend ourselves.” Jonathan spoke in an uncharacteristically angry tone.
“I’m sorry sir, but Admiral Nova is the only one who can override base security protocol.”
“Well let’s go speak to Admiral Nova then, come on Fox.” Jonathan said passing the security guard.
Nick began combing the room with a tri-corder looking for anything which might be of use to the investigation. Starbase security was more than helpful in providing the tri-corder, but less than helpful by assigning a goon to shadow him. An odd blip appeared on the display. He re-calibrated and focused on the blip.
"Odd," he muttered and started walking towards the Judges Bench. The assigned guard watched Nick intently as he slid on his back under Elrons bench. He shot back out as fast as he went in, a look of fear on his face. He waved for the guard to come over, which he did.
"Look at this Rick," Nick said pointing under the desk. Rick bent over and looked where the Vesuvius engineer was pointing. His eyes widened and he looked back at Nick.
"So are we the culprits or are you ready to accept that there's something bigger going on?" Nick said bluntly. Rick nodded and tapped his badge.
"Sir, we have an issue in the court room."
=/\=What is it Mathews?=/\=
"I need a bomb squad down here asap. Commander Martens found something."
Nick lay back down an began looking over the device. A wire led away from the device so he began to trace it with his fingers. It led to the back of the room, literally all the way around the room from the large desk where the Admiral had been seated. On the end of the wire, tucked under the baseboard was a detonator.
"Genius," he muttered. He flagged Rick over, who in turn motioned for the newly arrived bomb squad to come over.
~~later~~
Nick stepped into Commodore Sonaks office. It was a much larger room than the one she had on Vesuvius, but this was a starbase and they tended to have room to spare. Sonak was seated in her chair gazing out the window at the planet below the station.
"Any news Commander?" she asked without looking up at him.
"Well, this has gotten a whole lot more complicated," he said.
"Oh?" that peaked her interest, he could tell as one of her eyebrows raised.
"There was more than one person involved. If they shooter were to fail there was a backup." He let that sink in and watched her face closely in the window reflection.
"I found a small explosive device attached to Elrons desk. It was a hardwire system which meant there was someone holding the trigger at the other end of the wire. It would have taken him and the Prosecution and Defence personnel out. They'd push the button and BOOM no more Elron. Internal sensors wouldn't have picked up any transmission because there wouldn't have been one. But that's not what's troubling me," he said softly, he looked at his boots for a moment.
Sonak turned in her chair and looked at her friend, his face was full of worry.
"What bothers you so?" She asked.
"Well put it this way, what I just described wasn't a backup plan. The plan seemed that it was to take out not just Elron, but the JAG and our Sr. Officers. The detonator was pushed but due to the wire system a fault in the line stopped the signal."
He looked up at her as the news sunk in.
"If it weren't for that break we'd be residue on the floor."
The security teams went about their business and the Vesuvius senior staff were being interviewed by the station's investigators in different parts of the large courtroom. Eventually the Commodore returned. She ordered Parsons to assist Pai with eliminating the crew as suspects. Eliminating motive would be difficult. They had one. They were about to face judgment for their actions during the last mission.
Pai and Adam began their collateral investigation while working with the station's security officers. The senior staff were to rally in the Commodore's office to report their progress.
* * *
Parsons arrived with Pai at the Commodore's office after interviewing the Vesuvuis crew. Each of the officers had a starbase security officer escorting them.
As Adam entered the office with Apriana, he noticed Commander Martens already present. "Commodore, Nick," Parsons said to the two officers, ignoring all of the escorts which were asked to wait outside by the Commodore.
"Commander Apirana and I have now interviewed each of the crew. Every member of the senior staff was seen by at least one other member when the shots were fired. For our purposes, we have been exhonerated, however, I'm not sure starbase security will see it that way. There is still the possibility from their perspective of a conspiracy among two or more Vesuvius officers."
The Vulcan held her breath, her expression becoming almost stony as she regarded her chief engineer. "Was Elron the target?" she asked, "or was it us?"
She had sat down just as Parsons and Apirana entered her office and she listened intently to their report. "You have questioned all but two," she answered her first officer, "and I agree with your theory." She paused. "It is too convenient for us to be here, just as the admiral is assassinated, therefor it is logical for security to presume that we have part of this."
Sonak gestured to the vacant seats. "I do know we have an alibi, as we have only just arrived here a few hours ago. We never had time to set all this up. However, we must find evidence and soon. There may be those that wish to frame us, as over the last years the Vesuvius and her crew have made quite a few enemies."
She paused again, sipping her now cold tea. "Personally, I do not know what motive I would have and what would I gain by his death? He is my daughter's godfather, and my friend." The Vulcan sat up a little straighter, pulling her face into a neutral expression once more after tears threatening to get formed. "As your questions commanders. Nick, you can either verify or deny my words and I expect you to answer truthfully as well."
Sonak set her cup aside and folded her fingers before her. "I do know that Admiral Nova is most displeased with current situation and will get to the bottom of it to get it solved."
Illito had been allowed communication with someone off-base if she allowed the conversation to be monitored. She hadn't even been told yet who was contacting her, but she figured she didn't have anything to say that was confidential.
When the screen revealed her brother, Illito just blinked at him for a few seconds, her brain not coming up with any words to say. "Illito," he started, when it became clear she wasn't going to. "You look well."
"Not really." Illito grimly forced a smile. "This isn't a great time for me."
"I'm sorry," Cido said, but he didn't move to close the comm channel. When Illito did, he held up a hand. "Wait, please."
Illito shrugged, but withdrew her hand. "What is it?"
"Sharne's pregnant."
"Congratulations," Illito said carefully.
"And I was thinking," Cido suddenly found the controls fascinating, as he started to stare at them, "That you might like to come home in time for the birth."
"How far along is she?" Illito asked, realizing after she asked the question that it wasn't much help when she didn't know what species Sharne was, apart from not Cardassian.
"She probably has another month to go. But we'd both like you around earlier if possible. Surely you have some leave coming?" Before giving her a chance to answer that question, though, Cido continued. "I tried to contact you for a while, and the people in Starfleet said they'd forward the message along to you-"
"Yeah, I never got it," Illito said. "And, listen, Cido, I'd love to come but I-"
"Can't be bothered," Cido said.
"That's not true," Illito said.
Cido shrugged, not wanting to argue the issue. "Look, I want my children to meet their aunt, but if you genuinely can't get away just now, that's fine. I can understand duty."
Illito paused, considering, well, everything. "I'll try to come when I can," she promised.
"Thank you," Cido said.
"It might be a little while, but there are circumstances beyond my control."
Cido nodded at her. "I appreciate it." The channel closed, and Illito wondered for a second when she'd placed her career in Starfleet so much above her family that her brother had to directly appeal to Cardassian values before she agreed to visit him.
The Vulcan regarded the three men that stood or sat with her in her office aboard Starbase 47. Neither man had said anything after she had encouraged the security chief, Commander Apirana, to question both herself and Nick Martens.
She glanced back at Nick, who was sat across her desk, not having moved since Parsons and Apirana had walked in. She studied her officers, trying to discern from their expressions what they were feeling. As a medically trained officer, as well as being a Vulcan with high ESP, she generally was a good judge of people. Generally, when her own feelings weren't in turmoil. It had been hours since she had caught any sleep or had any food. The tea, which still sat on her desk had grown cold minutes ago and she hadn't touched the tray of cookies that sat beside it.
"Well?" she finally asked, after an extremely long silence. "Paikea, please take Nick into the anteroom, you may question him there. There are a few things I need to discuss with Adam." Seeing the shocked look on the officer's face, she realised for the first time that she had started calling her senior staff by their first name.
Once the Human and the Tandaran were gone, the Vulcan turned to her first officer. "I have spoken with Admiral Nova," she informed him, "and from what I could tell, he was bordering on fury. Elron was one of his most trusted admirals and on a personal note one of my closest friends." She almost felt as though she were telling him something very personal, which in some way of course it was. "The admiral was my youngest daughter's godfather," she told him, her voice choking up as she struggled to maintain her composure.
She sank down on the couch, motioning for Parsons to take a seat as well. "I want to get to the bottom of this Adam," she told him, "I am not going to leave any stones unturned. We shall find who murdered him in cold blood! Whoever killed him, will spend the rest of his life in Rura Penthe, I shall see to it!"
(adam, any chance you can calm your CO down a little?)
With their escorts in tow both Fox and Jonathan walked the length to the Section Admiral’s office. Before entering Jonathan felt himself take in a deep breath, as if to ease his nerves. Fox noticed and gave the former drone a curious look. Jonathan had to admit that it was more than a little intimidating to be walking into the Section Admiral’s office nearly unannounced.
“Ready?” Fox asked.
“Yes.” Jonathan replied without expression.
The doors slide open and both Jonathan and Fox were greeted by a young, junior officer nearly at the door. The young aid held data PADs in her hands but was more concerned with the unexpected visitors.
“We are here-” Jonathan started.
“The Admiral is not seeing anybody at this time.”
“I think you do not understand-”
“No, I don’t think you understand Commander. The Admiral has given specific orders that he is not to be disturbed right now.” Her fierce tone caught the Chief Operations officer off guard.
“Perhaps we’ll come back later,” Fox said pulling on Jonathan’s tunic, “Please inform Admiral Nova that we want to see him as soon as possible.”
“I will.” Replied the young aid.
Both officers walked out of the Admiral’s office, “Why did you do that?” Jonathan asked.
“We were getting nowhere with her, and I’m sure you can think of a better way to get that video evidence.” Fox looked over his shoulder and to his surprise their guards had given the enough room to talk quietly.
“Not legally.” Jonathan replied.
“Well who said the Commodore asked us to find evidence? If my memory serves me right she asked us to find where the shots were fired from and how the shooter escaped.”
“Correct.” Jonathan said casually.
“Then lets do that.” Fox said.
Jonathan stood for a moment pondering Fox’s logic, and after a brief moment he could not help but agree. There was a way to gain access to those video clips, but both officers knew it was going to be tough not getting caught while at the same time losing their “escorts”.
Paikea Apirana looked at the Vulcan and Tandaran officers in front of him. They had served together for a little bit more than three months now and Paikea still had a hard time trusting his commanding officer. Even with his distrust of Commodore Reckus, he knew that she had nothing to do with the assisination of Fleet Admiral Elron. It didn't matter what he personally believed, Section Admiral Nova had given him a direct order and that was to find the person or persons responible for Elron's death.
"Commander will you please join me?" Paikea said as he turned his attention to the Chief Engineer," we need to talk about what happened."
After the Nick and Pai retired to the anteroom, the Vulcan turned to her first officer. "I have spoken with Admiral Nova," she informed him, "and from what I could tell, he was bordering on fury. Elron was one of his most trusted admirals and on a personal note one of my closest friends. The admiral was my youngest daughter's godfather," she told him, her voice choking up as she struggled to maintain her composure.
The Commodore sank down on the couch, and motioning for Parsons to take a seat as well. "I want to get to the bottom of this Adam," she told him, "I am not going to leave any stones unturned. We shall find who murdered him in cold blood! Whoever killed him, will spend the rest of his life in Rura Penthe, I shall see to it!"
"We are doing everything we can Commodore, but without access the station's security logs, we may be out of leads. If I didn't have these damn escorts trailing us, I think we could get a look at them," Parsons said with the security officers outside in the corridor.
"Then perhaps we should find a way to distract their focus from you," Sonak suggested, more calm now as she studied her first officer. "I have an idea but I need your permission for this. I am going to attack you in a few seconds to a minute, so that security will have their focus on me. You will slip away and obtain the records."
She glanced towards the anteroom. "No doubt Paikea will have his own thoughs on this, but he will learn it was a ruse. Are you in agreement?"
"If we could find a way to distract just one of the escorts following our officers, we could get a look at the surveillance and possibly break something loose in our investigation." Unbeknown to Parsons, Fox and Kirk were thinking the same thing as they walked away from Admiral Nova's office without so much as a meeting.
The moment he finished speaking, Sonak physically lashed out at him. She didn't hurt him but the surprise of the sudden attack sent him staggering. "Do not dare suggest that again commander," she snapped at him, raising her voice as she lashed out again, "I have not killed the admiral, and I shall not listen to your slander any longer!"
"Commander for the record can you please state your name, rank, age, and reason for being here on Starbase 47," Paikea asked fully aware how stupid these questions were. Even though he felt these questions were a waste of time, he was going to perform these investigation to the letter of the law.
(Tag Nick)
"Commander, what were you doing when Fleet Admiral Elron was shot?" Paikea asked as he placed his padd on the table in front of both men. Paikea knew full well that Nick Martens was a telepath and it would be hard for him to block his thoughts and emotions from the trained Tandaran officer.
(Tag Nick)
"Commander what were you thinking when you saw that Fleet Admiral Elron had been shot?" Paikea asked now visibily sweating from the mental shield that he had set up against Commander Marten's mind.
(Tag Nick)
"Commander did you kill Fleet Admiral Elron?" Paikea asked knowing that Commander Martens was not expecting that question.
The (fake) Nova paced back and forth in his office and he knew that the only way to confuse the facts was to manufacturer other facts to throw into the mix. Nova would set starbase security against those of the USS Vesuvius and to sweeten the pot he would throw Nova’s uncle Drake in to confuse them all. No one could ever know that the true targets were the senior staff of the Vesuvius and the (fake) Elron died to cover his failure to eliminate them. Ever member of the Vesuvius crew was being watched by associates of the (fake) Nova and his family of assassins.
“I would have given my entire payment to have been the trigger man taking that fool (fake) Elron out” Nova thought. “Now I must set in motion all the obstacles needed to fool Starfleet security.”
Nova has his aid set up meetings with all those involved in the investigation but not all together to be sure. Nova needed to plant the seed of doubt into each group that he talked to. Before it was all over Nova planned to have everyone suspecting everybody else until no body could ever learn the truth.
It didn't take long for the two guards that were on watch outside her office to come storming in and Sonak stepped back from her stunned first officer, her hands raised. She could tell the guards were on edge and she didn't want to risk being unnecessarily stunned. The Vulcan remembered only too well what a stun felt like; she'd been the recipient of several settings of stun at several occasions in her years-long career in Starfleet.
As security approached her and moved in to restrain her, their attention as successfully diverted from Commander Parsons, who slipped out at the earliest opportunity. From the anteroom, Paikea Apirana also appeared, looking less than pleased.
"The commander insulted me," Sonak spoke gravely, keeping the guards' attention solely on her, wondering whether Paikea had noticed Parsons' disappearance. "Are you finished with my chief engineer commander? He has an investigation to return to, as have I so I would appreciate it if you would get a move on with your interrogation." Further ignoring her guards, she moved to her seat behind the desk and sat down stiffly, casting her security chief both an expecting as well as daring look.
"I demand to speak with Admiral Nova," she spoke, before Paikea could even utter his first question. She wanted, no needed him to get worked up, knowing that he would want to get to the bottom of things, as Humans tended to put it. "You will see to it that he is brought to this room," she further challenged her guards.
"And I want a situation update from Commander Kirk as well, see to it that he is brought here as well. In an hour, I want a senior staff meeting in the conference room, with the admiral present as well. Gather as many of the starbase senior staff as is possible or advisable. I am certain the admiral would appreciate a full report, instead of receiving information bit by bit. Understood?"
At that precise moment, a familiar person walked in, though she saw he was wearing a different uniform altogether. "Commander Halthor!" This time, she positively smiled as she rose to her feet and held out her hand towards the Andorian. "Or should I say Lieutenant Colonel...I see you switched sides to join the marine corps. It suits you colonel. Please, have a seat."
Within minutes, she had briefed her former first officer and chief engineer. "We are suspect of this murder," she finished, "even though I know for certain that none of my crew have anything to do with this. We only just got here after our adventure in the Andromeda Galaxy, from which you had suddenly disappeared as well. Can you tell me how and why?" She wouldn't press if he couldn't, but she admitted she was curious.
"Have you come to offer your services once more?" she finally asked, hoping the answer would be positive. If anything, she could use a friendly face right now and she trusted the Andorian as much as she did her chief engineer. She considered him, again what Humans called, an old friend.
(pai/adam/ everyone! where are you?)
Star date 2394.1009
Taking off his old uniform with the commander 1st class pips laid firmly inside his rank case next to his bed, he took a moment to grab the next set of rank and look it over. Opening it up, looking inside it appeared to be that of his replacement rank, Marine Lt Col 1st Class, a star dust surrounded by yellow wings, taking it out, the Andorian placed the rank on his bed, then walked over to his marine uniform and laid the uniform and rank side by side.
With careful anticipation, he took the rank that lay beside, and placed it on the right collar, then gripping the uniform Halthor wanted to look at it in the mirror to see that both rank and collar were adjusted. Seeing that he had done just what he wanted, the Andorian quickly got into his marine uniform, and wore his new rank with pride, and knew that his new assignment aboard the Vesuvius would treat him well.
Looking around his quarters, Halthor grabbed his notepad that lay on the side of the bed, taking the moment to read his orders, the Andorian's tendrils began to sway from side to side as he began to review the findings with his blue eyes.
[Yellow]Starfleet Order: 7569843.234553
Effective immediately, You are hereby given the rank of Marine Lt Col 1st Class, and given the position Senior Marine Officer. Your previous position and rank are taken and transferred to the authority aboard this vessel, congratulations on your new assignment.
Respectly,
Starfleet Command
Understanding, Halthor took the padd with him then walked out his quarters, walking towards the turbolift. As it made its way towards the anteroom he watched as the counter proceeded through the decks.
Stepping out, Halthor walked into the anteroom in the hopes to meet with familiar crew and go over the mission briefing. As the doors slid open he saw sonak.
[Limegreen] At that precise moment, a familiar person walked in, though she saw he was wearing a different uniform altogether. "Commander Halthor!" This time, she positively smiled as she rose to her feet and held out her hand towards the Andorian. "Or should I say Lieutenant Colonel...I see you switched sides to join the marine corps. “Thank you Commodore, I will do just that, glad to be here with you, my services here, on top of being a marine and performing myself exceptionally are one and many, I will do my best to work with everyone and will make you proud.” Halthor replied then taking a seat.
The security guards outside rushed into the Commodore's office and the Vulcan took a step back and raised her hands. While the officers were attempting to take her into custody, the still somewhat stunned Parsons slipped out the door and headed down the corridor, his communicator still sitting on the Commodore's couch.
Once Adam had dodged around a few corners and down several hallways, he accessed a wall panel. "Computer, locate Commander Kirk," the Vesuvius XO ordered.
With Jonathan's location known, Parsons made his way to sickbay, where he picked up a hypo and sedative, then he checked Kirk's location once again and proceeded there.
Kirk and Fox were walking down the corridor when they suddenly heard a dull thud behind them. The two officers turned to see a slumped security officer on the floor, and another struggling with Commander Parsons.
"A little help, Adam said trying to inject his next victim." Kirk struck the security crewman in the back, allowing Parsons to sedate him. "Thank you, Commander," Parsons said dragging one of the security guards into an empty room off of the hallway. "Well, are you going to give me a hand or not," Adam said motioning to the other guard.
"We have orders from the Commodore to get that surveillance evidence from the Admiral's assassination ... by extraordinary means if necessary."
She wouldn't press if he couldn't, but she admitted she was curious. [/limegreen]
“Can I tell you how and why, what exactly?, I disappeared into the fabric of space and time itself, I would think that some entity had something to do with it, I remember before going into a spacial distortion and appearing on the Vesuvius in a different time, I was interacting with a time travel being all together it is against the prime directive to do so, and I know the rules and my actions, but as I see it, I was analyzing the project of the specimen as it was making its way through the decks of the Vesuvius before it made it way around, to make a plunge into the surface deck of one of our engineering departments, before I knew it I was left unconscious and then I woke up to find myself disorientated, with a mild headache.” Halthor replied.
“I wouldn't want a repeat of the situation as I described it, but I was clearly trying to find out what this alien entity was doing aboard the Vesuvius at the time before temporal shift. And that brings us before where I am now, why I had been suddenly brought back through time, who knows, maybe there was another alternative to the time travel being, but all I know was that I was in a different time and I was with different people of another time frame, but on the same ship.” Halthor motioned then stood up hoping his remarks suited well with the commodore.
Satisfied that she'd been able to elude starbase security and had also enabled her first officer to slip away, Sonak settled in the seat behind the desk, resting her hands on the top. For a moment, she looked utterly relaxed but anyone who knew her could see she was in fact highly agitated.
The Vulcan commodore listened as her former first officer related what had happened since his disappearance from the Vesuvius, while they'd been stranded in the Andromeda Galaxy.
“I wouldn't want a repeat of the situation as I described it, but I was clearly trying to find out what this alien entity was doing aboard the Vesuvius at the time before temporal shift. And that brings us before where I am now, why I had been suddenly brought back through time, who knows, maybe there was another alternative to the time travel being, but all I know was that I was in a different time and I was with different people of another time frame, but on the same ship.”
"Perhaps you were sent just in time to help us in this investigation," the Vulcan answered as she motioned for the Andorian marine to take a seat. She glanced up at Paikea and Nick, who stood a little to the side. She could see that Nick was equally agitated and even furious, and Paikea looked on the verge of losing his patience as well. "Calm yourself Commander Apirana," she ordered, "I may have some help for you. Colonel Halthor, I would like you to meet my security chief, Commander Paikea Apirana. He is helping base security in this investigation, although I am quite certain he is also investigating our innocense."
Sonak cast the human security chief a pointed look, though her attention was on the Tandaran chief engineer. "I am certain that Commander Martens is now free to pursue any leads he had on he explosive?" ~you are free to do so, as far as I am concerned~ she let the engineer know, as she looked straight at him. It was fortunate that she could communicate telepathically with him, especially since he was a telepath with reasonable powers of his own.
"Mr Martens found an explosive that failed to detonate," she explained to her new marine officer, "and he was investigating why it did not detonate. Mr Apirana was ordered to interrogate him, as well as he should have and I believe it is now my turn?"
Sonak rose to her feet, patted Vander on his shoulder than walked forwards to stand beside Apirana. "Mr Martens, please return to your duties in regards to the investigation. You should join Commanders Fox and Kirk, I believe they were on their way to see Admiral Nova. Mr Halthor, please remain and assist Mr Apirana. In an hour, we have a staff briefing and I want results!"
She tapped her combadge, knowing that despite two of her senior staff were on their way to meet him, Nova'd want to be kept up to date in person. "Admiral Nova, could you meet with me in my office as soon as possible?"
"We have orders from the Commodore to get that surveillance evidence from the Admiral's assassination ... by extraordinary means if necessary."
“Way ahead of you Commander.” Fox said as he pulled his COM badge from his chest, Kirk followed suit and motioned for Parson to do the same.
“We have a plan,” Jonathan said before kneeling down to the unconscious security guard. Unzipping the man’s duty tunic he placed his COM badge under the loose section of his undershirt. It was fortunate for him that most male officers preferred to wear their uniforms baggier than females, other wise the foreign COM badge would be felt instantaneously, “Place your COM badges on those two guards.” Kirk instructed.
Fox, Parson, and Kirk each dragged the sedated security guards into a nearby conference room, placing each guard into their own seat before leaving for the hallway.
Out in the hallway Kirk opened a side panel and procured three tricorders, He handed the tricorder to each of the officer after flipping them open, “Program the internal radios to my tricroder’s frequency.”
It took but a moment for the three officers to sync their tricorders, “This will give us a private radio link so we can communicate,” Kirk said turning to a wall diagram of the station, “We are here and our objectives are here, here, and here.” He pointed to the locations of the main, and two separate back up computers for the station, “We must each access these Jeffery Tubes and download the surveillance footage for our hearing with Admiral Elron. If we are successful we should all procure the evidence we need to clear our names. If one of us is caught in the act there are still two others that will complete our mission. Any questions?” Kirk asked knowing that the commanding authority he was presenting was a little out of line given the fact that their First Officer was present.
