Giga awoke to find himself in a palely lit room. He was strapped to an upright surgical table. He looked down and saw that his legs and one of his arms had been removed, he assumed due top the plasma destruction. With his free arm he touched the back of his head and felt a wire coming from the back. He obviously could not keep his power online without help at the moment.
All the memories had returned and with them the understanding that he had completed his mission. Was this relief he was feeling?
"So you are awake then?" A voice asked.
Giga looked up and saw Commandent Dowding. His companion from Earth.
"Yes." Giga replied. "His voice still a little croaky. "I appear to be on the way to functioning within normal parameters.
The Commandent chuckled. "That was a brave thing you did there Giga." He said.
"I do not feel emotions such as fear so I could not of been brave. I merely followed my duty as a Starfleet officer." Giga replied.
Commandent Dowding sighed. "You were willing to sacrifice yourself for this ship and crew. There is emotion behind that whether you can see it or not."
Giga looked puzzled. "I am not capable..." He started.
"Yes, Yes I know." Dowding interupted. He chuckled again. "I have missed you."
Giga frowned. "Missed me? I am an Android, surely there were more suitable subjects for company."
"Mayb, maybe." Dowding started. "But what you are yet to understand is that just because something is technically better it doesnt mean it actually is better."
"I do not understand." Giga said.
"I know, I know friend." He sighed deeply. "Ah yes, I almost forgot. My son Luke on the Tiger Shark sends his regards and is looking forward to meeting you. Unfortunately he won't be able to attend your graduation because he is currently on a mission but he says that at some point in the near future he would like to meet you."
Giga frowned harder. "Why?" He asked.
"Because maybe evrything isnt as logical as you think it is. Maybe he would like to meet you to become friends not for a particular purpose or job."
"This is..." Giga started.
"Let us not get into this." Commandent Dowding said. "It will end up in a situation where both of us think we are right." He cleared his throat. "We are currently on route to Starbase Conquerer, where you will have your Graduation ceremony and then recieve your assignment."
Giga looked to the doors as they opened and saw an Engineering technician walk in. He followed the technicians movvements as he began to fix the Androids limbs back on.
"Commandent." Giga said.
"Yes Giga."
"Can you tell me what happened to the boarding parties?"
"They just dissapeared." Dowding said. "According to Commander O'Connor as soon as Warp came back online they simply vanished."
"Intrigueing." Giga said quietly.
The Technician stood up. "There you go Cadet." He said whilst taking out the power supply from the back of Giga's head. "Good as new."
He released the straps and Giga stood up. "Everything is working in exceptional parameters." He said.
"Good good." Dowding said. "Well I will be seeing you shortly Giga. I must send a report to the Institute of Cybernetics on Earth but I will meet you later."
Giga nodded and allowed the Commandent to leave but just as Dowding was through the doors he called him back.
"Why did you come to the Hepta?" Giga asked.
"To check if you were alright of course." Dowding replied.
"How? Why?" Giga paused. "What do I mean to you?" He finished.
The Commandent brushed down his temporary uniform. He only had the rank of Commandent whilst he was workign woth Giga. Starfleet had given him the honourary rank for that time only.
"I came Giga." He said. "Because I have grown fond of you." And then left the room.
Giga stood in the middle of the room puzzled. "Fond?" He whispered.
He left the tech-lab and headed for the Bridge. He may as well report ot duty. He arrived on the Bridge and looked around. There were obvious signs of damage that Giga knew had partly been caused by him - was this guilt?
"Cadet Giga, reporting in Sir." Giga said.
Many faces turned to look at the Android and mahy gasped at the patches of his face where his artificial skin had been burnt off.
"I am ready to return to duty." He said.
