Hi guys Next mission is starting soon (as soon as those who won't be here make their excuses to leave Here's a taster of what's in store: With most repairs done on the USS Vesuvius-A, the crew need a chance to test it before going to far out into space. While on the way to SBB to have the refit finished, they will be passing an area of space that hasn't been properly charted in a long time. Several Cadet ships have tried to start it, but things have always gone wrong. With their bad luck, can the crew get the mission completed successfully AND make it all the way to SBB?

"You know I think these cookies are actually better than the ones back on Bellicose."
L'Ola gave a look of mock shock and disgust, "How could you say such a thing? I mean, okay it's true, but still. What of loyalty and friendship?"
Jenna shrugged, "What of them? In case you haven't remembered, I live on Earth now."
"Oh yeah."
The two of them fell silent for a moment. It had been weird having so long to catch up. Jenna had delayed her return home so that she could spend more time with her old crewmates.
The silence was broken by a PADD being dropped on the table. Lt Sam Joughin spoke up, "Sorry to interrupt you Sir, but this is the report from Engineering. Commander O'Malley says we should be ready to head for Bellicose within a few hours."
L'Ola smiled, "Thanks Lieutenant. That's good to hear."
Everyone had reported in to their stations, and the ship was finally ready to leave.
"Ensign Maverick, take us out. We're heading for the Balla Cluster."
Once they had started off, L'Ola turned to Fox, her newly appointed acting First Officer, "Commander, check in with all the departments to see how they're doing. See if we can organise a senior staff briefing some time soon."
Sitting back in her chair she let out a small sigh of relief. At least they had a ship to fly.
<everyone, sorry I haven't had chance to give you all individual tags. I'm sure you'll all find a way to write yourselves in...>

OOC: Partly before, partly after L'Ola's post
Just before everyone was called to report back to the Vesuvius Fox was called to report to the readyroom. Only this time it wasn't Sonak who he found there. L'Ola was sitting at the desk and motioned him to sit down in the chair. After Fox sat down she told him he was appoited as acting First Officer on this mission. He smiled at her and nodded. "I'll do my best Ma'am." he replied after which they continued to discuss the mission for a bit.
When he walked back onto the bridge he look at the chair next to the captains chair. Old memories from years ago came back, when he was promoted to First Officer of USS Thundercloud. In the mean time L'Ola had walked on the bridge and sat in her chair. Ordering Trey to take off.
This made Fox snap back to reality and he sat down in his chair. After they had left the starbase L'Ola turned to Fox.
Fox nodded "Aye Ma'am" he replied and tabbed some on his console, sending a message to all department heads that he wanted a status report at 1700 hours. After that he sat back in his chair, looking at the main screen that showed stars again after they'd left the starbase.

[Medlab, USS Vesuvius, at departure]
Jere had spent his shore leave getting to know the ship. He was busy sorting supplies and making sure that the lab and sickbay were ready for whatever faced them.
He looked up from the PADD containing the manifest and mentally counted the containers on the shelf before him. “All there.” he whispered to himself, before moving to the next shelf and repeating the procedure.
His job was all he had, it was all he needed. People tended to disappoint him more often than not, the last months an indication that maybe he should just remain by himself and not bother trying to get close to anyone.
The medic who was working with him looked up as he spoke. “What did you say?” he asked.
Jere chuckled. “Just talking to myself Mike. Making sure all the supplies are here is all.” he said motioning to the shelves before him.
The two had become fast friends, both new to the ship and both wanting to do their best. They’d spent some of shoreleave on the holodeck or walking the ship, learning the fastest routes from ‘A’ to ‘B’ and so on.
“What are you doing after shift?” Mike asked as he pulled more supplies from a nearby crate and putting them away on the shelves.
“Nothing much, was thinking of going sailing on the holodeck.” Jere replied.
The two continued to chat as they worked, finally agreeing on meeting after their shift was over for a holodeck adventure.

Jason Carter sat throwing something between his hands as he reread the mission brief for the hundredth time. He was actually starting to get uptight about keeping the department running. This wasn't normal. What was next? Stress? If that happened he'd definitely get is head checked out in sickbay.
A beeping alert showed just how much more work he'd been doing. The message reminded him that he still hadn't greeted the ship's new assistant CMO. Interdepartmental relations were very important to him, and he'd managed to maintain a good relationship with all other assistants. Well except James Wilson when he'd been aCTSO of course...
Sighing, Jason instructed the alert to snooze yet again. It would just have to wait until after the meeting.
L'Ola walked into the briefing room slightly earlier than planned. She'd got to the end of something and decided that it wasn't worth starting on anything new.
"Good afternoon, Sir" a voice said from across the room.
She smiled a forced smile as she went to her seat. "Good to see you here so early. I..." she nearly lost her confidence, but managed to start again, "I was actually going to ask you something..."
Jared looked a little surprised, "What's that?"
"Have-you-heard-from-Lucy-lately?" the words nearly melded together they were forced out so quickly.
"Should I have done?" a puzzled look had replaced the surprise.
She was just about to respond when the door opened and other senior officers started to appear. "Can I talk to you later?" she whispered over, before turning to face everyone else with a slightly-less-forced smile on her face.

Jared had spent most the time since Vesuvius has arrived in the dock either reading through the Jonah's black box or co-ordinating repairs. It was dull, but it was what the job was supposed to be, not gallivanting off around the galaxy like he had done before. As it was, he had enough time to be the first into the briefing room by a long shot. He saw Commander Kanz come in not long after though and as was usual recently she looked less than happy. Generally she gave the impression of someone slightly out of their depth or in a place they didn't want to be. Jared could relate to the latter but had carefully avoided the former all his life. Sort of like she just needed someone to give her a giant hug or something. Time was Jared probably would have tried it, but he hadn't been the same in the last few years. 'Good afternoon, sir' was all he could do now, testing to see if in fact the afternoon was a good one. 'Good to see you here so early. I...' Kanz faltered, and then picked up again 'I was actually going to ask you something...' This was an odd one. If it was to do with the ship, she wouldn't be hesitant. As it was, Jared had little idea what he could know that she would want to. 'What's that?' 'Have-you-heard-from-Lucy-lately?' she asked. Conversations with machine guns produced slower and more coherent words, as long as one remembered not to stand in front. Now it was just stranger. Why would Jared have heard from her if Kanz hadn't? 'Should I have done?' he asked At that point, more of the officers came in, and she moved on 'Can I talk to you later?' Jared nodded. As the briefing went by, he paid it what attention he could, but a murky memory was coming up of a conversation with Lucy in one of the Jefferies tubes. A connection was being made between him saying that her skills would be useful to the Venturers and the nature of the always misfitting Lucy. Oh dear...

[USS Vesuvius]
Jere had finished his shift, getting ready to go back to his quarters on the Starbase to pack the last of his things. He was just passing through the airlock on the Starbase when his combadge blipped.
=/\= Ensign Opet, you have a guest waiting for you at the observation lounge off the promenade. =/\=
Came an unknown voice.
He stopped dead in his tracks, now who could be waiting for him, he had to wonder.
[Starbase Bellicose]
=/\= Ensign Opet here, I’m on my way. =/\=
He turned on his heal and headed towards the lounge instead of his quarters.
This was a long time coming, she had long ago wanted to talk to Jere, but she did not posses the courage that he did.
She was now here to tell Jere everything that she could and hopefully it would be enough for him to forgive her.
Jere had turned the corner, bringing the lounge into view. He paused seeing the back of the figure, her hair cascading down her back almost to her waist. He knew that silhouette. What was she doing here.
He began walking slowly until he was just inside the lounge, clearing his throat to alert her of his presence.
She had been staring into the beautiful stars that illuminated the bitter coldness that was space. When he heard his voice, she calmly turned around.
"Hello Jere," she said hoping that he wouldn't run from her like the last time.
Jere didn't say anything for some time, just watched her. ~~Why did you come here?~~ he asked her in her mind. His dark eyes meeting hers, his heart thudding hard in his chest. It was like a bad dream, repeating itself.
~~You know why I have come Jere, you have always wanted to know about your past, and I have to tell you before my time runs out~~
He motioned for her to join him as he moved to sit on one of the couches facing the window and the stars.
~~Why now, why here?~~
He had thought he’d left all that behind him.
~~You silly boy, I would of thought that I had taught you how to listen~~
She joined him and looked at him studying his face carefully.
~~Like I said I need to tell you because I'm running out of time, Jere I'm dying~~
The shock on his face unmistakable. He raised a hand as if to touch her face but pulled back, knowing what one touch would do to him, would do to them.
~~Talk to me, tell me. ~~
His voice breaking as he lowered his gaze to his lap and to his hands.
~~Jere why do feel sad, you have hated me all of your life. What has changed now?~~
There was a silence between the two, her affirmation confirmed she continued.
~~I controlled your life until you ran away from home and to that stupid boy Ethan, but this is not the time for this. You have always wanted to know where you come from and I'm going to tell you.~~
Jere bit back a retort and shook his head.
~~Times change, people change Chrystalia, I hated what you were and what you represented. There is a difference.~~
~~You know you haven’t called me by my given name in years, but you are wrong if you hate my cause, you hate me. You were always ungrateful for what we wanted to do with you~~
Jere rose from the seat and paced before his guest.
~~So … talk ~~
Slowly the pleasantries were coming to an end.
~~Sit down, Jere, you have no right to stand above me. I cared for you and no matter what you owe me your life~~
She would not stand for this, she did not have to give him the information that he always wanted.
He didn’t sit down as she had ordered but instead turned his back to her and stared out at the stars beyond.
~~Either tell me or leave~~
He knew she didn’t come all this way NOT to tell him, to torture him just one more time.
~~That is where you are wrong Jere~~ Chrystalia stood from her seat and started out the door.
Jere never moved, just remained where he was.
~~ Go, now who’s doing the running ~~
He grew silent as he waited for her response.
~~I do not run boy, if I ran away from my problems like you did, I would have never come here. I will not tell you what you want to know. You will have to figure it out by yourself~~ Chrystalia said throwing a PADD at Jere and walking out of his life.
He stood there long after she was gone. Turning to pick up the PADD from the couch which they had vacated. He knew more than she thought he did. This was just the finishing touches on a long path, forgotten in the past. He turned and walked out of the lounge and to his quarters on the starbase.
(OFF: This post was done with the help of Ethan Hope and a prelude to a transfer for Jere. My next posts will be on the SBB boards until my transfer goes through.)

She was just about to respond when the door opened and other senior officers started to appear. "Can I talk to you later?" she whispered over, before turning to face everyone else with a slightly-less-forced smile on her face. L'Ola had already left the bridge for the briefing leaving Fox in command. As he looked at the time he knew the briefing would start soon and he had to attend it. He quickly called one of the officers. "I have meeting to attend to, you have the bridge." he said. The officer nodded and said "Aye Sir." with that Fox walked to the turbolift to go to the briefing room. The doors of the lift closed behind him and the lift took off with a soft humming sound. The door of the briefing room slided open before him and he walked in, seeing L'Ola and Jared already sitting there. "I'm not late am i?" he asked as he sat down in a chair. L'Ola shook her head. More of the senior officer came walking in after Fox.

Maverick looked at him self in the mirror, passed his hand through his hair and straitened his uniform up. he then gave him self a once over and left for the bridge today would be officially his 1st day as the VES... C.N.O and he wanted to make a good impression. He got to the bridge a little bit earlier than most but there we one or two crewmen there who seem to have the same in mind as him, he gave them a nod of acknowledgement and headed to the navigation console, he took a moment to admire her as he passed his finger over it, he then took his seat and began to formularise him self with the ships functions. as he continued playing round on the console commander kanz walked onto the bridge and took her seat in the captains chair she was then followed by commander fox who sat on her right in the 1st officers chair.
When every one was at there post she gave the order to depart space dock
"Ensign Maverick, take us out. We're heading for the Balla Cluster."
“Yes ma’am” he said with lots of enthusiasm
As the star base doors opened he could see the stars a big grin came a cross his face ((yes this is it)) he thought to him self He to the ship out of space dock at 1 quarter impulse and when they had cleared the bay doors and the star base he set his course for the balla cluster at maximum warp as the stars turned into star lines and they were gone. off on a new misson.

L'Ola looked round the table at all the familiar faces, and the new one, careful not to make eye contact with Reman. She couldn't believe that he had nothing to do with this.
"Okay guys, looks like we've got an easy one ahead of us." She could see the smirks appearing, things were never easy. "Yes, as those of you who read the brief will know, no one has successfully completed this before. And with our bad luck it could be even harder. But how about we keep a ship for our Captain and Chief Engineer to get back to?"
That was better, actual smiles were appearing. L'Ola hated it when people weren't relaxed. "So anyone got any plans for the mission? Suggestions on how we can get this thing done?"
She looked around expectantly.
<Anyone want to say anything?>

Fox looked around the table as it had become quiet after L'Ola's question.
"Well." Fox said "as we can see the last time a ship pilotted through this area, there was nothing wrong." He made a chart and some sensor data appear on the screen. "Tho since the last charting missions failed, i'd suggest we keep our eyes out for something unusual on the sensor readings 24 hours a day.
Then he looked around the table if anyone wanted to add something.

Nick and Sonaks shuttle slowly made it's way towards the shuttlebay of Vesuvius. It had been a long, tiring and quite relaxing couple weeks. The engineers symposium was incredibly boring, yet slightly insightful. It seemed the fleet engineers corp was still a couple years behind, just as well. It meant his ship was still the prime of the fleet.
The bay doors opened up and showed the shuttle the inards of the great starship. A quick blue blur signaled that the atmospheric forcefield was in place and active. Nick looked over at Sonak and Jatan. Both seemed much more at peace than when they had left. Sonak in particular didn't look hollow and pale like she did a month ago. Her eyes had life, and she was smiling, not frowning or pouting.
"It's good to be home," she said watching the threshold of the force field pass over the ship.
"You bet. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed again. Risa may be a resort planet but their beds are nothing like the ones we have on ship."
"I second that," Jatan piped up. A slight thud resounded through the hull to signal they had landed. The access hatch lowered to the deck to provide a gangplank. A lone Lieutenant stood a the bottom.
"Permission to come aboard?" Nick asked sticking his head out.
"Permission granted sir. Welcome home Commadore and Commanders."
"It's good to be home," Nick repeated and smiled at the Lieutenant.

Sonak echoed the smile of her husband and her closest friend. While she'd been peeved at first about being sent on compulsary leave, in the end she had to acknowledge that it had done her a world of good. The medical conference had been quite exciting, and she and Jatan had spent some quality time together. She cast a secretive smile on the two men accompanying her, and both men turned as if cued to do so, returning a questioning look.
Both had to acknowledge she looked much better, and even looked happy. "It is good to be back indeed," she echoed Nick's words, "there is no place like home." Yet she knew she wouldn't be back in command for a while yet; there were medical and psychological tests to pass, and she doubted she'd pass them anytime soon. Yet she was aching to get up to the bridge, and she was certain that Doctor Hedin wouldn't deny her the opportunity to do so.
Kissing her husband goodbye, the three of them parted, each going their own way. Without effort, Sonak found her way to the bridge, only to find it deserted. "Where is Commander Kanz?" she finally asked a yellow-clad crewman.
"Briefing room ma'am," the crewman replied, respectfully saluting her as she passed by.
"Thank you, please continue what you were doing." Even more quiet, Sonak crossed the distance towards the briefingroom, then hesitated. Finally, she keyed in the sequence to open the door, relieved to find some of her command codes reinstated. She stepped in and waited for Kanz to acknowledge (or ignore) her presence. Her first officer looked confident, Sonak noted, now determined to have her stay in command for the remainder of this mission. She could use the command practice, and the experience would look good on her personnel record.

Maverick sat down waiting for the briefing to begin; he fiddled around with his data pad trying to figure out ways to upgrade the navigations console. Maverick was a bit unnerved being in the room with all this heavy hitters but he tried not to show it, commander L'Ola Kanz began with her briefing but was interrupted by the door sliding open to revel commodore sonak. Maverick blinked his eyes in surprise he quickly turned back to his data pad as if trying to hiding is face from her, the commander nodded to her have a seat and continued with her briefing… after the command was finished with her briefing and every one was excused trey left the room with a bit of a haste leaving the others conversing with commodore.

<Just for continuity, I'm going to assume that the briefing that Sonak and Nick walked in on was a later meeting, so this is moving on a few weeks>
L'Ola sat talking in Sonak's quarters. The Commodore was still signed off duty, but was clearly in a much better state than before her trip. "So really you haven't missed a lot. From what I can tell, everything's running to time. In fact we've had chance to get started on that big pile of non paperwork."
Sonak half-smiled, "At least everything's running smoothly then."
"Sure, why would anything go wrong on this ship?" she laughed at her own rhetorical question. The truth was she was glad everything was going right. It would be too difficult otherwise to cope.
There was a beeping noise to remind the acting CO that she was supposed to be back at work. "Oops, I have to go. Want to meet up again later?"
<Sonak>
Engineering was a hub of activity. The team were still trying to work out all the repairs that had been done. Luckily their fearless leader was back, but that didn't make the work disappear overnight.
Walking around the room, L'Ola snuck up on Nick and Sarah, who were just taking an unofficial break. "Annoying Commander type person looking for an update" she annonced.
The pair of them spun round. "Hi L'Ola" Nick replied, "You don't expect me to be working so soon after arriving back do you?"
L'Ola rolled her eyes, "Okay, so maybe not. But once you're up-to-date I want a report okay?"
<Nick>
Ensign Robert Stokes was finally getting some research done. The labs were intact, the crew were all in, and there were no emergency plagues to investigate. Happy with his latest samples, he headed off to sickbay to check them out.
"Hi Doc, how's it going?" he asked when he entered the room. Having been working with mostly the same medical staff for years, he occasionally forgot you were supposed to greet senior officers officially. Luckily their fairly new CMO had got used to this habit fairly quickly.
"Hello, Ensign. Got some more samples to test?"
Rob grinned, "Yup, wanna take a look? Or are you busy with physicals?"
<Hedin>
"It's still not right, Jay."
"It is, you're just looking at it wrong, Kat" Jason called back, slightly annoyed.
"Well take a look at this for yourself then."
The pair of them were slightly irritated. Louise had been up all night with a virus, and as a result they were extremely tired. And now something wasn't quite right with the sensors.
Katia looked at the data again, "I say we call for reinforcements."
"Agreed." He tapped his commbadge, "Carter to Fox, would you be able to take a look at something in Astrometrics?"
<Fox>
"Actually, we'd better get someone else in here too" Katia thought aloud. "Amasova to Jared, could you give us a hand with the sensor readouts?"
<Jared>
"Bored bored bored..." Ed had been chanting the whole way down the corridor.
Finally Sam snapped, "Okay, I get it. You're bored. Now can we please actually talk about something, or do we have to carry this routine on INSIDE the holodeck as well."
"Wow, sorry, didn't realise it would stress you that much."
"Yeah well I'm a little worried at the moment, so am all out of humour unfortunately."
And that was the main reason for the holodeck trip. Neither of them knew what was going on with their friend Lucy. They hadn't heard from her since her birthday over a month ago, and Commander Kanz hadn't exactly told them a lot on the subject.
Just before they got there, the pair spotted the new CNO hanging around apparently not doing a lot. Sam looked at Ed, who nodded. "The more the merrier."
"Excuse me, Trey is it?"
"Yup, that's me."
Sam smiled, "I'm Sam Joughin. You wanna go shooting on the holodeck with us?"
<Trey>
<Hopefully that's everyone!! Sorry for the delay, anyone who's been talking to me will know things have been a little busy lately.>

Maverick was leaning on the corridor wall trying to get his newly replicated 21st century mp3 play to work when he was approached by two crew men
"Excuse me, Trey is it?" one of the men asked, trey nodded and answered
"Yup, that's me. What can I do for you guy.”
"I'm Sam Joughin. You wanna go shooting on the holodeck with us?" the guy responded.
“Nice to meet you Sam, and who’s your friend if u don’t mind me asking” maverick said with a smile
“Oh sorry that’s Ed”
“Nice to meet you Ed, and thanks for the invite I would love to join you guys”
The three men continued walking towards the holodeck talking and getting to know each other. It wasn’t to long before they were at there destination, the door slid open and the three walked in.
“Well here we are what’s next?” trey asked looking at his two new found friends
“Shoot and blow things up” Sam answered.
“Like what?” trey asked with a bit of dread in his voice.
“You know now that you ask I don’t really know” Sam said softly.
Maverick blinked his eyes in surprise, then passed his hand through his hair
“Ok how about this… I got a new program I have been dieing to try out…and its got plenty of stuff to blow to kingdom come. so what do you say guys, wanna party?” trey asked
Sam and Ed gave each other a quick glance and shrugged there shoulders “sure why not new kid, lets see what you got.”
Trey walked up to the console and keyed in a few commands “ok guys you ready” he asked with a demonic smile on his face “computer run program maverick death trap” he said not giving them time to answer his question. The holodeck quickly took from into what looked like a maze of rock formations.
“what is this” Ed asked “is that it?” he continued
“wait… whats that buzzing sound” sam asked looking to trey only to se him running away from them.
“if I were you guys I wouldn’t just stand there” he said not looking back..

“Hey what do you mean by that?” Sam asked only to see Ed run by. Sam turned around to see what seemed to be a swarm of huge bee like animals flying towards him but they did not look right they looked like they had Borg enhancements ((oh boy this is not good)) Sam thought to him self as he began to run. The bees seem to be gaining on him and there was no where for him to go or hide, they were right on top of him they seemed read to attack there stingers eradiated some kind of green plasma as they fired upon…
He felt a sharp tug on his left arm and he went flying, the bees just missing him. He looked up to see Ed and trey looking down at him they quickly pulled him to his feet.
“What in gods name are these things” Sam ask trying to catch his breath
“They are called Borg swarms and they are a nasty piece of work” trey answered.
“So exactly what are we dealing with here” Ed continued with the questioning.
“Well let’s see… they are extremely fast and maneuverable, got Borg shielding, can fire a plasma beam from there stingers… oh and one last thing don’t let them sting you or else…”trey said
“Or else what man” Ed asked
“You get assimilated”
“Ok so what do we do now, we don’t have any weapons…”
“And lets not forget we are in a maze here” Ed said interrupting Sam
“There are three i-mods in the center of the maze” trey said
“And what are i-mods?” Sam asked
“Infinity modulator… ok come on lets get a move on before this things get a lock on us” trey said to them
As the three men continued on they were able to formulate a plan in which they would be able to slow the swarm down. They came to what looked like at t junction in the maze
“What now” Ed asked “all we’ve been doing is running for the past 5 minutes” he continued
“Ok from here on we will have to split up…” trey said
“Why” Ed asked in shock
“To break up the swarm, that way it would be easier for us to maneuver and fight them” Sam added. “And am guessing that there are other weapons hidden around… right trey?” he asked

OOC: Sorry for my tardy response; my net connection's been down lately. I'll try and answer the tags you've left for me here...
IC: <during the initial briefing>
Fox looked around the table as it had become quiet after L'Ola's question.
"Well." Fox said "as we can see the last time a ship pilotted through this area, there was nothing wrong." He made a chart and some sensor data appear on the screen. "Tho since the last charting missions failed, i'd suggest we keep our eyes out for something unusual on the sensor readings 24 hours a day.
Then he looked around the table if anyone wanted to add something.
Hedin offered his comments "According to the after-action reports from each of the previous missions to the cluster, a minority of crewmembers suffered various minor ailments ranging from space-sickness due to suspected gravitic distortion in that area of space to unexplained bouts of hypertension in otherwise stress-free people to a few cases of what seemed to be some type of respiratory allergic reaction, at first thought to be the result of a malfuntioning shipboard air recycling system, though that was later determined insufficient to produce the symptoms experienced by the affected personnel. All in all, no adequate explanation as to the cause of any of these mysterious ailments was found, though all those affected achieved complete recovery through normal treatment several days after leaving the cluster."
"I can't really recommmend any precautions beyond standard procedure for these situations without more concrete data, something the other ships' reports are conspicuously lacking in. Still, given the knowledge we have at present, I would suggest that, upon discovery of any crewperson displaying symptoms similar to those previously observed, quarrantine of such personnel should be impemented so as to prevent any possibility of some kind of communicable agent being further transmitted. Despite the baffling nature of these supposed ailments, I have encountered somewhat similar patterns in certain airborne virus strains. We could well find ourselves dealing with something of that nature."
OOC: feel free to add your own character's comments during this exchange, and I will have Hedin respond to them retroactively in another post
IC: <a few weeks later>
Hedin, who was hunched over a computer terminal at his desk, looked up with a friendly smile. "Oh, no. Those I finished yesterday. All sixty-four new transfers processed and flagged as fit for duty."
"Just yesterday you finished? It didn't used to take the famous `Buzz` Hedin that long to complete such routine procedures", replied Rob, who was one of the few on Hedin's staff to have been bold enough to use the doctor's nickname casually. Though they hadn't known eachother long, the two had been getting along famously, largely due to Stokes' near hero worship of his elder colleague. They also shared a sometimes esoteric sense of humour.
Hedin made an ever-so-slight grimace at his young charge. "Merely a diversion of my attention, nothing more. And a worthy diversion it's proving to be, I might add. This bogey is one of the more fascinating specimens I've ever had the privilege of dissecting. Take a look at the latest results of the subcellular scan..." With that, the two enthusiastically plunged into their data with the kind of abandon only a dedicated scientist could truly appreciate, sifting through and arguing over ever scrap of information on the `bogey`(the slang used by Starfleet doctors to refer to an unclassified virus) that the tests conducted on it would yield.

“Yes there are, you can find them in sliver cases marked with a star fleet crest, they won’t stop the Borg swarm but they will slow them down till we can get the i-mods” “Ok let go” said Sam who seem to have had his game face on. Three went there separate ways, trey headed forward Sam taking the left and Ed the right. Trey was the 1st to get his hand on a weapon (static net) ((nice)) he thought to him self he and continued on his way, only to be stopped by the maze reshaping its self.
=/\= Sam to trey, what’s going on=/\=
=/\=this is trey… it seem someone or some thing must have triggered one of the traps, it’s coursing the maze to change =/\=
=/\=this is not good=/\=
=/\=sorry that was my fault=/\= Ed’s voice came over the com barge
=/\=don’t worry about it lets just try to get to the center, trey out=/\=
Sam was the next to find some weapons (impact grenade launcher) Sam strapped the launcher on and stood up only to find him self in a very bad situation one third of the swarm was heading right for him ((just my luck)) he thought “well lets see what these impact grenade launcher can do” he said to him self as he began firing on the swarm the explosion blow up lots of dust making it hard for Sam to see any thing. He hid behind one of the corners waiting for the dust to settle, moments later it was clear enough for him to see the bugs on the ground. they seem to be immobilized. He ran pass them and continued on his way
Trey was about half way to the center of the maze when an automated voice came in from behind him [intruder alert… all unauthorized personnel will be deleted] “that the…”was the words out of trey’s mouth as canons seem to pop up from the walls of the maze. The canons took aim and fired, trey was belly able to escape the blast, and he quickly got to his feet but was welcomed by a second barrage of canon fire. He dropped to one knee and rolled forward, the impact explosion flinging him into one of the walls, he looked up only to find him self looking into a canon barrel.[Target locked preparing to fire], as the canon recoiled trey rolled to the left then placed his feet at the base of the wall. The canon followed his movement and as it was about to fire he used all the strength he could muster to push him self backwards he then rolled back got to one knee took aim and fired the static net which sent a current through the canon causing it to over heat and shut down.
There was a big explosion behind trey turned to see what it was, only to find him self being saved by Sam
“Nice moves fly boy” said Sam
“Yeah but not good enough” trey responded as Sam helped him to his feet “there’s two more of this thing round the corner” trey added
“What are these canons doing here” Sam asked
“Perimeter defensives… meaning that we are close to the center” trey answered.
"hey where's Ed?"

At the briefing, Hedin pointed out the possibility that there might be somethinig catching around here. 'I can't really recommmend any precautions beyond standard procedure for these situations without more concrete data, something the other ships' reports are conspicuously lacking in. We could well find ourselves dealing with something of that nature.' 'But surely it needs air to be airborne? We're in space, how would it move or survive in space? Viruses are too small, they'd die of any minor fluctuation even if they could resist being pulled apart. That's why you can't fire nanoprobes through space' Jared pointed out 'Maybe it's something more inherent to the area' <Hedin>
'Amasova to Jared, could you give us a hand with the sensor readouts?' Only if noone needs anything done with the system feeds, Jared thought, but went anyway.
He made his way down to astrometrics, where the problem in hand appeared to be that the sensors were giving ghost readings around, including extra stars. Well they weren't so much extra stars as the same ones moved over slightly. It was like having a blurry picture more than anything. Possibly electromagnetic interference, high ion concentration or just sensors needing recalibration. Jared called up the readings from the trip so far. They were all slightly distorted, with the ones around here worse. It appeared that it was a mix of the sensors being off anyway and interference around here. 'I don't think the engineers at Conqueror fixed the sensors.' Jared explained 'I'll send someone from engineering down to look at them, but in the meantime I'll see what I can do this end.' 'Is it just recalibration needed?' Amasova asked 'Not at all. It's calibration that's needed. Recalibration puts them back to the original settings; here we need to make them work for heavier interference than they're used to. Expect ghost readings until they're fixed fully.'
Jared left the room and sought out Swift. 'Mr Swift, have one of the sensor analysts go and look at the physical part of them. I don't think Conqueror fixed them.' 'Starbase engineers, eh?' Swift replied 'I bet they fixed the weapons alright' 'I believe so' 'Well we both know how badly they do generally. Save this class, I don't think any ships have backup systems.' 'Remind me why you didn't go into starship design?' 'Academy wouldn't have me and I can't stand officer types.' Swift laughed 'Not to mention Starfleet ships are a joke. Their designs are so cheap, it's a wonder they fly at all.' 'I think that's the reason behind this class being designed fron scratch.' 'How do you think it would stand up to your lot?' 'It would fare better than other attempts. Even so, they're under equipped for any real fighting. One boarding party and this ship's going down. Speaking of things, do you know anything about Lucy Kanz?' 'Young Kanz? Now why would I hear something of her?' 'Because your job is to listen. Kanz seems to think I have something to do with it' 'Alright then. Word on Conqueror is that she went missing a little while back. She was meant to be enrolling in the academy but just plain disappeared. There was a transport named Hedgehog around at the time. Some of the crew mentioned something about some Tellerites and she was paying some close attention to them.' 'Does anyone on Conqueror know?' 'Officially? No. This was hushed bar talk. Noone would mention anything to the Starfleet crews because the Hedgehog isn't exactly listed. It was painted up as the Ira Gershwin, which generally operates around the Neutral Zone.' 'How do you know?' 'I checked of course. I don't know everything, sir' 'I also meant about the Hedgehog if noone talks to the Starfleet crews.' 'Well, that's just the officers. Generally people will say anything to a CPO.' Jared reflected on the collection of items Swift had in his possession. Given most Federation citizens were part of the single culture of the Federation, it was a novelty to see someone whose room was decorated with all manner of paintings, vases, models and other bits and pieces. His collection of heavy metal and similar was also astounding. As far as Jared knew, he didn't listen to it or even like it, he just liked having things which made him not like other people. The point was that Swift was about as secure to talk to as a stone and people knew it.
'Anyway, if you send the engineers down, I'll go and see Kanz, then go back to astrometrics.' 'Aye, sir'
The two parted ways and Jared made his way to the bridge, where Kanz was. 'You wanted to know about Lucy earlier' he said

<at the initial briefing> Questions marks immediately arose in the mind of the Ops Manager, which he put to the doctor. "But surely it needs air to be airborne? We're in space, how would it move or survive in space? Viruses are too small, they'd die of any minor fluctuation even if they could resist being pulled apart. That's why you can't fire nanoprobes through space' Jared pointed out 'Maybe it's something more inherent to the area."
Hedin sounded about as confused with his answer. "You exactly right about such an agent needing air, and it may be that the crews of the other missions were somehow exposed to a foreign atmosphere without their knowledge. Medical exam results from their reports indicate that several of the same personnel also experienced unexplained gaps in the level of acetylcholine in the hippocampus, a posible indicator of lost memories. Those affected may have been abducted, then replaced without remembering the events. There is certainly precedent for such occurences in Starfleet records, even in the midst of apparently empty space. However, I have to admit that this is all speculation until we obtain better data."
OOC: I'm trying to throw out a number of disparate ideas here, which anyone should feel free to run with should they find their interest piqued.

"Want to meet up again later?" Kanz asked as she rushed to her feet.
Sonak nodded, it felt good chatting with her first officer again. "How about dinner?" she asked casually, "or breakfast tomorrow morning, 0800? Then you can fill me in on our orders, and give me something to do." She gave Kanz a sly smile. "I do not intend on taking this mission from you captain," she added, addressing her first officer by her field-appointed rank, "it is yours to conduct as you see fit, however you will pardon me if I chip in with 'good advice' at some point will you not?"
<Kanz>
She watched as Kanz left her quarters, then she got up to look at her reflection in the mirror and decided to see whether she could help out in the science department. Surely Fox could use a hand, otherwise perhaps Hedin would need assistance.
"Greetings Mr Fox," she announced, as she entered the science laboratory, "do you need assistance with anything?" Hopefully it was clear to the ship's science chief that she was looking for something to keep her occupied and in the loop of ship's business.
<Fox>
After helping Fox conduct a few scans, she took the PADD's with her to analyse the results over lunch. However before lunch she decided to stop by sickbay anyway, and have a little talk with the chief medical officer. "You were right to send me on vacation doctor," she called cheerfully, actually feeling cheerful at that. "It has done me a world of good. Actually, I want to ask you a favour...I am feeling very good and would like permission to start working again. I understand that I cannot be certified fit for full command duty, but I already have told Captain Kanz that she will conclude this mission without much of my interference. However, I do not wish to stay in my quarters and just play mother the wife."

Nick let out a sigh. ~work work work~ he thought
~You better believe it~ L'Ola projected she looked over her shoulder, winked and stepped into the turbolift.
~Dinner, tomorrow at my place. Bring dessert~
"You telepaths are annoying," Sarah jibed.
"Huh?" he feigned to not know what she meant. He looked up.
"You kinda phase out when you talk to her telepathicly. It's annoying," she looked at him. He pretended to phase out and she hit him.
"Stop it already," He giggled and retreated to his office.
~~some time later~~
"There we go, report is done," he put the finishing period on the document and forewarded it to L'Ola. He scanned all three lines of text, text he'd laboured for hours to perfect, and smiled. The text read:
"Engineers Report Stardate ******.*. After reviewing logs and mainfests and after manifesting on my crew. I would like to say, I have nothing to report.
With that he hit send and sat back to rest his eyes.

“Hey where’s ED?”
Ed now had his hands on a brand new ((E.M.P riffle)) and with it a confidence boost. He also seemed to have an easier time the others, other that hitting a few dead ends it was smooth sealing… or so he thought. Out of left wing a few of the Borg swam came flying at him. He ducked and watches them fly right over his head, they then made a u turn and continued towards him ((this is not good… guess my rest time is over.)) he thought to him self. He got to his feet and started making his way to the center court of the maze, he had now come to the conclusion that it would be no easy task, for he now had a few dozen of these Borg bugs on his trail, he made his way to one of the corners in order to set up an ambush. He began to pick them of one at a time but he then came to the realization that that plan would take to long and most of the swarm would be on him in no time, he had to come up with some thing better. He continued making his way to the center court only to be welcomed by more obstacles, the maze floor began to open up beneath his feet whiles the walls closed behind him. He increases his speed in the hope of outrunning the collapsing floor. When it looked like he was out of danger more traps became active, sharp spicks protruded out from the walls, he dodged them using his speed momentum and a few gymnastics moves of slides, flips and spins. ((safe)) he thought to him self, he got to his feet and continued on his way
It didn’t take him long to meet up with the others
“Ed your safe” Sam said on seeing Ed come round the corner , Ed just gave him a quick smile and a pat on the shoulders
“ok now that we all are back together and have weapons maybe we should have an easer time getting to the center court… and its good to see you safe Eddy boy” trey said “ok now lets get a move on”as the three hurried of to fine the center court the Borg swarm again laid chase. They were able to keep ahead of the swarm with a combination of weapons fire. Trey would use the static net to bock there way Sam would nock them with his launcher and Ed finish them off with the E.M.P riffle. They were finally able to reach the center court and the i-mods, they each grabbed one and from a perimeter round the center post
“Ok here they come… let em have it” and they all opened fire. It was 10 minuets of heavy I-mod and Borg plasma fire. When the smoke cleared and the dust settled there was not really much to look at [level 1 complete… would u like to move to level 2] the computer ask
“so what say guy ready for level 2”trey ask with a smile on his face
“Computer end program… did that answer your question” Sam said “now let’s go have some shake down time in the mess hall” added Ed
“As you wish guys as you wish” replied trey they left the holodeck

"Expect ghost readings until they're fixed fully"
Katia nodded slowly. They could always take a break for a while. And she'd been meaning to talk to Jason about something anyway...
"Thanks for your help, Commander. Let us know when they're fixed, okay?"
As L'Ola left enigineering, and unmistakeable smile appeared on her face. Tomorrow was going to be nicely busy, with lots of people around. In fact, if she worked through lunch like normal, it might even be tolerable.
That just left getting through the rest of that day...
She headed back to the Bridge, and had been sat down for all of half a minute when another report was passed in her direction. "Thanks Lieutenant" she said, before carefully putting the PADD down. It would get looked at later.
A voice spoke up quietly from very close by "You wanted to know about Lucy earlier"
L'Ola spun round in her chair to see Jared sat in the First Officer's seat. She nodded her head towards the ready room. On her way out she looked over at the security officer on duty, "You have the Bridge, Commander."
Once they were safely inside and the door had fully closed, L'Ola spoke up again "So you were saying?"
"I just found out some things you might want to know."
"In other words, you know where she is but haven't decided how much you want to tell me. Believe me, it will be far more damaging to you to leave any details out." The edge to her voice said it all. There was no way you could believe that this acting Captain was no threat, even considering her height. "So what do you know?" She continued, emotionless once more.
<Jared>
<OOC: Sorry it's short and I didn't get chance to tag everyone, but I will do soon!>
