"All clear here too."
L'Ola breathed a sigh of relief. Half way through the checks and only minor changes required so far. Of course, the equipment half was always the easier to fix.
"Right, in that case I'd better start visiting the departments. Are you okay to finish logging the results?"
Jason nodded, "Sure... Have fun." he added, in his most sarcastic voice.
Leaving the lab L'Ola headed towards Astrometrics. She didn't actually mind doing the rounds, at least she could talk to everyone. She just hoped that all the people she needed to see were in the main labs. Having to walk through the majority of the ship's corridors really would make the job 'fun'.
"Greetings Commander."
"How are things doing down here in Astrometrics then?"
Katia motioned around her, "Well everything seems to be alright. Except for one slight problem..."
"I really don't like the sound of that, Lieutenant."
"Do you remember writing a reference for Commander Adams for that Chief Science Officer's post on that new research ship?"
L'Ola nodded, dreading the direction that this explanation was going in.
"Well he got the job, and since his new ship was just about to leave the starbase he had to leave without telling you."
Katia watched as L'Ola took in several slow deep breaths. "Okay, fine. We'll have to cope for now. Until I can work out what's happening, will you be okay to run things?"
Her face went paler and paler, "Ummm, I'm not sure I..."
"Katia, you're our only other Astrometrics specialist at the moment."
"I guess I can give it a go."
"Thanks, I owe you one." L'Ola called as she left the room.
"Please, no more surprises. Please, no more surprises." L'Ola muttered to herself as she went down the corridor. She only had two departments left to visit, but the medical science team had undergone a lot of changes recently.
"Yeah okay, it'll probably work that way. We could just give it a go for now... Oh hi Commander."
Ensign Stokes was a little embarassed to be caught running things in such a relaxed way.
"Wow, I'm impressed. Everything looks good. So, Ensign, have you got used to running the team yet?"
He nodded in reply, "Jas- I mean Lieutenant Carter is still helping out occasionally, but I think we've all got to know each other quite well now."
"Glad to hear it. So how are the preparations going?"
At that moment the red alert sirens went off.
"Hold that thought, I'll come back down here later."
L'Ola headed for a turbolift, "Main Bridge."

While they were standing in the turbolift, Branson took the oppurtunity to scan the mechanics of the turbolift.
Branson: Commodore, at this point I would like to assure you that I have made no demands on your crew whilst making my inspections. I have been a passive observer. While not entirely, as I have a monitoring program in your computer, although that is strickly sensors. My only interaction with the crew was reporting findings to Commander Martens, or Commander O'Malley when Martens was unavailable.
His tricorder picked up a flaw. There was a slight weakness in the metal of the turbolift wall. Over time this would grow to become a weak point in the turbolift system.
They exited the turbolift and went into Sickbay. Branson noticed in the CMO's Office two children. Doug shuddered slightly at the sight of them. He became nervous and his face flushed. He quickly moved to where he couldn't see them. Calm down, Doug, he thought to himself, just calm down. Focus on your work, and don't be afraid of them.
Branson: =/\= Bra..Branson to Grant. Jack, concentrate your focus of the program to Sickbay. The...the Commodore gave me a g-good oppurtunity to examine it. =/\=
Grant: =/\= Understood. Are you alright, sir? =/\=
Branson: =/\= Yes I'll be fine =/\=
As he began to examine the equipment, Sonak came back into the room. The two children looked excited and the Commodore looked quite happy. Branson tensed as he looked at the children, and began to sweat slightly. He looked away quickly.
Sonak: Is something wrong, Commander?
Branson looked quickly at the children, then snapped his attention back to Sonak.
Branson: N-no, Ma'am. Everything's fine.
Sonak: Then proceed.
Branson: Yes, ma'am. My inspection here will focused solely on equipment performance, as I have no expertise in medical procedure, and thats not why I'm here. My primary tool is the monitoring program I mentioned early, watched by Master Chief Grant. =/\= Jack, report. Have you found anything? =/\=
Grant: =/\= Surprisingly, no. Sickbay is working perfectly. =/\=
Branson: Well, my inspection here is complete. Amazingly enough, we find nothing wrong. The first system I've examined so far to have such a status. Congratulations.

"Well, do not congratulate me Mr Branson," Sonak said, her voice devoid of emotion, even though her eyes showed otherwise, "take them to the medical staff." She kneeled down to the eye level of the 5-year olds. "You two will not tell anyone, will you?"
The two shook their heads, but were grinning widely. "Mother, will he be our father instead of uncle now?" little Sevus asked, ignoring Branson's nervousness. Sonak nodded slightly, upon which the two went running back into the office.
"The doctor and I are involved," she explained to Branson, who seemed awfully nervous, "and Doctor Reckus has the most opportunity to watch the children. He wanted it so and if he does not have time, either Ensign John Caldwell or Crewman Guan Ortegez look after them." <yes, I found Caldwells first name;)> She examined the inspector closely. "Are you sure you are all right?" she repeated, after they left sickbay. "Come, I will take you to the secondary module, so you can inspect the systems there, assuming you are done on the primary module. We have each system thrice."
After delivering Branson to the second module, she went back to the bridge, were suddenly the red alert went off. "Report!" she shouted, as she sat down in her chair.

Nick rolled over and adusted his pillow. He again flipped over in bed and pushed on his lower back with his hands. The crick in his back didn't want to go away no matter how he twisted or contorted. He sighed with relief as a large crack came from his back and eliminated most of the pain. He sank back into his pillows and endevoured to go back to sleep.
"You realise that you're not going to be getting back to sleep," a soft voice came from next to him.
"Like hell I am," came the pillow muffled reply, "Me pass up a chance to sleep in? Never. Besides I've got a couple hours."
"You've never been able to get to sleep after your back's been bothering you," she said and mockingly poked him in the ribs.
"I don't have to be asleep to enjoy my bed." He rolled rolled over and embraced her in the dark and graced her lips with a kiss. Quickly he gasped and pulled back realising he wasn't dreaming, "KATE!!" He exclaimed. "Computer lights!!" The lights came on and no one was laying in the bed with him. A cool hand grabbed his shoulder and a hiss impacted his neck. All quickly faded to black.
~~~
Sonak sat at the head of the briefing table tapping her fingers. Almost all the staff had arrived save Commander Martens. His assistant Sarah sat next to where he should be sitting looking equally bemused.
"Computer, locate Commander Martens." Sonak ordered.
"Commander Martens is in his quarters," The computer replied. L'Ola looked up from her padd with a look of concern.
"I can't read him, can you ma'am?" She asked. Now Sonak started become worried, she nodded "no" in reply. Something did seem odd with this situation she couldn't put her finger on it. She looked at the security cheif.
"Ms. Hill send a security team to wake Commander Martens. It's not like him to be late."
"Yes Ma'am." She stepped away from the table to a corner and summoned a team to check on Nick. After she was done she took her place at the table once again. No sooner than she sat down a call came in to the briefing room.
"Medical emergency! Dr. Reckus please report to the brig."
Jate looked up in shock, his eyes curious as to what the call was about. He raised an eyebrow as the color started to drain from Sonaks face. Something wasn't boding well with her. He pushed off from the table and whispered in her ear, "I'll be carefull."
OOC: I'll continue later.
"You had better be," Sonak whispered back, "you are not wiggling yourself out of marriage now Mr Reckus. I want you to take two security guards with you, to watch your back."
Reckus nodded and placed the call while walking out of the briefingroom. He wasn't pleased with being called out of a meeting, but medical emergencies always were a priority no matter how urgent the briefing. However, lately too many crewmembers had called him for emergecies, where there was no emergency at all.
When he and his two guards reached the primary brig area, they found an excited security team waiting for them. "They're dead," one of them stammered, his eyes wide and his complexion pallid.
Reckus motioned for one of the calmer security men to take his collegue to sickbay. When the panicked guard was gone, Reckus knelt down besides the two guards on the floor. "This one's neck is broken," he quickly concluded, then moved over to the next one. "This one is alive, if only just barely." He tapped his combadge. "Reckus to sickbay, John (Caldwell) prepare for emergency surgery. I'm beaming a lethally injured crewman over, please do for him what you can."
=^= Acknowledged doctor, we're ready overhere =^=
Reckus nodded towards another security man, and the man and the patient disappeared. With shock in his eyes, Reckus stared at the holding cell, he knew perfectly well who had been held in there. Then he looked down at the dead securityman. "He was killed quite some time ago."
Again he tapped his combadge. "Ensign Hill, Mrs Martens has escaped. Dispatch security teams all over the ship. Advise caution, Mrs Martens is extremely dangerous." He tapped two of the remaining guards on the shoulder. "She may go to Nick's quarters, you two hurry over there. Me and my two guards will go back to the briefing room. She holds a personal grudge against our commanding officer, as well as her ex-husband. We cannot assume either are safe."
Caldwell frowned, as the severely injured security officer was beamed into the surgical unit. Two of his comrades took up stance outside the unit, glaring at any nurse who dared approach the unit.
"Get me 5 units of 0 negative blood, human!" Caldwell bellowed at the nearest orderly, when all personnel was frozen in place. ~damn holograms~ he muttered, shaking his head. "You two, refrain from glaring at the medical staff if you want your colegue saved!" he shouted at the two guards, "not all on my staff are holograms, some have feelings you know!"
The two instantly relaxed somewhat, but neither lost their alert looks and stance. To the untrained eye, they appeared to be standing at ease, but the duo glanced around sickbay covertly, looking for any possible threats, now that their most dangerous prisoner escaped. They both knew that, had the ship not already been at red alert, it would have been that by now.
Caldwell returned his attention to his patient, picking up a medical tricorder. A nurse was pressing a load of bandages against the young man's head in an attempt to staunch the bleeding. "Dermal regenarator," Caldwell ordered, and instantly the required instrument was slapped into his outstretched hand. Oblivious now to the rest of sickbay, the chief nurse (soon to be graduated doctor) set to work, repairing the damage to the tissue on the guards head.
"Skull fracture," Caldwell murmured, "first need to repair tissue to prevent more loss of blood. No damage to brain tissue, fortunately."
Beside him, another nurse silently set up a transfusion unit, not wanting to disturb his boss.
At last, Caldwell put down his tools. "He will have to remain sedated for a while," he announced, "but with plenty care and plenty rest, he will be able to perform his duties again."
At the door, the two guards sighed with obvious relief. Now, Caldwell turned his attention to the corpse which by now had been beamed over also. "Hangman's fracture," Caldwell noted, not needing to pick up a tricorder, "this man's neck has been broken, at the base of his skull causing his spinal cord to be severed."
The chief nurse touched his combadge. "Sickbay to bridge. I managed to save the one guard, the other was already dead." He repeated his message to Reckus.
=^=Acknowledged Mr Caldwell, well done =^= came the reply from the bridge.
From Reckus, there came no reply, but it didn't worry Caldwell. The CMO was prone to not responding if his mind was set to something else.
Branson returned to Engineering. Commander Martens appeared to be elsewhere. He approached Commander O'Malley.
Branson: Commander O'Malley, if I may have a few minutes of your time. I would have asked Commander Martens, but I can't find him.
O'Malley: What is it, Commander?
Branson: I was looking a little further into the phase variance of the cloak. I'd like you to calculate, given the phase variance, the probability that the cloak will fail while in use.
She turned to a console.
O'Malley: Well, lets see...
Branson: Without using the Computer, Commander.
He handed her a PADD to work with.
O'Malley: Now wait a minute.
Branson: Engineering Staff have to be able to figure these things out in the event of Computer failure.
''Crew evaluations,'' Daniel mumbled after he'd left Sonak's office, ''the perfect opportunity to get to know the crew.'' But it wasn't going to be easy to reach all of them, since a lot of stressing work was ahead.
He wouldn't want to be interfering with anything. Daniel decided to do the boring part first, looking up the medical records and the backgrounds of the crew.
In the time he'd been a psychologist he'd experienced that it was best to do some research into the people you were dealing with before physically meeting them.
But still, that did mean a few hours of leaning back in a chair going trough padds, not something to wake Daniel for in the middle of the night.
He yawned as he turned into the corridor that would bring him to his quarters, or at least Daniel thought it would.
Someone came running towards him, with a bewildered look on her face. ''Hey, hold it,'' Daniel said, blocking her way.
He took a few steps back being surprised by an undefinable blaze in her eyes. Daniel could hear her breath.
''Let me through,'' she spoke slowly and clearly, her fiery gaze burning.
''Are you okay?'' Daniel asked the woman, not feeling very confident.
She took a few steps towards him, making Daniel back off some more steps.
He casted a quick look at her and noticed a small device in her hand. It was a hypospray.
''I think it is best that you give me that,'' Daniel spoke calmly, yet his heart was thumping in his chest like it was about to explode.
Take it easy, just take it easy Daniel, you're a professional, you can handle situations like this, Daniel thought slowly taking breaths.
She moved in a strange way, she scared Daniel.
''Who are you?'' Daniel professionally asked. She didn't speak a word, but came too close for comfort.
Then, as she had been standin in front of him she was gone, and when Daniel glanced over his shoulder he saw her running around the corner.
=/\= Ehm, this is McVaye to security, I don't know how normal it is for a woman to run around a ship holding a hypospray, but, well, there is. Just thought I'd let you know .=/\=
=/\= Where are you situated mister McVaye? =/\= came a hustled reply.
Daniel said where he was.
=/\= We're on our way, thanks for the tip. =/\=
Daniel raised his shoulders, and didn't quite know what to think of what'd just occurred, he'd look into it later.
Two minutes later the door of his quarters greeted him by hissing open, and Daniel was found behind his desk, calling up crew records, while the steam of the cup of thea besides his desktop computer blurred his glasses.
''I really need lenses,'' Daniel muttered to himself, whiping his glasses on his uniform.
He took a sip of tea, and just as he'd settled in the red alert snapped him out of his concentration. Sonak'd called all seniour officers to the bridge, and Daniel decided he was seniour enough.
He got up, and exited his quarters. The turbolift took a while to arrive, but when it did Daniel got out, and observed to busy bridge. Let's see how this crew acts in a red alert situation, he thought, realising how silly, yet important that sounded.
As suddenly as the red alert had sounded, it also ceased. A strange calm decended on the bridge, as the emergency calls stopped coming in. "What happened?" Sonak asked, looking back at Meylor.
"I don't know ma'am," the Bajoran replied, a puzzled look appearing on his face, "one minute I am receiving distress signals, and the next the communications channel is completely silent."
The ship shuddered suddenly, as if grabbed by a tractor beam. "What was that?" Sonak asked, gazing out the window. Absolutely nothing could be seen, not even the stars. "Meylor, where are we?"
She stood up and walked towards the large viewscreen, then turned back to gaze at her crew. "Communications are dead, the stars are gone..." Her eyes rested on Bethany. "Any word from Commander Martens yet? He is long overdue for his duty shift. Please go by his quarters and check on him. Find me Commander Reckus too."
That, however, was no longer necessary. Reckus had just stepped onto the bridge. "You rang m'lady?" he asked innocently.
"No time for jokes commander," Sonak retorted, "Mr Martens is not answering hails, communications have suddenly gone silent and - she swiped her hand across the viewscreen - the stars are gone."
At science she noticed L'Ola frowning. "Anyting Commander Kanz?" she asked. "Mr McFaye if you have anything to add, please do so. I know you are here for crew evaluations, but if there is any other expertise you have in which you can lend a hand, I would like to know about it. Meylor, find me Branson and Sarah. If Nick is not answering they will have to do."
ooc: this is it folks, we're going our own way. Forget the Scavenger
*So where has everything gone? Check the sensors again. Just did that didn't we... What on earth is going on? Why hasn't he showed up to work yet?... Focus, must focus... Sensors seem okay, there must really be nothing there. Should check diagnostic results with Meylor... Wonder if the Ops console says why Bethany has to go down to check up on... No, must focus on work. Look at records of what should be here and compare with... Oh what's the use?*
L'Ola looked up, "Commodore?"
Sonak turned to face her, "Yes?"
"Request permission to go help Ensign Hill check on Commander Martens."
Sonak studied L'Ola's face for a moment, then nodded. She understood the young woman's worry only too well. Jatan walked up beside her and without asking, slipped an arm around her waist and planted a quick kiss on her cheek.
"She's worried about him isn't she?" he asked quietly.
Again, Sonak nodded, grateful for his comforting presence. "That she is. Commander Martens is not answering our hails."
SHe turned to Meylor. "Any idea where we are yet?"
"Nick!?" came the distant voice. He looked around the field of gray he stood in to see where the voice was coming from. Turning in circles he couldn't see the source of the voice.
"Nick!?" came the voice again. Still he could not see a person in the field of gray flowers. A soft wind swirled around him with the sent of honey.
"I'm here!" He replyed to the wind and waited for a reply.
~~~
L'Ola sat next to Nick on the bed. The side of his neck red and blistered from a forced hypospray injection. She cradled his head in her lap, slowly running her hands through his hair whispering to him. Bethany just stood near the door waiting for a medical team to arrive.
"He's here but can't get out. The sedatives were too strong," L'Ola said to Beth, her eyes closed concentrating on Nick.
~~~
"I'm here," Nick said again but no reply came. He got to his knees and began crying. "I'm here...." he kept repeating, rocking himself on the ground. His hands shook as the sobs began to take over.
"Hold on Love. It's going to be alright," came the voice again. This time he realised who it was.
"L'Ola!!!" He yelled and stood up only to be knocked over by a shooting pain in his back. He staggared to his feet only to be jolted by another shot. The world began to sway and he started falling towards the ground which quickly turned into the pillow of his bed.
He slowly lifted his head to see L'Ola sitting next to him tears falling down her face. He let out a groan and collapsed back into his pillow.
"Caldwell if you shock me like that again I'm going to hurt you," he mumbled from the pillow.
"Hey it woke you up didn't it?" John replyed with a smile. A biobed was waved over and Nick was transfered to it.
~~~~ Engineering~~~~
Sarah stood staring in blank shock at the monitor in front of her. Branson was next to her with an equally shocked look on his face. She pressed a button for a different set of reading, it came up looking the same.
Branson looked down at his padd. "That wasn't supposed to happen now was it."
"No it wasn't," She replyed with a deadpan voice. All fight had left her.
"Chief did anything go wrong with the engines during the test?" He asked his partner.
"According to the readouts no. The engines were working within normal parameters." John checked his readings again. "Wait no there was a fault in the warp bubble. But it shouldn't have done what it did. If anything we'd have felt a bit of turbulence."
Sarah still stood staring blankly at the screen. The universe around them was black beyond black. No stars, no nebulae, no nothing... just black. It bothered her immensly. Off in front of the warp core Carl sat with his head resting on the console in front of him. It obviously bothered him as well.
~deflector control~
Kate stood looking at the screen in front of her. The picture showed her exactly what she wanted to see. It was only a matter of time now.

''Ma'am I'm afraid my only expertise is to be the annoying psychologist that know how people should act in specific situations and doesn't stop bothering them untill they do as he says,'' Daniel tried to joke, though it wasn't funny at all.
He sighed. ''The only thing I can say at the moment is that everyone should remain calm.'' Daniel thought about how immensely stupid what he'd just'd sounded. Everyone should remain calm, he thought, is that the best professional advise I can give at the moment? Why did I ever become a psychologist...
He knew why. Everyone that didn't know what to do studied psychology. Daniel'd always enjoyed working with people, helping them with their problems, so psychology seemed like a nice study.
But sometimes he felt as if no one appreciated him, especially aboard a starship, no one ever respected him like a senior officer, or a cremember, at least so'd Daniel experienced it.
As psychologist, or counsellor as Starfleet'd chosen to call it there was little respect for you. But Daniel had to admit that Sonak asking him for advice made him feel good, untill he messed it up with his stupid joke and his even worse advice.
Then something popped into his mind, yet he couldn't figure how useful it was going to sound. ''Perhaps we have somehow entered an entity, ma'am?'' Daniel said.

After finding Nick unconsious in his Quarters. Beth took off to find Kate martens who had escaped from the brig.
"I am going to find her no matter if I end up unconcious or not. I'm going to make sure she knows what she did to him." she said to herself after L'ola left to head for sickbay to go see what exact sedatives that Kate had injected into Nick and to see how she was doing.
As Chief of Security I have to protect this crew no matter what happens to the best of my abilities.
Then she decided to go to sickbay and to see how Nick was doing and to ask him a few question if she could if he was up to it.
=/\= Hill to Sonak, "Im on my way to sick bay to check on Nicks progress and ask him some questions, and then I will go and find Mrs Martens myself.

OOC: Good to be back in full form Nick sat up in the biobed and pulled on a shirt. His neck still itched from the hypospray but it was something that he could live with. The sore spots in his back from the electric shocks were a whole other story. L'Ola just sat next to him smiling. She wrapped her arm around him and put her head on his shoulder. The sickbay doors suddenly opened to reveal Ensign Hill. From the look on her face it looked as though she was on a mission. "What can I do for you Ensign?" Nick asked politly but an obvious tone impatience colored his question. "Just wanted to ask some questions of you as you're the one with the most experience on our fugitive." "I figured. Lets see she's psycoticly bent on destroying this crew and their lives. She's a highly trained assassin and special ops agent. We both graduated top of our class at the Tandaran Military Academy." "Why would she be coming after you?" "Because I caught her. Because I'm her exhusband. Because she's deranged. Hell if I truly knew I'd be a psycological genius," a slightly perturbed look crossed his face. "She's somewhat deluded. On one hand she still thinks we're married and that nothings gone on. On the other she's completely aware of whats been going on and is out for blood." Beth raised an eyebrow. "So she's somewhat out of her mind." "Thats saying it mildly.She killed out last engineer and blew up the first Vesuvius," Nicks lips thinned at the memories, "Listen Ensign you're going to loose men if you're not careful. Jackson and Barnes were the first and won't be the last. She will stop at nothing." "Well..." Nick raised a hand and silenced her. "Listen. I suggest you dispatch security teams and quit questioning me. True I'm the expert on this psycho but this is just a frivilous waste of my time. We've all got work to do, so lets get to it k? Good day Ensign," He nodded, jumped off the biobed and exited the ward. He strolled into the turbolift and ordered it to take him down to engineering. L'Ola slipped in behind him and asked for science deck. A smile crept across Nicks face. "You think you're so funny don't you," L'Ola mocked. She smiled too and let out a chuckle. The lift stopped at Engineering and the doors parted. He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Later," he said and exited the lift. He strode down the hallway towards the main engine room. He passed by a window and stopped just past. Something had caught his attention so he backed up and looked out into nothingness. "My God," he exclaimed now realising the magnitude of the situation. ~~ Sarah rubbed her eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. Playing Chief Engineer was much harder than she'd realised. She leaned over to the desk and hit a button. "Carl have we got that data from the sensor team yet?" =/\=Not yet. They're still processing it.=/\= "Alright keep me up to date." This was the fourth time she'd called out asking for an update. She placed her forehead on the edge of the desk and closed her eyes. "Not as easy as it looks now does it?" a voice from the doorway came. She looked up and Nick stood there a wide grin on his face. "No sir, not at all. Much harder than I expected, how do you do it?" "Well if you've ever see me working in a jefferies tube you'll know." He winked his eye and Sarah let out a giggle. "Now if you please I'd like my chair back." "Yes sir!" She mock saluted him and stood up. He saluted back and sat down. "Good to have you back sir."

Casting a long glance at the counselor, Sonak mused that the man did have a point. "An entity....sensors are not picking up much, if not nothing at all. We see no stars on the viewscreen, and navigation is declaring us lost. Yes I believe we must have entered something."
With a sudden jolt, the Vesuvius suddenly re-appeared from whatever they had entered earlier. The crew only barely managed to keep their footing. "Where are we?" Sonak asked, peering over Marill's shoulder.
"Unknown ma'am," the navigator replied, "the sensors cannot correlate our current position to anything on known star charts. I am, however, picking up an M class planet a few light years from here."
"Set a course Mr Marill. Mr Meylor, get me anything on that planet as soon as sensors can pick up who and what lives there." She tapped her combadge. "Bridge to Commander Kanz, please report to the bridge as soon as possible. If Mr martens is up to it, bring him too."

L'Ola entered Science Lab 2 with a spring in her step and feeling more than a little relieved.
"What are you so happy about?" Katia asked.
*What are you doing in here?* L'Ola thought, but didn't say anything.
Jason looked up, "Might have something to do with our Chief Engineer's recovery..."
There was a moment's silence before anyone said anything more.
"Have you actually done any work today, or have you spent the entire shift gossipping?"
"Well..."
L'Ola looked over his shoulder, "Go down to the med labs. I think Rob has a few samples he could use your opinion on."
Standing up, Jason gave a mock salute before heading off.
Katia picked up a random PADD. "Right, I guess I'd better be getting back to Astrometrics then. Bye!" She left before L'Ola had the chance to ask any questions.
"Oh well. I really should work on that empathy thing a bit more." She tapped her badge. "Kanz to Ensign Stokes."
=/\=Stokes here=/\=
"Could you go to sickbay and get a sample of whatever Commander Martens was injected with? We're going to need to work out what it is."
=/\=Of course Commander=/\=
"Lieutenant Carter should be with you shortly to take over your other work. I'll be down later to see how things are going."
=/\=Acknowledged. Stokes out.=/\=
L'Ola sat down and started flicking through reports.
=/\=Meylor to Commander Kanz=/\=
She sighed, "How can I help Lieutenant?"
=/\=Could you and Commander Martens come to the Bridge please?=/\=
"On my way. Kanz out." *Guess the reports will have to wait then* she added silently.
"Kanz to Commander Martens, we've been summoned to the Bridge."
=/\=Okay, see you up there, Martens out=/\=

Daniel glanced at the viewscreen. ''That planet looks odly familiar,'' he sated.
''Are you sure sensors are not picking up anything mister Meylor?'' Sonak asked.
''Positive ma'am,'' Meylor responded from behind his console.
''What do you suggest we do captain?'' came Marill's voice from the helm.
''Stand by mister Marill,'' Sonak said. ''Lieutenant,'' she began, turning to Daniel, ''unless our minds are somehow influenced, I recall this planet being earth.''
Slowly Daniel nodded. ''I couldn't agree more with you captain.''

Sonak nodded. "Very well then, Mr Marill prepare to land us in the Sahara desert, that is just about the only place large enough to set us down undetected. Mr Meylor, as soon as we are landed activate cloak." She activated the intercom. "Attention all crew, we are going to land the ship. Condition blue, we are landing the ship."
The ship shook as she decended through the atmosphere. Suddenly Marill cried out in pain and collapsed beside his console. Sonak nodded at Jatan who sped forward. "Fox, take his station," she ordered, as she braced herself in her seat.
At last, the Vesuvius was neatly landed. Marill was beamed to sickbay, where Caldwell would care for him. "All right people, we are going to see if we can determine where exactly we are. Report to Shuttlebay two in an hour. Dress code is Nomadic, we are going to pass as nomadic traders. It is going to be hot out there so make sure that your body is suitable covered. Do not forget headwear, and sunscreen. I do not want you to burn out there in the sun. Also, make sure you have footwear you can walk long distances on, it will not do you any good if your feet are going to blister."
She nodded and dismissed her crew, walking down to her quarters herself to replicate a nomadic dress and proper headwear. Jatan followed suit, and soon they were dressed as desert people. Jatan wore cream wide pants with a light brown tunic and a brown sleeveless jacket. Sonak was wearing a long cream wide formless dress, matching his pants, with long pants. She wore a long sleeveless overcoat that was kept in place by a brown sash. Both were wearing traditional headwear, though Sonak's could fold over her face when needed. Of course, the male wear could also but she assumed that they would only need that part if they were going to end up in a sand storm.
"Ready?" Jatan asked, as he adjusted her clothing a bit. "I hope that we will not run into trouble. Fortunately, this headdress of yours covers your ears nicely. Hopefully, anyone we encounter will not make trouble of a woman being our leader."
Sonak shrugged. "That is something they will have to deal with. As I am not relinguishing command. My crew is my responsebility."
Jatan nodded, gave her a final long kiss before both departed Sonak's quarters and walked down to the shuttle bay.

As soon as the group, all clad in either cream coloured pants and tunic, or cream dress, left the ship by means of the shuttlebay, Harper ordered the ship to cloak. The displacement of the Vesuvius' weight on the sand could be mistaken for just a valley between sand dunes.
Sonak beckoned her group of officers to follow her into the desert. Between the frizzles of static, the sensors had only barely been able to make out a small settlement, and they were headed for that.
The group hadn't travelled far before a group of men on camels came towards them. One gestured to L'Ola, who had her face cover down. The male hopped of his camel and walked towards her, brabbling in ancient arabic. Fortunately for them the universal translators, tied into the ship, translated it for them.
"Why isn't your face covered woman!" the man yelled at her. When L'Ola, surprised at being talked down on, didn't respond, the man backhanded her hard across her face. With a grunt, the science officer landed in the sand.
Sonak had to restrain Nick from jumping forward. ~no~ she thought ~I will go to her, if something happens you are to lead this group to safety commander~ She gave him a stern look and walked forward. Boldly, she grabbed the man's raised arm before he could strike again.
"That is quite enough," she said, pressing down his arm. "You will refrain from hitting her." Behind her, Branson and Fox stood protectively before Bethany. Meylor and Nick stood both fuming, but Sonak had told them off. Jatan stood quietly to the side, unsure what to do. The new counselor, McVaye, also looked unsure as to what to do; the natives quite outnumbered them.
Instead of doing as he was told, he waved to his companions, who hauled L'Ola to her feet and unceremoniously dumped her on the back of one of the camels, and rode off with her. Their leader now rounded on Sonak herself. "You will learn your place woman," he snarled, as he punched her hard in the abdomen.
Winded, Sonak doubled over, but soon recovered. However she was not prepared for what was coming next. No sooner had she gotten another breath before he backhanded her. She tasted blood in her mouth, but didn't dare to spit it out. ~run~ she thought at her group ~do nothing yet, use your tricorders to find us~
From the corner of her eyes, she saw that three officers had to restrain Jatan from coming to her aid. The doctor was a strong man, but even he could not fight of three other men. Meylor and Branson held the doctor by his arms, while Nick pressed a restraining hand to his chest shaking his head sadly. ~we go~ she heard in her mind, probably Nick ~we will come after you. We cannot fight them, they know the desert. The needs of the many...I am sorry commodore~ She saw them turning and walk away in the opposite direction. She heard Jatan argueing. ~Jatan love~ she thought ~we will be married, I promise. Everything will be all right, eventually~
McVaye had taken up a position in front of Bethany. Even though the half Vulcan woman was quite strong, even she would be no match for the natives.
The man's fist made hard contact with her temple and she landed in the sand. She was only just aware of being hauled up and also dumped on a camel. ~run, protect Bethany. L'Ola and I will be all right~ she thought, before losing consciousness.

OOC: Forgive me for being late, guys...I've finally gotten a little time off to log on here.
IC: Meylor and the others struggled to hold back Jatan as he writhed in their grip, but ultimately it took a single stern command from Ensign Hill to settle everyone.
"BE STILL!!"
At this, the male members of the away team all froze in surprise and turned to regard Hill with new respect. Meylor collected his scattered thoughts of concern for his captured crewmates, sympathy for Jatan, and confusion at the general oddity of their whole situation and began to form a coherent plan of action. "Thank you, Ensign; we all needed that. Now, let's start working on the problem instead of making it worse by acting on poor judgment." He dug out his tricorder from beneath the folds of his robes and commenced a scan of the surrounding desert and the settlement which lay about four kilometres distant from their present position.
Counselor McVaye spoke up, sounding about as confused as Meylor was feeling himself. "Did anyone else notice something strange about that encounter?" Everyone else stared at him, rather dumbfounded. Martens quickly replied. "Well, besides our CO and CSO being assaulted and hauled off like so much baggage by what looked like a band of Arabian marauders, uh......no." He threw up his hands in consternation and started pacing in a viscious circle of his own anger. Ensign Hill walked up to him, placing a steadying hand on his shoulder.
"This emotional exhibition will not help recover the missing officers, Commander. Pardon me if I speak out of place, but I believe Meylor is right; we must not allow poor judgment to mar this mission. In a bewildering situation such as this one, rationality is our best ally. Now, as you were saying, Counselor?"
McVaye, having been temporarily distracted, tried to keep his thoughts straight, if only the sake of his own stability. "Umm, right. Well, I was referring to the fact that these `marauders` seemed focused on Sonak and Kanz almost exclusively, not even bothering to address us in any way, let alone attack and rob the rest of us, as you might expect common thieves to do. Speaking purely from a psychological standpoint, I would call that abnormal behaviour for humans of this personality type. If they are, indeed, humans at all."

Branson: Alright, everyone calm down. First of all, they probably are Arabian marauders. In which case, their behavior is actually perfectly normal for their culture. According to Arab custom, a woman, when in public, has to have all but her hands covered. All that is allowed to be visible of their face is their eyes. And marauders like those will, if something is showing, will strike her. Its also the fact that they chose to speak to him. When in public, a woman is supposed to walk behind her male relatives, and isnt allowed to speak.
Nick had taken to kicking the sand, and he looked quite angry.
Branson: However, this is reason for concern. Marauders will often kidnap women and either force them to marry them, or sell them as slaves. There were quite a few of them, so rushing them will only get us killed. I suggest we find some rival faction if we can, theres bound to be a few. See if we can convince them to help us.

Jatan glared at the chief inspector, dusting off his robes and shaking off his friends. "You have got to be kidding Mr Branson," he growled, and pointed into the direction the marauders had disappeared to. "If what you say is true, how are we going to get them back? What guarantee is there that a rivaling faction will aid us in retrieving Sonak and L'Ola? Yes, they are alive for now, and both Nick and myself will be the very first to know if that changes."
His expression softened and sadness appeared to his complextion. "I want my fiancรฉe back," he said softly, "and we all want our commanding officer and science officer back, and just standing here will not accomplish that."
He kicked at the sand, and started to wander off, in a random direction, ignoring the surprised glances. Not many knew that he and Sonak were involved, and nobody had known of their marriage plans.

''I wouldn't want to be the rational psychologist speaking here, but fact is that I am. We must think rationally, as miss Hill said. In these situation we tend to act following our emotions, as human or most beings instinct tells one too. Yet that will get us no further than trouble,'' Daniel explained.
Now that sounds a hell of a lot better then ''whatever we do, we must remain calm'', Daniel thought.
At least he'd gotten the attention of the group. ''What do you suggest then mister McVaye?'' Branson asked.
Yeah, what do I suggest? Good question, he thought, perhaps arm ourselves and force them to return our fellow officers? Or as mister Branson suggested, find a rival faction and offer them something in return of their help. But Jatan had a point too. Daniel even doubted they were going to run into a rival faction.
''Mister McVaye?'' Branson asked. ''Yeah, sorry,'' Daniel said snapping out of his thoughts. ''I have to agree with mister Jatan that finding a rival faction isn't a good idea. They might attack us, and I would even be surprised to find a faction in the middle of nowhere.''
''What popped into my mind,'' Daniel began, not sounding very sure of himself, ''was to arm ourselves and literally threaten the tribe to give back our crewmembers. However, we were already outnumbered by the ones we encoutered, not to think about how many there would be if we'd actually find their encampment.''
''Miss Hill,'' Daniel adressed, ''considering you are the CTSO, can you maybe think of a plan we could extract them from the encampment?''
Bethany seemed to be thinking for a moment. ''I think that would be possible,'' she started, ''but in that case we need data on their location.''
Daniel nodded. A thought slipped into his mind. ''Wait a minute, I could be wrong, but I recal having heard stories that some folks in the desert do not sleep, simply because their bodies don't need that.''
The officers gave him a sceptical look. ''That may seem not very relevant, but if we are going to extract them that would probably occur at night.''
He paused for a second to let the words sink into the troubled minds of the fellow officers, and into his own.
''But if they don't sleep going at night won't make much of a difference,'' Daniel said.
''Exept that it will be dark then,'' commander Martens added.
''We could use that to our advantage,'' Bethany said, ''also we have a huge technological advantage as well.''
Nick and the others nodded in agreement.
''Might I suggest we get back to the ship, think of a plan, get what we need and go get our captain and science officer back?'' Meylor suggested.
''Good plan mister Paht,'' Martens said, ''let's go.''
Not in the mood to talk the, group moved themselved to where the Vesuvius was situated.
The shuttlebay doors opened upon their arrival, after instructions from commander Martens, and greeted them coldly with it's grey walls.
The doors closed shut behind them, and from the outside the Vesuvius looked like nothing more than a valley between sand dunes.

This bit is written by Commander Branson: Haazim lay relaxing on the soft couch in the spacious tent. Two of his slave women stood over him, waving large feather fans, wafting the cooler air onto his face, as he sat stroking his thick beard. Outside his tent, the sounds of people jostling around and being jostled around was prevalent. It was a good day at the Slave Market.
The door to the tent was drawn back, and a bearded face appeared. Immediately, the guards on the inside of the door on either side raised their swords to block the way. But it was only his assistant, Sadat.
Sadat: Sahib.
Haazim: Itโs alright. Let him in.
The guards stood back and let Sadat through.
Haazim: What is it? I asked not to be disturbed.
Sadat: Sahib, Kazif has arrived with new bounty, and has requested to see you personally.
Haazim: Requested? Me? No one requests to see Haazim. Haazim decides whether they are worthy of his attention.
Sadat: Yes, Sahib, this I know, but he says this bounty is unusual, and deems of it of your interest.
Haazim: Very well; I will come and see this โunusual bounty.โ
my addition:
When Sonak regained consciousness, she found all her muscles to be stiff and sore. One eye would not open, and she knew even without proping that the tissue was coloured yellow-green. She had a massive headache, and she attempted to raise her hand to her temples.
Only then did she discover that her hands were bound. The rough ride through the deserd had caused her loosely braided hair to fall out and loose strands stood out, giving her a dissheveled appearance.
"L'Ola?" she called softly, but instantly received a blow to the side of her face.
"Quiet woman," a harsh voice said, "and keep your eyes down. I will not be looked upon by a lowly female."
To her right, Sonak picked up a groan, and knew L'Ola had woken up also.
The man spoke again. "Shortly, an esteemed customer will arrive. You will speak only when spoken to, and will not look up at him, understood?" When she didn't instantly respond, he struck at her again. "I asked you a question!"
Numbed, Sonak could only nod. She was still too dazed to try to read the man's thoughts and her sensitive ears were ringing from the blows to her head. Even if she had wanted to, she would not be able to look up.
"Very good. Now, if you two behave you will be rewarded with water and some food. Misbehave, and you will be severely punished, understood?"
Again, Sonak merely nodded. She was pulled up into a standing position and she felt someone dusting off her clothing. "You will remain standing until my customer has left," the man ordered, and without being asked if she understood, Sonak nodded once more.
