It was the crack of dawn and L'Ola was forcing herself to get up and start work, but she didn't mind. In fact she was fairly happy. Her owner was fairly nice to her, she was given jobs to do for most of the day, she was fed, and best of all there wasn't a stack of reports waiting at the end of the day.
Although part of her was desperate to get back, she figured that a few more days of this wouldn't do her too much harm.
After grabbing something to eat herself, L'Ola prepared breakfast for everyone else. They would want to eat as soon as they woke up. She then started cleaning the tent, not her favourite task but as she was not pressurised to do it quickly it was bearable.
She heard people moving around, so she went to tidy the sleeping areas. Looking around she thought of the mess that she had left her quarters in. It was a relative mess really, as she very rarely had anything out at all.
That was the last time that she thought of 'home' all day.
L'Ola was still tidying when she heard someone calling her. Not by her real name though. She went running in to where the family were. "Is something unsatisfactory master?"

ooc:warning! this post may contain bits that not everyone will like to read.....it is a bit of a female unfriendly post. No offense is intended by this post in any way....
The two men, both tall and muscular traced the Vulcan woman through the desert, allowing her to gain distance on them as they followed her. "Soon we'll get her," one said, as he pulled his hood up to keep the wind from blowing sand into his neck, "let her think she'll escape. Then we're going to have a little fun with her before we deliver her to her highness."
The other nodded, a mean grin plastered on his face as he scanned the horizon. Peering down at the device he held in his hands, he then pointed east. "She's gone that way. We must hurry now, or she'll really escape. Her highness will not be pleased if she does."
A third man trailed behind the other two, looking less than pleased with his assignment. Because of the Romulan alignment with the Forerunners, he'd had the task to help track down and capture the odd woman that had been cast off from the slave trader's camp. He didn't want to talk to the two men, nor had he any desire to stay in their company longer than would be necessary. He grinded his teeth together as he heard them talk about toying with her. ~this can't be good~ he thought, knowing that there was possibly very little he could do to prevent them from carrying out their plans. The two were much taller and more muscular than he was.
The trio trudged through the desert, finally catching up with the woman. They had found her, even though she was hiding under a sand coloured blanket. The tallest kicked at the blanket, while the other yanked it away. The first hauled the woman to her feet. "Gotcha!" he shouted in her face.
Sonak just gazed at them, knowing that anything she would say would just be a waste of breath and energy. She was pale and weak, even though she had drank from the water and had eaten most of the bread. She had known that running would be a futile effort in her current physical state. "What do you want?" she finally said, mustering strength to sound indifferent, and keeping her face impassive.
That just got her rewarded with a punch in the abdomen. One of them tore at her clothing, forcing her down. Sonak was glad when at last one of them was so merciful to land a punch on the side of her face, sending her into unconsciousness.
The Romulan watched from a short distance, a distasteful and horrified look on his face. He stood frozen as he witnessed their idea of fun. "Stop it!" he finally cried, no longer able to watch. "Stop it, is this your idea of fun! Mistress wants her alive...and if you continue....that's rape what you;re doing now. I won't have it, stop it!"
He ran forward, and tore them away from her forcibly. Later, he would not remember where he had gotten the strength. Kneeling down beside the unconscious and battered form of the Vulcan woman, he began to cover her with the blanket, making a make-shift dress out of it and tucking the bit that was left in over her shoulder at the front. Then he lifted her remarkably light form into his arms. "Fun is over," he said flatly, "let's go find Mistress Martens."
Surprised at being torn away, the two men straightened their cloaks and nodded. One even had the shame red on his jaws, wondering what exactly had gotten into him. ~despite being the enemy and alien, she is beautiful~ he thought grimly as he followed the Romulan.
"Mistress, we bring you the Vulcan," the Romulan said, as he eased her down on a couch, "permission to freshen her up a little?"
An affirmative sound came from an adjacant room. "Leave me," the Romulan told the two men, "I will do this alone. She will regain consciousness soon, do you wish her to go mindless at the sight of you two?" THe two left, and the Romulan got himself a bowl of hot water and several towels as well as bandages and a simple Forerunner dress. He set himself to gently washing her face and body, bandaging any injury that had been caused either during the earlier capture or by the two goons.
He noticed the still bleeding cut, knowing that there wasn't much he could do besides just manually stitching it up and bandaging it. Next he got rid of her stained and torn clothing and gently eased her into the simple dress. "There that is much better," he whispered, as he lastly set to combing her hair. Vulcans had been the allies of the Romulan Empire, before they had become extinct. Now, their achievements were only legend. "I will see to it you will not be harmed further if I can help it," he continued to whisper, but at that moment, Kate entered and he was excused from the chamber.

Katia kicked her chair back and put her feet up. She wasn't exactly sure what she was supposed to be doing. She was the only astrometrics officer on that shift, so she couldn't even carry on the training she had been doing.
The science department wasn't exactly running too smoothly. After weeks of lazing around gossiping Jason had finally been forced to do some work... only he couldn't remember what needed doing. He'd managed to miss two meetings through simply forgetting he had to turn up. Yes, things were definitely chaotic.
=/\= Lieutenant Wilson, incoming datastream =/\=
Not bothering to sit up properly Katia ordered the data to be sent to a PADD that was within reach. She smiled as she flicked through the infromation. Some of it was from sickbay, some from the med labs. All expected, and not entirely surprising.
The door opened, she didn't bother to turn round. She was expecting someone anyway. But after about a minute when no one had said anything, she got a little worried. Spinning round she saw Commander Fox checking some data with the sensors.
Katia watched him send a message up to the Bridge, and then started talking. "Umm, excuse me. Can I help you Commander?"
Fox looked slightly startled, "No, I was just locating Commodore Sonak and Commander Kanz."
She moved over and looked over his shoulder. "Well in future I'd check before using the sensors if I was you. I've been doing training missions with a couple of people and only just reset this console back to normal."
It occured to Katia at that moment that maybe she shouldn't have been quite so overprotective about the lab when talking to a senior officer. She'd just been taken by surprise.
She was about to receive a reply when, right on cue, Jason walked in. He was slightly surprised to find Fox in there, but tried to hide it. "Kat have you got that report for me?"
"Yeah, here it is." She handed him the data she downloaded.
A slightly surprised look appeared on Jason's face, but he didn't say anything.
Katia looked at Fox, "So you were going to say, Commander...?"

"Very good T'ral, you may leave," she motioned the Romulan centurian towards the door. "Oh and have the other two executed. I gave explicit orders not to harm her."
Sonak slowly focused her eyes on the approaching figure. Kate was holding a device in her hand and it could only be a bad thing.
She watched as Kate approached, and tried to sit up. She barely suppressed a cry of pain as it jolted through her body. Instead, she chose to just remain in a half lying down position that appeared to be the most comfortable to be in right now. She followed the woman around with her eyes, dreading what was coming next.
"You have no idea how long I've waited to this," She said charging up the device. It glowed a harsh blue at the end.
~Jatan, Nick where are you!?~ Sonak projected. Kate raised her arm to swing. Sonak sat up a bit as she noticed a form move in the shadows. Seconds later a second moved. Kate noticed Sonaks gaze and looked over her shoulder to see nothing. She smiled and twisted a nob on the baton. It surged to life.
She raised her hand above her head and began a downward swing. A hand caught hers and twisted the baton into her neck. She convulsed violently and collapsed to the ground in spasms. Momentarily the convulsions ceased and kate lay still her eyes glazed over staring into nothingness.
Nick stood over her body with the baton in his hand.
"Good riddence," He said, broke the baton and dropped it to the ground. Jatan rushed to Sonak and pulled out his tricorder.
"How did you get here?" She asked looking over at the prone form of Kate.
"You got us," Nick said, "One second we're in the desert and the next we're here in this compound. Really freaking wierd if you ask me."
As if on cue the body of Kate began to flicker and disolve into thin air. Nick stepped back in shock, Jate turned his tricorder on the scene and raised an eyebrow.
"Thats not possible," He muttered.
"What?" Sonak asked.
"Theres no biosign, no mass reading, no energy reading. She doesn't exist."
"K, now thats just too damn wierd for me," Nick reitorated. He ran a hand through his hair. "I'm getting too old for this crap." (edited for language)

The Romulan came charging back into the room as he heard male voices. Raising his weapon, he ran towards Jatan, ready to fire to protect the only living Vulcan in this universe (or so he believed). Sonak rose a trembling hand to stop him. "They belong with me," she said, annoyed that her voice too, trembled. "Thank you, for stopping the other two," she continued softly, as she shuddered at the thought.
The continuous throbbing in her body told her what exactly had happened, and she knew that she'd at least one broken rib from being kicked at. "Help me up," she told Jatan, and he reluctantly helped her to her feet. She yelped as she straightened, a jolt of pain shooting through her abdomen. "L'Ola?" she asked, casting a pained look at Nick.
"Branson and McVaye are tracking her down, with help from Bethany and Fox aboard the ship," her XO told her, a haunted look cast over his face.
Sonak took a few steps toward the Romulan, and placed a hand on his face. "You will remember saving us," she whispered at him, "and I will never forget what you did. We must be going now. You take lead of this establishment and make sure some good comes of it. Too many people have suffered because of Kate. Hopefully, this was the last time."
The Romulan nodded, not knowing what to say in response. He had never before been asked to lead anything, he'd always stood in the shadow of the stronger men. Yet, her words prided him, told him that he had honour.
Supported by Jatan and Nick on either side, Sonak left wherever they were, and they led her towards the location of the ship. "You must go to sickbay," Jatan told her, while summoning a few nurses to pick her up. "Caldwell will look after you, I will be back as soon as I can. Nick and I must now go after Branson and McVaye to assist in L'Olas rescue." He kissed her gently, before she was carried off by a handful of nurses.
<ooc: I'll write the final post somewhere tonight.....after which last responses to nick and my surprise ending can be written>

She was about to receive a reply when, right on cue, Jason walked in. He was slightly surprised to find Fox in there, but tried to hide it. ............ Katia looked at Fox, "So you were going to say, Commander...?" Fox looked at Jason, saw the surpice on his face, but ignored it. As he walked off he turned back to Katia. And started: "I knew what i was doing. I have served another ship as her science officer. However u might be right. I should have checked better before starting to tab the buttons." Looking back at the sensor reading he saw Nick and Jatan were near Sonak and coming into the ships direction. "Looks like everything went alright there." He said to Katia. In the mean time he tabbed a few buttons, making the sensors focus on L'Ola and her surroundings. A few tabs later the position of Branson and McVaye also appeared on the screen. Both were quite close now, only 6.47 kilometers away from her. OOC: That is close in starship traveling terms. In the mean time Jatan and Nick had left the ship again to aid Branson and McVaye. Also locking the sensors on them Fox could moniter their position and inform them about how far away the were from the others.

Life was good. The work hours were long, but manageable. The actual work was fairly easy. The company was good. And the climate wasn't too much of a problem as long as she stayed out of the sun. L'Ola was quite happy with everything, despite the lack of a day off in the forseeable future.
Happy and content, until she was folding her master's cloak and heard something appear in her head.
~We're nearby and coming to get you~
She nearly dropped everything she was holding. "Now?" she said to herself. It hadn't occured to her that someone would want to take her away.
L'Ola tried to ignore it and get on with her work, but as soon as it got dark outside she started to worry. What was going to happen? She hoped no one in her owner's family would get hurt.
The family went to sleep, and she just wanted to get things over and done with. Sure enough the tent opened and Jatan walked in.
"So here you are. Ready?"
"What do you mean?" L'Ola was almost hoping that if she delayed someone would wake up. It wasn't fair for her to just go.
McVaye and Branson entered the tent as well. "What's going on?" Daniel asked.
At that moment, one of the children in the family decided to go for a late night walk.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. Help Help."
Aban came running in, "Who are you and what are you doing in my home?"
"We're just here to take our friend home." Daniel answered.
"Well you seem to be mistaken. She belongs to me. I bought her fair and square."
"But the man you paid did not."
L'Ola wanted to run into a different room, but somehow she didn't think it was feasable.
"What is going on?" Aban asked, staring L'Ola right in the face.
"Well..."
Someone else walked in. "What's taking you guys so long...?" Nick stopped talking when he saw the situation.
"GET OUT NOW"
<anyone involved>

Branson chose now to step forward and interject "Please sir, hear me out. This woman is my sister. She was stolen from us marauders and sold as a slave."
Aban considered this thoughtfully. "I am an honorable man, so I am inclined to grant your request. But I will still require compensation for my loss."
Doug looked around at the rescue team, considering the equipment they were carrying, looking for something that would be of use to Aban. Then he considered the bulge in Nick's pocket. The field glasses. He stepped over to Nick and whispered, "Commander, give me your field glasses." Nick looked at him for a moment, then pulled them out and handed them to him. Doug turned back to Aban. "Perhaps these will be of use to you. They can allow you to see long distances, even miles." Doug showed him its operation, then Aban tried it.
"Amazing. Yes, this will be quite useful. But anywhere near equal to the use of a servant."
Doug then stood perfectly erect, face hardened. It was time for a little intimidation. "Sir, if you do not return my sister to us, I will return for her with more men. I am a very powerful man, with an army at my command. These with me are part a small part of that."
Aban looked nervous at this. He was but one man. He doubted he could overtake even those present. "Alright, alright, you may have her. But remember this, woman. I never mistreated you." He left the room.
Doug sighed after he was out of view. "Alright, I suggest we get out of here." They left and started towards the Vesuvius. Everyone kept looking at him. "Alright, so I had to claim you were my sister to get his sympathy. And the army isnt entirely implausible, as I am sure Commander Martens would permit me to use Security Officers for such a force."

~~ USS Vesuvius ~~
Sonak was only just aware of being supported to sickbay. She was extremely weakened, and just about every muscle in her body seemed to be aching. She clenched her jaws together tightly in an attempt to not constantly groan and moan. At last, they reached sickbay, where they eased her onto a biobed.
She was only just conscious and her mind barely registered being in sickbay. She saw a familiar face hover over her, the face pale and drawn; it was Caldwell. She heard him say something to her, but she could not quite make out what he was saying. She felt a pressure against her arm, and she started to swat at him in protest.
"What happened to her?" Caldwell muttered, as he pressed a hypospray against her arm. It contained nutritional supplements as well as a wide spectrum antibioticum. He glanced up at the diagnostic board and instantly saw her biosigns stabilize somewhat. He picked up a scanner and closed the diagnostic semicircle over her body.
Instantly, the diagnostic board started beeping and Caldwell frowned. Then his face reddened as he read the results of the examination. "Those...those....[word deleted]!" he exploded, startling several nurses in the process. "Oh excuse me," he apollogized, then tapped the PADD, "just something I read." ~there is nothing much I can do yet~ he thought ~she must first stabilize before I can treat her properly~
~~ desert encampment ~~
Jatan pulled L'Ola along quietly, and felt her struggle against him somewhat. "Nick? Doug?" he called, "please assist me. I may have to knock her out if she keeps putting up a resistance."
Both men took the young woman over from him, and the group walked back to the Vesuvius. They were all eager to get off planet. As soon as they got aboard, Nick disappeared to the brigde while Branson and Reckus went to engineering and sickbay respectively.
No sooner was the Vesuvius set off towards space again, when a bright flash blinded them all.
~~ afterwards ~~
With a moan, Sonak picked herself up from the deck, assisted by two yeomen who looked pale and apprehensive. "Position?" she managed, as she was helped into her chair. She wondered why her entire body was sore, and she cried out in pain when they set her down gently in her chair. "Help me up," she ordered, wincing as a broken rib painfully prodded into her lungs.
At the science station, L'Ola sat stiffly, looking bruised and tired, even uncomfortable as if she was longing to be someplace else. Meylor, at OPS, mentioned that they were still several thousands of kilometers away from a black hole.
Surprise registed on Sonak's face. "But..." she started, then looked around, her expression one of pain and haunting. "Kate!" she suddenly exclaimed, "the..." She paled visibly at the memory, "they...." She faltered, wondering if she was going crazy. She gazed at the counselor. "Assessment of the situation counselor?" she asked, her voice trembling, as was her entire body. ~I am Vulcan~ she chided herself, attempting to compose herself.
She looked at her hand, which showed crude stitches, and she gingerly touched her face. Around one eye, the tissue was very sensitive and she assumed that were the remnants of a black eye. She looked around again, then her eyes locked with L'Olas. "How do you feel?" she finally whispered, "do you feel as odd as I do? Did we imagine things?"
"Ma'am," Ensign Hill called from tactical, "tactical logs show that we have not engaged the cloak since leaving Bellicose. Also, sensor logs indicate that we have not moved from this spot since our arrival here."
Meylor nodded his agreement with Hill's report.
<I might modify later......feel free to respond though. We are now no longer on the planet, please do not respond to planet parts>

OFF: Joint post; Sonak and McVaye.
ON: Daniel cast a look around, confused. He could swear he felt desert sand grinding between his teeth.
He reached for his eye. It was bruised. What the? Am I going crazy?
He looked around, and saw that he shared his confusement. The commodore looked very unhealthy. Daniel approached her.
''Commodore, what, I mean, well,'' Daniel muttered, not really knowing what to say.
Sonak looked back, uncertain what to say.
In her eyes Daniel saw an enormous chaos of emotions. ''Captain,'' he said, ''we need to talk.''
Sonak nodded weakly. "Yes, I believe so," she started, leaning heavily on the two yeomen, "please escort me to sickbay." She glanced at L'Ola. "Commander, you should report to sickbay too, at your earliest convenience." When the science officer nodded, she returned her attention to the counselor. "You were saying?" she asked, "oh yes, yes we need to talk." She swallowed, trying to ignore the throbbing pain just about everywhere.
''I think your office would suit us?'' Daniel suggested.
Sonak shook her head ever so slowly. "Sickbay," she said, "I need medical attention." When McVaye looked determined, she sighed. "Very well, my readyroom."
Daniel escorted Sonak to her readyroom. Tiredly she sank down in the normally comfortable chair behind her desk. ''What happened?'' Daniel asked. What happened? Hows that going to help her! Daniel thought. ''Let me rephrase that. I haven't often seen so much emotion in someone's eyes, especially not in a Vulcan's.''
She sat down and winced then looked up at McVaye and gestured for him to take the other seat. "What happened, you ask," she said softly, "a lot happened, please be more specific in your questions."
Indeed I should be more specific, Daniel thought. ''What is the first thing you can remember?''
"Assuming you mean after landing the ship....I suppose seeing L'Ola getting beaten and carried off by marauders. If you mean after my capture....I am not sure. A tent, guards, being beaten quite a lot....." A pained expression crossed her face, as she fought to stay calm.
That's what I meant. ''Any detail on what they did to you? Of course it hurts, I know that, but trust me, talking about it will help,'' Daniel carefully tried.
Sonak sat thoughtful for a moment, wondering why exactly she had consented to talking to the counselor. ~I suppose he is right~ she thought. "They beat us, just because we are female. They beat us for the slightest reason they could think of, ranking from just having our faces uncovered, to being slow in getting things done. It was embarassing to say the least, and I have the bruises to prove it."
Daniel nodded, but felt that she hadn't told the worst yet. ''For me, as a man, it's hard to imagine being humiliated for what I am, but I do know that discrimination, both mentally and physically can be extremely painfull.''
''But more happened, didn't there?'' Daniel asked, seeing that Sonak felt a little caught.
She nodded in silence, feeling blood rush back into her face. She felt weak, and extremely cold; she shivered as she thought back to recent events. "After I was sold, I thought life would be better. I cared for a couple of children, but the local doctor got jealous of my skills and convinced the owner to cast me out. I was sent into the desert without food and water, but the owners son took pity on me and tracked me down to get me food and water, as well as a blanket....." Her voice trailed off for a moment then she fell silent. Her breathing was laboured as she continued. "Two men caught me, struck and kicked at me and then they......" She looked up at the counselor, but she could not say it. "They....I am sorry I cannot say it, I just cannot. But the Romulan stopped them at last, I do not know why, he could easily have joined them."
Daniel took a long time to let Sonak's words sink in. ''They abused you?'' Daniel asked, almost whispering, immediately after that realizing that the question hadn't been nessercary.
She nodded again ever so slightly. "Yes," she whispered, "yes they did. And then there was Kate, I truly thought she was going to kill me. I have never before in my life been so afraid."
''Can you tell me a little about Kate? I don't know much about her, exept that she is commander Marten's ex-wife,'' Daniel asked softly.
"She is evil," Sonak said, suddenly her eyes filled with pure hatred, "she killed my bondmate, and destroyed my ship. She is completely insane and still believes that Commander Martens is married to her and loves her. That is all we know about her, and she leads the Forerunners, some rogue band of people who believe they can manipulate the universe."
That was not the answer Daniel'd imagined he'd get. It took him some time to process. ''You have been through a lot-'' Too much. ''-the last few days. We need to find a suitable way for you to sort all these events out. Just a question mrs Sonak, have you ever cried? How do you usually express your emotions?''
"I am Vulcan," Sonak said, "but as I was raised by humans I have learned to express emotion....usually only in presence of friends. Since Jatan and I got together, a little more often." Then she started sobbing, not even knowing exactly what prompted that. "I......." She hadn't even noticed he had called her "Mrs", however appropriate it was. "The last time, I suppose was when I discovered Jatan was killed on the holodeck," she confessed between sobs, which sent jolts of pain through her body, "or when Shanna and Seliv were born. I do not remember."
''To be quite honest with you Sonak, I have always thought the Vulcan way of supressing emotions very unhealthy. But it is not my job to critisize civilizations and their habits. One thing you should do, and especially during the coming days, is express your emotions as soon as you experience them. Do not ignore them. That's my advice for know. You should go to sickbay, and after that straight to bed, you need a few days of rest. I could abuse my position as counsellor to order you not to fullfill your captaincy in the upcoming days, but I daresay that won't be nessercary. I will think about what you told me, and how I can best help you deal with it. We'll talk again tomorrow, or the day after that.''
Daniel gave her a warm smile, as he got up from the chair. ''You're a strong and wise woman Sonak, you know what's right for you at the moment. He exited the readyroom.
Sonak remained behind, waiting for the two yeomen to help her down to sickbay.

All systems were showing optimal performance with no sign of damage or tampering. In fact the ship showed no sign of ever landing on a planet.
~incredibly odd if you ask me~ Nick thought to himself.
=/\= Medical emergency in the brig=/\=
Nick sat upright in the command chair. Being one of the only members of the Sr. Staff uninjured on the away mission he was assigned to bridge duty. He waved an auxilury officer to take command of the bridge and made his way down to the brig with a security team.
The security team arrived at exactly the same time as the medical team did. Nick walked into the room first followed by the rest. The two guards stood looking into one of the cells through the force field. With a nod the field was lowered and the medics stepped foreward.
There on the floor lay Kate with a large nasty looking burn on the side of her face and neck. Her glazed eyes stared off at one of the walls. A medic went over and checked her pulse.
"It's faint but it's there. She's in a coma though..." He pulled out a tricorder and scanned her. "indefinatly at that," he said closing his tricorder.
"Lieutenant, you have the scene," Nick said to the security officer. He glanced at the prone body and a small smile crossed his face.
~good, stay that way. I'm better off~

The two yeomen were very cautious in helping the commodore to sickbay. They had both suggested site to site transport but she would have nothing of it, thus they had shrugged and let her have her way. Upon entering, Caldwell rushed towards them and motioned for them to lead her to a biobed. "Thank you gentlemen, that was most courteous of you, I will make sure she'll note it on your personal records."
Sonak gave a quiet nod as she heard him talk to the to yeomen. "Tell Nick," she requested of them, "he will see to it. She lay back as Caldwell returned and watched him frown as he closed the diagnostic semicircle over her.
"I'll swear Ive run these tests before commodore," he said, frowning then checked the computer. "There is no record of the exams, but I am very sure I ran them."
"You did," Sonak said, sounding very tired, "you even yelled about one of the results. Now please...could you get to taking care of the pain? It is becoming unbearable."
Caldwell nodded, and turned to retrieve any medication needed when he almost tripped over one of Sonak's children. "I saw mother walk in here," the boy said, "may I see her?" He was holding the hand of his younger brother, who looked to be close to tears.
Caldwell nodded. "Not too long," he said.
The boys walked into the shielded off room. "Mother?" Sevus called. The biobed was just a little too high for him to see. "Mother are you all right?"
"No," Sonak whispered, "I am not. Please go find Jatan and stay with him until I get home." She peered over the edge of the bed into her son's face. "Do not disobey me my son, go to Jatan."
The boy gasped at seeing her. "Seliv wanted you mother," he said.
"Very well, hand him up to me." She gave her little son a tight hug, and promptly started crying again.
Caldwell came back and rescued the boy from her tight hug. "You two must go now," he told the boys, "your mother is a little upset, but she'll be fine soon." He sent a nurse with them to make sure they got home safely, then turned back to his patient. He mended the two broken ribs with practiced ease, then turned to her other injuries. "You will still be a little sore," he told her, "but I believe the body should be left to deal with most of the pains itself, so that the patient will not overtax him or herself."
Sonak nodded in quiet agreement, knowing only too well what the result of overtaxing would result in.
"I take it you have seen a counselor?" Caldwell continued, helping her to sit up, "very good. I would like you to see him tree times a week if possible and I want you to rest. You're relieved of duty for now, and I expect you back in here tomorrow for another check-up. Spends some time with the kids and Jatan, but you're banned from the bridge for at least three days."
Eyes widening at the order, Sonak at last nodded, then literally jumped as Caldwell pressed a hypo against her arm. "If you're quick, you can reach your quarters before you pass out," he said, smiling sweetly, "it'll help you sleep. You need it."
Sonak nodded and with Caldwells help stepped down from the biobed. She reached her quarters well before she felt the sedative kick in. "Sonak to Commander Martens. I've been relieved of duty as per medical order, you've got command until further notice. Get us back to Bellicose at best possible speed. Sonak out."
She only just reached her bedroom, and decided to just lie down, not bothering to change into sleeping attire. As soon as she felt the soft comforts of her bed, she fell into a deep sleep.

L'Ola got her head down and started working. She didn't want to be there. She really didn't want to be there. But working on the Bridge was far better than being parcelled off to sickbay.
Unfortunately her brilliant ideas did not last long, as Sonak practically ordered her to pay the Doctor a visit. The only question was whether sickbay had been told to expect anyone yet...
"I'm heading down to sickbay, will someone get another science officer up here?" She asked
Without waiting for a reply she entered a turbolift and got moving.
L'Ola stood outside the door to sickbay sliding her fingers over her commbadge without actually pressing it.
In a swift and desperate move, she moved close enough to open the doors, went in, placed the badge she was holding out of sight, grabbed a tricorder and went out. And that was only the beginning.
Luckily the corridor was relatively empty, so she managed to get into a Jeffries' tube unseen. Once inside she programmed the tricorder to scan sensor readings immediately surrounding her, and project them where she was. This, along with erasing the record of her biosigns, made her virtually invisible to the casual eye. Not that anyone should be looking for her for a while.
Now the only things L'Ola had to think about was where to go. That didn't take particularly long, as she remembered a maintenance hatch just by science lab 1 that had only been opened once since the ship's launch (and then it was only to prove it existed).
So with her data all set up and peace guaranteed for at least a while, she started to get herself back into the mindset of scientific work.

Daniel's mind raced. Images of the last few days flashed passed his mind. The sand, the desert, the guard he took out.
He sighed. I'm getting too old for this, he joked as he cast a look in the mirror. His reflection looked tired, and Daniel failed supressing a yawn.
He thankfully splashed some fresh water into his face, and gave it some time to trickel down before he removed it with a towel.
Daniel took off his clothes, and stepped under the sonic shower. He let it clean him for five minutes, then he picked up a clean uniform and donned it.
The next officer on his list was L'Ola Kanz. She too had been captured, yet not shown up at his doorstep yet.
Of course not, why got to a counsellor when you've been through the worst days of your life? Daniel thought sarcastically as he exited his quarters.
Arriving on the bridge he couldn't find L'Ola at the sciencestation.
She's in sickbay of course, he thought, turning to get into the turbolift again.
''Sickbay,'' he ordered, and the lift began it's humming descent.
He was greeted by Caldwell, and was surprised not to find L'Ola here.
''Can I help you?'' Caldwell asked, coming in Daniel's direction. ''Let me have a a look at your eye.'' ''Oh, yes, my eye, of course.'' Daniel hadn't even noticed it anymore, but now that Caldwell mentioned it he felt it throbbing a little.
''Not much I can do here, must heal on it's own,'' Caldwell said.
Ironic, Daniel thought, they can mend broken bones with a snap of their fingers, yet a simple bruise needs natural healing.
''Actually I was looking for miss Kanz,'' Daniel notified. ''Oh? I haven't seen her yet.'' Daniel was surprised to hear. ''Commodore Sonak ordered her to sickbay,'' Daniel told, ''and I'd like to have a word with her, she's been through a lot.''
That's strange, Daniel thought.
=/\=McVaye to commander Kanz, come in please. =/\=
Static.
Daniel repeated his action.
Nothing.
''Computer locate commander Kanz,'' Daniel said. *Commander Kanz is in sickbay,* the computer informed.
Daniel gave Caldwell a puzzled look, and walked over to a console where he called up L'Ola's position.
''Do you always keep your patients in closets doc?'' Daniel asked turning to Caldwell. ''What?''
Daniel walked to a small medical cabinet and opened it. He removed a few medications and found what he was looking for. L'Ola's communicator.
''Look's like someone is on the run,'' Daniel said. ''I'll scan for her biosign,'' Caldwell said sighing.
He gave the computer a few commands. ''She's been busy,'' Caldwell said. ''What?'' ''I can't locate her,'' Caldwell informed.
''Great,'' Daniel said, ''a science officer on the run is not easy to catch if she doesn't want to be caught.''
Caldwell nodded.
''I'd best inform commander Martens,'' Daniel said exiting sickbay, ''thank's for your help doc.''
The turbolift took him up again, and Daniel entered the bridge again, looking for Nick.

"Thanks, I owe you one."
"No problem, just let me know when everything's okay again."
Jason stood up and headed back into science lab 1. At least he knew what was going on now, even if he wasn't entirely sure how long for or how public the information he had should become.
=/\=Wilson to Lieutenant Carter, I really need to talk to you about this.=/\=
"Yes I know, Kat. Will you just give me five minutes? I'm kind of busy."
=/\=Yeah right, you're never busy.=/\=
"Seriously I am. I'll call in a bit. Carter out."
He sighed and pressed a few buttons. *I need a good reason to restrict access to the lab... hazardous specialist chemicals. Something like that. Oh well it will have to do. Can't have people walking in and out until I've checked on the publicity thing...*
"Well, it's now or never." Jason said, trying to convince himself of that fact.
He brought up some information on a console and had a look around. After making sure the information was safely stowed away again, he opened up the maintenance hatch.
"Guess who."
L'Ola sighed, "I must admit, I wasn't expecting you to be the first to find me."
"Well it wasn't that difficult to work out given my complete knowledge of all the science labs..." Jason replied, rather unconvincingly.
She gave him a completely unbelieving look. "Okay... but could you please tell me how you actually found out. Just for future reference.
"Fine, if you must know, I used my contacts."
"Your constant gossiping has a use?"
"Apparently. Anyway, I talked to a couple of people in sickbay, who talked to a couple of friends. And about 10 minutes ago I contacted a friend of yours on Earth." He paused to see if he got a reaction. He did.
L'Ola looked mildly impressed, "Jenna, of course. She was the one that got me to look for this place. So when do security arrive to cart me off to sickbay?"
Jason shrugged, "I don't know. Not sure if they even know where you are. Now I've blocked access to science lab 1 to anyone except the two of us, do you want me to start doing the same to a couple of the others that are empty. You know, go round and make it look like you're moving."
He was greeted with a smile. "Thank you, I owe you one."
"No probs. I would love to stay and chat a little longer but I have to go sort something out in Astrometrics. Let me know when you leave."
"Will do. Bye."
Satisfied that there was at least one reasonable person on the ship, L'Ola curled herself up again and got back to work.

The next day, Sonak woke up early and she glanced around in mild confusion. She could not remember how she had gotten into her bed, but she was pleased Jatan had curled up beside her. Carefully, so not to wake him up, she slipped out of the bed and dressed herself.
"Sonak to bridge, ETA to Starbase Bellicose?"
"Bridge. Martens here. About two hours at current speed ma'am," Nick reported from the bridge, and she heard him smile, "but I'm actually not supposed to tell you that as you are not allowed on the bridge at present. Have a nice couple of days off ma'am."
"Thank you commander, Sonak out." Chagrined, she closed the connection to the bridge. She got herself some breakfast from the replicator, then set herself to write a message to MC7of9, before she would have to wake up the children and get them breakfast.
To: vice admiral MC7of9, Starbase Bellicose From: Commodore Sonak, USS Vesuvius
Dear MC7,
In about two hours, the Vesuvius will be docking at Starbase Bellicose. It would please me greatly if you would join me for lunch aboard the starbase.
At present I have been relieved of duty on medical grounds, thus I find myself with very little to do besides just roaming around on the ship.
Please let me know if you will be available.
Sonak reviewed her message and nodded when she was satisfied, then sent it off to the admiral. She hoped he would respond soon.
She sat back and pondered on how to inform him of recent events. As far as she knew, the logs still said they had not been anywhere, but her own injuries had proved that they had indeed been somewhere, as did the sand in the sensors.
"Sonak to McVaye, please report to my quarters," she suddenly said, feeling the urge to talk to the counselor. ~I must wake up Jatan~ she thought ~he has a right to know~ Softly, she walked back into the bedroom and sat on the bed, then kissed him gently. "Wake up sleepy," she whispered, prodding him in his side.
Instantly, Jatan was wide awake but as usual he opened just one eye to peer at her, a smile tugging at his mouth in response. "I'm awake," he said, "and I heard you call McVaye. I take it you wish a private conversation?"
Sonak shook her head. "No, I wish you to be present. There is something you should know, but I do not want you to act on it." Quietly, she explained to him what had happened on the planet, and she saw his face turn crimson in response. At last, he just wrapped his arms around her, but said nothing as she had asked him to do.
Only minutes after her call, someone rang the doorbell, requesting permission to come in. "Come," Sonak called, then whispered to Jatan to get dressed. She walked out of the bedroom and welcomed McVaye in. "Please have a seat, Jatan will be with us shortly. Have you had breakfast yet?"

With the ship now on it's way to Bellicose, Meylor finally had some free time to consider the strange events of the past several days. As the next shift took over on the Main Bridge and a junior officer relieved him at Ops, Meylor got up and headed for the Mess Hall in a daze of thought. Perhaps a little food will do me some good, he mused. But it was going to take more than food to ease his troubled mind.
Once the ship's position in normal space had been confirmed, and warning beacons placed in the sector where the black star had been discovered, operations soon returned to relative normalcy and subspace channels were free to use once again. Meylor had immediately sent out a communique to his mother on Andros, but he knew the reply might be some time in coming, if he was even available to receive it. Nevertheless, he had to know if his father was alright. That feeling, though not as overwhelming as it had been not long before now, was still with him intensely. His memory was much clearer, that much was certain, but exactly what had happened to the planet they had landed on, the people there, and the pervading nightmare of guilt he had felt the entire time they had spent in that...other place, he couldn't fathom. It seemed to have been triggered the moment he had read that desperate letter from his mother...a letter that, according to computer records never existed. Now that he could think clearly again, however, he realized that the feeling had started from the moment the female members of the away team had been captured. From that point, the feeling had only grown in sheer magnitude until...even now the memory disturbed him, but at least he could look at it rationally. The strange feeling of utter guilt, unlike any he had known before, had overtaken his every thought and action, and had driven him, with the craftiness and stealth of a madman, to attempt the theft of a shuttle from the Vesuvius.
Why? Meylor had wanted to escape, to do anything to ease the guilt. Wild ideas of charging in to rescue Sonak and Kanz, and then flying off to Andros to be with his dying father, to save him through force of will alone, dominated his being. Now, ever since leaving the other universe, he realized that he had been driven nearly insane, and had nearly killed himelf on a fool's errand in the process. Despite these realizations, though, many questions were left unanswered: was the message from his mother ever real? How far had he gone in satisfying his delusions? Physical reminders of how he had slit his wrists once, in a mad attempt to expell the unbeliveable guilt, remained and were the only clues to what had happened. Most of all, there was the nagging feeling of something important that had been totally blocked from his conscious mind.
Meylor stopped in the middle of the corridor leading to the Mess Hall. I've got to deal with this now, he decided. The best way to go about solving the problem was to enlist the aid of the ship's counselor. The memory of going insane, and the riddles posed by the experience, were going to drive him insane...again, unless he got help. Resolved in this, and with a coherent goal in mind, Meylor turned back to the turbolift and ordered it to take him to McVaye's office. Soon, he stood at the door, which McVaye answered with a weary greeting.

"Access to this room has been restricted."
Katia sighed, "Who is allowed in?"
"Commander L'Ola Kanz and Lieutenant Jason Carter."
"Great, another lab project I'm not allowed to see. Wilson to..."
The doors opened and Jason walked out. "Now why aren't I surprised to find you stood here?" He asked, rhetorically. He was treated to a glare. "Yes fine, we can talk. But not in there, the boss doesn't want to be disturbed."
They walked down the corridor until they got to Astrometrics. Once inside, Katia locked the door. "So I don't suppose I have to tell you again?"
Jason shook his head, "I don't know what happened, but I definitely remember you telling me. It makes things... interesting."
"INTERESTING? I don't think you quite understand, Jason. James doesn't even know that I'm pregnant. How do you think he's going to react when he finds out it's yours?" She had never screamed so loud before in her whole life.
"So you haven't told him yet then?"
She shook her head, sat down, and nearly burst into tears. "Part of me was hoping that it would be his kid and everything would be easy. But there was quite a large part of me that was pleased when the DNA results came through. Which is really wrong..." Katia put her head in her hands.
Jason didn't know what to do. He didn't want to look anywhere; he didn't want to not look anywhere. He wanted to say something, but he didn't know what to say. "Do you know what you're going to do?"
She looked up and slowly shook her head as tears started to fill her eyes. "I really don't know."
