It had only been about a week since his arrival, Marshal had so much to do in his new position as the Executive Officer of this starbase. His boss told him that he wanted for him to keep things organized, whatever that meant.
He had gone through the rosters of the training ships, looking at the individual personnel records of the instructors. He wanted to have a one on one talk with them when time permited. Cadets were his first priority, however, and a few had just arrived.
Picking up another PADD, Marshall looked for the names of the new arrivals. There was this Rick Forrester, a navigations cadet, and Kalix who wasn't quite sure what he wanted...it seemed. It was either science or security and tactical for him.
He figured he'd see what they were actually made of and tapped on his communicator. "Cadets Forrester and Kalix report to the XO one by one please. I'll take whoever gets here first, the other wait outside in the hall. Thank you!"
He placed the PADD down, went to his replicator, and retrieved himself a glass of orange juice while he waited for the first arrival.
OOC: Please make a nice post of your arrival and the receipt of this message, then report to my office. Thank you!

Kalix arrived he stopped before entering ,and thought to himself despite his mothers disappointment of him joining starfleet he was proud to be where he was this day. "Before my entering starfleet I had no future. I couldn't go to Romulus due to me being half Vulcan. The only thing I learned on Vulcan was how to suppress my emotions but sometimes my emotions show. Mother wanted me to enter the Vulcan science academy ,but i was not comfortable on Vulcan. So Starfleet was the only logical course of action." Standing outside pondering to himself Kalix realized that he was here because he was called.
He straighten his uniform and enters through the doors. "Cadet Kalix reporting as ordered sir."

The first one to arrive was the Vulcan, Kalix. Marshall let the cadet report in to him. He thought he heard a little apprehension in the cadet's voice, but he wasn't sure. If that was the case he was surpirsed that there seemed to be underlying some emotion there. Of course all Vulcans had them, but most surpressed their emotions, and very well at that.
"Go ahead and have a seat, Cadet Kalix. Now where did that PADD go again?" Marshal picked up two different PADDs before he had the correct one. "Ah...yes. It says here that you're not too sure yet on what position you want to train in. Tell you what, how about you tell me a little bit about yourself and why you joined Starfleet, and maybe together we can figure out what you want to do."
Marshal laid the PADD back down on his desk and looked at the cadet intently, waiting for him to start his life's recertation.

Kalix sat down and began to explain his background ,and why he joined Starfleet.
"I will start off by saying I am half Vulcan and half Romulan. The reason I join Starfleet is because I have no place on Vulcan. I followed the teachings on Vulcan , but I could not always suppress my emotions. The teachers would say i am illogical at times. My mother and I kept my Romulan half pretty much a secret. Only my mother , our doctor ,and myself knew of my Romulan side. I believe it is because of my Romulan half it is harder for me to suppress my emotions. I have been told by my mother at times that my Romulan arrogance tends to show. The reason I joined Starfleet is obvious I have no where else to go. I have read articles on Starfleet and it seemed logical to join. Even as a little child I have wanted to explore the galaxy. When I was on Vulcan I was isolated from everything and everyone when I reached my early teens as humans would say. I still have not decided what I would like to study. I was hoping to get some advice from anybody on what to study. I used to read about ambassador Spock when he joined Starfleet and everything he did. I suppose thats why I choose Science Officer. I am not sure why i choose Tactical Officer. Well sir as you asked why i joined and a little about my background."
Kalix sat and waited for a response.

~Wow...a lot of turmoil within this one...~ Marshall was thinking to himself as he listened to Kalix. When Kalix was done Marshall sat back in his chair and thought about what all had been said before he replied.
"Well, you have indeed come to the right place, Starfleet I mean. All are welcome and as you will soon see, we have quiet the variety of species around here from staright up pure to the varied mixed kind such as yourself. There won't be a need for you to hide your Romulan side here, or the Vulcan side for that matter."
Marshall sat back up in his chair and clasped his hands on his desk. "It looks to me like your Vulcan half is saying science while your Romulan side wants tactical and security. So I really don't know how to help you there. You can always train in one position and see if you like it or not, and if not opt for the other when it comes time for assignment. Better yet, once you know which ship you'll be assigned to...why don't you ask the Captain if you could train in both, maybe by the end of the training you'll have a better feel for either one."
Marshall rose and walked out infront of his desk and offered his hand for a shake. "Welcome to Starfleet and Section 47, just relax cadet and enjoy your time here. Now, there is a very good bakery somewhere on this station. I haven't been there myself yet, but I've already heard it's good. I think it was Tante Maria's, you should try that out. Alright then, go ahead and be on your way...dismissed."
OOC: I invite you to continue simming in the thread called "New Friends..." Have fun!

As Klang walked up to the door a Vulcan cadet walked out and past him. Klang just gave the cadet a look and turned back around. Klang walked into the door and announced himself.
"Cadet Klang reporting as ordered , sir."

~Klang...Klang? A Klingon?~ Marshall was rifling through the PADD in front of him trying to get some data on this new individual. Then he'd found it.
"Stand easy, cadet." The Klingon proudly stood there with his hands clasped behind his back while Marshall perused the data.
"I see...dishonored son, banned from the homeworld...hm!" Marshall didn't really care of Klingon politics. He just wanted to gauge the reactions of this Klingon. He watched him tense up a little bit.
"Expert in tactical and weapons systems. Good! We can definitely use you in that field. So tell me...your showing up Starfleet's door steps...that wouldn't have anything to do with what's happened to you back home, now would it?" Marshall knew the answer was yes, but there was a reason to his madness as he waited for the reply.

Cadet Sloan strode towards the XO's office and hearing voices, quietly closed the gap to the doorway to listen.
"...that wouldn't have anything to do with what's happened to you back home, now would it?" A voice spoke inquisitively from inside the room. A quick glance around the corner revealed a large Klingon standing with arms clasped behind him. Sam still couldn't see the XO, but didn't chance a look farther in. Instead, he opted to get the skinny on one of his fellow cadets.

"Yes it is the reason I am here!" Klang said with a hint of anger. Klang was not the type of Klingon to talk about his dishonor, but he realized by joining starfleet he would not be able to keep secrets. "I joined because I did not want to work on some cargo ship for the rest of my life. I may have a family name without honor, but I still have a sense of duty. I belong in space, in combat. Well, only when necessary, sir. This is the reason behind the reason, sir."
Klang stood with a stone look upon his face. He just couldn't wait to get onto the battle field. He waited for the XO to respond to his reasoning.

Marshall looked at the stone faced cadet, standing there with pride, not regretting the decisions he had made. Rising from his chair, Marshall walked over to the Klingon until he was standing next to him within earshot of his lowered voice.
"Cadet Klang, your family's name may have been stricken off the books by the Klingon High Council, but you will always have that honor of carrying it with pride."
Marshall walked around his back to the other side of the cadet, looking him up and down.
"And as I am sure your sense of duty would even do you justice on some cargo ship, I am glad that you have chosen to join us here at Starfleet."
Marshall returned to his seat as he punched in new data on his PADD.
"I welcome you to Section 47, dismissed. Send in the next cadet please."
OOC: Again, welcome! You may continue simming in the "New Friends" thred until your training ship assignment comes through.

Cadet Samuel Sloan sprung from the doorway as he heard the XO excuse Klang from the office.
"Your presence is requested in the office." He said gruffly, walking by.
"Aye aye," Sloan muttered under his breath, and then he stepped into the office. When he came in, the Lieutenant Colonel was finishing the notes on his PADD. He glanced up for a moment, and Sam's smile faded.
The Colonel looked to be in excellent shape and young, perhaps only about 30: but his eyes, even in that short moment, were much older. He carried himself casually, cordially, but like a man who had seen his share of combat. Sam shed any sense of amusement about the proceedings, and stood at attention.
"Cadet Samuel Sloan, reporting for duty as ordered, sir."

Marshall looked at the cadet long and hard. He quickly sized him as a kidder, a joker, the life of the party. At the moment he did have one good thing going for him, he had realized when to be serious as he stood there with his hand still in the salute position. "Stand at ease, cadet."
Marshall pulled up the young man's records as Sloan relaxed a bit. "Hm...Ireland. Excuse me, Northern Ireland." Marshall read on. "Engineering, that's good. It looks like you've excelled at all of the preliminaries in engineering. Tell me, how did you get started to be a tinkerer if you will?" Marshall sat back as he listened.

"A tinkerer, sir?" Sloan said rhetorically. The question was a complicated one. The XO looked at him patiently, but he expected an answer. Cadet Sloan stood, and considered. In his mind sentences sprung to mind. They were smooth sounding and clever, and he could prattle on for a few minutes about antique collections and his father giving him his first screw driver kit or his first plasma cutter; it would all be filler, nonsense, untruths.
His father had given him his first tool set when he was only 8, that much was true. And if it wasn't for the encouragement of his parents, he certainly wouldn't be who he was. But something about Stone's eyes told him that any story Sloan told would be met with a smile, a nod, and a complete lack of believability. This was no way to start his career in Starfleet, Sam thought, no way to turn over a new life.
"Early as I can recall," the Cadet said hoarsely, "machines just made more sense to me, Colonel. I don't want to wax poetic, but I find it easier to figure out a phaser emitter than a person's smile. Fact of the matter is, I like to explore the mystery in the machine more so than anything else."
Marshall Stone took in the Cadet's words with calm and deliberate stoicism. Samuel went on.
"Don't get me wrong. I get along fine with other people: And I can take orders as well as the next man. But my best place on any starship is engineer, that's for certain sir. Theres just something inexplicably...natural and calming about science and technology. I know I can't go wrong with it. As far back as I can recall, I was always taking things apart and putting them back together again. I'm just at a point now where I can do it without having any parts left over."

Marshall sensed the sincerity in the cadet's words. His words about machines rang true, they were easier to understand than any one single person or other sentient being. Machines didn't lie to you, they were always straight up.
A few punches on the PADD accepted the young cadet to the academy, awaiting his training assignment. "And I'm sure that if you had any parts left over it would be because you determined that they were no longer necessary." Marshall said with a smirk and a wink, upon which the cadet returned a small smile.
"Welcome and good luck. We need all the good officers we can get...dismissed."

Konal stood in front of the door, alerting Colonel Stone of her arrival.
"Come in, Cadet," he announced.
The door opened with a swoosh. "It's been a few years since I've been a cadet, but I'll come in anyway."
The marine, upon seeing the Cardassian, removed his feet from his desk. "Sorry Commander, with so many cadets coming through, I just assumed you were another. Would you like something to drink?" Stone made his way to the replicator.
"Another time, perhaps. I am actually here on business. She placed a padd on the desk. Stone picked it up with his free hand; his other hand holding his cup.
"Interesting." He took in all the information on the padd as the Commander continued to speak.
"I actually had to pull a few strings to get you this opportunity. I know you were always interested in this. And - while you are gone, I'll see to it that your office is kept in ship shape. What size is your chair?" She winked at him when she said it. They had only been working together for a few weeks, but they were already friends enough to joke.
"The padd says I would start immediately... How long would I be gone" he went back to the padd to dig for the answer. Upon finding it, he shrugged. "I assume it is alright with Admiral Drew?"
"I would assume so. If you look at the bottom, his signature is on it."
Konal gave a reassuring reply. "Don't worry - I can handle the incoming Cadets. I pretty much already do before sending them to you. The rest of the staff will chip in too. They always do."
Konal looked at the chronometer on the wall. "Oo! I need to get back to my quarters. I left my replicator on!" She scurried out of the office. "I'll come by every day or so to keep things tidy! Take care out there" the door swooshed behind her as she left, leaving the marine to pour over the padd again as he finished his beverage.
OOC: Lieutenant Colonel Stone is on a special assignment (LOA) until future notice due to real life events. Feel free to continue posting here, or in other threads... he'll be back soon enough, raring to go I'm sure.

Marshall entered his office and was not at all surprised to see Konal sitting there behind his desk. Dropping his dufflebag he headed straight for the replicator for something to drink. "Hey there, Konal. Been keeping busy?"
Konal looked up with a smile. "To be honest, no. The influx of cadets has given way to a bit of piece and quiet."
Marshall took a sip from the cool water he had requested for himself. "Oh really. That's good then. I was almost afraid that you would be swamped while I was gone."
Marshall noticed Konal looking at him with a perplexed look. "Swamped?"
"Oh, sorry. Overwhelmed. I'm glad you weren't though."
Konal stood up to relinquish the chair back to its rightful owner as Marshall accepted the offer and sat down in it. Then Konal spoke. "There is a new Vulcan running around here on the base, T'Dan. He has yet to report to this office."
Marshall picked up a PADD getting ready to look over the daily reports when something clicked. "Wait, you said T'Dan and 'he' in the same sentence. If I'm not mistaken isn't the 'T' before a vulcan name...uh...mainly of female gender...after they are married or something I think?"
Konal simply smiled as she headed to the door. "You are correct. I shall let 'HIM' explain that to you. Oh, and welcome back." Then she disappeared.
Marshall wasn't any smarter at the moment. He figured he better call for this cadet as he tapped on the com link of his terminal. "Cadet T'Dan, Lieutenant Stone here. Please report to the me in the XO's office. Thank you!"
<T'Dan>

The young cadet hoped she was in the right place this time. Having already proudly announcing that she was reporting for duty, only to find herself in the wrong office, she yelled out louder then neccesary, "Cadet Ainsleigh McLeod reporting for duty!", to the man behind the desk.

"Cadet Ainsleigh McLeod reporting for duty!"
Every now and then Marshall enjoyed leaving his door open as he liked to observe who passed by. He nearly jumped out of his seat as he looked up to see who the loud voice had belonged to.
To his surprise, there stood this diminutive girl. He was sure she was a young woman, but she just about looked like a girl to him. Not letting on that he was startled, Marshall picked up his PADD to see if she was on the list anywhere.
"Mcleod you say...must be Scotish I take it....hm. I don't see you on the list...must still be processing." Marshall put the PADD down. "So tell me, what position are you looking to be trained in? And don't yell it either, I'm not deaf." <Ainsleigh>

The Lt. had been correct in his assumption of her heritage, though it would take a linguist to hear the remnants of her Scottish brogue.
Taking control of her nerves, the petite red head lowered her voice, "Science Officer, Sir." Her mother's voice repeating in her head, 'indoor voice, indoor voice,'.
"My acceptance letter," she said as she handed over a PADD all the while noting the sparse personal items in the office. Making a snap judgement, he's new to this office.

Marshall looked at her personal PADD. Yup, there it was, her didgital acceptance letter. He pressed a few buttons causing it to be uploaded to his PADD.
He had noted how her little red head turned as she was sizing up his room, meaning she was sizing him up. Of course he was sizing her up as well, she looked like she might make a good science officer, the rest of her petite physique...well he just left it at that.
"Alright, good. Here you go then. The next ship won't be leaving for quite some days. Feel free to spend your time here on the starbase. Tante Maria's is a very popular gathering place, down on the promenade deck." He handed her PADD back to her. "Dismissed!"

Taking back her PADD, she affected a salute to the officer and turned and left as quickly as she'd entered. Once out of sight, she sighed, 'that didn't go to bad,' she thought.

Marshall was once again deep in thought when a new cadet walked into his office and reported in, handing him his PADD with orders and his bio information.
"I see you're here to train as a tactical officer. Good! We can never have enough security these days. So tell me, what brings you to our ranks here at Section 47?"
<Jon>
Marshall listened to his story while he signed off on the cadet's PADD.
"Interesting. Well, I hope your stay here is an enjoyable one. Welcome to Section 47...and good luck."
Marshall handed the PADD back to him before he dismissed him to be on his merry way.
