"As long as we have a few minutes, could you update me on Mr. Harper?"
"Well I've got him to agree to wearing a neurocortical monitor on the condition that he too sees the results its displaying. I don't really know why he wants to see them, but he is displaying some paranoia which could be a result of the sudden lack of drugs in his system or general worry about the seriousness of the situation, which by the way, I think has been blown totally out of proportion..."
<Tag Dixon>
"He'll come down to sickbay when all this is sorted out and have it fitted. We also have some of the drug he's been taking, Nurse Packer will analyse it with the help of Anderson when she's finished with Ensign Williams...we're going quite slowly at the moment I'm afriad..."

Alex looked over at Lt. BeTor. "I'm afraid I can't agree with your idea that the situation with Lt. Harper is out of proportion. Starfleet just ended a war not long ago with the Changelings, who proved capable of finding their way into the highest levels of our government undetected. I'm certain that the fact that there is an individual who is in the chain of command of a Starfleet vessel, yet has managed to conceal his race from Medical for many years will not make anyone at Starfleet Command cheerful. I'm sure that you'll have just as many curious officers from Medical breathing down your neck as I'll have from Starfleet Command. So, knowing that, what's your next step?"
E'Liana took a deep breath before replying. "He'll come down to sickbay when all this is sorted out and have it fitted. We also have some of the drug he's been taking, Nurse Packer will analyse it with the help of Anderson when she's finished with Ensign Williams...we're going quite slowly at the moment I'm afraid..."
The two of the entered the emergence access ladder and Alex started climbing up. They had to go up two decks, and he found himself a little winded once they reached the top. He hadn't been getting to the holodeck enough lately. Dr. BeTor seemed fine though, to his surprise.
"You'll have to go a bit faster doctor. I send a daily report of ship status to Starfleet, and I'll have to mention this. I'll try putting it into the addendum, so it might escape attention for a while, but eventually, someone will notice. I'll need answers for them when they call. You're the only one who can give them to me" Alex finished.
<tag Betor>
The two of them stepped onto Deck 3, only to hear the sounds of an altercation around the corner. Glancing at each other, the Captain and Doctor moved quickly towards the sound.

"I'd like you to detain her using the gentlest means possible. Make sure that she doesn't hurt herself or anyone else. The doctor and I are making our way there now. Dixon out."
"Commander Trek," Nathan called out to him. "The security team is ready. How do you wish us to proceed?"
Dan looked at Nathan's security arrangement. Such an arrangment would have stopped a turbolift full of armed Klingons. Somewhat of overkill, but at least they were prepared. "That's a good question. Any ideas Brine?"
"Do those turbolifts have an ventilation systems attached to them?" he asked. He was still focused on the door, and therefore Berraine.
"Unfortunately not. Otherwise I would have already flooded that thing with anesthezine by now." He then had an idea. "Can you lift her off levitate her off the ground like you did me?" he asked hopefully.
"Indeed I could, quite easily actually. She's considerably smaller than you. Though I'll have to be able to see her," he said.
"I can arrange that," he said, tapping his comm-badge. "Trek to Joktel. I want you establish a forcefield on the door of the turbolift. And after that, on my mark, be prepared to open the door, but leave the forcefield open.
They started hearing pounding from the other side of the door. Evidently Berraine was growing intolerant of the situation. After the field went up, it flashed briefly. Then, after a while, it started flashing again. Berraine was persistent.
"Ready Brine?" Dan asked. Brine nodded. "Joktel, open the doors," he said over the comm channel.
The door opened, and Berraine startled slightly, then glared at them. "Cardassian dogs! Let me out of here!" she said, still hitting the field.
Brine raised his hand, and his face tensed is concentration. Berraine stopped in surprise as she lifted off the ground. "What are you doing to me?! Let me down, Cardassian scum!"
"Joktel, be ready to lower the force field on my order," Dan said, then stepped forward. "Brine, keep focused on just keeping her off the ground. Stop when I indicate for you to do so," he said, then brought his own into play. Focusing, he uses his mental energy waves to push Berraine back away for the field, as she was still attempting to hit it. He pushed her back into the middle of the turbolift.
"Joktel, lower the field," he said. The field disappeared and Dan stepped in. Walking along the wall, attempting to avoid Berraine's flailing limbs, he went behind her. She kicked him in the stomach, but he kept going. He went forward, and wrapped his arms around the front of her. He nodded to Brine, and her weight went against him.
Struggling, he brought her out of the turbolift. "Well done, Brother," Brine said.
Dan then noticed that Alex and Doctor BeTor had arrived. Security came forward, and Dan put Berraine done.

"...but eventually, someone will notice. I'll need answers for them when they call. You're the only one who can give them to me" Said the Captain.
E'Liana nodded gravely and thought for a moment about how she was meant to get information about such a secretive species. Her thoughts were interupted however at the sound of an altercation. E'Liana looked at the Captain and they both hurried towards the sound.
She saw Berraine hovering in midair, suspended by Commander Trek and his brother. Although this was indeed a successful way to capture the cook, E'Liana didn't need a tricorder to know that this was making Berraine worse. She walked up to Berraine and tried to talk to her.
"Berraine...listen, do you remember me? We just met not long ago, I'm E'Liana." Whilst the other woman's eyes appeared to focus on her for a second, she soon began to thrash again. "Who has known her the longest?" She asked all those who were present. "I think it could help her mental state..."
<Tag anyone>
Just then, Berraine started screaming at the top of her voice, fighting to be freed. Hurridly, E'Liana scanned her. "Her blood pressure has gonethrough the roof and there appears to be something wrong with her neocortex. I'm going to sedate her and we have to get her to sickbay now."
She took out the one hypospray she had taken from Joy's kit and injected it into the woman's neck with some difficulty. After a few seconds, Berraine became limp. "We need to get to sickbay, I can't tell the full extent of whatever's wrong with her with just this." She said, holding up the medical tricorder.

Alex and E'Liana rounded the corner. There was a mass of security, along with Commander Trek, his brother and Lt. Harper. The door to the Turbolift was open and Alex could see Berraine. She was being restrained as gently as possible by Commander Trek, but she was still shouting anti-Cardassian slogans as if Bajor was still in the hands of the Cardassians.
Dixon stood to one side as the doctor quickly examined and tried to reason with Berraine. It was time to let an expert try to deal with the out of control cook. E'Liana attempted to gently talk the Bajoran out of her mental state, but she just seemed to be getting worse. Then the doctor asked "Who has known her the longest? "I think it could help her mental state..."
Alex looked around and said. "That would probably be me." He stepped forward and said "Berraine, it's Alex. Everything is all right. Take a careful look at the people around you. There are no Cardassians here. Just your friends."
Alex continued to talk gently to Berraine for several minutes, and after some time, he seemed to be getting through and things were becoming a bit more relaxed. Then suddenly, Berraine surged to the left, actually getting one of her arms free from one of the security people that was restraining her. The second managed to hang on but was dragged a bit before he managed to stop, and several more security people had to join in before she was back under control.
"You traitor!!" she spat at Alex. "You've given me away to them. Do you know what they're going to do to me?"
Alex shook his head, stepped away and turned to the doctor. "Dr. BeTor. This isn't the place to be doing this, and she seems to be getting worse. Get Berraine to sickbay and see what you can do for her."
She nodded and moved toward Berraine while scanning her with a tricorder. "Her blood pressure has gone through the roof and there appears to be something wrong with her neocortex. I'm going to sedate her and we have to get her to sickbay now." The doctor injected her with a hypospray and Berraine went limp. A medical team showed up with a gurney and the cook was placed gently aboard. The doctor quickly got the medical team moving.
Alex sighed as he watched them move out. He was worried about his friend, but felt that she was in capable hands. He looked around, expecting to have to tell the crew to return to their stations, but saw that Lt. Harper had efficiently gotten his people moving already. He watched quietly for a second. The Chief of Security was clearly in charge of his section, and there seemed to be no hesitation on the part of security in obeying him. Nathan was simply too good a chief of security to just give up.
Alex turned to Dan and General Brine. "I gather that the two of you used your mental abilities to capture her?" They nodded. "Thanks for your help. I'm sure that the two of you probably saved her from injuring herself and others."
<Dan Trek/General Brine>
"Bridge to Captain" the comm interrupted.
"Dixon here"
"Sir, we've arrived at Clovda 4."
"Alright, we'll be right up. Put us into standard orbit around the planet and contact the mining facility." He nodded at Dan and the General, indicating that they could both come to the bridge if they'd like, then made his way up.
Upon reaching the bridge, Alex took his chair. The station was on the main viewer. It looked to be business as usual. There was a particle cascade in operation, moving ore from the planet to the processing facilities aboard the station. There was one freighter receiving processed or by shuttle. "Sir, we have the station administrator, Brynn Ortagh on subspace."
Alex nodded. "Put him through." A human appeared on the main screen. "Administrator Ortagh. I'm Captain Alex Dixon, USS Raven. How can I help you?"
"They sent an Intrepid class?" the grizzled miner said in reply. "I alert Starfleet to a possible Romulan problem and they send a tiny ship like that? What are you going to do, throw stones at any Warbirds you see?"
Alex stubbornly retained his grin while thinking diplomatic Alex. Be diplomatic. "The Intrepid class vessel is one of the most advanced in Starfleet and it's primary mission is scouting and exploring. We are very capable of handling this problem, if you'll help me figure out what it is."
The Administator scoffed quietly, then said "Our sensors picked up a series of odd anomalies in the asteroid belt that is located between the fourth and fifth planets of this system. We don't have the capability to analyze the readings."
"All right Administrator. Can you upload everything that you have to us. We'll evaluate them, investigate the area and get back to you" Alex said. Ortagh nodded and entered some commands on his console. The Operations officer said "Data received."
"Thank you Adminstrator. Is there anything else we can do for you?" Alex asked. Ortagh shook his head, so Alex closed the channel. "Put the sensor readings up on the main viewer." A shot of the asteroid belt appeared. Everything was looking fairly usual, then several asteroids seemed to fade from view suddenly, then came back. The phenomenon seemed to last for a few minutes, then stopped. Alex had it replayed several times.
He looked around the bridge. "Any opinions?" There was silence. "Ok. Helm, take us to the section of the belt where this occurred. Red Alert, and start full sweeps with the short and long range sensors."

E'Liana got back to sickbay with Berraine in tow and thanked the Officers who had helped her get the Bajoran woman to sickbay and then they left. She nodded to Joy who was currently analysing the drug from Mr Harper but decided she should treat Berraine alone.
The now silent woman was lying on a biobed looking as though she was perfectly fine, but E'Liana could tell she was not. She scanned Berraine and found some rather shocking results. ~ These cannot be from just the food, surely?~ She thought.
She continued scanning Berraine and fixed some minor injuries which had been caused by the scuffle with Security. ~From what I can tell, it is a rather severe case of food poisioning. But can it really have reacted that badly with her?~ E'Liana had a hard time beliving anyone could react that badly to food, especially as she herself was so resilient.
Joy came to join her. "How's our new patient?" She asked, looking down at Berraine.
"She's fine for now." E'Liana replied. "From what I can tell she has just reacted very badly to the food. I'll check her file for anything else I should know about in a second. How's your research going?"
Joy sighed. "Well it's interesting to say the least. I think I've isolated the compound that made the drug undetectable but I haven't yet named it or discovered why he suddenly adapted to it..."
"I'll help you as soon as I'm finished with Berraine." The other woman nodded and went back to her work. E'Liana went into the office and looked up Berraine's medical file. ~ Nothing to report here...~ she thought dryly.
She looked at Berraine sleeping peacefully, and said. "Well, I know this is probably against everything you've been taught as a cook, but you're having a detox...it's not the only way I can get that stuff out of your system but it's by far the most effective. I'm gonna let you sleep this off for now but you're on a drip. Only fruit and water for two days missy...no drugs no nothing." She realised it was stupid to be talking to someone who couldn't hear, but she hoped Berraine wouldn't be too mad when she woke up.
Turning around to the office, E'Liana joined Nurse Packer. "Ok Joy, what have we got?"

Lieutenant Collaan looked at his sensor readings. "This is interesting," he said.
"Could you expound on that, Ms. Collaan?" Dan asked, looking over.
"Sorry, sir. It seems we have some unusual gravitational anamolies in the area. I'm not sure how to classify them. They've got a high density, yet are giving high-level radiation," she said, looking at his readings.
"Any idea of the cause?" Brine asked. Brine didn't usual dabble in scientific phenomena, but when it meant possible security threats, it got his attention quite quickly.
"Most likely has something to do with an antimatter cloud I'm reading moving away from the area. It's a low density, high velocity cloud, and on its current path, would have passed right through the anamolies we are now seeing."
"Does the radiation pose any risk to the ship or the crew?" Alex asked. The Captain's first concern was his crew.
"I don't believe so. Although I've never seen radiation quite like this before," she said, turning around as she said it.
"Keeping scanning, Lieutenant," Alex said. "We need to know exactly what we're dealing with."
"Aye sir," he said, and resumed studying it.
A few minutes later, suddenly the ship began to turn, moving away from the asteroid belt. Zoarial was focused on the Helm.
"Mr Zoarial, why are we moving away from the belt?" Dan asked. "We're supposed to be studying it."
"I know that sir," Zoarial responded. "But I'm not causing this. And I can't regain control. It keeps saying the Autopilot is overriding me."
The ship moved 10,000 kilometers away from the anamoly, and then stepped again.
Dan looked over at the Engineering station. "Joktel, what the heck just happened?"
"I'm not sure. I'm checking the logs to find the Computer's actions in this instance. Ah, here it is. It seems that the Autopilot saw the anamolies as a danger, and moved as away from it," Joktel said, studying the log.
"A flight response?" Brine observed. "That's odd. That's more typical of organic thinking than computing."
"Well," Dan said, "The driving force behind it is organic in a way, so I guess it logically follows."
"Still odd though," Joktel said.

Alex sat back in his chair, which didn't seem all that comfortable all of a sudden. He wondered how other captains would feel if their ships were making decisions for them. It made him uncomfortable. The computer algorithms may have made them safer, but his ship manuevering without orders was extremely unusual.
"Lt. Collaan, can you tell me why we didn't detect them before now?" Alex asked. "High radiation is usually detectable at long range."
The Science Officer looked up nervously. "I'm not really sure, sir. It's possible that the emitted radiation has a very high decay rate. That would reduce its' detectibility to the sensors."
Good answer, Alex thought to himself. Alex opened a channel to Engineering. "Bridge to Joktel. Is it possible to put up the processing algorithms of the gel packs on the main screen so that we can see what the ship might be doing if they take over?"
"I can sir," the chief Engineer replied, "but I hope that you've taken a speed reading course."
Dixon looked up at the speakers. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that information will fly by at the rate of hundreds of lines of code per second. Probably faster than it can be displayed, and certainly faster than anyone on the bridge can read it" Joktel declared.
"All right, bridge out." Alex returned his attention to the bridge and looked over at the Helm, about to issue an order. "Zoarial..." Suddenly, Alex' attention was drawn to the ship clock on the helm control. The captain realized it was still Dan's shift. Immediately, he turned to Dan. "Commander Trek, I just realized that it's still your duty shift on the bridge. Sorry about that. I think that I'll go down to Sickbay to see how Berraine and Ensign Williams are doing."

“Ok Joy, what have we got?”
“Hold this.” Joy handed her the sample she was currently working on and looked into the microscope. She then sighed and looked back at the Doctor.
“From what I can tell, this drug has human DNA in it…” The two women sat in the Office for quite some time working on the problem of a part Xindi crewman.
A while later, Captain Dixon came in. He came into the Office and nodded to the two women in greeting. “Report” He said to E’Liana. The Doctor replied. “I think we’ve cracked it, Sir, or at least as much as we can right now. We have decided that the human DNA Joy found in the solution has to be his mothers. It could be another relative of course but considering what Lieutenant Harper told me, it seems likely.”
She indicated to the microscope and Dixon looked through it.
“From what we can tell, her human DNA was used to in a sense replace his father’s alien DNA. It seems that the solution is a vector virus that introduces and maintains a spot mutation in his DNA; basically his mother's hiding his father's, making him look fully human.”
Dixon nodded slightly, thinking it over. He took a seat, as did E’Liana. Nurse Packer went to check on Berraine.
“On the occasions that he forgot to take the drug and his Xindi facial features appeared, this was his birth DNA reasserting itself but it was usually only the facial features that changed since these are the most apparent and also the easiest to change. By the time anything else would have altered, he would remember to take his medication…
However, since it’s a virus, his immune system eventually fought it off. From what we can see, the reason it took so long for his body to overcome the virus is because of an adaptive element within it.”
<Tag Dixon>
“I’m afraid this is as much detail I can get for now. Personally, I would recommend sending this on to Starfleet Medical. Their analysis equipment is far more sophisticated than what we have here…”

Zoarial began to dislike the gelpack-program again, it didn't really matter to him that it picked up raditation undetectable by the ships sensors. Zoarial knew from his training that sometimes you had to search for danger to be able to lose an opponent, in the best possible scenario even lure the enemy into the danger, and he couldn't have some auxiliary program get in his way. Zoarial turned in his chair to discuss the matter with Dan.
"Commander Trek," he began, "I've been thinking this program-thing over, and I have decided that I'd rather do the extra work myself than having a gelpack get into my way. Can we modify the program sothat it asks for verification before it takes any action?"
<<Dan>>
"We could either modify it, or I could rip the gelpack out myself. I'm sorry to say this sir but I'm seeing this program as a potential hazard to the lifes of our crew" Zoarial said, not being able to put it more positive.

"Commander Trek, I just realized that it's still your duty shift on the bridge. Sorry about that. I think that I'll go down to Sickbay to see how Berraine and Ensign Williams are doing."
"Aye sir," Dan said, and then moved over to the Captain's chair. He was doubly pleased. He was sitting next to Brine again.
Brine leaned over, and switched to their native tongue. You're worried about this radiation, Hzkl, he said.
Of course I am, Jzrk. The welfare of this crew is my primary concern, and the radiation is an unknown, he said, grateful that Brine had chosen their own tongue as the crew wouldnt be able to interpret it.
You've always relied too heavily on the computers and technology around you. You become nervous whenever it can't explain something, Brine observed.
Their conversation was cut off by Zoarial turning his chair around. "Commander Trek, I've been thinking this program-thing over, and I have decided that I'd rather do the extra work myself than having a gelpack get into my way. Can we modify the program so that it asks for verification before it takes any action?"
Dan looked over at the Chief Engineer. "What do you think, Joktel?" he asked.
"Well sir, I believe that verification would defeat the very purpose of the system. It's designed to detect and react to problems faster than any person could, no matter their reflexes."
"We could either modify it, or I could rip the gelpack out myself. I'm sorry to say this sir but I'm seeing this program as a potential hazard to the lifes of our crew," Zoarial said.
"The program has not yet done anything detrimental to the safety of this crew," Dan said. "Although its last action was unexpected, in my opinion it was serving its purpose quite well. If its actions do become a threat, I will re-evaluate my decision. Until then, the system stays in, with it's current programming."

Alex sat in his chair and listened as Dr. BeTor explained how Nathan had managed to hide his true origin for so long. It was ingenious.
"That might mean that Nathan's body has out-adapted the injections. The humanoid body adapts by itself and will naturally resist this kind of a change. He could probably do it again if he could find a new adaptive reagent that could be applied to the injections." Alex paused. "Not that there's a point to doing it anymore."
The doctor and nurse nodded. The cat was out of the bag now, so to speak.
"Do you think that there are any long term effects on Lt. Harper that we should be aware of?" Dixon asked, as Nurse Packer went to check on Berraine.
<Dr. BeTor>
"All right then. Please forward the results of your tests to me, and I'll include a referral to it in my daily report to Starfleet" Alex said.
"You're not going to include the results in your report?" BeTor asked curiously.
Alex sent a cautious glance towards where Nurse Packer had gone, then lowered his voice a little to be sure that only E'Liana could hear. "I'm not certain how important Starfleet may think the situation with Harper is. I'm merely including the minimum amount of information required by regulations in my report. Putting on a medical record may raise too many eyebrows."
BeTor raised one of her half-Klingon eyebrows. "That's not entirely honest, Captain."
Alex shrugged. "One of the reasons that Mr. Harper pursued this course was to avoid the attention it would cause him. I'm merely trying to continue that."

After the crazed cook had been contained Nathan congratulated the team on their effective handling of the situation, although a bit over the top.
"There will be a combat training session for Security detail two tomorrow in Holodeck 3. I want to see all of you there." Nathan said before the team disbanded and headed back to where ever they were stationed on the ship.
Nathan slowly made his way back to his quarters. He was visibly shaking and so was taking his time, so as not to fall or draw attention to himself.
When he eventually arrived in his quarters he locked the door and sat on the edge of his bed, cradling his arm.
"Computer, turn off lights." He ordered. He was immediately surrounded by darkness.
However he knew what he was looking for and from underneath the pillow he pulled out one of the hyposprays of medication and slowly pressed it against his neck.
The shaking stopped immediately, he sighed contently and stood to his feet.
"Computer bring lights to normal level and unlock the door." He said, the computer complied and Nathan headed for the bridge.

"Do you think that there are any long term effects on Lt. Harper that we should be aware of?" Dixon asked, as Nurse Packer went to check on Berraine.
"As far as I can tell right now, the only ill effects are those he will experience whilst his body adapts to relying purely on itself again. However, I am concerned about the slightly addictive effects of the drug. I am going to collect the rest of his supply soon, once Berraine is back on the mend. I'd suggest we keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't look too well right now, if you see what I mean..."
"All right then. Please forward the results of your tests to me, and I'll include a referral to it in my daily report to Starfleet" Alex said.
"You're not going to include the results in your report?" BeTor asked curiously.

"I'm not certain how important Starfleet may think the situation with Harper is. I'm merely including the minimum amount of information required by regulations in my report. E'Liana was surprised at her new Captain. ~There could be concequences for him if he lies~ "That's not entirely honest, Captain."
Alex shrugged. "One of the reasons that Mr. Harper pursued this course was to avoid the attention it would cause him. I'm merely trying to continue that."
"Indeed that is noble of you, sir, however we have not yet explored the full reasons for his hiding his heritage. We do not know his background. Yes, his father was Xindi, but WHO was he? Was he important on the Xindi homeworld? And his mother? Seems she went to extraordinary lengths to ensure no one discovered the truth...I'm not saying I don't trust him, but I think we need to explore all possible options. We need to have answers for Starfleet when they decide to question us, and they shall want to."
<Tag Dixon>
"Anyhow, I need to check on Berraine and I need to get Harper in here to get the neocortical monitor running. BeTor to Harper, please report to sickbay."

Alex sighed. "I know they will Commander, but right now I don't want a witch hunt started against my Tactical Officer. I agree with your point that we need to know more about his background and why this was all done, but I also don't want Harper tried and convicted by Starfleet before he has a chance to defend himself, then being offerred apologies later. People tend to remember the original accusation then don't notice if it's proven wrong." Alex stood up and started to pace a little around Sickbay. "There is still some paranoia floating around Starfleet regarding covert operatives. The Changelings showed us that even the most sophisticated security can be penetrated. I'd just like to try to see that Nathan is treated fairly."
Dr. BeTor thought for a minute or so, then nodded reluctanyly in agreement. "Anyhow, I need to check on Berraine and I need to get Harper in here to get the neocortical monitor running. BeTor to Harper, please report to sickbay."
Taking his cue to be on his way, Alex left Sickbay and went to his quarters. He needed some time to compose a very delicately worded daily report to Starfleet.
On the way, he thought that he would check and see what the status of the Raven was. Not wanting to step on Dan's toes, Alex decided to go to Stellar Cartography. It had been a while since he had been there anyway. Hopping onto the lift, he went to Deck 8 and entered the room. The familiar hum of computers greeted him. Ensign Carstairs was on duty, monitoring sensors and forwarding information to the bridge. He looked over then snapped to attention when he saw that the Captain had walked in.
"Sir, it's a surprise to see you here. What can I do for you?" the man asked.
Alex smiled back at the Ensign. He still hadn't quite gotten used to people coming to attention when he walked in a door. "I was just looking for an update as to what's going on right now and thought that I would come to the source, rather than go to the bridge." I also sort of miss being Chief Science Officer, Alex thought to himself.
Carstairs nodded and pulled up the scans of the area immediately surrounding the Raven. Alex watched the slow movement of the asteroids as they orbited their star. "Thank you, now put up the Raven's course and plot any objects that might pose a threat to the ship."
The Ensign nodded again and entered commands into his console then waited, frowning with puzzlement. Alex waited for a moment, then said "What's the problem?"
Carstairs looked up. "I'm having trouble getting course updates from the main computer." Alex took a console himself and the two of them tried to isolate the problem.
After a few minutes, Carstairs said "I think it's the gel pack algorithms. They're taking up a lot of computer resources. Must be because of the asteroids. It looks to me like the system is plotting all of the trajectories of the asteroids to see if any of them might pose a threat to us."
Alex nodded. That seemed to be a good explanation. Plotting the location and movement of thousands of asteroids must be a strain on the system. After another few seconds, the course of the Raven came up. It seemed that there were no direct threats to the ship right now. "All right, thanks for your help Ensign. Please contact Commander Joktel and inform him of your findings."
Carstairs nodded. Alex turned to leave as the Ensign contacted the Chief Engineering Officer.

"Astrometrics to Commander Joktel," came a male voice over the comm system.
The Chief Engineer tapped his comm-badge. "Go ahead, Carstairs," the Bolian said.
"Sir, I've been having a bit of a problem up here. The Computer was so busy calculating the trajectories of the asteroids around us that I'm having trouble getting to do what I need. Any way you can help me out?" he asked.
"Stand by, Ensign," he said, turning to his Assistant Chief Engineer." Any ideas, Paria?"
"Well," the Trill began, "We could comparmentalize the the computer's functions, give Astrometrics it's own seperate processing system. It does take alot computer power to run after all."
"Agreed, start working on it," he said. He then turned his attention back to the Ensign. "Carstairs, Lieutenant Paria's going to re-organize the Main Computer to give Astrometrics designated processors."
"Thank you, sir. That'll help quite a bit," Carstairs said.
--------------------------------Bridge-------------------------------
"Sir, Administrator Ortagh is hailing us," the Tactical Officer said. Lt Harper had not yet returned.
"Put him on screen," Dan said, standing. The man again appeared on the screen. "What can I do for you, Administrator?"
"I noticed your ship moved off from the anamolies a little while ago. Have you found anything dangerous?" he asked. He hid his concern well.
"We've found some unusual gravitational anamolies, and radiation that we're still analyzing, as we've never seen it before. As far as moving off, we're testing a new autopilot program. It interpreted the unknown radiation as a threat and moved us off," he explained.
"Interesting. Let me know when you have anything on the radiation. Ortagh out," he said, and the channel closed.
"Friendly fellow, isn't he," Brine commented.
Dan sat back down next to his brother. "Any thoughts?"
"He's suspicious, and doubtful of our abilities, from what I can see. And when you told him about the Autopilot, his expression changed ever so slightly. He isnt impressed that the computer did something that you didn't tell it to. He's probably slightly worried about the safety and well-being of his facility because of it."
All of a sudden, the ship started moving. Looking at the view-screen, Dan could see that the ship was turning slightly from side-to-side, about 15 degrees in each direction. "Zoarial, what's happening?" he asked the Helmsman.
"It's the Pa'taq autopilot system. I'm trying to override, but it won't let me. Attempting to switch to manual control," he forced out, concentrating on his task.
But just as quickly as it started, it stopped again. "Well done, Commander," Dan said to Zoarial.
"That wasn't me, sir," Zoarial said, turning slowly in his chair as he did.
Dan tapped the comm-circuit. "Trek to Captain Dixon. Could you come to the Bridge, sir?"

The turblift was fast approaching the Bridge when Nathan's comm badge chirped.
=^= BeTor to Harper, please report to sickbay =^=
Nathan tapped his comm badge. "Aknowledged. I am on my way." He said in response before altering the course of the turbolift.
A few minutes later and Nathan walked into Sickbay, it was practically empty and Nathan noticed that a few things had been moved around, it was good that Dr. BeTor was getting settled in.
"Ah, Lt. Over here please." She said motioning to a bio-bed which was usually used for surgical procedures.
BeTor saw Nathan's face and smiled. "Nothing to be concerned about, I promise." She said.
Nathan coughed and flushed. "I wasn't nervous or anything..." He said before sitting down. "How long will this take?" He asked. "I'm supposed to be on duty right now."

Alex had finished dictating his daily report. He had buried the information regarding Lt. Harper between the sections on interspatial dust density and local quantum radiation counts. He hoped that it was as boring for him to write as it was for everyone else to read. Hopefully, this would be the end of the matter as far as Starfleet was concerned. He packaged the entire thing up and sent it off to Starfleet Command with a sigh. As he was leaning back, the Raven abruptly went through a series of odd maneuvers, back and forth in an extremely unusual pattern.
The movement stopped. Alex's hand was heading for his comm badge when the chime went off. "Trek to Captain Dixon. Could you come to the Bridge, sir?"
"On my way Commander" Alex answered immediately and left his quarters for the bridge. He was there in less than a minute.
Alex stepped onto the bridge. Dan moved into the First Officers seat and the Captain sat in his chair. "Report" Alex said to Dan.
"It seems the gel pack algorithms decided to take the Raven on a little trip. There doesn't seem to be anything locally that would have caused any danger, but there were a series of sharp course changes" Dan replied.
"Interesting. Zoarial, all stop in case there actually is something out there. Dixon to Astrometrics."
"Astrometrics, Carstairs here."
"Ensign, run a high resolution short range scan of the area immediately around the Raven. Include an active tachyon pulse. Is there anything here that might conceivably been a threat to the ship or crew?" Alex asked. He waited impatiently as the scan was run.
Finally, Carstairs was finished. "Sorry sir, there doesn't seem to be anything around that would warrant the ships' changes in course."
Alex sighed. "Thanks. Bridge out. Zoarial, get us moving again." He looked around the bridge. "Anyone have an opinion?" There was relative silence, except for Zoarial muttering something in his native tongue. Dixon's ability to translate Klingon was pretty much limited to some popular curse phrases that he had picked up at the Academy, and he surprised himself by actually being able to figure out much of what Zoarial was saying.
"It's clear that there was no danger to the ship, even though we changed course?" Brine asked.
"Unless it's something beyond our ability to detect, but then the gel packs wouldn't know about them either" Alex replied.
"Then the test should end. If there are unknowns that could effect safety, then it should stop" Brine declared.
Alex sat and seriously thought about what Brine had said. He knew that the new system hadn't been tested very much so far. Brine's caution was warranted, but part of his job was to explore the unknown. This system would just go to someone else after some modification, so the time to test it was now. Alex trusted his ship and crew.
"Thank you General. I agree that caution is warranted, but the test will continue for now. Dan, take the ship to yellow alert and keep it there till further notice. Send all of the decision code the algorithms have created to Assailant and see if it's creators can figure out what's going on" Alex said.
<Dan Trek>
"Zoarial, go down to Engineering and see if you and Joktel can figure out some way to override the algorithms so we can get control of the ship if we need to" Alex continued. "I think that the controls for the gel packs have been routed through the primary Navigational junction box on Deck 10. Perhaps you can rewire the primary box or run a bypass through the secondary junction on Deck 12. Whatever you think is best."

E'Liana heard the doors swish open and made her way from the Office to the main sickbay. She saw Harper come in and smiled.
"Ah, Lieutenant. Over here please." and motioned to the bio bed.
Noticing that he looked worried, she saught to reassure him. "Nothing to be concerned about, I promise." She said.
Nathan coughed and flushed. "I wasn't nervous or anything..." He said before sitting down. "How long will this take?" He asked. "I'm supposed to be on duty right now."
She took out a tricorder and began scanning him. "Oh, it's nothing to worry about, It shouldn't take more than five minutes. The Captain knows I want to attach the monitor anyway. What I'm doing now -" She said, indicating the tricorder. "-Is merely doing a quick scan to make sure you're alright." E'Liana looked at the tricorder's readings and frowned for a moment, but quickly changed her expression.
"Is anything wrong?" The Lieutenant asked.
E'Liana fixed a smile on her face. "No, nothing..." And went to get the monitor.
She went back into the office and quickly checked the results of her scan against previous ones. ~Hmm...it seems Mr Harper isn't going cold turkey afterall...~ She mused to herself. She sighed and picked up the monitor and established a link between both it and the computer in her office.
Once back outside, she placed the monitor on his neck and told him that he needed to be on the Bridge and to send her a message where she would route the link through to him so that he can also see the results, although with a delay of about a minute.

"Also, Mr Harper, Nurse Packer and I need to run more tests on the drug you were given...I believe you said you had 2 more doses with you...could we have them for analysis please....?" She asked him, wondering if he would admit to using some of it already...

Nathan sat patiently while BeTor informed him of what he needed to do when he arrived on the Bridge.
"I think I can handle that Dr." He said more than a little impatiently. The Doctor was obviously used to this sort of thing and ignored the frustrated CTSO.
"Also, Mr Harper, Nurse Packer and I need to run more tests on the drug you were given...I believe you said you had 2 more doses with you...could we have them for analysis please....?"
Nathan froze. Immediately one thought popped into his head.
LIE
"I am afraid I disposed of the remaining medication Docotor. I didnt think it would be necesary anymore." He said, hoping he didnt convey any sign of a lie... no one could know he had more... he needed it...

(OOC: I believe you mean Starbase Assailant there, Alex ) "Dan, take the ship to yellow alert and keep it there till further notice. Send all of the decision code the algorithms have created to Assailant and see if it's creators can figure out what's going on," Alex ordered. "Aye sir. Tactical, take us to Yellow Alert," he said, and the pulsing lights went up around the Bridge. He turned to the Engineering station. Ensign Williams was currently manning it. "David, package up those relevant blocks of code. Remember that the Computer would have processing things much faster than the course changes happened, so you may need to skip over some sections," he said to the Engineer. After having been promoted to First Officer, he had become more accustomed to using ranks when dealing with the crew, but with his Engineers, he couldn't. He turned to Tactical again. "McAffrey, open a channel to Commander Szalai on Starbase Assailant." A few moments later, the aging man's face appeared. "What can I do for you, Commander? The test going well?" Dan shook his head. "Unfortunately not, Imre. Quirks have arisen in the system. A few minutes ago, it took action where there was no forseeable risk to the ship. It posed no additional risk to the ship, but still, it's acting outside its programming. We're preparing to send the relevant code to you now. I want your team to go over and give us some conjectures as to what's happening." "I'm ready, sir," Williams said, with impeccable timing. "Transmit then, Mr. Williams," he said. Szalai looked at another console. "I've got it. We'll look it over and let you know. Szalai out."

"Zoarial, go down to Engineering and see if you and Joktel can figure out some way to override the algorithms so we can get control of the ship if we need to" Alex said, and gave a short explanation about the situation.
Zoarial was glad that Alex did see the possible danger in the system, but he was sure that Dan thought about it in the same way after the Raven’s last bull-ride.
Humming as cheery as a klingon possibly can, Zoarial went down to deck 10 together with Joktel.
“So now we have to rewire a secondary bypass and run through Navigation to the primary junction on Deck 12?” Zoarial asked Joktel, trying to let it sound as good as Alex did when he explained the whole thing.
Joktel was able to surpress a snigger, he now fully understood why klingon officer wasn’t an engineer.
“I think that we have to try and rewire the primary box first” Joktel suggested, “it gives the least work and will probably be most effective.”
Zoarial nodded and he kneeled down before the panel that covered the Navigational junction box. Luckily it had handles on it, so he tried them. The hatch remained shut.
“Odd,” Joktel said, “I can’t remember locking this panel after installing the gel pack, but luckily I have a key with me, here you go.”
Joktel produced a key from his uniform and handed it to Zoarial.
Zoarial put the key in the lock, but was immideately thrown back by an electric jolt.
“Couldn’t you have warned me that the lock had some protection on it Lieutenant Commander?” Zoarial inquired, putting the emphasis on Lieutenant, because he was getting kind of agitated that this was already the third time in a short while that his image was damaged.
“I didn’t… it wasn’t commander!” Joktel said, not wanting a klingon on a rampage within 6 million kilometers. “At least it shouldn’t have been, let me see whether they’ll be able to fix it in engineering.”
Joktel tapped his commbadge. =/\= Lieutenant Commander Joktel to engineering, can you disable the security at the Navigational junction box on deck 10? =/\=
After a couple of seconds, the reply came. =/\= I am unable to disable it commander, I was almost there, but suddenly it seemed that only captain was allowed to access the necesary files. =/\=
Joktel thought about it for a couple of seconds, =/\= Odd, you would expect anyone to be able to turn a security field like this off, why would it suddenly require the captains permission? Thank you for your help, I’ll fix it here. Joktel out =/\=
Zoarial didn’t really follow the technical mish-mash but saw Joktel opening a panel to the right. “I don’t want to disturb the captain at the moment, so I’m performing an old trick in the book, disconnecting some cables needed for the field… That should do it… try it again.”
But again Zoarial got a shock when he tried to turn the key, forgetting that he could have just checked with his tricoder whether there was any electricity.
Joktel looked puzzled. “Ok commander, I want you to go to the helm, and attach this switch to the third gelpack from the left. I will go to the junction on deck 12 to try out the bypass. I would like you to flick the switch on my command. Would that be possible?”
Zoarial nodded, giving up any hope that he would be able to command Joktel on this matter.
It wasn’t that hard for Zoarial to do what he was told to do, so he sat down and waited patiently for Joktel’s order. Which came in a couple of minutes.
=/\=Ok commander, switch it off=/\=
Zoarial did so, and was glad that he had been of any help.
=/\=Did you already switch it off commander? Please do so now!=/\=
=/\=I did mr Joktel!=/\= Zoarial replied, wondering why Joktel couldn’t tell that something had happened.
=/\=As you might already have guessed, I ran a bypass through the junction here, by using the switch, you should have enabled the bypass, but it seemed to have no effect =/\= Joktel explained.
=/\=Ok lieutenant, thank you for the information, I’ll report to captain Dixon, Zoarial out=/\=
Zoarial tapped his commbadge, hoping that he would be able to give an accurate description about the situation.
=/\=Commander Zoarial to captain Dixon, it seems that the program doesn’t want to be switched off or bypassed=/\=

Harper looked E'Liana straight in the eye. "I am afraid I disposed of the remaining medication Docotor. I didnt think it would be necesary anymore."
E'Liana wasn't sure she believed him. "And why would you do that, Lieutenant? Nurse Packer and I are attempting to clear your name, afterall..."
<Tag Harper>
"Yes, well." E'Liana gave him a mild glare, deciding confrontation wasn't the best idea right now, she needed more information. "I suggest you get to your shift...Lieutenant. I shall connect you to the readings shortly." E'Liana nodded abruptly, turned and left.
~I don't have time for a drug-hunt, that insolent - ~ She thought, as she went to her Office to check up on the readings.
