Embarrassed, Veronica chirped back. "I didn't need saving." She blushed. It didn't matter, however, because Dr. Westgate didn't hear. He was busy chatting up the wait staff again.
"Operations. Not particularly my choice of profession, but I am willing to bet you'll have fun. From what Dr. w." she lowered her voice for a second "Dr. Westgate"... if he heard his name, he might start up again. "tells me that the crew was 'mighty fine as sure as latinum ain't gold'"
Sandy looked a bit confused. "Yeah, I don't get it completely either." Veronica said in response to the repose.
"What are you doing on the base?" the Cadet asked.
"Ah - I'm here on my way home to Earth." the sound of the word 'Earth' rekindled her longing to be home. She let out a sigh and continued.
"I was studying on another station... ran into a few problems, and had to stay a bit longer than expected, and now I have to get back to my dig."
The Cadet questioned her on the term 'dig'.
"Dig? oh - I forgot to tell you. I'm an anthropologist. We are currently digging the northern polar icecap. We uncovered some evidence of temporal disturbance. I had to s" The cadet was looking elsewhere.
"You don't want to hear this." Veronica smiled. She got so consumed in her work, she conveniently would forget that others didn't enjoy the same passions.
Realising the time, Veronica switched gears. "I'm going to head back to my quarters to see if my shuttle has arrived. Otherwise - I'll be around."
Veronica quickly said her goodbyes to Dr. Westgate, who tried captivating her into conversation, but she resisted and left the Cadet to fend for herself.

Joan had been called away from the bakery on business, and she sighed when she had to leave. She promised to return later, and hoped all three of those people would be there when she returned.
Joan returned several hours later to discover Veronica had left the group. She was glad the cadet was still around, and she approached her.
"Hello, cadet, Joan McCormick at your service. Good to see you are still around Westgate. Are we going to sit about the Bakery all day, or should we go do something?" Joan said wondering what they could all do and have fun with.

Westgate had continued to observe as the two cadets talked among themselves. Of course they would not be aware of his observations, as he continued talking with first one and then another soul who happened to come within his sphere of influence. Most of it was just prattle, practiced prattle, designed to put people at their ease. Occasionally, as the situation called for it, he was as warm and genuine as anyone, completely focused on the one to whom the warmth and genuineness was directed.
As he watched, one of the cadets, the saucy one with the slight attitude, rose and left. The other one, a Cadet Black, now took pains to concentrate on her food, apparently fearful, Westgate thought amusedly, that he would begin again. He chuckled to himself, thinking of the fragility of a Cadet's public face. Of course, generally speaking, they were all quite nervous--going on the most important cruise of their lives, fresh from the theories and less-practical aspects of Academy life, knowing, at least semi-consciously, that this cruise could be and sometimes was quite dangerous, and knowing also how deeply they might have to depend on seasoned officers to protect them, help them, and educate them all at the same time.
Cadet Black was an attractive young lady, and did not seem to have the gung-ho persona that some young cades did. That was usually a good sign, that she was perhaps more level-headed and flexible than those other types, and he had no doubt that she would make a fine officer. The saucy one, on the other hand, probably would make a fine officer too, but with more difficulty. Drama was in her life, an inflated sense of self-importance which would take some doing to modify.
A familiar face breezed into the bakery, the young ranking officer Westgate had mistaken earlier for a Cadet. She approached the table where Cadet Black sat, a smile on her face and her easy manner radiating out to embrace the young Cadet.
"Hello, cadet, Joan McCormick at your service. Good to see you are still around Westgate. Are we going to sit about the Bakery all day, or should we go do something?"
Cadet Black smiled, and so did Westgate. He was pleased that she remembered him, and was pleased as well that she thought to take this young one under her wing.
"Well," he said, "I was just a-thinkin' that very thing. We oughta get about, stretch them legs a little, see what the starbase has to offer. I'd be much honored and obliged to be the escort for two such fine ladies as yourselves. Miss McCormick, got anything in mind? Or mayhap the cadet, Miss Black, that is, has somethin' in particklar on her agenda for today?"

"Nope, I have nothing on for today, although I was considering going down to the holodeck to play tennis or somthing" Sandy said, smiling.
The truth was Sandy didn really want to do anything, she just wanted to rest after all she hadnt been on the station loNg at all, and although she had got a goos nights sleep by her standars, she really didnt havve the energy for much.
Mr Westgate looked at Miss McCormick, "So, a game of tennis is in order then" Mr Westgate said while turning his head round back toward Sandys position.
"We would need another person though, to have a game of doubles, unless we play winner stays on." Sandy said, but she wasnt sure how to play tennis , she was more of a Football fan, and enjoyed nothing more than to see old teams like Chelsea and Man City get a good thrashing at the hands of Man Utd.

Joan heard what was said and smiled. "I've never played Tennis before, so I would have to be instructed before we begin. I am sure I can round up another player if needed," she said and suddenly a big animal walked in on two legs. Joan smiled and shook her head. The animal was Joan's companion Leena. She usually disappeared and didn't come out of whereever she went for days. Joan worried at first, but then considered this normal behavior for her friend. Joan stood and realized Westgate offered his arm to both females, and she took it glad there was a gentleman still around even if it was only for a short time. "Leena, why don't you come along and play Tennis with us. We could both learn," Joan offered hoping her companion would come willingly. Leena glared at Joan and was about to move off. Joan noticed both instructor and cadet were eyeing her friend. She didn't understand what was wrong with Leena, and thought maybe it was because she was getting so fat. John reached Starbase Conqueror, it had been a long trip on a rickety old transport. He had hitched a ride to section 47 so he could have a look around with his surroundings before he was reassigned. Having spent several years working in StarFleet Research & Development across many sections and galaxies he was looking forward to his new challenge. He had taken a sabbatical year out from Research as he felt like his life had been taken over by research. His new assignment would afford him the time to do some research but also to work with budding new members of StarFleet and also to be back aboard a ship again.
Arriving in the space dock, John was pleasantly surprised at the unique design of Starbase Conqueror, with the space dock resembling an umbrella or dome like structure. John was staring at up at the space dock now from core decks below, what a magnificent design feat he thought. John was not in uniform as he was still technically on his sabbatical. This also meant he had not been assigned quarters on the Starbase, he spoke to the Starbase quartermaster who had assigned John some guest quarters on Deck 29. John was having some difficulty navigating his way to his temporary quarters, he stopped a young female officer on his way:
“Excuse me, could you direct me to Deck 29?” asked John
“If you just follow this corridor along, you will find a turbo lift which should take you up to Deck 29.” He listened intently to the young officer, then thanked her.
“Thank you for your help”, “No problem” came the reply. How embarrassing John thought, as he stepped into the turbolift.
“Deck 29 please”
The turbolift shot down to Deck 29, John exited the lift and entered the large corridor. Finding his room was not very difficult. John got there and slouched down on the bed, he had a meeting with Admiral Drew (The Academy Commandant) tomorrow. He was looking forward to it but right now he was hungry, John quickly left his quarters to look for a place to eat. John took the lift to Deck 24, he had heard of a famous Bakery called ‘Tante Maria’s’ apparently it came highly recommended.
Arriving outside the Bakery, the Bakery did not look spectacular but the what Bakery did John thought. John went inside – it was not particularly busy. He pulled out a PADD from his jacket pocket, it contained the deck plan of the Starbase. John was eager to have a look around and familiarise himself with his surroundings. While he waited to be served.

John ordered a cup of tea and a bagel from the old owner of the Bakey who introduced himself as Uncle Max. The tea and bagel arrived in almost record time, with the bagel still warm. John was impressed this place was as good as he had been told. 15 minutes later, having eaten his bagel and drank his tea he decided to see if he could track down the Academy Commandant, Admiral Paul Drew. Thanking Uncle Max as he left the fine Bakery – it was possibly the best bakery John had been in. It almost reminded him of the bakeries in his native Ireland back on earth. Searching for his PADD, he clicked the Admiral’s office on screen and it was on Deck 1. Placing his PADD back into his jacket pocket he proceeded to travel to Deck 1. Arriving at the Academy Commandant’s office door, John pushed the button to enter and signal to the Admiral that someone was waiting outside. The Admiral came to the door and greeted John personally, extending his hand which John shook vigorously. After spending approximately 30 minutes discussing what would be involved in his role and when he would officially start duty, Admiral Drew advised John to introduce himself to Captain TJ Edwards who would be his CO. Thanking the Admiral, John then searched his PADD again to find the quarters of Captain Edwards, there was no time like the present to introduce himself or so John thought. Having found his way to Captain Edwards quarters he pressed the door chime and waited for a response… OOC: For those interested John’s arrival story onto Starbase Conqueror continues in the Home is...(where the heart lies?) thread: section47.proboards18.com/index.cgi?board=SBCON&action=display&thread=1176236967

Kalen walked into the bakery. He had heard good things about this place and figured this would be a nice spot to get something to eat and more importantly partake in one of his favorite past times other than flying which was finding out information. Kalen took a table in the farthest corner, ordered a bagel and something to drink and then sat back and took in the scene of events happening around him.

The smells reached her before the sight of the the Tanta Marie Bakery did. Lucy's mouth started watering, the vision of a glazed twisted donut floating in front of her. Stepping eagerly inside, she made her way over to the counter.
She didn't see anything other then a fat, sweet donut waving to her yelling, "Pick me! Pick me!"
Pointing at it, Cadet Grey watched the proprietor carefully pick up her choice with tongs. Lucy swallowed her copious saliva and reached up to take the paper wrapped goodie. Trying not to appear too anxious, she took a bite and closed her eyes at the sweet, melting delicacy.
Walking to the fountain, she picked up a Star Fleet monogrammed cup, filled it with hot water then tucked a tagless tea bag into it. While it steeped, she found an empty table, sat, and slowly finished her donut.

Jason heard lots about the bakery when he arrived at the academy. He had some time so he decided to take a walk over. It wasnt long till he could smell the sent of freshed baked pastrys. He smiled as he inhaled. Making his way to the door he walked in.
Boy that smells great he thought
Jason walked up to the counter and looked at the many choices. He couldnt help but smile as he tried to choose.
"What can I get for you" asked the counter person
"Wow so many choices. How about a slice of boston creme and a cup of Irish Creme Coffee." he said
"Good Choice just give me a second I will have it right up." said the counter person
Jason smiled and nodded then he turned and looked around. He noticed another cadet enjoying a Glazed dounut. He then spun back around to get his food and drink then walked over to the table.
"Hi, My name is Jason and I was wondering if I could join you" asked Jason

Simon was glad when he got off the transport ship and onto the star base, he didn’t mind flying but hated those cramped transports. His schedule meeting with the commandant of this academy was a few hours away so Simon made his way to a bakery that he had heard the pilots talking about, entering the semi busy bakery he looked around and saw 3 cadets in the room, 2 had started talking to each other but one was staying to one side. Ordering a coffee and a bagel Simon watched the young man, when he had his bagel and coffee Simon made his way over to the cadet sitting in the corner.
“Is this seat taken?”
<Tag Kalen Sol>
“Thank you cadet, so you must be getting ready to leave on the next mission, what position will you be training in?
<Tag Kalen Sol>
“A navigator, a most needed person or we get no where do we not?” chuckling to himself he continued “anything you wish to ask me cadet, I do not bite”

Kayla had been wandering the Starbase for two weeks. It had been pretty uneventful. However, this time, walking into the bakery, she noticed that a rather large group of Cadets had gathered. She also noticed, that the majority of them were male. Her interest was immediately diverted.
Being only 19 years old, she was younger than most Cadets, lest they were geniuses. On Bajor, however, there were not too many people graduating the Academy at her age. And with the past that she had, her schooling was minimal. It was of the utmost importance she earn enough cash to... well... she would rather not think about her family circumstances. The point was, she needed latinum. She was currently on the Starbase looking for a work. Perhaps being a bartender would suit her. She had been a Dabo girl for almost a day on a different starbase, but was fired for smacking the hand of an advancing Klingon. The owner had the commandant of the starbase paid off and Kayla was lucky to only be forced to take the next transport out. Ferengi business owners didn't take kindly to abusing their highest-paying customers.
"Hi!" she said giddily. "My name is Kayla!" The Bajoran smiled at the Cadets, who were joined by an officer. The officer was a little too old for her taste, but the fact he was a Doctor overrode any preconception.
Another Doctor she didn't immediately see introduced himself as Dr. Westgate. He was a lot older, and altogether unattractive to the Bajoran whose voluptuous nose ridges rose cutely when she smiled politely in his direction. His inflection suggested he was uneducated, but his insignia and pips suggested otherwise. Starfleet had some pretty strange people.
"I hope I didn't interrupt." She said to the younger doctor, a Doctor Barnes. She extended her hand gently, at the same time turning her head to bat her eyelids at the Cadets. The only one who didn't seem impressed was the girl; young for a Cadet, but older than Kayla. She made a point to introduce herself to the girl as well. "I hope I didn't interrupt. I'll leave if you want." but Kayla sat down next to the Cadets and the Officers, clearly showing her intent to stay.
"Continue," she said. She looked pleasantly around the table. "I haven't been here very long, and I just enjoy the company."
The tip of her index finger went to her mouth as she giggled. The Cadets resumed their conversation, and Kayla slinked over to the counter to get herself an eclair, returning quickly. She didn't eat it, however. It would be cruel to her figure. She allowed it to sit in front of her for some time before offering it one of the others.

"Hi, My name is Jason and I was wondering if I could join you" asked Jason
"Sure!" Lucy said as she set her donut down and offered her hand. "I'm Lucy Grey. Gonna be in medical somewhere, I hope. Counseling or sickaby or even as the ship's dentist."

"You'd be surprised how the teeth get overlooked around Star Fleet. Most claim there's no time what with away missions and all. But, you know, even out on a battle field, there's a way to take care of your teeth." Pointing at the pastry in Jason's hand, "What's that?"
<tag Jason>
"Boston Creme," she said dreamily. "I'll try one of those next month. I get to indulge myself to 500 empty calories once every two weeks. But starting next week, we'll be real busy with classes. Don't know if there will be time after that."
<tag Jason>
"What position are you going for again? Afraid my mind was on my pastry."

Westgate pretty much nixed the idea of playing tennis, especially when that odd-looking creature arrived. It wasn't that he couldn't play--he'd maintained himself in pretty good condition even as he aged, and he had won some junior championships in his teens--it was just that he preferred to remain in the bakery, which had now become like a magnet for cadets and instructors alike, crawling, as it were, with StaFleet types in all sorts and conditions.
He had stopped for the moment his babbling in which he indulged to get people off their guard. He was intrigued by a young lady, cadet by the look of her, who had taken up residence with a delectable sweet at a table nearby. Others were settling in too, looking in his direction and then looking away, as if sitting with an old man was somehow repugnant to them. He fixed his gaze on the young woman, who happened to look up at the same time and smiled at him. Her eyes were a crystal blue, pure and unclouded. She had an air about her of extreme professionalism, and the way in which she handled her sweet was something to behold. It was like a treasure to her, something that pleased Westgate to no end.
He was about to speak when she was joined unceremoniously by another cadet, a young man who asked if he could grace her with his company. She seemed delighted, and soon they began talking together.
"I'm Lucy Grey,"she said. "Gonna be in medical somewhere, I hope. Counseling or sickaby or even as the ship's dentist."
Westgate was surprised to hear that. Although all ships had dentists, it was one of the more overlooked and unglamorous positions on the ship. Of course, with cadets, enthusiasm sometimes won out over commonly accepted truths, and, honestly, if she wanted to be a dentist, she certainly ought to be one. But she was trained in medical as well, something that endeared her to Westgate's heart.

Quite the young lady. Westgate made a mental note to talk with her really soon. He had a feeling she would be something really special.
"Well, if that don't beat all," he said in her direction. "A medical cadet. Nice to meet you, young lady. Westgate's the name. Counselor Insructor to the Hanson. Been a doctor more years than I can remember. Why, one time there was this pregnant lady, a-havin' a hard time with it, you know. Lived up in one o' them hollers, couldn't get there but by horseback and a-walkin' about ten mile. Awfullest trip ever was, by my reckonin'. Thorns, you know, a-grabbin' somethin' awful. This was in Dismal. Tennessee, that is."
Both cadets looked at him, like they weren't sure if he was kidding them or if they ought to listen. "Husband was out huntin' most o' the time, big buck gun and all. Weren't never home enough to take care of the Missus, so Westgate, kind soul and all, had to trudge up there couple times a week. Came near the birthin' and all, hadn't seen the husband for nigh on a couple of months. Busted in with his big buck gun and all, like to scared the daylights out o' me, him a-claimin' we was being indelicate and a-wavin' that there buck gun around. Westgate, he skedaddled on out o' there, a hustlin' back to Dismal. Dead doctor ain't no 'count hardly in them parts. Baby come on and that Missus, she claimed Westgate was the best doctor a-goin', named her boy Timothy. 'Awful good doctor', she says, 'awful good.' Weren't long after that I done took to the stars, you know. And that boy Timothy, he growed on up, become friends with my brother Earl Dean, and says his pappy still ain't sure who the father is. Keeps his gun ready just in case Westgate ever comes back."
Westgate finished his tale with a flourish and a laugh, and that young lady cadet caught the humor of it and laughed too.
Might be a right nice cruise, now.

The replicated eclair sat in front of the young woman. Kayla wondered why those eclairs were so special here anyway. She could replicate one back in her quarters.
What she didn't know, however, is that every place had their variation in recipe. If you order an eclair from your living quarters, you received Starfleet's representation of an eclair... not Tante Maria's. While it was still good... it wasn't good.
Of course, Kayla brushed off the whole concept of using base rations for pastries when one can do it for free at home. It was a frivolous necessity- which meant she enjoyed doing it even though it didn't make sense to her.
The conversation in front of her unfolded uneventfully. She tried a few times to gain attention of the male cadets, either by a batting of the eyelids, or by gently caressing her neck, but it was for naught. Dr. Westgate's story had them too enthralled, and Kayla grew bored.
An announcement interrupted the Doctor's story announcing the Hanson was ready to depart. The eyes of the Cadets lit up as they understood what that meant. Westgate urged the Cadets to stay until the finish of his story, but their eagerness preceded them, and they were already half way out of their seats before the Commander gave up, wiping his face with the napkin. It was something the sonic showers would take care of, or even a trip through the transporter, but Westgate was clearly more old-fashioned than that, and almost seemed to take pride in his inefficient mode of cleanliness.
Unfortunately, for Ms. Tiara, the call for the Cadets meant that her company would be lost. She asked them to keep in touch, but from their responses, she couldn't tell if they agreed out of politeness or out of sincerity.
"I suppose I should be moving along as well. I still need to look for a job. Tante wasn't hiring." It was the first time she let out a frown, albeit only a small one. Perking herself back up, "It's a big place. I'm sure I'll find something." In the meantime, however, she would not be buying many more eclairs. Her rations were low, and her latinum supply, of which she was in need at the moment - for personal reasons - was even lower. She would have to have more restraint until employment was found.
"Good luck on your mission, boys...," she winked, ".. oh, and girls," she winked in the female Cadet's direction as well.
She envied the Cadets, who seemed to have their life in order. Had she had better schooling while younger, and not been in so much trouble as a teenager, she probably could be on the same path. For now, however, she would have to be happy being a third class citizen aboard a rather large starbase. Hopefully the Cadets knew how lucky they really were.

Lucy wiped at her eyes, clearing the laughter-tears away. "Was that a true story, Dr. Westgate?"
<Westgate>
Laughing again, Lucy nodded briskly. "Okay. I believe you. I bet if we had an emergency right here, you would take care of everything. I'm a doctor but you wouldn't even need me."
<Westgate>/<Anyone>
"I met Dr. McCoy once. He gave a lecture and Grams took me. My Gramps is Vice Admiral Ben Grey. He said it might help me decide to join Star Fleet. Anyway, after the lecture, Dr. McCoy pointed out several of us to come up just to sit and talk."
Lucy ducked her head shyly. She hadn't meant to tell that story. It just came out of her. Why couldn't she stop volunteering information? She'd rather be aloof... mysterious... But, no, she would get caught up in whatever was going on and blurt things out.
Sighing, Lucy looked directly at Dr. Westgate and smiled, her eyes lighting up when he smiled back.

John waltzed into the Bakery, he really wanted a Chocolate Éclair and had been dreaming about one all day. He was now in his duty uniform and was preparing to have a look round the Hepta but he thought he would pop into the Bakery for a quick snack. He was eager to see the extent of the reparations on the Hepta, Captain Edwards mentioned it to him at dinner the evening before.
Having a look around the Bakery was full of people, he noticed a young female Cadet laughing with an older gentleman. By the looks of the gentleman it was Dr Westgate, a Counsellor – Bah John was not fond of Counsellors. He’d have to sit somewhere else. It was then he noticed Simon Barnes a fellow instructor on the Hepta sitting with a young Cadet. Shuffling across to the table he nudged Simon, he had only met him once previously but he seemed like a nice fellow.
“Simon, you and your companion don’t mind if I join you, do yee?” John asked Simon
<Simon>
“Thank you, and who might you be?” John enquired staring at Kalen
<Kalen>
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Cadet, I’m John McFarland. Engineering Instructor aboard the Hepta.”
Just then, Uncle Max came over to take John’s order. John answered “Can I have one of those delicious looking chocolate éclairs on the counter? And a cup of Tetley tea please.”
“So, Simon I was thinking of checking out the Hepta. She is undergoing some repairs right now but I was wanting to check it out anyways. You want to come along?”

The place was rather empty today, which was just as Kayla wanted. Feeling a bit down on her luck, after being denied job offering after job offering, was starting to show some wear on the barely teen-aged adult.
"I guess I'll have an eclair" she said to Tante Maria. The eclair was the favorite of many passers-by, most notably Admiral McCormick. The sign on the wall said so, in promotion of it. The statement below, "So good, an Admiral cannot resist," implied it was worth the extra replicator rations.
Fumbling with the eclair after she received it, she sat considering if she were going to eat it. Her figure... her livelihood until recently, would suffer. A few more days of bad luck on the employment search, and a few more days of eclairs in compunction, she could count her Dabo-girl days over. Not that it mattered much, as none of the venues on the Starbase had a Dabo table. She originally counted that as a blessing, by now Kayla was starting to think it was a ruination. Being attractive was something she was good at. She wasn't ready for the level of academics presented on Starbase Conqueror due to S47 Academy having headquarters located there.
Which led her to her next thought. *Why didn't I pay more attention in parochial school?* Of course, the answer was played in her mind as quickly as the question was asked. The boys, at that age, did not show the signs of being tied down to a particular career. Holo-deck parties, Interstellar cruises... all the popular craze. Those who studied their days away in search of something more were labeled as boring, or prudes... of which, were labels Tiana Kayla did not not want applied to her. If only she had a positive male role model. Her father..., *Kayla sighed at the thought*, ... was still being held prisoner, and she was his only hope for being sprung. If only she could acquire enough Latinum.
All of her friends, within the last five or so years, have become focused on their careers... their families... their lives. If only Kayla had not insisted on being such a wild girl, perhaps there would have been more for her than searching on a Starbase for a job; a job most likely below most of those who were present on the Starbase.
She saw the courses being ran on the Starbase. She was not smart enough to attend. Science 101, by an Starfleet Officer Penfold, seemed like a great course- but Kayla already had trouble with Calculus of Differential Equations, a course taught when one was nine years old. The topic of modern science would be way over her head, and instead of admitting it, she would rather wallow in self pity- at a bakery- on the Starbase- with an Eclair.

Joan was feeling a little blue. Her mother was still away, and she hated not hearing from her. Things were rough at this time, and Joan was feeling very lonely. She entered the bakery hoping Maria could help her feel better.
Joan walked up to the counter and waited her turn. Maria smiled when spying Joan.
"Hello, young lady, what can I get for you today? Why so glum?" the lady behind the counter said reading Joan easy enough.
"I just miss mom. I would like a boston creme and a cup of hot cocoa," she said making Maria smile a little. The woman got the order ready quickly.
"I hope this helps then. If not you come back, and I will do my best to remedy your feelings, not that I can do much," Maria said and Joan nodded before leaving with her food. She wondered where to sit and noticed a lady sitting alone. ~No one sits alone if I can help it.~ She thought moving over to where the lady sat.
"Hello, I'm Joan McCormick, may I join you?" she said still holding her cup of cocoa and donught.

Leo stepped off of the shuttle craft and looked around, After a year on earth, it was nice to be back in space, especially on such a starbase. Leo made his way out of the landing bay, and down the hall to the turbo lifts.
"Please Specify your destination." stated the computer as he stepped onto the turbo lift
"Uh...Wheres the primary social hub on starbase" asked Leo, he didn't want to go to his quarters, but he wasn't familiar enough with the starbase to know where else to go.
"The Central Promenade" stated the computer
"Ok, take me there" said Leo, and the turbo lift started upward toward the promenade. After a several second trip the doors slid open and Leo stepped out into a bustling social center, shops, cafes, bars, and more. After looking around a bit he spotted a small bakery that looked promising, he made his way over to it. The doors slid open and Leo stepped into a nice calm little bakery, which was practically silent compared to the bustle outside. He walked over to the counter, and looked around at the goods in a glass case.
"Can I help you young man?" said who must have been the owner
"Ah yes, could I get a...Just a cup of Earl Grey...Hot please" said Leo
"Of course, Black, Green, or Spiced?" asked the owner
"I'm sorry?" said Leo, quite puzzled by what she just said
"Your Tea...would you like the Black, Green, or Spiced version" she explained
"Oh, Black I guess" said Leo, he didn't know there were so many different kinds.
"of course dear" said the owner " Green uniform...you wouldn't happen to be a marine now would you?"
"Yes Ma'am" said Leo
"Whats your name Marine?" she asked
"Leo...Uh, Tolkien" said Leo
"Leo...Thats a nice name...short for anything" she asked
"Yes, Ma'am, Leonidas" said Leo
"Odd name...how did you come across that name?" she asked
"My father was kind of a history nut" said Leo smiling slightly
"Hist...Oh yes...Leonidas of Sparta" she said
"How did you..." began Leo
"Lets just say your father isn't the only history nut you know now" she said
"Heh...What about you?" said Leo
"What about me?" she asked
"Whats your name?" asked Leo
"Marie" she said with a smile "Heres your tea, feel free to sit anywhere you like"
"Oh, thank you" said Leo accepting his tea, which smelled very good in his opinion.
"See you later Leo" said Marie
"See you" said Leo, and he turned and made for an empty table against the wall.

Angel had a day off from her sons since their grandparents were in the area. She loved her boys but knew it was good to just be by herself once in awhile. She wasn't sure what to do with her time.
She took the turbolift to the promenade thinking about doing some shopping, but unfortunately the last meal had been skipped. After hearing her stomach, she looked around for something good settling on the Bakery.
Angel entered and got her food - a bear claw and a mug of apple juice. Looking around for a seat she noticed a young man sitting by himself. She walked over and stood by where he sat carefully holding her items not desiring to lose them in any way.
"Hello there, may I join you?" she said hoping he wouldn't mind the company.

Leo was looking out the window with his legs folded and with his back to the counter, he was sipping on his tea every now and then.
"Hello there, may I join you?" said a female voice from behind him, he turned his head to see a commander standing there holding a bear claw and an amber liquid he would have mistaken with some kind of liquor if he didn't have a very keen sense of smell, judging by the fact he couldn't smell it he figured it was some kind of Juice, Apple most likely.
"Of course" said Leo turning to face her as she sat down across the table from him "So, Commander, What makes you want to sit with a Cadet like me?"

*If only she knew how bad those were for you* the young Bajoran thought to herself. A bear claw alone was probably more than Kayla had eaten all day... and the e'claire was still sitting in front of her begging for a bite. She poked around at as she spoke.
"Hello, Ms. McCormick." She was wearing pips, but Kayla didn't pay attention much to the Starfleet Rank system. She couldn't tell an Admiral from a Lieutenant, aside from the change in ambiance in the room when an Admiral was present. "Tiara Kayla." She gave her hand, loosely with palm down, to Joan. "my friends call me Kayla."
As she spoke, a young man walked into the room. He was dressed as a Cadet, which was very clear to Kayla. Scouting officers based on their pip number was not a pastime, but Cadets- she knew the Cadet ranks by heart. They tend to be closer in age to her. It was a function of her indiscriminate attitude toward men.
Joan continued in conversation as the young Cadet sat down, alone. The Bajoran girl kept enough eye contact with Joan to limit the amount of awkwardness in conversation between them, but was more intent on keeping her gaze on the older man, who was at least 24, perhaps even 25 years.
"I'm between jobs right now," she told Joan, when asked. A woman sat down with the Cadet. Darn, the cadet was already with someone. With that pursuit seemingly over, Joan McCormick had the luxury of receiving Kayla's full attention.
"You wouldn't happen to know where I can get a job around here? Tante isn't hiring... None of the places on the starbase, currently. Could you put in a good word for me?" Kayla let out a beautiful smile. A smile that anyone with an eye for beauty could appreciate, and want to help.
"Do you want the rest of this?" she asked Joan, pushing the plate of e'clair toward the officer. "I think I'm finished." She waved her hand over it signaling that she wished for someone to take it away before she were tempted to eat more.

"You looked lonely, besides I don't like it when people sit alone. My name is Angel Reynolds, and please don't worry about using my rank. What brings you to our section of space?" she said before taking a bite of her pastry.
(Leo)
"Interesting, well its always good to have more people around. We could always use good officers. What is it that you like to do for fun?" she asked remembering she hadn't really had time for 'fun' recently.
