Earth Transport Ship SS Eos, Hanaran Sector. Captain Lucien Garret paced on his bridge restlessly, of course he didn't believe that the Hanaran Sector was haunted... yes, four ships had disappeared there in the past year but Lucien felt it was far more likely that the nebulae in the area were being used as cover for pirates. He was however worried, his knew ship was a ripe target with a hold full of cargo. So far things had gone smoothly on this trip and they were on time for their rendezvous. Suddenly, the ship shuddered and Lucien felt an unnatural hum through the deckplates. He heard his second officer yell "The engines, they're..." He turned seemingly through a treacly haze and saw the officer slumped over her console. His thought was to try to help her but he never got to act on that thought. Instead he too slumped unconscious to the deck. What Lucien Garret did not know and now never would; was that his entire crew was unconscious and that without their swift action the Eos herself was doomed to oblivion. ***************************************************** USS Excalibur, Starbase Delta "...Commander Ryat I am therefore promoting you to the rank of Captain and requesting that you take command of the Excalibur and take her to the Hanaran sector to investigate this. I am aware that you have lost several members of senior staff recently but I read the reports of how you took command after Captain Santos's collapse and I have faith in your abilities. Good Luck Captain." Admiral Foster said. "Aye, sir" Aly said. The comm channel closed and Aly was left staring at the blank screen. 'How could this have happened?' she wondered to herself. She had known that the Excalibur would have to have a new Captain, Ephrem Santos had been transferred to the starbase's medical facilities but so far the cause of his collapse and coma had not been found, however; she had had no idea that she was in the running for the job. First Trill Captain in Starfleet was hardly keeping a low profile. Aly wondered what the Symbiosis Commission would say when they heard that one. And she still had to talk to Thalin (and possibly the rest of the senior staff) about Trill in general - not a conversation she was looking forward too. She paced in her quarters and stared at her reflection in the mirror, the Excalibur had just taken on new uniforms and Aly had not got used to her comms one yet, now she needed another new uniform. She wondered if she would recognise herself. She also wondered what the rest of the Excalibur crew would make of her promotion and new assignment... She felt very nervous and also curiously elated. She opened a comm channel all the members of senior staff. Asking them to meet in the Excalibur's briefing room in two hours. She then sent a message through the station asking for the crew to report back as the Excalibur would be shipping out in three hours. She then sat down to read what little information there was on the Hanaran sector before the meeting. Two Hours Later Aly walked into the briefing room, she hadn't felt this nervous since her final Symbiosis Commission Examination. She settled into a chair and waited. Tag: All

Science Officer's Log, Supplemental
I have been able to situate myself into the position of Chief Science Officer quite easily, and find this vessel to be every bit as fine as my previous assignment. I am making these comments as we finish up our mission on the Argo world. In fact, considering how much more modern it is, I dare say that it is a better ship than my last. It is interesting how different manufacturing techniques can be in only a few years. And to consider I used to serve aboard even more primitive facilities...this is marvelous.
Having said this, I have again presented a call to the United Federation of Planets to give the go ahead to an unmanned exploration program considering I have a bit of time now that the mission is over with. For the price of one full starship, one could launch a multitude of unmanned probes. Due to subspace radio modulation, one could continue to gather data from them years after their creation. Furthermore, a warp seven probe that never needs to halt its progress can traverse a greater distance than even this Constitution class vessel.
This having been said, there is no reason that I cannot conduct a great deal of fine research while I am here. I am not at all lamenting of this - I wish for nothing more than to live amongst the stars. It is obvious with the conclusion of this mission that there is still much to be learned.

Savin had taken Caelir out of his quarters, taking a brief tour of the ship, exploring and making note of any possible overdue maintenance for his staff to see to. He took mental notes of his observations, to transfer to a data disk as soon as he was able to.
Caelir mewed, struggling in his arms as he wanted to be set down and run free. Unfortunately, Savin was of another mind, but resettled the feline in his arms. "Not now," he murmured to his pet as he walked into the recreation room. Quietly, he walked over to the food dispenser, inserted a disk into the slot and retrieved his lunch. He felt fortunate that someone actually heeded the vegetarian diet of some of the Excalibur crewmembers; Savin was certain he was hardly the only one around.
The Vulcan sat alone at his table, undisturbed by the crewmember around them. Quietly, he observed them while tending to his food, feeding his cat tidbits from a seperate tray. Fortunately, the feline remained seated on the table, quietly lashing part of his tail as he devoured the offered treats.
When the call came to report for a briefing, Savin picked up the last part of his sandwich in one hand, fully intentional of finishing during the briefing, while picking up the cat with the other. Such, he walked into the briefingroom and took his seat, depositing the cat on his lap. "Captain Ryat, I do believe we have not yet met. My name is Savin and I am your chief engineer. I must apologise for bringing food into your briefing but as I suffer a certain medical condition it is vital that I see to my diet and provide myself with sufficient sustenance so I do not fall ill. I also apologise for bringing my cat, but I had no time to go past my quarters to deliver him home. I assure you, he will not be a hindrance to your meeting, nor will my eating habits be."
Longwinded as ever, the Vulcan sat back, one hand resting on Caelir, while he took a bite of his sandwich, carefully chewing, then swallowing while his eyes never left the Trill captain. He took a while pondering on her species, as she appeared unusual and unique.

Kavrin was unsure of what was happening around him at times, finally after almost a week the doctors had agreed that his body was finally working as it should to sustain himself and Los. Kavrin looked around, the heavily packed cargo bay where he was crouching was quiet too quiet, slowly he moved up to get to the top of a pile of crates that he was crouching next to but his climb was made all the more difficult as he tried to keep his phasser in hand. Kavrin could not help but think of the communication he was due to be receiving in an hour, after the doctors finally released him completely he had decided then that he should speak to the commission, eventually they would have found out about his exposure and with Aly there they would have had both of their heads, at least this way he could get the blame placed squarely on his head and not Aly’s. Finally reaching the top he looked over the top to see another figure moving around near the base of the creates, Kavrin watched as the figure moved carefully so as not to make a sound, completely unaware that someone was watching. Kavrin knew there were two others in here somewhere but for now he knew he had one spotted, aiming his phasser he shot a weak yellow beam that hit the figure clean in the back. Kavrin quickly leaned back so as to hide himself from sight from below, he did not fear return fire from the man he had shot as he would know he was out and would make his way out of the cargo bay, but the other two may have seen or heard the shot.
Several minutes passed as Kavrin moved around the cargo bay and successfully hit the second person in the bay, as he left Kavrin was about to begin the hunt for the remaining person he thought he would easily be able to deal with her, as he began to move and turn he found her standing right in front of him with her phasser pointed directly at him. Kavrin watched without moving a muscle, after a few seconds she smiled and spoke “hmm, i believe that makes me the winner” Kavrin could not help but smile, “yes i believe it does, and for that remark i would like you to make three laps of deck 4, then go to cargo bay 1, all without use of the turbo lifts.” Kavrin did not wait for her to realise that she would first have to climb 6 decks to reach deck 4 from here then return the same way, making his way out to the rest of the security officers that had been slowly eliminated by this training exercise “ok everyone, i want you all to gather at cargo bay 1 in 5 minutes” Kavrin watched as they all went in different directions, some going straight there, others going off to spend the five minutes away from the group. Since the ships arrival at the base, Kavrin had been running training exercise after training exercise, and while most thought he was just trying to be a dictator the real reason had eluded them all, he was looking to name his assistant chief.
As everyone arrived, he noted that the Lieutenant was not present yet, but she would be soon and not too pleased with her last work out. “everyone get in line, NOW!” as if they just realised he was there they all fell into line and stood to attention, “Okay everyone, listen up, you have all done very well in the exercises, i know that they have been hard on you all” Kavrin heard some mumbling but he allowed it “Now before i let you all leave for the rest of our time on this base to do as you will, i want to inform you the reason i have been so tough on you all. During these many sessions today and yesterday i have been looking at you all looking for a new Assistant Chief of security, after a lot of time and effort i have reached a decision and the new ...” at that moment lieutenant Lawren ran though the door panting “Assistant Chief of Security is Lieutenant Junior Grade Janice Lawren.” Kavrin watched as everyone looked at Janice in shock, she herself looked completely confused. Kavrin moved over to her and whispered “it helps to say something, the new acso should not be so easily tongue tied” Kavrin smiled as he turned to stand next to her. “ummm, i ah well thank you commander for this, i will try my best, and with a team that we have, i doubt there will be much we cannot do” Kavrin almost feel over laughing, that last bit had gotten everyone cheering with agreement. “Right, everyone, i do not want to see your sorry mugs again until shore leave is done” Kavrin walked out with the rest of the officer, but instead of heading to the airlock that connected the ship to the base Kavrin made his way to his quarters and his doom.
As Kavrin entered his quarters he noted that the paperwork he had to have done by today was still on his table, but he did not stop to work on it, instead he went to the communications terminal in his quarters and requested a channel be opened to Trill. Kavrin did not have to wait long until he was with the person he needed to speak to “Director, this is Kavrin Los, are you receiving me clearly” Kavrin waited until he heard the familiar voice of the man who had been his docent so long ago now, “I am sorry to inform you, but i disobeyed what orders you had given me, i joined Starfleet as a human, and i have now had to reveal my full nature to those on my ship, another trill by the name of Alyana Ryat helped the crew though this issue that resulted in this truth being told ...” Kavrin continued to explain everything, he even learned from the director that Aly was joined herself, something he was very interested in knowing why she had not told him. As the conversation went on Kavrin noted the time and remember that Aly had called a briefing that was due to start in 20 minutes, “Director, i am going to have to cut this short, is there anything i should know now before i cut to channel?” Kavrin waited for the order to return to trill that he knew would be coming. “Well i see no reason to call you back, your life and Los’ life were in danger and so what you did was perfectly reasonable, the only order i am going to give is that you and Miss Ryat find a way to keep this information from spilling out everywhere if you can” “Thank you sir, i will try my best” Kavrin could not help but feel he had sounded like a school child in that last comment but he needed to get ready for the briefing.
Arriving at the location of the briefing Kavrin noted that the new CEO was present and eating in a briefing. Moving to take his normal seat Kavrin noted that Aly seemed nervous. As the engineer officer seemed busy eating Kavrin leaned over to speak to Aly “Spoke to the commission not more than half an hour ago, we are fine, though they wish us to try and minimise the leak as possible.” Kavrin noted that she did not seem to relax so he guessed it was not the situation that he had created during their last mission. “Commander Ryat, is something the matter?” Kavrin spoke more clearly so that the Vulcan would listen as well, he thought he might need the back up.

Aly sat in the briefing room waiting, the CEO walked in with a half eaten sandwich in one hand and small feline in the other. Aly was, to say the least puzzled. The animal looked like nothing Zedan had ever seen on Vulcan.
"I also regret that we did not meet before now, Savin. Please don't worry about the food or the cat. He seems a most intriguing creature where is he from?"

Aly knew there was no way that she was going to pass comment on illness given her own 'medical condition'.
Kavrin arrived moments later, he passed her on the way to his seat. “Spoke to the commission not more than half an hour ago, we are fine, though they wish us to try and minimise the leak as possible.” Aly gave a slightly wan smile, at least they weren't going to be exiled... The knot of tension in her neck did not release. “Commander Ryat, is something the matter?” Aly gave a genuine smile at that.
"You could indeed say that something is the matter." She paused wondering for a second where to start. "As you are aware Captain Santos has been transferred to Starbase Delta's medical facilities. The doctors have not yet been able to determine what is wrong with him and Starfleet Command has decided to assign a new Captain to the Excalibur, me" She paused letting that sink in, she wasn't sure if it was news to Savin but it certainly was to the CSO.

"As for the rest I should wait until Commander Zarath arrives..."
At that moment the Andorian science officer arrived at the briefing.

Savin waited until Los and Zarath were seated, before answering the captain's question. "Caelir is an Earth feline," he explained, finishing the last piece of his lunch, "he was a gift from my bondmate and my son."
He wasn't surprised when Ryat revealed that she was assigned as Excalibur's commanding officer on a permanent basis. Indeed, surprise was an emotion, though it was one he permitted himself to experience openly where needed. "May I offer my congratulations on your promotion captain," he spoke evenly, inclining his head slightly towards her, but not offering her his hand to shake.
The Vulcan listened as the captain explained their new orders. "Do we know what type of freighter has gone missing, or whether there is any pirate activity in the region?" he asked, arching one eyebrow to indicate his interest in the situation. When there was no answer, he found himself forced to clarify. "What were these transports carrying," he added, "was it anything of value to anyone in the region?"
To him, it sounded like a stupid question, but one that had to be asked anyway. "Is there a pattern to their disappearance, and have the previous transports been recovered at any time, in any condition? Were distress signals recovered?"

Aly sighed silently as she watched her senior staff consider the problem ahead of them. She was relieved that the announcement of the shift in command had apparently no created any waves. "Do we know what type of freighter has gone missing, or whether there is any pirate activity in the region?" Savin asked, arching one eyebrow to indicate his interest in the situation. When there was no answer, he found himself forced to clarify. "What were these transports carrying," he added, "was it anything of value to anyone in the region? Is there a pattern to their disappearance, and have the previous transports been recovered at any time, in any condition? Were distress signals recovered?"Aly replied without having to look down at her notes. "The missing ships are two Dawn class the SS Eos and the SS Aurora, one Stellar class SS Arcturus and one Naiad class SS Melite. As to their disappearances the Eos vanished two days ago, the Melite four weeks ago, the Aurora twelve weeks ago and the Acrturus just over six months ago." OOC: I have made all these classes up but basically each is about 200m long with a crew of about 50. Feel free to have fun with details if you want "There have been rumours of pirates in the Hanaran sector, the whole area is full of various gaseous phenomena that limit sensor range. The Aurora was carrying Topaline ore, the Eos was carrying various spare parts for a mining colony, and the Arcturus was carryingv Tritanium ore. The Melite had just dropped her cargo at Herus II and was apparently travelling with empty holds." Aly looked at the engineer and science officer. "Can you two look in to what could be created with those materials." Tag: Thalin / Savin "None of the ships sent a distress call and in all cases the alarm was only raised when the ship failed to make their rendezvous. No wreckage has been found although the nebulae have been hampering search efforts. The Hanaran sector is on a rapidly growing trade route which is why starfleet has become involved." Aly looked round the table to see if there were any further questions. Tag: All When there were no further questions to her answered Aly swallowed hard. This was the difficult part. "There is also something personal that I need to tell all of you. I was ordered to keep this secret but events of our last mission made it necessary for you all to know. As you are aware I am a Trill, as is Commander Los. Our race has always been secretive, a small faction of our people are chosen to be 'joined', to host a long-lived symbiont. I was born Alyana Feldan and Ryat is the name of my symbiont." There was silence for a moment then... Tag: All, I imagine there will be questions

At that moment the Andorian science officer arrived at the briefing.
Thalin Zarath nodded carefully to those gathered around him, questioning to himself what exactly was going on. He had not completely been attested to the brief as of yet, but technically, none of them had. The last mission was, fortunately, a success and none of them were killed in it. That was generally how he measured success - when the command staff did not get blown to Kingdom Come, then the mission in question was certainly not a failed one. If the mission objectives got completed, and no one was a coward in their completion, then the mission was even that much more successful.
"Now that we're all here I shall continue, as well as assigning me to the Captaincy Starfleet Command has asked us to investigate the Hanaran Sector. Four Earth transports have disappeared there in the past year the latest just two days ago.
Standing in the proper fashion ascribed by Starfleet, though seldom followed by most officers, Thalin Zarath nodded politely to the new commanding officer and gave a short clapping motion, "Congratulations are in order, Captain. This is indeed a great accomplishment for you and for Starfleet."
"There have been rumors of pirates in the Hanaran sector, the whole area is full of various gaseous phenomena that limit sensor range. The Aurora was carrying Topaline ore, the Eos was carrying various spare parts for a mining colony, and the Arcturus was carrying Tritanium ore. The Melite had just dropped her cargo at Herus II and was apparently travelling with empty holds." Aly looked at the engineer and science officer. "Can you two look in to what could be created with those materials."
The Andorian stood again, nodding to her, "If I may please speak for a moment, I could tell you a bit about the piracy operations in the area. These pirates prey on whatever, ahem, deals they can get. Their craft is piecemeal. They have numerous vessels from a variety of spacefaring civilizations. One might contend, initially, that this makes them weak. In some ways it does, and they cannot find spare parts. However, this also lends them to not being traced - and gives a good incentive to some lesser commanding officers to believe they have a tighter defense then the pirates. Needless to say, those officers have been robbed of their lives."
"None of the ships sent a distress call and in all cases the alarm was only raised when the ship failed to make their rendezvous. No wreckage has been found although the nebulae have been hampering search efforts. The Hanaran sector is on a rapidly growing trade route which is why starfleet has become involved."
Zarath raised his brow again, "Well, that, and the fact that Starfleet has a requirement to protect the sovereign common citizens of the United Federation of Planets."

Savin nodded in agreement, momentarily distracted by the sleeping and purring feline in his lap. "I shall endeavour to keep our shields and weapons operational," he promised, rather unnecessarily. "I have already drilled the engineering team in rotating as swiftly as possible, should a key-post became vacant due to injury and I myself am of course available to assist as well."
His eyes met the captain, allowing a hint of curiosity in them as he gazed at her. "I already believed you to be an unusual species ma'am," he readily admitted, "I have never seen a Trill before, but I do admit I am ... eager ... to learn more about them. As I am certain the chief medical officer might be?"
The Vulcan too, rose to his feet, lifting Caelir up with him. "With your permission, I shall return my pet to my quarters and resume my duties in engineering." He glanced over at Zarath. "Perhaps you could assist me in optimalising the shield matrices?" he queried.

"As you are aware Captain Santos has been transferred to Star base Delta's medical facilities. The doctors have not yet been able to determine what is wrong with him and Starfleet Command has decided to assign a new Captain to the Excalibur, me" Kavrin was not surprised by this, he was well aware of the captain being removed from active duty and he also knew that half his security officers had written to the base commander recommending Alyana as the best candidate for the captaincy, he could understand their reasoning behind it after her excellent work during the battle in the cave. “Congratulations Captain, just remember that if i say duck, i really do mean duck” Kavrin thought of his first assignment where his captain had not ducked as Kavrin shot and ended up being hit by the phasser blast. As the andorian science officer entered the room Alyana finally began the briefing.
Kavrin listened intently as Alyana gave the briefing, Kavrin was mildly shocked by the number of disappearances but had heard of worse in the past. Before Kavrin could ask the usual security questions Savin spoke "Do we know what type of freighter has gone missing, or whether there is any pirate activity in the region?" he asked, arching one eyebrow to indicate his interest in the situation.
Were distress signals recovered?" Kavrin gave the engineer a look, he had never expected those sort of questions from an engineer but then maybe he had a security background ‘i will have to look into that’ Alyana looked down at her notes before responding "The missing ships are two Dawn class the SS Eos and the SS Aurora, one Stellar class SS Arcturus and one Naiad class SS Melite. As to their disappearances the Eos vanished two days ago, the Melite four weeks ago, the Aurora twelve weeks ago and the Acrturus just over six months ago.” Kavrin listened carefully, the dates told him there was no pattern there but that did not mean there was no pattern to the disappearances. "There have been rumours of pirates in the Hanaran sector, the whole area is full of various gaseous phenomena that limit sensor range. "Can you two look in to what could be created with those materials? None of the ships sent a distress call and in all cases the alarm was only raised when the ship failed to make their rendezvous. No wreckage has been found although the nebulae have been hampering search efforts. The Hanaran sector is on a rapidly growing trade route which is why Starfleet has become involved."
Aly looked round the table to see if there were any further questions. Kavrin thought carefully, the cargo made little sense to him so he left that hoping if there was something there the others would think of it so he began thinking about the ships themselves, the first three were normal transport ships, nothing really fancy about them and nothing to him memory that would stand out from a security stand point, but the last one, the Naiad class was well known to him, it was an old transport ship that while it was slow it had certain sections of its hull that smugglers liked to use as they were next to impossible to scan and trying to open them up ran the risk of creating a hull breach. But he knew that one ship that may or may not be a smugglers ship was not a reason for three ships before it to be taken. Kavrin noted he should mention this to Alyana after the briefing and so listened as she spoke again "There is also something personal that I need to tell all of you. I was ordered to keep this secret but events of our last mission made it necessary for you all to know. As you are aware I am a Trill, as is Commander Los. Our race has always been secretive, a small fraction of our people are chosen to be 'joined', to host a long-lived symbiont. I was born Alyana Feldan and Ryat is the name of my symbiont." Kavrin was mildly shocked to hear her tell the senior staff, he hoped she knew what she was doing, Kavrin took into account what Thalin had said about the pirates, he was very much correct on their state of technologies and ships, but he was underestimating the pirates to say they prayed on lesser captains as they were never that picky. As Savin moved to leave Kavrin decided to add the knowledge about the ship “I should point out now that i recognise the Naiad class of ship, it is well known as a smugglers dream, so even if it has dropped off its registered cargo we cannot assume the ship was empty”.
<Tag All>
As everyone began to leave, having their own departments to ready Kavrin made his way down to his quarters where he found Lieutenant Lawren waiting for him with another Lieutenant standing next to her that he did not recognise “Lieutenants, what can i do for you?” Lawren quickly opened her mouth so that she could do what she needed to do and go to her quarters, Kavrin knew she liked to feed her pet around now “Sir, all security staff are on board, and this one is a late add on, now i have to run before i have half my quarters eaten” Kavrin smiled and gave her a quick nod to say she could go “Well lieutenant, report in then” the slightly younger lieutenant snapped to attention “Lieutenant Russell Davis, Field Medic and Security officer reporting in sir” Kavrin liked the idea he had a security medic on board, made things easier during training sessions to avoid sending people to sickbay. “Welcome on board Russell, please find your quarters then check your duty time, i do not expect you to be late” Kavrin watched the lieutenant move away before Kavrin walked into his quarters to pick up the reports he had not finished to work on while he was on the bridge.

He glanced over at Zarath. "Perhaps you could assist me in optimalising the shield matrices?" he queried.
Zarath nodded carefully, cautious as to what he said. Sighing to himself, he nodded, "I would very much like to engage in such an operation with you. However, I am not sure what more can be done. Sadly, our shields are built to the most exacting standards that they could be. Therefore, they would most likely be the most optimized system that they could be. Yet...I am sure with our combined ingenuity, there is nothing that could not be done. I could probably tell some story or make some obscure reference, in the manner that any usual Starfleet science officer would do it. However, this time, I am going to spare you that portion of my council. Instead, I will simply offer the idea that I will do what I can."
“I should point out now that i recognise the Naiad class of ship, it is well known as a smugglers dream, so even if it has dropped off its registered cargo we cannot assume the ship was empty”.
The Andorian looked up again, his antennae moving slightly at the mention of the vessel. Standing to speak in the polite manner, he looked about those whom he was addressing, "If I would be allowed to add anything to this, I would seriously like to say that there are no published defense briefs on the condition. This makes it all the more dangerous, because we simply do not realize what we are getting into. The Naiad Class is simply an elusive ship, and I am unaware of any intelligence that has been formally collected on it. Therefore, we should proceed with extreme caution.”
Zarath paused, continuing a moment later.
“It could very well be, for instance, that they have captured and assimilated some sort of technology that is heretofore undiscovered by Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets as an embodied organization.”

"Do you have specifications on that vessel Mr Los?" Savin enquired evenly, "I shall be interested in studying their engineering protocols, so that we may prepare this vessel to fight them off before they see a chance to board us."
The Vulcan turned to the Trill captain. "That is of course, assuming that you wish to repel them and do not intend to give them a chance to board us?" He arched an eyebrow as he stared at her. "Or did you intend for them to make off with the Excalibur, so that we may lure them into a trap and capture them?"
He dearly hoped not. "Mr Zarath, I shall await you in engineering. I must return to my duties now, and prepare this vessel so that we have maximum speed within the least required time frame." He bowed lightly. "I do not intend for us to be without engines, however should the need arise, we shall be ready to shut down the warpcore. It will take them at least three hours to restart the engines, once they have cooled off."
Picking the cat up, Savin rose to his feet again. "Additionally, if Mr Zarath is correct, and they have indeed assimilated different technology that renders them undetectable to us, perhaps I should assist Mr Zarath in finetuning our sensors?"

Aly sat in silence at the briefing listening to her crew debating smugglers and sensor modification. She had dropped her bombshells but the other members of the senior staff had skated past them and were concentrating on the mission. Aly wasn't sure whether to be relieved or struck with a massive sense of anti-climax. “I should point out now that i recognise the Naiad class of ship, it is well known as a smugglers dream, so even if it has dropped off its registered cargo we cannot assume the ship was empty”. Kavrin said Aly's thoughts had been along similar lines but she was mildly curious where her security chief had picked up such information, his tone of voice suggested a story attached to it.
"That is of course, assuming that you wish to repel them and do not intend to give them a chance to board us?" He arched an eyebrow as he stared at her. "Or did you intend for them to make off with the Excalibur, so that we may lure them into a trap and capture them?"
Aly gave a wry smile. "Starfleet has only just given me this ship, I don't want to lose her on my first mission so while using her as bait may be an option I'd rather wait until we know more about the situation first."
Savin and Thalin were going to work on engine and sensor modifications and Kavrin was coming up with anti-pirate strategies. Aly was left to sit in her chair on the bridge watching the roiling mass of gases coming ever closer. The yellows, greens and blues were quite pretty if you didn't know of the mysteries associated with them as it was Aly had a cold feeling in the pit of her stomach they were only 15 minutes away from the edge of the nebulae now no doubt soon would start to get answers.
She turned to look at Commander Zarath. "How are the sensors Commander? Anything unusual so far?" She knew he would have told her if there were but she was finding it hard to sit quiet and do nothing.

The Andorian sighed to himself quietly, thinking about the case that she had brought up. Frowning carefully, he looked about as he was suddenly lost in though about the sensors as though he were a child in an infantile daydream. In actuality, it was symptomatic of him keeping track of raw sensor data in his head, as opposed to allowing the computer to handle these complicated calculations.
As was with most science officers in Starfleet, there was some quirk or estrangement that set him apart from the rest of the crew; that quirk was besides, of course, the obvious physiological difference between him and the crew. After all, he was an Andorian in a sea of humanity. However, he was also one who preferred to bypass the ship’s software and trust his own calculations.
“No, no Captain. There are no anomalous readings, which is in fact very much an anomaly considering what we should be expecting here I am sure you realize.”
The abovementioned Andorian exhaled noisily, heaving a sigh from his maw. Soon attending to the turbolift, the aforesaid science officer moved to join the other in engineering as soon as possible. That being said, he most certainly did not forget to bow politely to his commanding officer. As he exited the turbolift, he finally had a chance to step out onto this deck.
It was not often that he was able to visit the area, but never the less, he now was going to. Looking about slowly, he tried to think about the required task at hand. It was certainly not an easily device to concern one with, but the modifications needed to be complete. If only he had a data slate, he thought, and time. Time was of the essence, as it always seemed to be. There was never enough time to complete any of these missions.

Aly gave a wry smile. "Very well, Commander."
The Science Officer left the bridge heading for engineering, the Excalibur headed on into the roiling gas clouds. Aly spared one glance to Commander Los at the security station but otherwise her eyes were fixed to the viewscreen.
"Lieutenant Henderson," Aly addressed the duty helm officer. "Bring us to 500 kilometres into the nebula on the Eos's last known heading and then bring us to a relative stop."
"Aye, sir. Relative stop 500 kilometers inside the nebula"
Aly looked at the Assistant Science Officer would had quickly taken Thalin's place. "Mr Zarok, How long for a detailed scan of this area?"

Savin walked briskly across the upper engineering deck, inspecting the structure that held the base of the pylons that made up the warp engine. "Good work crewman," he praised the maintenance officer charged with making sure they were structurally sound.
He saw a streak of blue and white enter engineering from the corner of his eyes. "Check the engines, then report back," he instructed the maintenance engineer, "the intermix flow is still off by zero point zero seven percent."
"Yes sir," the engineer answered dutifully, before returning his concentration back to his tasks.
"Head for my office commander," Savin called down to the Andorian science chief, "I shall be with you in a moment." He headed for the steps that led to the lower engineering level and swiftly slid down them. For a moment, he ducked under the impulse drive, holding out his tricorder to take a few scans. Nodding in satisfaction, he headed for the office.
"Thank you for your swift attendance commander," he started, gesturing towards a seat. He held out a data disk towards Zarath. "These are the shield matrices, but I have had little luck optimalising them. I would value your input, as you are obviously more experienced in this than I."
The Vulcan gestured back towards his precious engines. "My field is warp mechanics, but I would like to learn more about other fields. This seems like a good opportunity to do so, would you not agree?"
Light eyes settled on the Andorian, holding a bemused look as Savin arched a single eyebrow in question. "If we are running the risk to become under attack, we should anticipate all flaws. Shield response is already slow, I believe we should start by allowing for a swifter load and cycle of frequency. What are your suggestions?"

Kavrin was reading a few reports as he made his way back to the bridge, he felt he had made a good choice with his new assistant as she had quickly dealt with most of the minor problems and had only left more major stuff for him, ‘just the way i like it’. Kavrin was reading though one report to find that one of the squads that usually dealt with the engineering level were having problems with members of the engineering crew, something about them not wanting security near to engineering while we were not on red alert. Kavrin decided to leave that one alone for now as he had no doubt that Aly would have them on red alert in no time, this ship seemed cursed with bad luck. Kavrin had been spending his time in sickbay reading up on the ships history, it seemed quite colourful and painful even by enterprise standards. Kavrin turned in towards the turbo lift while continuing to read the reports, finally he found the one he had been looking for, crew additions. Kavrin was annoyed that he had not spotted that he had a new crewmember joining his department, but as he read Russell’s profile and record he was surprised to think that a man like that existed, his records having only started when he was 28, most federation citizens would at least have a basic record but all there was on the report was a time of joining Starfleet and from then on, nothing about his past or even his date of birth. Kavrin made a mental note to check on this Lieutenant and see how he had avoided having a record prior to joining Starfleet.
Entering the turbo lift Kavrin noted he was not alone in the lift, he found a young ensign making her way up to the bridge, by her department colours she was either medical or science, but her hands and eyes told him that she was most likely a nurse “Hello ensign, are you heading for the bridge?” the young girl simply nodded, as he entered and she set the lift back into motion and Kavrin returned to reading his reports, the remaining reports were just confirming that every precaution about internal security had been completed so Kavrin was going to simply hand them to the captain, normally he would have to hand it to the XO but with them down on that senior position as well he would have to annoy Aly with it. Walking out onto the bridge he noted on the view screen they were in some greenish gas that told him they were in the nebula, or some sort of space anomaly, Kavrin had spent most of the trip here working on every plan he could think of that involved the ship coming under attack, ships, pirates, boardings, everything but if it was anything else then it was not his problem. Moving around the bridge to the captain’s chair he spoke quickly to the captain “Captain, here are my department reports, everywhere on the ship is secure, just in case, also the last report details strategies that we can use encase it is a pirate problem, and a few if it is Klingons or Romulans” Aly looked up at the mention of the last two.
<Tag Aly>
“Well i always plan for Klingons and Romulans” Kavrin smiled before he went around to the security station to check up on things from there. Taking the seat the ensign half jumped out of Kavrin began to think of what could be hiding in that gas cloud but as he began thinking it something was said from the science consol.

Aly was now seated in the Captain's chair, she wasn't finding it particularly comfortable and was fighting not to start drumming her fingers on the arm. She wasn't quite sure what to do and didn't want to start interrogating her crew as they were all doing their jobs. It was then that Commander Los arrived “Captain, here are my department reports, everywhere on the ship is secure, just in case, also the last report details strategies that we can use encase it is a pirate problem, and a few if it is Klingons or Romulans” Aly looked up at the mention of the last two.
"Do you have any reason to suspect that the Romulans or the Klingons are behind the disappearances?" she asked. Kavrin gave a catch-all shrug.
“Well I always plan for Klingons and Romulans” Kavrin smiled before he went around to the security station to check up on things from there. Aly gave a half smile in response and was left to wonder whether the security chief was paranoid and if so whether this was a good or bad thing.

A message came up from engineering, apparently a piece of wreckage had been found and beamed on board for further study. That was occupying the CEO and the CScO, Aly was expecting from them anytime. Apparently the piece was 'consistent' with being a bit of the Eos but not proven to be so, yet.
The bridge was quiet, the first three surveys had shown up nothing out of the ordinary and so the Excalibur was pushing ever deeper in to the gas clouds. Aly was nervous, there was a knot of tension in her neck that refused to ease. She was so far outside her realm of experience in this weird cloud that she was trying to convince herself that it was purely unease creating the tension and nothing more. Aly looked around the bridge, the staff were performing their duties effectively and none of them needed interference from her.
Lieutenant James Henderson was still manning the helm, Commander Los was at the security station. Sira Hirake had Aly's old post at comms, Zarok was still at science and Hugh Jensen was at tactical. None of them needed any input from Aly and she was still in silence. She could have left the bridge but wanted to be here. It still felt a little unreal. She sat in silence mentally conjugating verbs in Andorian. Despite serving alongside an Andorian she hadn't had much chance to practise the language and didn't want to lose her fluency.
It was then that Aly felt a strange hum on the deckplates. The viewscreen flickered and crackled the image of the nebula fading into static and then reappearing. She glance round, there were lights flickering on all the bridge stations. Chief Jensen turned in his seat.
"Captain, there's power surges...." He slumped in his chair and started to slide to the deck. Aly jumped to her feet. she could still feel the thrum of something. her vision spun for a second and she felt very ill. She clutched at the arm of her chair fighting to keep her lunch down. Then there was darkness.
The emergency lighting flickered into life, the thrum had stopped and Aly's vision had cleared although her stomach still wasn't happy and her balance seemed a little off. She swallowed hard and straightened up looking around.
Sira, Hugh and James were down. Commander Los was still on his feet but looking as green as she felt. Zarok was up as well. All the stations seemed to be flickering. Aly walked to Hugh's side, she bent to press her fingers to his throat. His pulse was strong. Maybe it was a trick of the dim lighting but Aly would have sworn that she saw his eyelids flicker, he wasn't asleep but that was what it looked like.
She saw the other conscious officers checking those on the floor.
"Are you two all right?" Aly asked, formality falling away with her worry about her crew.

She looked at Hugh's flickering console. "Looks like main power is out and large chunk of the Excalibur's power conduits have blown out." As she had feared the whole ship had been affected She glanced at the other two. "Mr Zarok I want you to make a start on working out what that was." She gave a wry smile. "Commander Los, you and I are going to try to get a comm open to engineering."

A few slightly scorched fingers later and power had been restored to the Excalibur's internal comm system, Aly did not know how long it would last and she was sure Savin would not be please when he saw their somewhat eccentric handiwork.
"Bridge to Engineering: please report on your status." She was hoping that there was going to be a reply to her message.

"Chief!" Ensign Hillary Rayman called out, pointing at her station. It started to spark furiously, then died altogether. The girl slumped backwards in her seat, and only the presence of her Andorian collegue Thelev kept her from sliding from her seat.
Savin turned, then reached to balance himself against the staircase that led to the upper engineering level. The next thing he knew he was lying on his side on the deck, trying very hard to keep his breakfast down. "Status!" he gasped out, as he climbed back to his feet, noticing that emergency lights had come on.
"Sir, all humans have passed out," the Andorian reported smartly, his antennae swaying, his face a little pale. "I feel dizzy...you passed out briefly too, but recovered quick. Are you damaged?"
Carefully, the Vulcan shook his head. "I am undamaged," he answered evently, "just..momentarily unbalanced." He straightened then looked around, only to discover that all consoles were dark. He tilted his head as a garbled message came through over the intercom.
=/\= "Bridge to Engineering: please report on your status."
Staggering over to a wall companel, Savin pressed the button. "Engineering, Savin here. Engines are off-line, emergency power online. All Human crew unconscious, please advise."

Kavrin grew bored of the lack of activity, while he did not expect them to be attacked by Klingons he would rather that then all this scanning, there was a slight glimmer of interest when science had picked up debris from a ship but as no one seemed to be telling him anything so he assumed that there was nothing to be concerned about. Kavrin was about to leave the bridge in the hopes of finding something more interesting elsewhere when the tactical chief spoke. "Captain, there's power surges...." He slumped in his chair and started to slide to the deck. Aly jumped to her feet. Kavrin watched as everything went down, the consol in front of him blurted out security alerts all other the ship before it shut down. just as suddenly as the power going out Kavrin felt a strange sensation run though him, it felt like he had been up for days without sleep, while at the same time he felt like he had been eating field rations, Kavrin felt if he moved to much he would either fall other or be sick where he stood. Finally the emergency lighting came on and Kavrin looked over the bridge to find that only he, Aly and Zarok were still up right. "Are you two all right?" Aly asked, Kavrin looked at both the officers, Aly looked like she was going to fall over at any moment while Zarok looked like he had the wind taken out of him. “I will be fine when the room stops moving” Kavrin moved himself to the tactical station and stood next to Aly as she brought up what little information was available.
"Looks like main power is out and large chunk of the Excalibur's power conduits have blown out." As she had feared the whole ship had been affected She glanced at the other two. "Mr Zarok I want you to make a start on working out what that was." She gave a wry smile. "Commander Los, you and I are going to try to get a comm open to engineering." Kavrin gave the captain a look of worry “I am no engineer, so no guarantees” Kavrin set down to work with Aly on a conduit that connected to the communications system, Kavrin had no idea what he was doing so he was mostly following Aly’s suggestions. Kavrin felt like he had burned half his fingers where he had constantly touched live systems, finally Aly had the communications fixed enough to open a line to engineering. "Bridge to Engineering: please report on your status." Kavrin and Aly did not have to wait long for a response. =/\=Engineering, Savin here. Engines are off-line, emergency power online. All Human crew unconscious, please advise.=/\= Kavrin turned to Aly “I think Captain, for the moment, engineering should concern itself with getting main power back, or at least external sensors, I will try and gather whatever Medical and Security officer that have not been affected and try to gather those that are in one place so we can monitor them.” Kavrin was not a doctor but he knew they thinking and he would like to know how much of a security force he still had left.
<Tag Aly>
“I will report once we have an idea of the number of crew who are incapacitated, I am concerned that if this was some sort of new weapon we may well not be able to stop a full boarding party,” Kavrin knew the captain had a lot on her mind but this was a serious problem and his concern was very likely if this was not a natural occurrence.
Leaving the bridge by the nearby duct Kavrin began going down towards the deck where medical was, Kavrin knew that those there might be able to get the remaining medical and security personnel together there and begin the slow process of checking every deck for casualties ‘this is going to be a very long day.

"Aye, sir. Relative stop 500 kilometers inside the nebula"
Aly looked at the Assistant Science Officer would had quickly taken Thalin's place. "Mr Zarok, How long for a detailed scan of this area?"
The Vulcan looked up carefully, shutting his eyes as he placed his hand across the computer console, “Well I do speculate that it should be only one cycle of the computer systems to complete. However, that is an approximation of how I perceive it. Vulcans do not speculate.”
Opening his eyes once again, the aforementioned Vulcan began to key in a command sequence and thus calculate the ordered scan of the internal nebulan structure. Looking up, he raised a brow and turned to report to his commanding officer.
“Fascinating; there is apparent wreckage in the nebula. This would move to suggest that it is, in fact, the Eos, though there are odd signatures of energy emitted from the scuttling. It has been damaged by the nebula.”
||||
"Thank you for your swift attendance commander," he started, gesturing towards a seat. He held out a data disk towards Zarath. "These are the shield matrices, but I have had little luck optimalising them. I would value your input, as you are obviously more experienced in this than I."
“The shield matrices then need something akin to a jumpstart, if you are familiar with my poor parlance. Speaking of parlance, you certainly do not speak like any Vulcan that I have heard. Forgive me for the mention of it never the less. However, what needs to be done, I’m assuming...you need to engage in some crystal realignment.”
The Vulcan gestured back towards his precious engines. "My field is warp mechanics, but I would like to learn more about other fields. This seems like a good opportunity to do so, would you not agree?"
“I would very much; I also want to thank you. You are one of the few individuals that do not take my mannerisms for poor behavior or arrogance around here. I seriously do not mean to be held in such a regard, however, I often feel that is how I am viewed. Or am I simply worrying too much?”
“When these ships were refit, the phaser banks were tied in directly to gather warp plasma. Perhaps a similar case could occur via the shield generators, and they too can withdraw plasma in such a fashion.”
||||
“Well i always plan for Klingons and Romulans” Kavrin smiled before he went around to the security station to check up on things from there. Taking the seat the ensign half jumped out of Kavrin began to think of what could be hiding in that gas cloud but as he began thinking it something was said from the science consol.
Zarok looked up carefully, nodding, “To be prepared is certainly a noble quality, however, I currently have not detected any scientific proof for the presence of Klingon or Romulan vessels within range. Never the less, it is important to continue to adapt our systems to them for the case in which something may occur.”
||||
Zarok stood, maintaining formality, “I await further orders, Captain. My Vulcan physiology has prevented me from feeling the ill effects that life forms with hemoglobin based molecular blood have thus felt. It is with this that I believe I am able to maintain decorum equally. I await your further instructions.” In the style of Vulcan officers, he placed his arms behind his back, once more awaiting her response to this.
The Vulcan looked back to his console, speaking as though nothing at all had happened. “The computer, or what I might access of it, reports that there are weak life signs across the ship. Those with human physiognomies have been rendered unconscious. It would appear that we have been struck with some sort of energy phase weapon.”
He then hastily added, “There still exists internal communications.”
Zarath removed the communicator from his side, leaning against a wall in engineering for support. Blinking his eyes carefully, he flipped it open and began to speak into the frame, “Zarath here. We have little to work with – main power is down…the humans here are…out of it to say the least. I need medical assistance, stat.”

"Engineering, Savin here. Engines are off-line, emergency power online. All Human crew unconscious, please advise."
Aly breathed a silent sigh of relief as she heard the CEO's voice on the comm. "It appears that Excalibur was struck by some sort of energy pulse. As far as we can tell all the human crew are unconscious."
“I think Captain, for the moment, engineering should concern itself with getting main power back, or at least external sensors, I will try and gather whatever Medical and Security officer that have not been affected and try to gather those that are in one place so we can monitor them.” Commander Los said. Aly gave a brief nod, she'd remind the Security chief about formality later.
"Ensign, can you focus on trying to get the external sensors back online and seeing what damage has been done to the engines."

“Zarath here. We have little to work with – main power is down…the humans here are…out of it to say the least. I need medical assistance, stat.” That was another member of the senior staff at least able to answer but the request made Aly curse (in Klingon). She tried to remember if any of the medical staff were non-human. She hadn't read all the personnel files yet and she honestly had no idea.
"Commander, As far as we can tell so far all the human crew members are unconscious. I'm sending Commander Los down to round up the concious members of the crew. I will stay on the bridge and co ordinate things. I believe between us Mr Zarok and I get get internal comms working again. Please aid Ensign Savin with the sensors and the engines. I want to know what has happened to us"

Then Aly looked at those still on the bridge with her. "Commander Los," she said formally. "Be careful, we can't tell what damage has been done to the other decks. and report back regularly."
“I will report once we have an idea of the number of crew who are incapacitated, I am concerned that if this was some sort of new weapon we may well not be able to stop a full boarding party,”
Aly hadn't even thought of that possibility. She thought rapidly. "If it comes to it we'll seal ourselves off and try to hold them off that way. Keep on the comm, if you go quiet I will assume something bad has happened to you. Good Luck."

Aly watched as he climbed into one of the access ducts. She looked back at Zarok, having a Vulcan around made her feel more secure even if the situation was this precarious. "Mr Zarok do you have any suggestions on the best way to proceed with the comm system?"

****************************************************
Petty Officer Second Class Laura Fernandez had been on duty in sickbay and assisting Doctor Wundt with some general treatment of crew with sprained ankles and damaged fingers. It was a pretty normal day of nursing. Then the ship shook and Wundt blanched visibly before sliding slowly to the deck as Laura watched. Her head throbbed and she suddenly felt incredibly drowsy. Then the feeling passed. She swallowed hard, her throat was dry, and looked around sickbay. Everyone else was down, Laura instinctively pressed her fingers to Doctor Wundt's throat. She was relieved to find his heartbeat strong and regular as was his breathing. She made her way around the room checking on everyone. To her immense relief they were all alive.
She went to a comm panel and tapped it trying to signal the bridge, she got no response. It seemed that comms were out and she was on her own. She got the Doctor on to a biobed and did a scan. It seemed there was nothing wrong with him. She gave him a dose of adrenaline hoping to bring him round. Nothing happened. Laura swallowed hard now she needed some help. She walked out in to the corridor outside sickbay hoping to see someone else who could help her. She was, however, very surprised when she saw the Security Chief climb out of an access hatch.
She hurried over to him. "What's going on, sir. The rest of the medical staff just collapsed. Are we under attack?" Laura said. She was babbling but she was scared and didn't care if he knew it.

"We are working on it captain," the Vulcan replied stoically, "though with only myself and Thelev conscious, that may take several hours. We have to go over the power distribution grid fuse by fuse. I do not know how long it will take for my Human staff to regain consciousness." His tone was clipped, indicating his annoyance over the Humans at present, and their frail constitutions. "I have yet to see a medical officer enter engineering to tend to them."
Thelev knew better than to touch a Vulcan, but he did so anyway as the chief engineer seemed distracted. "I have internal sensors online, but at minimal power," he reported, then regardged his chief. "Are you all right?" he asked, "you've gone very pale."
The Vulcan shook his head in denial of his feelings, took a deep breath and regarded his assistant. "I am well enough to continue my duties," he responded coldly, "please tend to yours and refrain from interfering with mine."
Antennae swaying in surprise, Thelev stepped back, hands raised. "As you wish."
Savin exhaled, furrowing his brows as he stared after the blue-skinned alien. Then, he briskly turned on his heels and returned to the task at hand. "There is only two of us here captain," he repeated, "but we are doing all we can under the circumstances. I shall let you know when you have sensors. In the mean time, may I suggest taking a shuttle to assess hull damage?"
