It was late when Ensign Lok Demeter roused Admiral Magellan Lin to answer an incoming comm message. Wearily he rose, pulled on his tunic and padded over to the computer in his room.
"Computer. Connect to incoming transmission"
The spining logo of the federataion gave way to the face of a Vulcan flag officer. His eyes narrowed imperceptibly as he registered who it was.
=^=Commodore Sonak. What can I do for you?=^=
=^=It is a somewhat delicate matter" she disclosed candidly "I need a ranking member of senior staff to assist me Admirals Drew in on the Nevada Admiral McCormick is on Earth and Admiral Arok is still on Qu'onos.=^=
=^=I see=^= Magellan replied non-commitedly =^=I shall be with you tomorrow.=^=
Sonak raised an eyebrow, =^=Tomorrow? Starbase Assailant is five days away=^=
Magellan smiled, =^=Ah but I m not on Assailant. I m in a runabout. My team and I are due to arrive by mid-day tomorrow.=^=
=^=You are already en-route?=^=
Magellan nodded, =^=I was...asked to investigate as soon as possible. We left immediatly I had arranged orders for my staff=^=
=^=You refered to a team?=^=
Again Magellan nodded =^=I will introduce them when we arrive. Until then I order you and all your officers confined to the Vesuvius and all active investigations to be suspended. We will reassess the situation once I arrive and have debriefed you all. Have your senior staff prepared to meet with us as soon as we dock. Magellan out.=^=
Magellan stared at the screen a moment before getting up and going into the cockpit. A bajoran ensign sat at the helm.
"Demeter contact Base Operations on Starbase 47 have them cut off Vesuvius comms I don't want them talking to anybody outside their ship until we arrive. Oh and ask for a general lockdown of all incoming and outgoing vessels. Tell them to come up with some kind of excuse, I don't know Rigellian Flu outbreak or something. Whatever I wan't that base fully lockdown. Elron is a good friend of mind and I don't want his killer getting free whoever maybe involved."

Parsons sat on the cot in his cell contemplating his next move and hoping the Commodore had received his transmission. As Adam thought of ways to disable the forcefield or trick the guard into doing the same, Sonak entered the brig with Pai.
"What happened commander?" Sonak asked gently, motioning for the guard to lower the forcefield to let her in.
"Well Commodore, that is a little difficult to explain. I have been arrested on charges of sabotage and the murder of Admiral Elron," Adam said noticeably frustrated.
She sat down beside him on the cot, "Who ordered this?" she continued, "surely you did not do anything to warrant your arrest?" Sonak paused, but not long enough for Parsons to answer before continuing, "I have discovered who killed the admiral," she finally revealed and told him all she had discovered. "Someone clearly is trying to prevent this news from being released, but I still cannot understand why you were arrested, and on whose order."
Adam took a moment to soak in the new information that his CO had revealed.
"Only the chief of base security, myself, or Colonel Halthor," Paikea said in response to the Commodore's questions," other than that only command grade officer's have the ability to arrest the Commander. I doubt that you or Section Admiral Nova ordered his arrest."
"I certainly did no such thing," the Vulcan replied coldly, regarding her chief of security with interest, "what would I gain when I need his assistance? Any officer on my staff is valued, a first officer with his experience even more so."
"I asked the same question, and I was told it was Admiral Nova himself."
She paused, watching both men. "I want to hear why Nova ordered his arrest. Go question Nova, on my orders, if he asks. Arrest him if needed, equally on my authority."
Paikea didn't know how his friend ended up arrested and in the brig, but he was not happy about it. Whoever was behind this had a lot power and access to highly classified systems.
"Commodore, I have to believe that the person behind this is someone of high importance in Starfleet," Paikea said, " only someone like that would be able to arrest a Starfleet officer onboard Fleet Headquarters."
I have no idea why the Admiral would want me arrested. I was attempting to access the security records of the assassination when I observed two crewmen setting an explosive device. Parsons went on to explain the rest of what he remembered before being shot with the phaser and waking up in the brig.
Sonak sighed, nodding in agreement. "Indeed, and whoever it is, we need to find out. Quickly too for they shall not sit idle. They tried to eliminate us before, and now Commander Kirk is injured..." She trailed off, then fixed her glare on Paikea, though it was not directed at him. "Arrest Admiral Nova," she ordered, "by any means necessary. I will contact Admiral Lin on Starbase Assailant for outside assistance. Everyone on this starbase is compromised; he is not."
Adam felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up as the Commodore spoke. He knew what the Commodore was risking by ordering the arrest of a sitting Section Admiral on his own starbase, and he was proud to serve under her.

She moved off a slight distance, after stepping out of the cell and placed the call to SBA.

Paikea had just been ordered by his commanding officer to arrest Section Admiral Duke Nova. Paikea didn't fully understand her reasons, but Paikea was not about to put his career on the line for her. As he approached the Section Admiral's office, Paikea wad deciding how he would proceed.
"Commander may I ask what you are doing here?" Nova's liason asked.
"I need to speak with Section Admiral Nova, I've been ordered to place him in custody," Paikea said standing his ground.
"What the hell are you talking about? Arrest the Section Admiral! You are out of your mind," the liason said loudly.
"Look, I'm not going to do it," Paikea said finally deciding what he was going to do," Commodore Reckus ordered me to do this, but I'm not stupid enough to actually arrest the longest tenured Section Admiral on this side of galaxy."
"Then what are you going to do?" the liason asked," you will be in direct violation of a direct order."
"I know, thats why Section Admiral Nova is now confined to his office and personal quarters," Pai said as he tapped his combadge," I need a security team in Section Admiral Nova's office. He will be escorted to his quarters if he decides to leave. That is the best thing I can do for you. If you have a problem with that take it up with Commodore Reckus."
"Trust me I plan to do that right now," the liason said as he entered the Section Admiral's office. Paikea was not stupid enough to stay around and face the Section Admiral. He was not going to be the person known for arresting Duke Nova, that honor would fall on Sonak Reckus herself.

Sonak knew she had been risking a lot in ordering Apirana to arrest Nova. She also know that she had little authority to even enforce the order. Therefor, while she wasn't altogether pleased that her security chief had disobeyed her direct order, she couldn't quite fault him either. Evenso, a house arrest was sufficient.
She listened as Magellan issued his own orders. =^=I will introduce them when we arrive. Until then I order you and all your officers confined to the Vesuvius and all active investigations to be suspended. We will reassess the situation once I arrive and have debriefed you all. Have your senior staff prepared to meet with us as soon as we dock. Magellan out.=^=
"Yes sir," she answered dutifully, before the Trill signed off. Staring at the starfleet logo on the screen, she couldn't help but pull up an image of a very drunk Trill admiral, not so long ago, on this very starbase.
Her gathered evidence would be safely awaiting the admiral's arrival, put away aboard the Vesuvius where none would get to it. "Attention all Vesuvius crew," she called, after initiating a station wide call, "return to the Vesuvius immediately. Disobeying this order will result in harsh penalties, no excuses." She motioned for Paikea to help Adam up, as she took her exec's other arm.
"Halthor will assist in moving Commander Kirk to our sickbay, where I personally shall see to his injuries," she promised, settling into medical mode just as smoothly as she did in command.
Minutes later, they set foot back on the one space they hadn't been allowed to go for the past four days. Anxiously, Sonak waited for Lin to make his presence known, even though that could take several hours in the least, if not another full day. Until then, they would take the opportunity and rest, which they all had deserved.
Though Parsons had been under arrest on the starbase, she couldn't in good conscience have him transferred to the Vesuvius brig. Since they were cut off from the starbase, communications wise, and guards were posted at all hatches to ensure none could or would leave without prior permission, she saw no need for it either. "Keep a low profile," she suggested as she released his arm. "I will be in sickbay, I trust you will head for the bridge?"
With a final nod, she patted her exec on the shoulder once, in an attempt to show comfort and acceptance of him, before she walked off. She mused on who she would be bringing, so that they might conclude this horrifying episode in their lives.

The Runabout Marengo alighted softly on the pad and was slowly drawn inside the vast station. It travelled beneath the outer skin of the Starbase and was drawn through a series of passageways by tractor beams and anti-grav platforms before coming to rest within a pressurised bay.
The 5 man team from Assailant left the various points within the small ship and met at the hatchway.
"We tread lightly" Magellan said, "No risks and no impulsive actions" That last comment seemed to be directed at Tedak. "Leave senior Starfleet Staff to myself, Zoilip or Ensign Lok."
"What about me" Aiken grinned "Any sweet words of encouragment?"
Magellan stifled a scowl, "No Mr Drolar you are a Federation Citizen, I have no dominion over you. Merely do what you do best and report back to me. I suggest you wait until we are aboard the Vesuvius before you leave the runabout." Magellan turned back to the others "Right then gentleman lets get this underway."
As they made their way up form the shuttle docks to the larger docks where the Vesuvius was berthed Magellan took a moment to reflect on what he knew of the crew.
Commdore Sonak, a vulcan officer formerly CO of the medical ship Leeuwenhoek. Her career was distinguished but their paths had rarely crossed and Magellan new all to well that not all Vulcans could be trusted. Adam Parsons a suspect was formerly of the Scavenger and had been due to spend a tour on SBA before he was cherry picked to be Sonaks XO. The Marine Halthor he didnt know muc h about. Only that he had recently returned to duty on the ship. Suspcious timing one mught say. Apirana was also from the Scavenger and had a reprimand in his file. Nothing too damning though. Commander Kirk was from a good family and had served on both the Tigershark and Scavenger under his overal operational command. He was apparently injured. Lastly Commander Martens. On and off Engineer and a genius at that. Having worked heavily in Starship design but very much a family man.
He turned his musings to Elron. He and Elron had served together for years both in Command Staff and in Communications. He found it hard to think of his friend murdered he found it equally unlikely that former Section Admiral Nova was responsible. The pieces didnt fit together in this puzzle. Not at all and that was even with the extra information he had that the Vesuvius crew did not.
The Chief of Base Security met them as they disembarked and handed Magellan the latest security reports. Magellan gave them a quick read through before dismissing them and allowing them to continue their job. Running security on bases this size was a nightmare.
"To the vesuvius then" He said to no-one in particular.
The Airlock to the Vesuvius was heavily guarded. A pair of base security officers stood on one side whilst a pair of Vesuvius's own officers stood on the other side. They were politely asked to wait whilst the duty officer was fetched. Within moments Commander Apirana arrived.
"Admiral welcome to the Vesuvius." he said dutifully,
"Thank you Commander. I understand the Commodore is expecting me. I suggest we go directly to your briefing room and make a start."
Paikea nodded, "This way Sir"
The Chief of Security made polite conversation as they travelled up through the ship but all 4 of the men seemed reticent to talk and so most of it was spent in silence.
The ships conference room was pretty much like any on a starship, functional but small. The Vesuvius's senior staff were all assembled with Sonak at there head. As Paikea led them into the room she rose to meet them.
"Admiral. I m glad you are here"
"Glad" Magellan sniffed, "You may not be in a few minutes. Don't worry I don't need the centre seat" he added as Sonak moved to one side. "This is still your ship, for now."
Sonak retook her seat as did her new guests Magellan however remained standing. He moved towards the rooms display and synchronised his PaDD to it. The Vesuvius logo was replaced by one used by Starbase Assailant. He quickly transfered a number of files and protocols into the Vesuvius computer core.
"Let me start by introducing my Investigative team - The Bolian is my Tactical Advisor Commander Zoilip, The Ensign is Lok Demeter a highly skilled Operations Officer and lastly Tedak ir-Saj'sihaer tr'H'Rhinann Romulan Ambassador to the New Debrune Imperium." he paused to allow each officer to make a curt nod as they were introduced and then continued,
"It concerns me to say that I am currently unimpressed by the activities of this crew in the matter of the death of Fleet Admiral Elron. It seems to me you are chasing your tails. For a start off I want to know what possessed you to order the arrest of former Section Admiral Nova. I have since rescinded that order by the way Commodore. Why is Commander Parsons a suspect? and what progress is any you have made. This is an open invitation as far as it goes Commodore Sonak is as much in the doghouse as all of you... Well...."

The Vulcan woman locked eyes with her first officer first, before settling her cold stare on the Trill admiral. "Be that as it may admiral, but what did you expect us to do? Sit by idly while we were accused after a close friend was murdered in cold blood before our very eyes?"
She slid two PADDs across the table towards where he was standing. "The first PADD contains details of how Admiral Elron was killed, the second contains information that proves that the body in the starbase morgue is in fact not that of Admiral Elron. Therefor, that should explain why I ordered the arrest of Admiral Nova. He was less than co-operative and less than informative towards our general queries. Furthermore, Commander Martens has recovered evidence that we were in fact a target and had that explosive we recovered gone off, the starbase might be partially destroyed and we would not be sitting here facing your accusations."
The Vulcan was less than happy at being confined to her own ship, being told that 'for now' it was still her command. Yet, she did trust this Trill and knew him to be a fair man. He had to be, if he had a Romulan on his entourage, hadn't he? Aside from that, she had met him once or twice before, albeit briefly and not long enough to get to know him in any way. "I do not know why Commander Parsons was accused. As far as I know, he does not know Elron the way I do. What bothers and concerns me now though, is why was Elron replaced with a clone and who would benefit by having someone impersonate him?"
She crossed her hands before her on the table and regarded everyone in the room, her emotions now closer to the surface than before. "I am worried that we are but a small part in a bigger ploy and I would like to find out why."

"Now what risks would I be taking admiral?" Tedak asked dryly as they walked towards the docked Somma class vessel. The Romulan had never been aboard Starbase 47 before and had never imagined he'd board any other ship besides the Jefferson - where he had served -, the Galaxy or the Copenhagen. And none were as state of the art as the vessel he was going to now. "And what impulsiveness would that be?" He feigned astonishment but in truth he was slightly irritated.
"Naturally, this is a Starfleet matter, as the death of an admiral through manslaughter is a serious offense. However, I don't see how this crew could be responsible. I have seen reports of them having disappeared for several weeks on end, and I have seen consecutive reports of their crew and sensor logs, indicating that they weren't in this galaxy at all."
When Lin didn't respond, the Romulan remained silent the rest of the walk, assuming the Trill was pondering his questions. When he was introduced to the Vesuvius' senior staff, he bowed slightly, then listened as their captain explained what had transpired, and what they had discovered.
Picking up the PADD before Lin could, he reviewed the data, before handing it to Lok, for him to review. "Interesting," he stated carefully. "It looks like our own station isn't the only one prone to sabotage and conspiracies." That earned him a dangerous glare from Lin, which he ignored. "Please understand that we're here to discover the truth behind all the lies and we shall find it, whatever the outcome. You must understand that while you're all confined, it is quite likely for your own safety."
He clasped his hands behind his back as he surveyed the room, standing up to his full height. "However, if you have questions, I shall be interested to hear them and answer them to the best of my abilities. I am, after all, a diplomat." He nodded sideways to his Starfleet companions. "They, however have their own duties to attend to in this matter, but we endeavour to uncover the truth, the same as you."
The Romulan caught the Vulcan's hard stare and he almost recoiled from it. He'd seen it in T'Val before and recognised it as determination among a few things. She was close to breaking, and quite possibly even closer to tears. Tedak knew the woman had been close to Elron, more than just collegues; they'd been friends. She had a lot to lose, if the investigation went the wrong way, and she had risked a lot in arresting Section Admiral Nova.
He stood back, giving Lin room once more to speak, keenly observing the crew's reactions. Leaning against the wall, he allowed his gaze to wander, studying each and every face present. What he saw, he already didn't like, even though he could relate. He'd been the object of close scrutiny more than once, had even been framed for murder once. Who better than he, to study and aid them if necessary?
Personally, Tedak was of the opinion that this crew was as innocent as they claimed to be in this, yet he couldn't voice that belief just yet. Not here in this room, in their presence. Yet, he also knew that these people were quite capable of killing, if they were driven to such a desperate act. Of that, he was absolutely certain. "Admiral, a word once we're done here?" he whispered, drawing the admiral's attention.

"Oh there will be more than a word" Magellan acknowledged dryly and far too many from you he thought to himself.
"The Ambassador is correct in stating we want only the truth. But the evidence you used to arrest Nova was paper thin. Its is a Sections Admirals perogative to disclose only what he wishes to his junior staff. I would be interested to know what your Security team thought of your order"
TAG Paikea
"That aside you have made some progress. The information here" he prodded the PaDD "Is proof of that. My first question is not Why Clone Elron? But if this is a clone where is the real Elron? I suspect given the sophisticated nature of the clone that Elron was at some point in the hands of the cloner. Find him and we find the cloner.
Secondly why the attempt to destroy the Vesuvius with a bomb? It doesnt make sense that it was to stifle your investigation, there is a similar team on the base and starfleet would unlikely to let the matter rest. The bomb whilst sizeable wouldnt have destroyed the base, damaged yes. So to me it seems logical that the device was intended to focus on the Vesuvius."
He paused as if collecting his thoughts, "I propose that the answer to this whole riddle is tied to this ship and/or her crew. Well that is all for now. I would like Commanders Apirana and Parsons to see me at their leisure the rest of you are free to go, oh and Commodore can you find out if you have a supply of bio-mimetic gel in your sickbay. Thank you. Dismissed."

Tyr had landed the shuttle at the entrance hatch as ordered, and then proceeded to follow the trail of officers, remaining at the rear of course, through the station to the Vesuvius. He spied the ship out of the corner of his eye, looking through the internal glass of one of the portal hatches. He had never seen a Somma class before, and was impressed by both its size and segmented structure. The last vessel he had formally been assigned to was a smaller Venture class vessel, one which he personally had found a lot more comforting. It was cramped, chaotic and you couldn't go five paces without walking into someone else, but it was as safe as houses, and damn difficult for an enemy agent to get onboard without detection. They made there way through the heavily guarded entrance hatch and into the ship itself, being guided by the ships chief security officer. As they walked, Tyr reached out with his mind, scanning those people he walked past. He felt fear, doubt, uncertainty and a certain measure of trepidation at the sight of the group, but certainly no guilt. That was something he would have to bring up to Lin at a later date.
They were led to the conference room adjoining the bridge and invited to sit, with only Lin choosing to remain standing, undoubtedly for the dramatic emphasis of his presence to be increased. Whilst Lin and Sonak traded barbs, Tyr sat back and reached out with his mind again, probing those within the room. Sonak was impossible to read, but the others were not, and yet still he felt nothing but the occasional spasm of fear, no guilt. Nonetheless, he knew not to take his feelings at face value. Intelligence had relayed copies of all the Vesuvius personnel to him and Admiral Lin, including juicy little extras that were conventionally left out of the official reports. He knew full well the extent of hell which this crew had been through at times, and he was under no mistaken impression that they either were in possession of some telepathy defying loyalty, or that they had at some point picked up some measure of psychological training. He'd also been told to pay particular suspicious attention to both Sonak and Kirk. The Commodore's former infection with the Vladimir Tepes virus some years previously had caused her to be red flagged by intelligence every time something like this happened in her vicinity. Similar issues were raised concerning Kirk's former time with the Borg. Tyr was certain that such issues were totally unrelated to the issues at hand, but orders were indeed orders. He waited for Lin to make his conclusions and dismiss the others before approaching him. It was now only the four members of the investigation left in the room.
"Nicely done" He gave a little mock applause "At least we've taken the proverbial high ground, and they know who's in charge. I didn't feel any guilt by the way" He added almost as an afterthought. "But I wouldn't let that influence any judgements that you make. I have no doubt that they are all experienced and well travelled officers who are not as susceptible as most to a minor psychic probe" He paused and thought for a moment. "If Admiral Elron was taken, it happened around this area and it happened recently. If I was doing a set up like this, I'd want to reduce any risk of exposure as possible. Which limits our window of investigation. I'm assuming you'll want me in to read the XO when you interrogate him?"
<TAG Lin>
"In the meantime I'd like to talk to the ships ops officer and go over the sensor logs from the times of reference we have. We'll create a map of which ships passed from where to where and when, and find out if we have any unexpected detours. With Ambassador Tedak's knowledge of Romulan technology as well, we might be able to rule out the kidnapper being cloaked"

"Assume nothing Ensign" Magellan replied emphasising the rank and giving Lok a glare. The man was supposed to be keeping a low profile. "I did bring you for your...skills but remember to keep your scans within the law."
"Now that makes sense. I asked Tedak to come along for another reason but his knowledge of Romulan vessels would be most useful. Liase with which ever Vesuvius staff you need to. I ll speak with Commander Apirana"

As the Trill approached the gathered senior staff of the USS Vesuvius, Paikea couldn't help but be impressed. Having never met the man, Pai only knew of the Admiral by reputation. Waiting for the Admiral to finish speaking, Paikea collected his thoughts from the last few days. He didn't know why someone would clone Fleet Admiral Elron so the next logical thing came to mind. The assination, investigation, and near destruction of the Vesuvius was meant to hurt one them.
"The Ambassador is correct in stating we want only the truth. But the evidence you used to arrest Nova was paper thin. Its is a Sections Admirals perogative to disclose only what he wishes to his junior staff. I would be interested to know what your Security team thought of your order"
"I thought the order was without merit but I was not able to completely ignore a direct order from my captain," Paikea said surprised that he was defending the Vulcan," I informed Section Admiral Nova that per Commodore Reckus he was to be confined to his office or personal quarters. That at all times he was to be under heavy guard."
Without saying a word, Paikea turned to face his Vulcan superior. He hated everything about her, but in the end she demanded respect and admiration. Pai knew that he had just admitted to amending her direct order and he also knew that Vulcans had very long memories. Knowing that his participation in this brief meeting was now over, Paikea took his place and kept quiet until the Admiral dismissed them.
"Now that makes sense. I asked Tedak to come along for another reason but his knowledge of Romulan vessels would be most useful. Liase with which ever Vesuvius staff you need to. I ll speak with Commander Apirana"
"Admiral, did I miss something in my reports?" Paikea asked surprised that the Admiral was choosing to speak to him first.

Tedak wasn't certain whether he liked being paired with Ensign Lok, knowing as one of the very few who did know who Lok truly was. "Ensign Lok, why don't you go talk to the commodore and see what she truly knows about this. I'd like to have a word with the security chief." He watched as Lok moved off, then tapped Paikea on the shoulder before he left with Magellan. "Commander, meet me in Ten Forward after you're done talking to the admiral." It was not a request.
“I’ll see you in a few minutes Ambassador,” Paikea said surprised that the Romulan Ambassador would want to speak to him first. Having very little experience with the Romulan people, Paikea was a bit apprehensive about this little get together, but the fact that Admiral Lin trusted him eased his fears,” if there is nothing else Admiral I will go speak to Ambassador Tedak. I’m sure he doesn’t like to wait.”
Hoping to spend as little time in Ten Forward as possible, Paikea quickly made his way to the lounge. Paikea hated being in bars while on duty, it was so hard to deny himself all the good drinks available to him. As he scanned the room, he noticed that everyone was keeping their distance from a particular part of the bar.
"Thank you for coming so swiftly commander," the Romulan spoke politely, inclining his head ever so slightly in acknowledgement, "shall we move to a table? I assume you haven't had lunch yet?" He picked up his coffee and plate, nodding towards a table near a window. Settling down, he cast the security chief a penetrating gaze. "I'm quite certain you don't trust me," he started, "and I suppose you could have every reason to because of who and what I am or have been that many years ago. However, I assure you that I am not here to point fingers at you or the rest of this fine crew. I am only interested in discovering who murdered the admiral, whether he was a clone or not."
He paused, sipping his coffee. "As Ensign Lok said, I have substantial knowledge about Romulan technology, obviously, and I may be able to help as I have a tactical background."
“I just question your motives Ambassador, helping in this investigation does not help the Romulan Empire or the Debrune people,” Paikea said startled that the man was able to read his mind,” even so your expertise will be invaluable in this investigation. I trust that you will be able to be an impartial investigator.”
“Commander would you like anything?” the waiter asked making sure to keep his stare squarely on Paikea. “Chicken soup and iced tea,” Paikea said before turning his attention back to Tedak.
"You're entitled to questioning my motives commander," Tedak answered mildly, "and I would expect no less from you. I'll be honest with you, I'm not entirely certain why I was asked to come along. Perhaps because I am an outsider in this, perhaps because Lin has other ideas to which he'll inform me later. I don't know. And no, my participation so far doesn't help my people or even the Debrune, however if you have done your homework, you should've discovered that I'm not an ordinary Romulan...at least that's what I get accused of being." The Romulan shrugged indifferently, waiting as the waiter took Apirana's order. "Interesting choice of lunch."
“It’s really good,” Paikea said remembering the homemade soup that his mother would make,” my mother used to make this soup for me when I was little. I haven’t had it since I left my village.” Paikea immediately regretted saying that. Paikea hated talking about his family life and to reveal some of it to a complete stranger was out of character for him,” would you like some?”
"I'm not sure that would be wise," Tedak answered, "I no longer tolerate the consumption of too much meat, I'm afraid it'd make me quite ill. Perhaps another time?" He drained the remainder of his coffee, then folded his fingers around the mug, savouring the warmth of the now empty cup on his cold hands. "When was the last time you were home? I haven't been home...that is my home on Romulus, for years. My house is now ruled by a warden until my niece becomes of age. My sister was the head of our house, after my disgrace, but she was killed several years ago." He frowned, peering into the cup. "At any rate, what are your thoughts on this investigation? Is it fair, so far? What have you found?"
“I haven’t been home since I entered the Academy, my father was against the idea and so he banished me from our tribe,” Paikea said quickly and then turned his attention back to the investigation,” I think the investigation is going on fine, but finding good evidence has been difficult.”
"That generally is the problem in a murder investigation," the Romulan agreed, without hesitation, "and I know from personal experience that once you've been branded as the killer, proving your own innocense is even harder. Especially if you're set up. Tell me what you've found so far, and what the crew is doing about it. How are they holding up?" He paused a few seconds to take a few breaths. "I noticed your captain is close to exploding. Oh you might not have noticed..." He smiled slightly. "I used to be married to a Vulcan, I can read them just fine."
“That Vulcan is crazy!” Paikea said about his commanding officer,” she is the most illogical person I have ever met and her orders are erratic. I’m sure she is a great commanding officer, but since I’ve been on her crew she has made some very questionable decisions. As for the crew, they have been able to maintain morale as best as possible.”
"Crazy she might be, but she still commands respect," the Romulan countered sternly, "if she were truly crazy, she wouldn't be in command. However I do agree that, upon investigation, I do find some orders questionable, but all the same I'm quite certain she had her reasons. Did you ever try asking for them?" He leaned a little closer. "I'm sure you know that Magellan and I quite often differ of opinions...and that I find some of his orders highly questionable. Yet all the same, I know he cares deeply for his people. I trust him with my life. Do you trust her with yours?"
“No matter how I feel about her, I know that she will do everything in her power to save her crew,” Paikea said,” I know this because she was willing to gamble with the lives of millions just to get the Vesuvius home. I didn’t agree with her decision and I made sure to let my feelings known. Right now my relationship with her is tenuous at best, but in the end my loyalty is to her and this crew.”
Finishing the rest of his lunch, Tedak settled back for a second. "And I do believe she'll need your loyalty, especially now. May I contact you again later? I do believe it's time I go and have a talk with the rest of the crew, starting with the commodore. Thank you for your honesty commander, it is greatly appreciated and I do hope I may return the favour at some point."
“You are the most interesting Romulan I have ever met Tedak, Admiral Lin is lucky to have you at his side,” Paikea said as he thanked the Ambassador.
The Romulan wisely did not respond as he rose from the table and walked away. He was fortunate that Paikea could not see his expression then and there, for he felt somewhat embarassed. Quickly, he exited the mess and went in search for the Vulcan commanding officer.

"Of course admiral," Sonak answered amiably, though she wondered why he asked. She nodded for Apirana to join the admiral, but to report back later. "Admiral, do you and your companions require guest quarters?" she finally asked, knowing she'd arrange them anyway just in case. "I will have someone escort you when you have spoken with my security chief."
The Vulcan woman rose from her seat, waiting for the admiral, his aide and the ambassador to leave. She watched as her senior staff filed out, but beckoned Parsons to remain for just a little longer. "I do not know exactly why the admiral is here," she confided to him, "but I do believe we must trust he acts in our best interest. Keep an eye on the Romulan and the Bajoran at all times while they are aboard. Have them covertly followed, for now."
She gazed past her first officer, a troubled look clouding her features. "I am concerned there is more to this than he is letting on," she finally finished, shifting her gaze back to Parsons. "Have you seen commander Fox? He was not at the briefing." She shook her head tiredly; she had not slept in the past two days, nor had she been home to spend time with her family. "No matter, I will be in sickbay searching for this bio mimetic gel. I shall also be checking up on Commander Kirk."
She nodded once, then swept out of the briefing room, heading straight for sickbay. All the while, her mind kept wandering to the day Elron was killed and the grief she had felt. Admiral Lin did have a point, if this was a clone; and she was fairly certain it was, then where was the real Elron? She chided herself for not thinking of contacting the Black Tulip sooner.
Scowling to herself, she tapped her combadge. "Commander Parsons, please send a message to the Black Tulip and acquire the last known position of Fleet Admiral Elron. Assuming the admiral is no longer in command, ask for Commander L'Ola Kanz. She used to serve on the Vesuvius, she will assist you."
Tapping it again, she rushed into sickbay, surprised to see John Caldwell present. "Ah Doctor Caldwell, good to have you back."
"Good to be back commodore," the young doctor answered, "Jatan has briefed me on the situation insofar he could. A shame really, that the admiral was killed, I rather liked him. The clone, I mean. While you were away I had to treat him for a few minor things, but I must admit that nothing ever raised my suspicion. THis clone was nearly perfect."
Sonak nodded. "Indeed he was. Please find out whether we have bio mimetic gel aboard. I shall be checking on Commander Kirk."
Caldwell nodded. "I do not need to check ma'am. We have approximately twenty grams of the substance in stasis."
Turning sharply, the Vulcan stared at him. "Are you certain?"
"Yes ma'am, quite certain. It was brought aboard before you disappeared. Well before, I must add."
"Reckus to Lin, please report to sickbay as soon as possible." The Vulcan paced away quickly, towards Kirk's bed. "How do you feel commander?" she asked of the barely conscious operations chief. "What happened? Do you remember?"

Location: USS Nevada, Captains Ready Room.
Ordering a hot cup of tea from the nearby replicator, Admiral Paul Drew keyed in several commands on the small panel infront of him and watched as a holographic communication window appeared on his desk. At the moment it showed the standard Starfleet seal, but as Drew keyed in more commands, it switched to show the logo of Section 47.
“This is Admiral Paul Drew of Section 47 Command to Starbase 47, respond.”
“Admiral Drew, this is Commander Hartland,” came the response.
“Commander, my crew inform me that you have declined us docking permission, can you tell me on whose orders that was?”
“My own sir, we are currently exp...”
“I am overriding those orders,” Drew said, cutting the Commander off, “find a location for my ship to dock now, and patch me through to Admiral Lin, wherever he is.”
“Yes Sir,” the Commander responded, somewhat formally, “patching you through now.”
“Magellan,” Drew said when the new channel was open, “do you want to tell me what is going on? Why is the Vesuvius here and why are they under communication silence? Why am I being refused permission to dock? Why are you and Sonak even on Starbase 47 and where is Duke?”
OOC:
Sorry for jumping in guys, but you have spoiled the Nevada's plan by being here! We were returning to SB47 to cover my promotion and now we find that you have gone and arrested Nova! We were going to sim here on SB47, but I'll keep my crew on the Nevada board for now. Given that our storylines are probably going to overlap though, I figured it was a good idea to at least have Drew in on the story.

"No no. Your report is quite thorough. Its more a question of vesuvius staff. I need a list of all staff that have arrived or departed within the last 6 months. I want names and ID pictures. Pass them to Tedak and ask if he recognises anyone."
"Is that all"
"Yes that will be all. Thankyou commander"
Moments after Paikea left the briefing room. The comm chirped there was a call for him.
It was Admiral Drew.
"Thats something we need to discuss in private not over an unsecure comm line. I ll beam over immediatly"
He tapped off the comm and turned to Zoilip.
"Continue as per ordered for now. I ll be back as soon as I can." Zoilip nodded and returned to working from his PaDD.
Magellan made his way to the Vesuvius' Transporter Room.
"Beam me directly to the Nevada" he ordered the Chief,
He looked awkward a moment, "I ll need to clear it with the Commodore. We are locked down"
Magellan sighed "I know. I m the one who ordered her to do it."
The Chief blanched and quickly energised him.
As Magellan rematerialised he was met by Commander Dantrek.
"Commander Good to see you again."
"Like wise Sir" Dan replied, "This way Admiral Drew is waitiing for you."
"I bet he is" Magellan replied grimly.
Drew was in his ready room sat behind his desk when Magellan arrived, they went through the perfunctory greetings and hand shakes before Paul offered him a seat.
"Well?" he said with a raised eyebrow "What on Earths been going on here"
"Hold your horse" Magellan grinned "Your not Section Admiral yet and until you do I still have nearly 4 years seniority over you. So thats What on earths being going on here Sir"
Paul smiled back,
"You wait, you can have your sirs for now, but when I am SA I ll be expecting them every sentence from you. Seriously whats up"
Magellans face became clouded and he leaned forward almost as if he expected someone to be listening.
He quickly filled him in on Elrons murder and the details concerning it, how they now believed it to be a clone and that Commodre Sonak had believed Duke Nova to be responsible and had him arrested.
"Thats ridicoulous, Nova would no more murder someone that you or I"
"I know" Magellan agreed "The thing is Duke Nova knew about Elron being a clone. He informed me as he had certain suspicions we decided to let the clone run, see what he did. As soon as the clone died he immediatly called me to come and take over the investigation. By then though the Vesuvius was involved and arrested Nova. As soon as I arrived I released him and locked down the Vesuvius."
"Theres more to this isn't there" Paul said
Magellan nodded,
"Nova contacted me because of some chatter he had picked up through intell. Romulan chatter. As soon Elron was identified as a clone a piece of the puzzle slotted into place. A few months ago an agent working we believe for the Tal Shiar attempted to assassinate teh Cardassian Legate."
"Saaroks ex-wife"
"Yes. V'Shal was involved in a kidnap shortly before. We thwarted part of teh assassination, which she completed with the aid of Govan Echal, of course I cant prove it. But thats not my point. V'shal instead of killing the Legate left that to her accomplice and stole some Biomimetic gel from our sickbay. She managed to transport it before Saarok caught her."
"Bio -mimetic gel. Used in illegal cloning."
"Exactly. Convient isnt it a highly restricted medicine is stolen and a month later we have a clone on our hands. Its why I ve brought Tedak with me. I m certain this is come kind of plot to infiltrate our section. Section Amdiral Nova agrees. What do you think?"

Having seen enough for now, Tedak walked back to the docking hatch, aiming to leave the Vesuvius for now. But not before he had met briefly with her commanding officer. The meeting was indeed brief as it lasted only a minute or two at most.
In those two minutes, he had arranged a meeting with her over dinner, so that he could explain what exactly his role was in this investigation, and that he wanted to learn more on what they had discovered so far.
Expression grim, the Romulan walked back to the vessel they had come to SB47 with. "Mr Drolar, what can you tell me on the uses of bio mimetic gel, cloning practices within the Federation and outside of it, and Elron's enemies? Additionally, I need to know the main enemies of the Vesuvius senior staff. Who would gain by their detention or their death, and who might we turn to for assistance. In short: who are their main allies?"
<Aiken>
"I have a meeting with the commodore this evening. Truth to be told, I do not understand why Magellan told you to stay here. I believe your presence at my dinner engagement would in fact be beneficial. Both for your story, once this situation has been solved, as well as public relations for the Federation."

"Keep a low profile," the Commodore suggested as she released Adam's arm. "I will be in sickbay, I trust you will head for the bridge?"
"Yes, Ma'am," Parsons said with a nod.
Sonak returned the nod and patted her exec on the shoulder, before she walked off.
* * *
Parsons met the senior staff and Admiral Lin in the conference room. It was good to see the Admiral again, but Adam wished it was under better circumstances.
* * *
The Vulcan woman locked eyes with her first officer after being lambasted by Lin, before responding, "Be that as it may admiral, but what did you expect us to do? Sit by idly while we were accused after a close friend was murdered in cold blood before our very eyes?"
She slid two PADDs across the table toward where he was standing. Furthermore, Commander Martens has recovered evidence that we were in fact a target and had that explosive we recovered gone off, the starbase might be partially destroyed and we would not be sitting here facing your accusations. I do not know why Commander Parsons was accused. As far as I know, he does not know Elron the way I do. What bothers and concerns me now though, is why was Elron replaced with a clone and who would benefit by having someone impersonate him?"
Parsons thought about speaking up, but decided to wait until he was called on by one of the flag officers present.
Sonak crossed her hands before her on the table. "I am worried that we are but a small part in a bigger ploy and I would like to find out why."
Admiral Lin responded, "I propose that the answer to this whole riddle is tied to this ship and/or her crew. Well that is all for now. I would like Commanders Apirana and Parsons to see me at their leisure the rest of you are free to go, oh and Commodore can you find out if you have a supply of bio-mimetic gel in your sickbay. Thank you. Dismissed."
"Yes Ma'am," Adam responded tapping his combadge. "Parsons to Lieutenant Collison. I want you to assign a security detail to follow our guests, discretely."
"Aye, Sir," Collison replied. Collison had served aboard the El Sal as Parsons' Assistant Chief of Security and had managed to get himself transfered to the Vesuvius.
Sonak gazed past her first officer, "I am concerned there is more to this than he is letting on. "Have you seen commander Fox? He was not at the briefing."
"No Ma'am, I haven't."
"No matter, I will be in sickbay searching for this bio mimetic gel. I shall also be checking up on Commander Kirk." She nodded once, then swept out of the briefing room.
A little while later, Parsons heard Sonak's voice over the comm, "Commander Parsons, please send a message to the Black Tulip and acquire the last known position of Fleet Admiral Elron. Assuming the admiral is no longer in command, ask for Commander L'Ola Kanz. She used to serve on the Vesuvius, she will assist you."
"Yes, Commodore." Adam sat in the command chair on the bridge, which he had been standing near and sent the encoded message over subspace to the Black Tulip.

Magellan listened carefully to Drews thoughts and then made his excuses.
As he left the Ready Room he stopped over at Tactical.
"Mr Parks. Admiral Drew has allowed me to task you with a mission."
TAG Parks
He ushered Jon to oneside where they wouldnt be overheard.
"I need someone to execute a top secret mission that requires total deniability. I have someone on my staff more than capable but I need them on the Vesuvius. You however are free to roam Starbase 47. I need you to obtain a DNA Sample from..."
He paused looking around,
"...Section Admiral Duke Nova. He must not know what you are doing. It needs to be forensically treated and brought to the Nevada for analysis. Have your CMO run the sequence. We are looking for traces of Bio-mimetic gel factors. Report your findings only to myself or Admiral Drew. Understand?"
TAG Parks.
With the mission assigned Magellan returned to the hunt aboard the Vesuvius. Magellan was convinced there was a link to the theft from SBA, Elrons disappearance and replacement and the Vesuvius, what it was however eluded him.
He was met by Zoilip who handed him a PaDD. Magellan read it and frowned. "This was transmitted while I was gone?" The Bolian nodded "And you were able to block it?" "Yes." "Very good. I deal with this now."
He left Zoilip to his duties and went directly to the bridge.
"Commander Parsons. YOu sent a transmission to the Black Tulip. Are these type of actions what made you a suspect?"
"I m not sure I understand Sir" Adam replied nervously.
Magellan harumphed, "Well understand this. I order a communications lockdown and news block out for the Base and the Vesuvius. Who ordered you to send this messsage"
TAG Parsons
"I see. Surely contacting the Black Tulip would have already occured? Was't Commander Kanz informed her CO was killed when you made the discovery of Elrons death? Nevermind. I am relieving you of duty. You are to report to Ensign Demeter for a full debriefing."
Before allowing Parsons to respond he tapped his com-badge.
=^= Commander Apirana, I have new orders for you. Pleasae escort Mr Parsons to an interview with Ensign Demeter and please restrict Commodore Sonak to her quarters. Oh and Commander as of now you are the senior ranking officer of the Vesuvius. Magellan Out.=^=

Commander Jon Park was sitting in his office aboard the USS Nevada when he got word that a admiral Lin has come abroad. Knowing that they had Two Senior star fleet personal on the ship he headed to his station. As he head he was in with Drew Park started running scan's and looked up just to see him exit and head to Tactical.
"Mr Parks. Admiral Drew has allowed me to task you with a mission."
"Aye sir." Nodding to Thomas he started to move off with the Admiral so no one could hear them. "I need someone to execute a top secret mission that requires total deniability. I have someone on my staff more than capable but I need them on the Vesuvius. You however are free to roam Star base 47. I need you to obtain a DNA Sample from..."
Jon watched the look on his face change to looking weary.
Jon nodded his head and watched as Lin left the bridge. Jon walked back to the Tactical Station and stood by until he received word Lin left the Nevada. "Thomas your in command until i return." With that he left the bridge and headed to sickbay. Doctor Grey was sitting in her office going over the post mission exams when Jon tapped oh her door jam. "Doctor i need your help."

"Admiral Lin wants me to acquire a DNA sample from Admiral Nova and they need to know if her has any Bio-mimetic gel factors. I guess they think he is a shape-shifter. I need a way to get the DNA sample any ideas?"

Paikea Apirana had taken a few minutes from his busy schedule to eat another bowl of chicken soup. Even though he had eaten only minutes before with Ambassador Tedak, Paikea wanted to be comforted and the soup was definitely comfort food for him. This was all ruined when Admiral Lin contacted Paikea and informed him of the changes on the Vesuvius. It took Paikea everything in him to not spit out his soup in surprise. Making sure to swallow the soup in his mouth, Paikea then acknowledged Admiral Lin's order.
"Understood sir," Paikea said surprised that his friend Commander Parsons was being questioned once again. He had thought that he had already been proven innocent. It seemed that Admiral Lin didn't share his views.
=^=Adam, please wait for me. I'm to escort you to a meeting with an Ensign Demeter. I however have to deal with something else at the moment=^=
(Adam)
Being in charge was nothing new to Paikea, but this was something completely new for the experienced officer. Never in fleet history had the commanding officer and executive officer of a squadron flagship been removed by the Admiralty. Paikea did not like these turn of events, but he was going to enjoy this part of the job.
"Computer locate Commodore Sonak Reckus," Paikea asked as he waited inside the turbolift.
"Commodore Sonak Reckus is in sickbay."
"Computer sickbay," Paikea ordered already thinking of ways to enjoy this. He knew it was petty of him to enjoy what he was about to do, but he truly believed that this would be beneficial for everyone involved. It would show the Vulcan that she was above reproach. The Vesuvius was more than Sonak Reckus.
Paikea approached sickbay knowing full well that he would be doing this in front of the medical staff and Commander Kirk who had been injured in the explosion. This was regrettable, but Paikea understood that Admiral Lin's orders were to be followed immediately.
"Commodore Reckus, please come with me?" Paikea asked trying to be civil at first.
The Vulcan looked up, acknowledging her CTSO with a slight nod. "In a minute commander," she replied as she focused on Kirk, "I need to finish my examination." Yet, when she saw the anger flicker across the young man's face, she knew instantly something was wrong and wished she hadn't delayed.
"Commodore, please I do not want to ask again," Paikea said getting angry that the Vulcan was not letting him do his job the easy way. When he saw that the Vulcan Commodore was about to reach for her combadge, Paikea informed her of the recent changes," Commodore Sonak Reckus, by authorization of Admiral Magallen Lin you are hereby confined to quarters until further notice. Command of the Vesuvius has fallen upon myself, since Commander Parsons has been indentified as a suspect in the death of Fleet Admiral Elron. Please come with me quietly."

Adam sat in the command chair on the bridge of the Vesuvius reviewing status reports as Admiral Lin walked onto the bridge.
"I m not sure I understand Sir" Adam replied nervously.
"Commodore Sonak. Sir, we have a right to aid in our own defense. How can we do that if we can't communicate with anyone," Parsons retorted.
"Understood sir," Paikea said after a pause.
Parsons knew the Vesuvius crew was as shocked by the current circumstances as he and the Commodore were, and thought briefly about challenging the Admiral's authority to relieve him. Adam had no concrete reason to suspect Lin had been compromised by whatever force had gotten to Nova, and he trusted Magellan, having served under his chain of command before. As important, Adam trusted Pai and knew he had not been compromised, so he decided to comply...for now.
"Admiral, I stand relieved under protest, and will note that in the ship's log. I want to comply with your investigation, but I have no way of knowing which officers have been compromised and demand that the officers of the Vesuvius be allowed to aid in their own defense."
<TAG Admiral Lin>
After the Admiral had left the bridge, Adam received a message from Pai over the comm.
"That's fine Pai. At the moment, it seems I have nothing else to do," the now relieved XO replied.

She stood frozen, looking at Pai in disbelief. "What?" she finally managed, though she did walk with him. There was no need to cause a scene, nor was it in her nature to do so. It was illogical, and a wase of energy that was better spent otherwise. Truth to be told, though she wasn't going to tell Pai, she needed the time off. She hadn't slept in days and was extremely tired.
When the words sunk in, she nodded. "Understood," she answered slowly, still not quite believing that Lin had resorted to this. Yet, in retrospect it made perfect sense and she wondered why Nova hadn't done so in the first place. After all, she had ties to Elron, that went beyond mere duty. And she hád attacked him in the past, even though she was quite ill at the time.
"Computer, activate EMH." The Vulcan quickly briefed the female hologram on Kirk's medical status, then nodded towards Pai, who was waiting at a respectful distance. He probably knew that, as a doctor she had to transfer her responsebilities to someone else, and needed a brief time to do so. A few minutes later, she was ready to go and indicated for Pai to escort her.
"Take care of my ship commander," she requested as he delivered her to her quarters.
Sonak wanted to invite Pai into her quarters, hesitated on the doorstep for a few seconds, then finally walked in without inviting him. At the moment, it didn't seem proper as he had just relieved her off duty on the orders of the admiral. While she did trust Lin, and was quite certain he had proper motivations for doing this - even if she was certain that Nova should've done it from the start - she still questioned the Trill's sanity on it.
Sighing, she walked into her livingroom, noting that Jatan and the children were - surprisingly - not at home. At least she had a little time for herself now. As she had mused before, during the walk down to her quarters, she knew she actually needed the rest and this was quite a welcome break, even if the circumstances were not so welcome. After all, since discovering that Elron had been killed - whether he was real or not - she hadn't taken a break to rest and she hadn't slept at all, and it was breaking her up now.
Her emotions were very close to the surface and she came close to breaking out into tears, but she managed to control it just in time. Picking up several toys from the floor and placing them where they belonged, she made her way to the replicator and ordered a Vulcan herbal tea. With the hot beverage in her hands, warming them with it, she walked back to the couch and made herself comfortable.
Now, the waiting game would begin. How long before the admiral would come down here to berate her for her given orders? How long before the Romulan would come down for their agreed meeting? At least he was still being discretely followed, even though she had heard many good things about him, she also heard that he could be rather a loose cannon. Yet, through her younger brother she had learned that some Romulans could, in fact, be trusted. Even if her last dealings with them, a certain Major in particular, had dealt that trust a significant blow.
She wondered, could she contact Tedak and ask him to stop by now? She still had her comm badge, Pai hadn't taken that away, plus she still had her command codes and access to the ship. No. Sonak shook her head in dismay, chiding herself for even thinking it. A certain trust had been placed upon her and she wouldn't breach it by using her access for her personal gain. She would, instead, wait impatiently until someone contacted her either by comm or in person.
Then, she wished Jatan were home as suddenly she felt horribly alone.

Jon spoke with the doctor and he left sickbay. Heading to the transporter room he contacted the Star base and informed them he was coming abored.
A Lt.Commander replied back "We are under orders not to allow anyone abored." Jon replied." I am the CSTO on the Nevada and also a commander as well as under orders from Admiral Lin himself i am coming abored." Cutting communication i step on the transporter padd and look at Chief wolf. "Energize." with that the walls of the Nevada dissolved and the star base transporter room appeared with the young Commander standing there.
"Sorry commander but i have no time for games. I need to see Admiral Nova asap and i don't want to hear any excuses." and the Lt.Commander just turned and had him follow.
Jon walked around the station kinda chasing the Commander when he saw they weren't entering a turbo lift and they had been walking about an hour. Jon slipped away and entered a lift "Brig." The lift took him down and he entered the section marked restricted. A force Field activated and requested him for his security code. "Park beta 32 tango." the Field dropped and he continued to the brig doors.

That evening, Tedak made sure he was dressed properly, wearing dark grey pants and a dark blue shirt. Over that he wore an equally grey sleeveless robe which was set with the insignia that marked his station as Romulan ambassador. Checking his reflection one more time, he ran his hand through his hair in order to set it back into order, silently musing he needed a haircut, and soon. Nodding to his reflection, which of course nodded right back, he exited his guest quarters and headed toward the Vesuvius.
At the hatch, he was greeted by one of the starbase security officers. “Greetings lieutenant, I've got an appointment with Commodore Reckus.”
“She's been relieved of command, ambassador,” the guard informed him, “I'm not sure I should let you visit her. She's been ordered incommunicado.”
The Romulan frowned down on him, scowling. “I'm sure you were told that I arrived with Admiral Lin, and that I have business to conduct? The entire ship is ordered incommunicado, but I come and go as I please. If you have issues with that, take it up with Admiral Lin. I'm sure he'll find someplace more suitable for you to serve your precious Starfleet.”
The guard swallowed, but stepped aside to let the diplomat pass. Tedak offered his sweetest smile in response – which was rather a frightening sight to begin with – and stepped through the hatch. Once more, he marveled at the size of the ship, especially when she resembled the much smaller Nova class almost perfectly. And his species had provided her with three Mark II phase cloaks, which was worked on together with the Klingons as well. That alone, he found curious.
Following the directions the ship's computer gave him, Tedak finally arrived at the commodore's quarters, where he pressed the chime to make his presence known. He looked down as a child opened the door before him. The child squealed and darted off. “May I come in?” he called in, not wanting to step in just like that.
“Please do ambassador,” Jatan Reckus replied, as he appeared in the doorway. He held out his right hand towards the Romulan. “Doctor Jatan Reckus,” he introduced himself, “I'm glad you decided to stop by after all, especially now that...” He trailed off, letting the ambassador pass. “Sonak, the ambassador is here.”
Tedak bowed as the Vulcan woman approached, but he held his breath when he noted her appearance. While still smartly dressed, she suddenly looked exhausted and seemed to have lost much of her earlier spirit. “Commodore, are you all right?” he asked carefully as he was led to a seat. Almost instantly, the child from before bounced onto his lap.
“Please, I am off duty, call me Sonak,” Sonak answered, “and I am fine, thank you.” Her voice was completely devoid of any emotion, as was her expression. She seated herself across from the ambassador, reaching for the child. “Is she bothering you?”
“Not at all. It has been quite some time since I have held a child. My son was killed a few months ago...” He trailed off, shaking his head. “But that's not what I came here to talk about. I wish to know how you discovered that a high ranked Starfleet Officer was replaced by a clone.” He held up his hand. “Please, do not think me so naïve that I had not noticed your guards shadowing me. I am a former Tal Shiar operative, I know when I am shadowed.” It was a slight bluff as often enough he hadn't noticed, but this time, in truth, he had. She sighed, averting her gaze. “I must apologise for that.” She looked up again. “Trust me when I say I had little choice. We have dealt with Romulans quite recently, and they were not so integer as they appeared to be. My brother was held captive along with other diplomats, by Romulans who killed two of their own without mercy.” Sonak's eyes flashed bright green as she remembered. “There were children involved.” As the Romulan nodded his understanding, she explained how they had been transported to another galaxy entirely, where they had met the crew of the ancient NX Challenger and how they had been transported back after she had been forced to violate several Starfleet codes of conduct to achieve it.
After that, she launched into a detailed account of how Elron was killed right before their eyes, and everything that happened afterwards. “We had nothing to do with his death, clone or otherwise,” she finished, “Elron is one of my closest friends, and even though his clone was killed, I have no other wish but to uncover who ordered his death and also uncover why he replaced the real Elron. That was what we were doing before Admiral Lin intervened and confined us to our ship.”
“I see,” Tedak cut in, accepting the steaming cup of tea from Jatan, who calmly warned the little girl on his lap to be careful. “But why didn't you contact the Black Tulip immediately upon discovering that this Elron was a clone? Surely you knew he would likely be away with his vessel?”
Sonak shook her head. “I learned that he had been injured and had been recovering here on the starbase,” she explained, “therefor, I saw no reason to contact the Black Tulip until just before your arrival. Truthfully, it had not occurred to me before then.” She looked away again, almost displaying embarassment.
Having lived with a Vulcan for several years, Tedak picked up on her discomfort. Carefully, he set the child aside and leaned forward. “We are not here to judge your actions,” he explained, “we are here to uncover the truth. However, as you and your crew seem to be caught up in it, it seemed best to remove you from the equation. Surely you see that?”
The Vulcan nodded. “Certainly, and I also wondered why Admiral Nova did not do so before. Which led me to believe that he is involved somehow, in this conspiracy. I heard that Magellan released him again, but I urge you to keep him under investigation. Something is terribly amiss and I cannot understand what, exactly. Until such time that Admiral Lin will share his findings with me, however, I shall remain here, where he ordered me to be. To do anything else, would be a direct violation of given orders.” She offered him a slight smile. “And violating more orders is something I would rather avoid.”
This time, Tedak nodded. “Oh I understand that, more than you can understand.” His own grin evolved into a smile and he elaborated briefly on the times that he had ignored given orders. “Magellan instructed me to stay out of trouble,” he explained, “however, as much as I try, it always seems to find me. But, you must understand that we are on your side. I'm certain Magellan just did this for your own safety.” He paused as the child climbed back onto his lap. “And who is this?” he finally asked, causing the girl to giggle.
“Miriya,” a boy's voice sounded from beside him, “she's my younger sister. Over there is my twin Shanna. T'Kimi and Suron aren't home right now. They're staying over with a friend on the starbase.”
“Ah...and you are?” “My name is Seliv, sir,” the boy answered politely, as he sat himself beside his mother, “I am named after my late father.”
“Only Miriya is my biological daughter,” Jatan explained as he too took a seat, “but I adopted the other four after their father was killed and I married their mother.”
Tedak felt a pang of grief, as he was surrounded by young children, all of which were close to his late son's age. “I must apologise,” he murmured as he set down his empty cup. “I must leave now. I will come back in the morning, after I have reported what you have told me to admiral Lin.”
Sonak rose to her feet and walked him to the door. “It was...appreciated that you stopped by to listen ambassador,” she told him, “I would appreciate it if you would be able to keep me up to date on the investigation, if you are allowed to do so. You may tell the admiral that I have no intention of disobeying his order, but I would like to know what happened to my first officer. He was my responsebility, he should not be punished for following my orders.”
“I will pass along your concern,” the Romulan promised, bowed once more and departed, leaving the Vulcan alone with her troubled feelings. He did keep his promise, for as soon as he entered his quarters, he sent a transcript of his conversation with the commodore to Lin. “I do believe her,” he added to the message, “but I also believe she should remain confined, if not for her own safety.”

Paul Drew’s Office Starbase 47
“Really is a sorry state of affairs Paul, a sorry state of affairs.”
“You could say that Bill,” Drew replied, “am still not 100% certain how all this happened anyway.”
The man on Drew’s viewscreen let out a deep sigh, from his appearance it seemed that the Commander in Chief of Starfleet had not been getting much sleep lately. Drew noticed that his usual tidy hair was out of his place, there were bags under his eyes, and his uniform had the distant impression of having been slept in.
“There will be an investigation of course,” Commander in Chief Bill answered, while avoiding really answering Drew, “Magellan’ll take care of it am sure, he’s a good officer.”
“He is more than capable,” Drew agreed, “although I think Commodore Reckus will probably be giving him something of a nightmare, on top of the whole mess he has to deal with here already.”
“That one I keep hearing all the loud noises about?”
Drew gave his Commander in Chief an amused smile and nod.
“Anyway Paul,” Bill said, adapting a more official pose and tone of voice, “I didn’t call just to chat, what with the current crisis and all, we have decided to bring forward your new assignment, Nova could be tied up for months with this and we need to start getting back to business.”
Momentarily speechless, Drew just stared at the screen in surprise, then quickly remembered who he was talking to and snapped back to reality.
“I understand sir,” he replied, with a much more formal tone than before, “when did you have in mind?
“Effective immediately,” confirmed Bill, “you’re orders are being attached to this transmission, congratulations and good luck.”
“Thanks,” Drew said meekly as the transmission ended and the image on his screen returned to the Starfleet logo. This was quickly replaced with a menu system as Drew began keying in the commands to open his attachments; sure enough there was the document that Bill had mentioned. Taking a padd off from the pile on his desk, he synced the two devices and began downloading.
An hour later he was standing in a room that was filled with the senior staff of Starbase 47, the Nevada, the Vesuvius and the delegation from Starbase Assailant. Sonak had been unable to join the hastily arranged gathering, due to her confinement, but Drew had instructed that she be allowed to watch a holo transmission in her quarters. That holo transmission was also being transmitted to the whole of Section 47.
Standing at the podium that had been set up, Drew, flanked by Magellan, called for silence. He then activated the padd before and began to read:
“Admiral Paul Drew, you are hereby requested and required to assume full command and supervision of Section 47 effective immediately. Upon assuming this assignment, you will also be promoted to the rank of Section Admiral and enjoy all the privileges of that rank.
Signed Commander in Chief of Starfleet William Bailey, Stardate 94.1122.”
There was a moment of shocked silence, and then the gathered audience began to clap. Drew thanked them, told them all that he would be making further statements later, at a more appropriate time and stood down from the podium.
Magellan followed Drew down from the podium and said in a whisper: “I guess now you can stop calling me ‘sir’.”
Drew laughed, but then pulled Magellan to one side so that they could talk without anyone over hearing.
“A situation has developed with the USS Bartlet, the only ships close by are those here on SB47, as the Vesuvius cannot leave, I am going to take the Nevada out to deal with the situation.”
“I see,” Magellan replied slowly, “and what about here on SB47?”
“The C in C and I agree that you are capable of holding things together here, I am going to leave you in charge of the investigation and for now also in command of starbase.”
Magellan nodded his consent, albeit a reluctantly and asked when Drew and the Nevada would be leaving.
“As soon as I rally the troops,” Drew said, as he and Magellan walked back out into the crowd.
