as posted on yahoogroups, our missionplan. This mission will be led by lieutenant commander nephi jacobson. Please direct questions or guesting offers/requests to him.:
There is a nebula a few days travel (at high warp) from Starbase Bellicose. Lately, there have been reports of some usually effects within the nebula, mainly affecting the laws of physics. The Vesuvius is sent to investigate.
When we get there, we are suddenly accelerated beyond what our engines can do, and because of some fluctuations with the warp field, everything on the ship grows in size somewhat. (Don't worry about the technical details, I'll explain them in mission) But suddenly, for unexplained reasons, we come to a sudden halt. Because of it, the enlarged matter is split, and duplicates
Due to some properties of the nebula, the duplicated matter stays together, and we find duplicates of ourselves appearing next to us. Nephi will also come up with an explanation as to why the ship wasn't duplicated.
They will appear to be exactly like us, and upon talking to them, we'll discover they act exactly like us as well. Eventually they'll gain our trust.
But they've decieved us and this isn't an accident at all. They're really from a highly advanced culture capable of taking whatever form they wished, and they lured us hear to infiltrate the ship and make us believe it was an accident. Due to spying on us, they'll have learned enough about us to act like us, convincingly.
Once they gain our trust, they take over the ship. I will have a Guest playing Sonak's duplicate, who will lead the take-over. The rest of us will simm for our own duplicates, led by the Duplicate Sonak Guest. They are infiltrating Starfleet, and choose Vesuvius because we're such an advanced ship, and have a well-experienced, trusted crew.

Sonak walked out of sickbay, looking almost happy. Colour had returned to her face, and she was looking as healthy as ever. She glanced back over her shoulder and smiled at Jatan, who was once more engrossed in his work. While she had been off duty, by force and enforced by the medical department, Jatan had also taken some time off to spend with her and the children. However, him taking leave had left John Caldwell swamped with reports, and Jatan was now assisting in the catching up with the paperwork.
Pleased that after a month of revalidating, she was finally allowed back on duty, she took a walk around her ship. After a month of hard work, the ship's best engineers had managed to get the ship repaired in record time, and even two weeks ahead of schedule. The latest reports had told her that the Vesuvius was at last space worthy again, but Nephi had warned her that their warp capability was for now restricted to warp four, as they didn't want to risk a warp-core breach.
The damage done to the respective warp cores of each module had knocked the alignment off, and now they had to get realigned to one another again to work in synch. The same had happened to the cloaking device; it would work separately on each module, but when the ship was docked together, the cloak would not work for some mysterious reason.
Sonak walked onto the bridge and settled down in her seat. "Commander Fox, did you have a chance to look at the cloaking device yet?" she asked her chief of science, knowing that he'd be fascinated by looking into the problem. Though an engineering problem, she knew it was nothing Fox couldn't handle, and Nephi had enough to do as it was. Naturally, she could've asked Nick to see into it, but she needed him at the helm. As designer of the Somma class vessel, he knew the ship like no-one else, but knowing the ship inside out, and knowing how she reacted while flying was something esle.
<Fox>
The Vulcan commanding officer got to her feet as Admiral Hepta arrived, but sat back down again when he motioned for her to do so. Yet, she sat down in the first officer's seat, making room for the old admiral to sit down in the command chair. As ranking officer, she owed him that courtesy. Looking back over her shoulder, she noted Ensign Jackson standing smartly at the tactical console. "Tactical status Mr Jackson?" she enquired.
<Jackson....make anything up within reason>
To Hepta's left, Ensign Mira was monitoring environmental control, a task Sonak knew the new counselor could handly perfectly. At the front, Reman was sitting beside Nick, at the operations console. "Any word from Bellicose commander?" she asked him, as Nephi was busy in engineering, and she knew L'Ola was due to arrive soon. With both first officer and second officer absent from the bridge, and the task befalling on the operations officer to monitor communications anyway, she asked Reman.
<Reman>
"Welcome back aboard admiral," Sonak said, now directing her full attention to the old admiral, "I do hope we shall have a more pleasant trip than before, so that we have a chance for you to get to know the ship in other situations than combat. As you may have gathered, this is not just a tactical vessel, as we shall prove to you."
<Hepta>
Just as Hepta finished speaking, the first officer arrived on the bridge. WIth both seats taken, L'Ola sat down in the second officer's chair, which was normally Nephi's seat if he had bridge duty. "Had a good shoreleave commander?" Sonak asked innocently.
<Kanz>
Sonak tapped her combadge. "Engineering, what is our status?"
<Nephi>
Sonak smiled ever so slightly at his response. "Admiral, would you take us out?" she asked Hepta, then smirked at him. "Please do remember that in spacedoc we can only use thrusters." At his mock-insulted glare, she smiled innocently. "Just in case you had forgotten sir," she explained, but she didn't miss the sniggering sounds of the senior staff.

Nephi went around Engineering, checking various systems, making small adjustments. After he had done this with a few stations, the Engineers around the room just started stepping back from their consoles whenever he came near them, just in case.
Almost everything was in order. The cloaking device still needed work, but they could work on that in route. He had read the mission profile. A nebula in Federation space didn't warrant a cloak.
"Engineering, what is our status?" came the Commodore's voice over the comm.
"We're set to go, ma'am," he replied. "Like I said, don't go above Warp 4, but I should have that corrected with a day or so. The cloaking system as a whole isn't online yet, but in an emergency we could operate each module's cloak independent from the others, to hide the ship in three sections. Though that would be kind of odd, wouldn't it? For an enemy ship to see us disappear in sections. Would definitely through them for a loop."
The comm-channel closed a moment later, and he went back to his work. A few minutes later, Sarah came alongside him at a console to check something.
She looked over at him, then gaped at what she say. "Is that a gray hair??" she asked, staring at his head.
"Yes," he said, continuing to focus on his work.
"But why?" she exclaimed. "You're even younger than me!" she said, then stopped short, gasping. "Do I have any?"
Nephi chuckled. "You didn't strike me as someone that would be too concerned with that, Sarah. It's because of the stress I've been put under lately due to missions. Imprisonment, then Command; it builds up."
"Yeah, I can imagine," she replied.

Looking at his console, Fox snapped back from his thoughts when he heard Sonak call his name.
"Commander Fox, did you have a chance to look at the cloaking device yet?"
He shook his head. "It doesn't work yet. I'm looking at its technical details right now to get a bit more familiar with it."
Sonak nodded "Right, carry on Commander. Hope it's fixed soon, not sure if we might need it."
Fox turned back to his console, tabbed a few buttons to load the data on a pad. "I'll be in engineering then to look into it." he replied.
He left his station. A science officer immediately replaced him as he walked off the bridge. Not much later he stepped into main engineering.
There he saw Nephi and Sarah standing together at a console. He walked to them. "Where can i find the controls for our cloak he asked." having read much about the cloaking device, but not where it was located.
Nephi turned around. "Ah, Sonak told me you'd come." Pointing to a console on the other side of the room. "It's there, glad you're here to lighten our work a little."
Fox smiled while Nephi said that. "Thank you." he replied and walked over to the console.

'Any word from Bellicose commander?' Sonak asked 'I'll send it through to your console' Jared said, and did so 'Our orders are to investigate the nebula due to vaguely reported problems around it. It looks like a Fox mission both in determining what the problems actually are and how to deal with them. If possible we are to bring back samples if it's something tangible'. He had read it aloud as well for the benefit of anyone who was sitting nearby, or more precisely the old Admiral who may not have been able to read the orders but who probably wouldn't have wanted to let onto this even if he couldn't.
Jared wondered why this nebula was only now giving problems. It was in Federation space and so should have been looked into as soon as there were problems. If the problems were recent then the direct cause was probably recent. If so then the future didn't look rosy...

With Fox busy working on the cloak, just about the only major system that needed repair at present, Nephi turned his attention to this nebula, which he had heard through the grapevine that there were problems around it. Ensign Vates claimed that it termed everything inside-out, but he dismissed that.
He went over to the database, and began bringing up all the data recorded about it. The USS Jensing, a Nova-class, had been in the area, and reported that the very laws of physics were altered within the nebula. "Sarah, check this out," he called over to her.
"What is it," she asked, coming over. "Malfunction?"
"No, not at all. I've been looking over reports of this nebula we're going after. Matter and antimatter are somehow coexisting very close to each other, without being annihalated by the other."
"Incredible," she said, looking it over. "You must be rather curious. Didn't you minor in Physics in that Earth school you went to?"
"I did," he said, scanning the reports. "And it says here....whoa. Fox, come over here!"
"What?" he asked, walking over.
"If this is correct, the speed of light in the nebula has been increased beyond the excepted speed. As much as 2%." He tapped his commbadge. "Engineering to Bridge. We found some interesting reports on our nebula...."

"Had a good shoreleave commander?"
L'Ola nodded slowly and leant over, "I'll tell you about it after this shift's over, okay?" she asked very quietly.
Sonak was more than happy to wait, as it obviously meant that something interesting had happened.
The First Officer sat flicking through some information on a PADD. It contained the duty rosters for the following week. With so many officers changing position at every level, scheduling was a nightmare.
"Computer, please send a message to Commander Jacobson reminding him that there are new crewmembers working in Engineering next shift."
"Message sent"
*Okay, so they can go there and then that leaves...* "Uh oh"
Sonak looked over, "Uh oh what?"
L'Ola half smiled, because it was either that or scream. She lowered her voice, "Our new Security Chief could have fun. With all the transfers we're kind of short staffed in that department. And most of the people we do have have been here 3 months tops. 2 new crewmembers."
"I'm sure you'll make it work. Maybe you should talk to Ensign Jackson about this."
"I will do straight after the Briefing."
"What briefing?"
This time she actually smiled, "The one you're going to call as soon as we set off. Speaking of which, when are we leaving?"

"Taking us out," Nick reported as the space dock doors passed by on the main screen. He punched in the coordinates for the nebula. "Course set in."
"Ahead at warp 4 Mr. Martens." Hepta ordered.

As you may have gathered, this is not just a tactical vessel, as we shall prove to you." </snip>
"I'm looking forward to it, Commodore. After all, Starfleet's goal is still to explore in peace." Too bad so many other races and organizations didn't have that goal. Heck, even within Starfleet not everyone did. "I'm not a scientist, but I know how to appreciate a scientific problem. This nebula sounds very interesting."
<snip from Sonak> "Admiral, would you take us out?" she asked Hepta, then smirked at him. "Please do remember that in spacedoc we can only use thrusters." At his mock-insulted glare, she smiled innocently. "Just in case you had forgotten sir," she explained, but she didn't miss the sniggering sounds of the senior staff. </snip>
"Really, Commodore," Hepta said, slightly miffed. "I may be old, but I'm not senile." That elicited another round of snickers from the bridge crew. "And I'm not deaf, either. Now be quiet, or I will take us out at impulse." Cmdr. Martens, who should be worried most, merely grinned. Hepta shook his head in resignation. This crew was nuts. He should have gone right back to Bellicose the first time he saw Sonak smile; an emotional Vulcan was never a good sign. Well, too late for that now. "Forward on thrusters, Commander."
"I can do it on impulse, if you like, Admiral," Martens said, still smirking. To Hepta's right, Sonak resolutely shook her head. As odd as she was for a Vulcan, she at least had some sense.
"Thrusters will be fine, Commander," Hepta said.
"Aye, sir." The Vesuvius slowly started moving and Hepta sat back in his chair. It was always an awesome sight, a starship leaving dock.
<snip from Nick> "Taking us out," Nick reported as the space dock doors passed by on the main screen. He punched in the coordinates for the nebula. "Course set in."
"Ahead at warp 4 Mr. Martens." Hepta ordered. </snip>
"Speed set, sir," Martens confirmed.
Hepta looked at Sonak. "Off to a successful mission, I hope, Commodore." He turned back to Martens. "Engage!"

"Nobody claimed that you were senile admiral," Sonak said sweetly, as she winked at her first officer. On the main viewscreen, the stars turned into streaks as the Vesuvius jumped to work. "Nice work Mr Martens," Sonak commented, as the former first officer and chief engineer sat back in his chair for a moment.
She turned back to her first officer. "About that briefing, has Starfleet sent us any more information on that nebula?"
<Kanz>
The Vulcan tapped her combadge. "Bridge to Fox, have you discovered anything on our nebula yet?"
<Fox/Jacobson>
She sat back in her chair. "Thank you Mr Fox. Bridge out." She tapped her combadge again to disconnect the comlink. "It seems we are going to have a briefing after all people. Report to briefing room one in an hour, and bring any data that can add to this briefing. Ms Kanz, you will conduct this briefing."
<Kanz>
Turning back to look over her shoulder, she stared at the security chief. "Mr Jackson, would you please deal with our new transfers? Commander Kanz will give you all the details you will need."
<Jackson>
Over at environmental controls, Mira Syal sat looking a little bored. Sonak noticed this and walked over to her. "Ensign, perhaps you could provide me with the crew's psychological assessments? Anyone who does not fit your tests may not go on away teams. Please conduct the tests as you see fit and when you see fit. Anyone complaining may file their complaints with me, you will not take no for an answer, understood?"
<Mira>
Sonak smiled ever so slightly. "Why not start with Admiral Hepta?" she whispered, "I doubt he has had any evaluations recently. He may be old, and not senile, but he will not evade ship protocol; not on my ship."

<snip from Sonak> Over at environmental controls, Mira Syal sat looking a little bored. Sonak noticed this and walked over to her. </snip>
Hepta was still sitting in the command chair, and feeling a little awkward at it. He'd hardly commanded a ship anymore since his promotion to Admiral many years ago, so why start again now? For that matter, why was he on the Vesuvius again? Well, of course he knew, but it really made no sense. At times, he really didn't understand himself. Maybe he was getting a bit senile...
Sonak was at the environmental console, talking with the ship's counsellor about psychological evaluations. The Commodore seemed very adamant that every member of the crew undergo one, and Hepta had a strong feeling he wouldn't be excluded. She'd had him go through a physical as well, after all.
The conversation apparently finished, Sonak went on to another station and Mira came Hepta's way. He heaved a small sigh. He wasn't just not getting excluded, he was actually first on her list.
"Admiral?"
She looked and sounded rather friendly, but that hardly made things better. Wasn't there a regulation somewhere that got retired Section Admirals off the hook? Probably not, he answered himself. Well, let's get this over with then. He looked up at her, not making any effort to hide his lack of enthusiasm.
"Yes, Ms. Mira?"

From her vantage point on the Bridge, Syal had a good view of the bridge crew and, of course, the Admiral. She sat there doing her work; environmental controls. It was easy enough for her, as she’d had a similar job before - although not for a very long time.
She saw this as a perfect opportunity to begin her real work. Crew evaluations. She grinned evilly to herself. This would, of course, have to be done in some part with their knowledge, but Syal believed in a newer way of thinking; that people were most natural and most themselves when they didn’t know they were being observed. It saved them from stressing themselves and their pagh - which was always a good thing.
She looked around the bridge. It was very quiet, people just going about their business. She heard the Commodore and Admiral talking and decided to listen in for a little while…
She made notes at her station for use later:
Admiral Hepta: * "I may be old, but I'm not senile." - over defensive of not being senile? * Seems to be playing up to the stereotype of an old man - his true personality? * His sarcasm etc could be due to a sense of uselessness?
Commodore Sonak: * Emotional Vulcan?? * Human upbringing. * Informal relationship with crewmembers.
She was just looking around to the other members of the crew, making a mental note to keep an eye on the laughing Vulcan Commodore - something about that just didn’t seem right - when said person approached her.
"Ensign, perhaps you could provide me with the crew's psychological assessments? Anyone who does not fit your tests may not go on away teams. Please conduct the tests as you see fit and when you see fit. Anyone complaining may file their complaints with me, you will not take no for an answer, understood?"
Deciding against telling Sonak that she had already started, Syal merely nodded. “Of course.” She smiled slyly.
Sonak smiled ever so slightly. "Why not start with Admiral Hepta?" she whispered, "I doubt he has had any evaluations recently. He may be old, and not senile, but he will not evade ship protocol; not on my ship."
Syal laughed lightly. “Alright, I’ll start at the top…you’re next by the way.” She picked up her PADD and made her way to Hepta.
“Admiral?” ~Did he just shudder?~ She thought briefly.
“Yes, Ms Mira?” He sighed, somewhat dramatically in her opinion. ~He obviously doesn’t like counsellors…~ She mused.
“I’d like to ask you a few questions, if you don’t mind…” <Tag Hepta>
“Yes, well…I’m afraid I have to do this anyway..” She smiled slightly.
“Could you tell me a little about yourself, perhaps? I have read your information, obviously, but I’d like to hear it from you…”
<Tag Hepta>
“So how was your retirement?”
<Tag Hepta>
“Did you do much to alleviate this sense of boredom and frustration?”
<Tag Hepta>
Syal smiled. She could tell that he was hating every minute of this, but it was her job after all.
OOC: Sorry for the wait, I don’t seem to be able to stay logged in…anyway, I will do more questions when you respond to these :-D (don’t look too happy ;-)

Fox joined Nephi at his console, looking at the readings. His jaw dropped from amazement. "But that is impossible." he said.
Nephi nodded. "I know." he said and tabbed his comm-badge. "Nephi to Bridge."
Letting Nephi report his findings to Sonak, Fox still stared at the console. When Nephi was done Fox turned to him again. "We really need to study this phenomenon." Nephi agreed with him.
Not much later a briefing call reached them ordering them to be in briefing room one in 1 hour. "I'll get this on padds for during the meeting." Fox said to Nephi and started to get the padds ready.
55 Minutes later both men showed up in the briefing room.

Just as they were about to leave for the Briefing, Ensign Vallard approached Nephi. "What can I do for you, Ensign?"
"Sir, I've just noticed a slight variance in our long-range communication system. I can't explain how it got there, and I haven't been able to clear it up."
"Did it just come up?" he asked, intrigued by such a problem.
"No sir," Vallard replied. "Records indicate it's been there for at least a few weeks."
"I wonder why Starbase Engineering, and we for that matter, didnt pick it up till now."
"I had to run a Level 5 diagnostic. We typically don't do that on the Communications systems," Vallard noted.
"Then we'll need to make that policy change," he said, but then thought a moment. "Correction, you need to make that policy change, given that you're the Comms specialist. Now, I have to get to a Briefing."
He and Fox then proceeded to the Briefing room.

Sonak waited until everyone was seated, and she took special notice of the fact that Nephi was one of the first to enter the briefingroom, followed on his heels by Fox. Once everyone was seated, she got back to her feet.
"As you all are most likely aware of by now," she began, "we are in route towards a nebula a short distance away."
She tapped a few keys at her console after which an image appeared on the wall panel. "And here it is; 2 lightyears long, 1 lightyear across. There have been reports of rather unusual activity within and immediately around it with regards to the physical laws governing it. As reported by Commanders Fox and Jacobson, somehow matter and antimatter seem to be able to coexist without destroying one another, and light travels at 2% higher than the accepted constant speed within said nebula."
"And," Nephi added. "Because of the matter in this nebula, light shouldn't even be able to travel at the speed of light, and of course, travelling faster than that is accepted as impossible."
"And therefor," Sonak continued, "our assignment is to investigate this anomaly, and investigate the extent of what goes on within it."
She paused for a few seconds. "This is a unique scientific discovery," she concluded, "and it is a perfect opportunity to test our sensor upgrades and brand-new scientific equipment. Are there questions?"

"Are there questions?" Sonak asked inquisitively of her command staff, all of whom had sat there attentively, save one. He sat with the chair backward between his legs and swayed side to side. His left eye twitched slightly and he'd developed a slight tick. He raised his hand.
"Why is it that we're always the ones sent on these crazy missions? Seriously, why would we investigate a phenomenon that would let us watch out Toast toast faster? " Everyone kind of looked at him bemused. He twitched slightly in his chair and brushed a hand through his goatee. "Don't you think command could send like the Avenger so we could stay home and have tea?
<Sonak or anyone else>
The meeting adjourned and everyone wandered back to their posts. Nick slowly sauntered back to his 'Hell-m' station. ~Fly the ship they tell me. Fly it faster they tell me. Fly it slower they tell me.~ He visibly shuddered and sat down in his seat. He shifted around uncomfortably and made a mental note to get comfier chairs for the helm stations at the next dry-docking.
A couple hours later the bridge was just shutting down into night shift. Crew members traded posts and exchanged greetings and some small talk. His replacement approached him and he just waved her off and checked his readings.
"But sir this is your fifth shift. You need a break," She disputed. He still waved her away with a simple glare. "You're health I guess." She muttered as she walked away.
This was his payment, his penance for not seeing that his wife was crazy, for not being a good enough father and raising Yannis in a safe environment. Now she lays in a facility on Tandar undergoing surgeries and treatments in a hope to some day help her walk again. And his payment for all this was to encounter the Cardassians and now sit at a helm station.
His console let out a series of beeps shocking him out of his fog. He let out a scream and pulled himself back down into his chair. Ensign Mason sat next to him with a big grin on her face.
"A wee bit jumpy are ye. Just relax it means we're at out destination." She smiled, he blushed and hit the intercom button.
"Commodore Sonak to the bridge. We've arrived at the ummm Nebula."
"Thank you Commander."

"We are sent on these crazy missions as you term them, because we are the crew best suited for these kind of missions," Sonak answered him, wondering where this had come from all of a sudden. "Tea commander?" she then querried, "why, you can drink all the tea you like when you are off duty. But to answer your question, the Avenger is currently assigned elsewhere and has orders to prevent a civil war on one of the Federation's colonies near the Klingon border."
She glanced around the room, and rested her gaze on each officer for a few seconds to take in their expressions. She noticed that some faces held the same curious expression as her navigator was holding and she wondered if this was going to form a problem. ~I will have to have a little talk with Commander Martens at the nearest opportunity."
~~~
Sonak wandered around in her quarters, carrying 6-year old Sevus in her arms. The boy's forehead was warm to the touch and his eyes were gleaming feverishly. The boy sobbed quietly, and eventually stuck his thumb into his mouth. His mother gently ran a hand through his hair as she held him close.
Closeby, his twin stood glancing at them curiously, a worried frown masking her face. "Mother, is he going to be all right?" T'Kimi asked, her voice filled with worry.
Sonak looked down at her eldest daughter. "He is just a little sick T'Kimi," she said softly, "but he will get better. Why do you not go play with Shanna and Seliv at the daycare center while I take care of your brother?"
While T'Kime took her younger siblings to the daycare center, Sonak continued to try and comfort her eldest son. She didn't want to take him to sickbay, knowing that Jatan would be too busy to keep an eye on him. She didn't want to call Nanny either, feeling that she herself should spend more time with her children.
Just then Martens' voice sounded over the intercom. "Commodore Sonak to the bridge. We've arrived at the ummm Nebula."
"Thank you Commander," she replied, and briefly wondered whether she should call Nanny after all. "I am on my way," she continued, "Sonak out." After a brief consideration, she carried her son with her up to the bridge, and settled him in the command chair.
"He is ill," she explained briefly, "and I did not wish to leave him by himself." She looked around and faced Commander Jared. "Report," she told him, "what kind of nebula is it, and is it of any type we have encountered before?"
<Jared>
During Jared's answer, she tapped her combadge. "Commander Fox, report to the bridge!" she called, "we have work to do here for you."
<Fox>
Realizing that she was also still waiting for the crew evaluation reports, she also paged the counselor. "Ensign, what is keeping those evaluation reports?"
<Mira>
"Ensign Jackson, I want you to have your security teams at alert, just in case something is hiding in that nebula that we cannot see. In addition, I want you to prepare to activate the cloaking device on Commander Jared's say-so. Understood?"
<Jackson>
'Report,' Sonak said 'what kind of nebula is it, and is it of any type we have encountered before?'
Ooh, a tricky one. 'Well considering the unique nature of this nebula, there is no type for it besides 'purple-blue'. We need to categorise it whilst investigating it since no other nebula known has these properties. One thing that can be seen is that our sensors don't go too far into it, so we can't expect them to be too much use in there for seeing a long way ahead. Sensor blinding nebulae have been seen, as have ones which for whatever reason distort spacial properties, but never in a combination like this. However, those spacially anomalous ones were hiding things which were the cause since it's never before been seen in the character of an actual nebula to distort things so much. Possibly Mr Fox and Mr Jacobson could find a way for our sensors to penetrate the fog more and maybe also find a likely reason for the distortions. Also, whoever's piloting at the time needs to remember that we're seeing things before they're as close as we'd expect. So far I think we could categorise this preliminarily as a tridentally distorting nebula due to the multiple distortions caused by it. The term is an old one and hasn't been used for a long time since ships are now generally able to freely investigate nebulae, but I think it applies well here.
On another note for crew safety, I would recommend that a possibly virally unwell child not be brought on the bridge lest the senior staff all end up incapacitated by the virus. He needs to be tested in sickbay to make sure that it is not contagious'
The last bit hadn't been necessary for the informtion of the crew, but Jared was damned if he was going to end up in sickbay with some virus he didn't need to catch in the first place. The fact the child was a different species reduced his chance of catching it, as did his rather healthy immune system, but he still didn't want to take the chance. Speaking of chance, Martens didn't look too well and Jared didn't think it would be wise for them to be relying on the reactions and clear thinking of a man who probably wasn't too well in either department right now. Jared decided to mention it to Mira when she came round to him with the evaluations, if she didn't see to Martens first.
Sonak cradled her still whimpering son as she shot a sharp glance at her chief of operations. "Sevus has been examined by Doctor Caldwell and myself, and the virus he has contracted is not contagious to adults," she told him, more sharply than was necessary. "And rest assured, my son knows not to touch anything if he does not know what it is going to do. He is a bright child for his age, there is nothing to worry about. He will mainly sleep now, until he gets better."
She held her child closer, almost protectively. "Meanwhile, do you think it is safe to take a closer look at that nebula?"
<Reman/Fox>
"Very well, send out a probe and alert engineering that we are going to take a closer look."
<Reman/Nephi/Kanz>
"Commander Martens, ahead at full impulse. Take us to the edge of that nebula and prepare to have a probe launched!"
Hm, touchy, Jared thought. She should really have announced that it was non-contagious to the crew when she explained his presence. Having the possibility of a virus going around isn't a good thing on an enclosed space on something like a starship and so wouldn't have helped morale.
Sonak held her child closer, almost protectively. 'Meanwhile, do you think it is safe to take a closer look at that nebula?' 'From a ship point of view then it should be safe enough. We can always turn around if things become too hairy' Hairy like the CNO at least, he thought. We're trusting him to take us into a dangerous situation?!? 'We can't be sure it's entirely safe, but then that's true of anything. We should probably scan our entry point with a probe to make sure we're not just going to crash directly into anything as soon as we enter. Ironically, once we're in we can be more sure of the water.'
'Very well, send out a probe and alert engineering that we are going to take a closer look.'
Jared selected the probe with the best medium range sensors. Anything nearby should be easy enough to see for it and they didn't need to worry about the far away quite yet.
'Bridge to Engineering. We're going into the nebula but we don't know for sure what's inside. Keep an eye on the systems in case we need a fast escape'
<Engineering>
The probe's reports came back.
'So far the probe hasn't seen anything that we don't already know. The good news is that there are no large bodies or alien battlefleets to crash into so far.'
'Commander Martens, ahead at full impulse. Take us to the edge of that nebula and prepare to have a probe launched!'
Jared assumed she meant a long range probe this time for seeing further into the nebula once they were inside and so he set one to be ready in the launcher. He could also hear the vaguely distressed noise coming from the child sitting on Sonak's lap so he sent a message to her console from his since there wasn't anything needing doing at exactly that second. 'Cheer up, you'll be better soon :-)' it said. Jared accompanied it with the command to make the receiving console's message section flash in the dim way that was all they seemed to be able to manage. Hopefully he would read it.
"Bridge to Engineering. We're going into the nebula but we don't know for sure what's inside. Keep an eye on the systems in case we need a fast escape."
"Acknowledged, Commodore," Nephi replied. "I've allotted extra processing power to the Computer to analyze everything we bring in, and I've got everyone I can spare that has any related background studying this thing."
While the majority of his staff were busy studying the nebula, Nephi condensed all the necessary readings onto his console. Everything he needed was there: Warp core output, reactor output, current speed, relative position. Everything was normal at present.
But then he noticed some odd readings. They were going at Full Impulse straight into the nebula, and not only were they not slowing down, they were speeding up!
He hit his commbadge. "Engineering to Bridge. I know you wanted to be able to make a fast escape, but if you are, it's in the wrong direction, and is beyond recommended Impulse speed."
A few moments later, the reply came back. "We don't how we are," Sonak replied, "Commander Martens didn't input this speed."
Nephi brought up Helm input readings alongside everything else. They were right. He attempted to shut down the Impulse reactors, but it had no effect. They continued to accelerate. "And I can't stop us," Nephi said. "Attempting overload of Impulse engines. This will take a while to repair, but it will stop us."
He attempted the overload, but nothing happened. He looked at the speed gauge. It was reading 0.85c! "Bridge, we've just past beyond the limits of Impulse. This isn't our engines. Now approaching 90% the speed of light."
He looked at the map. They were curving back toward the edge of the nebula. But according to the Helm input, they were still going in a straight line.
As they reached the edge of the nebula, they were suddenly thrown to a halt. But instead of everyone being thrown against the floor or walls by such sudden deceleration, something odd happened.
Next to each person, an odd cloud of matter formed. As it came together, it formed a complete copy of that person. Nephi looked in shock, as he found a duplicate of himself standing next to him, looking back at him.
"Okay, now this is odd," Nephi's duplicate said.
"Indeed," Nephi replied. They both looked around the room. Everyone had been duplicated.
Nephi tapped his commbadge. "Engineering to Bridge, we have a bit down here."
"Helm, come to full stop!" Sonak ordered, as the ship continued to accelerate, but nothing Nick tried would work.
Then the ship, without action from the navigator, came to an abrupt full stop, but miraculously everyone remained on their feet. "What was that?" Sonak asked, looking around at her senior staff. "Fox, report, what caused us to stop, did we run into something?"
<Fox>
"Well then, start-," she stopped abruptly when something appeared beside her out of nothing. "What...." she started again, as she gazed directly at the person beside her, who looked exactly like her. "Who are you?"
<duplicate sonak>
Then Nephi's voice came over the intercom, sounding rather surprised as he reported they had a situation down in engineering. "Acknowledged commander, we are facing the same problem. Bridge out."
Sonak turned back to her mirror image, and regarded her in silence, wondering just what was going on.
Glimpsing over her bridge, she perceives there are two of her. “I am Commodore Sonak Reckus, commanding officer of the USS Vesuvius, but what I don’t comprehend is why has this ensued, engineering report.” She retorts with the concluding part into her commbadge.
<Nephi duplicate>
“I understand, very well, keep me informed.” She responds turning to her accompanying identity. “I consider it wise if we attempt to go about our business conferring with one another, although since I am you and you are me, we almost certainly already know what the other’s standpoint is.” She articulates implementing logic to illustrate her position.
<Sonak>
This won’t be so atrocious, and it most likely won’t take an excessive amount of time either. She reasons.
"Engineering report.” came the simple order.
The Duplicate Nephi answered. "Well, basically I was working at my console, keeping an eye on everything, when we came to a halt. I was thrown a few feet to the side, and a copy of me appeared where I originally was. We might be able to figure out who's the original, but that might take some time."
“I understand, very well, keep me informed.”
Nephi turned to his duplicate. "I believe you are the copy, actually. I saw a cloud of matter appear next to me, from which you coalesced."
"Computer, which of Commanders Jacobson is the original? Is it me or the other Commander Jacobson?" The duplicate asked.
"Unknown," came the reply.
"Well, its time to determine whether you're actually a copy of me," Nephi said. He thought a moment, then said, "The first time I drank the blood of a seal, how much did I enjoy it?"
"I didn't," the duplicate answered. "I grimaced because I found it pungent."
"I've rarely told anyone that story," Nephi said in surprise. "I guess you are me."
A moment later, Sarah, Carl and their duplicates approached the two Nephi's. "It appears one of us is each an exact clone of the other, right down to memories," Sarah reported.
"So I've noticed," Nephi said, looking at his duplicate. "We need to figure out what's happened here."
<OOC Sorry this is really really late, but at least it's here finally...>
"Computer, increase the volume of the music by 50%"
The computer complied, and if it wasn't for a forcefield dampening the sound from the room her next-door neighbours would have been banging on the walls.
Smiling a little, Kanz sat back in her chair and flicked through the reports. She made it a habit to do that before reading them properly so that she knew how long they were. The longest reports were left til the last possible minute. And if they reached a certain length she had got into the habit of sending a message back asking for a summary.
It was obviously working, as even the busiest departments had only a few things to say. She might have even read them all properly then if she'd had chance.
"We have reached our desired destination." The computer said.
Kanz grinned and put the pile of PADDs down, "Thanks computer. Remind me to make you sound happy one day."
This was too much for the monotone to handle, "Please rephrase the question."
Putting her jacket on, she rolled her eyes, "Don't worry about it. Save the current music settings as standard and stop playback." With that she left her quarters and started wandering in the direction of the Bridge.
On her way she ran into Ensign Collins, who was looking more than a little preoccupied. "Hey Jamie, what's up? Anything I can help with?"
"I'm not sure, Commander, I'm having problems figuring these results out. He showed her the diagrams he'd been looking at, "I thought if I went for a walk it might clear my head and they'd make more sense, but this is the third lap that I've done."
Kanz had a look at the data, "Wow, that does look weird. If I was you I'd go find Commander Fox, we've reached the nebula anyway so he shouldn't mind being brought on duty." She was about to say something else when the pair of them were duplicated.
Five minutes later both versions of the first officer arrived on the Bridge. "I'm guessing this is a shipwide problem that no one has a reason for or solution to yet" the duplicate said, looking around.
Everyone else nodded. Things could be chaotice for a while.
Jared sat in his quarters waiting patiently. He'd managed to shake his clone off an hour earlier and had been getting ready for another lesson.
Right on cue the door chime sounded. "Computer, unlock and open the door." Kanz stepped into the room. "Computer, relock the door."
The pair sat down and talked, as they had done more and more before each lesson. "I can't believe how long it took me to shake my double off. Eventually I persuaded her to go find your double and have her own lesson."
"At least we know that both of us are the genuine articles" Jared pointed out, "It must be an inconvenience at the moment for those friends that can't be sure."
"That's true I suppose. At least the shift's finally finished. I thought it would never end. Now, what are you going to teach me today?"
Kanz's telepathic abilities were better than she realised, but Jared had not yet encouraged her to tap into that source. As long as she thought she needed help, he would get to teach her.
