Nika had realized the importance of having the Captain's office throughout the shore leave. If she tried to work on mission reports and crew rosters when she was on the bridge she was struck too much by how empty it was. After all, no one else needed to be at their position when the ship wasn't going anywhere, except for the occasional engineer who had to make console repairs.
This time tomorrow though, Nika knew the new mission would be beginning. She hadn't received word from Starfleet command yet though what the new mission was, but she was expecting it soon, since she had been told to have her crew prepare to leave Assailant at 10:00 tomorrow.
About half an hour later, Nika glanced up again at the console, looking for a blinking new message light in case she had somehow missed a communication. She hadn't, but as she was refocusing her attention on a PADD in front of her she heard the incoming communication noise.
Nika leaned forward to press the button to accept the communication, and the image resolved into Admiral Ward. “Captain Cir'Kem,” he greeted her.
Nika tilted her head fractionally. “Yes sir.” she replied.
“I have your next mission assignment for you,” he said.
“That's good news,” Nika replied, wondering when the Admiral was going to tell her what the mission actually was.
“Tell me that in five minutes,” Admiral Ward answered, smiling slightly. “The Victory is being assigned to visit a diplomatic conference.”
Nika's confusion must have been rather evident, but Ward didn't clarify anything. “Why the Victory, sir? Surely there are better ships with higher-ranked captains?” To Nika an acting captain seemed like a poor choice for anything diplomatic.
“Yes. Well, certain members of the Federation think this might be a good opportunity for you.”
“For me?” Nika repeated.
“Ah, yes. What with your planet not being a Federation member and with you being Starfleet...”
“You think I can convince Firont to join the Federation?” Nika asked, suddenly understand what this was about.
“Yes,” Ward confirmed.
“What part of 'isolationist' is unclear?” Nika asked.
“It won't hurt to go to the conference. Besides, having an Acting Captain or recently promoted Captain invited to a diplomatic conference is quite usual, it will give you a chance to practice your diplomatic skills.”
Nika frowned, she was sure her diplomatic skills were atrocious, and the last diplomatic mission she had gone on had involved one of crew being accused of murder for eating a nut and Nika having to die her hair blonde and put blue contacts in her eyes. All things considered, it hadn't been much fun.
Nika nodded though, accepting the mission assignment. Admiral Ward transferred the coordinates of the planet where the conference was going on to the Victory and Nika closed the channel. Once the channel had been closed for a while Nika realized that a diplomatic mission might give the crew a chance to recuperate more from the last mission. It would be, if not precisely an extended shore leave since they would no doubt have to interact with diplomats and representatives from other cultures, less stressful than being fired at.
~~~~~~
The next day, Nika entered her office and worked on a duty roster for a while, before tapping her commbadge. </\>Captain Cir'Kem to all hands. The Victory leaves dock in two hours, please be at your assigned station by then.</\>
She then sat down at the center seat on the still-empty bridge and waited for the staff to arrive.
When the two hours, plus a little extra, had passed Nika gave the coordinates to Lieutenant Arika. “Warp 5,” Nika ordered.
"Cmdr Matthew to the Bridge," came a voice over the inter comm. system, breaking the silence and sleep that James had wanted to get.
“Getting up, he looked out and saw the Victory start undocking from the station. he got his uniform on with in two minutes and was running towards the turbo lift still zipping up his shirt. Arriving, the Victory had just finished undocking from the station and was pulling away.
“The Victory started heading away from the station once cleared Enter Warp “
“Cmdr Matthew enter on to the main bridge reported in to the captain before taking his station ‘ Thinking to him self well that was a short leave I wonder what this mission will be we left the Space Dock Fast enough must be something important.
*Tiffani was running late and quickly made her way to the bridge, she had slept to long and was now suffering from it, she rubbed her eyes as she entered the turbolift and ordered it to the Bridge
Bridge *she stated and it quickly glided on it's path stopping at her location, the doors swished open and before her appeared the command center of the Victory, she smiled and walked onto the bridge noticing not all the Command staff was present yet. she smiled at the Captain as she took her seat*
So what does Starfleet have instore for us this time? *she questioned as she was leaned overlyspeaking to the Captain*
“A mission filled with danger and excitement,” Nika responded sarcastically, quietly. Then more loudly, as a general announcement to everyone on the bridge, she continued. “It's a diplomatic conference.”
Tiffani didn't look terribly enthused about the news, but both Nika and Tiffani knew, at least in abstract, that it was better for the Federation as a whole if there were more diplomatic missions. Although Nika had thought the purpose of diplomats and ambassadors to take care of those.
Half an hour after the ship had left Assailant, Nika noticed that everyone who should be on the bridge was. She tapped her commbadge. </\>Captain Cir'Kem to senior staff, there will be a mission briefing in an hour in the conference room</\>
Nika then glanced at an updated ship roster that she had received; it appeared that Ensign Rogers had transferred off the Victory, and right now Nika hadn't heard whether Starfleet Command would assign her a new Chief Medical Officer or if Lieutenant Commander Daniels would be promoted to fill that position. But since Commander Daniels was second in command of sickbay it made sense for her to fill the position of CMO until a more permanent solution was reached.
Nika stood up from the chair, indicated to Tiffani that she was in command of the bridge, and went into her ready room, the doors closing behind her. Nika then tapped her commbadge again.
</\>Nika to Commander Daniels</\> she said.
</\>Commander Daniels here</\> came the reply.
</\>I'm sure you're aware of Ensign Daniel's transfer off of the Victory. I don't know yet whether we will be receiving a replacement or you will be permanently taking his position, but I would like you to, at the least, temporarily fill the position of Chief Medical Officer. Which means that you're invited to the mission briefing in the conference room that will be starting in an hour.</\>
Nika knew that as soon as Commander Daniels found out the mission was diplomatic and that, as the Acting Chief Medical Officer, she would be expected to interact and work with the negotiations, Kaylee would be rather less pleased.
Tiffani raised an eyebrow slightly, How fun she thought to herself, she knew that most the Diplomatic missions on the Victory never went well, she only hoped this case would be different. Surely having someone who is from that same race onboard would make things easier she thought once more to herself before coming out of thought when the Captain spoke up, she nodded *Understood* she watched the officers on the bridge bustle about as they prepared for the next mission. It was going to be interesting to say the very least, she made note to see the Counselor once more before the mission got underway, it was going to be hard, not having Amilea around, it was bad enought without Felix, but Amilea gone to she knew she would be spending more time on the bridge and lest time in her Quarters <Tag anyone, feel free to approach, promise i won't bite ya head off >
Kae had been working on some of the crew's records from the last physical to update the last of them when suddenly she heard the captain's voice.
Kae hadn't expected such information, and wondered what this was going to be like. She turned back to her work, and hoped to get these finished in the next hour.
The walk hadn't taken too much time, and Kae was still working through a checklist in her head hoping she hadn't forgotten anything that might be needed during this briefing. She stepped inside the briefing room, and found she wasn't the first there. Kae was glad she wasn't the last one in though. ~Being ten minutes early is good, but not good enough to beat the captain here.~
"Sorry, ma'am, I don't mean to disturb. I can wait outside if you would prefer," Kae said hoping she wouldn't be told to leave since she was so early.
Nika performed a quick checkup when she walked through the bridge that there wasn't anything that needed her attention, before she walked to the conference room. She had arrived a little early, but this way she thought she would show her availability if anyone wanted a chance to talk with her individually. It would also prevent her from being late to the briefing she had called and keep everyone waiting. Should that happen it would be a waste of everyone's time.
Nika had pulled out a PADD, and was reading a book for amusement. She had caught up with most of the paperwork that was a necessary part of any mission, and knew she would be easier to interrupt if she wasn't trying to muddle through the few last forms.
Nika hadn't been sitting long when the ACMO entered the conference room, and looked around. "Sorry, ma'am, I don't mean to disturb. I can wait outside if you would prefer."
“Not necessary,” Nika said, smiling, responding to Kaylee's invitation to leave. “Please, sit down,” Nika gestured to a seat, and Kaylee sat.
Nika became aware of Kaylee fidgeting a little, seeming a little uneasy, and Nika realized that the silence had probably stretched longer than was culturally common for humans. Nika suppressed her sigh, since she would have been quite content to sit in silence. This constant forgetfulness of cultural difference was just one of many reasons she was not going to be a good diplomat.
Nika smiled slightly at Kaylee. *Did you enjoy your shore leave?* Nika thought about asking, but that would doubtless lead back to questions about Nika's own enjoyment of the R&R, or the fact that Nika had had to order Kaylee to go off duty. “How goes sickbay?” Nika asked instead, inwardly wondering whether the rest of the senior staff would be on time.
Kaylee took a seat where she thought she should be sitting at the table. She found the silence was good for reading, and while doing so Kae became a little nervous and started to figet a little while reading.
She looked up from her padd and over to the captain. "Things are going well enough. I don't know if possible, but any chance on hearing a little bit on what is going on with the next mission?" Kae asked figuring she wouldn't get anything out of the captain, but decided to ask anyways.
"Wow, I didn't think you would say anything to that. So, did you enjoy your leave?"
Nika realized that Kaylee hadn't been on the bridge, so hadn't heard the little explanation Nika had given most everyone else. “It's diplomatic,” Nika said, inclining her head ever so slightly, and looking for Kaylee's response. Kaylee didn't seem to be fully satisfied with the answer, but surprised that she had gotten an answer at all.
“Did you enjoy your shore leave?” Kaylee asked. Nika couldn't understand why Kaylee asked the question. It was unlikely Kaylee actually wanted a very involved story, and Nika wasn't sure that she could have given one even if she knew for sure that was what Kaylee had wanted. Nika guessed that Kaylee would have to settle more a short answer, which was truly all anyone got out of Nika anyway.
Nika contemplated how she could answer that; there were a variety of answers she could give, all of them equally true, in their own way. Of course, she had wanted to avoid having to make this decision completely. Nika had received a short message from one her sisters, that somehow seemed to say absolutely nothing at all. And Nika still hadn't heard back the answer to the question she had sent. If she coupled that with the fact that she had spent most of her shore leave alone, she wouldn't say she had precisely enjoyed herself.
“I suspect it was a good deal less relaxing than it should have been; entirely too much paperwork,” Nika explained. “You?” After all, it was the most obvious way to continue the conversation, and Nika did wonder whether Kaylee's enjoyment of her shore leave had increased or decreased after Nika had suggested the doctor leave sickbay and relax some.
John went over to the security console and began doing scans on : Weapons Shields and what evr else that had to do with the security of the ship.
Kaylee hoped the captain wouldn't have asked that.
"Well until I was interrupted, I was working steady on inventory several days in a row. Then, I got caught, so I headed to my quarters for some light reading. A couple days later I went for a walk, and I think I continued my light reading for a couple more nights. I had a couple of work outs, but mostly I was working behind the scences," Kae said hoping not to get chastised for her actions.
"I take it you don't know how to relax either?" Kae said getting a little bold in her questions.
Ian started the ships thrusters to get it out of the dock. He entered the coordinates and set a course at warp five. The ship had kicked to warp five as soon as it was clear of the dock. Once the ship was in motion and not in need of him, he started to work on something on his PADD.
“I take it you don't know how to relax either?” Kaylee said, suddenly meeting with a momentarily...curious glance from Nika, who wondered what had possibly given the doctor that impression.
“Not quite,” Nika replied. She was perfectly capable of relaxing, and she even enjoyed doing so. Of course, the fact remained that she was not a 'social' person by most conventional means. Having grown up in a village-like community, where pretty much everyone knew about everyone, and they also knew someone who knew someone else for most of the surrounding communities, it was a little odd to be on a starship. The number of people on the starship alone, not to mention all the star bases and planets the Victory visited, was a little overwhelming.
Fortunately Nika didn't have to know all of them, but not already knowing them made it much more difficult for her to try to get to know them. But she wouldn't say that at all meant she didn't know how to relax. Oh well. If the impression Kaylee was going to have of Nika was that she was a hard worker who hardly took any time off, well, that wasn't an entirely bad thing.
Nika wasn't sure what to say next, but she glanced at the door, wondering how many people would come to the meeting on time. It was starting to look like it might just be her and Kaylee, in which case Nika wasn't quite sure what she would do. She supposed that she would just start the mission briefing when there were enough people there for it to start.
Tiffani had been on the bridge, but nearly forgot about the meeting when an Ensign spoke up
*Ma'am, shouldn't you be heading for the briefing?* came the voice of Ensign Michaels
Tiffani had been daydreaming when the Ensign spoke to her she didn't hear him at first until she realized he was speaking to her.
she smiled *oooh, yes, thanks Ensign, as you were* she stood up and smiled to a few officers and made her way into the briefing room to find the captain and a few others already present, she nodded *Sorry i'm late, i guess i lost track of time* she slid into her seat and waited for the rest to arrive, letting her mind wonder a bit.
[Second Officer's Log: Supplemental ]
“Cmdr Matthew it felt great to be underway again my shore leave was great but I like being on a ship moving though space then sitting in space dock ’
“ James was looked over the latest Departmental status report on the Victory-C Lt, Wigram had informed him that all Computer Systems up-Grades and Ship repairs on the Victory -C where Finish before the ship got underway ‘
“The CEO of the Victory could not stress enough how important it was for the Victory-C to spend time in dry-docks when ever Breaks in Mission assignment would aloud.
“The years on the Victory-C had not been kind. The ship had been through a war numerous engagements with hostile forces and two killer asteroids to name a few. The ship could use the time and some improvements that had occurred over the years could be administered.
“Also James was looking over the general status of the ship. Crew efficiency had dropped a bit but the XO had ordered some security Drill to be carried out once the ship had left space dock That should Help with the ship combat effectiveness ‘
“However. Certain crew members of the VICTORY would be finishing there tours or transferring to other ships. Also with the Beginning of the Victory current mission the crew were starting to relax a Little Getting back into the day to day Ship operations .
The Most of the Victory Crew had spent some needed R&R on SB-Assailant . So far everything was quite. No major incidents had occurred before the general recall back to the Ship.
“James I was very Happy to hear that .I was sure there would be the occasional brawl. The brawl always happened on a star base. James had been in so many he had lost count.
“It also appeared that one of my OPS officer was about to get married. I had received a request from Lt. Animists if he could take some vacation time to get married. James had authorized it with great pleasure. once this mission was over He wished Robert a great weeding and honeymoon.
”After the meeting I would like to go over some ship operational changes with you and the XO,” Commander Matthew said, entering the conference room shortly after Arika, Tiffani, Wigram, and Roberts.
“Of course,” Nika said, then checked with Tiffani to make sure that would work. To Nika it seemed almost as though Tiffani was a little distracted, but it wasn't anywhere near enough so that Nika would feel a desire to comment on it.
Nika realized that the CScO and CNS still hadn't showed up, but she couldn't really keep the rest of the ship waiting for them. “Good morning,” Nika said, which she supposed made it clear to people that she was going to start the briefing soon, even though it still seemed like a useless extra bit of syllables. Oh well. She was going to have to cope with diplomats soon, Nika may as well get used to the idea that she'd be uncomfortable and out of place.
“The Victory, specifically all her senior staff members, have been invited to a diplomatic conference,” Nika started. “Ostensibly to give us all some greatly-needed diplomatic experience.” Nika smiled slightly, since she knew there was more than a little bit of truth in this for most of the crew. “I have reason to suspect though that we were invited at least in part because the Federation views me as a representative of all Firont. Sorry.” Nika shrugged, the slight movement of the shoulders an attempt to dismiss the Federation's hope, at least in this regard, as she knew they would be largely unsuccessful.
“While we are there the ship will be open to some diplomats who will want to tour a Starfleet vessel. This will mean, Lt. Roberts, you'll have to coordinate with any diplomatic security. Also, if possible, we should all be available for tours at various times. The positive side on that is that whoever will be facilitating a tour won't have to be at the main diplomatic 'gathering' at that time.”
“Any questions?” Nika asked everyone who was here, wondering, and vaguely annoyed, at those who hadn't showed up yet. She hoped they had a legitimate explanation for why they weren't here, rather than a simple problem of oversleeping.
Matti sat at his desk with a very disgruntled look on his face. He had been waiting for hours for someone to come by and see what he was up to.
<The only way this day could get worse is if we get assigned to a diplomatic mission. I hate going on those. Right now I hate this office. Ever since we got back from the last mission nothing has worked right. I still haven't found what is blocking my com badge. The door is not working right and I even tried the manual over ride. The door just won't open. This day sucks. It just couldn't get any worse.> Matti thought to himself as he sat in his chair.
<If I try to use my telepathy, I might be able to reach some one. But I'm still new at this and I don't know if it will work. Of course it will work, are you stupid. I don't know. Try it anyway. If you fail, big deal. It happens to everyone eventually. If it works, I was right and you are stupid.> Matti argued with himself.
<(Hello? Is anyone able to here me? This is LT Kane. If you can here me, please respond.)> Matti thought.
Wigram was sitting and he was so tired, he had had to run from Engineering. He made a head movement apologizing for being late. Those around him smiled with some understanding
He started to think about the mission ahead, after shore leave or rather station leave he felt excellent. he had been getting the ship ready for take off but had spent some time setter-ling in, before vanishing to the star base to meet some old friends. He was surprised as were they as since had last seen them he has gone to the academy.
During the get together he had been treated with a little distance and almost coldness. As if he had moved from the animals to the vegetables. A penalty he had not thought about previously. It would still take quite a while to get used to the change. He saw it as a sideways move not an elevation.
OFF: sorry for short post, just wanted to pitch back in- will post later.
Tiffani had been in the meeting when she suddenly got an odd feeling, as though someone was trying to talk to her telepathlic, but who she wondered, as far as she was aware she was the only Betazoid onboard, and the only one with telepathic abilities, she waited for the right moment, she had a feeling she knew who it was and would check in on it, she waited until the captain was finished talking
*Captain if you'll excuse me, i need to attend to something.* she didn't really wait for an response, she knew the Captain would question her about it later, she stood and made a quick, but quiet exist, as she did she instinctlly found herself heading toward the Counselor's office, she tapped her combadge as she made her way there,
=/\=Cmdr Rylka to Engineering =/\=
=/\=Enginnering here, came an unfamilar voice =/\=
=/\=I believe that Lt Kane is having trouble with his office, please send a repair team=/\=
=/\=Yes ma'am, came the reply =/\=
Tiffani made it to the Counselor's office about the same time as the repair team, she attempted to send him a telepathic response as she got closer, but her abilities were limited so she hoped he could hear her thoughts.
<(if you can hear me, i'm outside your office now with a repair team, will have you out soon, also we need to talk>Tiffani said responding in thought only to Lt Kane.
John sat quitly thinking for a while, listening to other suggestons. "I intend to make around 3 teams of 2, better to be safe than sorry" he informed every one.
John didn't know what it was but, but he had a felling that something was going to happen, and if it was he wanted to be prepared.6
No one seemed to have any questions, and Commander Rylka had rushed off for some reason or another, so Nika decided that it was about time for the meeting to end. She let everyone leave, but made it clear that she was available if anyone still had any questions about the meeting. Before everyone had left Nika turned to Lt. Arika. “If you get a chance there's something I'd like to ask you about,” Nika said to him. “If you have time.” Nika hoped that she had gotten across the the impression that this was not at all urgent or overly important, since she wouldn't want the ship crashing because she wanted to talk to the CNO for a few moments.
After everyone else had left the meeting room for the bridge, Nika turned to Commander Matthew. “I'm sorry, Commander Rylka had something else to do,” Nika said. And hopefully she'll tell me at some point what had her rush off in such a hurry. she thought. “But I can always catch her up later.”
Nika smiled softly, and looked at Commander Matthew. “Ship operational changes, right?” Nika asked, thinking that she remembered that as being what Commander Matthew had said he wanted to talk about.
[Briefing room]
“Cmdr Matthew unfolded his arms and begin to speak "Yes Captain I wonted to talk over some operational changes for the ship with you and the XO but she seem to have a lot on her plate right now ’
“ I wonted to talk about having some more security Drills Added to the Schedule for the ship and as you know we have a personal shortage so I will need to make some Duty shift changes to Alpha And Beta shift some officers will have to Pull double Duty on the Delta sift doing this mission ”
“I noted on our last two mission the ship was more then a little slow when it came to manning there post Doing General Quarter Alerts ’
“I wonted to get your ok before Having Lieutenant Robert Changes the Security drill schedule ‘also as you Know we no longer have a MACO Unit on board they been Transferred off the ship ‘
“I have not heard anything from our security chief on the matter but I think having them gone will make his Life a little bit easier’
“Also Captain we have a bit of a mystery on our hand two Dozen mark IX Torpedoes shipment where beam on board eighteen minutes before we left space dock ‘
“The only reason I know there where Transported on board our Acting chief Armory officer sent me a thank you message telling me they where on board at first thought that there was some kind of mistake so “
“I contacted the base and they said there was no mistake ‘the Request order came from fleet command ‘The Station Senior ops officer said there was no senior officer name on the request just a High level security code ‘
“Captain as the ship chief of Operations I should have been informed before any Transfer where made And Another thing why would we need Mark-IX Torpedoes on a Diplomatic Mission ?
“Captain if you don’t mind me saying there a lot of operational and command Rags that have been broken and rule Number one is no personal or ship supply can be Transported on board a federation star ship without the commanding officer ok That ship operational rule one in the book you have to be High in Rank to break that one ‘
“Well I have a lot to do before we arrive captain ithink i have givin you enough to give you a headach. Matthew smile before heading for the Door
Kae listened to the meeting, and when it was over headed out back to sickbay.
"Hmmm... What to do now? The storage needs some work still, and I could always continue working on personnel records. I could always try to finish that blasted holonovel I started as a cadet, then again maybe I should wait," Kae said to herself in the empty turbolift with a grin on her face. She was sure if a counsellor could see her right then, they would want to schedule an appointment immediately.
~That's the great thing about me, I tend to think out loud.~ She thought as the lift stopped at her deck. She made it back to sickbay and went into her temporary office.
Once seated at her desk, she had the computer play classical music as she started in on the personnel records again hoping to finish the updates before the next meal.
